- 0:22Coop and let's start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody good. Morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Let's talk about the phrase back to the grind.
- 0:34Oh boy that I was reminded of this yesterday when I was
- 0:37looking at pictures of my mother.
- 0:39I was going through baby pictures and stuff, looking for
- 0:42pictures for my daughter and I found this picture of my mother
- 0:47was making this face and she had her jacket on, hood up, bag over
- 0:52her. And I knew that scene so well.
- 0:54And I took that picture. I took thousands of pictures
- 0:58when I was a kid. I was obsessed with it, hence
- 1:00the whole thing of going into graphics and photography and
- 1:03marketing and all of that. But I was, I was and still am
- 1:07obsessed with my camera. And I took this picture of my
- 1:10mother. And in my head I used to always
- 1:12create these little, you know, tag lines, if you will, for the
- 1:16photos, give a little summary of it.
- 1:18And I said that was back to the grind.
- 1:21And sure enough, I flipped the picture over and on it, it was
- 1:25back to the grind. Because that's what she used to
- 1:27say. Every time she had to walk out
- 1:29the door to go to work and or especially on Sunday, she would
- 1:32start that feeling of I've got to go back tomorrow.
- 1:36And the funny part was my mother didn't need to work.
- 1:39My mother chose to work, but my father was very adamant.
- 1:44If you don't want to work, you don't have to work.
- 1:46And she wanted to work. She wanted to contribute, but
- 1:50she had a job that was a very repetitive job.
- 1:53She worked at Texas Instruments, she worked on a production line,
- 1:57and she was specialized in this particular type of welding.
- 2:02And she would go in and she would sit and all day do the
- 2:05same exact thing over and over and over.
- 2:08And I never understood how she could do it, staying stuck in a
- 2:12building because it's the exact opposite of me.
- 2:15And it just used to make me like, what?
- 2:19How can you do that? When I was a kid and she would
- 2:22say that phrase back to the grind and I would say, well,
- 2:26then don't go. And she's like, no, I have to
- 2:28go. And I never understood.
- 2:30And my mother's passed away and I never got to the bottom of why
- 2:34did she feel like she had to do it when she was told she didn't?
- 2:37I never got those discussions with her.
- 2:39And as I hear that phrase grind, I go, I've heard clients say it
- 2:45before, I've read it in books. You know, you've got to grind it
- 2:47out. You've just got to grind it out.
- 2:49And in some cases it's, it's appropriate when you just have
- 2:52to do something like you just got to get it done.
- 2:54Like this time of the year for me, I could use that phrase with
- 2:57sending the garden up. I could say you've just got to
- 2:59grind it out. But I don't feel like it's a
- 3:01grind. See, I, that's the thing.
- 3:03I don't have that association to something thinking I feel a
- 3:06certain way about it, like it's terrible and I've got to grind
- 3:09it out. Maybe I could use that phrase
- 3:11with doing my taxes, but it, it's not something that I am
- 3:17associated to, but it has deep feelings for many people.
- 3:21And my mother was one of them. And it got me thinking about how
- 3:24well, since yesterday when this picture thing came up, I've been
- 3:28thinking about, well, are there areas that I really feel like I
- 3:32have to grind? And the truth is, no, I don't.
- 3:35I, I just don't feel that way. I, I don't feel that way when
- 3:39I'm coaching. I don't feel that way when I'm
- 3:41doing the farm work. I don't feel that way across the
- 3:44board. I guess really the only place I
- 3:45feel that way is about taxes, which is fine.
- 3:48It's like one of those things we all have to do and I'm OK with
- 3:53it because it's not over 80% of my life.
- 3:56But when you start getting to the point where you're feeling
- 3:59like you're, you're, you have to do something and it's a grind.
- 4:02And, you know, we follow the 8020 rule, at least I try to
- 4:05teach all of my clients and my listeners, the 8020 rule is
- 4:10ideal. If you can, if you can do
- 4:12something 80% of the time, then you're going to have good, you
- 4:16know, outstanding results from that.
- 4:18If you can get above that, then you are going into the
- 4:20stratosphere. You're going into acceptance
- 4:229095 a 100% of the time. So when I think about this
- 4:28podcast, right, like I'm way up there with it.
- 4:31I've I've done over, I don't know, 1100 episodes.
- 4:33I've lost track. I'm in my 4th year and I don't
- 4:37miss days. Like I just don't.
- 4:38And I do it all the time because I love it.
- 4:40It doesn't feel like a grind. I don't ever go, damn it, I've
- 4:43got to do that podcast. Nope, it's never like that for
- 4:46me. So when I think about it, it's
- 4:49definitely not a grind. And I'm way up above that, you
- 4:53know, 80%. I'm probably closer to 95100%
- 4:57where it's just like I'm on. It doesn't bother me.
- 5:00I love doing it. I, I, I thrive doing it.
- 5:04And that's what we're looking for, to feel that way.
- 5:07The target is 80 to 2020% of the time.
- 5:11I might be doing things I don't feel like doing or I might not
- 5:14be successful or whatever, but the 8020 rule is kind of what
- 5:17we're looking for. But definitely when you start
- 5:20feeling that word that it's a grind, you have to stop and
- 5:23pause and say, OK, what does this mean to me?
- 5:25Is it a short term thing like the taxes?
- 5:27Great. It's OK if it's not a short term
- 5:30thing and you feel like Grace putting on your jacket and
- 5:33you're back putting your bag on and going back to the grind.
- 5:36And I can still hear a voice doing it tomorrow.
- 5:39Back to the grind. It would make me feel depressed
- 5:42just hearing it. So if you're doing that
- 5:45internally, stop and pause and ask, is this really necessary?
- 5:49What can I do to change it? How can I change it?
- 5:52How can I change my feeling about it?
- 5:53Because if you can't change the situation, you can certainly
- 5:56change the feeling that you associate to it.
- 5:58Because that's the beautiful part and the gift from the
- 6:00universe that we have as human beings.
- 6:02We can change our perception. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:06you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 6:08Bye.
