Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What Does It Look Like to Show Up For Yourself?
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, it's em you're listening to five Minute Friday. Someone
- 0:25Speaker 1: told me yesterday that when they think of my name,
- 0:27Speaker 1: they think of me as Emily, a body like need
- 0:30Speaker 1: the first and the last name. I can be just Emily.
- 0:33Speaker 1: That's cool with me anyway. I digress. Hey, what's up. Hello,
- 0:40Speaker 1: I've had a week. I want to tell you what
- 0:41Speaker 1: I did this week. I booked my trip for the
- 0:43Speaker 1: Berlin Marathon. And I'm gonna be honest, I am scared
- 0:47Speaker 1: as hell to even say that, because right now I
- 0:51Speaker 1: am sitting in front of this microphone speaking to you
- 0:54Speaker 1: while also simultaneously icing my foot, and I have the
- 1:00Speaker 1: confidence from my PT team that I am capable of
- 1:07Speaker 1: doing this, that I will be okay to do this,
- 1:10Speaker 1: But man, does it feel as unsettling as everything to
- 1:16Speaker 1: say to myself, I am going to be able to
- 1:19Speaker 1: run a marathon at the end of September, knowing that
- 1:22Speaker 1: I am regularly going through random, sporadic pain now, and
- 1:28Speaker 1: I say that also recognizing that things now are much
- 1:31Speaker 1: different than they were five months ago. These days, right now,
- 1:36Speaker 1: I am strength training three days a week, running three
- 1:41Speaker 1: days a week, and doing yoga Monday a week, and
- 1:45Speaker 1: some of those are doubled up, so I still have
- 1:47Speaker 1: a rest day on Sundays. And with that said, I
- 1:51Speaker 1: was certainly not running three days a week back in January.
- 1:54Speaker 1: In fact, I was taking the month off of running
- 1:57Speaker 1: in January. So yeah, I just have a lot of feels.
- 2:01Speaker 1: This has been something I've wanted to do for a while,
- 2:03Speaker 1: and I also recognize that London was something I wanted
- 2:07Speaker 1: to do for a really long time, and I put
- 2:10Speaker 1: that off for a year after I had registered for it.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So what will be will be.
- 2:16Speaker 2: But the hotel is booked, the flight is booked, the
- 2:22Speaker 2: after travel is mostly booked, and I Am just going
- 2:27Speaker 2: to do the best I can with what I have.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I feel now like booking all of this and kind
- 2:33Speaker 2: of putting this all in motion. I was really committed
- 2:36Speaker 2: to my recovery before, but this feels like I am
- 2:40Speaker 2: being intentional with where I'm going and my commitment to
- 2:45Speaker 2: where I'm going, and that feels really good. It feels
- 2:47Speaker 2: like I'm doing something for me, despite how scary it is.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I will be the first to say that over the
- 2:54Speaker 2: last few years, I've learned a lot more about valuing
- 2:58Speaker 2: and prioritize zaying things like this prioritizing the things that
- 3:03Speaker 2: I need to do for me so that I can
- 3:05Speaker 2: show up better for myself and then in turn better
- 3:08Speaker 2: for the people that I care about. And so I
- 3:13Speaker 2: tell you all of this to bring you to this
- 3:14Speaker 2: prompt at the end of five Minute Friday. Here, what
- 3:18Speaker 2: is one thing that you can do for yourself today
- 3:21Speaker 2: to prioritize you. And it doesn't have to be something big, right, yes,
- 3:26Speaker 2: signing up for a marathon big to do. And also
- 3:29Speaker 2: I say that, and some people listen to this might
- 3:31Speaker 2: be like, that is my own that sounds like personal torture.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And that's okay. Your self care. Doesn't need to make
- 3:38Speaker 1: my self care. So what is one small action it
- 3:41Speaker 1: can literally be today. I will walk around the block today,
- 3:44Speaker 1: I will speak to myself like I would a loved one. Today,
- 3:48Speaker 1: I will make sure to drink six glasses of water
- 3:51Speaker 1: because I know that I feel good when I'm hydrated,
- 3:53Speaker 1: et cetera, et cetera. So what is one thing that
- 3:57Speaker 1: you're going to do for yourself today that is giving
- 4:00Speaker 1: back to you you prioritizing yourself and feeling good. And
- 4:06Speaker 1: now a listener question.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Hi, Emily, It's Mandy from San Francisco. I've been traveling
- 4:13Speaker 3: a lot more for work lately and keep ending up
- 4:15Speaker 3: in New York a little sick of everything within a
- 4:18Speaker 3: two block radius of my Midtown hotel and would love
- 4:21Speaker 3: some recommendations for where to venture out, where to eat,
- 4:24Speaker 3: where to drink, where to walk, what pasta to get,
- 4:28Speaker 3: and where looking forward to the res.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Lucky for you, Mandy, I have an entire weekly hurdle
- 4:36Speaker 1: on this very topic. My favorite place is to eat
- 4:40Speaker 1: breakfast and brunch, and eat lunch and dinner and have
- 4:43Speaker 1: cocktails and sweat all of the categories. So I'm will
- 4:47Speaker 1: link that in the show notes. But because you said pasta,
- 4:51Speaker 1: if you haven't heard me talk about this a dozen
- 4:53Speaker 1: times already, I'm going to talk about it again right now.
- 4:56Speaker 1: The Bowlinese from Bar pre Me is, in my heart,
- 5:01Speaker 1: one of the best pastas in New York, and I
- 5:04Speaker 1: say that knowing that it's accessible because you can get
- 5:07Speaker 1: a reservation. There are so many unbelievable pastas at restaurants
- 5:11Speaker 1: and spots that are really hard to get into, like
- 5:14Speaker 1: Lilia and Carbone. But with that said, I promise you,
- 5:19Speaker 1: if you plan a little bit in advance, you can
- 5:21Speaker 1: definitely get into our premium, no questions asked. Two other
- 5:26Speaker 1: must tries if you are visiting, I'll mention here. One,
- 5:31Speaker 1: you've got to get a cookie from Levene. I'm a
- 5:34Speaker 1: big fan of the two Chip chocolate chip. And then
- 5:38Speaker 1: if you want to go to a rooftop for drinks,
- 5:43Speaker 1: you cannot go wrong if you stop by the Highlight Room.
- 5:47Speaker 1: It's new at the Moxie in the Lower East Side.
- 5:50Speaker 1: If you get there early, like happy hour, you shouldn't
- 5:53Speaker 1: have a problem getting upstairs. The views are really beautiful,
- 5:56Speaker 1: the drinks are really delicious, and there's always really good
- 6:00Speaker 1: good music. That's it for now again. Check out the
- 6:03Speaker 1: show notes if you want to read about all of
- 6:05Speaker 1: my suggestions for what to eat and where to sweat
- 6:09Speaker 1: in New York. Make sure you're following along with Hurdle
- 6:11Speaker 1: over on Socialist Hurdle podcast. You know me, I'm over
- 6:14Speaker 1: at emileah Badi another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
