- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome back to the Epstein Chronicles.
- 0:04In this episode, we're gonna pick back up with the
- 0:07OIG Report, discussing the circumstances that led to the death
- 0:13of Jeffrey Epstein. In our last episode, we wrapped up
- 0:16chapter four, so now we're diving into chapter five, and
- 0:22just like chapter four, we're going to break it down
- 0:24into several parts, all right, So let's get to it.
- 0:28Chapter five The events of August eighth through the tenth,
- 0:33twenty nineteen, and Epstein's death. Part one. Epstein signs a
- 0:39new last will and testament on August eighth. In the
- 0:43weeks following Epstein's death, multiple media outlets reported that Epstein
- 0:48signed the new last will and testament on August eighth
- 0:51of twenty nineteen. At least one media organization published a
- 0:56copy of the notarized document, showing that it was signed
- 0:59by Epstein and two of his attorneys and notarized on
- 1:02August eight, twenty nineteen. Attorney visitor logs from the Metropolitan
- 1:08Correctional Center in New York, New York confirmed that those
- 1:12attorneys and the notary public visited Epstein on that date.
- 1:17The Office of the Inspector General OIG confirmed via court
- 1:20records that the August eight, twenty nineteen will and other
- 1:24probate related documents were filed in the Superior Court of
- 1:29the Virgin Islands on August fifteenth, twenty nineteen. Among those
- 1:34court filings was an affid David from another attorney who
- 1:38stated that she received the August eighth, twenty nineteen will
- 1:41from Epstein. The OIG confirmed via attorney visitor logs that
- 1:46this attorney also visited Epstein at the mcc New York
- 1:50on August eight of twenty nineteen. The OIG's investigation and
- 1:56review revealed that mcc new York personnel were I don't
- 2:00aware that Epstein had changed his will. Two days before
- 2:03he died. The chief psychologist said she had heard that
- 2:07Epstein had changed his will from the media reporting following
- 2:11his death. The chief psychologist did not know if the
- 2:15media reporting was accurate, but she thought that if it
- 2:18was true, it would have been useful information to know
- 2:21because it would have been a red flag. The staff
- 2:24psychologist and the chief psychologist told the OIG that if
- 2:28Epstein's attorneys had notified them or the psychology department that
- 2:33Epstein had changed his will. Such information would have been
- 2:36a factor warranting a review of Epstein's mental state, and
- 2:40Epstein probably would have been placed back on suicide watch
- 2:45or some type of observation. Part two court order on
- 2:50August ninth, releasing Epstein related documents impending civil litigation. On
- 2:56August ninth, twenty nineteen, the US Court of Appeals for
- 2:59the Second Circuit Court ordered the unsealing of the summary
- 3:03judgment filings from a defamation lawsuit filed by Virginia Roberts,
- 3:08a woman who alleged that Epstein had victimized her when
- 3:11she was a teenager against Gallain Maxwell. As a result
- 3:16of the court's order that same day, approximately two thousand
- 3:19pages of documents were released into the public domain, which
- 3:23contained considerable derogatory information about Epstein, and some may have
- 3:28related to the criminal charges pending against them. Additional high
- 3:33profile public figures were also named in the release documents.
- 3:37There was significant media coverage of information contained within the
- 3:42unsealed court filings. Part three transfer of Epstein's cellmate on
- 3:48August ninth to another institution and failure to replace them
- 3:52with another inmate. Part A notice on August eighth, the
- 3:56impending transfer of Epstein's cellmate on August ninth, as noted above.
- 4:02Since July thirtieth, consistent with the Psychology Department's determination that
- 4:06Epstein needed to have a cell mate, Epstein had been
- 4:09housed with inmate number three, whom the warden and the
- 4:13Federal Bureau of Prisons Executive leadership had selected as an
- 4:17appropriate cell mate. At ten thirty am on August eight,
- 4:21twenty nineteen, the US Marshall Service sent an email to
- 4:25mcc new York personnel assigned to receiving and discharge the
- 4:29area within the Correctional Services Department that is responsible for
- 4:34processing inmates who enter or leave the facility, with the
- 4:38subject transfer of prisoners from NYM MCC new York to GEO.
- 4:44The body of the email identified in May three as
- 4:48one of the prisoners to be transferred, and further stated,
- 4:51please schedule the transfer for Friday eight nine, nineteen. At
- 4:56three thirty six pm. On the same day, the USMA
- 5:00sent a second email to a number of mcc new
- 5:03York personnel, including Associate Warden number two, the Captain, the
- 5:07Shoe Lieutenant, the day Watch Operations Lieutenant, the day Watch
- 5:11Activities Lieutenant, the Evening Watch Operations Lieutenant, another lieutenant, and
- 5:16the Special Investigative Services Lieutenant with the subject Prisoner Production
- 5:21eight nine, twenty nineteen. This email contained to attachments, one
- 5:26of which was the Prisoner Scheduled Report for mcc new
- 5:30York for August ninth, twenty nineteen. The first page of
- 5:34this attachment reflects that inmate number three was scheduled to
- 5:37be transferred from mcc new York to GOO Queen's Detention
- 5:41facility on August ninth, twenty nineteen. This attachment also includes
- 5:46the acronym WAB within the destination description portion of the document,
- 5:52which mcc new York personnel told the OIG means with
- 5:57all belongings. During their OIG interviews, MCC new York staff
- 6:02members further explained that the WAB rotation meant that in
- 6:07May three was being permanently removed from mcc new York
- 6:12on August ninth, twenty nineteen. Notwithstanding this email, as detailed below,
- 6:18several of the email recipients identified above, including the Captain,
- 6:22the day Watch Operations Lieutenant, and the day Watch Activities Lieutenant,
- 6:27told the OIG that they believed in May three had
- 6:30gone to court on August ninth, and they did not
- 6:33know he'd been transferred to another facility part B MCC
- 6:38New York staff rejected Epstein's attorney request that Epstein be
- 6:42housed without a cell mate. Forensic Psychologist One told the
- 6:47OIG that on August ninth, twenty nineteen, she was present
- 6:52during a meeting in which one of Epstein's attorneys opposed
- 6:55Epstein having a cell mate. Forensic Psychologist One explained to
- 6:59the attorney that because Epstein was housed in the Shoe
- 7:03and he was a sex offender, he needed to have
- 7:05a cell mate. Additionally, the OIG investigation revealed that on
- 7:10the day of Epstein's death, a supervisory staff attorney with
- 7:14the BP's Consolidated Legal Center for New York sent an
- 7:18email to the warden to inform him that on the
- 7:21previous day, August ninth, twenty nineteen, two of Epstein's attorneys
- 7:26separately contacted him. One of the attorneys asked for Epstein
- 7:29to be moved to a different specific housing unit within
- 7:33MCC New York. The other attorney asked for Epstein to
- 7:37be housed without a cell mate in the Shoe. The
- 7:40supervisory staff attorney said he informed the first attorney that
- 7:44the suggested housing unit was not available for pre child
- 7:48detainees such as Epstein, and he said he told the
- 7:52second attorney that Epstein could not be housed without a
- 7:55cell mate because of his prior suicide attempt. Removal on
- 8:01August ninth of Epstein's cellmate from MCC New York. According
- 8:07to mcc new York reports, including the Daily Log and
- 8:10the Lieutenants Log, on August nine, twenty nineteen, at approximately
- 8:15eight thirty eight, a m Epstein cellmate in May three
- 8:18was pre removed and transferred out of MCC New York
- 8:22in a routine pre arranged transfer. The Daily Log tracks
- 8:26inmate movements throughout the MCC New York each day, while
- 8:31MCC new York lieutenants utilized the Lieutenant's Log to document
- 8:36the daily activities that took place within the institution during
- 8:40their respective shifts. The Supervisory Correctional System Specialist was the
- 8:46supervisor of Receiving and Discharge on August ninth, twenty nineteen,
- 8:51and was responsible for overseeing all inmate movements in and
- 8:56out of the institution that day. The Supervisory Directional Systems
- 9:01Specialist verified that receiving and Discharge would have used the
- 9:05USMS emails sent on August eighth, twenty nineteen, to coordinate
- 9:10in May three's transfer out of mcc New York, and
- 9:14since in May three was listed as wab on the
- 9:17USMS emails, that meant he was being transferred from the
- 9:21facility and not coming back. She explained to the OIG
- 9:26that if in May three had been going to court,
- 9:29as many pre trial inmates held a mcc New York
- 9:32often did, the daily log would have reflected court rather
- 9:36than pre remove. Since the daily log listed in May
- 9:40three as pre remove, the receiving and discharge personnel who
- 9:44entered the information into the report were made aware that
- 9:47in May three was being transferred from mcc New York
- 9:51honor before the morning of August ninth, twenty nineteen. The
- 9:56supervisory Correctional System specialist told the OIG that the language
- 10:00in the USMS email Wabie with all belongings and the
- 10:05MCC new York reports pre removed made it clear that
- 10:09in May three would not be returning to the Shoe
- 10:12or MCC New York. The OIG also interviewed the Correctional
- 10:18Systems officer who was the receiving and discharge officer who
- 10:22handled inmate movements in and out of MCC New York.
- 10:27On August ninth, twenty nineteen, the Correctional Systems officer confirmed
- 10:32that the daily log reflected that in May three was
- 10:36pre removed on August ninth, twenty nineteen at eight thirty
- 10:39eight a m. Because he was being officially moved from
- 10:43the institution to another prison. She explained to the OIG
- 10:47that the ordinary process was that receiving in discharge personnel
- 10:52would enter the information regarding in May three into century
- 10:56along with information pertaining to other inmates who would be
- 11:00leaving their MCC New York housing units. Receiving in discharge
- 11:05use this information to create the daily call out list,
- 11:09which had all the inmates names and times that they
- 11:12were being moved. The Correctional Systems officer told the OIG
- 11:16that the call out list from August ninth, twenty nineteen
- 11:20was no longer available because the call out lists were
- 11:23printed and hand delivered to the housing units each day
- 11:26and then discarded by the units at the end of
- 11:29the day. She also said each day's call out list
- 11:33was only maintained electronically for a twenty four hour period,
- 11:37and then it was updated overwritten with the next day's list.
- 11:41In our OIG interview, the correctional Systems officer explained what
- 11:45would have occurred on this date based on her experience.
- 11:49Receiving and discharge personnel would have printed copies of the
- 11:53call out list for August ninth, twenty nineteen, which mcc
- 11:57New York Internal Officer would distribute to the various housing
- 12:02units within the facility. Based on the other records reflecting
- 12:06in May Three's transfer, the correctional Systems officer said the
- 12:10call out list created for August ninth, twenty nineteen would
- 12:14have listed wab next to in May Three's name, which
- 12:18meant that he was departing from the institution and not returning.
- 12:22Correctional Officer Number one told the OIG that on the
- 12:26morning of August ninth, twenty nineteen, he and daywatch Shoe
- 12:30Officer in charge escorted in May three to receiving and
- 12:35discharge and Epstein to his legal visit. All right, folks,
- 12:38we're going to wrap up there, and then in the
- 12:40next episode, we're gonna pick up with part D of
- 12:45Chapter five. All of the information that goes with the
- 12:48episode can be found in the description box.
