- 3:51Speaker 3: Today.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I am sitting back down with my friend Ali Radi.
- 3:55Speaker 2: He's the CEO and founder at Tonal.
- 3:57Speaker 3: How you doing, Ali, I'm doing great.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Thanks for having me.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I'm so happy to be back with you.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Talk to me about what the latest and greatest is
- 4:06Speaker 2: going on with you.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Well, we just had our second child literally four days ago.
- 4:11Speaker 1: That's certainly been occupying a lot of my attention and
- 4:15Speaker 1: at total. We just made it through the front half
- 4:18Speaker 1: of the holiday season and it was a really good
- 4:20Speaker 1: one and a really busy one. So just keeping keeping
- 4:22Speaker 1: our hands.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Full a good one and a busy one is exactly
- 4:26Speaker 2: what we want to hear. Well, congratulations on the new
- 4:29Speaker 2: addition to your family. That's so so exciting and I mean,
- 4:33Speaker 2: what a beautiful time of year to have this kind
- 4:37Speaker 2: of thing to celebrate.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Yeah, no, thank you. We're really excited. Two boys now,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and so we definitely have our hands full.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Your wife is out numbered.
- 4:48Speaker 1: She is, I tell her she ended up with three
- 4:50Speaker 1: of me.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Well, again, a great time for reflection. Super stoked to
- 4:58Speaker 2: have you here as a part of this Learning the
- 5:00Speaker 2: Page series.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I'm about to ask.
- 5:02Speaker 2: You what your one word that you would use to
- 5:07Speaker 2: do so would be, what is it?
- 5:09Speaker 1: It took me all of half a second to come
- 5:11Speaker 1: up with the word strength, because that is what Tonal
- 5:14Speaker 1: is about. And when we talk about strength, we don't
- 5:17Speaker 1: just talk about physical strength. We talk about strength and
- 5:19Speaker 1: all its forms. And I will tell you twenty twenty
- 5:22Speaker 1: one was definitely a year that took strength in all
- 5:25Speaker 1: its forms. There was no amount of physical strength that
- 5:29Speaker 1: could get anyone through the year. There was a lot
- 5:32Speaker 1: of call it emotional strength, mental strength. And as I've
- 5:36Speaker 1: gotten acquainted with professional athletes over the course of the
- 5:40Speaker 1: last five or six years of Tonal, the things that
- 5:43Speaker 1: I've heard from them consistently is though They'll always say
- 5:46Speaker 1: to me, like Ali, I wasn't the strongest, or I
- 5:48Speaker 1: wasn't the fastest, or I wasn't the best at X
- 5:50Speaker 1: or y or z. But the thing I always had
- 5:52Speaker 1: was the mental strength. And no matter how hard the
- 5:55Speaker 1: game got, my focus only got better. And so twenty
- 6:00Speaker 1: one was. It was a hard year for everyone and
- 6:02Speaker 1: a year of strength. Wow.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Great word and obviously very applicable. Not so surprising coming
- 6:09Speaker 2: from you, especially where you sit talk to me a
- 6:12Speaker 2: little bit about some of the moments that you would
- 6:16Speaker 2: say demanded the most strength from you.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Well, uh, I think there were a couple a couple
- 6:24Speaker 1: of things that come to mind. The first one is,
- 6:26Speaker 1: I think a lot of people draw their strength from
- 6:29Speaker 1: a call of the light at the end of the tunnel. Uh.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And this was certainly a year where the light kept
- 6:34Speaker 1: moving further and further away. We kept thinking your life
- 6:38Speaker 1: was going to return back to normal. You and I
- 6:40Speaker 1: sat down together, and you know, and we thought things
- 6:43Speaker 1: were going to begin returning to normal, and and in fact,
- 6:47Speaker 1: the opposite kept happening. And and now we you know,
- 6:49Speaker 1: we just accepted the fact that we don't really know
- 6:51Speaker 1: when when things turned. So having the strength to kind
- 6:54Speaker 1: of face that that reality was one. And then the
- 6:57Speaker 1: second one was, you know, we're running. You know, our
- 7:01Speaker 1: tagline is be your Strongest. And what we provide is
- 7:04Speaker 1: is digital strength training equipment with personal training built in,
- 7:07Speaker 1: so you have an entire gym and a personal trainer
- 7:10Speaker 1: in your home. And for a lot of people, that's
- 7:12Speaker 1: exactly what they need at this time. And our business
- 7:15Speaker 1: is growing really, really rapidly, and to be growing a
- 7:18Speaker 1: business rapidly and scaling, supply chain and logistics, while the
- 7:22Speaker 1: world around us is literally falling apart. Factories are shutting down,
- 7:26Speaker 1: workers are unable to show up to work, ports are congested,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and so you know, it takes a lot of strength
- 7:32Speaker 1: to wake up every single day and just like work
- 7:34Speaker 1: through every little challenge that comes your way, just so
- 7:36Speaker 1: you can keep this entire ship moving and in fact accelerating.
- 7:40Speaker 1: And that was hard. That was hard this year for sure.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, And I think that that certainly, whether you
- 7:47Speaker 2: are you know, at the helm of a company like
- 7:50Speaker 2: you are, or someone just going through the motions in
- 7:53Speaker 2: there every day, there are certainly moments and times where
- 7:58Speaker 2: it's hard to channel that strength. So for you, when
- 8:03Speaker 2: these hurdle moments really just felt so grand, where do
- 8:07Speaker 2: you dig for for that? What do you look to
- 8:10Speaker 2: as a source of strength or perhaps reflect on as
- 8:14Speaker 2: a reminder that you are capable of these hard things.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Well, the first first thing is actually just going back
- 8:21Speaker 1: to physical strength and exercise. There's something about taking a
- 8:26Speaker 1: moment to step away from the world to focus on
- 8:30Speaker 1: a workout, and especially with strength training, you feel strong
- 8:34Speaker 1: and you're building that strength, that physical strength, and that
- 8:37Speaker 1: translates into mental strength as well. And then the second
- 8:41Speaker 1: one is really just the team. We have built an
- 8:44Speaker 1: incredible team at Tonal and we literally all love each
- 8:47Speaker 1: other and when things get really, really hard, we turn
- 8:51Speaker 1: to one another for support. We turn to one another
- 8:54Speaker 1: and we hold hands and we dive in and that
- 8:57Speaker 1: makes a massive, massive difference. And that's actually one of
- 9:01Speaker 1: our big One of my big reflections for the year,
- 9:04Speaker 1: which maybe a question you're going to ask me, one
- 9:08Speaker 1: of my big reflections for the year is just the
- 9:09Speaker 1: importance of being physically together. I think in many ways,
- 9:15Speaker 1: we have learned to cope with being remote. We have
- 9:18Speaker 1: learned to be remote and live in the virtual world
- 9:22Speaker 1: of Zoom, and to some degree we've even convinced ourselves
- 9:26Speaker 1: that that's okay and that everything is just fine. But
- 9:29Speaker 1: the truth is it's not. And the reason we know
- 9:32Speaker 1: that is when we have been able to get together
- 9:34Speaker 1: in person, even for an hour, even for two hours.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Just the magic that you can have when people have
- 9:40Speaker 1: been who've been staring at each other through little tiles
- 9:43Speaker 1: on the screen for months get together physically. It just
- 9:46Speaker 1: completely changes everything. And it's something that I never want
- 9:49Speaker 1: to want to take for granted and something that our
- 9:52Speaker 1: team is really really doubling.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Down on and I feel like some listening to this
- 9:56Speaker 3: right now.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I mean we were talking about the light of the
- 9:58Speaker 2: tunnel getting further in for they're back hearing this and
- 10:01Speaker 2: being like, oh, I feel the same way, but also
- 10:03Speaker 2: feeling like very overwhelmed and frustrated about the current situation.
- 10:07Speaker 2: So in this moment, it's almost as if we have
- 10:11Speaker 2: to take the opportunity to ask ourselves how that might
- 10:15Speaker 2: look different going forward, at least for this immediate time period,
- 10:20Speaker 2: and then after asking ourselves that question, not judging or
- 10:23Speaker 2: being so angry anymore about the fact that it is
- 10:27Speaker 2: going to look different for this period of time, mostly
- 10:30Speaker 2: because that anger it doesn't get us anywhere, right.
- 10:33Speaker 1: No, I mean, anger never moves you forward. In fact,
- 10:36Speaker 1: it holds you back. And if you can let it
- 10:38Speaker 1: go and you know, accept the reality, then you have
- 10:42Speaker 1: the ability to actually craft the new future. And what
- 10:44Speaker 1: we have learned about being together is that, you know,
- 10:48Speaker 1: we used to take our time together for granted, how
- 10:50Speaker 1: many times has has someone gone to the office, sat
- 10:52Speaker 1: at their desks for eight hours, not talk to anyone,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and then left, And now we know that that time
- 10:58Speaker 1: together is so precious that we plan every moment of it.
- 11:00Speaker 1: It's like it's we get together with purpose, and that's really,
- 11:04Speaker 1: I think the new future that we're going to have
- 11:07Speaker 1: to live in.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I feel like you've read this book, but I'm going
- 11:10Speaker 2: to ask you if you've read it. Have you read
- 11:12Speaker 2: The Artic Gathering?
- 11:13Speaker 1: Actually I have not. That sounds like something i'd love
- 11:15Speaker 1: to read.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Now. I feel like I don't even know how to
- 11:19Speaker 3: feel right now.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I feel like me recommending a book to you is
- 11:21Speaker 2: like a massive, massive win that you haven't found yet.
- 11:24Speaker 3: It's by Pria Parker, and what I loved.
- 11:26Speaker 2: About it most was not just of course, highlighting the
- 11:30Speaker 2: benefits of community and understanding how it can look different
- 11:33Speaker 2: in different circumstances, But one of my favorite things is
- 11:37Speaker 2: how she talks about being conscious of how you leave
- 11:41Speaker 2: a situation and how people.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Feel when they leave being in your.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Presence or gathering that you're involved in, because I think
- 11:49Speaker 2: so so often that like final moments, those final moments
- 11:53Speaker 2: can be an afterthought. But if you actually really think
- 11:56Speaker 2: and get really intentional with those final moments, it can
- 12:01Speaker 2: make all of the difference in the entire perception of
- 12:04Speaker 2: the gathering that you're throwing, whether it's in person or
- 12:07Speaker 2: remote or wherever you have to do.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Oh, it sounds like a book. I'm going to order
- 12:11Speaker 1: a minute after we hang out the call today.
- 12:13Speaker 2: No, I have to send you a book you sent
- 12:15Speaker 2: me to Okay, fair deal, deal, it's coming your way. Okay,
- 12:22Speaker 2: Well you you already you already know where this is
- 12:24Speaker 2: going because you started to get into it talking to
- 12:27Speaker 2: me about some other reflections. When of your year, when
- 12:30Speaker 2: you think about some of the biggest lessons you learned,
- 12:33Speaker 2: aside from as we're talking about here, the value of
- 12:36Speaker 2: in person interaction, what else do you got for me?
- 12:38Speaker 1: Agility? That was the other one that really came to mind.
- 12:41Speaker 1: And twenty twenty one was a year of uncertainty. Every
- 12:47Speaker 1: single day we woke up in every moment in time,
- 12:51Speaker 1: there were literally countless things that either could go wrong
- 12:54Speaker 1: or did go wrong, and you never could plan for
- 12:57Speaker 1: every one of them. You never could predict every one
- 12:59Speaker 1: of you ever could risk mitigate every single one of them.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And so in some ways you had to just roll
- 13:05Speaker 1: with the punches and you know, deal with those challenges
- 13:07Speaker 1: day by day. And and those books you were referring to,
- 13:11Speaker 1: those were two books by Jim Collins, and one of
- 13:13Speaker 1: the principles in his books is you've got to be
- 13:16Speaker 1: very clear about the things that are in your control
- 13:18Speaker 1: and the things that are out of your control, and
- 13:20Speaker 1: start by accepting that, start by accepting what's in your
- 13:22Speaker 1: control and out of your control, and then build your
- 13:24Speaker 1: plans accordingly. And we did a lot of that this
- 13:27Speaker 1: past year, and that was that was really really you know,
- 13:30Speaker 1: that was a really really powerful way for us to really,
- 13:34Speaker 1: you know, to really attack all of the daily challenges
- 13:37Speaker 1: that we are facing.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Can you talk to.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Me or give me a specific example of how you
- 13:42Speaker 2: maybe had to implement that well.
- 13:46Speaker 1: I mean, supply chain is really where where we felt
- 13:50Speaker 1: a lot of the pain. As you may have heard,
- 13:53Speaker 1: there's a global semiconductor shortage, and it doesn't just it
- 13:56Speaker 1: doesn't really just impact us. It also impacts a lot
- 13:59Speaker 1: of our suppliers. And so we may be buying someone
- 14:02Speaker 1: something from a supplier which goes into a tonal and
- 14:05Speaker 1: they call us up and say, hey, you know, you
- 14:07Speaker 1: know those tens of thousands of units that we're supposed
- 14:09Speaker 1: to ship out today, Yeah, they're not going to ship uh,
- 14:12Speaker 1: And then we have to start working through that and
- 14:14Speaker 1: at times we have gone one, two, three levels up
- 14:17Speaker 1: into the supply chain and help them get the parts
- 14:20Speaker 1: that they need in order to make the parts that
- 14:22Speaker 1: we need. And so in some ways, you know, taking
- 14:25Speaker 1: ownership over you know, what are what are we good at,
- 14:28Speaker 1: Like we are good at getting our hands on semiconductors,
- 14:31Speaker 1: even better than some of our suppliers, and so you know,
- 14:34Speaker 1: taking stock of that strength. You know, in terms of logistics,
- 14:39Speaker 1: you know, we have diversified the way that we do
- 14:42Speaker 1: logistics so that if you know, you're kind of like
- 14:45Speaker 1: spreading your risk, well, if these people don't can't pull
- 14:48Speaker 1: it off, then you have these other people who might
- 14:49Speaker 1: be able to pull it off. And then even even
- 14:53Speaker 1: when it comes to just the way we've been we've
- 14:55Speaker 1: been building our team. We we took the opportunity during
- 14:59Speaker 1: during the penandemic to move out of just San Francisco,
- 15:02Speaker 1: but we are very intentional about the cities that we
- 15:05Speaker 1: put our talent and hired people. Been having people in
- 15:09Speaker 1: different cities and actually in fact a few different countries
- 15:12Speaker 1: has really helped us weather a lot of the storms
- 15:14Speaker 1: because you know, you just you're not being hit with
- 15:16Speaker 1: the same thing everywhere at the exact.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Same time, right right. You know, it's interesting.
- 15:21Speaker 2: This kind of makes me think about a piece of
- 15:24Speaker 2: advice that I was given once, and I know that
- 15:26Speaker 2: I've mentioned it here on the show before, but my
- 15:29Speaker 2: cousin once told me that when you go into a
- 15:31Speaker 2: difficult conversations, perhaps know what it is that you're trying
- 15:37Speaker 2: to get out of it, and kind of back into
- 15:39Speaker 2: it that way, thinking about what might be the best
- 15:42Speaker 2: way to approach this person or this topic.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Knowing that my ultimate goal is X.
- 15:47Speaker 2: So for you guys at Tonal, knowing that your ultimate
- 15:51Speaker 2: goal is to obviously proceed with your business, having to
- 15:55Speaker 2: be malleable in your methods may not have been something
- 15:59Speaker 2: that was comfortable, but it was something that helped you
- 16:03Speaker 2: get to where you want to be.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Yeah. In fact, it's actually extremely uncomfortable because everything that
- 16:12Speaker 1: you're told about operations and the way to run a
- 16:15Speaker 1: business and scalable matter basically says that malleability is counter
- 16:20Speaker 1: to efficiency and you need to be more efficient. And
- 16:22Speaker 1: in some ways figuring out how to be malleable and
- 16:25Speaker 1: still gain efficiency along the way that was hard work.
- 16:28Speaker 2: I think that a lot of people had a better
- 16:29Speaker 2: work personal life. It's so weird to say this, but
- 16:33Speaker 2: it's not that I don't think that you should have
- 16:35Speaker 2: a balance between your work and your personal life, but
- 16:38Speaker 2: I do feel like this added layer of vulnerability can
- 16:42Speaker 2: at times make the working relationship a little bit better.
- 16:45Speaker 2: It's like when years ago you used to call it
- 16:49Speaker 2: sweat working came into play, right, and like sweat working
- 16:52Speaker 2: or working out with people in this way where we're
- 16:54Speaker 2: all being active. It took down that extra layer of
- 16:57Speaker 2: perhaps you know, that hard shell and allowed people to
- 17:01Speaker 2: communicate and get to know each other in a more
- 17:04Speaker 2: authentic and again that word vulnerable, vulnerable way, So for
- 17:07Speaker 2: us to see in your living room or have to
- 17:10Speaker 2: or have the opportunity to like see that baby, or
- 17:12Speaker 2: for me right now, like I have my right hand
- 17:14Speaker 2: on this dog that I'm dog sitting, like have the
- 17:16Speaker 2: dog in the corner, like all of these things. It's
- 17:19Speaker 2: just a reminder like these are real people that we're
- 17:21Speaker 2: doing real work with every single day.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Yeah, And the pretense of corporate America, where you know,
- 17:27Speaker 1: you get up in the morning and put on you know,
- 17:29Speaker 1: your tie and go to work and for eight hours
- 17:32Speaker 1: to pretend like your family doesn't exist no longer true.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Definitely, definitely not definitely not okay right now? When you
- 17:40Speaker 2: think of the next three sixty five, what excites you Ali.
- 17:45Speaker 1: What excites me moving forward? It's just we're you know,
- 17:48Speaker 1: the number of people we're going to be able to
- 17:50Speaker 1: impact me. Our singular goal is to help people be
- 17:53Speaker 1: their strongest any any which way we can. And for me,
- 17:57Speaker 1: you know, that's about building a strong team at Tonal
- 17:59Speaker 1: and having them go out and make Tonals and get
- 18:03Speaker 1: them into people's hands and create great content and change
- 18:06Speaker 1: people's lives. And it's happening, and it's happening faster and faster,
- 18:10Speaker 1: and a year is going to go buy like a flash,
- 18:13Speaker 1: and we're going to look back at it and say, Wow,
- 18:15Speaker 1: Holy cal how did you do that?
- 18:16Speaker 2: Can you give us any spoiler alerts about things that
- 18:19Speaker 2: we may be excited for when it comes to Tonal
- 18:21Speaker 2: in twenty twenty two.
- 18:23Speaker 1: A lot more content, more coaches, more content, more live
- 18:26Speaker 1: just a lot.
- 18:27Speaker 2: More of all of that beautiful, beautiful, And then our
- 18:31Speaker 2: final question right now, you have an opportunity to offer
- 18:34Speaker 2: yourself a piece of advice looking back at the very
- 18:38Speaker 2: beginning of twenty twenty one, knowing what you know now
- 18:42Speaker 2: going in to the beginning of twenty twenty two, what
- 18:45Speaker 2: do you tell yourself?
- 18:48Speaker 1: Change everything? Be willing to change anything and everything. And
- 18:54Speaker 1: it wasn't until far too it into the year that
- 18:57Speaker 1: it dawned on me. But disruption in the technology sector,
- 19:01Speaker 1: we talk about disruptive technologies. When the world is changing,
- 19:06Speaker 1: that is everyone's opportunity to rewrite their future. You know,
- 19:09Speaker 1: things don't always change in predictable ways when a disruption occurs.
- 19:13Speaker 1: It's not like the outcome is written by the disruption.
- 19:16Speaker 1: The disruption is just an opportunity for people to shape
- 19:18Speaker 1: the next phase. And there is the largest disruption going
- 19:23Speaker 1: on in the history of like in our lives right now.
- 19:26Speaker 1: It's global and it is a moment where everyone, I
- 19:30Speaker 1: think is beginning to rewrite their future. We are deciding,
- 19:35Speaker 1: you know, which offices we want to have, what talent in.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Employees are deciding where they actually want to live. Employees
- 19:42Speaker 1: are deciding to start families. Friends are deciding to start families,
- 19:46Speaker 1: People are switching careers. Like this is, you know, when
- 19:50Speaker 1: there's so much change and uncertainty going on in the world,
- 19:54Speaker 1: it's really everyone's opportunity to change anything and everything that
- 19:57Speaker 1: they want to change about their lives because you know what,
- 19:59Speaker 1: everything things changing anyways, I really wish I had figured
- 20:02Speaker 1: that out in January and not August.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Be open to change.
- 20:09Speaker 2: I love that. I love that piece of advice. Well,
- 20:10Speaker 2: thank you so much again for your time today. How
- 20:13Speaker 2: do the hurdlers keep up with you? How do they
- 20:15Speaker 2: follow along with you? How do they keep up with Tonal?
- 20:17Speaker 2: Give me all the details.
- 20:19Speaker 1: So Instagram at tonaltonal dot com is our website. Sign

- 20:29Speaker 1: and I'm personally at arad on both Instagram and Twitter.
- 20:32Speaker 1: I am not yet all that active on social media,
- 20:34Speaker 1: but will be when I have a little bit more time.

- 20:40Speaker 2: tied up at the moment. Congrats again on the new
