Transcript
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Andrew Garfield's AI movie has Hollywood nervous.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, it's Kilbert K here.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to my channel.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Hollywood has spent decades warning us about artificial intelligence.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: We had computers turning against humans, robots taking over the world, machines deciding that people are the problem.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And now Hollywood has made a movie about the actual people building AI.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: And suddenly the story behind the movie is almost as dramatic as the movie itself.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Gilbert K Take.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Today we're talking about Artificial, the new film starring Andrew Garfield as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And let me tell you, Peter Parker has officially left the friendly neighborhood.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: He's now entering the dangerous neighborhood of artificial intelligence, billionaires, and boardroom drama.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: What could possibly go wrong?
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: What is Artificial about?
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Artificial is directed by Luca Guananino, the filmmaker behind Call Me by Your Name, Challengers, and After the Hunt.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: The film takes us inside OpenAI, the company behind Chad GBT.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: But this is not a documentary explaining how artificial intelligence works.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Thank goodness, because nobody wants to spend two hours watching people explain computer code while dramatic music plays in the background.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Instead, the movie focused on five wild days in November 2023.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Sam Altman was suddenly fired as the CEO of OpenAI.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: The board said he had not been consistently candid with them.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Employees threatened to leave.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Investors became nervous.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Microsoft entered the picture, and just days later, Altman returned to his job.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Some people cannot get their old job back after five years.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Sam Altman did it in five days.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: This is not a career comeback.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: This is a corporate boomerang.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: The movie turns that real power struggle into what appears to be a dark, funny, and uncomfortable drama about the people controlling a technology that could change all our lives.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Andrew Garfield plays Altman, Jura Bodhisattv plays OpenAI, co-founder Ayla Satzkiver, Monica Barbaro plays Mira Murati, and Cooper Hoffman plays Greg Brockman.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Then we have Ike Baronholtz playing Elon Musk.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Yes, you heard that correctly.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: At this point, the movie does not need a marketing campaign.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Just release one image of Iike as Elon Musk and let the internet do the rest.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Mark Rylance also appears as Jeffrey Hinton, the computer scientist often called one of the godfathers of AI.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: The supporting cast includes Jason Schwartzmann, Chris Odoud, and Billy Lourdes.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: My reaction to the trailer.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: The first thing I noticed is that the trailer does not present the story like an inspiring journey about a group of brilliant people changing the world.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: This is not look at these wonderful innovators making the future better.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: The trailer feels more like these people may be building the future.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: And we should probably ask what kind of future they are building.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Everything feels cold, controlled, and slightly threatening.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Andrew Garfield does not play Sam Altman as a loud over-the-top villain.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: That would be too easy.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: He appears calm, very calm.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And sometimes the calmest person in the room is the one making everybody else nervous.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: The trailer also shows what appears to be a fictional version of Altman's emergency preparations, including weapons and supplies.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: The real Altman previously discussed keeping survivors supplies and having land available in case of a major disaster, although the movie is clearly dramatizing its version of events.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: That image tells us what kind of movie this may be.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: The people selling us the future may also be preparing for the future to go terribly wrong.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: That is dark and it's also little funny.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Imagine inventing something that you say will improve the world while quietly, keeping an emergency bag by the door.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Nothing says confidence in your own product like preparing for the end of civilization.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Andrew Garfield is a smart choice.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Casting Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman is interesting because Garfield naturally brings warmth and vulnerability to these characters.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Even when he plays someone ambitious or difficult, we usually want to understand him.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: That creates a fascinating question.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Will the film make Sam Altman sympathetic?
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Would it present him as a visionary who believes he's helping humanity?
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Would it show him as a powerful businessman who lost control of his own company?
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Or will it portray him as someone moving too quickly with technology that even its creators may not fully understand?
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Garfield has said that he has never met Altman and based his performance on the script, interviews, and research.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: He also spoke about the enormous responsibility carried by someone leading technology with the power to affect humanity.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: This could be where the movie becomes truly interesting.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: The best films about powerful people do not simply tell us that someone is good or bad.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: They show us how that person thinks and then allow us to decide whether we should admire them, fear them, or do a little of both.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: The bigger drama behind the movie.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Here's where the story gets even more interesting.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Amazon MGM Studios were originally involved with Artificial.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Then Amazon developed a massive business partnership with OpenAI.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Not long afterward, Amazon MGM decided it would no longer release the movie.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Amazon didn't publicly say that its OpenAI relationship caused the decision.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Its official position was that Artificial would be better served by another studio.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: So to be clear, we cannot say the partnership was the confirmed reason.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: But we're allowed to notice the timing, and that timing is more awkward than sitting beside your ex at a wedding.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Neon eventually acquired the film and plans to release it in select theaters on Christmas Day before expanding it in January.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: It's also expected to premiere at the New York Film Festival.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: This gives us the real question: Can Hollywood tell the truth about artificial intelligence when major studios are also investing in it?
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Hollywood is publicly debating AI while also exploring how it can be used to write, design, market, and produce entertainment.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Actors are worried about their faces and voices being copied.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Writers are worried about their work being used to train machines.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Visual artists are worried about their styles being recreated without permission.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Studios see a tool that could reduce costs.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Creators see a tool that could reduce careers.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Both sides are looking at the same technology, but they are seeing completely different futures.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Is this movie arriving too soon?
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: There's another problem.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: The events in this movie happened only a few years ago, and the AI story is still unfolding.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: We do not know this chapter.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: We do not know how this chapter ends.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: We do not know if we're still in chapter one.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: That means Artificial is not really looking back at history.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: He's trying to dramatize history while we're still living through it.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: That can make the movie feel urgent, but it can also make it risky.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: How much is fact?
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: How much is Hollywood drama?
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Are we watching?
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: An accurate version of the Open AI crisis or a clever story built around people who are still shaping their own public images.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: The movie needs to make those lines clear because when filmmakers dramatize real people and recent events, audiences may remember the movie more clearly than the truth.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: My Gilbert K.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: take.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: My take is that artificial could become one of the most talked-about films of the year.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: But not because it will explain artificial intelligence.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: It may succeed because it explores something much easier to understand.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Power.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Who controls the technology?
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: And who controls the person running the company?
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Who gets to decide how quickly AI moves?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: And what happens when a small group of people makes decisions that could affect billions of us?
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: That is what makes this movie the new movie about Sam Alfman.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: It's a movie about trusts who are constantly being told that the AI will save us time, improve our lives, and solve enormous problems.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: At the same time, we're also being warned that it could remove jobs, spread false information, and become difficult to control.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: It's like being offered a self-driving car by someone who quietly whispers, the brakes are still learning.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: You get inside, I'm also curious to see whether artificial challenges the people in power or simply turns them into fascinating celebrities.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: There's danger that Hollywood could take a serious debate and package it as another exciting battle between brilliant billionaires.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: We already know Andrew Garfield can make a complicated character compelling.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: The real test is whether the movie gives us something meaningful to think about, or simply gives us two hours of powerful men arguing in beautiful rooms.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Final verdict.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Based on this trailer, I'm interested.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: The cast is excellent.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Luca Guaranino is not a predictable filmmaker, and the subject could not be more relevant.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: But I'm not ready to trust the film completely.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: A movie about AI should not tell us what to think, it should make us question the people asking for our trust, including the filmmakers themselves.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Maybe artificial will be a warning, maybe it will be a dark comedy, maybe it will be the social network for the Chat GPT generation.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Or maybe the smartest thing about the movie will be its title.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Because in this story, we may have trouble deciding what's real, what's manufactured, and who's controlling the final version.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Now I want to hear from you.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Do you think artificial will expose the dangers behind AI?
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: Or will Hollywood turn Sam Altman and Elon Musk into another form of entertainment?
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: And the bigger question do you trust the people building artificial intelligence?
