- 0:00If you had to come face to face with evil,
- 0:04what would you do? What would you need? What would you
- 0:08say? We're back in my college days. There was a movie, some vampire
- 0:12movie, and the, the young hero meets
- 0:16the vampire with his red eyes and the pointy ears and the
- 0:20big teeth, and the boy whips out a crucifix, and to the boy's
- 0:24horror The vampire just laughed and he says, silly boy,
- 0:29that only works if you believe. Apparently no one had
- 0:33told the boy that. I think that was need-to-know, mission-critical information.
- 0:37Now, even back then, it didn't surprise me.
- 0:40Well, of course you have to believe or
- 0:45the fight against evil doesn't work. And it shouldn't surprise us
- 0:49when the worldly get that wrong.
- 0:53But what if people who call themselves Christians
- 0:57get that wrong? What then? Stay with me, I got a story to tell.
- 1:01Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTeague, your host here every day of The Catholic Current,
- 1:05coming to you from the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's take a
- 1:09closer look. Glad you're here.
- 1:12Wouldn't surprise you if a dark, brooding, melancholic Irishman like me
- 1:15told you that I've been thinking about evil lately. Well, actually,
- 1:19I think about evil a lot. I think about it nearly all the time.
- 1:21I've taught courses in philosophy and theology about
- 1:25the problem of evil. It's called Theodicy. And read
- 1:30a lot of words. I've also met evil face to face many times.
- 1:34And it seems to me there are some mistakes that
- 1:38are made in confronting evil. Recently, I read an essay that
- 1:42had to do with all the movies that came
- 1:45from Bram Stoker's classic novel Dracula.
- 1:49And this guy had a really good insight. He said, you know,
- 1:52the movies can't do justice to Bram Stoker's intention because
- 1:57it focuses on the person of Dracula, either as
- 2:00a complete monster in the 1920s movie Nosferatu,
- 2:04or as kind of a romantic figure with Bela
- 2:08Lugosi starting in the 1930s and all the way up to today,
- 2:11where it's cool to have a boyfriend who is
- 2:16the vampire. We saw that in the unspeakable Twilight series.
- 2:20All right, and he says, here's what's wrong. Here's what
- 2:24Bram Stoker missed. Here's what the people who drew from Bram
- 2:28Stoker missed. Bram Stoker said all these different
- 2:32people who were confronting the evil that Dracula represented— the
- 2:36young women, the doctors, the young men who love the
- 2:40young women and try to protect them, the psychiatrist, the scientist, Van Helsing,
- 2:45they all had a limited frame of reference that
- 2:50didn't budget for, if you will,
- 2:53intractable evil. And in the
- 2:58records of the letters and the journals, etc., you realize every
- 3:02person from those different categories of Victorian life in the novel all
- 3:06failed because they
- 3:10weren't prepared really to deal with
- 3:14intractable evil. And that
- 3:17made me think back to another movie I saw in college, and I used to
- 3:21show it to students from time to time. It's from, uh, 1990,
- 3:25uh, stars Jeff Goldblum, and it's called Mr. Frost.
- 3:28I'm not going to give any spoilers, but you need to see this movie if
- 3:31you can find it. In brief, Jeff Goldblum plays a crazy
- 3:35person. There's a big surprise. And he plays a man named
- 3:39Mr. Frost who is arrested for having confessed
- 3:44to murdering 24 people. He ends up in a very
- 3:47special hospital for the criminally insane, and all the staff,
- 3:51they're going to get through to him. They're going to break him.
- 3:55They're going to cure him because they're scientists.
- 4:01And not only do they practice the science,
- 4:05they practice the social science. They know
- 4:10about feelings. So they are ready to deal with
- 4:14evil. So Jeff Goldblum sits down, uh, the psychiatrist and says,
- 4:18look, here's the situation. I'm the devil,
- 4:22he says. And Uh,
- 4:25there was a time when people acknowledged God, they acknowledged the devil,
- 4:29they knew they had a soul. And he said, and they would bargain, uh,
- 4:32for their soul, you know, love or wealth or youth or,
- 4:36you know, all that sort of stuff. And then Freud and
- 4:40you psychiatrists came along and you ruined it because nobody
- 4:44believes in the soul anymore. You've got all this unconsciousness
- 4:47nonsense. No one makes a deal with the devil.
- 4:52For his unconscious. So here's
- 4:57what I want you to do. I want you, the famous psychiatrist, to shoot me
- 5:00dead because you believe I'm the devil. Psychiatry will
- 5:03be discredited. People will go back to believing again
- 5:08in God and the devil, real good and real evil. I'm back in business.
- 5:11What do you say? Well, of course she scoffs, and the rest of the movie
- 5:14is what he does to prove to her that he
- 5:17really is the devil. Now, one of the reasons I like this movie was because
- 5:21it showed all those smug, utterly smug,
- 5:25skeptical, cynical,
- 5:28worldly-wise, highly credentialed scientists
- 5:33could not deal with evil.
- 5:37And you might say, duh, how can a Christian
- 5:41be surprised? Well, Not so fast,
- 5:46not so fast. The perennial wisdom of
- 5:50the church from the time of the apostles has
- 5:54been that the only answer to intractable
- 5:58evil is Christ crucified
- 6:02and risen, and that's it. And since I've
- 6:06been working in media, coming up on 8 years now, it seems to
- 6:10me that there are a lot of members of the Catholic Cadres of
- 6:14the People Who Should Really Know Better Club. And people suggest that maybe
- 6:17even senior members of that Catholic Cadre of People Who Really Should Know
- 6:21Better Club don't have a category for dealing
- 6:25with intractable evil anymore, because apparently everything,
- 6:30everything can be resolved with dialogue
- 6:36and listening. An accompaniment.
- 6:40And apparently, as some people tell me, they say you
- 6:44just click your heels 3 times and you say synodality, and we all live
- 6:48happily ever after. Maybe even joining particular
- 6:53Italian archbishop, president of Pontifical Academy, singing rousing
- 6:57choruses of John Lennon's Imagine.
- 7:02And it doesn't work. It's like that vampire
- 7:06movie from the '80s, Silly Boy, That Only Works If You Believe.
- 7:10But at least the boy who didn't believe was presenting the crucifix.
- 7:15I'm wondering if some members of
- 7:19the Catholic cadres of the People Who Should Really Know
- 7:23Better club taking a bureaucratic approach rather
- 7:26than a specifically Christian approach.
- 7:29Bureaucrats, every time they say a problem, well, you've got to have
- 7:33meetings and you're going to produce support and we're to need a budget.
- 7:37Ka-ching. And we talk about talking about
- 7:41talking about talking, and we propose solutions and we dialogue,
- 7:45lather, rinse, repeat, and nothing,
- 7:51nothing gets done. And Christ crucified
- 7:55and risen is not preached, presented, or invoked.
- 8:00And I think that's part of the mess that we're in. You say,
- 8:04well, Father, well, what do we do about that?
- 8:06I'm turning to you now because I'm open to suggestions.
- 8:10This has been bothering me for a while. I've been scribbling about it, praying about
- 8:14it, talking about it with friends, doing a lot of research. So let me know
- 8:17how you want me to handle this idea that
- 8:22we've forgotten to invoke Christ, him crucified
- 8:27and risen, in confronting evil. Do you want me to write about
- 8:31it, a quick essay online? Do you think I should write a longer essay?
- 8:34Uh, in an old-fashioned, you know, paper magazine?
- 8:38Should I do a brief video, a longer video, a series of videos?
- 8:42What do you think would work best as we explore this issue together?
- 8:47Let me know in the comments section or contact me at thestationofthecross.com/askfather.
- 8:55Saint Paul said we preach Christ crucified.
- 9:00I want to do that. I think we should all invoke
- 9:04Christ. We need to stand before the world, the flesh,
- 9:07and the devil and present Christ crucified and say,
- 9:11Ave Crux, spes unica.
- 9:15Hail to the cross, our only hope. I really
- 9:19do want to hear from you. Meanwhile, think on these things today, take them
- 9:22to prayer, and talk about it with those you love. Go in peace, and please
- 9:26do pray for me, for I am a sinner.
