Transcript
- 0:02Probably. You get.
- 0:04That knows. Yeah, I got that right on tape.
- 0:06What's up everybody? It's Kefi of ghostcultmag.com.
- 0:10I am super stoked to be joined by two friends to Ghost Cult,
- 0:13Jed Simon and Kaylin Chase of Vimick and many other projects.
- 0:16How are you guys doing? Good.
- 0:19Doing well, man. All right, you know, we're here
- 0:22to talk about the the comeback of Vimick in a way, and we're
- 0:26getting the unreleased album coming out after an extremely
- 0:30successful Kickstarter, which had to be super gratifying.
- 0:33Kaylin, you and I in the past, we've talked about, you know,
- 0:38Joey and what he meant to you and working on this project and
- 0:41band. And it's kind of how a lot of
- 0:44people got introduced to you in the in the heavy music world,
- 0:47not the regular music world. But, you know, thoughts on this
- 0:51record finally see in the light of day.
- 0:55I mean, there was a lot of thoughts.
- 0:57First off, I can speak for all of us where we were very
- 1:00surprised early in the year when Annie and Katie reached out to
- 1:04me and said it was going to happen.
- 1:06And you know, well, they didn't say it was going to happen.
- 1:08They said, hey, we want to do this.
- 1:09We got the rights. And I said, well, honor bound
- 1:13and we rallied the troops. And through this, it's been so
- 1:17incredibly exciting and, and terrifying and sad and happy and
- 1:22bittersweet. It's it's got all of it.
- 1:24I think I accident, I, I, I don't know.
- 1:26I've I've gone through every emotion and I still am.
- 1:29But the most important thing is it's fucking happening.
- 1:32Yeah. Yeah, Jed is like the lawn
- 1:35Chanee of metal. He's been in so many projects
- 1:38and bands, but this is a very special one for you.
- 1:41I know. And you know you put your blood,
- 1:43sweat and tears into this thing, right?
- 1:46Yeah, I think we all pretty much put about as much as one could
- 1:49put into a band. And it was fraught with, you
- 1:53know, hiccups and the highest of highs and sometimes the lowest
- 1:57of lows. And and to get to this point, I
- 2:00guess where we're at now is, is a damn good feeling.
- 2:05Because like Caleb said, none of us thought they would ever come
- 2:08to this. And we'd always talked about it,
- 2:11you know, when we were together, you know, hanging out and stuff,
- 2:15you know, boy, wouldn't it be nice if so.
- 2:18So to have it come to fruition and to have, you know, Katie and
- 2:24and Annie and everybody else involved to do the amount of
- 2:27work it took to get it to where it's at now.
- 2:30It's, it's just all good. So there's, there's not a single
- 2:33bad thing going on here. This is, this is for, this is
- 2:37for love, you know? Oh yes.
- 2:41Yeah, I'm, I'm super stoked. You know, it seems like in a
- 2:45good way, everything is kind of coming up Joey in the best
- 2:48possible way, right? Like we lost him, but we have
- 2:51the music and we have the the memories and one of two projects
- 2:56going on right now celebrating him, which is just marvelous and
- 3:00wonderful. And obviously, you know,
- 3:02obviously Slipknot, whatever they do, every show, they're
- 3:04they're paying tribute, they're paying, they're paying it back.
- 3:07So, you know, nice to know. And yeah, I'm such a big fan of
- 3:12this band. So I, I, I'm count me as one of
- 3:14those people. When I saw the trailer hit for
- 3:17this record coming out, I oh, hey, we got a cat, cat friends,
- 3:23a good luck black cat. Nice.
- 3:26The cat also loves Joey. And we I got choked up a little
- 3:30seeing that trailer. Like, I'm not going to lie, it
- 3:33was, you know, hit me at that moment like, Oh my gosh, this is
- 3:36happening. So I'm sure it was the same for
- 3:39both of you. Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 3:44You know, even just doing those little bits that we did and, and
- 3:46seeing the everything that I see that has anything to do with
- 3:50this is, is tear jerking, tear inducing.
- 3:57So there's a lot of emotion wrapped up in all of this for
- 3:59and each of us has our own little slice of emotion that
- 4:04that needs, that needs to be put to rest in in a comfortable way,
- 4:10you know, and the there's, there's a lot of wounds that
- 4:12have been torn open, but they're going to heal now, I hope, you
- 4:18know. That is the idea.
- 4:20I think this is cathartic. It's a great word.
- 4:23It's nice Scrabble word, but it's real.
- 4:26I didn't realize that. I hadn't processed hardly any of
- 4:29it. You know, I thought I was.
- 4:31I thought I'd grieve my friend and I thought I grieved the band
- 4:34and I thought I grieved the hiccup in the professional
- 4:37career. And then I realized that, yeah,
- 4:39I didn't give a shit about anything other than I remember
- 4:41when it first came out, I, I got emotional and I was like, I just
- 4:44missed my buddy. And then I stopped feeling sorry
- 4:47for myself. And I said, wow, I have an
- 4:48opportunity to celebrate him in the best fucking possible way.
- 4:53And that's been the driving force.
- 4:54I think what I've at least what I've seen with everybody
- 4:57involved, it's so many people stepped up, not to mention the
- 5:01the fans who made this possible with our crowdfunding.
- 5:03It's I'm when I said rally the troops, I was talking about the
- 5:07boys and Vimick. And then it just kept growing
- 5:10and everyone came together in the most beautiful way and I am
- 5:15just blown away by it. Yeah, yeah, just the, the
- 5:18support through and through is is pretty awe inspiring.
- 5:25I'm one of those people. I work as a marketer
- 5:27professionally in music and other and other things, and I'm
- 5:30always the guy that says don't read the comments.
- 5:32But in this case, Reddit has been a wonderful community for
- 5:37Joey and his legacy and and open your own men in particular has
- 5:42like has a mythological level of excitement.
- 5:47Like, you know, I don't know what to a sports movie.
- 5:50I don't know what to compare it to Star Wars, like people are
- 5:54like overjoyed that this thing is happening, that this show is
- 5:57happening October 3rd, you know, just unbelievable.
- 6:02And I don't want to miss the chance to talk about the Joey
- 6:05Jordison Charitable Fund where the proceeds will go and which I
- 6:10think is going to be ongoing. It's not just this is not a one
- 6:12time, you know, let's do something once and and Dash, I
- 6:16think this is going to go on and on.
- 6:17The family has done a very nice job in really getting organized.
- 6:22You see sometimes with things like this where you know,
- 6:26there's it's, you know, I don't want to say suspect, but
- 6:29difficult to pull together because it's a loved one and
- 6:34it's hard to you don't get the distance to run something like
- 6:37this. So I've been very impressed on
- 6:39the outside looking in about how this has all been put together.
- 6:43Yeah, it's, it's been a ton of work for, for all those folks
- 6:46involved, you know, you know, it feels like we, we've done a ton
- 6:51of work too, but that the amount of logistical stuff that they've
- 6:55had to do and legal stuff is, is a hill that I can't even imagine
- 7:00climbing, you know? No, no, that's when when the
- 7:04sisters called me, I immediately talked to my manager, Crystal
- 7:08Ganz from Mind Our Music and said, hey, they're asking me
- 7:12questions that my pea brain doesn't understand.
- 7:15Can you? Can you?
- 7:16And Mind Our Music is her management company.
- 7:19So I just call her mom and I usually call her mom like this
- 7:22mom shit my pants. Why didn't I think of that
- 7:27already? Mom, of course.
- 7:28Crystal is is mom in a way. Oh yeah, she's been, she's been
- 7:32so like Annie, Katie and Crystal and not to mention so many other
- 7:36people, like it's impossible to name them all, but the family
- 7:38came together, the fans, this group and so many volunteers
- 7:43that will be named. But it we all have our special
- 7:48talents. And I think we've allowed
- 7:51ourselves to kind of facilitate where we excel at.
- 7:54And it's been very clear when somebody's trying to take
- 7:56something on that is not their strong suit.
- 7:59And we've all been really good at saying, Nope, not for me,
- 8:01somebody else do this. Yeah, at least I I could say
- 8:04that for myself especially. Yeah.
- 8:06No, that's that. I think the duties have been
- 8:09meted out accordingly as we've gone on, have stepped up.
- 8:17Right on red, the Kickstarter. I know that crowdfunding has
- 8:21gotten a little bit of a black eye since the pandemic, and but
- 8:26I have to say I thought it was done extremely well.
- 8:29Like I said, the trailer hooked me and I think it it definitely
- 8:33met the goal well ahead of time, which is very impressive.
- 8:37But in general, like, I love seeing the Kickstarter because
- 8:41that you could see in real time people reacting to this to open
- 8:45your own and being released and, and the full vinyl treatment and
- 8:49sort of like this is your moment, get this thing, it's
- 8:52probably not going to ever happen again.
- 8:54And you know, get your copy now. So I think that's, you know,
- 8:58really wonderful. I know there's the double LP in
- 9:01the CD version and merch and everything.
- 9:03And they were merch options and ways to show love and support.
- 9:06And people were commenting, you know, how did you feel about it
- 9:09while it was ongoing, before it was completed?
- 9:14I didn't know what the fuck was going on.
- 9:17I. That's why I was waiting for you
- 9:19to answer. Yeah, no, I, I, this isn't my
- 9:23strong suit. I, I dabble with the concept of
- 9:25doing a crowdfunding for myself. And I nixed the idea because of
- 9:29some of the bad taste I had in my mouth.
- 9:30And I had my own reasons. And, and then I realized that
- 9:34that's my own bullshit. And this was such a beautiful
- 9:37pure. I mean, if, if I haven't seen
- 9:40any bad comments and I actually looked a bit myself, which I
- 9:43normally don't do, but this is a pure thing.
- 9:47And our intentions were made very clear and they are exactly
- 9:49what they are. So while it was happening, I was
- 9:53kind of just getting used to the concept that we were literally
- 9:57being produced by everyone who loves us.
- 9:59Like everyone's got a credit in a sense.
- 10:01Not legally, of course, you guys can fuck off.
- 10:03I love you. But but this, this was a, a
- 10:07communal effort. And as it happened and as it
- 10:10happened quickly, we were like, Oh, well, I guess there's people
- 10:12who want this. I kind of, I don't remember who
- 10:15said or how it was said, but the paraphrase is well fuck, now we
- 10:18have to do it. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 10:22It's, it's, I think it's about the purest form of crowdfunding
- 10:28you know, you can have because it's, it's absolutely for a good
- 10:31cause. And there's, there's nothing,
- 10:33there's no bullshit going on behind the scenes.
- 10:37You know, it's, it's for Joey. There's the money goes right
- 10:41back to this charitable foundation, you know, apart from
- 10:44expenses, you know, which there are a lot of.
- 10:47Yeah, well, Chad, you have 3 chimpanzees coming just for your
- 10:50entertainment that we'd had to. When did the elephants get
- 10:53delivered? Oh.
- 10:55Did we put air holes in the crates?
- 10:56Yeah, just basic expenses. To make to share holes.
- 10:59I told you to put air holes by bad anyway.
- 11:02We'll get new ones. I digress.
- 11:05It's all for a good 'cause, you know, that's why we can joke
- 11:07about it and and feel there's no, this is a shame, a shameless
- 11:12thing. Is that the right word?
- 11:14I believe so. It's every possible reason for
- 11:18this to happen. That's good applies because it's
- 11:21it's it's all for the better Good.
- 11:24Yep, I know we. Don't have any empirical
- 11:26evidence about pachyderms, but I'm pretty sure it's just one
- 11:29hole is all you really need for those those guys, right?
- 11:32Just one big hole for the trunk to kind of.
- 11:34Peek out. Yeah, yeah, well, oops.
- 11:38Like. A blowhole on a whale or a ship?
- 11:43Right on. Let me let me just ask like an
- 11:45actual brass tacks question is like how much time have you
- 11:48spent with this record before recent times?
- 11:51Is this something you guys put down and Joey passed and that
- 11:56was it? You didn't return to it?
- 11:58Have you revisited this record before recently to just ever?
- 12:03That's an easy answer for me. The amount of time I spent with
- 12:05it is exactly that much. There's too much pain at fault.
- 12:09And that for me, that stemmed back to before Joey passed away,
- 12:13because there was, there's a lot of shit going on and it hurt,
- 12:19you know, you could see things happening and, and, you know,
- 12:23as, as a band, we tried to do things and, and it, I get too
- 12:29deep into it, but yeah, I, I, it was hard for me to listen to the
- 12:32music, you know? And then Kaylyn came up and
- 12:35visited me. What was that?
- 12:37That wasn't too long ago and. No, a few, a couple years I
- 12:40think. He bestowed his copy of the the
- 12:43original copy of the CD on me because I'd taken mine and
- 12:45smashed against my wall a few years ago just in a drunken rage
- 12:49or whatever, you know, emotions. And that was when I started.
- 12:54That was when I started kind of I'm like, fuck, this is good,
- 12:58man. I should spend a little more
- 12:59time with this. And then of course, everything
- 13:00happened this year and I'm like, holy cow.
- 13:03I got a lot of a lot of songs to relearn that I had literally
- 13:05completely forgotten. So the reason, you know, doing
- 13:13all this is, is brought joy because it feels good to do
- 13:17this. It's not.
- 13:18There's no, there's nothing's being forced.
- 13:20And it's nice to reacquaint with music I thought I'd never listen
- 13:23to again, you know? That's.
- 13:25Exactly how it was. That's just me personally.
- 13:28I can speak for myself as well because I don't know, like it's
- 13:31been interesting. The second that we got back
- 13:33together, all, all of us, all the remaining members of VIMIC,
- 13:37it was, I said it was like, wow, I feel like we just got off the
- 13:40plane from Europe in 2018. Everything fit.
- 13:44But there is. And we've, we've been open with
- 13:47each other and we've talked many, many times and we've hung
- 13:49out many, many times off and on different people.
- 13:51But there has definitely been aspects of this that very rarely
- 13:56get brought up, especially before this year, because we're
- 13:59all processing in our own way. I, I listened to here and there
- 14:03a couple times and then when Joey passed that I hadn't, I
- 14:07hadn't even gone near it. And so when, like with Jed, when
- 14:14this all started happening, I had to reacquaint myself.
- 14:17And it was the same reaction, like because there was suddenly
- 14:20a reason to do it and it wasn't me, you know, potentially
- 14:25getting hammered and sitting alone in my my office and
- 14:28listening to what could have been.
- 14:29There was no regret. There was no licking my wounds,
- 14:32being a victim bullshit. It was like, wow, we have a, we
- 14:35have a mission. This is like as close to AD and
- 14:37D campaign as I've ever had. I've got all these random
- 14:40assholes and we are flying by the seat of our pants.
- 14:44And I think the the best quote I've got for this that I've
- 14:48paraphrased from somebody from AD and D campaign is it feels
- 14:51like it's going to fall apart at every fucking second.
- 14:54And that means it's doomed to succeed.
- 14:57Yeah, yeah. That's that's your pull quote
- 15:00right there, right in the childhood D&D and Caitlin, like
- 15:04we've talked before, right a few times and and I know you're such
- 15:07a versatile vocalist, but this is clearly like, you know, a
- 15:13special chapter in your career. Do you have to like retrain
- 15:16certain parts of your game just to be able to pull some of this
- 15:19off? Live at the show coming up in a
- 15:21few weeks as we record this. Yeah, I had to retrain
- 15:25everything because I was also out of Commission for about 2
- 15:281/2 years with chronic sinusitis.
- 15:31I had two surgeries, didn't know if I was ever going to sing
- 15:34again, and I'd just gotten back into fighting shape just to sing
- 15:39my, my ultra, you know, whimsy, fucking crooning shit.
- 15:44And all of a sudden I have to do extreme metal.
- 15:46So I, I've been working as hard as I Poss.
- 15:50I haven't worked this hard since I was doing opera as a teenager.
- 15:53So yes, a lot of retraining. Yeah, that was the that was the
- 15:57topic of our one of one of our previous interviews talking
- 15:59about your your background and, and opera and stuff like that
- 16:03and and vocal training. It's absolutely worlds apart and
- 16:07different, different stuff. Baby yourself and be good to
- 16:10yourself. Congrats on your recovery.
- 16:13I I wasn't fully aware of all that.
- 16:15I think I vaguely knew that you had some medical problems and
- 16:17that was it. Yeah.
- 16:18There was a, there was, it was a big, I, I don't like, you know,
- 16:23talking too much about it just because it's like, hey,
- 16:25especially right now we're here to talk about positive things.
- 16:28But it was an amazing challenge and I'm super blessed that I got
- 16:31through it. And now I get to pretend I'm in
- 16:34my 30s again. And that's funny.
- 16:39Right on. Well, Jed and I can tell you
- 16:41it's yeah, hindsight is 2020 for your 30s, but yeah, no, it's all
- 16:47good. It's all good.
- 16:49My hindsight is legally blind, so it doesn't matter.
- 16:52That's that's correct. But maybe, and maybe that's your
- 16:55superpower though, on top of singing.
- 16:59So we got the show coming up and obviously you got to get a set
- 17:02list together from this album and and all the singles and
- 17:05things people want to hear. And you have some very special
- 17:08guests. Obviously Joey is irreplaceable
- 17:10as a person and a drummer, but you have extremely talented
- 17:13folks who are going to sit the throne and and jam.
- 17:16So I think that's also super exciting.
- 17:19You want to talk about the process.
- 17:21I know you know some of those people.
- 17:22Well, do you want to talk about the process of choosing some of
- 17:25those guests? Well, I'm just going to, I'm
- 17:28going to throw this to Jed, but I'm going to say right now that
- 17:31if it wasn't for Jed's connection to his fellow
- 17:34Canadian Ash Pearson, we would be all in a state of panic right
- 17:38now, having Ash as kind of our main guy from Three Inches of
- 17:43Blood, a band that Joey produced before Ash was in the band.
- 17:46But when Jed said Ash, I was like, that is so friggin
- 17:49perfect. So right away I'll I'll field it
- 17:52to you, Jed, about all that. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:56Ash came to mind immediately. So did Jean, sort of Thomas from
- 17:59Shoga. But you know, eventually it, you
- 18:03know, because Ash had a, a working personal relationship
- 18:07with Joey that it was a no brainer.
- 18:08And his sisters apparently had been looking for him.
- 18:11They, I don't know if they couldn't remember who he was.
- 18:13I don't know how it happened, but I mentioned his name.
- 18:15They're like, that's the guy we've been looking for now.
- 18:17He's one of my best friends. So, you know, it all came
- 18:20together really quick. You know, Ash is in Ash is like
- 18:22Ash is like all us guys is strapping where when we were
- 18:25younger, we're we're in 27 bands at all times, you know, and Ash
- 18:28is doing that right now and it's it's the guy can pull it
- 18:33together. He's such he's such a
- 18:34professional, but he's going to he's going to handle the duties
- 18:37for for the the heaviest stuff. And he's also pretty technically
- 18:42adept. So he's put together the click
- 18:44tracks and kind of got everything on his technical end
- 18:47together to make it flow better for all of us.
- 18:50So that, that's really cool. The other drummers I don't, you
- 18:57know, of course, now I'm sitting here doing an interview and I
- 18:58can't think of who's who. All I can think is Dean
- 19:00Castronova, 'cause I can't wait to meet that guy because I
- 19:03absolutely worship his drumming. So.
- 19:08Dean is the boss. Man, that's that's a huge again,
- 19:11Chris from accept from. Crypto.
- 19:16Yeah, I've met her. That's about it.
- 19:19Yeah. And then we got we got Caleb,
- 19:22that child prodigy, we got Dean son Kyle.
- 19:27We have my former drummer Kyle Mayer, who played with 10 Years
- 19:30and is currently in September Morning, but he played with me
- 19:35in The Changing and Joey played with us on Family Values in
- 19:382007. Not to mention Kyle helped me
- 19:41with the first demos of the Vimick vocals I was doing in LA
- 19:44when Joey was in Iowa. So we were trying to bring
- 19:47people that are connected to him, not only people who love
- 19:50him. And, and there's gonna be more
- 19:52and there's gonna be some surprises, but every, every
- 19:55single person involved has just shown up in the most positive.
- 20:02Supportive way and all the music jokes about drummers being this
- 20:06way basically like everyone has thrown all pretenses out the
- 20:10window and people are just boots on the ground getting this shit
- 20:14done and and bending over backwards for it.
- 20:16So we're very excited about the the the drummers and we have got
- 20:22a good set list and some good form.
- 20:24I'm, I'm unfortunately or fortunately, depending on whose
- 20:26perspective it is the music director of this thing.
- 20:29So I had to figure out a way. How do we get, you know, Baker's
- 20:33dozen of fucking drummers in and out and without making it a
- 20:36nightmare. So we have a good plan.
- 20:38We'll see how it goes. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:41The the pieces all, all that work is, is, is coming together
- 20:44now and all it's left to do is is get to LA, you know, in the
- 20:51next few days or however many days it is and, and hammer it
- 20:54out again and, and hammer it out with the guests to our dress
- 20:58rehearsal and, and hit. It.
- 21:01Man, that's it and I'm I'm I'm looking forward to it now.
- 21:05I'm nervous, but that's that's, I've also been like that, but
- 21:09what's what's what's bothering me now and I just have to get
- 21:11out over it Is, is like, I'm like what's going to happen
- 21:14after, you know, that's going to be there's going to be an
- 21:17emotional outburst. I I suppose you could say,
- 21:21because you know, we did it, you know, Yeah.
- 21:24And and oof, going to be a lot of clinks flying around at that
- 21:28time probably. Yeah, well, be kind to yourself
- 21:31because you know, again, there's no real there.
- 21:34There are actual rulebooks on grieving, but they don't really
- 21:37apply right Like we're all you're still human.
- 21:40So be good to yourself and be fair to yourself.
- 21:42Also keeping it in the family friend to ghost cult and huge GI
- 21:46Joe nerd like me. Wednesday 13.
- 21:49So it's going to be like a whole night of Joey music.
- 21:51You know, because Wednesday has been doing murdered all stuff in
- 21:54the set for a long time. They.
- 21:56Go back so far. They were.
- 21:57They were so close and Wednesday's great and we you
- 22:01know, we've covered him all over the world and his band.
- 22:04So killer new album, a lot of fun stuff going on there.
- 22:07And of course they'll probably be like a heavy murder dolls,
- 22:11you know, influence there on the set list.
- 22:13I'm I'm certain Tetragram. We've covered a lot of shows.
- 22:17Their great venue, you know, just all coming together.
- 22:20Joey's charitable fund along with Broken Strings, which is
- 22:23the partnership from the nonprofit in Iowa.
- 22:26Just, you know, can't say enough positive and good things.
- 22:28This is like a feel good story. I know it's going to be hard,
- 22:31but I appreciate the both of you and the rest of the band and
- 22:35everybody involved for pulling this together and doing this
- 22:37and, and shout out to the PR major and for putting us
- 22:40together because I wanted to talk to you about this.
- 22:43I'm really glad because I was a big fan of this band and I had
- 22:46a, you know, I'm hope I'm hopeful to get a copy on CD or
- 22:50vinyl at some point somehow. And I'll be, I'll be scanning
- 22:55disc hogs for a vinyl probably soon and once, once they're in
- 22:59the hands of people. And I can't thank you enough as
- 23:03a fan for doing this. I know how hard it has to be to
- 23:06put yourself in this position. But I'm appreciative that it's
- 23:09all for the right reasons, like you said, Jed.
- 23:11Yeah, it is. So it's, it's, it's a feel good
- 23:14thing with, you know, the heavy overtones.
- 23:18Yep, of course, Jed and Kaylin, we'll do it again sometime soon
- 23:22talking about other stuff. But thank you so much for
- 23:24hanging out with Ghost Call today and RIP and hails to Joey
- 23:27Jordison always. Hell yeah, man, absolutely.
- 23:29Thank you. We'll see you soon.
- 23:31Take care. OK, man.
- 23:33Later. Peace.
