Latest / Sports Card Clubhouse / Will PSA's Price Hike Affect Anything?
Transcript
- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:03the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:15together to talk cards. Hey buddy, you look so much
- 0:20different than you did last week.
- 0:25Man, Jake did a fantastic job and you were great, obviously,
- 0:28as you always are. But you know, I listened to
- 0:31that. I finally got a chance to listen
- 0:32to that episode on my drive home on Tuesday and it was so good.
- 0:36I loved, I listened to the whole thing.
- 0:38The Jackie Robinson talk at the end was really, really good.
- 0:42That PSA one that sold, I never would have guessed $27,000 like
- 0:47you could have told me. This is the nicest one ever.
- 0:50How much do you think it sold for?
- 0:52I would have guessed like high teens, low 20s would be an
- 0:56aggressive number. The I Appeal movement is real.
- 1:02It is here to stay. It is not going away.
- 1:06People want to look at things that look nice.
- 1:10They don't want to look at things that don't look nice.
- 1:13Look at that. I just, I mean, that's ground
- 1:16breaking than what I just said. Which is probably why people
- 1:19prefer Podcast and Of Us. I mean, it's got to be which we
- 1:24might talk about that a little bit later.
- 1:26The podcast versus YouTube of us.
- 1:28We'll, we'll, we'll talk about it.
- 1:29But you had something to get us started before our main topic of
- 1:34the day that I would love to pick your brain about.
- 1:38Yeah, So, you know, it's fun. It's normally we used to when we
- 1:42would start this, we would catch up before, before we'd start
- 1:44recording, talk about our lives and stuff.
- 1:47But we've kind of turn that into the podcast.
- 1:50There's a there's a lot of our lives now and, and fun little
- 1:53side things. And I had something that's
- 1:57happening right now. And I want to ask you, if you if
- 2:00your wife and kids were gone for three days, leaving you home
- 2:07alone, what would you do with yourself?
- 2:10Oh my goodness. Let's let's keep this
- 2:12appropriate. Jeez, well first of all, let me
- 2:16back up and say happy birthday. You did have a birthday since
- 2:20the last time. So happy birthday to you my
- 2:22friend. I appreciate it.
- 2:24That's a great question. I am a person.
- 2:29Sorry, by the way. By the way, you have no car
- 2:32because you only have one family vehicle and they took your one
- 2:35vehicle. OK, so that would be such a
- 2:41different question than it used to be.
- 2:44I do a lot of yard work and I do a lot of yard work for different
- 2:48reasons. One, I do a lot of yard work
- 2:50because I like it when my yard looks nice.
- 2:52Two, I think it's fun exercise. Three, I like taking something
- 2:56ugly and making it look pretty, and yard work allows me to do
- 3:01those things. So I would spend at least one of
- 3:03those days doing like my spring cleaning where I do extra yard
- 3:09work stuff would definitely be one of the three days.
- 3:14My wife one time when when I was it's been a long time since I've
- 3:18had something like that, but my wife one time laughed in the
- 3:23morning and came back late that night.
- 3:26And this is a few years ago and there's ATV show called The
- 3:32first 48 and the first 48 is there's basically a camera crew
- 3:38with an actual murder investigation unit in different
- 3:44cities and they document the whole investigation and
- 3:48everything. And I literally from the moment
- 3:51my wife left, like 10 hours, I just watched episode after
- 3:55episode after episode. I don't.
- 3:58I'm not into TV right now that I haven't watched anything other
- 4:02than sports in a while. So some yard work, I'd probably
- 4:10go play a few holes of golf. I would probably.
- 4:15You live on a golf course, you don't need a vehicle.
- 4:18Yeah, I have AI have a golf cart in my garage.
- 4:21I just opened the garage and get in my golf cart and drive over
- 4:24to the the hole I want to start on.
- 4:28So and honestly I'd probably knock out a couple of videos
- 4:33ahead of time that way when they come back then we could actually
- 4:36hang out. So I'm going to guess that you
- 4:40would tell me how I would do. You would have at least one day
- 4:44that would be a horror movie marathon and you would probably
- 4:48have a box of Cheez. Its probably the white cheddar
- 4:53Cheez. Its with you Cheddar Jack.
- 4:57And holding up for anybody listening, I'm holding up a box
- 4:59of Cheez its that sits on my desk at all times.
- 5:01So you'd have a box of the cheddar, white cheddar cheddar
- 5:05Jack Cheez. Its you would do at least one
- 5:07day of horror movies. I think that you would probably
- 5:15get some cards together to send off to Comp C.
- 5:19And what else would you do? You might and I I don't think
- 5:24you'd eat very healthy. Man, this is alarming how well
- 5:32you know me after such a short period of time.
- 5:34So as of 2:30 this afternoon, which was 3 1/2 hours ago, I was
- 5:42by myself until Sunday afternoon and I, I worked until, I don't
- 5:48know, 4/30, 5:00 and I sat down and I had some dinner, which was
- 5:53pizza, of course. And I was watching, I was
- 5:55watching The Sandlot, which I haven't watched in decades.
- 5:58And tonight, after we're done with this podcast, I am going to
- 6:03watch a horror movie tomorrow. I have to work all day,
- 6:08unfortunately. I tried getting the day off,
- 6:10couldn't, didn't work out, I was too slow.
- 6:14But then tomorrow night, I don't know what I'm going to do.
- 6:17I think probably another horror movie within Saturday.
- 6:21I'm spending the day a lot, a significant chunk of the day
- 6:25working here in my office. And which means putting things
- 6:29on the walls, which I have not had time to do because I once
- 6:32I'm done with work in here, I go up and spend time with my wife
- 6:35and my kids. And, but I am going to put stuff
- 6:40on the walls. I'm going to organize my cards.
- 6:42I'm going to do all the things that I've been saying.
- 6:44I'm going to do this soon. I'm going to do this soon.
- 6:47And I'm not sending cards to Com C, but you were close.
- 6:49I'm going to send some cards to CGCJSA.
- 6:54Which might be a good lead into our conversation.
- 6:58I do want to say this though, I, I, I remembered something as you
- 7:01were speaking that I, I have added a lot of my cards in my
- 7:07collection into my card ladder collection and I want to put
- 7:11them all in. And so I need to raw that up.
- 7:16No, not raw stuff, just degraded stuff.
- 7:19Most of my raw stuff is autos. I have a lot of raw autos, which
- 7:26again, the you, you going with CGCJSA is, is interesting and
- 7:32and it does perfectly lead us into, into our, our first topic.
- 7:40But let me just do a little bit of a sidebar and say you're not
- 7:45selling those cards in Comp C, but if you were selling cards
- 7:49somewhere like a collection per SE, where would you go to sell
- 7:53those cards? Mike, I would as always go with
- 7:56Chris Sewell, baseball card collector, investor, dealer, in
- 7:59that order. Our friend, our sponsor of
- 8:01Surface Issues is Chris Sewell. And if I were selling my
- 8:04collection, in fact, I have a document that's saved in my
- 8:08Google Drive for my wife. If something ever happens to me,
- 8:12it does say reach out to Chris Sewell.
- 8:14Here's his phone number. He will buy my collection.
- 8:17He will give the best price, the most value and a good
- 8:21explanation of how. And, and I would recommend to
- 8:24anybody, but they if they're looking to sell part or all of
- 8:27their collection, they reach out to Chris at
- 8:29sewellsportscards@gmail.com. You can also go to our website
- 8:33sportscardclubhouse.com and reach out to him through there.
- 8:37It has his his address has his website, sportscardclubhouse.com
- 8:42or just e-mail him at sewellsportscards@gmail.com.
- 8:47Now it's interesting because probably the most common
- 8:52question genuinely, because I've been doing my Q&A episodes every
- 8:56Wednesday for three years and they literally, it started
- 9:02almost to the day three years ago and I think I missed one
- 9:05Wednesday out of those. So about 150 of them that I've
- 9:09done. And the most common question
- 9:12slash concern slash theme that I get is what do I do to make sure
- 9:17that whoever ends up with my collection doesn't get ripped
- 9:20off? Do I have to get my cards
- 9:22graded? Because I'm afraid of that.
- 9:25And I genuinely mean this when I say this.
- 9:29If somebody called Chris and the cards were raw, I, I know that
- 9:35they would be treated fairly and they would not have what the
- 9:38local card shop is going to do to them.
- 9:40So it is something for people to consider as you do need an, an
- 9:44exit strategy after we make our exit.
- 9:48And I, I think it's a very, very good option.
- 9:52Now our, our topic for the week. Now, I watched Neo's video.
- 9:59Actually, I take that back. Neo has done a couple of videos
- 10:01about this. I, I watched the 1 today.
- 10:05We're recording this on February 12th.
- 10:07I also watched your video, which I want to say was a day or two
- 10:12ago, I can't remember, about PSA raising their prices, extending
- 10:18how long the cards are going to be to get returned.
- 10:22But really the big thing was the price is going up.
- 10:25So let me this is sort of the news of the moment.
- 10:30And I know that some people hate the card grading discussion, but
- 10:36it's undeniable that the grades and grading and grading
- 10:40companies are a major piece of what is happening in the hobby.
- 10:44So we do need to stay apprised of it.
- 10:47So let me just start with this. They raised the prices about $5
- 10:51per level per card in some cases.
- 10:54That's about a 20% increase, right?
- 10:59Do you think that's going to slow down submissions?
- 11:03I think it will slow them down some and that is their stated
- 11:06reason why. But I think the real reason why
- 11:10is they know that there is an appetite to continue paying for
- 11:16grading. And so let's say they say we're
- 11:18going to receive 10% fewer submissions, but at 20 to 25%
- 11:25more revenue, it's worth it. And, and they don't need to
- 11:31invest significantly more money in, in capacity to accommodate,
- 11:38you know, at at $18.20 one dollars, whatever it is, if they
- 11:43continue to receive cards in at that level, they have to invest
- 11:50in capacity or they can Jack up their prices and continue
- 11:54receiving 85% of the volume. And they don't need to pay
- 12:00investing capacity. And when I say capacity, I mean
- 12:03people, graders, authenticators along the entire production
- 12:09line. It's one of these things where,
- 12:13listen, I'm a collector and I want PSA and SGC and Beckett to
- 12:18be really, really cheap and really, really fast.
- 12:20That's what I want as a customer.
- 12:23That's what I want. But that's not how business
- 12:28works. And people get so angry and like
- 12:31hurt when PSA does something like raise the prices, like
- 12:36they're, they're like offended. And I have a lot of students
- 12:39that work in fast food restaurants and they say, yeah,
- 12:41when we raise prices, like people will yell at us because
- 12:45they get the same thing every time.
- 12:46They're like, why did it go up $0.40?
- 12:48And they're like, I don't like people get mad when the prices
- 12:53go up. But there are certain industries
- 12:58that are very dynamic pricing, right?
- 13:01It's like if if the flight, let's use the hotel.
- 13:06So Embassy Suites we're staying at in what's the name of the
- 13:10town we're going to The Strongsville show is now in
- 13:13Independence. OK, When we first you and I
- 13:18first heard it was being moved to Independence, the first thing
- 13:21that about 10 or 15 of us did is we said where are you going to
- 13:25stay? We all booked at the same hotel.
- 13:28I'm 100% sure. I haven't looked, but I'm 100%
- 13:32sure if I tried to book that hotel right now, it would be
- 13:35significantly more expensive than what I have already paid
- 13:39for it because it's dynamic pricing.
- 13:41They go, the demand is going up. For some reason, we have fewer
- 13:44rooms available now. I'm going to raise the price to
- 13:48accommodate that. I am flying down tomorrow to the
- 13:52West Coast card show and I guarantee you the person that's
- 13:54going to be sitting next to me did not say paint the same exact
- 13:57price for their ticket for that same exact flight as I paid.
- 14:02So why do we get so upset? No, I it's your problem.
- 14:07You're freezing on me. You're frozen.
- 14:11You're frozen. You're not back yet.
- 14:16You're not. You're still not back.
- 14:18You, you. Your eyes are actually closed.
- 14:20I want to take a picture of how you look right now so I can show
- 14:23you what I see. Your eyes are still shut on the
- 14:28screen, buddy. I can kind of hear you.
- 14:32You're trying, I hear. You hear me just fine.
- 14:35I'm right here. Yes, I hear you now.
- 14:37So your price, your I'm sorry. So my streamer, my Internet is
- 14:42perfect. There is nothing wrong with my
- 14:44Internet. I'm on video calls for work all
- 14:47day long. Now look at that handsome guy.
- 14:50I am on video calls all day long.
- 14:53Never ever ever have any issues. But when I pop in the stream
- 14:57yard, there's always that issue and I am I have raised some
- 15:02concerns with stream yard and they they claim it's my fault
- 15:05and that I need to, you know, hardwire in shouldn't need to
- 15:10hardwire in. I don't hardwire in for any
- 15:13other. I I use Microsoft Teams, I use
- 15:15Webex, I use zoom. There's never ever, ever Anita
- 15:20Stream Yard won't be sponsoring me or this channel because it's
- 15:24garbage. So and it's not cheap.
- 15:28I mean the amount I pay a year for stream yard would blow
- 15:32people's minds. That's crazy.
- 15:34So back to the dynamic pricing, I mean how you price?
- 15:39You price your product for what the market will bear, not you
- 15:44Don't price your product to be nice to people.
- 15:45That's not American capitalism. You price it for what the market
- 15:50will bear. You maximize your revenue.
- 15:52And I totally understand why PSA is doing it.
- 15:56It just it, it's crazy. There's the The prices now are
- 16:01insane. Yeah, they're insane.
- 16:05But like you said, I do understand it.
- 16:10And and when this first news first broke, we're on like a
- 16:13discord together and there's there's a little bunch of guys
- 16:16on it and somebody posted, I think it was TJS online posted.
- 16:20Yeah, the prices are going up. That was like the morning that
- 16:23this news came out and I said and people were mad and I
- 16:29understand why they're mad. I'm not happy about it.
- 16:32But the analogy I used was it's like if I set up a lemonade
- 16:38stand and was charging 1/4 for a cup of lemonade and the first
- 16:44person came up and they took a sip of it and they're like, this
- 16:46is awful. But then the line got five
- 16:50people deep and I raised the price to $0.50 and another
- 16:54person tried it and it was still awful.
- 16:56But then the line went to 30 people deep and I raised the
- 17:00price to a dollar and then $5 and then $10 and the line gets
- 17:04longer and longer and longer. Aren't I crazy?
- 17:07If I don't raise the prices until the demand actually drops,
- 17:12which hasn't happened in years, then why wouldn't they raise the
- 17:18price? Like Disneyland isn't lowering
- 17:21prices and people are packing in that place.
- 17:27Do those Disney fans, do they, you know, throw things at the
- 17:31wall because Disney raised the price?
- 17:34Like, and I know they're going to be people out there that are
- 17:36just going to be pissed because they're like, you're they're
- 17:38defending PSA. I'm not defending PSA.
- 17:42I'm just I understand what they're doing.
- 17:45And if I was in charge of PSA, I don't think I'd do anything
- 17:49differently. Yeah, I love that PSA is now
- 17:53disgusting lemonade but. What I'm seeing is people that
- 17:58try the product are frequently not thrilled with the product.
- 18:03Now some people are. Did, did you see the Super Bowl
- 18:07ad where I don't, I don't know what the ad was for, but the,
- 18:10the catch the tag line at the end was take a blood test today
- 18:14to see if PSA is right for you. And I thought that's, that's
- 18:18coming, PSA They're going to require a blood test and people
- 18:22are going to do it. They're going to be like, can I
- 18:23profit from this? I don't recall that one.
- 18:27The only commercial I remember is the Dunkin' Donuts 1.
- 18:33I I don't remember any other commercial.
- 18:35I wasn't really paying super close attention to any of it.
- 18:39That was a different kind of day for you than it was for me.
- 18:45So, OK, so how is this going to affect because OK, let me back
- 18:50up my my I have an SGC order submitted right now.
- 18:54I mailed it on December 27th and it arrived.
- 19:00I did I did, I did flat rate shipping because I wanted it to
- 19:04be priority and I wanted to be insured and I did flat rate it
- 19:08got there. It got there on December 29th,
- 19:12OK. It was allegedly processed as
- 19:17received on January 8th. So it was like 10 days from the
- 19:24time they actually picked it up. Now, I know that when they
- 19:27picked it up because I, I tracked it because I want to
- 19:29make sure it got there. So from the time they picked it
- 19:32up to the time that they hit the button that said received was 10
- 19:36days. That was on January 8th that
- 19:39said received. It is currently February 12th
- 19:42and it still says received and if I go to their website it says
- 19:46it's 15 to 20 day turn. Around time, not, not anymore as
- 19:49of today, they increased their turn around time to I think 30
- 19:53to 45 or 45 to 60 days today. So that's news to me, which is
- 20:00great. And I I heard on Neo's episode,
- 20:02yeah, it says 40 to 50. Business days, yeah.
- 20:05So let's just review here. When, when, when PSA wasn't, I'm
- 20:13sorry, when Collector's Universe wasn't the parent company.
- 20:17It was 5 to 10 days turn around. Like literally it was a week.
- 20:23And there were times I had my card back in my hand after 10
- 20:28days. And, and then PSA came in the
- 20:32the big company. OK, collector's universe came in
- 20:35the big company who's just got everything dialed in.
- 20:39And within a year and a half, it is now gone from 5 to 10 days to
- 20:4540 to 50. So it's 8 axed that five day
- 20:50turn around 8 axed in a year and a half.
- 20:54Like imagine any company that got 8 times worse in a year and
- 20:59a half, eight times worse. I mean, so, so now it's 40 to 50
- 21:08business days. Now does that apply to me?
- 21:12That seems like that should apply from this point from today
- 21:15forward. It shouldn't apply to me because
- 21:17when I submitted it, the deal that I clicked and I submit and
- 21:22I've by the way, I've already given them my money.
- 21:25They've had my money since 2025 and I don't I don't have my
- 21:31cards and and now. It's wait, whoa, hey, whoa, hang
- 21:34on. SGC is now collecting money
- 21:36upfront. Oh, I guess they always were.
- 21:38And it was PSA that wasn't. Correct.
- 21:40Yeah, OK. Sorry.
- 21:41So they've had my money for two for over.
- 21:44They've had my money for two months.
- 21:46And when I gave them my money, it said 15 to 20 days and and
- 21:51now it says 40 to 50. And now I guess that's just man.
- 21:56Well, I guess they got backed up.
- 21:58I guess, you know, imagine like so like my grades were due on
- 22:02Monday of this week. I had to turn in grades for my
- 22:05students. Imagine if I just called up my
- 22:07principal and said, I know grades are due, but I've really
- 22:10gotten busy lately. I'm doing this podcast and this
- 22:13YouTube thing. So I'll get them to you.
- 22:15I don't know, I'll try to get them to you by May.
- 22:18She would go, huh. What are you talking about,
- 22:20Greg? You don't just get to turn them
- 22:22in whenever you want. You don't get to just make up
- 22:25the rules midway. That's not how it works.
- 22:30SGC So the question I have is why did SGC increase in the end?
- 22:35Why did we both know the answer? Why did they increase their turn
- 22:38around time today, February 12th, 2026, when according to
- 22:44GEM rate their month over month change December to January was
- 22:50only 5% and I believe there were more business days in January
- 22:55than there were in December. There was in all likelihood more
- 23:00capacity in January than there was in December even if there
- 23:03were the same business days because people take more PTO
- 23:06during December. They were.
- 23:08They're also down 75% year over year, so why would they be
- 23:15jacking up turn around times? There's two reasons.
- 23:19Go ahead. What are?
- 23:20Do you want me to go with those two or do you want to throw?
- 23:23You do it. Reason #1 SGC was making PSA
- 23:28look bad. Yeah.
- 23:30And when you are a company that owns 2 competing brands and one
- 23:36of them is doing really well at what we all say, the thing we
- 23:40want most is fast turn around time.
- 23:42So we don't want to be without our carts.
- 23:43That's more important than an extra 10 bucks is turn around
- 23:47times. And so the most important thing
- 23:50is turn around times. You got these two competing
- 23:52brands. One is the premium brand,
- 23:54according to them, one is the boutique brand.
- 23:58And the boutique brand is just absolutely taking you out to the
- 24:02woodshed and just beating the snot out of you.
- 24:05And you've got to, you've got to let off the accelerator and say
- 24:09slow them down. They're making us look bad.
- 24:12That's one reason. That's one reason #2 is because
- 24:18they harvested all of the graders from SGC, had them take
- 24:23off their black and white shirt, put on a red, white and blue
- 24:27shirt, work in the next office down the one with the padded
- 24:31seats instead of the ones with the hard plastic seats.
- 24:34Do you think those and now they don't have any graders are?
- 24:37Those people seen as traders in around the office.
- 24:42Well, when I was at the National, Tony Liebric and I
- 24:45went over to the STC booth and we were like, hey, so like are
- 24:50all of you guys just going over to PSA And the, the gal that we
- 24:55spoke to said, well, they came to everybody at STC and said, do
- 25:00you want to come over? And we said what percentage did
- 25:06And she said about 2/3. So two, 2/3 of your graders
- 25:12leave and now you've got 1/3 left.
- 25:17That capacity that we were just talking about, like the funnel,
- 25:21right? You got a funnel that you pour
- 25:22the gas in your gas can that the funnel just got way smaller and
- 25:27it's going to be a lot slower. So one, they lost other graders
- 25:31because they got harvested like a kidney.
- 25:34And then second, they had to slow them down because they were
- 25:39making them look bad. So when I was fresh out of
- 25:43college, I was working at a company called MBNA.
- 25:45I'm sorry if I've shared this story before, but I worked at a
- 25:48company called MBNA. Massive, massive company.
- 25:50They had like 30,000 employees at the time.
- 25:54They had a lot of satellite sites in Maine.
- 25:59I worked at one in Rockland, right on the ocean, beautiful
- 26:02spot. And the headquarters, the
- 26:04northeast headquarters was in Belfast.
- 26:06And Belfast was like really fancy.
- 26:09And the people there were snobby and nobody in Rockland liked
- 26:12those people. But I was an up and coming 23
- 26:16year old, 24 year old and I was a top performer and I got
- 26:20promoted and I was sent to the the Home Office in Belfast,
- 26:26Maine. And I was kind of persona non
- 26:29grata in Rockland. After that, I would go back and
- 26:32visit 'cause I still lived in Rockland and I'd pop in and
- 26:35they'd be like, oh, big shot Mike here to tell us how to do
- 26:39things. And that's how I feel the SGC
- 26:44people probably think about PSA people.
- 26:45Oh, 100% as a teacher, here's here's the the similar example.
- 26:51It's the teacher who you're in the trenches with for all these
- 26:54years. And then that teacher goes at
- 26:57night and gets their admin credential.
- 26:59And then all of a sudden they wear the fancier clothes and,
- 27:02you know, maybe a tie every once in a while.
- 27:04And they're they're a vice principal.
- 27:06And now they're going to come evaluate you because they know
- 27:09more than you. And they were just like, oh, OK,
- 27:11Darth, you know, that's how we feel.
- 27:16It's it's incredible. By the way, I was made AI was
- 27:21made promoted into manager at the age of 25.
- 27:24Congratulations. Yeah, this was a long time ago,
- 27:27but it's looking back on it. It's really weird that they made
- 27:32me a manager after such a short period of time.
- 27:34And I was managing my former peers because I was promoted to
- 27:37manager back in Rockland where I was persona non grata.
- 27:41And all these people were like, oh, he's going to be.
- 27:44And they, they liked me before I left.
- 27:47But now all of a sudden I'm Mr. Hotshot, Mr. Big, big time.
- 27:51Coming in and being like, I'm your manager now and I have to
- 27:54tell you how to do your job. It's a really awkward thing.
- 27:59Who promotes people to manager at 25 years old?
- 28:03I mean, I, I don't know. I I don't know.
- 28:08I mean that is certainly put you in a very difficult situation.
- 28:14It's like, it reminds me kind of like some of the the stuff that
- 28:18happened on the office, you know where it's.
- 28:20Like bouncing? From. 1.
- 28:23Yeah, yeah, he, he shows up and he's a temp and then the next
- 28:27thing you know, a few years later, he's.
- 28:30Like how's it going? My favorite location.
- 28:33Yeah, yeah. And, and by the way, he, I guess
- 28:36he directed a lot of it and wrote a lot of.
- 28:38It but he did OK. So let's go to that.
- 28:43The last little thing that we you started asking me about off
- 28:47air and I said, well, let's talk about on the show.
- 28:49Let's just let's just have this conversation in public.
- 28:53So go ahead and and and share with everybody the question and
- 28:57the premise. A couple of people that I
- 29:00respect greatly in the hobby and YouTube in general reach have
- 29:05reached out to me separately in the past week or two and both
- 29:08asked me independent of each other.
- 29:11I noticed that you're posting to YouTube like 5 days after you
- 29:15post to a podcast and I explained to them, well, why
- 29:18don't you explain why that that is currently and then and then
- 29:23I'll move on. OK.
- 29:25Well, for one, for one, I think that when we started, we both
- 29:32had a small YouTube presence, but we had zero podcast
- 29:37presence. Neither one of us was on
- 29:39Spotify. We weren't on Apple, We weren't
- 29:42on any of the places that you can listen to a podcast.
- 29:45And so I felt like it was important if we were going to
- 29:50have any sort of podcast presence, that what we should
- 29:53start with is, is drive people there and you could get it
- 29:59earlier if you go there. So I think there's a decent
- 30:02amount of people that are YouTube people that weren't
- 30:05podcast people. And they said, OK, well, I'll,
- 30:07I'll go over to Spotify and I'll check it out there.
- 30:10And they, they tried the podcast thing because they could get it
- 30:14sooner. So my thought process was, is
- 30:19this a podcast or is this a YouTube show?
- 30:24This, this surface issues. I think of it of it as a podcast
- 30:28because it's we're talking, we're not showing.
- 30:32And to me, YouTube is more of a visual platform, a visual medium
- 30:37than it is an audio pre medium. And so since we're talking,
- 30:42we're not doing a lot of visuals, I think of this as a
- 30:44podcast. So we should try to make a
- 30:47presence as a podcast and get that kind of ball rolling.
- 30:50That was my original thought. Yeah.
- 30:54And and both of them said, I get that.
- 30:58But they believe that the people who prefer podcasts are just
- 31:03going to go to podcast anyway, whether it's on YouTube at the
- 31:06same time. And the people who prefer
- 31:08YouTube, which is we get more views on YouTube, are just going
- 31:14to wait for it to hit YouTube and would prefer to not need to
- 31:17wait. And the negative of doing it,
- 31:22how we're doing it now is that things are less timely, like,
- 31:29like when this hits YouTube one week from today, this, this, you
- 31:35know, PSA raising prices thing is like very old news.
- 31:40Very. Old news, maybe we should test
- 31:42it and post it to both locations tomorrow morning.
- 31:47Friday morning or Saturday morning?
- 31:50Either way, Saturday, sure, whatever.
- 31:53Just see how it does do. You think there's any science to
- 31:58when videos are posted? Like what's?
- 32:00For sure. Yeah, there's 100%.
- 32:03There's definitely a science to it.
- 32:05Like my audience. If I post one of my videos at
- 32:08noon, part of it is when they're on YouTube, but also part of it
- 32:13is that I've trained my audience.
- 32:14But I'm going to post a video at 5:00 PM.
- 32:19We have done, I think 9:15 AM Eastern Time every Saturday for
- 32:25podcasts and Thursday on the video, right?
- 32:29Correct. And I post videos on Mondays and
- 32:34Wednesdays at 10:15 AM Eastern for my regular and then I almost
- 32:41always, not always, always, but almost always on Friday post
- 32:45when it's 7:15 Pacific, 10, 10:15 Eastern.
- 32:51And and there's definitely something to a routine.
- 32:55It's feel like, oh, it's this day.
- 32:56Like I know, like I know when I wake up Sunday morning, you're
- 33:00clearing the bases episode is going to already be live.
- 33:05And as I'm waking up and I'm getting ready and dressed, I
- 33:08usually will put that on and and hear about the stuff because
- 33:12you're very active in the Twitterverse.
- 33:14I'm very not active. So a lot of the stuff that
- 33:17you're hearing about, they're like, I'm not as news up to date
- 33:21on news as you as you are, because a lot of that is
- 33:24happening rapidly on Twitter, which I have no presence there.
- 33:28I mean, I think I have an account, I have a handle, but I
- 33:32don't know if I have messages there and people reached out to
- 33:34me. I'm apologize because I I'd
- 33:36never go on it. So I'm down.
- 33:42If you want to switch it up, I'm I'm completely cool switching it
- 33:46up. It's worth track.
- 33:48OK, so starting Saturday, so this would be is it Val?
- 33:53What day is Valentine's Day? It is.
- 33:56Yeah, it is. How do the?
- 33:58Kids do this Saturn Valentine's Day I I'm going to be away from.
- 34:04All trying to make hearts. There you go.
- 34:07I'm going to be away from all three of my Valentine's at a
- 34:11card show about 500 miles away from them.
- 34:18More than that. And so that's what kind of
- 34:21Valentine I am. All right.
- 34:23So I guess Saturday, we're going to go ahead and give this a
- 34:27shot. So if you were used to seeing
- 34:30this on Thursdays on YouTube, ain't happening at least.
- 34:35And and again, tell us down below in the comments, do you
- 34:37like this? Do you not like it?
- 34:39I have a feeling YouTube people would prefer that and.
- 34:43I well, the yeah, sorry, the proof will be in the pudding, as
- 34:48the kids say. I'm thinking kids ever said
- 34:49that. You know Sam.
- 34:51Cosby would say that. Oh.
- 34:53Geez, how many listens will we get?
- 34:58How many downloads in the podcast will we get versus
- 35:00YouTube? And did we skew it the other
- 35:04way? So yeah, we'll we'll find out.
- 35:07I think it's worth a try. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:12And I, I will say this, I about three months ago, I started
- 35:16posting my Midlife Q&A Wednesday episodes on Sundays.
- 35:23I post it and they do well on podcast.
- 35:25But I, I genuinely have noticed that my views on YouTube are a
- 35:30little lower because I think on podcast I, I shouldn't even be
- 35:36saying this out loud because I'm just kicking myself in the nuts.
- 35:39But on on YouTube, there are going to be commercials, but if
- 35:44you listen to it on Spotify or Apple Podcasts, you can listen
- 35:49to it without all those interruptions.
- 35:52And so I think a lot of people say I'd rather just wait four
- 35:54days and not have to have all these interruptions.
- 35:57But my advice is buy YouTube Premium.
- 35:59It's like the best $15.00 a month I spend.
- 36:03Yeah, I don't, I don't have YouTube Premium and and people
- 36:07would probably be. Surprised pay for it for you.
- 36:08I'll just send you $180 a year and then you could have it.
- 36:13Thank you. I think people will be surprised
- 36:15to learn that other than a very small sponsorship from Chris
- 36:20Dewell, we make gnome on this channel and we would like to,
- 36:24but we're not like we're not having meetings gone.
- 36:26We got to make money. We're we're trying to build
- 36:30something. So if people go and listen to
- 36:32this on a podcast, there is 0, literally 0 revenue from that,
- 36:37which we're OK with. We are OK with that and we do it
- 36:41because we like it. But it is a lot of work and I
- 36:44know that people want to be entertained for free, but there
- 36:50are expenses that go along with some of this stuff.
- 36:53It would be a nice if we could at least like, like I have to
- 36:56have the highest in my area. I have to have the highest
- 37:00Internet, whatever connection, like I, yeah, I have like fiber
- 37:05optic cable, like the high speed, highest high speed thing,
- 37:08so that when I do this, I don't freeze because I wouldn't want
- 37:11to be that guy, you know? And so I, I pay a lot more for
- 37:17Internet than I did before I did this.
- 37:19It would just be nice to have some of that stuff covered.
- 37:22I mean, we could do like a Patreon group, but then it's
- 37:25like then we're those guys to do a Patreon group, you know?
- 37:28So it's like, I don't know, all right, well, we'll give it a
- 37:31shot. And if you're out there
- 37:33listening and you're looking to, you know, sponsor a, a, a show
- 37:38on YouTube slash podcast, we'd love to hear from you.
- 37:43Absolutely. I did want to circle back to the
- 37:46weekend of Mike because this is very, very important weekend of
- 37:49Mike. You had mentioned I'll probably
- 37:51eat a lot of junk food and that is more true than you could
- 37:54possibly know. I, I stocked up because I don't
- 37:56have a vehicle. So I was like, well, we got to
- 37:57make sure I have enough junk food and I kind of hid it a
- 38:03little bit, but my wife still found it.
- 38:05And she's, she's like pulling it out of the bag and she, she just
- 38:12looks at me like she's just disgusted with me.
- 38:14And I laughed and she's just like.
- 38:17Can I guess what some of the things would?
- 38:20Because I see you as like a Red Vines guy.
- 38:22You don't like Red Vines? No.
- 38:25No, absolutely not. So are you a salty, crunchy like
- 38:29Doritos kind of guy? Or when you say junk food, we're
- 38:32not getting like Chips Ahoy or something, right?
- 38:35No, I, I, I like Chips Ahoy, but it's not something I would ever
- 38:38choose. If you have, if you haven't, I'm
- 38:40over at your house, hang out messing around with cards and
- 38:43you had some Chips Ahoy. I would 100% eat them.
- 38:47But I'm a chips and dip guy, and I went a little off the beaten
- 38:52track this time. I went with Tostitos and some
- 38:57salsa con queso, which I haven't done in many, many years.
- 39:02Normally it's like Ruffles and French onion tip, which I love.
- 39:08But I also got a a Ben and Jerry's impressively,
- 39:13impressively fudged, which is, yeah, so good.
- 39:16Never heard of that one. Yeah, and we got pizza from I
- 39:20got. I got pizza from Portland Pie
- 39:22tonight. Portland Pie is The Maine
- 39:24probably the best. I'm going to get some comments
- 39:27that people say or it's auto. Auto sucks.
- 39:31That's another pizza place. Portland pie is the best in
- 39:33Maine. It's just very expensive and I
- 39:35don't do it very often. Has Dave Portnoy rated this
- 39:41place? He has not done Portland pie.
- 39:43He has been to Maine. I think he rated the place like
- 39:47a nine nine out of 10 or 9. Does it rate them on a 10 point
- 39:51scale? I never.
- 39:52Yeah, but ten's not real. Like like a really good pizza is
- 39:56like 8.2. OK, there was a place, I don't
- 40:00remember the name of it, but it it got insanely popular after,
- 40:03which they do, and it was in Portland, but it wasn't Portland
- 40:07Pie. And by the way, when you rate a
- 40:11pizza, you never go with seven or eight or nine.
- 40:16You always have to do a point something because it's a rookie
- 40:19score. If you say, I'll give it a 7,
- 40:21like that's a rookie score that that shows, no, your palate
- 40:25isn't really that good. You're you're a very simple
- 40:27person. It would be like a a 7.3 would
- 40:31would show that you're actually a connoisseur.
- 40:36I am A7 kind of guy. I'm very like if you put.
- 40:43Near Mint to mint. Yeah, I don't know.
- 40:47I'm I'm a very simple guy, Greg. I guess I'd be near mint.
- 40:52Yeah, I'm a very simple guy and I like it that way.
- 40:56No. Yeah, simple's good.
- 40:57I mean, simple has pros and cons, All right.
- 41:01So this is a big episode. We've made a major shift in our
- 41:05posting strategy. We've talked about lemonade
- 41:09stands and the economics involved in them.
- 41:14We've you completely destroyed stream yard.
- 41:18I mean, I'm surprised that they haven't taken down our whole
- 41:20account at this point. I mean there was there was a lot
- 41:24that was accomplished. We do have a couple of ideas up
- 41:28our sleeve for the Sports Card Clubhouse network which you and
- 41:35I need to talk a little bit about, but more might be coming
- 41:38soon. And if you haven't yet gone to
- 41:41the Sports Card Clubhouse website and checked out the
- 41:45current poll, there is a pull up.
- 41:48So don't forget to check that out as long as well as the hot
- 41:51list as well as if you're hearing this right now, there's
- 41:54still time to go to the sports car clubhouse.
- 41:56Go to the midlife tab and upload your favorite pick up from the
- 42:01month of January. The deadline is coming up soon
- 42:04for that. So a lot going on at the at the
- 42:06clubhouse headquarters, at the clubhouse, clubhouse.
- 42:10Yeah, I just went and I voted for most famous sports card on
- 42:13sportscardclubhouse.com. And it's, there's some good
- 42:17choices, some that people will roll their eyes at, others that
- 42:21people will very much debate. So we'll yeah, there's maybe
- 42:25soon. There's a little New England
- 42:28bias in here, for sure. Well, I got 2 New Englanders in
- 42:32the group. I mean, what are we doing?
- 42:351987 tops. Ellis Burks is not in there.
- 42:38Next week when we talk, I'll have some great stories about
- 42:43the West Coast Card Show because there are some good folks that
- 42:49that I get to hang out with this weekend, so that's going to be
- 42:51fun. Nice.
- 42:53All right, bud, another one in the books was this.
- 42:56I think this was episode 2121 of Sports Card Clubhouse.
- 43:00Look at how far we've come. And you've done all of them.
- 43:04What do you mean no? I missed one.
- 43:08I missed the one with Keating. Keating was my replacement one
- 43:10week. Oh, that's right.
- 43:13That's right, Tony replaced you once and Jake replaced you once.
- 43:18Yeah. So but hey, we're still batting
- 43:21pretty good, so I'm down. All right, everybody again in
- 43:25the comments, seriously, let us know what do you think about
- 43:27this little shake up? Because this is this is a big
- 43:30deal for us. So let us know.
