- 0:00Speaker 1: Tong Riedo is a national park for a reason. It's
- 0:02Speaker 1: a stunning, beautiful part of this country and the fact
- 0:05Speaker 1: that's currently on fire is obviously worrying, not just because
- 0:09Speaker 1: it's a fire and you want filers to be put out,
- 0:11Speaker 1: but also because of where it's happening. It will pay
- 0:14Speaker 1: who Central North Island. I've been taking a hammering lately.
- 0:17Speaker 1: You'll know this. Mills factories, forestry, tourism has been affected.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We've had the alpine lifts debarcle. The mountain's kind of
- 0:27Speaker 1: been battling for a week while all this after COVID,
- 0:30Speaker 1: and now you potentially putting summer bookings at risk with
- 0:34Speaker 1: a decent chunk of the park now raging fire. Businesses
- 0:38Speaker 1: can only take so much before something breaks, as it
- 0:41Speaker 1: has for many since the heady days of free government
- 0:44Speaker 1: money during the pandemic. Today we're reporting one hundred and
- 0:47Speaker 1: fifteen percent increase in insolvent seasons twenty twenty two. The
- 0:50Speaker 1: problem is not just inflation eating into consumer spending and
- 0:54Speaker 1: confidence and all that stuff, but also the sequence of
- 0:57Speaker 1: the shocks. You know, it's kind of one thing after
- 1:00Speaker 1: another and then those on the edge get pushed off.
- 1:03Speaker 1: The economy generally has had inflation, recession, you know, weather events, tariffs,
- 1:10Speaker 1: all this stuff happening. And basically, what I think this
- 1:13Speaker 1: tells us is that shocks can come at any time,
- 1:16Speaker 1: any place, not necessarily with a nice six or seven
- 1:19Speaker 1: good years between them. What is next? Who knows? Is
- 1:23Speaker 1: it the AI bubble bursting as we've been hearing about
- 1:26Speaker 1: for the last couple of months. Is it another war,
- 1:29Speaker 1: is it an oil shock, is it another fire ripping
- 1:32Speaker 1: through a tourist hotspot. Take your pick. But the lesson
- 1:35Speaker 1: I think the message is don't expect that it won't
- 1:38Speaker 1: come soon, or that it won't come tomorrow. For more
