- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical Crossroads, the

- 0:13I'm your host, Will Walden. Today's episode is about Tesla,
- 0:17but not particularly Tesla, a milestone in EV technology.
- 0:22The charging technology has been met.
- 0:25It's completed and the North American Charging Standard
- 0:28certification has been granted. This new standard is poised to
- 0:32address numerous challenges in EV charging, and it promises a
- 0:35more efficient and accessible charging infrastructure.
- 0:38Initially, Tesla's introduction of the Max, the NACS, or the
- 0:43North American Charging Standard as a proprietary technology in
- 0:46November of 2022 was met with some skepticism.
- 0:50People thought that they were just trying to take over the
- 0:52industry. However, its dominance in the
- 0:55USEV market led to broader industry acceptance.
- 0:58Major automakers like Ford and General Motors soon adopted the
- 1:02NAX plug, signalling a shift towards standardization.
- 1:06Now SA, as decision to develop an independent standard around
- 1:09Tesla's NAX represents a very important move.
- 1:12It ensures that a single company does not control a crucial
- 1:16aspect of the EV infrastructure, which is vital for the
- 1:20widespread adoption of electric vehicles.
- 1:22Rodney McKee, PhD, from the University of Delaware and chair
- 1:26of SA ES NAX Task Force shared insights on the potential of
- 1:30NAX. He highlighted his role in
- 1:32making EV charging installations more affordable for businesses,
- 1:36enhancing interoperability, and opening new avenues for street
- 1:40charging. Kind of like, remember parking?
- 1:43You know, parking meters? What if instead of parking
- 1:45meters you had a charger? Or next to a parking meter you
- 1:48had a charger? That's what they're looking into
- 1:50in the NAX standard. Support for 277 volts, distinct
- 1:54from the two O 8 to 240 voltage range of the J1772 standard, is
- 1:59a key factor in its potential impact.
- 2:02This compatibility with commercial utility connection
- 2:05simplifies and reduces the cost of charger installations.
- 2:09Cheaper and easier installation processes for businesses will
- 2:13likely lead to a proliferation of EV chargers in workplaces and
- 2:17public spaces. Now.
- 2:18This will benefit EV users who lack home charging options and
- 2:22contribute to a more robust charging network.
- 2:24Some people have to trickle charge overnight because all
- 2:27they have is a small charger in their house, and apartment
- 2:31buildings in particular stand to gain from The NAC standard
- 2:34allows for easier installation of charging stations without the
- 2:37need for extensive transformer infrastructure, making EV
- 2:41ownership more feasible for their residents.
- 2:43Transformer infrastructure costs money, and sometimes apartment
- 2:46buildings don't want to help out with that cost.
- 2:50Now, the next Standard also introduces innovations for
- 2:52street parking solutions in urban areas.
- 2:55Unlike the D1772 standard, NAX uses a standardized receptacle
- 3:00compatible with a portable charging cable, reducing
- 3:02maintenance issues and improving public charging infrastructure.
- 3:06And NAX design allows for both AC and DC charging through the
- 3:11same connector, enhancing versatility and convenience.
- 3:15Now this feature contrasts with AJ1772 and CCS connectors, which
- 3:19require different connectors for AC and DC charging.
- 3:24Now, heavy and medium duty vehicles benefit from the NAX
- 3:28standard as well. They can charge at higher
- 3:30capacities, up to 52 kilowatts using the same receptacles as
- 3:34light duty vehicles, boosting charging efficiency for a huge
- 3:39range of vehicles. Now, the integration of NAX is
- 3:42expected to facilitate the widespread adoption of Vehicle
- 3:45to grid technology or V2G. And by making AC charging
- 3:49infrastructure more affordable and encouraging more consistent
- 3:53EV charging behavior, NAX paves the way for a more resilient and
- 3:57responsive energy grid. However, the widespread
- 4:00implementation of NAX faces potential regulatory challenges.
- 4:04U.S. Federal and state investments in
- 4:06charging infrastructure have primarily focused on CCS
- 4:09compatible chargers. The transition to NAX might
- 4:13necessitate changes in policy to avoid leaving existing CCS and
- 4:18also J1772 chargers and vehicles unsupported now.
- 4:23The development of NAX was ironically spurred by the
- 4:26federal government's NEVI program, the NEVI, which aimed
- 4:29to create a more inclusive charging network.
- 4:32Tesla's adaptation of its proprietary connector into a
- 4:35standard format was initially response to this program,
- 4:38leading to the current industry wide shift toward NAX.
- 4:41The impact of these new standards extends beyond more
- 4:45technical advancements. SA, ES, J3O68 and J 3400
- 4:50standards, which include the next promises to make EV
- 4:54charging more accessible and cost effective, and even allow E
- 4:57VS to function as power sources during grid shortages or for
- 5:01earning income through V2G services.
- 5:05Imagine if you're home, the grid goes down and you need to keep
- 5:09the air conditioning on because it's extremely hot outside.
- 5:13The way you can do that is plug your car into your house.
- 5:15You can charge certain parts of your house, maybe your home
- 5:18battery or something like that, with your car, and you'll be
- 5:22good to go with this new standard.
- 5:24Now, also with the approval of SAEJ 3400, the Tesla Connector
- 5:29system is set to become a standardized feature on future E
- 5:33VS. This will break Tesla's
- 5:35exclusive hold on its charging network.
- 5:38And this opens up a vast network of Tesla charters which are
- 5:41already in place and which Tesla plans on building out for use by
- 5:46a wider range of electric vehicles.
- 5:48And the goal of Tesla in the beginning, Of course, it's a
- 5:51business, We all know it's a business and they want to make
- 5:54money. But the goal was to shift away
- 5:57from ICE vehicles, from gas vehicles.
- 6:00They wanted to get on the electric standard And now
- 6:04because of this, it's a huge step forward for that.
- 6:08Now. The implementation of these
- 6:10standards is a critical shift in the EV industry.
- 6:13It simplifies the charging experience and it's going to be
- 6:16more sustainable and versatile for every electric vehicle in
- 6:20the future. You're not going to have to
- 6:21carry around a bunch of different charging adapters if
- 6:24you're going to be travelling across countries or states.
- 6:28Now, as the standards roll out though, EV drivers can expect
- 6:31more accessible charging options, potentially
- 6:34transforming the landscape of electric vehicle mobility in the
