- 0:00Speaker 1: He was in the studio with me right now as
- 0:01Speaker 1: the Humpty Dumpty Foundation Founder and Chairman, Paul Francis, Good
- 0:05Speaker 1: morning to and also well many of you will recognize
- 0:09Speaker 1: his dulcet tones. Ray Martin, good morning to you.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Nice again. Lovely to have you both in the studio.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Now, we know that the Humpty Dumpty Foundation does an
- 0:18Speaker 1: incredible job, and there is so much that happens here
- 0:21Speaker 1: in the Northern Territory that a lot of the time
- 0:23Speaker 1: people probably aren't even aware of when it comes to
- 0:26Speaker 1: some of the donations and some of the work that
- 0:28Speaker 1: the foundation has underway. Now, firstly, I understand that you
- 0:33Speaker 1: both just come back from Catherine.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Quite a bit happening in Catherine.
- 0:38Speaker 3: What a great place.
- 0:39Speaker 4: I spent a lot of time out in Allison, also
- 0:41Speaker 4: west of Alice in the Hearts Bluff and Papuan. You're
- 0:43Speaker 4: out there taking photographs and so on. But let Paul
- 0:46Speaker 4: tell you the story of this remarkable book. We met
- 0:48Speaker 4: in Catherine.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Who did you meet, Paul.
- 0:51Speaker 3: We met with Bob. Yeah, and that's just so good
- 0:55Speaker 3: for the heart and the soul. I mean, Bob's eighty
- 0:57Speaker 3: two years of age. He rang up, he rang me
- 1:00Speaker 3: up about four months ago, and he said, Paul, I've
- 1:04Speaker 3: supported Humpty a little bit in the past, and he said,
- 1:08Speaker 3: but I want to do something more substantial. And he said,
- 1:12Speaker 3: I want it all for Catherine because that's where I've
- 1:14Speaker 3: made my money. And Bob's a road train driver, still
- 1:18Speaker 3: driving at eighty two years of age. And I said,
- 1:22Speaker 3: that's great, Bob. He said, I love Humpty because I
- 1:25Speaker 3: know where my money goes. And I want to buy
- 1:27Speaker 3: more equipment for Catherine Hospital. And I said that's great, Bob,
- 1:30Speaker 3: but I know they need it. What sort of figure
- 1:34Speaker 3: we talking about? And he said to me, and bucks
- 1:38Speaker 3: is incredible. You unbelievable. I said, Bob, that's so so generous.
- 1:45Speaker 3: It will make such a difference. He said, Paul, I
- 1:49Speaker 3: don't want to be the richest man in the cemetery.
- 1:53Speaker 2: What an absolute legend. And he's still driving road trains
- 1:57Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I think you can only do that in the
- 1:59Speaker 4: territory place. You've got to quit ring sixty five. We
- 2:02Speaker 4: filled him yesterday just for a little of film.
- 2:04Speaker 2: They let you do it long here in the territory, right.
- 2:07Speaker 4: But he's a great driver. He bounced up into the
- 2:09Speaker 4: cabin of the truck. They're like, he's about twenty five
- 2:11Speaker 4: and drove it around for our camera, just around the lot.
- 2:14Speaker 2: But he does.
- 2:15Speaker 4: He does Catherine to Darwin and back, which is about
- 2:19Speaker 4: six hundred and fifty k's. He does that four and
- 2:21Speaker 4: five times a week and bring out bringing a concrete
- 2:24Speaker 4: and other stuff up here. And he still does it.
- 2:26Speaker 4: And again you would say, he drives like a twenty
- 2:29Speaker 4: five year old.
- 2:29Speaker 2: And did he let you have a horn around?
- 2:31Speaker 4: He said he would, I said no, thanks very much.
- 2:34Speaker 2: In city would.
- 2:37Speaker 4: There's a big rig it's a it's a big Volvo
- 2:40Speaker 4: truck and it's got three rigs behind, so it's about
- 2:43Speaker 4: twice the length of a cricket pitch down the highway.
- 2:45Speaker 4: And there's this eighty two year old driving Legion which
- 2:48Speaker 4: is a magic man.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Sounds like a territory legend.
- 2:50Speaker 1: He sounds like he could be our territory and of
- 2:52Speaker 1: the week just about after that donation.
- 2:55Speaker 2: He should be. He should be.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Yeah, but he's also we filled. We took let me
- 3:00Speaker 4: the hospital yesterday and the nursing staff there, who are
- 3:03Speaker 4: like in Darwin are the best in the world. I mean,
- 3:05Speaker 4: if there is if the equipment that they have to
- 3:08Speaker 4: work with is as good as AI would be unstoppable here.
- 3:11Speaker 4: So that's what we're trying to do is by the equipment.
- 3:12Speaker 4: But they are wonderful. And then the head of nursing
- 3:15Speaker 4: down there, a woman named Moira, was taking as round
- 3:17Speaker 4: and telling us about the They have about two hundred births
- 3:19Speaker 4: a year there. They send about two hundred complicated cases
- 3:22Speaker 4: up to Darwin, so they're pretty busy in that little hospital.
- 3:26Speaker 4: But they in the wireless dreams didn't think a million
- 3:29Speaker 4: dollars was suddenly raft to buy equipment that they have
- 3:31Speaker 4: to beg, borrow and steal for from, you know, from
- 3:34Speaker 4: the government in Darwin to get. And now Bob's made
- 3:37Speaker 4: it possible. So they're doing things now with their not
- 3:41Speaker 4: with their arms tied behind the back, that can actually
- 3:43Speaker 4: do things for which they're skilled.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Makes a big difference.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So what kind of equipment you know, are you able
- 3:48Speaker 1: to purchase for a place like the Catherine Hospital as
- 3:50Speaker 1: a result of.
- 3:51Speaker 2: A donation like that. I mean, it's absolutely incredible.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Everything from something called easy io, which is like a
- 3:57Speaker 4: drill used with toddlers where you can't find the vein,
- 4:00Speaker 4: whether the medicos can't find the vein and nurses can
- 4:02Speaker 4: use as well as doctors, and that's a lifesaver. And
- 4:04Speaker 4: yet they cost about fifteen hundred dollars and hospital after
- 4:08Speaker 4: and like every clinic in the territory we in now
- 4:10Speaker 4: supply equipment to about sixty five clinics. We've bought equipment
- 4:14Speaker 4: and will do the lot over the six and a
- 4:16Speaker 4: half million dollars we've put in a northern territory in
- 4:17Speaker 4: the last couple of years. But so from that to
- 4:21Speaker 4: something like the there's a transport cot that Paul helped
- 4:24Speaker 4: organize with a woman, a wonderful woman named doctor Luise Woodwood,
- 4:27Speaker 4: wh's a pediatrician here, who tried twelve years to get
- 4:30Speaker 4: this cot, which is about three hundred thousand dollars worth,
- 4:32Speaker 4: and governments of both persuasions, all persuasions hadn't been able
- 4:36Speaker 4: to find the money. And so she told us over
- 4:39Speaker 4: an eater of view and then at the ball that
- 4:41Speaker 4: she needed it, and Paul organized them the three hundred
- 4:43Speaker 4: thousand dollars. That's about three years ago. She can actually
- 4:47Speaker 4: tick the box to show at least fifty five babies
- 4:51Speaker 4: lives have been saved because of that cot. Fifty, not five,
- 4:56Speaker 4: not fifteen, fifty five babies, White, Black and Brindle have
- 5:00Speaker 4: been saved being able to fly to Melbourne or to
- 5:03Speaker 4: Adelaide for special treatment because Humpty bought.
- 5:08Speaker 1: It's incredible stuff and that equipment is absolutely pivotal. I mean,
- 5:12Speaker 1: anybody that's that's gone through a situation where they have
- 5:15Speaker 1: had a child, has maybe not been well when they're born,
- 5:20Speaker 1: it is just like it makes such a massive difference.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It's life changing, it's life saving. You give your right arm,
- 5:27Speaker 2: oh you absolutely anything, you do anything.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Absolutely, it's life and the life are and this machine,
- 5:34Speaker 3: as Ray said, medical teams, the teams that we met
- 5:37Speaker 3: yesterday and Catherine everywhere we go in the end too.
- 5:40Speaker 3: They're the most beautiful, passionate, skilled people and they just
- 5:45Speaker 3: don't have the equipment and Bob's situation, you know, going
- 5:48Speaker 3: through it. Even a little simulator yesterday so they can
- 5:51Speaker 3: train on little Premie babies and and watching that and
- 5:56Speaker 3: watching this simulator, and people don't understand how that is
- 6:01Speaker 3: to train for that situation.
- 6:02Speaker 4: The other thing KD two is that you know, we
- 6:04Speaker 4: tend to because we're ozsi's, we tend to bash up
- 6:08Speaker 4: governments and say, well, you know, why do I have
- 6:10Speaker 4: to give money? Why doesn't the bloody government do it
- 6:12Speaker 4: and then we pay taxpayers money. The Health Bill in
- 6:15Speaker 4: the territory and the Health build in Australia is the
- 6:17Speaker 4: biggest bill. It's biggeran the Defense Bill or second sorry,
- 6:20Speaker 4: second of the Dearise Bill now with submarines. But in
- 6:23Speaker 4: New South Wales alone, I'm not sure the territory figure,
- 6:25Speaker 4: it's several. It's twenty three billion dollars a year. In
- 6:29Speaker 4: New South Wales. Governments of no matter what persuasion, forget politics,
- 6:34Speaker 4: they can't afford anymore. That's they're absolutely broke when it
- 6:37Speaker 4: comes to health. So we as taxpayers and the citizens,
- 6:40Speaker 4: if we don't actually get generous and do which is
- 6:42Speaker 4: what people what's Bob's doing. If we don't do that,
- 6:45Speaker 4: well then we just can't buy these things. And it's
- 6:46Speaker 4: not because governments are slack, it's because they just don't
- 6:49Speaker 4: have any more money.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Now, tell me what do we need this year? What
- 6:52Speaker 1: are you trying to raise funds for for this year?
- 6:54Speaker 1: We know the Gala ball is coming up next month
- 6:57Speaker 1: as I understand it, So what do you want to
- 6:59Speaker 1: raise money for? What's on the list?
- 7:02Speaker 2: Everything?
- 7:02Speaker 3: Look, you know we're now supporting over sixty hospitals and
- 7:07Speaker 3: health services across the end that we've actually already given
- 7:10Speaker 3: some equipment to and we've just got to keep it happening.
- 7:12Speaker 3: So Darwin Hospitals after a central monitoring system. It's one
- 7:16Speaker 3: hundred and forty thousand dollars, but so much of the equipment.
- 7:20Speaker 3: When Ray and I first came up here five years ago,
- 7:22Speaker 3: they were using equipment to say premature babies that was
- 7:27Speaker 3: thirty five years old. And that's just got to change you.
- 7:33Speaker 4: I'm sure you say it, and your family and your
- 7:34Speaker 4: friends say it as well as you know, we're at
- 7:36Speaker 4: the end of the line in Darwin that Canber runs it.
- 7:39Speaker 4: And if Camber doesn't, if we don't know rattle a
- 7:41Speaker 4: begging cup enough, we never get it. And that's true.
- 7:44Speaker 4: And so the end result is that, you know, as
- 7:46Speaker 4: with those fifty five babies that I talked about who
- 7:48Speaker 4: have been saved be course of doctor Hoodward's efforts and
- 7:51Speaker 4: humpty back it up, is that you know, we say
- 7:53Speaker 4: fifty five babies quickly, and it sounds like a lot
- 7:56Speaker 4: until you stop and say, well, that's that's fifty five
- 7:59Speaker 4: times one baby. And as you said a moment ago,
- 8:02Speaker 4: we all know the loss of a baby can destroy
- 8:04Speaker 4: a family, they can destroy a community in this and
- 8:08Speaker 4: to save one baby's life is makes it all worth
- 8:10Speaker 4: while to do it fifty five and that's just one
- 8:12Speaker 4: piece of equipment. So to answer your question in long
- 8:15Speaker 4: way is there's endless things we can buy from fifteen
- 8:18Speaker 4: hundred dollars up to one hundred and twenty thousand dollars
- 8:20Speaker 4: Paul spoke of. So anything we all, we do, everything
- 8:24Speaker 4: we raise with humpty dumpty stays in the territory. I know,
- 8:29Speaker 4: you know very very good charities who raise money here
- 8:31Speaker 4: and it goes to Melbourne or Sydney in a pool
- 8:33Speaker 4: and then it's distributed around Australia. Every cent we get
- 8:36Speaker 4: stays in the territory. We have no overhead costs. We
- 8:39Speaker 4: cover the administration costs in Sydney. And so when Paul
- 8:42Speaker 4: and the team come up here, we someone buyers, say
- 8:45Speaker 4: six five hundred dollars for a piece of machinery. You
- 8:48Speaker 4: know for Catherine Hospital, it's not one thousand dollars. On
- 8:51Speaker 4: top of that administration, whatever you pay, that's what you
- 8:54Speaker 4: get and you get your name on that if need be.
- 8:56Speaker 4: And the thing is that it's just saved, so saves
- 8:58Speaker 4: baby's life, So you know, answer your question. But it's
- 9:01Speaker 4: anything in between that e CO and an ambulance.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yeah, which is which is fantastic.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Now, I know that a lot of people listening this
- 9:08Speaker 1: morning are going to be thinking, oh, I wouldn't mind
- 9:09Speaker 1: going along to the to the gala event or finding
- 9:12Speaker 1: out a little bit more. Where can they go to
- 9:14Speaker 1: for a bit more information? And are there's still tickets available?
- 9:17Speaker 3: Yes? Look, yeah, we've only just actually started putting the
- 9:20Speaker 3: tickets out there. So yeah, it's on the twenty Saturday,
- 9:23Speaker 3: the twenty fifth, the March. Yeah, sorry, that March March.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And again that Mendel Casino and Resort who have been
- 9:34Speaker 3: unbelievable supporters and they underwrite the event for us so
- 9:38Speaker 3: they can call Humpty. They go to the Humpty website.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Just best wine, best meal, best music. Absolutely, I promise
- 9:46Speaker 4: you know. But why would you want to spend money
- 9:48Speaker 4: and go to a boring charity JOm, We make sure
- 9:50Speaker 4: it's not.
- 9:50Speaker 2: A good one.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Guarantee French wine, great Australian wines. It's a very special night.
- 9:59Speaker 3: But the most important thing is it'll make a difference
- 10:01Speaker 3: to the health of kids.
- 10:03Speaker 1: In the end to Is there somewhere can people find
- 10:06Speaker 1: find the website if they're after a little bit more detail.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I'm sure they can, can't they?
- 10:10Speaker 3: Oh yeah? And if they just got to know Humpty
- 10:12Speaker 3: and Humpty, yeah, give us give us a ring. I'm
- 10:18Speaker 3: happy to talk to anybody. If they ring up and
- 10:20Speaker 3: leave a message at Humpty, I'll get back to them.
- 10:22Speaker 3: We've just got to get everybody rallied and just keep
- 10:26Speaker 3: making a difference.
- 10:27Speaker 1: And if there is anybody out there listening who is
- 10:29Speaker 1: keen to getting contact and make a donation as well,
- 10:32Speaker 1: feel free to contact us here at the station.
- 10:33Speaker 2: We can get them in contact with you.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Paul.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Lovely to speak to you both this morning.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Thanks Katie and miss has been part of when we
- 10:40Speaker 4: first came here, we walked in these studios and talked
- 10:43Speaker 4: to mixed people, and mix have been one of our
- 10:44Speaker 4: part of our really biggest partner since we've been there.
- 10:47Speaker 4: So we thank you and thank the Mixed Listings for
- 10:49Speaker 4: coming on and doing it. So it's very much a.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Partnership, absolutely, and I think it's so important. You know,
- 10:53Speaker 1: we are talking about babies in the Northern Territory. I
- 10:56Speaker 1: know I have both of my babies up there at
- 10:58Speaker 1: the Royal Dalen Hospital, and you've got to make sure
- 11:00Speaker 1: that the staff there have the equipment that's required, particularly
- 11:04Speaker 1: if you do have a child prematurely or that has
- 11:07Speaker 1: issues that you need that very specialist equipment for.
- 11:11Speaker 2: So I thank you both so very much for your
- 11:13Speaker 2: time this morning.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Lovely to chat with you, Ray Martin and Paul Francis
- 11:17Speaker 1: there of course from the Humpty Dumpty Foundation
