Latest / SEC Football Addiction / Oklahoma STUNNED In Game That PROVES Something Unexpected!

- 0:00Speaker 1: Oklahoma was 1-0. Michigan was 1-0.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Only one of those records meant anything walking into Saturday.
- 0:08Speaker 2: The Sooners had just hung 51 on UTEP without breaking
- 0:12Speaker 2: a sweat. Michigan needed a Hail Mary on the final
- 0:15Speaker 2: play to get past Western Michigan by a point, and
- 0:18Speaker 2: they need a controversial clock review to even keep that
- 0:21Speaker 2: Hail Mary alive. On paper, this wasn't supposed to be close, guys.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Vegas favored Oklahoma by five and a half. On the road,
- 0:30Speaker 2: the 11th ranked team in the country heading to Ann
- 0:33Speaker 2: Arbor into the biggest stadium in college football against the
- 0:36Speaker 2: Wolverines in a second game under a brand new era
- 0:39Speaker 2: under Kyle Whittingham, still trying to figure out Bryce Underwood
- 0:43Speaker 2: and who the heck he is actually at this level.
- 0:46Speaker 1: This was not supposed to be the result that we expected.
- 0:50Speaker 2: This is SEC Football Addiction presented by PrizePix, where all
- 0:53Speaker 2: new users who play a $ 5 lineup and win tickets

- 1:01Speaker 1: I picked Oklahoma this week. I picked them comfortably.
- 1:04Speaker 2: This was supposed to be the week that Oklahoma announced itself. Instead,
- 1:08Speaker 2: it left Ann Arbor with a loss. Brent Venables had
- 1:12Speaker 2: already been sounding the alarm all week. After the UTEP blowout,
- 1:15Speaker 2: he wasn't in celebration mode. He came right out and
- 1:19Speaker 2: said it. He said, we've got to be a hell
- 1:20Speaker 2: of a lot better. Even OU's own radio voice, Toby Rowland,
- 1:24Speaker 2: spent the week warning that protecting the football would be
- 1:28Speaker 2: the whole ballgame, that a turnover would hand Michigan exactly
- 1:32Speaker 2: the kind of short field that it could not generate
- 1:34Speaker 2: on its own. And unfortunately for the Sooners, you guys
- 1:39Speaker 2: watching this, he was exactly right.
- 1:41Speaker 1: That's the part that stings.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Final score, Michigan 17, Oklahoma 10.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Not a shootout, not a blowout. It was exactly what
- 1:49Speaker 1: you expected in a game like this.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It was a slow, grinded-out, first-ever meeting at the big
- 1:56Speaker 2: house between these two teams, and Oklahoma had the chances
- 1:59Speaker 2: there to win, but they gave it away. That first-ever
- 2:02Speaker 2: part matters, too. This is the third time the two
- 2:04Speaker 2: teams have played, and this is the first time Michigan's
- 2:06Speaker 2: ever won. Last year, Oklahoma beat Michigan 24-13 in September
- 2:11Speaker 2: back in Norman. That game, the Sooners survived the mistakes
- 2:15Speaker 2: that they made. They walked away with the win because
- 2:18Speaker 2: their defense bailed them out. I don't know if that
- 2:21Speaker 2: sounds familiar, but it's the same exact script that played
- 2:24Speaker 2: out on Saturday. The only difference is it was Michigan's
- 2:26Speaker 2: defense that cashed in on those sloppy mistakes that Oklahoma
- 2:30Speaker 2: got away with a year ago. The margin for error
- 2:33Speaker 2: on the road in a building that loud against a
- 2:35Speaker 2: team that is desperate to erase a shaky week one
- 2:38Speaker 2: was always going to be really thin. And unfortunately for
- 2:41Speaker 2: the Sooners, they found that out the hard way. Three
- 2:44Speaker 2: quick takeaways and we'll get out of here. I know
- 2:46Speaker 2: you guys aren't in a good mood. Appreciate you watching.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Hopefully you are subscribed to SEC football addiction. The defense
- 2:52Speaker 2: in this game did exactly what it was built to do.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I want to give credit where it's earned. I know
- 2:55Speaker 2: you're not in for silver linings, but the defense carried
- 2:59Speaker 2: Saturday almost by itself. Bryce Underwood finished nine of 17
- 3:02Speaker 2: through the air for barely over a hundred yards. And
- 3:05Speaker 2: for long stretches, he looked exactly like what we all thought.
- 3:09Speaker 2: He was getting hit in the mouth over and over
- 3:11Speaker 2: again by a tough defense. Maybe the toughest he'll see
- 3:14Speaker 2: all year. He did have some nice carries. He did
- 3:17Speaker 2: some good things with his legs. Obviously, the touchdown play.
- 3:21Speaker 2: That was the only time, really, that Oklahoma's defense was
- 3:26Speaker 2: shaky at all. And you knew Bryce would get a
- 3:28Speaker 2: couple of things on the ground. I don't think anybody's
- 3:30Speaker 2: blaming them for this. But everything else the Michigan Wolverines
- 3:35Speaker 2: scored was a gift. Unfortunately for the Sooners, I thought
- 3:38Speaker 2: Michigan was a better team in all three phases of
- 3:40Speaker 2: the game. Michigan's punt team was better today. Twice, they
- 3:45Speaker 2: pinned Oklahoma deep inside their own territory. And Oklahoma's defense
- 3:51Speaker 2: held up oftentimes, forced a field goal on a short field,
- 3:55Speaker 2: only really gave up that one touchdown that I blame
- 3:58Speaker 2: the defense for. If you can blame somebody for giving
- 4:00Speaker 2: up one score, the Sooners did enough defensively. They tied
- 4:05Speaker 2: the game at 10 in the fourth quarter. The defense
- 4:09Speaker 2: at that point had done their job. They had erased
- 4:12Speaker 2: a 10-point deficit through sheer will. And you knew it
- 4:16Speaker 2: wasn't a great day from the offense against a good
- 4:17Speaker 2: Michigan defense, but you had a chance. The defense, left
- 4:21Speaker 2: to its own devices, played a good enough game to
- 4:24Speaker 2: win on Saturday, in my opinion. And it wasn't just bend,
- 4:27Speaker 2: don't break either. Early in the game, you guys had
- 4:31Speaker 2: Underwood bottled up. You hit him hard. He even got
- 4:36Speaker 2: a targeting flag before that call got sorted out. It
- 4:39Speaker 2: was a preview of how physical you guys were playing.
- 4:42Speaker 2: It was not a unit at all that got steamrolled.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It was a defense playing downhill, playing angry, and well
- 4:47Speaker 2: enough that it should have been the story of the
- 4:49Speaker 2: day and a win, which is exactly what makes the
- 4:52Speaker 2: next part so freaking frustrating if you're a Sooner fan.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I'll get right to that, but just really quickly, I
- 4:58Speaker 2: know you don't want to hear any ads on a
- 4:59Speaker 2: video like this, so I'll just tell you, make sure
- 5:01Speaker 2: you are subscribed. Make sure you're subscribed to our audio
- 5:03Speaker 2: feeds as well. Oklahoma season is not done. We'll continue
- 5:06Speaker 2: to talk about them, but make sure that you are subscribed.
- 5:09Speaker 2: We would appreciate it a ton. Now, let's talk about
- 5:12Speaker 2: takeaway number two. At the end of the day, John
- 5:15Speaker 2: Mateer wasn't good enough when the game demanded it. I've
- 5:18Speaker 2: been singing this kid's praises for two years now, and
- 5:22Speaker 2: he looks the part at times against overmatched competition.
- 5:26Speaker 1: He's tough. He extends plays. He makes plays with his legs.
- 5:29Speaker 2: He finished with 19 carries of his own on Saturday,
- 5:32Speaker 2: but there's a difference with a quarterback who plays well
- 5:36Speaker 2: when there's not a lot on the line and a
- 5:38Speaker 2: quarterback who can get you a win when the game
- 5:42Speaker 2: is tied in the fourth quarter.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I believe he had 13 carries. Let me correct that
- 5:45Speaker 1: just for a moment.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Saturday was the first real test that Oklahoma will get
- 5:52Speaker 2: this year, and it got an answer. Unfortunately, it wasn't
- 5:55Speaker 2: the one they wanted. With the defense balling out of
- 5:58Speaker 2: their minds and holding Michigan to just 10, the offense
- 6:01Speaker 2: coming back, Oklahoma's got the ball with the game tied
- 6:05Speaker 2: and a chance to either take the field and flip
- 6:08Speaker 2: it or maybe even take the lead. Instead, Mateer threw
- 6:13Speaker 2: a pass that had no business going where it went.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Jair Hill read the whole thing. You could see it
- 6:19Speaker 2: from the moment it left his hands. You saw the
- 6:21Speaker 2: defender starting to close, and you just thought, please no.
- 6:25Speaker 2: He took it back to Oklahoma's own six-yard line, and
- 6:29Speaker 2: two plays later, Jordan Marshall was in the end zone.
- 6:31Speaker 2: It was 17-10, and yeah, the game wasn't over then,
- 6:34Speaker 2: but I think we all kind of knew what was
- 6:36Speaker 2: about to happen. Not enough time left for an offense
- 6:39Speaker 2: that couldn't get much going today. Oklahoma did have time
- 6:42Speaker 2: to answer, but they never did. The interception wasn't a
- 6:45Speaker 2: tipped pass. It didn't look like a miscommunication on a
- 6:48Speaker 2: route to me. Maybe Brett will come out and say
- 6:51Speaker 2: that it was. Brent Venables will say, hey, man, we
- 6:54Speaker 2: had a little bit of a mix-up. It just looked
- 6:55Speaker 2: like a veteran quarterback in the exact moment his team
- 6:58Speaker 2: needed him to protect the ball, making the worst possible
- 7:01Speaker 2: read of the day. And it wasn't even the only giveaway.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Oklahoma lost a fumble on a screen earlier in the game.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Michigan's short field was set up. Two turnovers, zero for Michigan.
- 7:14Speaker 2: That was the difference. Give the Big Ten defense of
- 7:19Speaker 2: Michigan free possessions in a game that finishes seven points apart,
- 7:23Speaker 2: and this is what's going to happen. Now, the box
- 7:26Speaker 2: score is going to say that Matera threw for close
- 7:28Speaker 2: to 200 yards and ran for another 45 yards. But
- 7:32Speaker 2: it won't tell you that when Oklahoma needed one single
- 7:35Speaker 2: possession to have an answer, the guy with the ball
- 7:38Speaker 2: in his hands gave it right back to the other sideline.
- 7:41Speaker 2: And crunch time is when you find out what a
- 7:43Speaker 2: player truly is all about. Saturday, Oklahoma get a partial
- 7:47Speaker 2: answer that I don't think that they would have wanted
- 7:50Speaker 2: to get. Roland called it again in the preview. Unfortunately,
- 7:53Speaker 2: Mateer lived it out on the field. Takeaway three, this
- 7:57Speaker 2: offense never found a rhythm. And I think it cost
- 7:59Speaker 2: them big time in this game. I know you can't
- 8:03Speaker 2: take them away fully, but you had two really nice drives.
- 8:07Speaker 2: And outside of that, it just was not good enough.
- 8:10Speaker 2: And Michigan's defense is really good. But Oklahoma today was
- 8:14Speaker 2: just a unit that could not consistently move the ball
- 8:17Speaker 2: against them. They entered Saturday after last week's game without
- 8:22Speaker 2: a proven pass rush. A defense that by its own
- 8:26Speaker 2: broadcaster's admission during the week was Michigan's biggest question mark
- 8:31Speaker 2: heading into the game. Oklahoma had the ball late with
- 8:35Speaker 2: a chance to answer after Michigan went up by seven
- 8:37Speaker 2: and they couldn't really get anything done there. It was
- 8:40Speaker 2: still a very winnable football game at that point. Oklahoma's
- 8:44Speaker 2: final possessions came up empty though. Michigan was able to
- 8:47Speaker 2: run out the clock before finally punting with just over
- 8:50Speaker 2: a minute left and Oklahoma couldn't do anything with that either.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Sacked on the last play of the game and unfortunately
- 8:58Speaker 2: on the wrong side of the scoreboard. I don't think
- 9:01Speaker 2: this is a talent problem for Oklahoma. I don't think
- 9:03Speaker 2: anybody's questioning the playmakers on this roster. I think it's
- 9:06Speaker 2: an execution problem. In the moments where the margin for
- 9:10Speaker 2: error is zero, Michigan's own defense had just watched this
- 9:14Speaker 2: offense sputter through most of the second half, too.
- 9:17Speaker 1: This was there to be taken.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Oklahoma's offense had one job on Saturday. Don't hand the
- 9:25Speaker 2: defense's effort back to Michigan for free. And it failed
- 9:29Speaker 2: at that job twice. In two moments, they decided the
- 9:32Speaker 2: final score. Think about how this week actually started. Oklahoma's
- 9:37Speaker 2: own play-by-play voice went on the air days before kickoff
- 9:40Speaker 2: and said out loud, the ball security would decide this game.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Not the pass rush, not the run defense, ball security.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Everyone around this program saw the exact blueprint for a
- 9:51Speaker 2: loss before it happened.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And the offense somehow walked right into it anyway.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Here's the part that would worry me if I'm an
- 9:57Speaker 2: Oklahoma fan more than just the loss itself. Venables spent
- 10:01Speaker 2: the entire week talking about turnover margin about discipline about
- 10:05Speaker 2: the things that don't show up as flashy as a
- 10:06Speaker 2: touchdown but he said they decide games anyway he wasn't
- 10:11Speaker 2: even necessarily talking about Oklahoma when he said those things
- 10:13Speaker 2: he was breaking down how Michigan somehow survived Western Michigan
- 10:17Speaker 2: despite losing every single one of those categories And then
- 10:20Speaker 2: his team went out and did the exact thing that
- 10:22Speaker 2: he had spoken about all week. This was not a
- 10:25Speaker 2: talent problem. It was a discipline problem, plain and simple.
- 10:28Speaker 2: A turnover problem and making the wrong read at the
- 10:31Speaker 2: worst possible time. It was an offense that couldn't finish
- 10:34Speaker 2: drives when it mattered. A quarterback who is showing you
- 10:38Speaker 2: that he needs to grow in those moments.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And that was the difference in the game.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Oklahoma will not be a top 11 team anymore, but
- 10:46Speaker 2: the season is not over.
- 10:48Speaker 1: The schedule, though, does not get any easier.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Next Saturday, Oklahoma gets one more reprieve before Georgia comes
- 10:56Speaker 2: to town, or before you go to Georgia is maybe
- 11:00Speaker 2: the better way to say that. A game in Athens
- 11:03Speaker 2: will absolutely test them just like this one did. And
- 11:07Speaker 2: if Saturday's performance travels down to Athens the same way
- 11:11Speaker 2: that they played in Ann Arbor, this will be a
- 11:15Speaker 2: lot more than just a one-loss speed bump. It'll become
- 11:18Speaker 2: a road trend and not a good one. Brett Venables
- 11:21Speaker 2: has two weeks, and he also has a defense that
- 11:24Speaker 2: can play with anybody in the country right now.
- 11:26Speaker 1: I think we all agree with that.
- 11:28Speaker 2: What's not real yet, though, and what still has to
- 11:32Speaker 2: be earned, is an offense and a quarterback capable of,
- 11:35Speaker 2: I don't think they can match how good the defense is,
- 11:38Speaker 2: but at least playing close. Oklahoma didn't lose on Saturday
- 11:42Speaker 2: because they weren't good enough on paper. They lost because
- 11:45Speaker 2: when the moment showed up, their quarterback handed the game
- 11:47Speaker 2: directly to the opponent. And their offense never gave the
- 11:50Speaker 2: defense's effort anywhere to land. I think that's on them.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I also don't think that Georgia's going to wait around
- 11:57Speaker 2: for them to figure it out. So the same way
- 11:59Speaker 2: that Michigan responded from the Central Michigan game, Oklahoma now
- 12:03Speaker 2: has 14 days to figure out how to do the
- 12:05Speaker 2: same exact thing.
- 12:06Speaker 1: I picked you guys. I believed in you. I thought
- 12:09Speaker 1: it was you guys that were going to win.
- 12:10Speaker 2: I was wrong.
- 12:12Speaker 1: You were wrong. All that's fine, right? It stinks.
- 12:14Speaker 2: We got to move on from it. But they've got
- 12:17Speaker 2: to figure some things out real quick there in Norman.
- 12:19Speaker 2: We appreciate you guys for tuning in today. We appreciate
