Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17So I'm super excited to bring you guys the stories for today.
- 0:20But before that, I wanted to let you guys know that I had dinner
- 0:24last night with Jordy and it was so good.
- 0:27We reconnected and it was just exactly what we needed.
- 0:31So I'm really excited because I think she's going to come on the
- 0:34pod in a couple weeks. Like we still need some time to
- 0:38figure out exactly what the episode would be like.
- 0:41And she needs to kind of settle into her new normal for a little
- 0:43bit because she has some exciting news and developments
- 0:46going on. So we will plan for that in the
- 0:49next couple of weeks. It will be like a deep dive, a
- 0:51Friday episode, but it'll probably be quite like
- 0:53conversational. If she does come on the pod,
- 0:56maybe I'll actually do like AQ and A and you guys can submit.
- 1:00So follow me on Instagram. Way more of you guys listen to
- 1:03the podcast, then follow me on Instagram.
- 1:06So please follow me on Instagram.
- 1:08It's at Lord Meister under score.
- 1:09OK, so that's where I'll probably put the Q&A.
- 1:14Anyways, let's just get right into the stories.
- 1:16So the first story that I have for you guys is that Ariana
- 1:19Grande has finally addressed her Nickelodeon days.
- 1:23So following Penn Badgley's appearance in Ariana's music
- 1:26video for The Boy Is Mine, Ariana joined him on his podcast
- 1:30Pod Crushed, where they discussed a variety of topics
- 1:33including Broadway and grandparents.
- 1:35But one part of the podcast is going viral and that is where
- 1:39Ariana reflects on her time at Nickelodeon.
- 1:42So Ariana works on two of Dan Schneider's shows, Victorious
- 1:45and Sam and Kat, where she played the character Cat
- 1:48Valentine. With increasing allegations
- 1:50about the onset environment, highlighted by the release of
- 1:53the Quiet Onset docu series earlier this year, and of
- 1:56course, Jeanette Mccurdy's book I'm Glad My Mom Died, fans have
- 1:59been waiting for Ariana's response to this whole
- 2:02situation. Social media users were
- 2:04especially concerned about Ariana as sexualized videos of
- 2:08her acting on the show have started to re emerge, especially
- 2:11videos involving what seems like a foot fetish.
- 2:14In the interview, Ariana begins by noting how excited she was to
- 2:17get cast on Victorious and how grateful she is that she created
- 2:21something special for so many young kids.
- 2:23However, she continues by saying that she feels as if the cast
- 2:26has started, quote, reprocessing the whole situation now.
- 2:30The hosts then ask Ariana about child acting in general, where
- 2:34she says, quote, the environment needs to be made safer if kids
- 2:38are going to be acting. Ariana also notes how important
- 2:40it would be for these young stars to have a support system,
- 2:43whether that be through therapy. Family members are both, quote,
- 2:46the things that the survivors have come forward about.
- 2:49There's not a word for how devastating that is to hear.
- 2:52I think the environment just needs to be made a lot safer all
- 2:55around. Like I said, I'm still in real
- 2:57time reprocessing my relationship to it, she said.
- 3:00In a similar vein, Ariana touched on the power dynamic
- 3:04between the producers and the actors, saying that these young
- 3:07stars would feel validated when they got a laugh out of the
- 3:10producers and the directors. Because of this, Ariana said she
- 3:13felt for a long time like the innuendos on the show where
- 3:16it's, quote, cool differentiation.
- 3:19But looking back now, she says, quote, I don't know.
- 3:21I think it all just happened so quickly.
- 3:23And now looking back on some of the clips, I'm like, damn, like,
- 3:26really? I don't know if we will ever get
- 3:29more from Ariana about this because she is such a big star.
- 3:33She does have to be really careful about how she talks
- 3:36about her experiences and just, you know, her child's stardom in
- 3:40general. I think she has a lot to lose if
- 3:44she is really open about things and maybe she just hasn't, you
- 3:48know, taken the time to really unpack all of it.
- 3:51I'm glad she's open to talking about it.
- 3:53You never know what these huge celebrities like, what they will
- 3:56tell their publicist they're like, not willing to talk about.
- 3:59So I like that she was willing to address it.
- 4:01I think it's necessary, especially because she is
- 4:04showing some solidarity for her former cast mates.
- 4:08But I think this is probably like all we're going to get from
- 4:10her about this. All right.
- 4:11Another podcast related story that I have for you guys is
- 4:14Billie Eilish on the BBC Sounds Miss Me podcast talking about
- 4:19being ghosted. This is just relatable.
- 4:21So speaking with host Lily Allen and Makita Oliver, Billie opens
- 4:25up about how it feels to be ghosted.
- 4:28In the interview, she discusses how she experienced a crazy
- 4:31ghosting last December where someone she had known for years
- 4:35completely cut contact with her quote.
- 4:37It was somebody that I'd also known for years and had a plan
- 4:40day of on the phone making a plan.
- 4:42This is my address. Be there at 3.
- 4:44Never heard from him again, Billy said.
- 4:47She even joked about how the abrupt ghosting left her
- 4:50wondering if the man had died, saying did you die?
- 4:54Did you literally die? While Billy didn't name drop the
- 4:57man's name, she did mention that she still hasn't heard from him.
- 5:01She also said that soon after she noticed that he was dating
- 5:04someone. Quote.
- 5:05I was like what a fucking little pathetic man.
- 5:07What a tiny little man. It was literally unbelievable.
- 5:10To this day never texted me again.
- 5:13So this is a crazy story. Like imagine ghosting Billie
- 5:17Eilish. I'm sure this person is also
- 5:19famous but what the actual fuck. Like ghosting an actual A list
- 5:24talent like that is so unreal. I need to know who that person
- 5:29was. But yes just so relatable.
- 5:31I'm loving it. I really liked this interview.
- 5:33You know what I think BBC sounds like?
- 5:35I think this podcast, Miss Me is doing really well.
- 5:37Like a lot of podcasts created by big publications, like legacy
- 5:43publications, they just don't hit.
- 5:45But even the video editing, it was all like very on trend.
- 5:48It was very cool. I really liked watching it.
- 5:50I'd never listened to ABBC Sounds podcast before.
- 5:54I'm probably like saying the most obvious thing like they're
- 5:57probably winning awards and everybody probably knows that
- 5:59they're really cool podcast, but I only just discovered it from
- 6:02this interview, so I liked it. Anyways, the last story that I
- 6:05have for you guys is very online.
- 6:07We did two kind of mainstream stories and now we have this
- 6:11one. This story is about the trad
- 6:13wife Tik Toker who was fired from her job for saying a racial
- 6:17slur and how she is possibly now moving into the right wing media
- 6:22space. So Tik Toker Lily Gaddis is
- 6:25facing widespread backlash after posting a video where she used a
- 6:29racial slur. In a video where she is
- 6:31discussing relationships while preparing food, Lily referenced
- 6:35marriage and used the N word when talking about who Quote.
- 6:38Everyone I know is currently married to Lily.
- 6:41Is a white woman OK? And this has sparked significant
- 6:45controversy. Although the video was initially
- 6:48posted to TikTok, it quickly spread to X, where users began
- 6:51circulating it and expressing their shock.
- 6:53The post by ex user at Rise E Do has since accumulated 74.5
- 6:59million views. Many commented on how crazy it
- 7:03was that not only did she use this word but also how casually
- 7:06she used it. Quote, black outrage is
- 7:09guaranteed money. They going to run her views up
- 7:12and then she's going to rebrand to a lifestyle influencer and
- 7:14apologize for her past behavior. Quote This is funny until you
- 7:18realize that white people no longer fear reprimand for being
- 7:21openly racist. Wrote another.
- 7:24Since then, Lily's TikTok account has been deleted.
- 7:27Whether it was taken down from the platform or she chose to
- 7:29delete the account remains unclear.
- 7:32However, before she left the platform, she showed no remorse
- 7:35for her actions, saying that she quote couldn't find a care for
- 7:39how Black people reacted to the video.
- 7:41She also posted on X writing quote.
- 7:43Thanks black community for helping to launch my new career
- 7:45in conservative media. You all played your role well
- 7:48like the puppets you are. Oh my God this woman is vile.
- 7:53Like this is one of the most openly racist things I think
- 7:57we've seen online in a long time.
- 7:59This has left many users questioning if this was all just
- 8:02a ploy for her to pivot to media quote.
- 8:05The one thing she is correct about is conservative media are
- 8:08going to love her. A Christian white woman fired
- 8:10for using a racial slur playing the victim. 1 user wrote on
- 8:14Reddit quote she is acknowledging conservative media
- 8:17thrives on racism. She's also acknowledging her
- 8:20priorities, fame, not journalism or serving her audience or some
- 8:24such. Wrote another.
- 8:25So because of this, Lily was soon doxed leading to her place
- 8:29of work, choosing to fire her basically for this behavior.
- 8:32She was previously working at Roof of the Carolinas, which is
- 8:35a home healthcare company for the elderly and the disabled.
- 8:39The company issued a statement announcing her departure on X.
- 8:42The statement characterized Lily as a newly hired employee before
- 8:46saying that her remarks, quote, do not align with the values and
- 8:49beliefs of our company. Quote, as soon as we were made
- 8:52aware of the situation, we took immediate action to pull the
- 8:54employee from her assignment, which is not directly with any
- 8:58client of ours and the employee in question is no longer with
- 9:01our company, The statement continues.
- 9:02We are owned and operated by African American, female and
- 9:05immigrant owned businesses and handled the situation as quickly
- 9:08as we could. OK, so I actually wanted to talk
- 9:12about this story. Obviously, I recapped it and I
- 9:15am bringing light to this story. And I don't know actually how I
- 9:19feel about that because I wanted to reference something that my
- 9:24good friend Crystal, who also is the owner of Z Feed, which is
- 9:27another amazing independent media company here in Australia.
- 9:30She talked about on her TikTok recently, which is like, please
- 9:33be mindful of who you platform when you're talking about rage
- 9:37bait and who you're stitching and duetting.
- 9:39And I think this is one of those instances.
- 9:41And I fully recognize that I am part of the problem here by
- 9:44talking about this, but I think this is like a good opportunity
- 9:47to talk about it because this absolutely blew up.
- 9:50And yes, she absolutely deserves served to be fired from her job
- 9:54and the consequences that have come with that.
- 9:56But at the same time, I think we have to consider when we, like
- 9:59myself included, when we report on these stories, when we cover
- 10:02them on TikTok, when we're amplifying them in any way with
- 10:05a stitch of duet comment, even a favorite, like anything that
- 10:09you're doing, that is giving our attention to that person.
- 10:13And that is therefore amplifying that message.
- 10:16And that is like not just indirectly, but directly hurting
- 10:20a lot of people. Like I can only imagine how
- 10:23hurtful and painful this whole situation would be to be a black
- 10:28person watching this play out. This girl Lily have no remorse.
- 10:33You know, just say the most vile things.
- 10:35And even if the majority, the vast majority of people are
- 10:39like, what the fuck? And, you know, are speaking out
- 10:43against her, that is still inflicting so much pain on a
- 10:47group of people for what? For this to be amplified and her
- 10:52to get more attention. And like she said, now she can
- 10:55maybe parlay into media, you know, she's kind of getting what
- 10:58she wanted. It was very obviously rage bait.
- 11:01So I think that this is like a good opportunity for us to
- 11:05reflect on that. And I think when it comes to
- 11:08these instances, it mostly is, you know, the people who are
- 11:11trying to be allies that are probably doing the most harm.
- 11:15And I think that's really important for all of us to
- 11:17consider. You know, I do try and cover
- 11:20topics like this on my podcast, and I know some of you guys
- 11:24appreciate it. But occasionally I do get
- 11:26feedback that says, you know, like you talking about this when
- 11:29you're not part of that group can be more harmful or like,
- 11:32please be more careful about this.
- 11:34So I just want to acknowledge that I am covering this story.
- 11:38It is, I think, an important story to cover for that context,
- 11:42in that context of like, we need to really think about who we
- 11:45give our attention to. And yes, it is vile and
- 11:49disgusting and I am glad that it got amplified because of the
- 11:53consequences. But on the other hand, I'm not
- 11:55glad that it got amplified because I imagine that there's
- 11:58probably about 100 million people legitimately that have
- 12:01seen that video and many of them would have been very triggered
- 12:05and hurt by that. And it's just a disgusting
- 12:09situation. I will be more mindful in the
- 12:11future about what I cover when it comes to these like viral
- 12:15TikTok rage baiting moments, and I'm kind of using this one as an
- 12:19example or like for context for that.
- 12:21Anyways, guys, thank you so much for listening to Mini Scroll.
- 12:25I hope you liked this episode. I hope you like this podcast.
- 12:28Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 12:31I love you guys so much. Tomorrow there will be a deep
- 12:33dive and then I will talk to you on Monday.
- 12:36OK, bye.
