- 0:57Alcoholics achieve sobriety. Hi there everyone.
- 1:01It's Glenda here, alcoholic. I think I got the green light.
- 1:06Karen, I'm here starting. So thanks.
- 1:11Thanks for inviting me tonight. I had volunteered a while back
- 1:15and happened to come pop up and I agreed to do it because I
- 1:22thought it would be a good idea to agree to do it, even though I
- 1:27could have been relaxing. I think it came up right.
- 1:31It was meant to be. So yeah, I haven't been a guest
- 1:35speaker before, really. So I think I didn't really
- 1:40overthink it too much and ask too many questions of Michelle
- 1:44on how I should go. I've listened to guest speakers
- 1:47before, but yeah, Once Upon a time, yes, it's Glenda.
- 1:53My sobriety date is 16th of November 2016.
- 1:57I'm 43 years old. I'm married with two children.
- 2:01I own my house and I have a dog and a cat and I have a full time
- 2:04job. And that's just a little bit
- 2:07about me. I'm doing this on my telephone,
- 2:10so I'm hoping and assuming they all are hearing me, what it was
- 2:15like. I had loving parents, David and
- 2:21Jackie, and I had a younger brother and younger sister and
- 2:25we moved around a lot in my early life because of my dad's
- 2:30job and I didn't know any different.
- 2:33That was my normal and my mum made it fun and it was fun.
- 2:38And yeah, we moved with my dad to Papua New Guinea and whilst
- 2:47we lived there, my mother died in a car accident.
- 2:52And yeah, I remember being in New Guinea and my parents would
- 2:57entertain a lot and have lots of people over and, and we'd have
- 3:01parties down the park all the time.
- 3:04All the kids would get together and entertain one another and
- 3:07the parents would sit around and talk and drink.
- 3:09So yeah, that kind of lifestyle was appealing even at a young
- 3:14age. It was fun.
- 3:16And yeah, my, my mum died and we moved back to Australia and, you
- 3:23know, things were a bit harder after that.
- 3:26And my dad drank his feelings about my mother, I guess.
- 3:35I suppose I noticed this behaviour and, you know, it's a
- 3:40good way to squash feelings of sadness.
- 3:43And. Yeah, Dad, Dad remarried and
- 3:46started to get happier again. And it disturbed me because, you
- 3:52know, I thought, like, my mother was being forgotten and replaced
- 3:56and I and I moved out and moved with my grandparents, who are my
- 4:01mother's parents. And my grandfather, you know, he
- 4:04used to have vodka. He dealt with feelings of losing
- 4:09his daughter by drinking and. Yeah, they let me drink on
- 4:14occasion, and then on occasion I would steal the Sherry and, you
- 4:18know, take it to school. Started experimenting and drank
- 4:23with my friends. We all were experimenting and
- 4:28yeah, it was great. I thought, this is being an
- 4:31adult now. I even drank stupidly year 11 of
- 4:36high school. I we had a formal in year 11 as
- 4:39well as having one in year 12. It's like a semi formal formal.
- 4:44I got drunk at my friend's farm and I fell on the concrete and
- 4:47smashed my tooth. A tiny chip, a reminder.
- 4:51Could have been much worse now I realized.
- 4:53But yeah, my friends from school said remember doing this.
- 4:57Do you remember doing that? No, not really.
- 5:00And I kind of just laughed it off.
- 5:02But no one else had ridiculous stories like that.
- 5:06But yeah. And then so went through high
- 5:09school, Awkward, awkward. You know, I hear a lot in AA
- 5:13about people not fitting in in high school.
- 5:15I just thought that was. I just think that's everyone.
- 5:18It's just awkward years. But they went.
- 5:22I went by relatively unscathed in high school.
- 5:29I think I even had a boyfriend. But yeah, it's hard to remember.
- 5:33I was, I know I was a bit frigid, but anyway, then I
- 5:36joined the Air Force straight from after high school, and
- 5:41yeah, I wasn't frigid anymore. I just had all my own money, my
- 5:45own time, and a new exciting life.
- 5:50And booze was just huge in the culture.
- 5:56I had an alcoholic Air Force uncle.
- 6:00I had AI have a alcoholic Air Force father and yeah, lifestyle
- 6:08in the Air Force was great. Really, really fun times.
- 6:13Like so many parties and you know, a bit of study and a bit
- 6:16of training in there. But what I can remember, it was
- 6:21absolutely fun, fun time. And then of course I got into
- 6:27trouble and it was alcohol related, made some, you know,
- 6:34probably poor choices in partners and all under the
- 6:38influence of alcohol. And yeah, So what happened was I
- 6:43moved posting to Melbourne and the booze, I dropped comedies.
- 6:50I've, I get hooked up with a guy that likes booze, I like booze
- 6:56or my friendship group like booze.
- 6:58They were the people that I flocked to though, really.
- 7:01And yeah, people just kept getting opportunities ahead of
- 7:04me and promoted ahead of me. And I remember the trouble.
- 7:10And it was all booze related, yes.
- 7:13So I met my husband and we bonded over a few beers, of
- 7:20course, and I progressed into my marriage and with him.
- 7:25Beautiful man. And you know, I had the usual
- 7:31let's live together and get married and have babies and
- 7:38yeah, and the drinking went away a little bit when I was pregnant
- 7:41and then came back. And then it really progressed in
- 7:45me. It got more frequent closer
- 7:51together. The drinks significantly changed
- 7:56from sweet white wines and beers to red wines.
- 8:01They seem to take my fancy. I never really could afford hard
- 8:07spirits. I was always a bit of a
- 8:09cheapskate, really. It also caused problems.
- 8:13Yeah, financial problems because the decision making was poor
- 8:17between my husband and I and he's not an alcoholic, he was a
- 8:21gambler. So yeah, we had terrible time
- 8:24with money. We had good times and bad times.
- 8:28And then yeah, the the drinking is really what brought us down.
- 8:34It really did. We had some really great times.
- 8:38We had a property in Kangaroo Island and my husband worked so
- 8:42hard to have that. You know, he did like to bit
- 8:46like we had a lot of money. But, you know, it was a nice
- 8:50project and we were proud of it. But really what made us lose it,
- 8:55lose it was the booze, you know, and the gambling.
- 9:01I mean, it didn't help. I kind of for sometimes always
- 9:04feel like it's my fault. Sometimes, always, I sometimes
- 9:07feel on reflection that it was all my fault.
- 9:11But yeah, so things got a bit worse when I took a redundancy
- 9:18and I, I had a six month old baby and I took a redundancy and
- 9:26I hadn't really stopped drinking very much in that pregnancy.
- 9:31I even remember ordering 2 wines with dinner when I was in just
- 9:36after I'd given birth to her in the hospital.
- 9:40And I do remember the nurse coming to take away my dinner
- 9:47and I stopped her from taking away the wine and she tutted at
- 9:51me. Remember that.
- 9:53But yeah, I, we moved. We moved house with a six month
- 10:01old baby and I had redundancy money.
- 10:05So we got new, new stuff, which made Sean feel good.
- 10:10And I had time at home with the baby and not, you know, needing
- 10:14to go out. So I just drank a lot and moved
- 10:19house from there. When we bought our bought our
- 10:21house finally. That was some terrible drinking.
- 10:24Sorry. In that time when I was renting,
- 10:26I hated renting. And then we finally bought a
- 10:29house and I thought, I thought get better when I'm because it's
- 10:34a fresh start with a new house and everything, but it didn't.
- 10:40And I I used to hook up my trailer, pack my house up, do
- 10:45loads in my car and my trailer. I got very good with the tie
- 10:49down strap and drive furniture between my house, my houses
- 10:55removing being a removalist of my own stuff.
- 10:58Pissed driving with towing a trailer.
- 11:01Like what a Dick head. But yeah, so anyway, couple of
- 11:08years at the new house and yeah, things declined and I was
- 11:15getting really sick and yeah, just my, my behaviour was just
- 11:20terrible and I was really being horrible to my body.
- 11:26But just my skin was awful, my hair.
- 11:29And you know, I'd, I'd have a shower and try and make myself
- 11:32look good on the outside, get up at 5:30 and do all the chores
- 11:36and really, really try to make things look OK.
- 11:41It's very tiring work. And yeah, and then I hit rock
- 11:48bottom and went off to rehab for 2 1/2 weeks.
- 11:53And yeah, just started turning it around.
- 11:57I, I turned it around, I stopped drinking and I really thought it
- 12:03might be my only chance to really make a goal of it.
- 12:08So don't do it half heartedly. So I listened to the doctors and
- 12:14the nurses and the alcohol counsellor and just started
- 12:20doing what I was told. Yeah, I'm trying.
- 12:25I really started trying. And you know, while I was
- 12:29staying there at the, I went to the church and I've been going
- 12:34to the church ever since. I find that the place that gives
- 12:38me comfort and I kind of liken it to not going to RSL, going to
- 12:46the church. I knew hang out almost I knew
- 12:50something to do wholesome hobby. Yeah so I am good at work.
- 13:00I started to be able to talk to my boss and be within a breath
- 13:04of her because the paranoia from how I was living before had
- 13:10disappeared and I wasn't paranoid that I was going to get
- 13:14in trouble for drinking at work. I didn't drink at work, but I
- 13:17still smelled like booze the next day.
- 13:20I started to get good and bad to concentrate and get, you know, a
- 13:25lot happier almost straight away.
- 13:28And six months I've been sober and I got arrested for drug
- 13:33trafficking and I then had to for my dad worked not far from
- 13:41where I worked and I had to try and plead my case to keep my
- 13:47job. I was six months sober and I
- 13:51still wasn't completely honest. I was too scared to be honest.
- 13:55I, I said I didn't do it. I lied and I, you know, got told
- 14:06the lawyer that I didn't know what I was doing and made-up
- 14:10some bullshit and, you know, the charges were dropped and but I
- 14:25didn't get off. I still lost my job.
- 14:28I lost respect from my bosses, irrespective of my parents
- 14:36really. They still love me by the way
- 14:39and have forgiven me. But yeah, I Because the charges
- 14:47were dropped, I could have then maybe tried to fight for my job
- 14:52or my rights, but I had to concentrate on staying sober or
- 14:59fighting for a job that I realized that I didn't really
- 15:03like anyway. And, and, and keep lying and
- 15:07trying to just keep lying like I had no energy for that.
- 15:14So I had to concentrate. I concentrated on the, on the
- 15:18getting sober and then I cleaned houses and worked my butt off
- 15:27and then got another job that I loved and just, you know, made a
- 15:33decision to try and be grateful and happy instead of feel sorry
- 15:40for myself. Yeah, did end up getting a
- 15:46sponsor in AA and doing, going through the steps and made some
- 15:52amends. And I, I do find that that was
- 15:57very helpful in dropping baggage and getting on with the life of
- 16:06the sober, the sober living just to get on with it.
- 16:10And IAS taught me, you know, don't forget about the crappy
- 16:15shit that you did, but you know, how can get get on with being
- 16:22happy. That's one of the biggest things
- 16:25I've I've taken from it. There's just something about it.
- 16:29It's like a bit of a club and it's an outing and it's when
- 16:35you're feeling restless, you can go there because it's not good
- 16:40to be restless. So.
- 16:45And yeah, I've I'm still got a lot to learn.
- 16:51I do some service work which helps keep me busy.
- 16:58And I can also see with some clarity that not only doing
- 17:04suggested, suggested doing suggested things, things that
- 17:09your husband suggests and your parents suggests, people that
- 17:13are wiser than you suggest, you know, take it all, think,
- 17:17consider it, consider the advice, especially if you've
- 17:20asked for it. And, you know, be prepared to
- 17:25ask for help. You know, I can go to the
- 17:29doctor's now with an ailment and listen and do the suggested
- 17:34things. You know, just it, it sounds so
- 17:38simple and it just sounds. But, you know, I don't think I
- 17:42did that those things before, I never paid attention.
- 17:45I thought I knew better or I forgot the advice as soon as it
- 17:49was given. But, you know, now that I can
- 17:52sort of actively listen, you know, a A has taught me to be a
- 17:57better listener, I think. And yeah, I know that I'm
- 18:03struggling at the moment, but I know that I can get through it.
- 18:06And, you know, I have the love of my, my sister and my dad and
- 18:14my husband, my husband's family. You know, when I hear about
- 18:21things happening in Myanmar, I got to take, I've got to be
- 18:26grateful for what, you know, for what I have.
- 18:29I don't have a terrible life. You just have to bring it back
- 18:33to gratitude. You know, I have Wi-Fi.
- 18:35I have a phone and a car and a job.
- 18:39And, you know, if I was drinking, I probably wouldn't
- 18:44have any of those things because I was getting really, really
- 18:49sick. And now I'm getting better and
- 18:53yeah, I think, I think I can finish.
- 18:58I, I appreciate being asked and I hope that I made some kind of
- 19:03a sense in what I was saying. I, I was a bit nervous and I
- 19:12thought, should I prepare? Should I write notes?
- 19:16You know, the alcoholic mind was going a little bit and then I
- 19:20did a meditation, which was also homework that I had to do for my
- 19:23course that I'm doing tomorrow. So that helped me, I think.
- 19:29I'm sure you guys will let me know whether I sound crazy.
- 19:34But yeah, I love you all. And just all the glory to God.
- 19:38I won't forget about that because, you know, someone
- 19:41definitely was looking out for me and I prayed that I would
- 19:46speak the words, the good words tonight.
- 19:48So I hope that prayer came true. Thank you.
