- 0:00Welcome to the show, everybody!
- 0:01I'm Dangerous Zygos, C.E.O.
- 0:04of Currency Development, and I'm joined by DJ Universe, Calvin Blingwell,
- 0:08and Dandy Market.
- 0:09DJ Universe, I need to start with a date and a number that should be on every
- 0:14independent artist's radar: January 2026.
- 0:18As of that month, the mechanical royalty rate in the U.S.
- 0:21jumped to thirteen point one cents per physical or digital download,
- 0:26and on the streaming side, the songwriter and mechanical share is on a climbing path
- 0:31to hit a fifteen point three five percent cap by 2027.
- 0:36Fifteen point three five percent.
- 0:38Now, to a lot of bedroom producers or indie artists, that sounds like pocket change,
- 0:43but when you multiply that across a hundred thousand or a million streams on Spotify
- 0:48or Apple Music, that is real rent money.
- 0:52The problem I see every single day managing talent is that guys think because
- 0:56DistroKid or TuneCore put their track on the platforms, they are fully covered.
- 1:01They do not realize mechanical money is a completely separate lane from performance
- 1:07royalties.
- 1:08Man, you are preaching to the choir.
- 1:10Coming up in Baton Rouge and now being out here in Calabasas,
- 1:14I had to learn this the hard way.
- 1:16Unsigned artists are leaving thousands on the table because they do not understand
- 1:20the money trail.
- 1:21If you are not registered with a Performance Rights Organization like ASCAP or BMI
- 1:27for your performance side, AND the Mechanical Licensing Collective,
- 1:31the MLC, for your mechanical side, that money does not just wait for you forever.
- 1:37It absolutely does not.
- 1:38You have to stay lit to survive in this game, and letting your money sit in some
- 1:42black box pool is the opposite of lit.
- 1:45If that money goes unclaimed for too long, the MLC is legally allowed to pool those
- 1:50unclaimed royalties and distribute them to the major publishers based on their
- 1:53market share.
- 1:54You are literally funding Universal and Sony's holiday parties with your unclaimed
- 1:59streams.
- 2:00Think about the absurdity of that.
- 2:01Your lack of administrative discipline is actively subsidizing your biggest
- 2:05competitors.
- 2:06From a currency and business development perspective, ownership without
- 2:10administration is like having a gold chain without the clasp.
- 2:13It looks great, but you are going to lose it the second you walk out the door.
- 2:16You have to get your paperwork right before you start looking for a deal.
- 2:20And let us talk about the beatmakers and the producers specifically.
- 2:23I work with so many engineers and producers who get a cool placement,
- 2:27they get their name in the description, and they think they made it.
- 2:31But did you secure your publishing splits?
- 2:33Did you clear that sample?
- 2:35Did you sign a co-write agreement?
- 2:37If you do not have those split sheets done, that thirteen point one cent rate or
- 2:41that fifteen point three five percent streaming cap means absolutely nothing to your
- 2:46bank account because the system does not know who to pay.
- 2:50Exactly, but the game is changing in how artists can leverage their catalog once the
- 2:54paperwork is tight.
- 2:56We are seeing these new financial models pop up, like TuneCore partnering with RoyFi
- 3:01to offer what they call non-recourse royalty advances.
- 3:04This is not the old school record label trap.
- 3:08Hold up, let us break down what "non-recourse" actually means for the artist on the
- 3:12ground.
- 3:13Because when I was trying to fund my first tour run from Baton Rouge,
- 3:17the sharks wanted everything.
- 3:19In a true non-recourse deal, the lender gives you cash upfront,
- 3:23they recoup that cash solely from your future music royalties,
- 3:27and once that specific amount is paid back, the claim ends and your rights revert
- 3:32one hundred percent back to you.
- 3:34They cannot come after your car, your house, or your future touring revenue if the
- 3:39streams dry up.
- 3:41That is a massive structural shift from traditional debt, but as a finance guy,
- 3:46I have to urge extreme caution here.
- 3:48The fine print is where they get you.
- 3:50You must confirm that the contract explicitly states "non-recourse" in writing,
- 3:56and you have to scrutinize the recoupment language.
- 3:59What is the fee structure?
- 4:00Are they taking a percentage of your entire catalog's distribution,
- 4:05or just the specific tracks you collateralized?
- 4:09Right, because if you are an indie artist, you can use that upfront bag to fund your
- 4:14operation.
- 4:15Instead of signing away your masters to a major for a fifty thousand dollar advance,
- 4:20you take a ten thousand dollar non-recourse advance.
- 4:24Now you can pay for your tour gas, order a massive run of custom hoodies for the
- 4:28merch table, put down hotel deposits, hire a real videographer for your next three
- 4:34single rollouts, and run targeted social ads.
- 4:37You are funding your own ecosystem without letting a major label own your kids'
- 4:42future royalties.
- 4:44Man, that is how you build real generational wealth.
- 4:47My granddad back in New Orleans used to tell me that knowledge plus understanding
- 4:51produces wisdom.
- 4:52Knowing your numbers is not just boring admin work; it is self-mastery.
- 4:57If you can track every single stream and understand how your royalties flow,
- 5:01you are building a real business that is going to outlive your current hot single.
- 5:06So let us give them the exact blueprint to protect their bag this week.
- 5:09Five moves, no excuses.
- 5:11Move number one: verify your PRO registration with ASCAP, BMI,
- 5:16or SESAC.
- 5:17Make sure your current email and bank info are actually correct in their system.
- 5:22Move number two: register every single song in your catalog directly with the MLC if
- 5:27you are in the U.S., or your specific territory's mechanical rights body.
- 5:31Do not assume your distributor did this for you.
- 5:34Move number three: if you are unsigned and do not want to manage this headache
- 5:38yourself, hire a reputable publishing administrator like Songtrust or TuneCore
- 5:43Publishing.
- 5:44They will take a small cut, but they will collect that global money you cannot reach
- 5:48on your own.
- 5:50Move number four: audit your last quarter's distribution statement.
- 5:55Specifically look for the line items labeled "mechanicals" or "songwriter
- 6:00royalties."
- 6:01If you do not see them, your setup is leaking money.
- 6:06And move number five: before you sign any advance deal, whether it is RoyFi,
- 6:11Beatstars, or a boutique distributor, get a lawyer to confirm the non-recourse terms
- 6:16and the full rights reversion language in writing.
- 6:19Do not take a rep's word over DMs.
- 6:22Keep your business tight, keep your music lit, and we will see you next time.
