Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning from the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, Seahawks Headquarters Headlines,
- 0:09Speaker 2: brought to you by Frostbrewed Coors Light, as cold as
- 0:12Speaker 2: the Rockies. An excerpt recorded before a main interview by
- 0:16Speaker 2: Graham Benziger that aired recently from the coach's house. Mike
- 0:19Speaker 2: McDonald said Broncos coach Sean Payton accused the Seahawks of
- 0:23Speaker 2: cheating before the 2024 season opener in Seattle, and that a, quote,
- 0:27Speaker 2: cold war. ensued between the two coaches, with McDonald and
- 0:31Speaker 2: general manager John Schneider at one point threatening to sue Payton.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Much more on this, especially the absolute lack of journalism
- 0:37Speaker 2: ethics here and all across sports journalism coming up. Mariners
- 0:42Speaker 2: are just about officially cooked now, almost officially eliminated from
- 0:45Speaker 2: playoff contention, lost 7-0 to the Trash Cans at the
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yard in Soto last night. It looked like so many
- 0:50Speaker 2: other M's losses this most disappointing season in franchise history,
- 0:55Speaker 2: including what happened here to Logan Gilbert in the third inning.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Christian drives one. High and deep to left field. A three-pointer.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Christian Walker loves the three-run home run. And the Astros
- 1:09Speaker 2: take a 4-0 lead.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Walker with RBIs 81, 82, and 83 on the year.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I think it's Todd Walker, if I remember, still doing
- 1:18Speaker 2: the Houston Astros call on the Astros network. Logan Gilbert
- 1:22Speaker 2: has allowed 25 home runs this season at the Yard
- 1:25Speaker 2: in Soto. That's the most ever. in a season by
- 1:28Speaker 2: a Mariners pitcher inside T-Mobile Park. Gilbert's home runs on
- 1:31Speaker 2: the road, four. 25 at home, four on the road.
- 1:35Speaker 2: That's inexplicable. Much like the Mariners' season, the M's are
- 1:39Speaker 2: five games back at Texas and Houston. Five games remain.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Any trash cans win, any Rangers win, or any Mariners
- 1:46Speaker 2: loss over the season's final five games will eliminate Seattle
- 1:48Speaker 2: game two of the Houston series tonight. The Colorado Rockies
- 1:52Speaker 2: last night became the first team since the 1962 through
- 1:55Speaker 2: 65 New York Mets, that's a minute ago, to have
- 1:58Speaker 2: four consecutive losing seasons with at least 100 losses. So
- 2:02Speaker 2: I guess it could be worse. New York Giants quarterback
- 2:04Speaker 2: Jackson Dart could miss the rest of the season. Test
- 2:08Speaker 2: on his injured knee. He suffered in the loss to
- 2:09Speaker 2: the Rams Monday night. Showed more damage than the Giants
- 2:12Speaker 2: initially thought. Now on with the Wednesday show. Big Bell,
- 2:16Speaker 2: the News Tribune is down at the Seahawks headquarters here
- 2:19Speaker 2: in Renton and back up at the LA-based studios in
- 2:22Speaker 2: downtown Seattle, Jessamyn McIntyre. Good morning, ma'am.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Good morning. Sorry about the double clutch on the return
- 2:27Speaker 3: of the Mac. I think I wanted to hear it
- 2:28Speaker 3: a little early.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I liked it. Jessamyn has made it a mission of
- 2:32Speaker 2: hers to get Mark Morrison, the artist of Return of
- 2:36Speaker 2: the Mac, on our show. Ooh. Yes, I am.
- 2:41Speaker 4: I have gone up all the crevasses of the various
- 2:45Speaker 4: people that have represented him over the years.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Perhaps we can do that. That'd be cool. Yeah, happy
- 2:51Speaker 2: Wednesday to you, wherever you are, listening on the iHeartRadio
- 2:55Speaker 2: app for free or 933KGR. com or on the old terrestrial radio,
- 2:59Speaker 2: 93.3 FM. Man, yesterday, I was getting my foot rooted
- 3:07Speaker 2: out of sea urchin needles and walking boots and all
- 3:11Speaker 2: this other stuff I had going on.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yep, you sure got that handled.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Jeez. And then Mike McDonald... The national story became Mike
- 3:20Speaker 2: McDonald talking to Graham Benziger. We'll talk a little bit
- 3:25Speaker 2: here in the next segment about the media ethics going on,
- 3:27Speaker 2: the journalism ethics of this.
- 3:29Speaker 3: And that was clearly off the record.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yes. And those of us in sports journalism, in any
- 3:34Speaker 2: form of journalism, know what on and off the record is.
- 3:37Speaker 2: He was in his home. If you've seen the clip,
- 3:41Speaker 2: it's a wide shot of a secondary camera. You can
- 3:44Speaker 2: see the production assistant still setting up the, setting and
- 3:48Speaker 2: the sound and the props and the lights and it's
- 3:51Speaker 2: in his home so mcdonald he's just we've talked about
- 3:56Speaker 2: this he admits he's a nerd he admits he's somewhat
- 3:58Speaker 2: socially uncomfortable in settings and public settings and settings of
- 4:03Speaker 2: interviews and especially sit down ones on one-on-one so he
- 4:06Speaker 2: was trying to break the ice there and he said
- 4:08Speaker 2: i got a funny story about sean payton Now, there's
- 4:11Speaker 2: a whole lot of questions about how did Graham Bensinger
- 4:13Speaker 2: get to Mike McDonald's house, 10 acres outside Seattle, and
- 4:18Speaker 2: had that entree.
- 4:19Speaker 3: He gets a lot.
- 4:21Speaker 4: I don't really understand his background very well, but he
- 4:25Speaker 4: gets a lot of really amazing guests.
- 4:27Speaker 2: But when he does stuff like this, why? It makes
- 4:30Speaker 2: you think, wait a minute, why? But, yeah, it's interesting,
- 4:38Speaker 2: to say the least, from someone who covers the guy
- 4:40Speaker 2: every single day. If you don't go out and cover
- 4:43Speaker 2: someone every single day, you have no accountability to what
- 4:46Speaker 2: you write or air or telecast. You just do it,
- 4:50Speaker 2: and then you move on to the next guy or gal.
- 4:52Speaker 3: This is like clickbait.
- 4:54Speaker 4: I mean, that's what it was, is just you're doing
- 4:57Speaker 4: it for the clicks and nothing else.
- 5:00Speaker 2: If you have to go back in the next day,
- 5:02Speaker 2: like I do and beat writers do here in Seattle,
- 5:04Speaker 2: and deal with Mike McDonald and the Seahawks, you don't
- 5:08Speaker 2: do that. But Graham Bensinger didn't even know where Seattle is.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I mean, I've never seen him at Seahawks headquarters. He
- 5:13Speaker 2: flies out here because Seahawks coach won the Super Bowl
- 5:17Speaker 2: and is being featured on Hard Knocks and then does
- 5:20Speaker 2: an interview with him. And now he's on to the next,
- 5:22Speaker 2: whoever else he's interviewing next for his syndicated television show
- 5:25Speaker 2: and for online. Meanwhile, they keep milking this interview, which
- 5:29Speaker 2: published like they aired it like two weeks ago. And
- 5:33Speaker 2: they keep dribbling out every couple of days, different excerpts
- 5:36Speaker 2: of it. And then this one, is clearly before the
- 5:40Speaker 2: main interview began. We're going to talk to Mike McDonald
- 5:43Speaker 2: today at noon, his regular Wednesday press conference, and you
- 5:46Speaker 2: can bet this subject's going to come up.
- 5:48Speaker 4: I want him to start out by saying, is this
- 5:51Speaker 4: on the record? Just like the best thing he could
- 5:54Speaker 4: start with.
- 5:55Speaker 2: He might do that.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I hope he does.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I've been doing this for, what now, 28 years. since
- 6:01Speaker 2: I left the army. And there is, there are a
- 6:03Speaker 2: couple of things at play here. One, there is an
- 6:05Speaker 2: explicit understanding that unless you declare this is off the record,
- 6:09Speaker 2: either the interview subject or the interviewee say, well, this
- 6:13Speaker 2: is off the record. Unless you do that, technically, yes,
- 6:17Speaker 2: everything is on the record. And if you're speaking to
- 6:19Speaker 2: a television journalist or anyone who's interviewing you and cameras
- 6:22Speaker 2: are rolling, that is subject to be aired. That is
- 6:26Speaker 2: true by letter of the journalism law.
- 6:28Speaker 3: But, There's great areas, yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Absolutely. And when you're just making conversation while the interview
- 6:34Speaker 2: is getting set up and.
- 6:37Speaker 3: He was breaking the ice and telling a funny story.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Exactly. And so the context matters here. That's one thing.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I mean, I told Chuck this at 7 o'clock this morning.
- 6:50Speaker 2: I've been covering Mike McDonald now for three years. I
- 6:52Speaker 2: know all kinds of things. What y'all do as beat writers...
- 6:57Speaker 2: covering him, no things that we have not printed or
- 6:59Speaker 2: I've never said on the air that may or may
- 7:03Speaker 2: not be pertinent to the football matter of the Seahawks.
- 7:07Speaker 2: But I have a trust with him. And you lose
- 7:10Speaker 2: that trust when you do things like Graham Benziger did
- 7:13Speaker 2: or his production people that decided to put this out.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I mean, they're all a part of it.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Sure.
- 7:18Speaker 2: But they don't have anything at stake because they're not
- 7:21Speaker 2: out here every day. Right.
- 7:22Speaker 3: They don't have recourse.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Exactly. Exactly. So when you have to face the music
- 7:26Speaker 2: and be out here and deal with, in a professional setting,
- 7:30Speaker 2: the subject that you're deciding whether to air something or
- 7:33Speaker 2: print something, that changes the equation completely. We just met
- 7:37Speaker 2: with Mike McDonald for an hour and a half in
- 7:40Speaker 2: a Nashville hotel when the Seahawks were there for the
- 7:42Speaker 2: joint practice in the preseason game in August, a month ago.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And we're drinking beers and having a good time just
- 7:48Speaker 2: talking about football. And we're asking him questions that are
- 7:51Speaker 2: newsworthy questions that he's given us answers to to inform
- 7:54Speaker 2: us about our coverage. But we didn't print any of it.
- 7:57Speaker 2: And there's stuff that he told us that if we
- 8:00Speaker 2: printed would be national news. But it was well understood,
- 8:03Speaker 2: and nobody had to say, is this off the record?
- 8:05Speaker 2: So by letter of the law, we could have printed
- 8:07Speaker 2: and run with all this. There was something with a
- 8:10Speaker 2: player about three weeks ago on the practice field that
- 8:14Speaker 2: was present, and the Seahawks beat writers were out there
- 8:18Speaker 2: at the beginning. We're allowed out there for the first
- 8:20Speaker 2: five or ten minutes. And the rules basically are whatever
- 8:23Speaker 2: happens in those first five or ten minutes, who's there?
- 8:26Speaker 2: Who's not? It's fair game. You can report it. The
- 8:28Speaker 2: rules are after the practice ends is when you can
- 8:30Speaker 2: start putting videos of the practice beginning and report whatever
- 8:33Speaker 2: you saw. And we saw something that Mike McDonald didn't
- 8:36Speaker 2: want out. And we, as a beat, came back in
- 8:41Speaker 2: the room and McDonald made it clear that he didn't
- 8:44Speaker 2: want us to have seen it, what we saw. And we,
- 8:48Speaker 2: as a beat, came in and I said, The risk
- 8:54Speaker 2: is not worth the reward here. To report this before
- 8:57Speaker 2: week one of the season and to burn your coach
- 8:59Speaker 2: for the rest of the season, it's not worth it.
- 9:01Speaker 2: And the news wasn't worth it. It wasn't that big
- 9:03Speaker 2: of a deal. And so we decided not to air it,
- 9:07Speaker 2: print it, talk about it at all. It went unreported.
- 9:11Speaker 2: And Mike McDonald came up to us the next day
- 9:13Speaker 2: before practice began and walked over to us and said,
- 9:16Speaker 2: thanks for doing me a solid. He knew that none
- 9:18Speaker 2: of us had printed it. None of us had aired it.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Thanks for doing us a solid. He trusts us. That's
- 9:25Speaker 2: the opposite of what Graham Benzinger and his production people
- 9:27Speaker 2: did yesterday. That's the difference between being out here every
- 9:31Speaker 2: day and having a professional relationship and then having the
- 9:33Speaker 2: journalism ethics to manage that relationship and to not. And
- 9:37Speaker 2: especially in television, especially in national television, which, let's face it,
- 9:42Speaker 2: rules the NFL. They pay the bills, $ 6 billion a
- 9:44Speaker 2: year in television revenue. They don't have that responsibility. They
- 9:48Speaker 2: don't have that accountability anymore. to come back the next
- 9:51Speaker 2: day and have to face the music. When I would
- 9:54Speaker 2: write negative things in my time as a baseball beat writer,
- 9:57Speaker 2: I made sure I was there the next day. I
- 9:59Speaker 2: once came in on an, off day in the Oakland
- 10:01Speaker 2: A's on an Easter Sunday to talk to an irate
- 10:04Speaker 2: Billy Bean, the general manager for the A's, about something
- 10:06Speaker 2: I'd written the previous day to be accountable for what
- 10:09Speaker 2: I wrote. And I let him air me out and
- 10:11Speaker 2: I went back at him for what I thought was
- 10:14Speaker 2: what I did and why I did it. And we
- 10:16Speaker 2: kind of just had a detente about it. But the
- 10:19Speaker 2: national people that parachute in and then leave don't have
- 10:22Speaker 2: that personal accountability. And this is a perfect example that
- 10:24Speaker 2: now having talked about all of this, what he actually did.
- 10:28Speaker 2: We'll wear it the next segment. I think it's pretty funny.
- 10:33Speaker 2: It is open source material, anything that's on the internet, right?
- 10:37Speaker 2: And it's, we'll talk next segment about all of this,
- 10:41Speaker 2: but Jess, I mean, you, you, you're on the sidelines.
- 10:43Speaker 2: You see in theater things and, That would be news
- 10:46Speaker 2: about the Washington State Cougars that Cougar fans would be
- 10:49Speaker 2: interested in that you don't tell.
- 10:51Speaker 3: And the opposing teams as well.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I mean, yeah.
- 10:55Speaker 4: So Buda Alukda last year during the Apple Cup, I
- 11:00Speaker 4: heard him say his specific injury at that time. And
- 11:04Speaker 4: he used to be a kook, and I did not
- 11:06Speaker 4: like that he defected to the Huskies. And I heard
- 11:09Speaker 4: him tell his parents, who came down to the first
- 11:13Speaker 4: row of the stands, because I was, you know, going to...
- 11:15Speaker 4: And I heard him say his injury, and I did
- 11:18Speaker 4: not report that.
- 11:20Speaker 3: And I could have. I had every right to.
- 11:23Speaker 4: The fans could hear him if they were listening closely enough.
- 11:27Speaker 3: And I didn't, because what's.
- 11:29Speaker 4: That going to do for me? I reported that I
- 11:31Speaker 4: don't expect him to play the rest of this game.
- 11:34Speaker 4: And just from what I'm seeing on the sidelines. But
- 11:36Speaker 4: I heard exactly what he heard from the medical staff
- 11:41Speaker 4: on the team. And I just chose not to because what?
- 11:47Speaker 4: I just don't understand what good that would do. And
- 11:50Speaker 4: I was the opposing team. And I still didn't do it.
- 11:55Speaker 4: I just, I don't think that there are certain things
- 11:58Speaker 4: that are worth it.
- 11:59Speaker 3: And I, I mean, I've been, this is my.
- 12:01Speaker 4: 15th season doing it and I've been in sports talk
- 12:04Speaker 4: radio for longer than that. And I have learned on
- 12:08Speaker 4: the road to that, you know, mistakes were made and
- 12:11Speaker 4: I learned from them and, you know, that's good experience. And,
- 12:16Speaker 4: and I just think that, Eventually, when you have enough
- 12:19Speaker 4: experience and enough practice in this profession that your moral
- 12:24Speaker 4: compass comes into range, that's kind of like the final tick.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yes, it is. Yes. And you're exactly right. And that's
- 12:32Speaker 2: why you've been doing it for more than a day.
- 12:34Speaker 2: If you didn't have that compass, the cougars wouldn't ask
- 12:37Speaker 2: it back.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Right. But I had some lessons to learn as well
- 12:42Speaker 4: along my way in my first couple years.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And I definitely learned a lot.
- 12:48Speaker 4: And then once you have your skills, like I'm saying,
- 12:52Speaker 4: the final check, the box check is your moral compass.
- 12:57Speaker 2: You'll hear the comments that we're talking about that sparked
- 12:59Speaker 2: all this coming up. Jackson Smith and Jigwip. How does
- 13:03Speaker 2: he do what he does? He now leads the NFL
- 13:05Speaker 2: in yards.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Goodness gracious.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Touchdowns. We'll go deeper into his latest 100-yard game last
- 13:11Speaker 2: weekend at Arizona, how he got so open against a
- 13:13Speaker 2: team that was double-teaming him with a cornerback and a safety.
- 13:16Speaker 2: We'll talk about that. Now at 11 o'clock, we're going
- 13:19Speaker 2: to talk to Bram Weinstein. He is the play-by-play man
- 13:21Speaker 2: for the Washington Commanders. We're going to talk about his
- 13:24Speaker 2: team before the Seahawks face the Commanders outside D.C. this week.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Marcus Mariota is a quarterback for injured Jaden Daniels. while
- 13:32Speaker 2: Dan Quinn's managing his team's fall from the NFC title
- 13:35Speaker 2: game two seasons ago to being in the sub-500 last
- 13:38Speaker 2: year and now 0-2 this season. We'll talk to Bram
- 13:41Speaker 2: Weinstein at 11 o'clock for a view on the Seahawks
- 13:44Speaker 2: opponent this week. 11.30, we'll read back your text and
- 13:46Speaker 2: talk back to the Coma Dodge text line 49451. Your
- 13:50Speaker 2: talk back through the iHeartRadio app or our website, 933kjr. com.
- 13:54Speaker 2: 30 seconds or less, and Jessamyn will play those back
- 13:57Speaker 2: at 11.30. 11.35, Factor Fiction brought to you by the
- 14:00Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino Resort. Casino Hotel, my pick today. I
- 14:05Speaker 2: think I'm going to stay in the college ranks. Then
- 14:08Speaker 2: Ian Furness will join me here at Seahawks headquarters, talking
- 14:11Speaker 2: about what he's got on the show. 12 until 3.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Mike McDonald is talking at 12 o'clock, and then they
- 14:15Speaker 2: practice today. 49451, your first question for the Tacoma Dodge
- 14:20Speaker 2: text line. Your view of Mike McDonald and what he
- 14:22Speaker 2: did with the fan social media post of Broncos training
- 14:26Speaker 2: camp practices. There's a whole issue at hand here, beside
- 14:29Speaker 2: the journalism ethics of it. And then practice today, I'm
- 14:33Speaker 2: going to be watching one to see if Sam Darnold,
- 14:36Speaker 2: what kind of participation is he doing? When we are
- 14:39Speaker 2: out there in the first few minutes of practice, we
- 14:40Speaker 2: do see the quarterbacks throwing. They throw before stretching begins,
- 14:44Speaker 2: and then they join the players and stretch with them.
- 14:47Speaker 2: And we'll see if Darnold is out there for that.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Then we'll shoot away about five or ten minutes into
- 14:52Speaker 2: practice and won't see the actual splitting of reps. But
- 14:55Speaker 2: they are going to share, it appears, the reps today.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Darnold expected to practice for the first time two weeks
- 15:00Speaker 2: to the day after he split. strained his glute, fifth
- 15:03Speaker 2: play of the season when Draymond Jones of New England
- 15:05Speaker 2: sacked him. This is ahead of schedule. Mike McDonald said
- 15:08Speaker 2: it drastically has changed. The prognosis on his return has
- 15:13Speaker 2: drastically changed in the last week or so. Remember, they
- 15:16Speaker 2: feared it might be a hip bone injury, potentially even
- 15:19Speaker 2: a fracture, but tests have shown it's not that. It's
- 15:22Speaker 2: rather in his butt. The muscle, the gluteus up in
- 15:26Speaker 2: his butt, a gluteal strain. So he's going to practice,
- 15:29Speaker 2: and then the issue will be Jessamyn tomorrow. How does
- 15:32Speaker 2: he feel? First time on the field in two weeks.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Does he bounce back fine and his body, everything's fine?
- 15:39Speaker 2: And if so, I would expect he would get more
- 15:40Speaker 2: first-team reps tomorrow. They can't just throw him and give
- 15:43Speaker 2: him all first-team reps today in case he doesn't respond
- 15:45Speaker 2: well tomorrow. They have to give Drew Locke some preparation
- 15:48Speaker 2: with the game plan too. But tomorrow will be the tell,
- 15:52Speaker 2: and if he comes back and bounces back fine, He'll
- 15:55Speaker 2: get more workload tomorrow with the ones, and that would
- 15:57Speaker 2: put him on track if he responds well Friday to
- 15:59Speaker 2: be the starter on Sunday. We have talked about, and
- 16:02Speaker 2: a lot of you chimed in yesterday on the show,
- 16:05Speaker 2: about whether he should start if he's healthy this week.
- 16:08Speaker 2: An 0-2 team with a backup quarterback and their own quarterback,
- 16:11Speaker 2: Drew Locke, performing brilliantly in the two games. I mean,
- 16:15Speaker 2: top of the NFL brilliantly, 72.9%, completion percentage, second highest
- 16:20Speaker 2: passer rating in the league. You just keep playing Locke.
- 16:24Speaker 3: I would say yes for this week. I think that's
- 16:27Speaker 3: the consensus.
- 16:28Speaker 2: That seems what the fans seem with the listeners. That's
- 16:31Speaker 2: what I would do. But also the estimate, there is
- 16:33Speaker 2: something to be said for your franchise quarterback is your guy.
- 16:37Speaker 2: And when he's ready to play the locker room, the
- 16:40Speaker 2: teammates are looking to him to play. And there is
- 16:43Speaker 2: something to be said for the dynamics of that. And
- 16:46Speaker 2: you wouldn't want a Superbowl winning franchise quarterback, healthy and
- 16:49Speaker 2: ready to go mothballed and sitting and watching. And, There
- 16:54Speaker 2: would be guys in the locker room looking at that going,
- 16:55Speaker 2: wait a minute. Where's our guy? Why aren't you playing him?
- 17:01Speaker 2: And this is no Wally Pipps situation. We're not talking
- 17:03Speaker 2: about a quarterback controversy at all. But we're just talking
- 17:06Speaker 2: about pragmatically it might make sense to have Darnold sit
- 17:09Speaker 2: out this game and rest one more week. But there
- 17:11Speaker 2: is that dynamic of he's our guy. He's your franchise
- 17:14Speaker 2: guy who just won you a Super Bowl. And when
- 17:16Speaker 2: he's ready to play, he'll play. So that's all what
- 17:19Speaker 2: the Seahawks are figuring out here the next couple days.
- 17:21Speaker 2: But I'm with you. I would probably– Just err on, okay,
- 17:25Speaker 2: we'll give you another week.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Coming back from injury, yes. Yeah, I mean, it's not just, okay,
- 17:29Speaker 4: Drew Locke balled out. We need Sam for the rest
- 17:32Speaker 4: of the season.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Right. Exactly. Which is the same reason why you're not
- 17:36Speaker 2: going to trade Drew Locke, no matter what somebody would
- 17:38Speaker 2: throw at you, and they're not going to throw at you.
- 17:40Speaker 4: They're not going to trade him. Whether they re-sign him
- 17:42Speaker 4: is another story.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Right, because his price is going up, and there are
- 17:46Speaker 2: teams around the league who look at their quarterback situations
- 17:49Speaker 2: and then look at what Drew Locke's doing, and it's like, uh.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks unlikely. Drew Locke, going into his age
- 17:59Speaker 2: 30 season, would agree to come back as a backup
- 18:01Speaker 2: again as a free agent after performing like he has
- 18:05Speaker 2: on the grand stage here these first two games. He'll
- 18:07Speaker 2: have game tape to go out and shop and get
- 18:09Speaker 2: a contract worthy of a starter somewhere, it would appear. Again,
- 18:13Speaker 2: he's only 29 years old. It's not like he's washed
- 18:16Speaker 2: up and done.
- 18:17Speaker 3: I mean, it's just like Sam signing here at 28.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Correct.
- 18:21Speaker 3: It's exactly the same.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Correct, with a very similar career arc of starting his
- 18:25Speaker 2: first couple of years with the Jets and then a
- 18:27Speaker 2: backup bouncing around teams. Yes, that is true. The other
- 18:31Speaker 2: thing I'm looking for today is Zach Charbonnet. Is he
- 18:33Speaker 2: on the field today? If he is, that means he
- 18:35Speaker 2: was cleared to practice and his 21-day practice window will
- 18:38Speaker 2: have started on the physically unable to perform list. Pup-less
- 18:41Speaker 2: guys still can't play until after the fourth game, but
- 18:44Speaker 2: the rules in the NFL for pup-less players changed this
- 18:47Speaker 2: year and allow them to come back to practice after
- 18:49Speaker 2: the second game of the season, which is the Exequishest ad.
- 18:53Speaker 2: So Charbonnet could be, is eligible to start practicing now.
- 18:56Speaker 2: And Mike McDonald indicated on Monday that the Seahawks do
- 18:59Speaker 2: want to give Charbonnet as much of a run-up past
- 19:03Speaker 2: week four as he can, which means if he's ready
- 19:06Speaker 2: to go, he will practice this week. And a 21-day
- 19:08Speaker 2: window will open so that two of his three weeks
- 19:11Speaker 2: of that window would include the times he couldn't play anyway.
- 19:14Speaker 2: And then he will have practiced two weeks before he
- 19:16Speaker 2: would be eligible to play for the first time week five.
- 19:19Speaker 2: That would be the San Francisco 49ers home game. The
- 19:21Speaker 2: Seahawks are at Washington this week. Then they come home
- 19:24Speaker 2: for back-to-back home games against the reeling Los Angeles Chargers, 0-2,
- 19:28Speaker 2: who've lost to the Cardinals and Raiders. And then in
- 19:31Speaker 2: week five, the early rolling San Francisco 49ers come up
- 19:37Speaker 2: to Lumen Field. And then all of a sudden, the
- 19:38Speaker 2: week six Thursday night game, a Thursday night game after
- 19:41Speaker 2: a Sunday at Denver. That looks a little more interesting
- 19:44Speaker 2: in light of yesterday. And there'll be a lot of
- 19:46Speaker 2: Sean Payton, Mike McDonald storylines going into that.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Six game.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Oh, that'll be fun. I can't wait for that post
- 19:53Speaker 3: game handshake.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Up next, Mike McDonald learns a little lesson on journalism ethics,
- 19:59Speaker 2: specifically how rare they are today. And why he says
- 20:03Speaker 2: Broncos coach Sean Payton accused the Seahawks of cheating. You'll
- 20:05Speaker 2: hear from him and what he said to Graham Benziger next.
- 20:09Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back to Seahawks Headquarters. Greg Bell,
- 20:31Speaker 2: the news champion. Jessamyn McIntyre back at our Elliott Bay
- 20:34Speaker 2: Studios on 93.3 KJRFM. While we've been talking in the
- 20:38Speaker 2: last 20 minutes or so, news is breaking that the
- 20:41Speaker 2: Giants quarterback Jackson Dart is going to be out for
- 20:43Speaker 2: the season because he's going to need left knee surgery
- 20:46Speaker 2: because of a damage to his MCL, his PCL, his
- 20:51Speaker 2: posterior ligament, and the meniscus. According to ESPN and NFL
- 20:55Speaker 2: Network reports, Jackson Dart's season-ending surgery. So it's Jamin Winston
- 21:00Speaker 2: for now.
- 21:02Speaker 3: It's Jamin's time.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Let's go. I guess. You sound pretty excited about that.
- 21:08Speaker 4: I mean, he's just an interesting character. And I like
- 21:10Speaker 4: what he's done with his career, even off the field.
- 21:13Speaker 4: He did a bunch of World Cup coverage. And, yeah,
- 21:18Speaker 4: I'm not a Giants fan, but I have a lot
- 21:21Speaker 4: of people that I know who are.
- 21:22Speaker 3: And, okay.
- 21:26Speaker 2: I neglected to mention during the headlines that on 9.50 a.m. tonight,
- 21:30Speaker 2: the Sounders are playing at home against Real Salt Lake.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Of course, the Sounders... haven't won in, what, 13 straight
- 21:35Speaker 2: MLS matches. They've got ties in a row. It's like
- 21:38Speaker 2: five ties, club record, five ties in a row. It's
- 21:41Speaker 2: a franchise record for winless matches now in the MLS play.
- 21:45Speaker 2: They're in 13th place in the MLS Western Conference, and
- 21:48Speaker 2: Real Salt Lake is in 12th on the playoff, outside
- 21:51Speaker 2: of the playoff picture. Currently, Sounders tonight, that's a 6.30
- 21:54Speaker 2: broadcast at 9.50 a.m. Jackson Feltz, our guy, and the
- 21:58Speaker 2: Sounders crew on 9.50 a.m. Sounders home against Real Salt
- 22:02Speaker 2: Lake Mariners at home tonight. Game two of the series
- 22:04Speaker 2: that is pretty much not meaning anything anymore against the
- 22:06Speaker 2: Trash Cans. See, the Mariners are five games out, five
- 22:10Speaker 2: games to play. Any Trash Can or Rangers win in
- 22:15Speaker 2: any Mariners loss and the M's are officially eliminated. The
- 22:19Speaker 2: only way I believe now the Mariners can make the
- 22:21Speaker 2: playoffs is in a three-way tie between the Trash Cans,
- 22:24Speaker 2: the Rangers, and the Mariners. And that will only happen
- 22:27Speaker 2: if the Rangers and the Trashcans all lose the rest
- 22:31Speaker 2: of their five games while the Mariners all win the
- 22:34Speaker 2: remaining games, two against Houston, three at home against the Angels.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Out here at Seahawks headquarters, we're going to watch today
- 22:41Speaker 2: how much Sam Darnold practices. The plan is that he
- 22:44Speaker 2: will practice for the first time since injuring his glute.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Five plays into the season opener, September the 9th, two
- 22:50Speaker 2: weeks to the day of the injury. He's supposed to
- 22:53Speaker 2: be on the practice field. The question becomes for offensive
- 22:56Speaker 2: coordinator Brian Fleury and Mike McDonald and the staff, how
- 22:59Speaker 2: do you split the practice reps? And how much do
- 23:01Speaker 2: you still give Drew Locke as a hedge in case
- 23:04Speaker 2: Sam Donald doesn't play on Sunday at Washington? And, of course,
- 23:08Speaker 2: how Donald responds to that tomorrow. No matter who's quarterback
- 23:12Speaker 2: this Sunday, he's going to be thrown to Jackson Smith
- 23:13Speaker 2: and Jigba again because that's what you should do for
- 23:16Speaker 2: a guy who's 100 yards receiving is standard fare. We're
- 23:20Speaker 2: going to talk about Jackson Smith and Jake Bennett, how
- 23:22Speaker 2: he keeps doing it despite the NFL's defenses double-teaming him.
- 23:26Speaker 2: We'll talk about that in the next segment at 11 o'clock.
- 23:29Speaker 2: We're going to talk to Bram Weinstein. He is the
- 23:31Speaker 2: play-by-play announcer for the Washington Commanders Radio Network, and he's
- 23:34Speaker 2: going to talk to us about the Seahawks opponent this week.
- 23:36Speaker 2: 11.35 again, Factor Fiction, your chance to win $ 1, 000 from
- 23:40Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 23:42Speaker 3: And Greg's pick today.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I am picking today. I'm going to stay in college.
- 23:47Speaker 2: we talked in the first segment at length about the
- 23:50Speaker 2: journalism ethics here of the Mike McDonald talk with Graham Benziger,
- 23:53Speaker 2: that it certainly appears he thought was off the record
- 23:57Speaker 2: and wouldn't be aired. Well, this is what he said.
- 23:59Speaker 2: We wanted you to hear exactly what McDonald said about
- 24:02Speaker 2: Sean Payton and the Broncos back from 2024, leading into
- 24:06Speaker 2: McDonald's very first game as a head coach for the Seahawks. Casual.
- 24:10Speaker 7: So funny story about, uh, Sean Payton and me is
- 24:13Speaker 7: my first year.
- 24:15Speaker 2: I like Sean a lot.
- 24:16Speaker 7: He, uh, I'm not his biggest. He's not my biggest fan.
- 24:24Speaker 7: So our first year, we played our first game. And
- 24:30Speaker 7: so I'm like, whatever. Fans watch. Fans will post plays
- 24:38Speaker 7: from training camp on Twitter. And so it's like public.
- 24:42Speaker 7: So we took like 100 plays from their training camp.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Good for you.
- 24:47Speaker 7: We're like scouting them, you know? And like, anyways, he
- 24:49Speaker 7: got wind of it and he like lost him. It's
- 24:52Speaker 7: like middle of the season. And like, and we're, and
- 24:55Speaker 7: we won the game. And so like, and we're, and
- 24:56Speaker 7: we were in the fight, like our first year, we
- 24:58Speaker 7: were trying to go on. And so he called Johnny
- 25:02Speaker 7: basically like threatened to come out publicly and do it
- 25:06Speaker 7: like a whole Patriot, like spygate type of thing.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Yeah. And I'm sitting there like, Oh my God. I'm like,
- 25:10Speaker 2: we didn't cheat.
- 25:11Speaker 7: Like, like, You know, we thought it was a Michigan
- 25:13Speaker 7: thing where we had a plant and the whole thing.
- 25:15Speaker 7: And we're like, so we had to like counter with
- 25:17Speaker 7: him to say like, Hey, look, if you come out
- 25:19Speaker 7: of this, like we're going to sue you because it's
- 25:21Speaker 7: not true.
- 25:21Speaker 2: You know?
- 25:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 25:22Speaker 2: And did you ever, uh, did you ever talk to him?
- 25:25Speaker 2: So he, he like, he.
- 25:26Speaker 7: Backed down, but he was like killing John or GM. And, uh,
- 25:30Speaker 7: John was telling me like, dude, did you, I'm like, dude, no. Like,
- 25:33Speaker 7: what are you crazy? Like, I'm not, we're not, that's
- 25:35Speaker 7: not how we do business, you know? And so, uh, anyway,
- 25:39Speaker 7: so the season ends and he, he let it go and,
- 25:41Speaker 7: But it was like the Cold War. I'm going to
- 25:44Speaker 7: hit the button. I'm going to hit the button. We're
- 25:47Speaker 7: going to hit the button. So none of us hit
- 25:50Speaker 7: the button. And so then I went for a run
- 25:52Speaker 7: at the Combine. And so I'm literally getting out of
- 25:54Speaker 7: the elevator at the Marriott there in Indy. And as
- 25:59Speaker 7: soon as I open the door, the floor that I'm at,
- 26:02Speaker 7: here he comes in. And I was kind of over him.
- 26:08Speaker 7: And he's like, hey, coach, you know, and totally, totally
- 26:10Speaker 7: backed down in that moment.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Oh, did he? I was like, oh, man, that's great.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Mike McDonald talking to Graham Benziger. I mean, even if
- 26:19Speaker 2: you don't see the visual of this setting, it obviously
- 26:22Speaker 2: is off the record the way he was speaking and
- 26:25Speaker 2: how he was flippant about speaking about it. All right,
- 26:28Speaker 2: a couple things about this. First of all, many, I
- 26:30Speaker 2: think maybe now all NFL teams have employees who monitor
- 26:35Speaker 2: the Internet and social media. For information and footage on
- 26:38Speaker 2: other teams, especially during training camp, because that's the only
- 26:41Speaker 2: time of the NFL year fans can watch. And every
- 26:45Speaker 2: single person who breathes these days has a phone. And
- 26:48Speaker 2: so training camp, some people put Facebook Live broadcast of
- 26:54Speaker 2: training camp practices.
- 26:55Speaker 3: I know, which the collective media is not allowed to do.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Right. And teams know this. So they have people that
- 27:02Speaker 2: are on the payroll whose job it is to monitor
- 27:05Speaker 2: and scan the Internet. to watch for these things and
- 27:08Speaker 2: gather intel on other teams. Does Seahawks do it? Every
- 27:11Speaker 2: team does it. In fact, and now I know the
- 27:14Speaker 2: context as to why McDonald does this, but since McDonald
- 27:17Speaker 2: became the Seahawks coach in 2024, the team has restricted
- 27:22Speaker 2: fans from using their phones, pointing at the practice field
- 27:25Speaker 2: during the open practices of training camp. Fans can record
- 27:29Speaker 2: the initial portions of practice, and that's it. Then they
- 27:32Speaker 2: make an announcement, hey, to protect our team, Protect our
- 27:36Speaker 2: Super Bowl champions. Put away your phones. Nothing pointed at
- 27:39Speaker 2: the field for now for the rest of practice. And
- 27:41Speaker 2: it's at that point in practice that they then line
- 27:43Speaker 2: up in formations and they start scrimmaging.
- 27:46Speaker 4: Right.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Team employees are actually looking into the crowd. And I've
- 27:49Speaker 2: seen them go up into the crowd onto the berm
- 27:51Speaker 2: and tell people to put their phone away or you're gone.
- 27:54Speaker 4: That happened to me at the U.S. Open when it
- 27:56Speaker 4: was down at– Chambers Bay, right?
- 27:58Speaker 3: Chambers Bay.
- 27:59Speaker 4: And I didn't– I was just taking a picture and
- 28:01Speaker 4: I got– like yelled at. And I know at Augusta, no,
- 28:06Speaker 4: you cannot even have a phone in there.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:08Speaker 4: And I've been to several comedy shows with big acts
- 28:12Speaker 4: and they put your phone in phone jail when you
- 28:15Speaker 4: go in a lot of people. And I think that's
- 28:17Speaker 4: going to be the future of it is that you
- 28:19Speaker 4: just can't even bring your phone in.
- 28:21Speaker 2: So McDonald, what he did, what he said he did
- 28:25Speaker 2: and what Sean Payton got all bent out of shape
- 28:27Speaker 2: about is not Spygate. It's not what the, Patriots were
- 28:31Speaker 2: caught doing.
- 28:31Speaker 3: It was out there for the public.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Spygate was when the Patriots had employees in closed
- 28:35Speaker 2: practices filming the Bengals and whatnot. It wasn't that, and
- 28:39Speaker 2: it wasn't Michigan with the assistant coach who was sitting
- 28:42Speaker 2: on the other side stealing signs, and that wasn't publicly
- 28:45Speaker 2: open source material either. Now, you could say it's a
- 28:48Speaker 2: little bit of dirty pool to take something off the
- 28:52Speaker 2: internet and scout your teams with it, but it is
- 28:55Speaker 2: out there. I mean, you and I could do it
- 28:56Speaker 2: if we wanted to cultivate what the Washington Commanders training
- 29:00Speaker 2: camp practices looked like this week before the Seahawks played them.
- 29:03Speaker 2: And don't you think the Seahawks haven't done that? They've
- 29:05Speaker 2: got some footage from fans from Washington Commanders training camp
- 29:09Speaker 2: that they might be going over a little bit. It's
- 29:11Speaker 2: all about chasing edges, right? And McDonald talks about it
- 29:14Speaker 2: all the time. And this is absolutely an edge. This
- 29:17Speaker 2: is a chasing of an edge that, okay, let's see
- 29:20Speaker 2: if we can gain any kind of competitive advantage by
- 29:23Speaker 2: looking at the formations that fans have broadcast. So apparently
- 29:26Speaker 2: Sean Payton in the Broncos that year didn't prohibit fans
- 29:30Speaker 2: from filming formations in the part of practice that was scrimmaging.
- 29:34Speaker 2: I bet they do now.
- 29:35Speaker 4: Well, I was just going to say, I think Mike
- 29:36Speaker 4: McDonald saw it and then was like, okay, well.
- 29:40Speaker 3: None of that here.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Yes.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Because he was already using it.
- 29:44Speaker 2: The crackdown became more harsh years two and three training
- 29:48Speaker 2: camps than in year one. Year one, it was, I
- 29:52Speaker 2: can't even remember what the restriction was, but it came
- 29:54Speaker 2: much more over the top and clear in a I mean,
- 29:58Speaker 2: just spelled out blatantly that you can't do it. And
- 30:01Speaker 2: most fans are cool with it, but there are a
- 30:03Speaker 2: few that every practice they go into the crowd and
- 30:05Speaker 2: start saying, hey, cut that out. You can't do that.
- 30:08Speaker 3: I mean, it's not that hard to see someone holding
- 30:10Speaker 3: up a phone.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Right.
- 30:12Speaker 2: And it's on the grass permanent. They're like 50 feet
- 30:14Speaker 2: or less away. So that's the issue at play here.
- 30:18Speaker 2: So did what he do, was it that bad? No.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Especially a coach in Sean Payton that is yelling about
- 30:27Speaker 2: bounty gate the bounty gate coach is yelling about the
- 30:31Speaker 2: Seahawks doing open source stuff remember Sean Payton and the
- 30:33Speaker 2: Saints were paying players to knock player other opponents out
- 30:37Speaker 2: of the game and the NFL Greg Williams the defensive
- 30:40Speaker 2: coordinator for the Saints at the time got in big
- 30:43Speaker 2: trouble for that Sean Payton was the coach for that
- 30:46Speaker 2: so a little bit of pot calling the kettle black
- 30:48Speaker 2: but it's not at all the same even to that
- 30:51Speaker 2: situation because of the open source nature there but it
- 30:53Speaker 2: does it is an insight into how Mike McDonald at quote,
- 30:56Speaker 2: chases edges, right? And that was definitely a chase edge there. Ultimately,
- 31:01Speaker 2: I see it. I'm reading it on the text line. Ultimately, yes,
- 31:04Speaker 2: it's not a big deal, but it is interesting. It's
- 31:06Speaker 2: an insight to, one, journalism ethics and who applies them
- 31:09Speaker 2: and who doesn't. It is absolutely a lesson for Mike
- 31:12Speaker 2: McDonald on, hey, if cameras are rolling, I'm not talking
- 31:15Speaker 2: about something I don't want out there because I thought
- 31:17Speaker 2: this was off the record and all that. It doesn't matter.
- 31:20Speaker 2: And that's a lesson Mike McDonald just learned. But the
- 31:23Speaker 2: actual act is, to me, not a big deal. and
- 31:27Speaker 2: it'll be something for everyone to talk about before week
- 31:30Speaker 2: six when the Seahawks and Broncos play. Thankfully, that'll be
- 31:32Speaker 2: a shorter week, Thursday game after a Sunday game, so
- 31:35Speaker 2: the circus will be limited. Yeah. Anyway, Sean Payton's Broncos
- 31:40Speaker 2: are hosting the Los Angeles Rams in the Sunday night
- 31:43Speaker 2: game this week. You can hear that live on 93.3
- 31:45Speaker 2: KJFM at 515 on Sunday night. That's after the Seahawks
- 31:49Speaker 2: play at the Commanders.
- 31:50Speaker 3: 10 a.m. Join me at the muckle shoot.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Jessamyn McIntyre and her visiting away games. I should say
- 31:57Speaker 2: the Seahawks away games host at Michael shoot casino down
- 31:59Speaker 2: in Auburn. Is Thomas Rawls going to be there every week?
- 32:03Speaker 4: Yep. Yeah.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Every away game.
- 32:05Speaker 7: Yes.
- 32:06Speaker 4: Yeah, he is all energy, and I had said this
- 32:09Speaker 4: earlier when we were talking about it, but if you
- 32:12Speaker 4: go to an event and a professional athlete is there,
- 32:16Speaker 4: it is very rare that you actually get to spend
- 32:18Speaker 4: time with them. Thomas gets out there and spends time
- 32:21Speaker 4: with everyone. So it is super fun, and we're doing
- 32:25Speaker 4: Pajama Party this Sunday because.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Of the 10 a.m.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Kickoff. He lives out here, right? Yeah.
- 32:30Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 32:31Speaker 4: He made his home here, which a lot of athletes
- 32:33Speaker 4: do after they're done playing. And, yeah, he's fantastic, and
- 32:37Speaker 4: he just gets so hyped up by the crowd, and
- 32:39Speaker 4: the crowd gets hyped up for him.
- 32:41Speaker 3: It's really fun.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Join Jessamyn McIntyre, if you want to, if you're in
- 32:47Speaker 2: the South End especially, at Auburn Muckleshoot Casino. 10 a.m.

- 32:54Speaker 2: in Landover, Maryland, covering it for the News Tribune up next.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Jackson Smith and Jigby, how did he get so open
- 32:59Speaker 2: on that 82-yard touchdown catch in the second play at Arizona?
- 33:03Speaker 2: And why does he continue to get open despite double
- 33:05Speaker 2: teams all over the field for him?
- 33:08Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Teams are just devoting two guys to him. As Mike
- 33:11Speaker 2: McDonald said after the game, he can't put three on him.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Or maybe that's next.
- 33:15Speaker 8: Right.
- 33:16Speaker 2: You'll hear from Jackson Smith and Jigby, and we'll talk
- 33:18Speaker 2: about how he gets so open next. 11 o'clock, the
- 33:20Speaker 2: Washington Commanders play-by-play guy for the radio network to talk
- 33:23Speaker 2: about the Commanders side of this Seahawks-Commanders matchup. 11.35, Factor Fiction.
- 33:27Speaker 2: your chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino

- 33:33Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back to Seahawks headquarters at Virginia Mason
- 33:57Speaker 2: Athletic Center. Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre back downtown Seattle at
- 34:00Speaker 2: Elliott Bay on 93.3 KJR FM, 11 o'clock. Grant Weinstein,
- 34:06Speaker 2: he's the radio play-by-play announcer for the Washington Commanders to
- 34:09Speaker 2: talk about the Seahawks opponent this week and the fact
- 34:11Speaker 2: that Marcus Mariota is going to start a quarterback, the
- 34:14Speaker 2: veteran 33-year-old, instead of Jaden Daniels, dislocated his left elbow.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Dan Quinn saying yesterday he won't play. So Seahawks get
- 34:22Speaker 2: a backup quarterback. against the 0-2 Commanders against the 2-0
- 34:26Speaker 2: Seahawks at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Again, if you're around,
- 34:30Speaker 2: Jessamyn McIntyre is going to be down at the Muckleshoot
- 34:33Speaker 2: Casino in Auburn hosting a watch party with Thomas Rawls,
- 34:37Speaker 2: the former Seahawks.
- 34:38Speaker 3: Great prizes, by the way.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Prizes?
- 34:40Speaker 3: What kind of prizes?
- 34:41Speaker 4: Yes. Okay, so before the game, they have Lazy Boys
- 34:44Speaker 4: that are sitting in the VIP section where Thomas Rawls
- 34:46Speaker 4: and company are hanging out, and you can win two
- 34:50Speaker 4: of those and a table for six. in the VIP section,
- 34:53Speaker 4: but whoever wins can bring their favorite person there with
- 34:57Speaker 4: and sit in the Lazy Boys like you're in your
- 34:59Speaker 4: own living room watching the game with six of your
- 35:02Speaker 4: closest friends. And then at the end of the game,
- 35:05Speaker 4: we do give actually away a set of Lazy Boys
- 35:09Speaker 4: to one lucky winner.
- 35:11Speaker 2: That's Sunday at the Muckleshoot Casino in Auburn for the
- 35:15Speaker 2: Seahawks Watch Party. Seahawks Commanders, 10 a.m. on Sunday. Jackson
- 35:19Speaker 2: Smith and Jacob, second play at Arizona. We saw him
- 35:21Speaker 2: put the head fake to the outside. It was a
- 35:23Speaker 2: called out-and-up route that Brian Fleury, the offensive coordinator, put
- 35:27Speaker 2: in for that play, and he was assuming that Will Johnson,
- 35:30Speaker 2: the left corner for the Cardinals, would do exactly what
- 35:33Speaker 2: he did, which is bite hard and overcommit to the out.
- 35:37Speaker 2: But Smith and Jigba was so good with the head fake,
- 35:40Speaker 2: he didn't even have to run a route to the outside.
- 35:42Speaker 2: It was supposed to be an out-and-up. It became a
- 35:44Speaker 2: head-and-up because he didn't even take a step outside. He
- 35:48Speaker 2: just moved his head and shoulders that way. And Will
- 35:50Speaker 2: Johnson bit on it like he was trying to jump
- 35:52Speaker 2: the out route for a pick six.
- 35:54Speaker 3: That's just amazing body work.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Right. That was Doug Baldwin-esque. And Johnson was five yards
- 36:00Speaker 2: out of the play. Smith and Jigba just run straight
- 36:03Speaker 2: down the field. He runs with such– he had such
- 36:06Speaker 2: a head of steam for not having to do the
- 36:07Speaker 2: out route part of it, the steps to the outside,
- 36:10Speaker 2: that he got upfield so quickly that Buda Baker, the
- 36:13Speaker 2: former Bellevue High School and University of Washington star safety–
- 36:17Speaker 2: Was flat-footed. He didn't expect Smith and Jigba to run
- 36:19Speaker 2: an out-and-up that quickly because there was no out to
- 36:22Speaker 2: the out-and-up because of how Will Johnson bit for the
- 36:24Speaker 2: head fake. And that's how Smith and Jigba got five
- 36:27Speaker 2: yards clear of Buda Baker. Drew Locke waited until he
- 36:30Speaker 2: cleared Baker and then threw it for an 82-yard touchdown.
- 36:33Speaker 2: That's the longest touchdown in the NFL so far this season.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Jackson Smith and Jigba, 1,793 yards, an All-Pro last year
- 36:40Speaker 2: as the NFL Offensive Player of the Year, the lead
- 36:42Speaker 2: of the league, the eighth-best receiving seed in NFL history.
- 36:44Speaker 2: This year he's already leading the league again. in yards
- 36:47Speaker 2: and he's fourth touchdown, four touchdowns through two games is
- 36:49Speaker 2: also tied for the league. This was him after the
- 36:51Speaker 2: game in Arizona Sunday. It's been a minute.
- 36:56Speaker 9: Um, just, just opportunities and just executing, uh, drew finding
- 37:02Speaker 9: me doing a good job. Um, it takes all of us,
- 37:04Speaker 9: takes the whole team, um, to the offensive line, to, um,
- 37:09Speaker 9: Cooper cup doing his job, Rashid doing his job and,
- 37:12Speaker 9: you know, just execution at the end of the day. So, um,
- 37:15Speaker 9: super happy, uh, with how we went out there and
- 37:17Speaker 9: fought for four quarters. We're a four-quarter team. That's just
- 37:20Speaker 9: who we are, and to God be the glory for
- 37:23Speaker 9: this one.
- 37:25Speaker 8: You and Drew haven't played a lot together, but you've
- 37:27Speaker 8: had a lot of success.
- 37:28Speaker 2: I think it's five touchdowns now. What is it that
- 37:31Speaker 2: works between you two?
- 37:32Speaker 9: Man, man, it's hard to. to break it down, but
- 37:39Speaker 9: I mean, I think it's just something special. I mean, Drew,
- 37:42Speaker 9: he's a, he is a special talent and sees the
- 37:44Speaker 9: field very well and can make any throw. And I
- 37:47Speaker 9: know he's looking for me and, um, I just want
- 37:49Speaker 9: to be there for him. And we we've been having
- 37:52Speaker 9: a special connection for, for a minute now, but I'm,
- 37:54Speaker 9: I'm super happy the way he just came in and, um,
- 37:57Speaker 9: carried himself and carry this team. And, uh, it shows
- 38:01Speaker 9: time and time again, you know, how, how good he is.
- 38:04Speaker 2: What happened?
- 38:04Speaker 1: Can you walk us through the first touchdown and how
- 38:07Speaker 1: wide open you were?
- 38:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:09Speaker 9: Um, double move, um, double move, fake the out, you know,
- 38:14Speaker 9: the corner bit. I got to watch the film. I
- 38:16Speaker 9: don't know if they're in cover four or cover two. Um,
- 38:19Speaker 9: but got a wide open look and, um, just, just ran.
- 38:24Speaker 2: An end zone.
- 38:28Speaker 9: Oh man, that's, that's my hooping skills right there. That's
- 38:31Speaker 9: my hooping skills since, uh, since a jit, they say.
- 38:36Speaker 2: It seems like Drew just kind of extends his arm
- 38:38Speaker 2: and flicks the wrist and it just is kind of effortless.
- 38:40Speaker 2: I'm wondering how you kind of, how would you describe
- 38:42Speaker 2: his ball and just.
- 38:43Speaker 10: What it's like to catch it and how it's maybe
- 38:45Speaker 10: different from other guys?
- 38:46Speaker 9: Yeah, I think, like you said, he can make any throw.
- 38:51Speaker 9: You know, he's just a ball player and a playmaker.
- 38:53Speaker 9: You know, he's going to get it done however, you know,
- 38:56Speaker 9: whatever arm angle he has to do, whatever he has
- 38:58Speaker 9: to do, we know he's going to get the job done.
- 39:01Speaker 2: So, yeah, super happy. twos with us.
- 39:05Speaker 8: You guys pulled away 24-0 in the second half.
- 39:08Speaker 2: What changed?
- 39:09Speaker 9: We're a four-quarter team and we want to start fast
- 39:12Speaker 9: and we want to control. We want to weather the storm,
- 39:15Speaker 9: but we know that we're going to play hard for
- 39:19Speaker 9: four quarters and a lot of teams don't want to
- 39:21Speaker 9: do that. So that's just who we are and what
- 39:24Speaker 9: we come out and try to prove every game.
- 39:26Speaker 10: If you go back to the first drive, first quarter
- 39:29Speaker 10: when drew came in for sam and just kind of
- 39:32Speaker 10: the war about him in the huddle and what have
- 39:35Speaker 10: you and then now he's had this time to practice
- 39:37Speaker 10: be with you guys compared to like the third quarter
- 39:41Speaker 10: fourth quarter of of today do you see any difference
- 39:44Speaker 10: or any evolution from that.
- 39:46Speaker 9: Regard yeah i mean the more reps you get um
- 39:49Speaker 9: i think This week of practice definitely got us ready,
- 39:56Speaker 9: and we knew what to expect with Drew. He always
- 40:00Speaker 9: prepares like the one, but I'm sure it is a
- 40:02Speaker 9: little different coming into the week, knowing for sure you're
- 40:05Speaker 9: the one. I think we attacked the week. He attacked
- 40:08Speaker 9: the week very well to set us up for great
- 40:10Speaker 9: opportunities and to win. The second touchdown, I thought I
- 40:18Speaker 9: was getting bracketed, and then they went to cover zero,
- 40:20Speaker 9: blitz everybody. I knew I had the one-on-one, and Drew
- 40:24Speaker 9: put it in a great location for me to.
- 40:28Speaker 2: catch the ball.
- 40:29Speaker 9: Jackson, the last time you had three touchdowns in a
- 40:31Speaker 9: game was when you and Marvin were teammates back in college.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been a minute.
- 40:34Speaker 8: Yeah, so when you look back on that, you know,
- 40:36Speaker 8: what was it like being in the zone today to
- 40:38Speaker 8: that level, the same way that you were in that
- 40:40Speaker 8: Rose Bowl game against Utah?
- 40:41Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, it was, it's awesome being in that zone,
- 40:45Speaker 9: putting points up for our team, and, you know, whatever,
- 40:48Speaker 9: whatever it takes to win, you know, I'm willing to
- 40:50Speaker 9: do whatever it takes, and anytime we get opportunities, you know,
- 40:54Speaker 9: we got to execute and, and and put points on
- 40:57Speaker 9: the board.
- 40:57Speaker 2: So with the defense doing what it's doing, is it
- 40:59Speaker 2: easy for you guys to kind of be patient, even
- 41:01Speaker 2: if things aren't coming right away, just knowing they're, they're
- 41:03Speaker 2: keeping it.
- 41:04Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:04Speaker 9: That's like I said, that's kind of who we are.
- 41:06Speaker 9: Like we're, we're going to be patient and, and like
- 41:09Speaker 9: I said, whether the storm, if we have to, we
- 41:11Speaker 9: want to start early. Um, but you know, we know
- 41:14Speaker 9: that we're going to be here for four quarters playing,
- 41:16Speaker 9: you know, as hard as possible. And, um, you know,
- 41:19Speaker 9: that's what gives us, gives me, and I, and I believe,
- 41:22Speaker 9: This team, the confidence just to know we're going to
- 41:25Speaker 9: go out there and win and do whatever it takes.
- 41:27Speaker 10: You were an X receiver a lot in the first,
- 41:29Speaker 10: and you're getting clouded a lot. Were you thinking, hey,
- 41:32Speaker 10: let me get on the other side where I can,
- 41:34Speaker 10: like on the third touchdown? Were you feeling like, okay,
- 41:37Speaker 10: I'm doing my job, they're over the top of me,
- 41:39Speaker 10: but were you getting antsy to maybe get somewhere else?
- 41:42Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, I said do it. It takes some intelligence,
- 41:46Speaker 9: and it takes guys who are capable of doing it,
- 41:48Speaker 9: and we have that in the room.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you. Jackson Smith and Jigba after the
- 41:53Speaker 2: game on Sunday, his latest 100-yard game. He's had 15
- 41:56Speaker 2: career 100-yard receiving games. 14 of them have come since
- 42:00Speaker 2: the beginning of last season. The three touchdowns that you
- 42:04Speaker 2: heard Andrew Destin of Athletic talking about the last time
- 42:06Speaker 2: he had three touchdowns when Marvin Harrison was his teammate
- 42:09Speaker 2: at Ohio State. That was the Rose Bowl of the
- 42:12Speaker 2: second to last year in college for Jackson Smith and Jigba.
- 42:15Speaker 2: He had 347 yards and three touchdowns for Ohio State
- 42:18Speaker 2: in the Rose Bowl. And that was the game that
- 42:20Speaker 2: got him drafted. You heard at the very end he
- 42:22Speaker 2: credited Brian Fleury for moving him around the formations. The
- 42:25Speaker 2: Cardinals got outcoached there. When Fleury moved Smith and Jigba
- 42:29Speaker 2: to other positions, to the Z receiver as a flanker
- 42:34Speaker 2: to the tight end side, in motion to the inside
- 42:37Speaker 2: right before snap, in motion to the outside right before snap,
- 42:39Speaker 2: the Cardinals did not do shell. They did not do
- 42:42Speaker 2: cloud coverage. They dropped double coverage unless he was an X.
- 42:46Speaker 2: And that was Brian Fleury noticing that the Cardinals weren't
- 42:49Speaker 2: continuing their cloud and shell coverage when he moved him around,
- 42:52Speaker 2: and that's why he did that. That's a little insight
- 42:54Speaker 2: of why he got open for so many yards and
- 42:57Speaker 2: so wide open on Sunday. Bob, next, let's go to Washington,
- 43:01Speaker 2: the nation's capital about the Commanders. They're 0-2, and they
- 43:05Speaker 2: have a backup quarterback playing for them against the Seahawks
- 43:08Speaker 2: on Sunday. Bram Weinstein of the Washington Commanders Radio Network,
- 43:13Speaker 2: the play-by-play guy, is going to join us next on
- 43:14Speaker 2: the Beacon Plumbing Hotline on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 43:18Speaker 1: It's week three of the National Football League, and you're
- 43:21Speaker 1: home for the NFL.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Hi, welcome back to Seahawk Headquarters. Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre
- 43:42Speaker 2: is back at their Elliott Bay Studios in downtown Seattle.
- 43:46Speaker 2: The Seahawks are going to be flying from here in
- 43:48Speaker 2: Renton out of SeaTac on Saturday, Friday actually, for the
- 43:52Speaker 2: East Coast game. They leave two days early. They play
- 43:55Speaker 2: Sunday in Landover, Maryland, where they played last November. Jaden
- 43:59Speaker 2: Daniels got injured that night, the Washington quarterback. Marcus Mariota
- 44:04Speaker 2: came in. Jaden Daniels got injured last weekend in Dallas.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Marcus Mariota is coming in. It looks like Mariota is
- 44:12Speaker 2: going to start on Sunday. The guy who knows all
- 44:14Speaker 2: about this, if in fact it's a sure thing that
- 44:17Speaker 2: Mariota is starting, is on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline right now.
- 44:21Speaker 2: Bram Weinstein is the play-by-play announcer for the Washington Commanders
- 44:24Speaker 2: Radio Network, and he joins us from the nation's capital area.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Good morning, good afternoon to you, sir.
- 44:31Speaker 5: Thanks for the reminders of the terrible moments of last
- 44:34Speaker 5: week and last year.
- 44:35Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Terrible. Very hospitable of me, of course. Bram, I've seen
- 44:42Speaker 2: a couple conflicting things. Well, it looks like Mario is
- 44:46Speaker 2: going to start. Jane Janel is not expected to play.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Correct me if I'm wrong, though. Dan Quinn has already
- 44:51Speaker 2: come out and said that Marcus Mario is starting on Sunday, correct?
- 44:55Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:56Speaker 5: He's starting Sunday. And then the team goes to London
- 45:00Speaker 5: next week to play an international game. So I doubt
- 45:04Speaker 5: he's playing at least the next two weeks. And frankly,
- 45:07Speaker 5: we don't know how long he's going to be out
- 45:08Speaker 5: because he's been seeing a number of specialists. And we'll
- 45:11Speaker 5: have more information by the end of the week about
- 45:13Speaker 5: what they're thinking about with timelines or procedures or not
- 45:17Speaker 5: procedures or braces or not wearing braces. We don't know.
- 45:21Speaker 5: So we're kind of waiting. But we do know he's
- 45:23Speaker 5: not playing Sunday against the Seahawks.
- 45:25Speaker 2: We have talked a lot about backup quarterbacks out here
- 45:27Speaker 2: in Seattle, of course, already this season because the Seahawks
- 45:30Speaker 2: lost Sam Donald five plays into the season, and Drew Locke,
- 45:33Speaker 2: the veteran backup eight-year pro, has had to play the
- 45:35Speaker 2: last two games. What kind of asset do the commanders
- 45:38Speaker 2: have in Marcus Mariota with the 33-year-old's experience in just
- 45:42Speaker 2: about every situation as a starter and backup for so
- 45:45Speaker 2: many systems against so many opponents?
- 45:49Speaker 5: You know, the experience of the leadership have been on
- 45:52Speaker 5: display here. He's been an incredible mentor and guide for
- 45:55Speaker 5: Jaden for the first couple of years. And he does
- 45:59Speaker 5: have a wealth of experience. And he's performed pretty well
- 46:02Speaker 5: for this team. He's had to play a lot, obviously,
- 46:04Speaker 5: the last couple of years. Keep in mind, though, this
- 46:07Speaker 5: year is a little bit different. They changed offensive coordinators,
- 46:12Speaker 5: so this is a different system that they're running this year.
- 46:15Speaker 4: And.
- 46:16Speaker 5: Mariota got injured in the first series of the first
- 46:19Speaker 5: preseason game and didn't practice in training camp for about
- 46:23Speaker 5: three to four weeks. And there was a question of
- 46:26Speaker 5: whether they were going to sign another quarterback just to
- 46:28Speaker 5: be ready for week one to have a veteran behind
- 46:31Speaker 5: Jaden because they have a rookie seventh-round pick who's performed
- 46:35Speaker 5: pretty well, but they don't feel like he's ready to
- 46:37Speaker 5: be elevated to a number two if necessary yet. So,
- 46:42Speaker 5: you know, Mariota hasn't had a lot of time practicing
- 46:44Speaker 5: this new system. But this week's a big week for him.
- 46:48Speaker 5: The leadership's been there, and frankly, he's performed very well.
- 46:51Speaker 5: Teammates love him. They rally around him. You know, what's
- 46:54Speaker 5: happening in front of him is another story, too. So
- 46:58Speaker 5: this is a difficult spot, obviously, for him and the team.
- 47:02Speaker 5: But he's done this already, as you noted. And so
- 47:04Speaker 5: we'll see how he performs this weekend.
- 47:06Speaker 2: When we talked yesterday to Jory Epstein of Yahoo Sports,
- 47:09Speaker 2: he talked about being at the Commander's Training Camp and
- 47:12Speaker 2: talking to new offensive coordinator, David Blau and his commitment
- 47:16Speaker 2: to the run there. And they've got the lead back, Mr.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Corey Crosby-Mair. They've got Rashad White, the former Buccaneers lead back,
- 47:23Speaker 2: who as a rookie ripped up the Seahawks in Munich
- 47:25Speaker 2: a few years ago. But you mentioned the offensive line
- 47:28Speaker 2: and its issues. How has David Blau's commitment to the run,
- 47:31Speaker 2: do you think, taken hold? And do you see him
- 47:34Speaker 2: now even going more toward the run? Do you see
- 47:36Speaker 2: Rashad White getting more than the 14 carries?
- 47:39Speaker 5: It's hard to tell at this point what this offense
- 47:42Speaker 5: is going to be about. They made, like, the change
- 47:46Speaker 5: in the offense was somewhat around trying to take some
- 47:50Speaker 5: of the weight off Jake Daniels and not have him
- 47:53Speaker 5: be Superman all the time. Some of it also was
- 47:56Speaker 5: to protect him off of what happened a year ago.
- 47:59Speaker 5: And I think this is what's so disappointing about what
- 48:01Speaker 5: happened in Dallas is that was really flukish what happened.
- 48:04Speaker 5: He had stepped on coming out of a snap and
- 48:07Speaker 5: just trying to brace a ball, and all of a
- 48:09Speaker 5: sudden he dislocates his elbow again. So it didn't even
- 48:11Speaker 5: come after a hit. So of all this, you know,
- 48:14Speaker 5: well-intentioned changes that the team made, he got hurt anyway. But,
- 48:18Speaker 5: you know, these are all the plans that they had.
- 48:20Speaker 5: The idea was Jaden is not going to scramble as much.
- 48:23Speaker 5: Jaden is going to be a pro first quarterback. They're
- 48:26Speaker 5: going to get him under center to hopefully unleash a
- 48:28Speaker 5: downfield passing game. And now that he's hurt again, it's
- 48:31Speaker 5: kind of hard to know where they're going to go.
- 48:33Speaker 5: And frankly, in the first couple of weeks, They were
- 48:36Speaker 5: down double digits in the first half against both teams.
- 48:40Speaker 5: And all of a sudden, the offense looked a heck
- 48:42Speaker 5: of a lot like it did under Cliff Kingsbury, where
- 48:44Speaker 5: he's in the gun all the time. They're going up tempo.
- 48:47Speaker 5: He rushed for 70 yards in the first half, not
- 48:50Speaker 5: on design plays, but scrambles. So it felt a lot
- 48:54Speaker 5: more akin to what we saw the first couple of years.
- 48:57Speaker 5: So it's hard to answer that question. And moving forward,
- 49:00Speaker 5: it's even harder because I don't know how they're going
- 49:01Speaker 5: to think about it with Mariota under center.
- 49:04Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Tell us, Brant Weinstein, the Washington Commanders, play-by-play voice of
- 49:09Speaker 2: the radio network there, talking to us on the Beacon
- 49:11Speaker 2: Plumbing Hotline from the D.C. area, the Beltway. Tell us
- 49:14Speaker 2: about the running back situation, because on paper it would
- 49:16Speaker 2: seem to me Rashad White, the more experienced back... the
- 49:19Speaker 2: former Tampa Bay lead back, could be the number one
- 49:23Speaker 2: there in Washington, but it's Ja'Cory Crosby-Merritt, second-year guy, seventh-round
- 49:27Speaker 2: pick a couple years ago for Washington. He went to
- 49:29Speaker 2: three schools in college, Alabama State, New Mexico, and Arizona.
- 49:33Speaker 2: Is he the clear number one? Could you see White
- 49:35Speaker 2: eventually taking over, maybe doing a shared 101A there?
- 49:40Speaker 5: Well, it's 1-1A, but White does not have the explosion
- 49:44Speaker 5: of Krosny there. He is by far, and not close,
- 49:49Speaker 5: the most explosive running back, specifically running between the tackles.
- 49:54Speaker 5: He is not a finished product. He doesn't catch the
- 49:57Speaker 5: ball out of the backfield like White does. And they've
- 49:59Speaker 5: been working on him to become a more well-rounded running
- 50:01Speaker 5: back in pass protection. But when it comes to just
- 50:04Speaker 5: being a pure running back and running the ball, He's
- 50:07Speaker 5: an explosive, explosive player. Go look at his numbers from
- 50:10Speaker 5: a year ago where he played, I don't know, 40%
- 50:13Speaker 5: to 50% of his team's stats, and he had 800
- 50:18Speaker 5: yards watching eight touchdowns. I think if he develops, he
- 50:24Speaker 5: could end up being a very, very good number one.
- 50:28Speaker 5: And White was brought in really mainly to be kind
- 50:30Speaker 5: of 1A and the third down back. His real great
- 50:34Speaker 5: trait is the screen game. That is something that Washington's
- 50:37Speaker 5: been trying to find an answer to since an injury
- 50:39Speaker 5: to Austin Eckler last year. And so I still think
- 50:42Speaker 5: the lead back is Kosti Merritt, and I don't even
- 50:45Speaker 5: think it's really close, actually.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Okay, thank you for that. Brad Weinstein, play-by-play announcer for
- 50:50Speaker 2: the Washington Commanders, joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline
- 50:52Speaker 2: before the Seahawks head to Landover, Maryland, and play the
- 50:55Speaker 2: Washington Commanders 0-2, Seahawks 2-0, Sunday, 10 a.m., Bram, how
- 51:01Speaker 2: is Dan Quinn handling this? He had a meteoric start
- 51:04Speaker 2: with Washington. Gets him to within one game of the
- 51:07Speaker 2: Super Bowl. They lose the NFC Championship game two seasons
- 51:09Speaker 2: ago at Philadelphia. Then the sub-500 season, losing their franchise
- 51:13Speaker 2: quarterback last year. And now an 0-2 start here. How
- 51:17Speaker 2: have you noticed him handling this, weathering this, and anything
- 51:19Speaker 2: different about him?
- 51:22Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been tough. I think it's the injuries, really,
- 51:25Speaker 5: that has everybody kind of down. I mean, like... The
- 51:29Speaker 5: schedule is at Philly, at Dallas. We've been talking for months, like, oh,
- 51:35Speaker 5: you know what? Even in the best of circumstances, you
- 51:39Speaker 5: could end up 0-2 in that situation with Seattle coming in.
- 51:43Speaker 5: The schedule being as hard as it was, was a
- 51:46Speaker 5: massive storyline coming in, and then throw in their best
- 51:50Speaker 5: offensive lineman gets hurt in camp. Their quarterback gets hurt
- 51:53Speaker 5: in Week 2. One of their depth and potential starters
- 51:57Speaker 5: down the road on the defensive line, he got hurt.
- 51:59Speaker 5: He's out for at least half the year. So they've
- 52:02Speaker 5: been hit with the injury bug. Last year's kind of
- 52:05Speaker 5: a long story. So they go 12-5. It was a surprise.
- 52:09Speaker 5: It was lightning in a bottle. James Daniels had, I
- 52:12Speaker 5: would argue, the best season any rookie quarterback has ever had.
- 52:16Speaker 5: This team had not won two road playoff games in
- 52:19Speaker 5: any single postseason ever until that year. But they were
- 52:23Speaker 5: an older, older team. And, you know, the free agency
- 52:26Speaker 5: class wasn't exactly what they needed or wanted. And so
- 52:30Speaker 5: they chose to run it back. The oldest team in
- 52:32Speaker 5: the league. And then they were just beset by injuries
- 52:36Speaker 5: across the board. They were the most injured team in
- 52:38Speaker 5: the NFL, including the quarterback who played seven games and
- 52:41Speaker 5: only finished four of them. So, you know, they lost him.
- 52:45Speaker 5: They lost Terry McLaurin for the majority of the season.
- 52:48Speaker 5: They lost their four best defensive ends. Like, it was...
- 52:52Speaker 5: They just got riddled with injuries, and that's how it
- 52:55Speaker 5: adds up to 5-12. They turn around. They spend a
- 52:59Speaker 5: ton of money specifically on defense. They bring in a
- 53:02Speaker 5: couple of other offensive weapons, namely Stephon Diggs, Chigurh Conquo,
- 53:06Speaker 5: and everything at camp is looking pretty good. You know,
- 53:09Speaker 5: like everything's kind of coming along. They got new systems
- 53:11Speaker 5: coming along, and the injuries just started happening immediately. And
- 53:16Speaker 5: so none of us were, like, sweating that they lost
- 53:18Speaker 5: in Philadelphia in Week 1 in a close game they
- 53:20Speaker 5: easily could have won. But now, 0-2, and staring down
- 53:25Speaker 5: the prospect of, we don't know how long Jay's going
- 53:27Speaker 5: to be out, with injuries riddled across the offensive line suddenly,
- 53:32Speaker 5: and one of their starting safeties is out for who
- 53:34Speaker 5: knows how long he has an internal injury. Like, it's really,
- 53:38Speaker 5: they have been bit by the injury bug like a
- 53:41Speaker 5: team I haven't seen in a while, and it's adding
- 53:44Speaker 5: up to, because we have a brutal six, eight weeks here,
- 53:47Speaker 5: they're going to have to cobble something together and kind
- 53:51Speaker 5: of steal a couple of games one way or the other. Otherwise,
- 53:54Speaker 5: this season, they're going to be a giant hole by
- 53:56Speaker 5: the time that Jaden's able to come back.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Bram, you had Bobby Wagner there for a couple seasons
- 54:03Speaker 2: with Dan Quinn, his old Seahawks defensive coordinator from the
- 54:06Speaker 2: first Super Bowl years of the Legion of Boom days.
- 54:09Speaker 2: What was the Bobby Wagner experience there for you and
- 54:11Speaker 2: those around the commanders? And we know him out in
- 54:14Speaker 2: Seattle and what a huge pillar he was in the
- 54:16Speaker 2: community and the locker room, a legend, a Hall of Famer.
- 54:19Speaker 2: What was Bobby Wagner like for the commanders and the
- 54:22Speaker 2: community there?
- 54:24Speaker 8: He was awesome.
- 54:26Speaker 5: He was a leader. You know, you see why he's
- 54:30Speaker 5: going to end up in the Hall of Fame. The
- 54:32Speaker 5: preparation there, even at his age. You know, his age
- 54:35Speaker 5: caught up to him with his speed. I think that's
- 54:37Speaker 5: probably the biggest reason why he's not playing right now is,
- 54:43Speaker 5: you know, the speed has gone a little bit from him.
- 54:45Speaker 5: And he was getting picked on in the passing game
- 54:48Speaker 5: specifically when they could match up a running back on him.
- 54:51Speaker 5: It became a problem a year ago. But from a
- 54:54Speaker 5: leadership perspective, fantastic. He had basically befriended Jaden Lillard. They
- 55:00Speaker 5: were the first in the building together in that rookie year.
- 55:03Speaker 5: Jaden will credit a lot of mentorship to him as
- 55:07Speaker 5: part of the reason why he had the season he
- 55:09Speaker 5: had as a rookie. You know, I don't know what
- 55:13Speaker 5: he's going to do with his post-football career. I think
- 55:16Speaker 5: he could do just about anything. I think he could
- 55:17Speaker 5: be a politician if he wanted to be. I think
- 55:19Speaker 5: he could be a coach. I think he could be
- 55:20Speaker 5: a business leader. It seems like that's the direction he's going.
- 55:23Speaker 5: I know he's in sports ownership now. He was really
- 55:27Speaker 5: fantastic defensively. In a situation like this, what's going on
- 55:30Speaker 5: early in the year, I wish he was around, frankly,
- 55:34Speaker 5: because I think they need some calming voices right now
- 55:37Speaker 5: because this one feels like, oh, my God, here we
- 55:40Speaker 5: go again with all the injuries.
- 55:43Speaker 2: Bram Weinstein, the radio play-by-play guy for the Washington Commanders,
- 55:46Speaker 2: kind enough to join us. Thank you, sir. I know
- 55:48Speaker 2: you're busy back there on the East Coast, and it's
- 55:49Speaker 2: the middle of the afternoon of a game week for you.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Enjoy the call. I'll be in the stadium with you
- 55:54Speaker 2: on Sunday. Thanks for joining us.
- 55:57Speaker 5: All right, have a nice flight out east. Appreciate it.
- 55:59Speaker 2: I shall. Thank you. Bram Weinstein, Washington Commanders, play-by-play guy. Man, Jessamyn,
- 56:05Speaker 2: he makes it sound like the Commanders are in all
- 56:08Speaker 2: kinds of straits right now. I should have told him
- 56:11Speaker 2: to tell Dan Quinn that Jessamyn McIntyre says hi, her
- 56:14Speaker 2: old friend. And Jessamyn's father, of course, used to coach
- 56:18Speaker 2: with Dan Quinn. But, yeah, you heard Bram talk about
- 56:22Speaker 2: Marcus Mariota starting for the indefinite future. about how they knew,
- 56:27Speaker 2: the commanders knew the schedule was tough coming into this,
- 56:30Speaker 2: and now they've had problems at both their offensive line,
- 56:33Speaker 2: they lose their starting center, they lose their starting quarterback,
- 56:36Speaker 2: and this new offense that David Blau is trying to
- 56:38Speaker 2: put in as the first-year offensive coordinator has not really
- 56:42Speaker 2: taken hold because two of the main cogs of it
- 56:44Speaker 2: are missing. And these are injuries they've had for two
- 56:47Speaker 2: seasons now, and.
- 56:51Speaker 2: This really tells me that they could start Drew Locke
- 56:54Speaker 2: on Sunday and should be able to win this game
- 56:55Speaker 2: the way it sounds like the commanders are in right now.
- 56:57Speaker 4: I mean, and that's someone who is the voice of
- 56:59Speaker 4: the team, right? So, I mean, he did not sugarcoat
- 57:03Speaker 4: anything that they're dealing with right now. I just don't
- 57:06Speaker 4: think that they're going to have a good time. on Sunday,
- 57:09Speaker 4: especially with the way the Seahawks have started, the way
- 57:12Speaker 4: that they played with Drew Locke at.
- 57:13Speaker 3: The helm and didn't really miss a beat at all.
- 57:17Speaker 2: But this league is so, the margin is so thin
- 57:19Speaker 2: that all it would take would be a turnover in
- 57:22Speaker 2: Seattle's own end or an injury or what have you.
- 57:26Speaker 2: There can always be some pivotal development that can change
- 57:30Speaker 2: a game that should be lopsided or you would think
- 57:32Speaker 2: would be lopsided into an upset. But we've talked about this.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Under Mike McDonald, particularly the last two years, and the
- 57:39Speaker 2: proof's in the pudding of 12 consecutive wins, a franchise record.
- 57:43Speaker 2: They've won, what, 19 of the last 22 games. They're
- 57:47Speaker 2: kind of good. They win games like this. Yeah, they're good.
- 57:50Speaker 2: And they win games. They don't give games away like this.
- 57:52Speaker 2: How many times do we see the Seahawks lose to
- 57:55Speaker 2: Chase Daniel or Colt McCoy, even when some of their
- 57:58Speaker 2: better years under Pete Carroll? Well, Mike McDonald's team does
- 58:01Speaker 2: not do that.
- 58:02Speaker 4: No, and they also grind it out. And I really
- 58:06Speaker 4: like that. So early in the game, you're kind of like,
- 58:09Speaker 4: those second half adjustments.
- 58:12Speaker 2: And the just piling on of physicality and run plays
- 58:18Speaker 2: and defense attacking. And by the third and fourth quarter,
- 58:21Speaker 2: they try to break the will and wear down physically
- 58:23Speaker 2: and mentally the teams. I mean, the Cardinals Sunday looked
- 58:26Speaker 2: like they were done playing in the middle of third quarter.
- 58:29Speaker 2: It looked like they wanted a running clock and get
- 58:33Speaker 2: out of there. they were non-competitive in the second half.
- 58:37Speaker 2: They came 44 yards on 14 plays in the second
- 58:39Speaker 2: half and allowed a 16-play, 10-and-a-half-minute drive from the Seahawks.
- 58:45Speaker 2: Their defense just wilted. And you're right. A lot of
- 58:49Speaker 2: Seahawks games under Mike McDonald start out of, uh-oh, they're
- 58:53Speaker 2: having trouble.
- 58:54Speaker 3: It's just chess. It's chess.
- 58:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:57Speaker 3: He knows how to play.
- 58:58Speaker 2: Yes, he does.
- 59:00Speaker 3: I mean, how impressed are you with Brian Flory as well?
- 59:04Speaker 2: I have been because of the in-game adjustments. Clint Kubiak
- 59:08Speaker 2: was very, very good at playing. designing, play calling, game planning.
- 59:13Speaker 2: We didn't see as many in-game adjustments last year, frankly,
- 59:17Speaker 2: because they didn't have to adjust to much.
- 59:18Speaker 7: Right.
- 59:19Speaker 2: They are adjusting on the fly like the Smith and Jig,
- 59:22Speaker 2: but with the shell coverage, the cloud coverage in Arizona. Okay,
- 59:25Speaker 2: they're going to double team him when he's an X.
- 59:26Speaker 2: Let's kick him out of X. Let's make him a Z.
- 59:29Speaker 2: Let's put him in the slot. Let's put him in
- 59:31Speaker 2: motion and see how the Cardinals react to that. And
- 59:34Speaker 2: they didn't. They didn't move their cloud coverage with Smith
- 59:38Speaker 2: and Jigba. When he wasn't an X, he didn't get
- 59:41Speaker 2: two defenders devoted to him, and the result was 155
- 59:45Speaker 2: yards and three touchdowns. I mean, the second touchdown, you
- 59:47Speaker 2: heard Smith and Jigba in the last segment talk about it.
- 59:50Speaker 2: The second touchdown was a zero blitz with nobody in
- 59:52Speaker 2: the center of the field. There was no cloud coverage there.
- 59:56Speaker 2: It was Smith and Jigba or bust. And they were
- 59:58Speaker 2: counting on getting to the quarterback before Drew Locke could
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: even find Smith and Jigba with nobody in the center
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: of the field. And, of course, he didn't. They didn't.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: And that touchdown. So, yeah, Brian Fleury has been impressive
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: in his in-game adjustments. He's been unimpressive to a lot
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: of people about, for instance, running four plays at first
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: and goal at the one or first and goal at
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: the six and fourth and goal at the one, bringing
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: seven offensive linemen in, including Oluwetimi as a fullback on
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: the play that Emmanuel Wilson got stuffed in the hole.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: so there are some that have issues with some of
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: those play callings, but the adjustment-wise, the players are saying
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: that they're really impressed with the new offensive coordinator. There
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: are only two games in. There'll be challenges, including from
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: San Francisco, primarily in Week 5, but this weekend, Week 3,
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: it would appear is a game the Seahawks should win,
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: and they have won games they should win over the
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: last two seasons. 49451 on the Tacoma Dodge text line.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: Your feelings about the Drew Locke versus Sam Darnold. Do
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: you play Sam Darnold this week? Do you just rest
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: him out of ultra-conservatism because of how Locke is played
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: and because of how defense is playing for Seattle? Your
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: opinions on that. We'll read those back next. Any talkbacks,
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: go to the iHeartRadio app or 933KJR. com. We'll play those
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: back if they're 30 seconds or fewer. Jessamyn loves her talkbacks.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: I do. She'll play them. And then at 1135, Factor
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: Fiction from Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, your chance to
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000 this week, $ 10, 000 by December. That's coming up
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: at 1135. All that from Seahawks headquarters on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:01:47Speaker 8: My take is that Sam is 100% without a doubt healthy.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: You play him.
- 1:01:53Speaker 8: Washington is decimated by injuries, like.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: You guys just said.
- 1:01:57Speaker 8: You got a chance to get a couple get-right games
- 1:01:59Speaker 8: before the San Francisco game. Be nice to get a
- 1:02:03Speaker 8: couple games under Sam's belt. I know Drew's been playing well,
- 1:02:06Speaker 8: but Sam's our guy.
- 1:02:09Speaker 6: Hey guys, Jerry DiPoto here, your favorite GM.
- 1:02:12Speaker 11: I think the fan base owes.
- 1:02:14Speaker 6: Us a thank you, and I think we're doing them
- 1:02:17Speaker 6: a favor by doing iPad-only ball. We'll continue to strictly
- 1:02:21Speaker 6: go off analytics with no feel for the game, and
- 1:02:24Speaker 6: I'm excited to fire Dan Wilson and augment and bring
- 1:02:27Speaker 6: in another puppet of mine to read an iPad. It's
- 1:02:31Speaker 6: a very tough job to look at a computer, but
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: that's the only way we'll do it, and we'll continue
- 1:02:35Speaker 6: to do it.
- 1:02:36Speaker 11: And you're welcome, fans.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: That 54% will live forever, won't it?
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: Well, the thing that is a little striking is this year.
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: Because you'd be fine with that.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: It's a valid question on who they're going to get
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: as manager. Because the league, they know. They've seen Scott Service,
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: with no experience, become a manager under Jerry DiPoto for
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: nine years. Then he was replaced in the middle of
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: the season by Dan Wilson, who had no managerial experience.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: But Maniacta in-house is seeing it up close how they
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: deal with it and play iPad ball and the analytics-based.
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: I don't see how you're going to get a Joe Madden.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: I don't even know if Maniacta would take the job
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: at this point.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: I think seeing maybe the stress on Dan Wilson's face
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: might contribute to his decision.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: Okay, we got one more that just came in. So
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: the reason you don't trade Drew Locke is one name.
- 1:03:43Speaker 5: Earl Morrill.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: Tell people who Earl Morrill was. Yeah, Earl Morrill was
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: the backup quarterback to Johnny Unitas. And Earl Morrill was
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: like 40 years old and came into games with the
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: Colts when Unitas got hurt. This was in the 60s.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: And would win games out of nowhere after not playing
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: for months because he was just such a sage veteran.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Earl Morrill came in in this... Well, Earl Morrill started,
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken, if I got my facts right,
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: Earl Morrill started Super Bowl III because Johnny Unitas had
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: been ineffective and injured. And Unitas, at the age of
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: some 40-some, came in late in the game. I was
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: trying to be a knight on a white horse against
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: the Jets in Super Bowl III and tried to avert
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: the biggest upset at the time in Super Bowl history,
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: and he couldn't do it. But Earl Morrill was the
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: quarterback who, yeah, a trusted backup. Now, this is, of course,
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: before free agency and all that. Sure.
- 1:04:34Speaker 11: But, yeah.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: Earl Morrill. Man, that's a throwback reference. Someone from my
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: era and even before my era.
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: The second overall pick?
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: It's worth saying again, you don't trade Duloc because that's
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: an asset you have that no NFL team has. You
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: have an advantage. A team that chases edges, that's an
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: edge you've already chased down and won with. You've got
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: a backup quarterback that can win. Don't lose him.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: And figured out how to afford it and also keep him.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: A couple of you on the text line bringing up that.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: 206 says, don't play Sam Donald. Trade Drew Locke and
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: play Jalen Milrow? Okay, I wrote that because the morning
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: show is still glute hurt about how their trade Drew
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: Locke trade blew up.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: Yeah. I just wouldn't.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: I would never trade him and see what the salary
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: cap is and all the assets that you want to
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: keep at the end of the season, but do not
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: trade him.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: Here's another point a couple people have brought up the
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: last couple days on the Tacoma Dodge Text Line 49451.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: 206 says, I would start Drew Locke not just to
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: give Sam another week off, but because of the condition
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: of the field in Washington, unless they've changed it recently. Now,
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: there's the notorious issue of grass at that stadium that RG3,
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: Robert Griffin, in a playoff game against the Seahawks, blew
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: out his knee and it altered and eventually ended his career. Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: on a very soft field that was painted green. It
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: was basically sand. That was through a winter in Washington,
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: and the commanders and Dan Snyder were too cheap to
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: replace their field. When I yell about grass fields and
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: the fact that you need to have grass fields, I'm
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: talking about actually committing the money to replacing grass fields
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: when they get worn out by the weather in the winter.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Owners don't want to do that, but Pittsburgh does it.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: Pittsburgh's owners, the Rooney family, they spend money every year
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: Pitt plays on that grass field in Pittsburgh. High school
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: teams play their state championships in western Pennsylvania on that
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: grass field. And the Roonies spend money on replacing the
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: entire field, or at least between the numbers. And, yeah,
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: the Commanders just painted dirt and sand green, and it
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: ruined RG3' s career. And the grass has been loose and
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: purportedly one of the worst fields in the league for years.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: That is ridiculous. That's not a nothing. I don't know
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: if the Seahawks are thinking about that, but there is
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: a history there.
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: It's something that I hadn't thought of.
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: When it comes to who to play. I would just
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: give Sam another week regardless of the venue.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: I agree. The 425 brings up something that about a
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: half dozen, maybe a dozen people have brought up the
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: last hour for the Graham Benzinger issue in the interview
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: with Mike McDonald. Fortress is not a lesson. McDonald knew
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: what he was doing and how it would flesh out. Also,
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: did not believe journalism and journalist integrity is at stake.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: This was planned. I'm tempted to ask McDonald in 30
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: minutes whether he knew this would get out or whether
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: he was OK with it getting.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: Out or whether he has to be aware that question
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: is going to be asked.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: I think so. I think so. I think Dave Pearson
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: and the Seahawks are probably talking about how to handle this. But, yeah.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: So many people on the text line think if McDonald
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: did this on purpose, I might end up having to
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: ask him if he did it on purpose. I don't
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: think he did.
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: I don't think he did either. I think he was
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: warming up to someone he didn't know. Just my take
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: on it.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: I'm looking in the text line for more along the
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: lines of that. 425 says, the reason he wanted it out, McDonald,
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: is because it sends a don't F with the Seahawks
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: message to the whole league. 425, another 425, different one, says,
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: that reporter will never be able to interview McDonald again.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: Was it worth it?
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: I mean, how many times has Graham flown into Seattle?
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: One.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:08:42Speaker 11: Exactly.
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: I don't exactly see him. You know, he went to
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: the Super Bowl with him. And the Seahawks keep humming
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: the way they are. Maybe he'll ask again and get denied.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Hey, you want a chance to win $ 1, 000? Lucky Eagle
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: Casino and Hotel is going to give you that right now. Oh.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: We're set to go. Glad you're with us.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: day feels lucky.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Fact or Fiction is on.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: Yep, hear the band. We're back on campus. Jessamyn does
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: all the NFL games, so I like to balance it
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: out with college. Plus, honestly, I like to watch college
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: football more than NFL football, maybe because I cover the
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: NFL and the stadiums on Sunday.
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: You can actually root for a team.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. I can have a rooting interest. I already
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: did Army. They were playing Temple on Friday afternoon. I
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: already picked Army minus the three points. So let's stay
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: in college football. Number one, Texas is at number 14, Tennessee,
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: the Longhorns' first ever trip into Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: Both teams are undefeated. Tennessee hadn't played anyone, though. They
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: played Kennesaw State, Georgia Tech, and Furman. Okay, Georgia Tech's
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: a somebody, but you get my point. Texas came back
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: from down 23-3 late to Ohio State to beat the
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: then number one Buckeyes in Austin a couple weeks ago. Texan,
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: the Steve Sarkeesians are favored by four and a half
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: at Tennessee. I think the Horns are going to win
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: by at least a touchdown. So I'm going to give
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: the 4.5 points. I'm laying the 4.5 points. Take Texas
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: minus 4.5 at Tennessee. The number one team will win
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: again by five or more points. If you agree with that,
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: text FACT to 49451. If you disagree and you don't
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: want to win $ 1, 000, text FICTION to 49451. You have
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: 12 minutes from right now. Texas minus 4.5 at Tennessee.
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: How it works is... If you win once, you will
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: be in it for the entire week. We do 20
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: picks a week. If you win just one time, you're
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: entered into the drawing that we will pull a name
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: out of a hat on Monday for a chance to
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000 at weekly winners. But it behooves you to
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: play as often as you can, as often as you
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: can humanly listen, because even if you don't win $ 1, 000
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: during the contest, the accumulation of wins, the person who
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: wins the most times Between now and December 11th, we'll
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: win $ 10, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Your
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: chance to win is twice, twofold. Once this week and
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: $ 10, 000 at the end of the contest. Contest ends on
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: December 11th. That's the Friday of the Army-Navy game. Justin
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: McIntyre and I will be in Times Square at the
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: Army-Navy game on December 11th, broadcasting live the day before
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: Army and Navy play in the Meadowlands across the Hudson River.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: Texas minus 4.5 at Tennessee. This is my picker, Fact
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: or Fiction. Text FACT to 49451 if you agree. Text
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: FICTION to 49451 if you disagree. And for next, we'll
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: have another pick at 2.35. Dave Softy-Maller and Dick Fane
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: will have another pick at 3.35. And then we'll do
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: it again tomorrow morning at 7.35 with Chuck Powell.
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: It's just so fun.
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: Pardon me?
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: It's just so fun. And we're all competing against each other, too.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: Where are we in the standings? Do you know?
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: Let's see.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: Hold on.
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: Show standings right now. We are number one.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: Of course we are.
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: And we're five and five. We are less than 54%, Greg. Yeah,
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: I know. But we are number one, and Chuck Powell
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: in the morning is number two, and Furness and Softee
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: are tied for our third place.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: Yeah. Texas minus four and a half at Tennessee is
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: our pick today. Jessamyn will have another one tomorrow. I
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: just lost my page of All the text that I
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: was going to read back. Oh, okay. Any that catch
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: your eye? Okay.
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: Well, actually, what I am seeing is that a lot
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: of facts and fictions are coming in, which means we
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: need to fix that window.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what it is. A lot of facts, by
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: the way. A lot of people agree with me. Yes,
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: I agree. So how does that work? Do people have
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: to resubmit? Yes, please.
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: We will get that window fixed, and I will work
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: on that.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: All right. So Jessamyn's going to work on the fact
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: or fiction machine, because I see a ton of facts
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: on my what should be text message. list. So we're
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: going to change it so you can actually get your
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: fact or fictions reported and recorded properly. So the text
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: line is now blowing up with fact everywhere, actually, which
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: means it's not going to the right place. So we'll
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: fix that. And when Jessamine tells us that it's fixed, please,
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: if you've already just texted fact or fiction, re-text to
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: 49451 your pick in a minute or so when we
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: get this fixed so you have your chance to win $ 1, 000.
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: We don't want it to go into this ether here
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: It looks like it's on the text line. I mean,
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: like hundreds of texts are coming in. In fact, I
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: appreciate everybody agreeing with me. Text is minus four and
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: a half at Tennessee. But, yeah, I hear you. Bounce back,
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: kick back.
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: We are working on that.
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: And the window might open a couple minutes later if
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: there's a glitch in the system. So please re-text in.
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: And you should get a bounce back as soon as
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: we get that fixed. But please resubmit if you're listening
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: right now.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: All right. Sorry for the inconvenience. Texas minus four and
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: a half at Tennessee. I think Longhorns win by five
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: or more points. If you've already texted in, do it again.
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: Just redo it to 49451. If you agree with me,
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: text fact to 49451. If you disagree, text fiction to 49451.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: The shell answer woman, the do-it-all Jessamyn McIntyre is working
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: on fixing the bounce backs and the fact that the
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: texts aren't. going into the right place. But we'll get you.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: We'll get you recorded. Keep trying for your chance to
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000. It looks like.
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: It's working now. All right. Just so you know.
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: So if you have already texted in, you didn't get
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: a bounce back, please re-text in.
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: The window opened a little later than planned.
- 1:14:54Speaker 11: All right.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: There you go. Texas minus four and a half at Tennessee.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: If you agree, text fact right now. You'll have 12
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: minutes from about right now. So text fact. If you
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: already did it, do it again so you're sure you're entered.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: If you agree, Texas minus 4.5 at Tennessee. Text FAC
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: to 49451. If you don't want to win $ 1, 000, text
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: FICTION to 49451. We'll keep you up for 12 minutes.
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: Sorry about the glitch on timing. If you already did it,
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: do it again. Just do yourself a favor and get
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: your chance to enter. Texas minus 4.5 at Tennessee. Up next,
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: Ian Furness will join me here at Seahawk Headquarters to
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: tell me what he's got cooking as I prepare to
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: go to a Mike McDonald press conference at noon, live
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: from Seahawk Headquarters on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back. Greg Bell,
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: Justin McIntyre with you on 93.3 KJFM as we are
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: every day 10 a.m. to noon and every day 12
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: to 3. And Furness is on. And today, Furness is
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: sitting right next to me here at Seahawks headquarters where
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: the Seahawks are preparing to play the Washington Commanders. Hello, sir.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: How are you? I'm swell. Thank you. You're a journalist.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: You've been in this business for more than a day
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: in different mediums, including television and radio. Your reaction to
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: what Graham Bensinger pulled on the Seahawks coach? airing that,
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: what looked like absolutely off the record.
- 1:16:16Speaker 11: Without hearing from Mike McDonald yet. Which we will in
- 1:16:19Speaker 11: 20 minutes. I think it was wrong. It goes against
- 1:16:23Speaker 11: everything that you're supposed to do. You know, everything about
- 1:16:31Speaker 11: it looked off the record. And I know I see
- 1:16:34Speaker 11: people saying, well, if there's a hot mic, you've got
- 1:16:36Speaker 11: to understand.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 1:16:38Speaker 11: There's certain things that are understood. Um, I think there
- 1:16:41Speaker 11: are ethics involved.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:16:44Speaker 11: And I, I just, you know, I grew up in
- 1:16:47Speaker 11: an era where, you know, I, I mean, I grew
- 1:16:50Speaker 11: up in the TV news business, my father hanging out
- 1:16:53Speaker 11: with him, but then when I, you know, first finished school,
- 1:16:55Speaker 11: I was, I worked in the, in the TV newsroom
- 1:16:58Speaker 11: for years in Como. Um, and it was a different
- 1:17:01Speaker 11: newsroom back then. Um, layers of stuff you had to
- 1:17:04Speaker 11: go through. I mean, I've talked about before when we,
- 1:17:06Speaker 11: we found out the night we were the ones that
- 1:17:08Speaker 11: broke Como, broke the story. Emily Langley, but along with
- 1:17:12Speaker 11: myself and Bruce King, broke the story on Mike Blatt,
- 1:17:14Speaker 11: the GM getting arrested for murder for hire, who was
- 1:17:17Speaker 11: supposed to be the CX GM under Ken Bering. We
- 1:17:21Speaker 11: got the first call at 5 or 6 o'clock at night,
- 1:17:24Speaker 11: and we weren't able to go on the air with
- 1:17:25Speaker 11: it until right, I think it was the second story
- 1:17:28Speaker 11: at 11 o'clock. It would have been the top one,
- 1:17:30Speaker 11: but we had to get so much stuff cleared. It's
- 1:17:33Speaker 11: just different now with social media, with people that have
- 1:17:37Speaker 11: zero training in media. whether it be journalism or otherwise.
- 1:17:43Speaker 11: No thought of ramifications or, you know, what the end
- 1:17:46Speaker 11: result could be. You know, what happens if you air
- 1:17:49Speaker 11: this and it's wrong or if it just wasn't right
- 1:17:51Speaker 11: to air, if it was maybe off the record. So
- 1:17:54Speaker 11: it's just a different world. And listen, the world changes.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: It evolves.
- 1:17:57Speaker 11: I'm not saying good or bad. It's different. But you're
- 1:18:00Speaker 11: going to have these situations. And, you know, Mike probably
- 1:18:04Speaker 11: learned a lesson along the way, who he can trust,
- 1:18:07Speaker 11: a guy he probably never met before.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: I'm not sure why he let him into his house.
- 1:18:11Speaker 11: That's the part I'm just fascinated by. It's like, why
- 1:18:14Speaker 11: are you the guy getting in?
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: I haven't been to Mike McDonald's house. None of the
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: beat writers have, and we've covered him every day for
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: three years.
- 1:18:21Speaker 11: Graham Bensinger, I just remember him, these promos that used
- 1:18:24Speaker 11: to run when the Mariners and the Kraken were on Root,
- 1:18:27Speaker 11: and it's a syndicated show, and Root aired it. It
- 1:18:30Speaker 11: wasn't a Root show. They just aired it. They bought airtime.
- 1:18:33Speaker 11: And I'm like, who the hell is Graham? But he
- 1:18:35Speaker 11: gets all kinds of great guests. Who is this guy?
- 1:18:37Speaker 11: Are they paying him people?
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't either. I don't know anything
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: about him.
- 1:18:41Speaker 11: There's so many things in this. And then the whole
- 1:18:43Speaker 11: process of video being captured off of social media. media
- 1:18:50Speaker 11: from fans at a Denver Broncos training camp. That's just fantastic.
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought it was funny.
- 1:18:56Speaker 11: That's awesome.
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: That they actually had spent the time to collect 100
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: plays off of people's social media accounts. Every team does
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: it now. Every team does it.
- 1:19:06Speaker 11: Well, and that's why when you come out to training
- 1:19:07Speaker 11: camp at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, they tell you
- 1:19:11Speaker 11: not to shoot video, and if they catch you, you're
- 1:19:12Speaker 11: in trouble, and that's why you see us all abiding
- 1:19:15Speaker 11: by the rules. It's like even today, we're going to have, what,
- 1:19:17Speaker 11: 10 minutes.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: And we would love to be able to show you
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: more of what Sam Darnold is doing, and whether Zach
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: Charbonnet is on the field today.
- 1:19:24Speaker 11: All those things, and my guess is if Charbonnet is
- 1:19:27Speaker 11: on the field, we won't see him until after we're
- 1:19:28Speaker 11: already off.
- 1:19:29Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 1:19:30Speaker 11: And all that stuff, how it works, but.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: But we have accountability because we work here and we're
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: going to be coming back tomorrow to play by the rules.
- 1:19:39Speaker 11: See, that's the thing I have a problem with just
- 1:19:40Speaker 11: in our business as a whole is, and I'll get
- 1:19:42Speaker 11: into this a little later, but it's, you know, you, me, Softie,
- 1:19:47Speaker 11: you know, Fane. Like, we get out from the radio station.
- 1:19:52Speaker 11: We're at places, in locker rooms, or talking. Like, I've
- 1:19:55Speaker 11: got A.J. Barner coming in today, face-to-face. Last week I had.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: Who do we have?
- 1:19:59Speaker 11: Riley Mills face-to-face. All training camp. We talked to these
- 1:20:02Speaker 11: guys face-to-face. I had to sit down with Mike McDonald.
- 1:20:04Speaker 11: I have to face the Seahawks PR staff. I have
- 1:20:07Speaker 11: to ask them for help. I can't just go rogue.
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: No, you can't burn people you've got to work with
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: the next day. No, but this guy doesn't have to
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: work with anyone the next day. What do you got today?
- 1:20:15Speaker 11: We've got a lot.
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: A.J.
- 1:20:16Speaker 11: Barner, as I mentioned, up top of the show, or
- 1:20:18Speaker 11: close to it or so, so we'll get the Seahawks
- 1:20:20Speaker 11: tied in in here. We'll check in with Stuart Mandel,
- 1:20:22Speaker 11: weekly visit, talking all things college football. Man, there's a
- 1:20:24Speaker 11: lot going on. We'll get to the NIL story he wrote, too,
- 1:20:26Speaker 11: about where Washington ranks and what that means. Yes, that
- 1:20:29Speaker 11: was interesting. So we'll get to that coming up.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: Near the bottom of the Big Ten.
- 1:20:31Speaker 11: Yeah, at 2 o'clock, and then Corbin's swinging by at
- 1:20:33Speaker 11: 2 o'clock. So we've got a busy show.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: Lots to come.
- 1:20:35Speaker 11: And we'll hear whatever you guys ask Mike McDonald about, too.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: Yes, and the Graham-Benziger thing will come up. Beautiful. Ian's
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: up next from 12 until 3. He'll have Factor Fiction
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: at 2.35. Thanks for hanging on the glitch on Factor Fiction.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: I hope you got a chance to resubmit to get
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: it in. Is up next. Jessamyn and I thank you.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: We'll do it again tomorrow. I'll be here at Seahawks
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: again tomorrow. Off to talk to Mike McDonald now. The
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: end's next on 93.3 KJRFM.
