- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, this is plenty.
- 0:01Speaker 2: I'm going on tour in a few weeks, playing a
- 0:04Speaker 2: new album and Unnamable Desire in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide
- 0:08Speaker 2: and Perth.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Fantastic mate, thanks for joining us today, pleasure. So, as
- 0:14Speaker 3: you say, Brad, you have announced some Australian and New
- 0:16Speaker 3: Zealand dates as part of your global and Unbelievable Desire chour,
- 0:20Speaker 3: starting in Brisbane on August of six, before hitting the
- 0:22Speaker 3: Sydney at Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Auckland, then finishing in
- 0:25Speaker 3: Wellington on August is fifteenth. So what the lights have
- 0:28Speaker 3: you got in store for a fifth time around.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Roy playing a lot of the new album and a
- 0:34Speaker 2: lot of the oldest stuff that people seem to love. Yeah,
- 0:38Speaker 2: it just should be really fun. We just did it
- 0:41Speaker 2: in Europe for about four or five weeks and it
- 0:43Speaker 2: was really fun. All the new stuff was especially fun
- 0:48Speaker 2: to play.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Wait, and actually say you started the chur in Europe
- 0:53Speaker 3: back in April. So how far through it you may?
- 0:55Speaker 3: Can you see see the endiat? Or are you still
- 0:57Speaker 3: just service? M?
- 0:59Speaker 1: Probably less than halfway?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Going to Asia next week and play in Singapore, Thailand, China, India, Japan,
- 1:11Speaker 2: and I think that's probably about halfway, and then Australia
- 1:14Speaker 2: will be like the second half, and then we go
- 1:16Speaker 2: to the States in Canada at.
- 1:18Speaker 1: The end of the year.
- 1:20Speaker 3: How do you go with the overseas audiences? What Australian crowds?
- 1:24Speaker 3: Our music, love and crowds are different pretty much everywhere
- 1:26Speaker 3: else in the world. I think that's been proven. So
- 1:28Speaker 3: how now different is a playing to other audiences? What
- 1:31Speaker 3: do they get what you're doing?
- 1:32Speaker 1: Straight up?
- 1:34Speaker 2: It depends on the place, I think in general everywhere, yes,
- 1:39Speaker 2: but just the way of showing it can be different.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I mean, like the music that makes not sometimes some
- 1:45Speaker 2: of it's energetic, but it's not always. So there will
- 1:49Speaker 2: be a lot of people just standing and watching and
- 1:53Speaker 2: they could be having an amazing time, but it's not
- 1:56Speaker 2: necessarily the same feedback as seeing like a circle pit
- 2:01Speaker 2: or like people mushing. But in general, like it's just yea,
- 2:06Speaker 2: all very positive and.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I suppose you get a bit of that too, way like,
- 2:10Speaker 3: because because what you do is an art form in
- 2:13Speaker 3: itself on guitar, like, people would just sit there and
- 2:15Speaker 3: watch you a lot. A lot of times people would
- 2:17Speaker 3: actually get into it because they'd just be focusing on
- 2:20Speaker 3: you and watching you, so it's not even retrofed. Sometimes
- 2:23Speaker 3: you wouldn't know if they're getting into it or if
- 2:25Speaker 3: they're bored.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, and it's not so interesting to see, like
- 2:31Speaker 2: in different cities, what proportion of the audience there are
- 2:35Speaker 2: like metal people, because like I love metal, but like
- 2:41Speaker 2: some some cities it could be a metal festival. Some
- 2:45Speaker 2: cities it could be like being at a music school
- 2:48Speaker 2: and like no one would marsh sort of thing. So yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 2: it's just interesting seeing and meeting all the different sorts
- 2:55Speaker 2: of fans of this music.
- 2:57Speaker 3: So you'd be used to it too, but it's only
- 2:59Speaker 3: just dawned on me then though, Like when you're playing,
- 3:01Speaker 3: no one's singing the words back like that, So yes,
- 3:03Speaker 3: the usual part of the constant experiences here and everyone's
- 3:07Speaker 3: seeing it, So it's it would be different in some respects,
- 3:10Speaker 3: wasn't it.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah, there's definitely less to go off compared to a
- 3:14Speaker 2: lot of the concerts that I go to in terms of.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Whether people are enjoying it or not.
- 3:20Speaker 2: But then also I go to it every now and
- 3:22Speaker 2: then I'll go to like a seated jazz gig or
- 3:25Speaker 2: even like more classical and everyone will be completely silent
- 3:31Speaker 2: until the very end and then clap politely, and that
- 3:34Speaker 2: doesn't mean they enjoyed it any less.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So I guess.
- 3:38Speaker 2: It's nice to go all around the world and try
- 3:41Speaker 2: to not have any expectations of how people will show
- 3:45Speaker 2: that they're having a good time.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Doesn't ever get difficult for you the record, and I
- 3:50Speaker 3: know musicians feed off the crowd. A lot of the
- 3:52Speaker 3: crowd energy coming back at the spurs them one. So
- 3:55Speaker 3: because you're not actually getting as much as what a
- 3:58Speaker 3: normal band would like kind of to be difficult sometimes.
- 4:03Speaker 1: A little bit.
- 4:04Speaker 2: But I try to just look into the crowd because usually,
- 4:09Speaker 2: like most people will smile if they're having a good time,
- 4:12Speaker 2: and so just kind of if I if I can
- 4:16Speaker 2: see someone smile and that has the same impact on
- 4:19Speaker 2: me as someone's like screaming like crazy. It's it's two
- 4:24Speaker 2: people enjoying themselves, which should make me equally as happy.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right, and that's the title of the choice suggests. Mate.
- 4:32Speaker 3: You're chrowing on the back of your new album, An
- 4:35Speaker 3: Unbelievable Desire, which dropped on April the twenty four, So
- 4:38Speaker 3: how's the early reception being made? Is it get the response, yoapt.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been going really well.
- 4:45Speaker 2: The first couple of songs were put out before the
- 4:47Speaker 2: album came out, everyone seemed to really like. There is
- 4:53Speaker 2: thing that I've been especially happy with is the response
- 4:56Speaker 2: to the new songs live has been probably the best
- 5:01Speaker 2: ever to something so new and like. So it came
- 5:03Speaker 2: out on the twenty fourth. The first show we played
- 5:05Speaker 2: it was the twenty eighth, and I don't know if
- 5:08Speaker 2: people necessarily even knew the songs yet, but it seemed
- 5:12Speaker 2: like they were enjoying them as much as any of
- 5:15Speaker 2: the older, more popular stuff, which has been really cool.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Yeah, and one of those lives too. But like you
- 5:21Speaker 3: would have been playing a lot of the songs for
- 5:23Speaker 3: the first couple of times on that chort, So are
- 5:25Speaker 3: there any on there that went over a lot better
- 5:27Speaker 3: than you thought they might or neither were not quite
- 5:30Speaker 3: as well received as you thought would have been good?
- 5:32Speaker 2: Thankfully none that were not as well received. But there
- 5:36Speaker 2: is a track called Manala that's like a pretty heavy,
- 5:39Speaker 2: intense one that I think kind of quickly became a
- 5:43Speaker 2: bit of a favorite, which was really cool.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Yeah. The press release says that the album made it
- 5:49Speaker 3: It calls it a stunning new chapter in your musical career?
- 5:53Speaker 3: Would you agree with that assessment?
- 5:55Speaker 1: I would be happy to agree with that.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Well, I don't know about the stunning part, but I
- 6:02Speaker 2: guess every new sort of release is like a different chapter,
- 6:08Speaker 2: and I feel like, I mean, I did my best,
- 6:11Speaker 2: and everyone involved did their best, so hopefully it does
- 6:14Speaker 2: come across stunning.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Studying is a beautiful word, isn't it? So can you
- 6:21Speaker 3: talk a bit deeper into the album cross musically? Until
- 6:23Speaker 3: I thought you were going call this one around?
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, some of my goals when I first started
- 6:29Speaker 2: working on it were to make heavy parts that were
- 6:33Speaker 2: heavier than anything I'd done, and to have like technical
- 6:37Speaker 2: guitar parts that were kind of crazier and harder to play.
- 6:41Speaker 2: And then also to make sure it was still like
- 6:44Speaker 2: felt like all the parts were there for a reason
- 6:47Speaker 2: and telling a story.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And then in a like more nerdy way.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Just trying to explore things I haven't done, like different
- 6:55Speaker 2: time signatures and other guitar techniques and shit like that.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I noticed she had a few guest starteds there, like
- 7:02Speaker 3: playing other instruments and stuff. So in an album process
- 7:05Speaker 3: like that, like do you write all of the music
- 7:07Speaker 3: and they just come in and play it, or do
- 7:08Speaker 3: they bring their own music to the table.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yeah, a bit of both.
- 7:11Speaker 2: I'll write a song pretty much and then have an
- 7:14Speaker 2: idea like, oh, this would be interesting if it was
- 7:16Speaker 2: played on a harp. And then I met a half
- 7:20Speaker 2: player a few years ago, so I sent it to her,
- 7:23Speaker 2: not with much instruction, just like, here's the section that
- 7:26Speaker 2: I'm thinking, and like, if you can play this melody
- 7:30Speaker 2: at the end, like with the guitar, and then just
- 7:34Speaker 2: trust her to do a great job. Saying with my
- 7:36Speaker 2: friend Yaka, who played the guest guitar solo, I just
- 7:39Speaker 2: send him the section and kind of no instruction and
- 7:42Speaker 2: just assume that he'll do what's good for the track.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And yeah, that's how it worked with everyone.
- 7:48Speaker 3: So like you're talking to a non viso here, mates,
- 7:50Speaker 3: I've got no idea how this works. But when you
- 7:53Speaker 3: send the music to someone to do a guest what like,
- 7:55Speaker 3: have you got an idea in your head of where
- 7:57Speaker 3: you want it to be going or do you just
- 7:59Speaker 3: sort of clear your head and whatever they throw back
- 8:01Speaker 3: at you your work.
- 8:02Speaker 1: With a bit of both.
- 8:03Speaker 2: I think as time's gone on, I prefer to give
- 8:07Speaker 2: less instructions and just rely on like my trust and
- 8:11Speaker 2: friendship with the person that it will come out good.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you and you talked about the singles released before too, bro,
- 8:18Speaker 3: Like you've released three of them to date on Think
- 8:20Speaker 3: and you've flirted with music videos. You start around a
- 8:23Speaker 3: lot more than what you have in the past. Words,
- 8:25Speaker 3: what's what's the reasoning there?
- 8:27Speaker 2: Yeah, because I guess I'd never really done like a
- 8:30Speaker 2: narrative music video. And I was talking with Jamie and
- 8:36Speaker 2: Decklan who like direct and film that stuff, like what
- 8:40Speaker 2: can we do that's not just like me sitting in
- 8:43Speaker 2: a room playing guitar, and I came up with this
- 8:48Speaker 2: idea to have a series of music videos that are
- 8:50Speaker 2: all like telling one story. And then they kind of
- 8:54Speaker 2: fleshed it out and went away and did most of
- 8:57Speaker 2: the filming of the stuff that doesn't have the band
- 8:59Speaker 2: in it, and then we have this the second one
- 9:04Speaker 2: the band is in, so it's kind of like this
- 9:06Speaker 2: story is happening, and then you go into a room
- 9:09Speaker 2: and there's a band playing, and then the story continues.
- 9:13Speaker 2: And Yeah, that was a really it was a fun
- 9:15Speaker 2: process just to do something different.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Would have been as a musician, bro, Like, of course
- 9:23Speaker 3: you're always trying to improve and grow as an artist
- 9:26Speaker 3: with every release. But when you started May You're a
- 9:28Speaker 3: motherfucker all the way back then. So if you're getting
- 9:31Speaker 3: better with every album, like, how do you keep up
- 9:33Speaker 3: on stage? Man? Like? If you keep chopping what you've
- 9:35Speaker 3: done in the past, it's got to be a limit.
- 9:38Speaker 2: I'm sure I'll hit the limits soon, but at least
- 9:41Speaker 2: for now, I'm going to try my best to keep
- 9:43Speaker 2: pushing myself.
- 9:46Speaker 3: No, I write another quote from me that said that
- 9:49Speaker 3: you're going to be bringing your biggest production to date
- 9:52Speaker 3: to these Australian shows. So what do you mean by that?
- 9:56Speaker 2: Just lots of lights and some banners and yeah, just
- 10:00Speaker 2: trying to put on more of a show. I'm also
- 10:03Speaker 2: the Ruins we're playing I think the biggest yet because
- 10:07Speaker 2: I guess when I started my inspiration, especially with live shows,
- 10:13Speaker 2: were these bigger bands who like playing in a theater
- 10:18Speaker 2: and like kind of a mysterious vibe if it's dark
- 10:23Speaker 2: on stage, that sort of thing which you don't get
- 10:25Speaker 2: in a small like in a pub or in a
- 10:28Speaker 2: So trying to put on that sort of show, yeah
- 10:32Speaker 2: should be fun.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah nice?
- 10:34Speaker 1: Nice?
- 10:35Speaker 3: And you bring in with you Delta Sleep, Sonobia and
- 10:39Speaker 3: might Dive for the Chalk too, man, So tell us
- 10:41Speaker 3: a bit more about those guys and why you chose
- 10:43Speaker 3: each one to play with you.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Yeah, every time we do an Aussie tour, I try
- 10:47Speaker 2: to put together an interesting bill, like bands people maybe
- 10:51Speaker 2: haven't heard of or haven't seen yet. Delta Sleep I
- 10:56Speaker 2: came here a couple of years ago and they're fucking awesome,
- 10:59Speaker 2: and I've seen them also at a festival in the UK,
- 11:02Speaker 2: and they're like extremely musical, like great technical players, but
- 11:06Speaker 2: I don't think that's the the focus when you see them.
- 11:11Speaker 2: They just are like a really sick band where everyone's
- 11:15Speaker 2: charismatic and like they're all singing, and that's quite different
- 11:18Speaker 2: I think to my performance, which maybe seems more serious.
- 11:25Speaker 1: But still like fun.
- 11:28Speaker 2: And then Sonobia is I guess a pretty new artist
- 11:32Speaker 2: and still quite mysterious and like vocals obviously very different
- 11:38Speaker 2: to me, so it'll be super.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Fun to have her.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And Night Dive is a band who are pretty much
- 11:45Speaker 2: all my band's friends. They're also a new band. They
- 11:49Speaker 2: started about a year ago probably, And yeah, I mean
- 11:54Speaker 2: it's hard to hear any of their songs. I'll see
- 11:57Speaker 2: them and not just enjoy it because they're insanely good
- 12:00Speaker 2: and write six songs, and also three bands with vocalists
- 12:05Speaker 2: before us will be.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Cool yelled their art scale before you get on, and
- 12:10Speaker 3: they won'ted to be out to yell at you. So
- 12:14Speaker 3: did you remember the first time you ever heard one
- 12:16Speaker 3: of your songs on the radio? And what song was it?
- 12:19Speaker 3: And where were you?
- 12:21Speaker 1: I actually don't remember it all.
- 12:23Speaker 3: You're the first one who's sucked me up with that.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I can tell you this, though, I guess it's not radio.
- 12:32Speaker 2: But one of the funniest experiences was playing in either
- 12:38Speaker 2: Tokyo or Osaka and the next day going into a
- 12:42Speaker 2: cafe and they were playing my music because they'd been
- 12:45Speaker 2: at the show. Oh cool, yeah, buzz yeah, we give
- 12:51Speaker 2: you have to translate for everyone they couldn't speak English.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Oh that's a good thing about the music.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Oh right, man, Well, thank you very much for your time.
- 13:02Speaker 3: The tour is kicking off, Augus is sick. Where can
- 13:05Speaker 3: people get a hold of tickets and find out more information?
- 13:07Speaker 2: Hi, either from the venues of plenty dot coanctasy.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Maybe Well, I'm going to read along to the Brisbane
- 13:13Speaker 3: show and say good as so We'll see you in
- 13:15Speaker 3: the microst
- 13:16Speaker 1: Listen, see you then cheers Man
