- 1:28Speaker 2: The story you were about to hear is true, only
- 1:31Speaker 2: the names have been changed to protect the innocent. You're
- 1:43Speaker 2: a detective sergeant here assigned to homicide detail. A well
- 1:48Speaker 2: known business manager city disappears suddenly from his home. He's
- 1:52Speaker 2: seen driving away from the house and the company of
- 1:54Speaker 2: two unidentified men there's no explanation for it.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Your job find him.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Drag Net the documented drama of an actual crime. Well
- 2:14Speaker 4: the next thirty minutes, in cooperation of the Los Angeles
- 2:16Speaker 4: Police Department, you will travel, step by step on the
- 2:19Speaker 4: side of the law through an actual case transcribed from
- 2:22Speaker 4: official police buyos, from beginning to end, from crime to punishment.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Dragnet is the story of your police force.
- 2:29Speaker 5: In action.
- 2:33Speaker 6: Was Wednesday, October tenth. That was mild in Los Angeles.
- 2:36Speaker 6: We were working the night Watch out of homicide detail.
- 2:39Speaker 6: My partner's Ben Romero. The boss is Captain Lrmon. My
- 2:42Speaker 6: name's Friday. I was on the way back from the
- 2:44Speaker 6: record Bureau and it was ten thirty eight pm when
- 2:46Speaker 6: I got to Room forty two Homicide.
- 2:52Speaker 7: Hey, Ben Romero, that here Joe Captain's office.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Oh yeah, come Joe, sit down, Thank you? I got
- 3:01Speaker 5: your call. What's it all about?
- 3:03Speaker 7: Your clothes? A good Niam skipper. You want to breathe him.
- 3:06Speaker 5: It's a man by the name of Tony Richmond.
- 3:07Speaker 8: He disappeared from his house tonight show looks like it
- 3:09Speaker 8: might be foul play.
- 3:11Speaker 5: Tony Richmond name sounds off from internet.
- 3:13Speaker 7: It runs a couple of garages around time promote the
- 3:16Speaker 7: sports events.
- 3:16Speaker 9: On the side.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Sure, what's the story on him?
- 3:19Speaker 8: Here's the way we got it from Richmond's wife. He
- 3:21Speaker 8: was at home tonight. The whole family was sitting in
- 3:23Speaker 8: the back room looking at television. Richmond, his wife, two children,
- 3:27Speaker 8: and his father in law.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:28Speaker 8: About nine o'clock the doorbell rang. Richmond went to answer it.
- 3:31Speaker 8: He hasn't been seen since. Yeah, that's right. Missus Richmond
- 3:35Speaker 8: said she thought she heard a little loud talking at
- 3:37Speaker 8: the front door and didn't pay any attention to it.
- 3:39Speaker 8: Her husband didn't come back. She went to have a look.
- 3:41Speaker 8: Front door was wide open, her husband was gone. No
- 3:44Speaker 8: explanation for it at all.
- 3:45Speaker 7: One of the Richmond's neighbors were sitting by a front
- 3:47Speaker 7: wind at the time, and Missus Sandford, she said, she's
- 3:49Speaker 7: a mist Richmond come down the front steps about that time,
- 3:52Speaker 7: one man on either side of him. He got the
- 3:54Speaker 7: idea Richmond didn't want to go with him. Is there
- 3:57Speaker 7: any description on the two men, it's incomplete. The neighbors said.
- 4:00Speaker 8: She wasn't sure, but it looked at her like the
- 4:01Speaker 8: two men pushed Richmond in a dark colored sedan and
- 4:04Speaker 8: drove off.
- 4:05Speaker 7: Not much description on the car either, Joe, Oh, where's
- 4:08Speaker 7: that leave us?
- 4:09Speaker 8: We're not positive there's anything wrong yet, there's a possibility
- 4:12Speaker 8: there's nothing more than a misunderstanding.
- 4:13Speaker 5: How do you figure it? We got a couple of
- 4:15Speaker 5: men out at the Richmond's house.
- 4:16Speaker 9: Now.
- 4:16Speaker 8: The wife told him that mister Richmond had a business
- 4:19Speaker 8: appointment at ten o'clock tonight.
- 4:21Speaker 5: She didn't know where with whom would have been with
- 4:23Speaker 5: those two men.
- 4:25Speaker 6: Didn't sound quite right though, I mean walking out without
- 4:28Speaker 6: even telling his wife.
- 4:30Speaker 8: Something else to consider. Wife said that when Richmond went
- 4:33Speaker 8: to answer the front door, he was in his shirt sleeves,
- 4:35Speaker 8: you know. When the neighbors saw him come down the
- 4:37Speaker 8: stairs with the two men. She said he had his
- 4:38Speaker 8: coat on. Those two guys were.
- 4:40Speaker 5: Gonna grab him off. They wouldn't wait for him to
- 4:42Speaker 5: get his coat. Yeah, how's this stand out?
- 4:44Speaker 7: He got out of broadcast on a description of the
- 4:46Speaker 7: two men in the car. Not an awful lot to
- 4:48Speaker 7: go on. No license number.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Anybody in particular who might have had it in for Richmond.
- 4:52Speaker 8: Is there anything like that? No, not that we know
- 4:55Speaker 8: of so far. Dressed pretty well, obviously had money, wore
- 4:58Speaker 8: quite a bit of.
- 4:58Speaker 5: Jewelry, well, what have you got lined up for?
- 5:02Speaker 8: I've got Barrett and Tommy Bryant standing by at the
- 5:04Speaker 8: Richmond's house now still checking her out with Richmond's friends,
- 5:07Speaker 8: some of his business associates.
- 5:09Speaker 9: Nothing so far.
- 5:11Speaker 5: Excuse me sure on a side Loman? Yeah, Tom.
- 5:17Speaker 8: That when yeah, right away, you know what to do.
- 5:22Speaker 8: Keep in touch, right and it takes it out of
- 5:26Speaker 8: the guessing stage. That was Brian out at the Richmond house.
- 5:29Speaker 8: Missus Richmond just got a phone call a few minutes ago. Yeah,
- 5:32Speaker 8: Man's voice. He told her they were holding her husband. Well,
- 5:34Speaker 8: what's her pitch? She wants them back alive. It'll cost
- 5:36Speaker 8: twenty thousand dollars.
- 5:41Speaker 6: As in all cases involving abduction to extort ransom, the
- 5:44Speaker 6: investigating police officers faced immediately with a dozen problems, but
- 5:49Speaker 6: first and foremost is the safe return of the victim.
- 5:52Speaker 6: When that's accomplished and the danger of death or bodily
- 5:55Speaker 6: harm to the victim is removed, the officers then have
- 5:59Speaker 6: the freedom to openly hunt down the abductor, but until
- 6:02Speaker 6: the time the victim is safely returned, apprehending the criminal
- 6:05Speaker 6: suspects remains a secondary consideration. Ten five pm, together with
- 6:12Speaker 6: Captain Lorman, Ben and I left the office and drove
- 6:14Speaker 6: out to the Richmond's home out in North Hollywood, the
- 6:17Speaker 6: scene of the abduction. We parked our car several blocks
- 6:20Speaker 6: away and entered the house from a back street. It
- 6:24Speaker 6: was a large, sprawling, ranch style home, richly landscaped. We
- 6:28Speaker 6: went inside and checked with the two men from homicide
- 6:30Speaker 6: on duty, Barrett and Bryan. They told us that there'd
- 6:34Speaker 6: been no more phone calls, anonymous or otherwise. They also
- 6:37Speaker 6: told us that so far the victim's wife, Adele Richmond,
- 6:40Speaker 6: had been hostile and uncooperative. The abductors had warned her
- 6:44Speaker 6: on the telephone about calling in the police. Now she
- 6:47Speaker 6: was all for paying the twenty thousand dollars ransom and
- 6:49Speaker 6: handling the case without the police. While Ben, Tommy Bryant,
- 6:54Speaker 6: and Barrett re checked the neighborhood for other possible witnesses
- 6:57Speaker 6: to the abduction, Captain Lormon and I went inside and
- 6:59Speaker 6: met the victim's wife and the victim's father in law,
- 7:02Speaker 6: Red Wellman. The wife was an attractive brunette in the
- 7:06Speaker 6: early thirties.
- 7:07Speaker 10: I don't you understand, I just don't want the policemen here.
- 7:10Speaker 10: They can be watching the house right now. They'll kill
- 7:12Speaker 10: tonything or you're here.
- 7:14Speaker 11: I know there's no use getting upset like this. It
- 7:16Speaker 11: hasn't been doing any good.
- 7:17Speaker 8: Your father's right, ma'am. I know it's hard on you,
- 7:19Speaker 8: but getting all worked up isn't going to help much.
- 7:21Speaker 10: I wish i'd never called you in the first place.
- 7:23Speaker 10: I can handle us. I'll pay them the money. I'll
- 7:25Speaker 10: pay them anything, as long as they bring my husband
- 7:27Speaker 10: back safe.
- 7:27Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am, that's possible. What makes you think you can
- 7:30Speaker 5: trust those men?
- 7:31Speaker 8: How do you know you'll get your husband back after
- 7:32Speaker 8: you pay the twenty thousand.
- 7:34Speaker 10: That's what they told me. I talked to them on
- 7:36Speaker 10: the phone. That's what they promised me.
- 7:37Speaker 6: Well they've promised other people too, ma'am. You give them
- 7:39Speaker 6: twenty thousand, they'll want forty. Give them just one opening.
- 7:42Speaker 6: You're going to run it into the ground. They'll take
- 7:43Speaker 6: everything they can get, and you still and have your
- 7:45Speaker 6: husband back.
- 7:46Speaker 10: Well, there's no other way. I have to take the chance.
- 7:48Speaker 5: I have to. There is another way, missus Richmond. That's
- 7:50Speaker 5: why we're here.
- 7:52Speaker 10: What if it gets in the papers publicity, those men
- 7:55Speaker 10: are bound to hear about it.
- 7:56Speaker 8: There won't be a line in the newspapers. I promise
- 7:58Speaker 8: you that as far as we're concerning the own, many
- 8:00Speaker 8: will know about it. It'll be the officers working the case.
- 8:02Speaker 5: We'll do everything we can, ma'am, but we're gonna have
- 8:04Speaker 5: to have your cooperation.
- 8:05Speaker 10: I don't know. If anything happens to Tom, I've got
- 8:09Speaker 10: to sit down. I can't even think. I'm so worried.
- 8:11Speaker 11: That's it, honey, Here, you sit here. I'll get you
- 8:13Speaker 11: some coffee, good hot cup coffee.
- 8:15Speaker 10: Would you see how the children are dead, see if
- 8:17Speaker 10: they're covered.
- 8:18Speaker 11: Yeah, sure, honey, you just rest. You'd care for some coffee? Office?
- 8:22Speaker 9: Thank you?
- 8:22Speaker 11: All right?
- 8:24Speaker 5: How about that phone call that you got, miss Richmond.
- 8:27Speaker 10: They told me twenty thousand dollars, they get it, they'll
- 8:30Speaker 10: let Tony go.
- 8:31Speaker 5: What else did they tell you?
- 8:32Speaker 10: That's all they had Tony, And then if I wanted
- 8:35Speaker 10: to see the gun alive, we'd have to pay twenty
- 8:37Speaker 10: thousand dollars.
- 8:38Speaker 6: What about the arrangements for delivering the money. Did you
- 8:40Speaker 6: discuss that at all?
- 8:42Speaker 5: No?
- 8:42Speaker 10: All he said was get twenty thousand dollars in small bills.
- 8:45Speaker 10: Said that too. He said he'd contact me later about
- 8:48Speaker 10: delivering the money. Officer I can't get that much money
- 8:52Speaker 10: together tonight.
- 8:53Speaker 8: I don't think you'll have to, ma'am. I'm pretty sure
- 8:55Speaker 8: the abductors know that too.
- 8:57Speaker 6: How about the voice on the phone, Miss Richmond, is
- 8:59Speaker 6: there any chances you might recognized it?
- 9:01Speaker 10: No, I haven't any idea who it was.
- 9:03Speaker 6: Or did he give you any hint at all as
- 9:04Speaker 6: to about how much time it should be allowed to
- 9:06Speaker 6: get the money together.
- 9:08Speaker 10: He said he'd call later on. I got the idea
- 9:12Speaker 10: he meant later on tonight. He told me to have
- 9:14Speaker 10: more instructions for me.
- 9:15Speaker 8: Then, I'd like to ask you once more, missus Richmond.
- 9:17Speaker 8: Can you think of anyone who might try something like
- 9:19Speaker 8: this and your husband? Maybe somebody who needed money he
- 9:22Speaker 8: will carry the grudge against.
- 9:23Speaker 10: Mister Richard, No one at all. Tony always got along
- 9:26Speaker 10: very well in business. He works hard, He works awfully hard.
- 9:32Speaker 10: I'm sorry. I I can't help thinking I'd the whole
- 9:35Speaker 10: thing'd be better all around if I just paid the
- 9:37Speaker 10: money and make him let my husband go.
- 9:39Speaker 6: No, No, it's just the point man. Like we said,
- 9:41Speaker 6: how do you know they're gonna let him go if
- 9:43Speaker 6: they can make twenty thousand dollars overnight? It's a good
- 9:45Speaker 6: bet they're not gonna let him go that easy. You
- 9:47Speaker 6: can't make those kind of deals with them. They'll believe us.
- 9:52Speaker 10: What can I do with anything?
- 9:55Speaker 11: I'm not your coffee down, good hot coffee. I looked
- 9:58Speaker 11: in on the children that were covered, and now you
- 10:00Speaker 11: trust some of his coffee?
- 10:01Speaker 10: Now, thank you, Dad. Well, what are we going to do? Officers?
- 10:06Speaker 10: We can't just sit here and wait.
- 10:08Speaker 8: There's a few things I'd like to brief you on.
- 10:09Speaker 8: The start with, Yes, it'll be a couple of our
- 10:12Speaker 8: men stationed here at all times. Another thing, do you
- 10:15Speaker 8: have more than one telephone in the house.
- 10:17Speaker 9: Yes, we do.
- 10:17Speaker 11: There's one here in the den, one in the kitchen.
- 10:19Speaker 11: Then we have a plug in extension for the living room.
- 10:21Speaker 8: Fine, the next time the phone rings you answer at
- 10:23Speaker 8: missus Richmond, one of us will be listening in on
- 10:25Speaker 8: the extension.
- 10:26Speaker 11: One in the kitchen. That'd be closest.
- 10:29Speaker 8: Now, if it's one of your husband's abductors calling you,
- 10:31Speaker 8: tell them it's going to take your time to raise
- 10:32Speaker 8: the money.
- 10:33Speaker 5: Tell him at least two days.
- 10:34Speaker 10: I suppose they insist, but they say they want it sooner.
- 10:37Speaker 10: They could kill my husband tonight.
- 10:39Speaker 6: Well they could, ma'am. But I don't think they will.
- 10:40Speaker 6: It's a pretty good bet that they've planned on some waiting.
- 10:43Speaker 6: Most people don't keep twenty thousand dollars around the house,
- 10:45Speaker 6: and they know as well as you do the banks
- 10:47Speaker 6: don't open till ten o'clock tomorrow morning.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Something else, missus Richmond.
- 10:50Speaker 8: Make it clear to them that you won't have any
- 10:51Speaker 8: direct hand in the transaction paying the ransom. Tell them
- 10:54Speaker 8: you're too sick, you're too upset, and that your brother
- 10:56Speaker 8: will take.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Care of everything.
- 10:58Speaker 8: You mean, one of your officers, Yeah, ma'am, Sergeant Friday
- 11:01Speaker 8: here can take care of that.
- 11:01Speaker 10: In well, they believe me. Don't you think they'll get suspicious?
- 11:04Speaker 6: Well maybe, but you have to remember, ma'am, suspicious or not,
- 11:07Speaker 6: they're only interested in getting the money and then getting away.
- 11:10Speaker 6: Our first problem is to get your husband home safe.
- 11:13Speaker 6: When we've got that done, we can worry about the abductors.
- 11:16Speaker 10: I see all right off here, old are all I
- 11:20Speaker 10: can here?
- 11:21Speaker 8: Fine, missus Richmond, I think you'll find it's the best way. Joe,
- 11:24Speaker 8: you and Romero be on duty here for the night.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Right.
- 11:26Speaker 8: You'll monitor all the incoming calls. We'll try and get
- 11:29Speaker 8: a trace around him. If you can keep the guy
- 11:30Speaker 8: talking on the line long enough, I'll make arrangements for
- 11:33Speaker 8: another phone line in here in the use of the
- 11:35Speaker 8: neighbors phone next door.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Okay, fine, do you know if the people next door
- 11:38Speaker 5: are home now? Sir?
- 11:39Speaker 11: Yes, sir, I think the name's Thompson. Almost positive their home?
- 11:42Speaker 5: Yeah, fine, all.
- 11:43Speaker 8: Right, missus Richmond, you want to take that, don't pick
- 11:44Speaker 8: it up till I tell you Joe over here at
- 11:47Speaker 8: this extension. Right, well, if you pick up your receivers
- 11:49Speaker 8: at the same time, you ready, Joe, right?
- 11:51Speaker 5: This is Richmond now, Hello Richmond. Yes, that's a shame.
- 11:58Speaker 9: This calls about your husband.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Richmond.
- 12:00Speaker 12: Here's your instructions about the money.
- 12:02Speaker 9: Do you want your husband back alive? Following I want
- 12:04Speaker 9: to tell you something.
- 12:06Speaker 5: I can't handle this alone.
- 12:08Speaker 9: The lady. Just listen. Hear the instructions.
- 12:10Speaker 13: I'm only going to sayhim once. Twenty thousands of small
- 12:13Speaker 13: bills by tomorrow, five tens and twenties. Bring the cops
- 12:16Speaker 13: in on this, and we'll kill your husband tonight and
- 12:18Speaker 13: I remember it. Get the rest of the instructions tomorrow.
- 12:20Speaker 5: Please listen.
- 12:21Speaker 10: Can I better help?
- 12:23Speaker 1: Hello?
- 12:25Speaker 5: A fast one wouldn't even give her a chance to talk.
- 12:27Speaker 11: What you say, sergeant?
- 12:28Speaker 5: What was it? Let's go back in there.
- 12:30Speaker 10: Yeah, you're hearing Lobson. You wouldn't let me talk, just
- 12:36Speaker 10: like the last time. I couldn't even tell him.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am, we heard now. Why don't you sit down
- 12:40Speaker 5: right here?
- 12:40Speaker 10: Said not to call the police, said they'd kill him tonight.
- 12:44Speaker 5: They killed tone grabber. I got her all N't you
- 12:47Speaker 5: want to clear the sofa off?
- 12:48Speaker 9: Yes, sir?
- 12:49Speaker 5: Who was too much for all? Right?
- 12:52Speaker 9: There we go.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you ought to call your family doctor.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Sir said that it might help her quite a bit,
- 12:57Speaker 5: get her a little rest anyway.
- 12:58Speaker 11: I already did, sir, see this coming.
- 13:00Speaker 9: I'll get a blanket, man, what do you think?
- 13:04Speaker 5: I only want twenty thousand by tomorrow?
- 13:05Speaker 6: Fives, tens, twenties, said more instructions coming, threatened to kill
- 13:09Speaker 6: Richmond if we moved.
- 13:10Speaker 5: In m how any sound like he meant it.
- 13:18Speaker 6: Twelve thirty five am, Captain Larrmon and I remained with
- 13:21Speaker 6: the phone. The family doctor arrived, gave missus Richmond a sedative,
- 13:25Speaker 6: and she lay down for a rest in her room. Barrett, Tom,
- 13:28Speaker 6: Bryan and Ben came back to the house just before
- 13:31Speaker 6: one am. They had a few more details on the
- 13:34Speaker 6: description of the car used by the abductors, which they'd
- 13:36Speaker 6: gotten from residence in the neighborhood. The information was relayed
- 13:40Speaker 6: to communications and the supplementary broadcast and an APB were
- 13:44Speaker 6: gotten out. Ben and I stood watch at the house
- 13:47Speaker 6: for the rest of the night, but there were no
- 13:48Speaker 6: more calls. In the early morning, stakeouts were set up
- 13:52Speaker 6: at the victim's place of business and also at the
- 13:54Speaker 6: banks where he maintained his accounts and safety deposit boxes.
- 13:59Speaker 6: That night, Ben and I still were at the Richmond place,
- 14:01Speaker 6: standing by at the phone. There'd been no contact from
- 14:04Speaker 6: the abductors during the day.
- 14:07Speaker 5: We waited midnight, three am, six am, no word.
- 14:15Speaker 6: Another day passed and then another still no contact, no
- 14:20Speaker 6: trace of mister Richmond or as abductors. Saturday, October thirteenth,
- 14:25Speaker 6: hope for the victim began to fade. Ben and I
- 14:27Speaker 6: stayed on at the Richmond house.
- 14:29Speaker 9: Say could I get you off?
- 14:30Speaker 11: Said something?
- 14:30Speaker 4: Eat?
- 14:30Speaker 11: Maybe a nice piece of cold beef in the ice box,
- 14:33Speaker 11: but make your sandwich?
- 14:34Speaker 5: No?
- 14:34Speaker 7: No thank how's missus Richmond?
- 14:36Speaker 5: Tonight?
- 14:37Speaker 7: Is she fitting any back?
- 14:38Speaker 5: My daughter?
- 14:38Speaker 9: No?
- 14:39Speaker 5: No better?
- 14:39Speaker 11: She took a couple of pills the doctor gave her
- 14:41Speaker 11: trying to get a few winks of sleep.
- 14:42Speaker 14: Oh well, there's no issue sitting up with a surf.
- 14:45Speaker 14: You'd like to get a little sleep yourself? No, I'd
- 14:47Speaker 14: just soon sit up. Couldn't sleep anyway. Yeah, don't suppose
- 14:51Speaker 14: either You would care for a little nipping.
- 14:53Speaker 7: Oh no, I ain't.
- 14:54Speaker 5: No thanks.
- 14:54Speaker 11: I guess you wouldn't mind if I had one myself.
- 14:57Speaker 9: It seems lately i'ds.
- 14:58Speaker 11: The only thing that relaxed.
- 14:59Speaker 7: I didn't go out ahead.
- 15:00Speaker 11: You get to be my age. A little bit of
- 15:02Speaker 11: help now and then. Oh, there's some new magazines on
- 15:05Speaker 11: the table there. I helped to pass the time for you.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Thank you, sir.
- 15:09Speaker 11: Three days now, not even a word about Tony. What
- 15:12Speaker 11: do you really think? Officers?
- 15:13Speaker 5: It's pretty hard to tell, mister Welman. We're doing everything
- 15:15Speaker 5: possible to find your son in law. There's not much
- 15:17Speaker 5: to go on so far.
- 15:19Speaker 11: Funny thing about Tony young fellow, ambitious, Look what happens? Yes,
- 15:24Speaker 11: wouldn't mind if I turn on the radio? Here would
- 15:26Speaker 11: and I'll keep it low right. Yeah, it's a funny
- 15:29Speaker 11: thing about Tony. Day he married my daughter, I knew
- 15:33Speaker 11: he was gonna make it right, fello. Tony sure have
- 15:37Speaker 11: been good to me. That's a sure thing. Took me
- 15:40Speaker 11: in right after the wife died. I was out of
- 15:42Speaker 11: work at the time. Been with him ever since, attend
- 15:45Speaker 11: the garden, kind of clean up things. Tony's always been
- 15:48Speaker 11: real good to me. No in law of trouble, nothing
- 15:50Speaker 11: like that. Look what happens, young fellas starts with almost nothing,
- 15:55Speaker 11: builds a good business, family, nice home.
- 15:59Speaker 9: Just look what happened.
- 16:00Speaker 5: There was no need to give up yet, sir, there's
- 16:02Speaker 5: a good chance he's still all right. I don't know.
- 16:04Speaker 11: I guess I just got a feeling about it about Tony.
- 16:07Speaker 11: He's a fine young man. Things like this always happened
- 16:12Speaker 11: to the fine young man. You take me for instance.
- 16:15Speaker 11: I wouldn't make money the way Tony does, build a
- 16:18Speaker 11: big business away he has. I guess that's why I've.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Never been in the trouble he's in.
- 16:21Speaker 11: And I don't think I follow you. I guess I
- 16:24Speaker 11: never wanted it, Sergeant, couldn't get interested in making money.
- 16:28Speaker 11: You break your back like Tony does. You work, and
- 16:30Speaker 11: you work, you get a big bank account, get the
- 16:32Speaker 11: home and the big car in the swimming pool. Worked
- 16:35Speaker 11: for it like Tony, did you work hard? You get
- 16:38Speaker 11: your big check book and everything you want? Just look
- 16:42Speaker 11: what happens. Poor Tony works night and day for the money.
- 16:46Speaker 11: Right now, he's no better off than the guy who's
- 16:48Speaker 11: only worth a dime. They don't hold beggars for ransom,
- 16:51Speaker 11: do they?
- 16:52Speaker 5: Excuse me?
- 16:52Speaker 9: Sir?
- 16:53Speaker 5: I wonder if you have an extra book of matches around.
- 16:54Speaker 5: I believe I'm auth sure things.
- 16:56Speaker 11: Sergeant got some in the kitchen. I'm sure you wouldn't
- 16:59Speaker 11: care for a little nibe. Those are those things I
- 17:02Speaker 11: think guy might if it helps now and.
- 17:04Speaker 7: Then, then yeah, wonder what he means by every now
- 17:09Speaker 7: and then?
- 17:10Speaker 5: If you want to grab the extension on the kitchen, right,
- 17:12Speaker 5: what'll I say?
- 17:13Speaker 9: Huh?
- 17:15Speaker 6: Now?
- 17:17Speaker 9: Hello sunset?
- 17:21Speaker 5: Yeah that's right.
- 17:22Speaker 9: Where's missus Richmond?
- 17:24Speaker 5: No?
- 17:24Speaker 9: Not right now?
- 17:25Speaker 5: This is her brother talking.
- 17:26Speaker 6: Is there any message I want to talk to missus Richmond? Wellus,
- 17:30Speaker 6: he's not here. You got a message for? Well, it's
- 17:33Speaker 6: their brother talking. You'd like to leave a message for
- 17:36Speaker 6: missus Richmond?
- 17:36Speaker 9: I said, this isn't their brother talking. I know his
- 17:38Speaker 9: voice always is.
- 17:40Speaker 5: Well, maybe you can tell me who you are, Tony Richmond.
- 17:42Speaker 9: Where's my way?
- 17:43Speaker 5: Richmond?
- 17:43Speaker 9: Where are you?
- 17:44Speaker 5: Where are you?
- 17:46Speaker 9: I got away from the way out in the vallere
- 17:48Speaker 9: Dary range. Your su pervid you cop?
- 17:50Speaker 5: Where can we find you?
- 17:52Speaker 9: About a mile telegraph road the middle of a dairy farm,
- 17:56Speaker 9: your cops. You drive out with the red light on
- 17:58Speaker 9: and ongo on.
- 17:59Speaker 5: How soon can we meet?
- 18:00Speaker 9: Half hour? Get out of your gun and stand right
- 18:03Speaker 9: in front of the headlights. I'll be watching. I want
- 18:05Speaker 9: to get a good luck at all?
- 18:06Speaker 5: Right? Half an hour?
- 18:07Speaker 9: Something else? I got hold of a gun and if
- 18:09Speaker 9: you're not cops, I'll know what to do.
- 18:21Speaker 4: You are listening to Dragnet authentic cases from official police files.
- 18:26Speaker 6: After we got the call from the man who identified
- 18:39Speaker 6: himself as the victim of the abduction, Tony Richmond, we
- 18:42Speaker 6: put in a call for Captain Warman. We told him
- 18:45Speaker 6: about the phone call from the victim, his request for
- 18:47Speaker 6: us to pick him up, and also about the conditions.
- 18:50Speaker 6: He stipulated that we follow. The Captain ordered three cruiser
- 18:53Speaker 6: cars and a car to pick up Ben and me
- 18:56Speaker 6: and take us to the location specified in the phone conversation.
- 19:00Speaker 5: Two a m. With the red light turned on.
- 19:02Speaker 6: We pulled up at the approximate location indicated was a
- 19:06Speaker 6: lonely spot on a lonely road a little more than
- 19:08Speaker 6: a mile off the nearest highway.
- 19:10Speaker 5: We waited. We didn't know what to expect.
- 19:13Speaker 6: It could be that the phone call supposedly from Tony
- 19:16Speaker 6: Richmond had actually been made by one of the abductors.
- 19:19Speaker 6: Could be that it was nothing more than a diversionary
- 19:21Speaker 6: action intended to distract our attention while the abductors carried
- 19:25Speaker 6: out their plans to obtain the ransom money from the
- 19:27Speaker 6: victim's wife and make good their escape.
- 19:31Speaker 5: We kept waiting. Ben sounded the horn at frequent intervals.
- 19:35Speaker 6: Captain Lorman and myself stood up in front of the
- 19:37Speaker 6: car and the glare of the headlights. Ten minutes went by,
- 19:41Speaker 6: fifteen minutes. Finally, a half a dozen yards down the road,
- 19:45Speaker 6: we spotted a man climbing up the side of the
- 19:47Speaker 6: drainage ditch and onto the road. He walked slowly toward us,
- 19:50Speaker 6: into the glare of the headlights. In his right hand
- 19:53Speaker 6: he held a gun.
- 19:56Speaker 5: You can put the gun down, mister, go the police.
- 19:59Speaker 9: Show me.
- 20:00Speaker 5: Here's our car, here's our identification. Here you are badge
- 20:05Speaker 5: ID card. Thank god, thank god, thank god.
- 20:14Speaker 6: The first thing we did was to notify the victim's
- 20:17Speaker 6: wife and family that he'd been found and that he
- 20:19Speaker 6: was unharmed. Then we called the office and told them
- 20:22Speaker 6: what had happened. We offered to drive Richmond to his
- 20:24Speaker 6: home immediately, but he told us that he was all
- 20:27Speaker 6: right and insisted that he show us where the abductors had.
- 20:29Speaker 5: Held him captive.
- 20:31Speaker 6: We got in the car and started driving north along
- 20:33Speaker 6: a dirt road that led off Sepulvida. On the way,
- 20:37Speaker 6: Richmond briefed us on what had happened. He said that
- 20:39Speaker 6: he'd been taken at gunpoint at the front door of
- 20:41Speaker 6: his home four nights before, forced into a car by
- 20:44Speaker 6: two men that he'd failed to recognize, and then driven
- 20:47Speaker 6: to an abandoned shack in a deserted area in the
- 20:50Speaker 6: San Fernando Valley. The two men had tied him hand
- 20:53Speaker 6: and foot, partially stripped him, gagged him, and placed him
- 20:56Speaker 6: under a floor of the shack, and left him there.
- 20:59Speaker 6: One of the men returned each day to give him
- 21:00Speaker 6: something to eat. That night, Richmond told us that his
- 21:04Speaker 6: captor failed to retie his hands securely. When the man left,
- 21:08Speaker 6: Richmond succeeded in freeing himself from the ropes, made his
- 21:11Speaker 6: way to a phone and called his house outside a
- 21:14Speaker 6: shock and exposure.
- 21:15Speaker 5: He seemed to be all right. After pointing out.
- 21:18Speaker 6: The shack he'd been held captive in, and after we'd
- 21:20Speaker 6: checked through it, Richmond was taken home in one of
- 21:23Speaker 6: the cruiser cars. Ben and I remained on stakeout of
- 21:26Speaker 6: the shack.
- 21:30Speaker 5: Pred he died.
- 21:31Speaker 11: Can you see the shack all right from here?
- 21:33Speaker 9: Just about?
- 21:33Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 21:34Speaker 6: Keep an eye field on the road. Huh yeah, all smokeka.
- 21:47Speaker 6: We waited, nothing happened. Three am, three thirty no sign
- 21:56Speaker 6: of the suspects. Four thirty five am five twelve am.
- 22:05Speaker 6: Ben spotted the headlights of a car at least a
- 22:07Speaker 6: mile down the road. We watched them come toward us.
- 22:11Speaker 6: When it got close enough, we saw it was a
- 22:13Speaker 6: dark colored late model Sedan. It fitted the description of
- 22:16Speaker 6: the abductor's car perfectly. It swung off the dirt road
- 22:20Speaker 6: and pulled to a stop near the shack. One man
- 22:23Speaker 6: got out. All right, let's go, all.
- 22:37Speaker 5: Right, mister police officers. Hold it right there down Joe
- 22:41Speaker 5: see him?
- 22:41Speaker 9: Ben?
- 22:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I dug behind his car.
- 22:43Speaker 1: All right, throught your gun.
- 22:45Speaker 5: I'll give him back.
- 22:48Speaker 7: You got some good cover, Joe.
- 22:49Speaker 5: Let's go, Come on, move in easy. There's my car
- 22:57Speaker 5: up from behind the car.
- 22:58Speaker 7: Hands behind your head, government, Joe, I'll shake him off
- 23:03Speaker 7: right all right? Hold it right there, okay, Joe Eastling,
- 23:08Speaker 7: all right, has behind you.
- 23:12Speaker 5: Sure like to play it safe, don't you.
- 23:13Speaker 7: Handcuffs they work pretty good, mister, much better than rope.
- 23:21Speaker 5: We called the office.
- 23:22Speaker 6: A relief team came out to replace us on steakeout,
- 23:25Speaker 6: and we took the suspect downtown to the interrogation room.
- 23:29Speaker 6: He was checked through R and I and identified as
- 23:31Speaker 6: Gerald Adams, a one time loser. Together with Barrett and Bryan,
- 23:35Speaker 6: we questioned the suspect for three hours. He refused to
- 23:39Speaker 6: admit that he had any part in the abduction of
- 23:41Speaker 6: Tony Richmond.
- 23:42Speaker 5: We gave up for the time being, took.
- 23:45Speaker 6: Him to the main jail, where he was booked on
- 23:47Speaker 6: suspicion of kidnapping. A little after eleven am, Gerald adams
- 23:51Speaker 6: partner showed up out of the shack in the valley.
- 23:54Speaker 6: He was taken into custody, was brought downtown, confronted with
- 23:58Speaker 6: the evidence against him, and he gave us a statement
- 24:00Speaker 6: admitting his guilt. Late that afternoon, we went back to
- 24:04Speaker 6: the main jail, signed out Adams for investigation, brought him
- 24:07Speaker 6: back to the interrogation room.
- 24:11Speaker 7: I have a seat, Adams.
- 24:15Speaker 9: Okay, what is it this time?
- 24:16Speaker 5: Same as before? Adams? What do you say you're gonna
- 24:18Speaker 5: tell us about it? I told you my story this morning.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Mister you got it off, but maybe you'd like to know.
- 24:24Speaker 5: We picked up your partner and he gave us a
- 24:25Speaker 5: science statement. Here's a copy of it.
- 24:27Speaker 9: Have a lot.
- 24:29Speaker 7: Donald black and white. If Pardner says you were in
- 24:32Speaker 7: it with him all the way, would say, Adam.
- 24:37Speaker 15: Doesn't mean anything to me. He probably forced it at him. Well,
- 24:39Speaker 15: that's not what he says. He blames the whole thing
- 24:41Speaker 15: on you.
- 24:41Speaker 6: Says you set up the deal, you gave the orders,
- 24:43Speaker 6: you made the phone calls for the ransom money.
- 24:46Speaker 5: Says that's the way he's gonna tell it in court.
- 24:48Speaker 5: He's gonna need a lot of proof, and gave it
- 24:50Speaker 5: to us.
- 24:50Speaker 7: He showed us your apartment, a couple of ransom notes
- 24:52Speaker 7: you'd readen, showed us the typewriter you wrote him on,
- 24:55Speaker 7: showed us the clothes you wore the night you grabbed
- 24:56Speaker 7: mister Richmond.
- 24:57Speaker 5: He's a liar, not according to Dark Crime reason.
- 25:01Speaker 6: They checked over the clothes found particles of dirt and pollen,
- 25:04Speaker 6: and the trouser cuffs they match up with samples we
- 25:06Speaker 6: took from that field out to the shack.
- 25:08Speaker 5: Well, it ain't true, None of it's true. You guy's
- 25:10Speaker 5: a liar. Well, there's a statement at him. It's all aired.
- 25:15Speaker 5: You got any corrections in the story, Now is the
- 25:17Speaker 5: time to make them, Adam, There's only one thing I
- 25:21Speaker 5: want to know. Yeah, how did it happen? How'd you
- 25:24Speaker 5: get a line on us? Richmond got away from the shack.
- 25:26Speaker 5: We staked out them until you came along.
- 25:29Speaker 7: Figure couldn't have gotten away.
- 25:31Speaker 5: I had it all worked out.
- 25:32Speaker 7: Your partner didn't.
- 25:33Speaker 15: I showed him just what to do, how to handle
- 25:35Speaker 15: a thing. I showed him where to hide. Richmond couldn't
- 25:37Speaker 15: have goofed up. I showed him the whole routine. It
- 25:39Speaker 15: was one thing you didn't show him. Yeah, how to
- 25:42Speaker 15: tie on that?
- 25:50Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true, only the
- 25:53Speaker 2: names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 25:56Speaker 4: On December eighteenth, trial was held in Superior Court Department
- 25:59Speaker 4: that he said, City and County of Los Angeles, State
- 26:01Speaker 4: of California. In a moment, the results of that trial,
- 26:13Speaker 4: Gerald Adams and his accomplice in the abduction of Tony
- 26:16Speaker 4: Richmond were tried and convicted in Superior Court of kidnapping.
- 26:20Speaker 4: The state Penal Code stipulates that kidnapping for the purpose
- 26:23Speaker 4: of extorting money is punishable either by death or by
- 26:26Speaker 4: imprisonment in the state penitentiary. From twenty five years to lfe.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Both Adams and his partner are now serving life terms
- 26:33Speaker 4: in the state Penitentiary. Wholesome California Ladies and Gentlemen. One
- 26:39Speaker 4: of the first contributions to the special five million dollar
- 26:42Speaker 4: Red Cross flood relief appeal was two dollars and seven
- 26:46Speaker 4: cents pennies and nickels from two nine year old playmates
- 26:49Speaker 4: in Kansas City, Missouri. Stepping up to the reception desk
- 26:53Speaker 4: in the Kansas City Red Cross Chapter, the pair proudly
- 26:56Speaker 4: offered their earnings gained from touring neighborhood streets, recite and
- 27:00Speaker 4: singing nursery rhymes. The money the Red Cross provides for
- 27:04Speaker 4: rebuilding a house or refurnishing it, or for helping a
- 27:07Speaker 4: family find the means to help itself will be given outright,
- 27:12Speaker 4: not lent.
- 27:14Speaker 2: These were the words of President Truman in asking the
- 27:17Speaker 2: American public to contribute at least five million dollars to
- 27:21Speaker 2: the Red Cross to aid the disaster stricken people of Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma,
- 27:26Speaker 2: and Illinois. Won't you help through your local Red Cross chapter?
- 27:40Speaker 4: You have just heard Dragnet a series of authentic cases
- 27:43Speaker 4: from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office of
- 27:46Speaker 4: Chief of Police wh Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
- 27:53Speaker 9: Stay tuned for Counterspy next over NBC.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Welcome Back. Sometimes you have to work to solve the mystery.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Sometimes it kind of solves itself, as the kidnapping plan
- 28:08Speaker 1: fell apart due to an incompetent accomplice and a resourceful victim.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I will admit to some ignorance about the origin of
- 28:16Speaker 1: this title, whether it was a fan title or whether
- 28:20Speaker 1: it was something official. If it's not a fan title,
- 28:23Speaker 1: it does suggest the script may have come in behind schedule,
- 28:27Speaker 1: leaving no time to think of an actual title. And
- 28:31Speaker 1: there's another episode with a similar title the big Almost
- 28:35Speaker 1: no script and no script would be a problem for
- 28:38Speaker 1: a detective program, particularly Dragnet. One does it improv Dragnet.
- 28:43Speaker 1: But I think we may never appreciate how hard it
- 28:46Speaker 1: was for radio writers to turn out scripts week after
- 28:50Speaker 1: week on programs that didn't take breaks, and then to
- 28:53Speaker 1: have those scripts be of as high quality as what
- 28:58Speaker 1: we enjoy on most of the programs. It's an incredible
- 29:02Speaker 1: amount of writing and rewriting, usually down to one or
- 29:06Speaker 1: two writers. All right, Well, listener comments and feedback. Now,
- 29:10Speaker 1: Harrison writes, I feel, and this is regarding the Big Setup.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I feel, if you're going to go through the trouble
- 29:16Speaker 1: of staking out places to rob, then you should probably
- 29:18Speaker 1: skip the ones with living maids. But who am I
- 29:21Speaker 1: to critique criminals supposedly at the top of their profession.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I hear you, Harrison, and I would tend to think
- 29:29Speaker 1: so as well, though I do hate to tell anyone
- 29:32Speaker 1: their business, and I think it is fair to say,
- 29:35Speaker 1: based on the number of burglaries that they pulled off,
- 29:40Speaker 1: with very high value items being stolen, they were probably
- 29:45Speaker 1: at the top of their profession. But sometimes there are
- 29:48Speaker 1: holes in your processes, and sometimes you have success and
- 29:54Speaker 1: that makes you cauky and you make mistakes as a
- 29:57Speaker 1: result of that. We can't really say for sure what
- 30:00Speaker 1: happened here, but I suspect one of those two. And
- 30:03Speaker 1: then we have a couple of comments on YouTube regarding
- 30:07Speaker 1: the Big Love Sarge seven to one four rights. Hello Adam,
- 30:10Speaker 1: thank you for bringing us this episode of Dragnet, and
- 30:14Speaker 1: Alfred writes thanks for the PSA at the beginning. Thanks Alfred.
- 30:18Speaker 1: As I said at the beginning, I don't want to
- 30:20Speaker 1: overuse trigger warnings or things of that sort, but when
- 30:24Speaker 1: this series itself, when it was originally broadcast, had a warning,
- 30:28Speaker 1: it's probably a good idea to pass that along. End
- 30:32Speaker 1: affirm that. All right, Well, now it is time to
- 30:36Speaker 1: thank our Patreon supporter of the day, and I want
- 30:40Speaker 1: to thank real udon Noodle Patreon supporter since December twenty
- 30:43Speaker 1: twenty four, currently supporting the podcast at the Shawmas level
- 30:47Speaker 1: of four dollars or more per month. Thanks so much
- 30:49Speaker 1: for your support and that will do it for today.

- 31:10Speaker 1: back here tomorrow for yours truly, Johnny dall or where
- 31:13Speaker 1: Johnny Dollar.
- 31:15Speaker 12: This is Barry Winters, it Master's Insurance and trust.
- 31:17Speaker 9: Oh Hi, Barry, it's been here, sure.
- 31:19Speaker 12: Johnny, because we don't usually have trouble with our accounts.
- 31:22Speaker 2: You mean you didn't, huh until now?
- 31:24Speaker 12: Well, yeah, I'm afraid that's about the size of it,
- 31:26Speaker 12: and this time it's bad trouble me a simplex tackle company,
- 31:30Speaker 12: Johnny over in.
- 31:31Speaker 9: Danbury fishing tackle that's right.
- 31:33Speaker 7: Oh, how come I never heard of them?
- 31:35Speaker 12: A little small outfit to kind of glorified partnership.
- 31:39Speaker 9: What's that mean?
- 31:39Speaker 12: What's owned by nine men? One of them Hanley Thomas's president.
- 31:44Speaker 12: The others are secretary treasurer and a flock of vice president.
- 31:47Speaker 9: So what's happened?
- 31:48Speaker 12: Well, the nine of them, plus the twenty or thirty
- 31:50Speaker 12: workers of the plant are all covered by a group
- 31:53Speaker 12: life insurance deal.
