- 0:00Speaker 1: Is that true? I don't know. I wouldn't went with Pacific.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Do we know the answer, Peanut? Why you put it
- 0:05Speaker 1: on me? I thought that's your answer. You're supposed to
- 0:07Speaker 1: know that, you're supposed to know the answer to your questions.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Doesn't the Pacific? Yes, it is the Pacific. Oh my god,
- 0:17Speaker 1: you're not terrible. I need a new I need a
- 0:19Speaker 1: new co host. You don't even know the answer to
- 0:20Speaker 1: these questions. Well, I thought it was specific, but then
- 0:23Speaker 1: he said Atlantic, and I was like, I mean he
- 0:24Speaker 1: doesn't have a document smart right now? I thought I did.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Sometimes I don't trust my my lower level killing me begon,
- 0:32Speaker 1: I don't. Oh my god, thank you all for tuning
- 0:41Speaker 1: in to another episode of the NFL Players Second Acts Podcast.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I'm Peanut Toman and as always, I got my guy
- 0:50Speaker 1: with me, Roman Salt and Pepper Beer Harper, what's up
- 0:54Speaker 1: with it? It's good man? What's good with you? Peanuts?
- 0:57Speaker 1: Good having you back? Yeah, a little bit today, I'm
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'm really excited because I'm not the only Salt and
- 1:03Speaker 1: Pepper Beard brother on the pot today. No, no, no,
- 1:08Speaker 1: we we gotta we we gotta we got a good one.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Um let me let me let me read his resume
- 1:13Speaker 1: real quick. Uh. He's a former wide receiver, first round
- 1:17Speaker 1: pick in the ninety eight draft, played six NFL seasons
- 1:20Speaker 1: for the Titans and the Panthers. He's been a part
- 1:24Speaker 1: of two of the most memorable plays in NFL history.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Um After his NFL career, he got into education, where
- 1:33Speaker 1: he earned two master's degrees and he holds a doctorate
- 1:38Speaker 1: in education. Please welcome our guest, Kevin Joe Clark, Dr Dyson.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I like that. I like that, Joel. I ain't put
- 1:49Speaker 1: no hands on nobody yet, but you know why not.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Why don't you put hands on these little kids? Put
- 1:56Speaker 1: my kids every chance I get, Boy, they are bad.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I know that's right. You know I got bills to pay.
- 2:02Speaker 1: You know we're in the climbing now. You can't hardly
- 2:04Speaker 1: say anything to anybody anymore but a Rome. I loved
- 2:07Speaker 1: the salt pepper. Brother, you know you gotta keep it going.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I call it for a little while. Now I'm proudly
- 2:12Speaker 1: wearing the salt pepper. Don't just get over. The only
- 2:20Speaker 1: difference between yours is you probably got yours. I don't know.
- 2:25Speaker 1: A year or two ago, Rome been rocking and salt
- 2:27Speaker 1: and pepper. He came out of the wound with a
- 2:30Speaker 1: salt and pepper. Rome came out of the womb looking
- 2:32Speaker 1: like Benjamin Button Boy. He looked old when he came out,
- 2:35Speaker 1: and he just was great and everything. That is always
- 2:41Speaker 1: talking because Peanut loves to uh how did they say,
- 2:45Speaker 1: loves trying to start stuff with me about my gray air.
- 2:48Speaker 1: He's offered up money many times and no, I'm not
- 2:51Speaker 1: dying it. So let's go. Yeah, so I uh, let's well,
- 2:57Speaker 1: we'll get right into this thing real quick. Dr Diyke,
- 2:59Speaker 1: Can I call you? Do people? Do you correct? People
- 3:02Speaker 1: with the doctor party you just told him? Call you
- 3:03Speaker 1: Mr Dison, Dr Dyson, um man just calling whatever. You
- 3:07Speaker 1: don't call me out my name. I've had I've had
- 3:10Speaker 1: people defend me though. I had a lot of parents
- 3:12Speaker 1: and friends defend me. Uh like, no, he's doctor Dison now,
- 3:16Speaker 1: but me, it don't matter, man, I tell you like this, Uh,
- 3:21Speaker 1: getting that those initials before my name was one of
- 3:23Speaker 1: the greatest accomplishments I could ever have done personally. And
- 3:27Speaker 1: I don't necessarily I didn't ever say do it for
- 3:30Speaker 1: the name the monica. I just did it for the
- 3:32Speaker 1: challenge and that side of football. To be able to
- 3:36Speaker 1: accomplish something like that, that's what it was about for me. So,
- 3:38Speaker 1: but I ain't gonna lie. It's kind of huge. Yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 1: it's cool though, So I'm gonna call you, hey, Dr
- 3:44Speaker 1: I like I like it too. That was one of
- 3:46Speaker 1: the big things we talked about doctor Dr Dyson before
- 3:50Speaker 1: we got on with you, Mr Kevin Dyson, was that,
- 3:53Speaker 1: do you know once he earned the doctor the fact
- 3:55Speaker 1: that you went to school, you did all that. Like
- 3:58Speaker 1: at that point, man, we gotta call you that because
- 4:00Speaker 1: that's hard work, that's time put in, and the most
- 4:02Speaker 1: people that earn it usually kind of go back. At
- 4:04Speaker 1: least that's what we said we would. So yeah, I
- 4:07Speaker 1: appreciate respect you put the hard work in. So I'm
- 4:09Speaker 1: gonna Dr Dyson is all right, So listen, I'm gonna
- 4:13Speaker 1: get right into it. I'm gonna cut the chase. So,
- 4:14Speaker 1: as I said, involved in two of the most memorable
- 4:17Speaker 1: players in NFL history, first the Music City Miracle, to
- 4:21Speaker 1: kick the Trick, kick return play whatever. So I know
- 4:25Speaker 1: you talked about this mania times, but I just want
- 4:27Speaker 1: to know, Uh, wasn't really a forward pass? No no, no, no, no,
- 4:34Speaker 1: look at that. Now take me and frank out of
- 4:37Speaker 1: the picture. Look at the flight of the ball. You
- 4:40Speaker 1: look at the flight of the football is look at
- 4:42Speaker 1: the flag football, it's slightly back. Look at that. So
- 4:47Speaker 1: you go by the flight of the rules and the
- 4:50Speaker 1: rule book is the flight of football is not the person.
- 4:55Speaker 1: So by that definition is definitely a labable. Were you
- 5:00Speaker 1: was supposed to be on the field, Like, how did that?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Who came up with that play? Um? So Alan Lowry,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I guess he had run at at um University of
- 5:07Speaker 1: Texas where he went to school, had run something similar
- 5:10Speaker 1: back in the sixties, I believe sixties or sevenes. And
- 5:14Speaker 1: now I wasn't supposed to be on the field. So
- 5:16Speaker 1: that was something you know how it is on Saturday mornings,
- 5:18Speaker 1: you're going to walk through you're going through situational football,
- 5:21Speaker 1: two minute drill, sudden change and you're doing something like
- 5:24Speaker 1: that and you gotta win plays. Um. That was something
- 5:28Speaker 1: that we always worked on on Saturdays, one of the
- 5:30Speaker 1: last things we did. And I was a starting my
- 5:32Speaker 1: serious I want to kickoff return team or nothing like
- 5:34Speaker 1: other than hands that was all I was on. So
- 5:37Speaker 1: I was one of those players, like you know, I
- 5:39Speaker 1: had one ft on the field, one ft and the
- 5:41Speaker 1: door ready to go, and um, you know you watch it,
- 5:44Speaker 1: you see what they what they do. But at the
- 5:46Speaker 1: end of the day, you're like, we're not really gonna
- 5:47Speaker 1: run this. It's like when the situation is going to
- 5:49Speaker 1: present itself when you're gonna run this play right. And
- 5:54Speaker 1: Derek Mason had gone out. I think he got concussed
- 5:58Speaker 1: on a punt return around that time. He that was happening.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I went in to get I V. I was dehydrad.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I had been diluting myself, going figure, its cold and
- 6:08Speaker 1: I've just been drinking too much water and just was
- 6:10Speaker 1: diluting myself and so I was cramping up. So I
- 6:13Speaker 1: went in to get I V. Run time he's being concussed.
- 6:16Speaker 1: His backup, Tony Anthony Dorset Jr. Um was cramping up
- 6:23Speaker 1: at the end of the game. It couldn't run. So
- 6:25Speaker 1: was like outside, you guys are terribly hydrated everywhere. I mean,
- 6:35Speaker 1: I learned this later. I didn't have another electric like
- 6:37Speaker 1: a drinking too much water and so he and he
- 6:40Speaker 1: couldn't run, and they called me, I guess because you know,
- 6:43Speaker 1: I can't return to college and I did some of
- 6:45Speaker 1: my rookie year some point return and stuff like that.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So Jeff Fisher and a Lowry came up to me
- 6:50Speaker 1: and they started saying, we're gonna run home and throw back.
- 6:52Speaker 1: You're gonna go in there for Mason and uh Ice
- 6:55Speaker 1: and Birds gonna slide over. They're gonna get the squid.
- 6:58Speaker 1: We're gonna give it to Frank. He's gonna laterate. So
- 6:59Speaker 1: they running this whole thing down to me. So the
- 7:02Speaker 1: gis now I wastly supposed to get the lateral, let
- 7:06Speaker 1: alone be in there. So the gist of the play is,
- 7:09Speaker 1: you know, in some situations you play for a squib.
- 7:11Speaker 1: When we put Frank in, he had great hand to
- 7:14Speaker 1: play for a squib, and then he does what he
- 7:15Speaker 1: does well. The number one returnment, if you will, the
- 7:18Speaker 1: furthest away from Frank, which would have been Isaac Bird.
- 7:21Speaker 1: It is supposed to get the lateral. My job was
- 7:24Speaker 1: to get in pitch relationship with him as he ran
- 7:27Speaker 1: down the field. If he gets in trouble, pitch to me,
- 7:29Speaker 1: I get what I get, Get out of bounds or whatever.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Kick the field goal. Well, they bloomed it. Christie bloomed it.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And so when he did that, I don't know if
- 7:37Speaker 1: Isaac who hadn't really run to play from that position
- 7:40Speaker 1: at all. I don't know why I haven't talked to
- 7:43Speaker 1: him in twenty years about it. We okay, I just
- 7:45Speaker 1: never asked him. And he comes up to field it
- 7:48Speaker 1: and he gets stumbles on. Now I'm just last man standing.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Frank threw it to this day, on Frank and tell
- 7:54Speaker 1: me all he wants to. He didn't know who was
- 7:55Speaker 1: over there. He just threw it and I caught him
- 7:57Speaker 1: in and it opened up. It was just all I
- 7:59Speaker 1: had to do with run. That was the easy part. Well,
- 8:01Speaker 1: I promise you they didn't think Frank was gonna score though,
- 8:04Speaker 1: that's why you probably do it so so so that
- 8:06Speaker 1: was another thing. So Number one, first time hearing this
- 8:09Speaker 1: all this story, because I remember this place specifically, the
- 8:12Speaker 1: fact that like two people busted makes me laugh, right,
- 8:16Speaker 1: like you never know that by the way it worked out, like,
- 8:19Speaker 1: actually it wasn't even supposed to go that way, but
- 8:20Speaker 1: that's usually how football is. Number Two, My my real
- 8:24Speaker 1: question to you is that why did the whole defense
- 8:28Speaker 1: go over there with Frank witche Did they think he
- 8:30Speaker 1: was gonna crib it or something like? They all went
- 8:32Speaker 1: over there and then next you know, you were wide
- 8:34Speaker 1: open by yourself with a couple of blockers out there
- 8:36Speaker 1: in front of you. It's just so crazy watching it
- 8:38Speaker 1: on TV. I'm like, but looking back on I'm like,
- 8:40Speaker 1: hundsight is always twenty. I'm like, why did everybody go
- 8:44Speaker 1: with Frank wait? Check like he just going or something?
- 8:47Speaker 1: You know, I want to ask that question. This this
- 8:49Speaker 1: is my philosophy on that whole thing. We have been
- 8:52Speaker 1: pretty much dominating the whole game. The score wasn't depicting
- 8:55Speaker 1: of that, like you know what I mean. We it
- 8:57Speaker 1: was a close game, but we pretty much we're controlling
- 9:00Speaker 1: that game up until midway through the fourth quarter. And
- 9:03Speaker 1: then they got to touchdown late in the game to
- 9:05Speaker 1: take the league. And I think because it was such
- 9:08Speaker 1: a hard fig game, they were just anxious to end it,
- 9:12Speaker 1: you know, get to get to make the play, make
- 9:14Speaker 1: us go. You know, we didn't have much time left.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You the odds of us going length to the field
- 9:19Speaker 1: or go forty fifty yards to get a field goal range.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I felt like they were like, I'm gonna head and
- 9:24Speaker 1: gonna make this place. And they got out of position
- 9:26Speaker 1: and all that did was run because I had a
- 9:28Speaker 1: wall of people, so you know, my my job. Literally,
- 9:31Speaker 1: I literally did not get touched too start celebrating. That's
- 9:33Speaker 1: how that's how how much out of position they were.
- 9:37Speaker 1: They had to break a tackle, nothing, they just all sawball,
- 9:41Speaker 1: went ball and got out of position. All right. Now,
- 9:45Speaker 1: we heard one of your teachers made a meme of
- 9:48Speaker 1: the last place and it's a frame on your desk.
- 9:51Speaker 1: That's cool. Yeah, yeah, is still there? Yea? Is that
- 9:56Speaker 1: just a constant reminder that you just one yard short,
- 9:59Speaker 1: just a little short reminder of like I want to
- 10:04Speaker 1: know that. What is that reminder? Uh man, it's like this.
- 10:08Speaker 1: You know, he can't take the good without taking a
- 10:11Speaker 1: bad and you got there's lessons in both. And I
- 10:14Speaker 1: tell people all the time, I think I learned more
- 10:15Speaker 1: from that than I did. You see a miracle, like,
- 10:18Speaker 1: let me say a miracle like I told you I
- 10:20Speaker 1: was supposed to be a part of it that didn't happen.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I was supposed to. I get it. I'm I'm on TV.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Everybody's talking about me the Super Bowl. I'm in the progression.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I think I'm in. It's end of the game. It's
- 10:31Speaker 1: the first time, especially in the pros, but from anything
- 10:34Speaker 1: in sports, and I can remember that I did not
- 10:37Speaker 1: get it done. That I was not successful at the
- 10:39Speaker 1: I'm talking about having to hit two free throws at
- 10:42Speaker 1: the end of the game to win like k kicks
- 10:45Speaker 1: and soccer game winning catches. In football, that was the
- 10:47Speaker 1: first time in my athletic life that I can remember.
- 10:50Speaker 1: It is the biggest game of my life. And so
- 10:52Speaker 1: you know, there's there's a lot of life lessons in that,
- 10:55Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Because you just never know
- 10:57Speaker 1: when your opportunity is gonna come. You gotta be ready
- 10:58Speaker 1: for it. And when they do come and you're not successful,
- 11:01Speaker 1: what do you do for him? From that point on?
- 11:03Speaker 1: And that next off season? Man, y'all know, y'all trained
- 11:06Speaker 1: man that that focus now that I wasn't focused before,
- 11:09Speaker 1: but that focus was hyper. Man. I just was like,
- 11:12Speaker 1: I want to get back to that moment so bad
- 11:14Speaker 1: and and just to prove that if nobody else myself,
- 11:17Speaker 1: that I can get it done. I put a lot
- 11:19Speaker 1: of a lot of weight, a lot of pressure on
- 11:21Speaker 1: myself for not scoring. I blame myself for a lot.
- 11:23Speaker 1: And you know, I've watched that play a million times
- 11:26Speaker 1: on highlights. I've watched the game still and watched the
- 11:28Speaker 1: game and its entirety. Um, but that plays played every year.
- 11:32Speaker 1: People see it and then they've asked me this question,
- 11:34Speaker 1: like what could have done differently in this and that
- 11:36Speaker 1: and and I've dissected plenty of times. I don't. He
- 11:39Speaker 1: just Mike Joels made a good play, man. He just
- 11:42Speaker 1: sometimes you got took your hat and the guy makes
- 11:44Speaker 1: a good play, and that's what it is. Yeah. So
- 11:49Speaker 1: I've been accessed numerous times like having you know, I
- 11:52Speaker 1: didn't I didn't go to a great football I didn't
- 11:56Speaker 1: go to a great school known for football and lost
- 11:58Speaker 1: a lot of games. Still got drafted play thirteen years,
- 12:01Speaker 1: made my place, kind of made a name for myself.
- 12:04Speaker 1: And people always ask me what would you change? And
- 12:07Speaker 1: I give him the same answer. I wouldn't change anything.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I think things happen the way they were for me,
- 12:14Speaker 1: and I know some people they do change that. So,
- 12:16Speaker 1: knowing your place in NFL history with those two plays, Um,
- 12:22Speaker 1: if you could, if you could trade them in for
- 12:23Speaker 1: a longer career, would you do that? Man, you hit
- 12:27Speaker 1: the nerve. I'm gonna tell you, peanut, so Hey, I
- 12:30Speaker 1: thought this a lot, like Okay, my counterpart was Derek
- 12:34Speaker 1: Mason and that was running mate and we did a
- 12:37Speaker 1: lot of things together, and before I got hurt, he
- 12:41Speaker 1: was my backup, right and then I got in. That
- 12:43Speaker 1: put him an opportunity. You know, you get opportunity, you
- 12:46Speaker 1: don't you don't let it go. And that propelled him
- 12:48Speaker 1: to probably a borderline Hall of Fame career. I think
- 12:51Speaker 1: he's in that conversation, he's had that kind of career. UM.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And had he been in, MU said miracle, who know?
- 12:58Speaker 1: I mean, you see what I'm saying, because that was
- 12:59Speaker 1: supposed to be his moment was miracle and he wasn't
- 13:01Speaker 1: out there and it was my moment um. And so
- 13:04Speaker 1: I thought about this a long time. I never got
- 13:07Speaker 1: the big bag because I had all the injuries toward
- 13:10Speaker 1: my knee, toward my achilles, toward my hand string. UM.
- 13:14Speaker 1: But I also recognize that we talked about it, like
- 13:19Speaker 1: I don't think maybe my ambition and motivations go get
- 13:23Speaker 1: the master degrees or the doctorate. I don't know if
- 13:26Speaker 1: it would have been the same. I don't know, because
- 13:29Speaker 1: because I had, I had a lot lot of life
- 13:32Speaker 1: lessons because of what happened after that, after those moments,
- 13:37Speaker 1: you know, that was my second year in the league. UM,
- 13:40Speaker 1: and that was within three weeks in my second year,
- 13:43Speaker 1: and um after that. The next year, I thought, I'm
- 13:47Speaker 1: on my way of starting to get the ball coming
- 13:49Speaker 1: my way. I tear my knee up. I come back,
- 13:52Speaker 1: have a good year. The very next year, I tear
- 13:55Speaker 1: my hamstring up, sign a free agent one year deal
- 13:57Speaker 1: with Carolina, tear my hamstring up, and then I just
- 14:00Speaker 1: never could never get over that hump to really prove
- 14:03Speaker 1: my worth in the National Football League, even though I
- 14:05Speaker 1: felt like my talent was there, I just couldn't never
- 14:08Speaker 1: get over that healthy hump. And so I thought about
- 14:11Speaker 1: this over long, long haul, what I trade careers with
- 14:14Speaker 1: my boy being Derek Mason, because that's essentially kind of
- 14:17Speaker 1: what happened in those moments. I traded a moment for
- 14:20Speaker 1: hearing for the career, if you will, Because I got hurt.
- 14:22Speaker 1: He ended up stepping into the spot where I felt
- 14:24Speaker 1: like I was going to be. And I don't I
- 14:27Speaker 1: don't know. I don't think so because what I've accomplished
- 14:31Speaker 1: since then, I don't know if I would have. I've
- 14:33Speaker 1: grown so much more as a man in that way.
- 14:36Speaker 1: And I know mace As too, we've talked. But if
- 14:39Speaker 1: I would have, I don't know if I would have
- 14:41Speaker 1: been the same person I am today without these lessons
- 14:43Speaker 1: I've had along the way, right, Yeah, I mean that's
- 14:48Speaker 1: really it again, Yeah yeah, I do, especially um understanding,
- 14:51Speaker 1: like like what you talked about the whole the play
- 14:54Speaker 1: that came up short, that's still in your your death
- 14:56Speaker 1: right now, all the life you learn, you learned way
- 14:59Speaker 1: more from the coming up short, the shortcomings in life
- 15:02Speaker 1: sometimes and even the biggest successes. And but it's learning
- 15:05Speaker 1: moments in both, right. And so in two thousand three,
- 15:09Speaker 1: your last years with the Panthers, you just kind of
- 15:11Speaker 1: reminisced about that for a second. At what point did
- 15:13Speaker 1: you know it was time? Was it because of all
- 15:15Speaker 1: the injuries or was it something else specifically? Well, I
- 15:19Speaker 1: still chased the dream for a couple more years. Um.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I went to uh Washington, UM, and I got there.
- 15:28Speaker 1: At the end, I was having a great camp. I mean,
- 15:30Speaker 1: people was like I was playing with smoke, you know,
- 15:32Speaker 1: sean spring cold. People it was like, man, you still
- 15:35Speaker 1: got some stuff in your tank. And they said, you
- 15:37Speaker 1: just come off the couch. You still got you got
- 15:39Speaker 1: off the couch like this. I was like, man, you know,
- 15:42Speaker 1: and I get into that room with Annie Serato and
- 15:46Speaker 1: Joe Gibbs, and they said, man, you had one of
- 15:48Speaker 1: the best camps of all our receivers. But I like
- 15:51Speaker 1: to keep a lot of age backs. Y'all know the
- 15:53Speaker 1: old Washington Riskins office. Both y'all play d so you
- 15:56Speaker 1: get you know what I'm talking about. They was coming
- 15:57Speaker 1: down here. They have a lot of tighty fullbacks, running backs.
- 16:01Speaker 1: That's when they had Clinton Ports and then they just
- 16:03Speaker 1: signed uh Santana Moss Um, Uh David Patton. They just
- 16:09Speaker 1: drafted um. They signed James Strass the multi year deal.
- 16:12Speaker 1: The special teams grew, they just strafted Um. I was
- 16:16Speaker 1: named from Florida, I forget his name right now, receiver
- 16:19Speaker 1: from Florida. And then they had Sellers, had Ports and
- 16:22Speaker 1: had all these running backs and he said, man, I
- 16:25Speaker 1: just don't know we have a spot for you. I said, coach,
- 16:27Speaker 1: you understand that. You know. It wasn't It wasn't I
- 16:29Speaker 1: was getting because because of my talent. Wasn't there. It
- 16:31Speaker 1: was because it was a numbers game. And then uh,
- 16:35Speaker 1: that's okay. So I kept working out in San Diego.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Charge is called and that was the year Philip Rivers
- 16:41Speaker 1: and then were drafted Um and uh, Philip Rivers came
- 16:47Speaker 1: in and it was Drew Brees and at the end
- 16:49Speaker 1: of that death season, and again it's kind of the
- 16:52Speaker 1: same sentiment. Schottenheimer kind of said the same thing. He
- 16:55Speaker 1: just like, man, it's a numbers game. I got to
- 16:57Speaker 1: the point I was turning thirty years old, Um, I
- 17:00Speaker 1: can keep chasing the dream. I had Canada calling, I
- 17:03Speaker 1: had Arena ball calling, had teams calling and see if
- 17:06Speaker 1: I was still in the shape. I was telling them, yeah,
- 17:08Speaker 1: I'm still working out. It was just like people keep
- 17:10Speaker 1: me on tap, but they weren't pulling the trigger. And
- 17:13Speaker 1: so yes, I said, Man, at some point, I gotta
- 17:15Speaker 1: I gotta move on. I can't be chasing his dream.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I got mouth and fee wife, you know, and I
- 17:20Speaker 1: didn't want to be like be thirty or four years
- 17:23Speaker 1: old still chasing the dream because now I'm getting older, right,
- 17:25Speaker 1: I'm I just turned thirty and and things of that nature. So, um,
- 17:30Speaker 1: I just made a decision, man, right right for our
- 17:32Speaker 1: turn thirty years old. So you know, it's trying to
- 17:35Speaker 1: make a move, do something different. Yeah, you got a
- 17:39Speaker 1: great memory. I just want you to know that the
- 17:42Speaker 1: fact that you rounding off like all these names you
- 17:45Speaker 1: just never forget, I guess, but your memory is impeccable.
- 17:49Speaker 1: It is really something that's gon to be applauded. And
- 17:52Speaker 1: after they hearing all this, we should call you doctor.
- 17:56Speaker 1: So that first year when we are retired, it can
- 17:59Speaker 1: be hard for for some of us. Some of us
- 18:01Speaker 1: kind of figured out, some of us we don't. I
- 18:03Speaker 1: think I was a guy who struggled my first year.
- 18:05Speaker 1: And you've often described the first year in retirement as
- 18:09Speaker 1: losing a loved one or like overcoming an addiction, and
- 18:14Speaker 1: I think I can relate to it. Was it was
- 18:16Speaker 1: kind of like losing a loss of a loved one.
- 18:18Speaker 1: So what was what was that first year like for you? Man?
- 18:22Speaker 1: It's just like you said, you know, there's that that
- 18:26Speaker 1: that moment of depression. I feel like now I could
- 18:30Speaker 1: look back on it, being older and wiser, I think
- 18:34Speaker 1: I dealt with that. There's an emotional peace, there's a denial.
- 18:38Speaker 1: You know. I don't know how many times y'all have
- 18:40Speaker 1: watched games and be like, man, I can still do that,
- 18:42Speaker 1: and watching my backup, watching my backup, go get bags.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I'm watching, you know, just everything going on. There's that, um,
- 18:50Speaker 1: there's anger. I was mad I was mad at the league, man,
- 18:54Speaker 1: I was. I was just like, like, it's you know
- 18:58Speaker 1: that that's a whole another story. But I would just
- 19:00Speaker 1: mad because I didn't get that opportunity to prove my worth.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I felt like in and for different circumstances, especially at
- 19:07Speaker 1: the end, um fear, I don't know what to do next.
- 19:10Speaker 1: The natural fit was do you go into coaching? And
- 19:14Speaker 1: I chased that for a little while, but I don't
- 19:15Speaker 1: know if I was about that life either. Um anxious
- 19:20Speaker 1: you wake up, you know, you're so used to getting
- 19:22Speaker 1: up and going and getting lifting weights, watching film all
- 19:25Speaker 1: through all that, man, all that change your whole demeanor,
- 19:29Speaker 1: change your whole um philosophy, change uh moment, something like
- 19:35Speaker 1: everything just started changing. And um and that, like I said,
- 19:39Speaker 1: I keep talking about it as like it's an addiction,
- 19:42Speaker 1: because there is some forces of addiction or even you know,
- 19:45Speaker 1: losing a loved one too, because it really is. It's
- 19:47Speaker 1: the longest relationship you have. You know, you started playing
- 19:50Speaker 1: started playing football in the seven I retired on starty.
- 19:52Speaker 1: That's twent three years of of a love hate relationship, right,
- 19:56Speaker 1: And so that's why I've equated to that, and especially
- 19:59Speaker 1: with the addiction piece, because man, the dream. You get
- 20:02Speaker 1: addicted to that dream, um, whether whether you get the
- 20:06Speaker 1: multi win all the contract or not, whether you get
- 20:09Speaker 1: the rings or not, I mean not. They're not trying
- 20:11Speaker 1: the same thing about Bred Farv or Tom Brady or
- 20:14Speaker 1: even Jerry Rice, guys who played into their forties. But
- 20:17Speaker 1: I can see why, you know why they stayed as
- 20:19Speaker 1: long as they could, um, just because man, that dream um.
- 20:23Speaker 1: And so it was rough man that first year I
- 20:26Speaker 1: started UM looking to coach. I went a cup. I
- 20:30Speaker 1: found how political that was. One school, my even my
- 20:34Speaker 1: ommala mater, he was like, you know, Kep, I don't know,
- 20:37Speaker 1: guys that the coach at this level had never without
- 20:40Speaker 1: prior coaching experience. And then a couple of years later
- 20:42Speaker 1: he hired Brian Johnson as a quarterback coach, and and
- 20:45Speaker 1: I was like, okay, so I see how this is.
- 20:47Speaker 1: And then I went to another school. I thought yeah,
- 20:50Speaker 1: And when that school, I thought he was gonna hire me.
- 20:52Speaker 1: And then then all of a sudden, two schools did
- 20:54Speaker 1: this to me. Actually, and then all of sudden their
- 20:57Speaker 1: phones went quiet. And then I looked on the internet
- 21:00Speaker 1: and I see they hired two different people, two different
- 21:03Speaker 1: people expectively and I'm just like, man, is that really
- 21:05Speaker 1: what it is? So I settled in on secondary education, man,
- 21:09Speaker 1: and I enjoyed coaching kids that for the time I
- 21:12Speaker 1: did it, Man, I really did to be able to
- 21:14Speaker 1: share what I had in me with some other kids. Um.
- 21:18Speaker 1: And then to be told, I learned a lot of
- 21:20Speaker 1: more about football, UM that I didn't know. You know,
- 21:24Speaker 1: if we're so focused in on what we're doing and
- 21:27Speaker 1: what the dB is doing, maybe the linebackers to a
- 21:29Speaker 1: certain degree. But when I became a coach, especially I
- 21:31Speaker 1: became a head coach, I didn't know what the old
- 21:33Speaker 1: line was doing. I know that the line was doing.
- 21:35Speaker 1: I know why coverage just did this. I knew why
- 21:38Speaker 1: blitzes did that. I had to learn so much more
- 21:40Speaker 1: about the game. So that would help me grow another
- 21:43Speaker 1: appreciation for the game that gave me so much and
- 21:46Speaker 1: took so much from me as well. But I grew
- 21:48Speaker 1: another appreciation for it. And then that then I was
- 21:50Speaker 1: over after a while because I started that into two kids. Um,
- 21:55Speaker 1: you kind of went into all the things that you
- 21:57Speaker 1: dabbled into or got into while you were you know,
- 21:59Speaker 1: after of retirement, and I know a lot of emotions
- 22:02Speaker 1: probably fueled you and pushed you in these different directions,
- 22:05Speaker 1: whether it was anger or anxiousness, uh, fear, whatever that was.
- 22:09Speaker 1: But is it safe to say that the love for kids?
- 22:14Speaker 1: What kind of pushed you and kept you in this
- 22:16Speaker 1: space of education? Like what pushed you there? Or was
- 22:20Speaker 1: it a person? What exactly got you there and made
- 22:22Speaker 1: you stay? Man, that's a great question. I don't think
- 22:25Speaker 1: nobody's ever asked me that. Um, yeah, I think it
- 22:28Speaker 1: was I saw I had something that I can get
- 22:31Speaker 1: back to kids, and they were gravitating to it, and
- 22:36Speaker 1: I knew it was because of my past. I knew
- 22:38Speaker 1: part of it was I had that that instant, that
- 22:43Speaker 1: instant credibility to the kids because a lot of and
- 22:48Speaker 1: at that time, the kids grew up watching me play.
- 22:50Speaker 1: You know, one of the kids I coach was telling
- 22:52Speaker 1: me about when he was four or five years old
- 22:55Speaker 1: and he was at the Musicity Miracle with his parents,
- 22:57Speaker 1: and yet now I'm coaching him, you know what I'm saying,
- 22:59Speaker 1: So he quote unquote one of their heroes, if you will,
- 23:02Speaker 1: and I'm coaching them. And so yeah, that's essentially what
- 23:07Speaker 1: got me and kept me where I was. And then
- 23:10Speaker 1: the whole school thing was just UH me trying to
- 23:14Speaker 1: better myself. UM. I would say, well, if I'm gonna
- 23:17Speaker 1: be in this secondary educational world, I knew doors would
- 23:21Speaker 1: open for me because of my past. So I my
- 23:23Speaker 1: The term I've used is UM, I wanted to be qualified.
- 23:27Speaker 1: So I was justified, and so I wanted to go
- 23:29Speaker 1: learn much as I could about this education world about teaching.
- 23:34Speaker 1: UM and the second masters that I know that it
- 23:37Speaker 1: sounds impressive, but it was kind of an accident of
- 23:40Speaker 1: her had it happened stance. I was doing private school
- 23:43Speaker 1: thing first, and then UM I had I went to
- 23:47Speaker 1: public school and I didn't have a teaching license, so
- 23:48Speaker 1: I had to go back to school to get my
- 23:50Speaker 1: masters degrees. I get my teaching likes so and that's
- 23:51Speaker 1: how I know with two masters degrees. But the uh
- 23:54Speaker 1: and the doctor would talk about later. But UM to
- 23:57Speaker 1: enter your question wrong, Yeah, man, the kids ultimately seeing
- 24:01Speaker 1: that I had an IMPACTUM kept me there and UM.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Then when I transitioned, it was kind of the same thing.
- 24:07Speaker 1: It was I grew as a leader as an individual leader,
- 24:10Speaker 1: and I would only have impact on kids. I saw
- 24:13Speaker 1: have an impact on adults, and that was was real
- 24:17Speaker 1: cool for me. So I was like, man, I kind
- 24:19Speaker 1: of like this. So that's why I moved into the administrative,
- 24:21Speaker 1: administrative part of it. Don't you apologize anymore forgetting all
- 24:26Speaker 1: these educations and degrees. All right, it's just it's okay,
- 24:31Speaker 1: it's okay. Don't downplay it. Let us boost you up.
- 24:34Speaker 1: That's why I got out here. Yeah. Hey, I never
- 24:37Speaker 1: thought myself be smart, man, and I and I you know,
- 24:40Speaker 1: I'm just one thing I do know is how to
- 24:42Speaker 1: work work hard and getting them degrees. Man, it was funny.
- 24:47Speaker 1: And I've said this and what people think, well, I've
- 24:49Speaker 1: said it's one of my great accomplishments. Is everything I
- 24:53Speaker 1: poured into athletics, I finally poured into my academics. And
- 24:56Speaker 1: it's all one and the same, you know. It's just
- 24:59Speaker 1: I knew motivation, knew work ethic, a new determination, all
- 25:04Speaker 1: that stuff I did to get myself ready to play football.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I just did that same thing for school and it
- 25:10Speaker 1: worked out, you know. And that's what I tell people.
- 25:12Speaker 1: It's like, you must be smart, said now, I just
- 25:14Speaker 1: know how to work hard and and and that was
- 25:16Speaker 1: something that had to work harder at because it didn't
- 25:18Speaker 1: come as natural to come natural and right, lifting weights, running,
- 25:22Speaker 1: running routes, all that stuff you have to do to
- 25:25Speaker 1: be put yourself in the utimo shape to be a
- 25:27Speaker 1: football player. Um, I just did it from an academic standpoint.
- 25:32Speaker 1: I mean you you said you called it your getting
- 25:35Speaker 1: your doctorate, like your mouth everest. I don't know any
- 25:38Speaker 1: other former players that have got that have received a
- 25:41Speaker 1: doctor And what would often often think about this? So
- 25:47Speaker 1: one of my one of my philosophies is when you lose,
- 25:49Speaker 1: don't lose the lesson. And as I get older, we
- 25:51Speaker 1: hit wiser and we grow up and learned. And you
- 25:53Speaker 1: said that, you know, looking back, I could say this
- 25:55Speaker 1: and I felt that. So what would uh thirty year
- 26:00Speaker 1: old NFL first round pick say to a principle with
- 26:07Speaker 1: the doctorate? What would that Kevin Dyson say to Dr Dyson? Wow?
- 26:14Speaker 1: Man YouTube coming up with some great questions. I appreciate this, Um,
- 26:22Speaker 1: we really got a good we got a good team.
- 26:24Speaker 1: We do have a good team. Yeah yeah, yeah, no, No,
- 26:29Speaker 1: I appreciate that. No, that that's really tough. That's good
- 26:32Speaker 1: because you know, I'm writing a book and it makes
- 26:33Speaker 1: me evaluate kind of where I'm going with that. But
- 26:36Speaker 1: you know, two totally different worlds, you know, when you're
- 26:41Speaker 1: right the the thirty year old kid who that dream
- 26:46Speaker 1: was just right there, right you just you're drafted, you're planning,
- 26:48Speaker 1: and fell played in a couple of Super Bowls and
- 26:51Speaker 1: that's your world, and you're like, that's that's all you know.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Um Like, like I told people my first master's class.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I get in there and the professor says, hey, we're
- 27:01Speaker 1: talking about what's on the syllable. You gotta do a
- 27:03Speaker 1: word excel, you gotta do a power point. And at
- 27:06Speaker 1: that point, no, I did what none of that was
- 27:07Speaker 1: because remember, like Microsoft word wasn't happening when I was
- 27:10Speaker 1: in college, right, that's old I am. And so I
- 27:14Speaker 1: didn't know the world. All I knew was football. I
- 27:17Speaker 1: knew the world from like traveling and all these things
- 27:20Speaker 1: that afforded us because we have money to do those
- 27:22Speaker 1: sorts of things. But I really didn't know the world.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I didn't know books, I didn't know academia. I didn't
- 27:28Speaker 1: know that side of it. So what I would my
- 27:31Speaker 1: thirty year old or younger self would ask myself now
- 27:33Speaker 1: forty seven is like, what would you do differently? As
- 27:39Speaker 1: far as that I would have taken the time to
- 27:40Speaker 1: really enjoy my life and not taking football so seriously.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I think I took football so serious and put so
- 27:45Speaker 1: much pressure on that because I was chasing that bag.
- 27:50Speaker 1: I was chasing the dream, one of the ring. I
- 27:52Speaker 1: wanted to be known. I wanted to notoriety that all
- 27:56Speaker 1: the stuff that comes with playing ball. And I think
- 27:59Speaker 1: about how so shortsighted compared to the extent of life.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Like for most of us we end in our thirties
- 28:07Speaker 1: and offordy seven. So I was gonna be a young
- 28:10Speaker 1: man if I got to play ten fifteen years anyway.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Uh So it was gonna be the same sort of thing.
- 28:15Speaker 1: What what next? How am I going to grow as
- 28:18Speaker 1: an individual? And this is what I would now on
- 28:21Speaker 1: this side of it from my older self to doctor
- 28:23Speaker 1: Kevin Dice aside telling my younger self, man, it's like
- 28:26Speaker 1: you'd like to believe you have a long life to live, man,
- 28:28Speaker 1: and so do everything you think you ever wanted to do.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Grow as you can grow as individual, even do stuff
- 28:34Speaker 1: you didn't think you want to do, or you think
- 28:36Speaker 1: I didn't think you can accomplish. I never thought i'd
- 28:38Speaker 1: go get my doctor. That didn't seem ever in the
- 28:41Speaker 1: possibility of what I could do and to do to
- 28:44Speaker 1: be of one percent on being a first round draft pick,
- 28:47Speaker 1: in one percent of being called doctor and in in education. Man,
- 28:52Speaker 1: you would if you had told me that was gonna
- 28:53Speaker 1: be my path, I would have told you, man, you crazy. Yeah.
- 28:55Speaker 1: I just thought, yeah, I thought I played football, go
- 28:59Speaker 1: coach for a few years years and then on a
- 29:02Speaker 1: couple of businesses and chill, like you know what I mean,
- 29:05Speaker 1: Like I didn't. I didn't have this. It was not
- 29:07Speaker 1: in my plan book, on my playbook. It was just happened.
- 29:11Speaker 1: And I'm happy it did because it's taught me a
- 29:13Speaker 1: lot about myself and made me evaluate myself a lot.
- 29:17Speaker 1: And I and I even like y'all know, if you play,
- 29:20Speaker 1: you as a professional athlete, we evaluate ourselves every day.
- 29:25Speaker 1: But outside of that, people don't do that. And we
- 29:28Speaker 1: do it as pro athletes because if we don't do
- 29:30Speaker 1: what the coaches are, your teammates are, the fan is,
- 29:33Speaker 1: the administration is. We're being evaluated every time, every time
- 29:36Speaker 1: they put that film on you being evaluated. So if
- 29:38Speaker 1: you don't evaluate yourself and try to get better, then
- 29:41Speaker 1: it doesn't then you're not gonna last long. Well, if
- 29:44Speaker 1: you don't do that. On this side of the equation,
- 29:47Speaker 1: You're never gonna figure out what drives you that, what
- 29:51Speaker 1: gives you purpose again, what fuels you? What? What helps
- 29:55Speaker 1: you make money? Um to support your family, because you
- 30:00Speaker 1: know the average life expectancy of football players, but fifty
- 30:03Speaker 1: six fifty seven something to that effect. So that's not
- 30:06Speaker 1: a long time. So hopefully it's arresting peace. Franco Harris,
- 30:11Speaker 1: he died of seventy too. Hopefully we can live a
- 30:13Speaker 1: lot longer than that. But life is not promised. So
- 30:16Speaker 1: what are you gonna do today to make itself better
- 30:18Speaker 1: for tomorrow? And that's kind of how I started thinking.
- 30:22Speaker 1: I started getting more and more to the educational piece.
- 30:24Speaker 1: You hadn't even said it. Yeah, I was first round
- 30:26Speaker 1: draft pick, sixteenth overall, but I was also trantied in
- 30:28Speaker 1: front of one of the best receivers ever to do it,
- 30:30Speaker 1: Randy Moss. I was the first receiver taking right. People
- 30:34Speaker 1: didn't know I was battling with that my whole career,
- 30:36Speaker 1: Like I was dealing with that from a psychological standpoint
- 30:39Speaker 1: and social emotional standpoint all my career, thinking like like
- 30:43Speaker 1: belittle with myself, like do I deserve this? Like here
- 30:46Speaker 1: he is doing this, and I'm sitting here like watching
- 30:49Speaker 1: him go ahead and catch ten fifteen balls a game,
- 30:52Speaker 1: and I'm I'm getting scraps and you know what I mean.
- 30:55Speaker 1: And I'm I'm measuring myself up to that, and and
- 30:58Speaker 1: I'm assuming everybody else to do on the same, you know.
- 31:01Speaker 1: And so I'm walking into meeting rooms or two facilities,
- 31:05Speaker 1: and I'm thinking, like, man, everybody wishes I was Moss.
- 31:07Speaker 1: And I don't think that's true or not. It could be,
- 31:09Speaker 1: but that's how I was walking in every day, anxious
- 31:12Speaker 1: and then and feeling that. And I know those other
- 31:14Speaker 1: young men that kind of have that same sentiment. There's
- 31:16Speaker 1: a lot of pressure we put on ourselves. So my
- 31:19Speaker 1: older self, my forty seven year old stelf we're told
- 31:22Speaker 1: told my little twenty something year old kids. So man,
- 31:25Speaker 1: just be you, go out there and be the best
- 31:27Speaker 1: version of you, and if that's not good enough, someone
- 31:30Speaker 1: else will like it, you know. But I didn't real
- 31:32Speaker 1: give it like that. Harrison is the Devil's joy, you
- 31:36Speaker 1: know what though, Like listen listening to you, uh k
- 31:41Speaker 1: Dr Dyson, it's just it's really intriguing into the mindset
- 31:46Speaker 1: of where so many of our athletes are in former
- 31:49Speaker 1: NFL players, minds are at and you know, one statement
- 31:52Speaker 1: that you said in other interviews and other sit downs
- 31:55Speaker 1: is that and it comes to you like wanting to
- 31:57Speaker 1: be an educator. Was that you know, you wanted to
- 31:59Speaker 1: be qualified so you would be justified. But is that
- 32:03Speaker 1: really almost like the synopsis of your whole life and career,
- 32:07Speaker 1: the fact that you got drafted in front of Ready Moss.
- 32:10Speaker 1: You never felt qualified for that. After you saw what
- 32:12Speaker 1: Randy Moss is doing. You come up one yard short
- 32:16Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl play where everybody remembers from Mike
- 32:19Speaker 1: Jones talk with you, so you never felt qualified from there.
- 32:22Speaker 1: You see Derek Mason come in your back up, start balling,
- 32:26Speaker 1: go get the bag. You can't get over injuries. You
- 32:29Speaker 1: never qualified for those things too. So you literally your
- 32:33Speaker 1: whole life you're chasing these things and you never feels
- 32:36Speaker 1: as accomplished as you were as an athlete. You never
- 32:39Speaker 1: felt qualified for anything. And so now you go and
- 32:42Speaker 1: get these degrees to make or give yourself the sense
- 32:46Speaker 1: of like, Okay, I belong and so has that really
- 32:51Speaker 1: done that for you? Has that really done that for you?
- 32:54Speaker 1: I think that's what we need to get across to
- 32:56Speaker 1: all of our listeners and people watching, is that like
- 33:00Speaker 1: so many of us never feel qualified, force accomplished as
- 33:03Speaker 1: we are. We never feel where we truly are justified, like, man,
- 33:07Speaker 1: we did it right because we didn't reach that moment.
- 33:10Speaker 1: We didn't get that goal whatever that is. And so
- 33:13Speaker 1: has been this educator like have you reached that goal?
- 33:17Speaker 1: And maybe if you have or have not, what was
- 33:21Speaker 1: so fulfilling about it? Or have you got to this
- 33:23Speaker 1: place of fulfillment yet? Man? Ro Man, look at y'all. Man,
- 33:28Speaker 1: that's hey, that's Deacon right there. That's why I was like,
- 33:31Speaker 1: all I needed was an organ right there. When you
- 33:35Speaker 1: hear me go definitely be right here. I love it.
- 33:41Speaker 1: This is definitely be on sport. And this is rabb
- 33:43Speaker 1: my alley right here. So I appreciate this. You don't
- 33:45Speaker 1: even know. Listen, you hit it right on the head man.
- 33:49Speaker 1: As as I've grown and done that self evaluation and
- 33:53Speaker 1: trying to learn what's what and be who I am
- 33:57Speaker 1: exactly it man, This is I think why I'm so
- 34:00Speaker 1: driven to be successful at this part of it is.
- 34:02Speaker 1: It is my own thing. It's something different than what
- 34:05Speaker 1: anybody ever expected from me, you know, even as a kid,
- 34:08Speaker 1: being the best player on the team or whatever it was.
- 34:12Speaker 1: And never feel like I ever fulfilled those expectations in
- 34:15Speaker 1: a lot of respects. Um, this was my thing. Um,
- 34:19Speaker 1: and you're on the whole same man, you were. You
- 34:23Speaker 1: talking about book right now and I gotta finish it.
- 34:25Speaker 1: But this, this is, this is what it is man,
- 34:27Speaker 1: being qualified. So I was justified. And um, you know,
- 34:32Speaker 1: like you talked about, I've had so many of those.
- 34:34Speaker 1: I was right there and I never got over the hump.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I never was And you know I had, I had
- 34:40Speaker 1: a moment or two, you know, the Super Bowl, let
- 34:41Speaker 1: me see Americo and all that kind of stuff. So
- 34:43Speaker 1: you know I've I always said, humbly, they to be
- 34:45Speaker 1: still be relevant twentysoo years later. Um, that's something I
- 34:50Speaker 1: don't take for granted, because there's a lot of cats
- 34:52Speaker 1: that y'all know that played with us, played after us,
- 34:55Speaker 1: and played before us, that people don't talk about, don't
- 34:57Speaker 1: know about name hip. All these Hall of famers get
- 35:00Speaker 1: those rings and get into all of fame, but nobody
- 35:03Speaker 1: knows about them. So for me to actually have something
- 35:06Speaker 1: people still talk about, still want to talk about, you know,
- 35:09Speaker 1: it's humbling and I appreciate that, But the end result
- 35:12Speaker 1: of it is, I think as a man, I had
- 35:17Speaker 1: to have something that I can identify for me that
- 35:19Speaker 1: was mine, that was my home. That I wasn't chasing
- 35:22Speaker 1: somebody else's dream. Wasn't chasing a ghost. I wasn't chasing
- 35:26Speaker 1: the the success of Randy Moss. I wasn't chasing the
- 35:30Speaker 1: success of my running mate Derek Mason. I wasn't chasing
- 35:34Speaker 1: everybody's expectations of me, you know. And I'm to be
- 35:38Speaker 1: talked wrong. I'm just now getting there. And now I'm
- 35:41Speaker 1: just now realizing that as I'm doing all this writing
- 35:44Speaker 1: and things that that nature and talk about, I'm just
- 35:46Speaker 1: not understanding. And the last year or two, so this
- 35:48Speaker 1: is I've been retired since I was thirty. We're talking
- 35:51Speaker 1: fifteen years just right. And and as I think now
- 35:56Speaker 1: you're starting to hear more about the mental health, peace
- 35:58Speaker 1: and and all the stuff. They're some of our teammates
- 36:00Speaker 1: are former players and stuff are going through the CTE depression,
- 36:05Speaker 1: suicide and all that kind of stuff just makes you
- 36:07Speaker 1: pause for a second, like am I okay? You know?
- 36:10Speaker 1: And and and you're like, okay, so what am I
- 36:13Speaker 1: hanging on too? You know. And I still don't gonna
- 36:15Speaker 1: be wrong. I still got my faults, man, I still
- 36:17Speaker 1: have my struggles. My wifeould tell you that for sure,
- 36:20Speaker 1: but um it, but it's a it's an ongoing process.
- 36:24Speaker 1: And when I think it started with knowledge itself. And
- 36:26Speaker 1: I'm trying to get to learn myself because you're talking
- 36:29Speaker 1: about forty some years of habit or history that I'm
- 36:33Speaker 1: trying to unfold, unpack and figure out. But you said
- 36:38Speaker 1: it in probably better terms out loud that I don't
- 36:40Speaker 1: know if I've ever shared with anybody, but to be told, yeah, man,
- 36:43Speaker 1: I feel like I've been chasing ghosts my whole life.
- 36:47Speaker 1: And and it's and it's only self inflicted. It's only
- 36:49Speaker 1: because of me. I don't Randy. Randy wasn't worried about me.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Mace wasn't worried about me. You know. Shoot, they were
- 36:56Speaker 1: doing the same thing. They're trying to make the most
- 36:59Speaker 1: of their careers, do what they could be their ability,
- 37:01Speaker 1: same thing. They weren't thinking about me. And here I
- 37:04Speaker 1: didn't worry about Dan. How I measure up? You know? So?
- 37:07Speaker 1: But yeah, man, that's deep. Man. He got me on
- 37:09Speaker 1: the therapy coution. Now I appreciate you. Yeah, he he,
- 37:14Speaker 1: he is old and wise. You said you forty seven.
- 37:16Speaker 1: I think Rome fifty one. Yeah, I think Rome fifty
- 37:20Speaker 1: one with them suit TV war hearing the other night,
- 37:25Speaker 1: boy he was clean with the with the turtle neck,
- 37:28Speaker 1: looking like a black Bruce Wayne I saw the other
- 37:32Speaker 1: night about Yeah, Tennessee Alabama pimps over there. All right, Look,
- 37:40Speaker 1: we're gonna take We're gonna take a quick break. We're
- 37:42Speaker 1: gonna pay some bills, and when we come back, we're
- 37:45Speaker 1: gonna have a couple of questions that, uh, hopefully you
- 37:48Speaker 1: can answer. You got the doctor and everything, Dr Dison.
- 37:51Speaker 1: So when I asked you a couple of questions that
- 37:53Speaker 1: a fifth grader should know, soun in. We'll be, we'll be,
- 37:57Speaker 1: We'll be right back. You're the educator, So Joe College,
- 38:00Speaker 1: this Jesus for you. Now that we'll do, we'll do,
- 38:10Speaker 1: we'll be right back. All right. So now we're here
- 38:13Speaker 1: with Dr Kevin Dyson, wide receiver number one in the
- 38:19Speaker 1: two thousand what draft, two thousand three draft. Right, I'm
- 38:27Speaker 1: just trying to I'm just trying to, yeah, trying to
- 38:29Speaker 1: put all these things together. Anyways, No, that's not important
- 38:33Speaker 1: now now we get to call him doctor. We are
- 38:37Speaker 1: going to make him, We're going to challenge him today
- 38:41Speaker 1: that we're gonna make you a little bit more nerve
- 38:44Speaker 1: racking here, right, So we're gonna kind of put it
- 38:47Speaker 1: all out there. And so defending your doctorate dissertation or
- 38:53Speaker 1: jumping out of an airplane with the Army Golden Knights,
- 38:57Speaker 1: oh oh wow. Um. I've done both, and I tell
- 39:03Speaker 1: you what they both were like bucket list. I never
- 39:08Speaker 1: thought I'd do it. Which one was more nerve racking?
- 39:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna go and jumping out the airplane? Good. I
- 39:18Speaker 1: don't blame you. That's the reason being is as as
- 39:23Speaker 1: because I was nervous wrecked when I was defending my
- 39:25Speaker 1: my dissertation. But my advisor, she stopped. She stopped me.
- 39:28Speaker 1: She said, Kevin, you know your research. Relaxed. This this
- 39:33Speaker 1: is this is not even like this is not playing
- 39:35Speaker 1: in the super Bowl, just you know it and talking.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Once you did that, I settled down and I was
- 39:40Speaker 1: able to defend my my research. But that jumping out
- 39:43Speaker 1: the plane, I had no control. So did you jump
- 39:47Speaker 1: out of and C one thirty? I don't remember what
- 39:49Speaker 1: the plane it was? Man. They probably told me. I
- 39:51Speaker 1: won't pay attention. My mind was like, man, I just
- 39:53Speaker 1: want to get to the ground. But I tell you what,
- 39:55Speaker 1: it's the most liberating experience I've ever had in my life.
- 39:59Speaker 1: And I was done. I want to go right back
- 40:01Speaker 1: up and I will go put you want to get
- 40:03Speaker 1: on that second question? Yeah? Yeah, so my question go ahead?
- 40:08Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, So my question to you, now, these
- 40:10Speaker 1: fifth grade of questions. You should know these. You have
- 40:12Speaker 1: a doctorate, So no offense if you don't know. Storing
- 40:15Speaker 1: it out there doctor Dr Dyson Um who was the
- 40:18Speaker 1: sixteenth president? No presure, not states, no pressure. Who I'm
- 40:25Speaker 1: gonna go with Wilson Woodrow Wilson, I would have to
- 40:29Speaker 1: say that is incorrect, sir. It is Abraham Lincoln. Yeah,
- 40:34Speaker 1: all right, it's okay. Yeah, it wasn't. We weren't even
- 40:40Speaker 1: trying to trick you on that one. What is the
- 40:42Speaker 1: largest and deepest ocean in the world? Largest and deepest? Yes,
- 40:48Speaker 1: the Atlantic, both of them? Atlantic? Is that true? I
- 40:54Speaker 1: don't know. I wouldn't went with Pacific. Do we know
- 40:56Speaker 1: the answer? Peanut? Why you put it on me? I thought,
- 40:59Speaker 1: that's answer. You're supposed to know that. You're supposed to
- 41:06Speaker 1: know the answer. To your questions, does your Pacific? Yes,
- 41:10Speaker 1: it is the Pacific. I know. Oh my god, you're
- 41:12Speaker 1: not terrible. Need I need a new co host? You
- 41:15Speaker 1: don't even know the answer to these questions? Well I
- 41:16Speaker 1: thought it was specific, but then he said Atlantic, and
- 41:19Speaker 1: I was like, I mean he does have a doctor.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Smart right now? I thought I didn't. Sometimes I don't
- 41:24Speaker 1: trust my lower level. I apologize. I don't tell my god.
- 41:29Speaker 1: All right, So the Statue of Liberty was a gift
- 41:32Speaker 1: from one country. Oh, I know this is too. Yes,
- 41:37Speaker 1: you got our oldest and longest uh ally world ally
- 41:44Speaker 1: from from the Europeans. Great job. All right. Who is
- 41:47Speaker 1: the author of the book To Kill a Mockingbird? Oh? Man, yeah,
- 41:57Speaker 1: that one. Give it to him. What you gotta he
- 42:01Speaker 1: buying that? Yeah? I don't know it and in his
- 42:07Speaker 1: mind he hey, here's the reason why. So you know
- 42:13Speaker 1: in that book they say some choice words and they
- 42:16Speaker 1: do you know you had to deal with that in school.
- 42:19Speaker 1: I had to deal with it, and I'm kind of
- 42:22Speaker 1: I got all the characters names mentioned, I cannot remember
- 42:25Speaker 1: the author's name right now. Finch, I know Mr Finch
- 42:28Speaker 1: was one of the guys. Boom um, yeah, I forgot
- 42:34Speaker 1: you got me. See, maybe we should skip it and
- 42:38Speaker 1: then we'll come back to it. All right, we got
- 42:39Speaker 1: one more question, if you know you want to get
- 42:41Speaker 1: on the last question. Yeah, so the Siens question, which
- 42:45Speaker 1: planning in our solar system is known for its beautiful rings? Saturn?
- 42:51Speaker 1: Bo All right, who is the author to kill a
- 42:53Speaker 1: mocking Bird? Go? Oh man, I'm thinking all the character
- 42:58Speaker 1: I can't remember, you know, what's me messed up? I'm
- 43:00Speaker 1: gonna get off. You're not gonna google it. I'm gonna
- 43:02Speaker 1: walk out and like there it is. Watch you're gonna
- 43:08Speaker 1: tell them wrong? The Harper League, Harper League. Yeah, properly. God,
- 43:17Speaker 1: dang it, Harperly, that's what it is. I knew that's
- 43:19Speaker 1: what it is. That's my that's my did That's what
- 43:24Speaker 1: I was gonna say something, right, I dang it right,
- 43:26Speaker 1: I was gonna say that's it right there. You know
- 43:31Speaker 1: they thank they got that book band now from education
- 43:33Speaker 1: because of the words and the choice words. Yeah, deal
- 43:37Speaker 1: with it too. Yeah, Dr Dyson, Man, I can't we
- 43:42Speaker 1: can't thank you enough for just sharing your your story
- 43:44Speaker 1: with us about the league, education, the first year of retirement. Um,
- 43:51Speaker 1: just hey man, you you you blessed us today, and
- 43:54Speaker 1: I just want to say thank very much. I appreciate it. Um.
- 43:58Speaker 1: I love what you've done post football. You know, people
- 44:01Speaker 1: see you as a person not just a football player,
- 44:05Speaker 1: but you your principle of a high school man. That's
- 44:08Speaker 1: that's big, that's that's powerful. I love that you reclaim
- 44:11Speaker 1: your worth and just everything you're doing, and I'm wishing
- 44:14Speaker 1: you nothing but growth success on this upcoming book that
- 44:18Speaker 1: you have. Hey, Kevin Man, I would like to say
