- 0:21You never know what's going to happen.
- 0:23Maybe I'll try to sing again. Maybe.
- 0:25Hopefully not. See you tomorrow night, 5:30 PM
- 0:28Denver time on YouTube. The link is down in the show
- 0:31notes. He looks like he was doing this.
- 0:36And Vince, he's, I think he's nervous a little bit here, but
- 0:39that's OK. This is just kind of what I do.
- 0:40I put people in the spot. We were gonna call the podcast,
- 0:42the On the Spot podcast once. Go ahead and scoot up for me.
- 0:45And we're gonna put him on the spot here.
- 0:47So why don't you introduce yourself here to our audience
- 0:49today? I'm Jim Turchin, originally from
- 0:52Indiana, and now I live. Yeah, in champagne that Gil for
- 0:57about 14 years 14 is that right? Just.
- 1:00About Yeah. So I'm pushing on toward the
- 1:0317th. So you weren't that far behind
- 1:05me, correct. I feel like I'm the old man, so
- 1:08always feel like I'm 20 years longer than anybody, even though
- 1:10only been or 17 and tell us what you do at Gill Athletics.
- 1:13Yeah, I'm an Rd. I dabble in a little bit of
- 1:16track and field stuff. I've got the track background,
- 1:19so I enjoy what I can. I also work in our basketball
- 1:23product range, work on our basketball portables, basketball
- 1:26rims backwards and whatnot. So and tell us a little bit
- 1:29about that track background that you have.
- 1:31Yeah, I ran, my dad, got me inspired, got me into the sport
- 1:35here in for I U back in the day. I don't think I knew that that
- 1:38was. My high school coach, and he ran
- 1:40for Indiana. Ran for Indiana in the 70s and
- 1:43so you ran track at. Batesville High School and then
- 1:47went to Valparaisville. The Crusaders?
- 1:49Yes, I try to know every. But I should correct you.
- 1:52It's no longer The Crusaders it was when I was there.
- 1:55What is it? Or now?
- 1:55The beacons, so the. Beacons like like a lighthouse.
- 2:00And changing the mascot to a lighthouse.
- 2:04You should know this. I don't know about that one.
- 2:07I understand why the Crusader. I get that.
- 2:09But there's had to be other options besides beacons.
- 2:12They're probably wearing they got you could be the school with
- 2:16no mascot Illinois. We don't know what we are.
- 2:19So one of the reasons I wanted to have you on the podcast here
- 2:22on the live recording here at the USTF CCCA convention here in
- 2:26Denver, Co First of all, I'm super glad you don't normally
- 2:28travel with us and so I'm super happy that you're here.
- 2:31One is I want to put you on the spot.
- 2:32You know, I like to highlight our team, especially the ones
- 2:35that have track background. So one day I want you to be on
- 2:37the full podcast. You are absolutely able to say
- 2:39no, you have to commit now. But but I wanted to get on paper
- 2:41just in case you said yes, I can come back and say no, no bro,
- 2:43you said yes. But thank you.
- 2:45One of the real reasons we are unveiling our Continuum C5
- 2:50hurdle at this show and this is pretty revolutionary and you
- 2:55were it takes a whole team. I know you're going to say you
- 2:58were the leader of this. So this new hurdle, you can
- 3:00check it out on our catalog or online.
- 3:01There's some videos on social media.
- 3:04If you think about when you go to move a hurdle up or down, the
- 3:07first thing that everybody does or at least they should do is
- 3:09they put their foot on that cross brace right.
- 3:11Kind of to stabilize that hurdle down and then they click it up
- 3:14303336 or what not. Or if you have our C4, the ones
- 3:18we use at NC Double A's trigger and you move up right.
- 3:21Well our boss David Hodge must think I keep telling about you
- 3:25must think I'm the greatest salesman in the world.
- 3:27I'm pretty pricey hurdle but the real challenge was we actually
- 3:30had to develop this thing and and my friend here Jim Turchin
- 3:33you were the lead design on this.
- 3:35Can you talk a little bit about that process cuz you were
- 3:38creating something from scratch. There was no blueprint here.
- 3:43I'll say that kind of was cuz the C4 is a tried and true
- 3:46hurdle. It's been out there for years.
- 3:48I helped on the development of that as well, just behind the
- 3:52scenes, but we wanted to keep as much of that the same as we
- 3:56could, just that's. It's such a durable, durable
- 3:59hurdle. Save that 10 times.
- 4:02Then we wanted to keep as much the same as we could.
- 4:04But yeah, we wanted to incorporate this new feature so
- 4:08we actually look to the luggage industry.
- 4:12The telescoping handles on those luggage gets tossed and thrown
- 4:15around all day. Every day.
- 4:17Takes some. Beating so, So we took the we,
- 4:21we bought luggage, we looked at those mechanisms and everybody
- 4:26uses the same thing. So we just essentially looked at
- 4:30that, we adapted it to fit inside of our hurdle uprights
- 4:34and we are hoping to, yeah, have the same durability out of the
- 4:38mechanism for it was really fascinating.
- 4:41I got to be along that journey on the sales side, which means I
- 4:44just got to muck stuff up, you know, whenever the sales guys
- 4:46walk in, the engineers like, oh crap, what are we doing now?
- 4:49But it was really interesting to see buying the luggage, tearing
- 4:52it apart, learning, OK, is what this happened.
- 4:55OK, but now we need to do it 180 degrees.
- 4:58We got to do this thing upside down.
- 4:59Oh, and by the way, we're going to have people like Trey
- 5:02Cunningham and Oh my gosh. David, Oliver, David, Oliver.
- 5:07David, I'm sorry man. I love you man.
- 5:09I'm so sorry. The DO test right that people
- 5:11are going to be hitting and knocking the every little.
- 5:13So it's got to be durable. So it's really interesting to
- 5:15see that flip inside of the R&D mechanism.
- 5:19And then also the testing that we do now, I got to ask is the
- 5:23R&D guy is testing the most fun thing that you guys do it from
- 5:26the outside. It seems like it when you get to
- 5:27kind of just try to break stuff. Testing is fun.
- 5:32We do and don't want to break stuff early on.
- 5:34You want to break stuff so you can learn, then late on when you
- 5:37think you've figured everything out.
- 5:38Sure, it's also nerve wracking. Cuz you don't.
- 5:41I never thought about it like, that's like, OK, no, we fixed it
- 5:43now. Yeah.
- 5:43No, we didn't. That's the son of.
- 5:44OK, right. That's.
- 5:45My favorite part is the. Even before that, just the
- 5:47design. Yeah, yeah, that's cool.
- 5:50And what was your. So you know, there's people out
- 5:51there right now going to wait a minute working in the track
- 5:54side. I don't know if I would be a
- 5:54salesperson, but you know, I like to create stuff and ideas.
- 5:59What was your major in college that led you into this kind of
- 6:01career? As a mechanical engineer?
- 6:05Yeah, out of the gates. I worked for a hospital.
- 6:07Been manufacturing my hometown. Yeah, shout out to Hill Room.
- 6:12No one knows. No for sure.
- 6:14Well, someone right now has an aunt that works for home rooms
- 6:16like Oh my God, he. Said Well if you're on a
- 6:18hospital bed there's sure sure more than 50% chance in the US
- 6:21that you're on him. Wow.
- 6:23Right. Did you ever think you'd be
- 6:24working inside of track designing stuff like this?
- 6:26And in basketball I mean that not even your.
- 6:28I assume you didn't play basketball I.
- 6:30Everyone from Indiana plays basketball.
- 6:32Well, that's a. Good point.
- 6:33I played through middle school. OK, then I should switch over to
- 6:35running. I love it, man.
- 6:37Well, we're going to get Jim on the podcast maybe in 2023 and
- 6:42learn the whole story, man. I'm really excited about that.
- 6:44But before you leave today, we're gonna have some fun.
- 6:45I've got 100 questions here, Number one through 100.
- 6:48You get to pick the number. I will go with nine.
- 6:51Was that your basketball number? No, I I thought ahead of time.
- 6:55I'm going to do my anniversary dates.
- 6:57Oh, nice, nice, nice. Love that.
- 6:58All right #9 chiching what currently cost money but should
- 7:02be free to everyone. I'm gonna say healthcare, yes, I
- 7:09agree with that. We had that question earlier and
- 7:11quickly as Phillip Redrick from Fort Scott said, apartments
- 7:14living. And I was like, man, that's a
- 7:15really good, like, I'm so shallow.
- 7:17My answer was Internet. Internet should be for everyone.
- 7:20But no healthcare. Healthcare.
- 7:21Is something that can spring up on you.
- 7:23No, 100%. And then it's tied to your
- 7:25employment is. I mean, it's just not right.
- 7:27It's not right, man. Jim, thank you so much.
- 7:29Thanks for ending this. So this has been our first live
- 7:32event. We've never recorded live and
- 7:34out there. No bleep button, no editing,
- 7:36warts and all out there. And so you were a really good
- 7:39anchor to put us on the podcast. So we're gonna take a selfie and
- 7:43then I'm gonna sign off and then we're gonna go eat.
- 7:44Cuz I am, what do we do? Three, almost three hours.
- 7:48I like that. Awesome, man.
- 7:49Thank you so much, Trish. Hey, and thank you for being
- 7:52here on the live recording, man. I can't believe that they talked
- 7:55me into this and we did it and it went really, really well.
- 7:59If you have suggestions on how it could have gone better, put
- 8:01them in the comments. Man, I want to get better at
- 8:03this. And maybe we'll do this next
- 8:04year at 2023 for the USTF CCCA convention that's going to be in
- 8:09Denver. We're gonna be right here.
- 8:10So thank you for being here. Thank you for listening to the
- 8:13Gill Athletics Connections podcast.
- 8:15We are excited for Season 4 coming up on January 2nd.
