- 0:00Welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:01I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson and this is John W Welch.
- 0:05We are really excited to talk with you today about second
- 0:08Nephi chapters 3-4 and five. These are beautiful chapters.
- 0:13Nephi's Psalm, Lehigh's Death, The Separation of the Family,
- 0:18the Building of the temple, these it covers almost possibly
- 0:2230 years, maybe a little over 20, and history.
- 0:26So we've got a lot compacted in three short chapters.
- 0:30But before we get to those parts, we have one other item of
- 0:34business to deal with, and that's Lehigh's blessing to
- 0:37Joseph. Well, let's talk about the four
- 0:39Joseph's then. How can we tell which Joseph
- 0:41we're talking about here, Lynn? Chapter 3 has four different
- 0:44Joseph's mentioned Joseph's son of Jacob as Jackson, Joseph of
- 0:49Egypt, and then Joseph the son of Lehigh.
- 0:52This very, very young boy, he's probably less than 10 at the
- 0:57time. But these prophecies are given
- 0:59like a patriarchal blessing that extends throughout his life.
- 1:01And then he prophesized that through the seed of Joseph, son
- 1:07of Jacob will come forth a seer, a choice seer.
- 1:11And that is, we believe Joseph Smith because he's also named
- 1:16after his father, Joseph Smith. And those are the four Josephs
- 1:20that are in this chapter. And I have in my margins of this
- 1:24chapter 3. Joseph one, Joseph 2, Joseph 3.
- 1:27Because it does get confusing sometimes.
- 1:34But the amazing thing is Lehigh has a record of Joseph.
- 1:38Really, Lehigh has a record that we don't have in our Bibles.
- 1:41It must have been on the brass plate.
- 1:42There's more there. That Joseph's story in Egypt is
- 1:45an amazing story, of course, as as he goes, he's sold into
- 1:50slavery by his brothers. When they come down and need to
- 1:53be helped, they're starving. The famine is going on, and
- 1:57Joseph has risen to such prominence there in Egypt, but
- 2:02he's in a position to be able to save the household of Jacob.
- 2:08All of the 12 sons of Jacob would have died if it hadn't
- 2:13have been for Joseph in Egypt. Lehigh he's a descendant of
- 2:17Joseph, which he says right here in chapter 3 verse four.
- 2:22I am a descendant of Joseph who was carried A captive into
- 2:24Egypt. This is the first time we learn
- 2:26that he is not from Judah, even though he was living in
- 2:29Jerusalem. That's correct.
- 2:30And that gives him a special interest in the story of Joseph.
- 2:34And maybe he knows that enough. Lehigh does that.
- 2:38He names his last born Joseph. And remember Joseph was one of
- 2:42the younger sons. He has one younger brother, but
- 2:45Joseph is one of the youngest. In the 12 tribes of Jacob.
- 2:49Tribes. Yes, and we see the same pattern
- 2:51here. But here we have a a wide
- 2:54expanse of ages between the oldest and the youngest of
- 2:57Lehigh and Soraya's children, and it makes for a complicated
- 3:01family situation. But Lehigh wants them all to to
- 3:05be united and to know that there will be a great blessing that
- 3:09will come from this youngest one.
- 3:16I wanted to start in the text, if you don't mind letting me
- 3:20read from chapter 3, verse 7. Joseph said so he's reading the
- 3:24record from the brass plates of Joseph of Egypt.
- 3:27Thus saith the Lord unto me, a choice seer will I raise up from
- 3:31the fruit of thy loins, and he shall be esteemed highly among
- 3:35the fruit of thy loins. This choice seer he goes on to
- 3:39describe in verse 9, He's going to be like Moses, and he's going
- 3:43to have great knowledge. And this seer will I raise up
- 3:46out of the fruit of thy loins, and unto him will I give power
- 3:50to bring forth my word unto the seed of thy loins.
- 3:54Not to the bringing forth of my word only, saith the Lord, but
- 3:57to the convincing of them of my word which shall already have
- 4:01gone forth among them. He's talking about the Book of
- 4:05Mormon. I think he's saying, And Joseph,
- 4:08you're going to have a record, and this record is going to come
- 4:11forth from the feud of your loins, from this seer.
- 4:14And it is going to in verse 12 confound the false doctrines.
- 4:19What you've been describing here is Joseph Smith.
- 4:22Yes. Who will be this choice seer?
- 4:25Yes, who will be, in a way, like Moses?
- 4:28So it's interesting that Joseph Smith will come, will bring
- 4:32forth the law as Moses did, but he will also organize Israel as
- 4:38Joseph organizes the Church. Joseph Smith, of course, will
- 4:42fulfill many functions and roles because he's bringing forth the
- 4:46fullness of the gospel. But one of those from Lehigh's
- 4:50perspective, is he will now be the successor of the tradition
- 4:54of Moses, which is not just to one tribe, the tribe of Judah.
- 4:59But Moses is bringing together all of the House of Israel and
- 5:03gathering them, as will be said here, from even the Isles of the
- 5:07sea. And they think they are on an
- 5:09island, they say, and so they feel like they are remote.
- 5:14They are obscure, but they will not be forgotten.
- 5:17And the great promise is, I am sure, of this thing, Lehigh
- 5:22says. I am sure of the promise of
- 5:24Moses. For the Lord hath said unto me,
- 5:26I will preserve thy seed forever.
- 5:30So Lehigh knows that his legacy, his seed, will not die out.
- 5:36And indeed, through the survival of the Lamanites and lots of
- 5:40others, the the posterity of Lehigh has survived, and they've
- 5:45gone to the Isles of the sea, as is said here, and a lot of other
- 5:49places, and they will be gathered.
- 5:52And The Gathering is the most important work we should be
- 5:55doing. Now this choice seer who's going
- 5:57to translate the records of Lehigh's descendants, is going
- 6:02to have a record that is going to help teach the truth of the
- 6:07Bible, which is powerful. And I have seen that fulfilled.
- 6:13And I think we know this is Joseph Smith because of verse
- 6:1515. If we haven't been convinced
- 6:17yet, the name that she shall be called after me, and it shall be
- 6:22after the name of his father. There it is.
- 6:24There's our four Josephs right there.
- 6:26And this record, The Book of Mormon that we love and are
- 6:29studying this year, has one main purpose, and that is to testify
- 6:35of the truthfulness of the Bible.
- 6:37We have Jesus's record in the Old World and Jesus's record in
- 6:41the New World. How can we get a clear and
- 6:46coherent understanding of the complexities of the Bible?
- 6:50The Book of Mormon is the answer because it deals with so many
- 6:54things, but from a different time and different perspective.
- 6:57And when you put these two points together, as Tad
- 7:02Collister has said so well, and many others, if you have two
- 7:07points, you have a straight line between those two points.
- 7:11If you just have one point, you can have lots of different lines
- 7:15spinning out of that single point.
- 7:17And I think also it's it goes both ways that there are certain
- 7:22things that we don't find in the Book of Mormon that are then
- 7:26added and clarified by what we have in the Bible.
- 7:30So it's a two way St. we'll take for example Paul's statement
- 7:34about the organization of the church.
- 7:36There were some apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers,
- 7:38evangelists and so forth. We don't have that kind of
- 7:41statement in the book of no. That's 600 years later.
- 7:45So you have to have both. But if you put them together and
- 7:49take what is consistent and compatible between the two you
- 7:53you get the clear and precious and plain things that are
- 7:57necessary and have been restored.
- 8:00This blessing to Joseph then ends again, reminding us of the
- 8:04covenant. These beautiful verses on
- 8:06remember the covenant. I will not break my side.
- 8:09If you would please keep yours. And then in 24 he talks about
- 8:13the mighty wonders, and he wants him to be an instrument in their
- 8:17hands to bring forth God's great work.
- 8:20I feel the same messages are given to us.
- 8:22You know, we as the Latter Day Saints, whether we're from
- 8:26Joseph or not, many of us are adopted into that tribe or one
- 8:30of the 12 tribes to bring forth this great work.
- 8:34So in a sense, this chapter is about us.
- 8:37We are the ones who are trying to confound false doctrines and
- 8:41bring together again the gathering of Israel.
- 8:44And that's how I think these two books will grow together and be
- 8:47one in our hand. When we read them both and read
- 8:51them together, they reinforce mutually one another, the Bible
- 8:56and the Book of Mormon. They aren't inconsistent with
- 8:59each other. They they fill in each other's
- 9:02gaps and we have a fullness when we are through with the two
- 9:06reading. And in fact, let's look at verse
- 9:0912 for just a minute where Lehigh says something very
- 9:13similar to what Ezekiel said in chapter 37.
- 9:17And bear in mind that Ezekiel and Lehigh were contemporaries
- 9:21of each other. Lehigh may be a little older,
- 9:24but the image and the idea of two sticks that will be brought
- 9:31together somehow. And a stick is a scroll.
- 9:34That's where their scriptures were.
- 9:35And those two sticks, it says, shall come together, and for the
- 9:40reunification and the of Israel, and also the clarification of
- 9:47doctrine. So this is a relatively obscure
- 9:52passage, but it becomes completely clear through the
- 9:55fulfilment of this prophecy by the Book of Mormon.
- 10:00There's nothing else that comes close to fulfilling this
- 10:03prophecy, as does the Book of Mormon.
- 10:11Chapter 3 finishes the blessing of Joseph and then in chapter
- 10:14four we have the blessings to the grandchildren and Sam and
- 10:19Ishmael's children and the daughters.
- 10:23And I love the fact that he goes back again to the images for the
- 10:27Garden of Eden and says you children will not be punished
- 10:31for your parents sins. You will may have to have some
- 10:34of the consequences of living their lifestyles, but you will
- 10:39not be punished. Those punishments will go on
- 10:42your own. You know right from the start
- 10:44this idea that we are not punished for Adam's
- 10:46transgressions and Jack, this was revolutionary in in
- 10:49understanding the scriptures and we need the Book of Mormon here
- 10:53to get these kind of details. To see it applied that way, of
- 10:56course there was a principle in Deuteronomy, chapter 24, verse
- 11:0016, which is an interesting one, right in the law.
- 11:04Deuteronomy says the fathers shall not be put to death for
- 11:08the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the
- 11:11fathers. Every man shall be put to death
- 11:14for his own sin. Joseph Smith expresses this idea
- 11:19in the second article of faith. We believe that a man will be
- 11:21punished for his own sins and not for Adam's transgressions.
- 11:25And he could have added and not for his children's or his
- 11:28parents transgressions either. We are individually accountable
- 11:33for what we do. And and this is so normal to us
- 11:36in our faith tradition, we don't realize this is a different
- 11:41theology than others have. That's right.
- 11:44And in the laws of different nations at the time of Lehigh,
- 11:50it was common for children to be put to death for the wrongs of
- 11:55their their parents. For example, in the Law of
- 11:59Hammurabi, if a doctor operates on someone's child and the child
- 12:04dies, the punishment is that the doctor's child will be put to
- 12:08death. Oh dear.
- 12:10But but this idea that that somehow justice has to balance
- 12:15things out, or that that's that's the best way to get
- 12:19doctors or other people, that's a principle that could apply to
- 12:24many different kinds of situations.
- 12:25But it was a misunderstanding. But Deuteronomy makes it clear
- 12:28that we are individually responsible for even within the
- 12:33family. We're not responsible for what
- 12:35our parents do and we're and our children are not responsible for
- 12:39what. And even though we read that in
- 12:42Deuteronomy, with Lehigh restating it, here we get the
- 12:47clarification because in the 19th century most of
- 12:50Christianity believed in the depravity of man.
- 12:52Humanity is born in wickedness, and they are naturally evil, and
- 12:57they are doomed for Satan's world unless they come unto
- 13:03Christ. And Lehigh does not give that
- 13:05message as he finishes up these beautiful blessings.
- 13:08And skipping down to verse 12, it came to pass that after my
- 13:12father Lehigh had spoken unto his household according to his
- 13:15feelings of his heart and the spirit of the Lord which was in
- 13:19him, he waxed old, and it came to pass that he died and was
- 13:22buried. And from this point forward we
- 13:30get Nephi's beautiful Psalm. And I see it so appropriately
- 13:34after the death, because there is a time of mourning and
- 13:37lamentation, and I don't know if he's writing this immediately
- 13:42and then retranslates it later and records it in his record,
- 13:45because we don't think he's really writing this record until
- 13:48years later. But whenever he's writing it,
- 13:51this is one of the most human sides of Nephi we see.
- 13:56We're taking a look into his heart.
- 13:58I love Nephi's Psalm. Nephi also shows here not just
- 14:03his ability to share his emotions.
- 14:08He he is an open person who admits his weaknesses.
- 14:13He realizes our vulnerability. Maybe he's learned this by the
- 14:20hardship and the disappointments.
- 14:23And maybe thinking, I wonder what I could have done to to
- 14:27have been better to laymen and Lemuel so we wouldn't have
- 14:29divided. Lehigh is now dead and Lee we
- 14:33can't look to Lehigh to bring us together anymore.
- 14:38So Nephi it's. Very reflective.
- 14:40He he is. He's very honest, very candid,
- 14:44and it's a good model for us. Lots of times we we need to
- 14:49admit our weaknesses and admit our problems and within the
- 14:54family, let people know how much we we rely on each other.
- 15:00And Nephi yearns for that. And so Nephi takes some time I
- 15:06think, to compose this. I do too, I.
- 15:09I don't think that this beautiful composition just
- 15:15somehow rolls off the the tongue, and particularly as as
- 15:22it's being inscribed on the plates.
- 15:25This is kind of Nephi's farewell to his father, but also his
- 15:30recognition that without his father, on whom he has relied so
- 15:34much, he now must turn even more to the Lord.
- 15:40You mentioned the idea that this is a lament.
- 15:44We have a book in the Old Testament called Lamentations.
- 15:47Jeremiah. And of course, Jeremiah saw a
- 15:50lot of things to lament over. Lamentations were often composed
- 15:54and used in connection with funerals because that's when
- 15:58people mourn, and sometimes for prolonged periods.
- 16:03And they had songs of mourning and lamentation to help emote
- 16:09and to unload the the burdens and the problems that and the
- 16:14loneliness and the loss that they're carrying.
- 16:18These Lamentations show up not just in Hebrew literature or or
- 16:24in the Old Testament. They also show up in other
- 16:28ancient, Near Eastern and classical languages.
- 16:32I was fascinated to see that Nephi's Psalm follows this
- 16:35ancient structure. I looked at some laments in the
- 16:38Psalms Psalm 13 and 34, Seventy 140, as well as the Jeremiah
- 16:44text, and they all start with an invocation and then their
- 16:48complaint, and then they do this confession of trust.
- 16:52After they describe their own weaknesses, they trust in God.
- 16:56Then they have their petition to God, and it ends with this
- 17:00promise and vowed to God that they will follow.
- 17:03And I just think of Joseph Smith translating this lickety split
- 17:06as fast as a quill could go. And he had no idea of this
- 17:11ancient pattern, and I only know of it in the Old Testament.
- 17:13But you said there are patterns of this outside of the Old
- 17:16Testament. Some Homeric.
- 17:17Structure of this of the. Limitations as well.
- 17:20Yes, OK, well, it's it's exactly right here.
- 17:23It's a bullseye. This text is an ancient text.
- 17:26This is one of another evidence of the Book of Mormon.
- 17:29Yeah, and it is. It's a beautiful passage.
- 17:32And it's it's not just following mechanically a, you know,
- 17:38stylized kind of lamentation. He's not just pretending this
- 17:44this is so personal. Oh, let's get in the text to see
- 17:47the personality of it, because it is personal.
- 17:49Let's just dive right in chapter 4.
- 17:51So starting in verse 15 I write the things of my soul right
- 17:55there. It tells us Jack, he is going to
- 17:57be open and transparent with us here.
- 18:00And he says his soul delights in scripture, which is very evident
- 18:04because he quotes the Old Testament of the brass plates
- 18:06over and over but he ponders them.
- 18:10What a what a good example for me.
- 18:12But verse 16 is where he starts this beautiful lament.
- 18:17Yes, go ahead. Behold, my soul delighteth in
- 18:20the things of the Lord, and my heart pondereth continually upon
- 18:25the things which I have seen and heard.
- 18:29This is a nice couplet of parallelism, and this will
- 18:32happen in many of these verses. Where the verses are actually
- 18:36two parts, they complement each other.
- 18:38Here he's saying, my soul delights in the things of the
- 18:42Lord. So this would be all anything
- 18:45pertaining to the Lord, especially in in Nephi's world,
- 18:51the scriptures, the temple, the sacrifices that were being made,
- 18:59the teachings and instructions, and my heart ponderous
- 19:04continually upon the things which I have seen and heard.
- 19:07His own personal experiences. That's right.
- 19:10That personal revelation here is put maybe not on par, but at
- 19:13least coupled with the things of the Lord.
- 19:16And we follow that model too, that the scriptures are
- 19:20scripture, but they need to be adapted and and implemented and
- 19:27personalized. And notice he says, My heart
- 19:30pondereth continually upon the things which I have seen and
- 19:35heard. So he hasn't forgotten the
- 19:37visions that he has seen. He he hasn't forgotten the words
- 19:42that the Lord has spoken to him. He probably more than just
- 19:46ponders them. He's probably reciting them,
- 19:49remembering them. They have that tradition of
- 19:52memorizing books of scripture. Yeah, exactly.
- 19:56But from this beautiful little 2 verses here, 17 now says.
- 20:02Notwithstanding the great goodness of the Lord in showing
- 20:05this great marvelous work, my heart exclaimeth And here he
- 20:09goes. O wretched man, that I am, Yeah,
- 20:13my heart sorroweth because of my flesh.
- 20:15My soul grieveth because of my iniquities.
- 20:18I am encompassed about with temptations and sins, and they
- 20:22so easily beset me. He becomes a real person to me
- 20:25here. Yes, he knows the goodness of
- 20:27God. Then why does he have a bad
- 20:29thought about his brothers or why does he get angry about in
- 20:32some little thing? You know, I this is just, I
- 20:35think all of us can just slip into Nephi's life here and say I
- 20:39have the same experience. And when I desire to rejoice, my
- 20:44heart groans because of my sins. You know our our consciences
- 20:48kind of come in there and try to cut us off.
- 20:52We know who's presenting those things to to not allow us to
- 20:56have these spiritual experiences, to raise doubts in
- 20:59our minds and in our spirits. Nevertheless, he says, I know in
- 21:04whom I have trusted, Amen. And I think that we can all say
- 21:08that we know in whom we have trusted.
- 21:11We We may not know all of God's purposes, but we know in whom we
- 21:16have trusted. And He can trust him because He
- 21:19continues on to say He's my support during afflictions in my
- 21:23wildernesses, and He has filled me with His love to the
- 21:28consuming of my flesh. Now I have never experienced
- 21:31that, but I've never experienced the trials that He has either.
- 21:33And if there is opposition, perhaps that's why but the
- 21:36consuming of my flesh. What does that mean?
- 21:39I don't know. Well, the flesh, of course, is
- 21:43in opposition to the Spirit. And so I think he's saying that
- 21:48when the Spirit comes to us, our flesh becomes less significant.
- 21:54We become less conscious of these sins.
- 21:57They they fade into the background and we can now
- 22:02concentrate on the Lord and on his righteousness.
- 22:05And the Spirit is the cleansing power, so the the the sins would
- 22:08be cleansed. And that's when he remembers
- 22:11back to the time when his enemies quaked before him.
- 22:14And he talks about his visions in 23 and the prayers and the
- 22:18angels that came. I just love every word of this
- 22:22Psalm. And yet he then asks again in 27
- 22:27Why should I yield to sin because of my flesh?
- 22:31Why should I give way to temptation?
- 22:33I'm I'm sure we've all asked ourselves this question.
- 22:36Why should my soul linger in the valley of sorrow, and my flesh
- 22:42waste away, and my strength slacken because of mine
- 22:46afflictions? This is such an important
- 22:48question. And notice he will ask why?
- 22:51Why? Why?
- 22:51Why there are 4 why's there? We've mentioned this before that
- 22:56Elder Ballard has encouraged us to ask these why questions.
- 23:01He once said. He once said that the why
- 23:05question will be the most likely question to help open ourselves
- 23:10to revelation. And he says, why am I angry?
- 23:14Because of my iniquity. Now these, of course, are
- 23:17rhetorical questions. And then the answers start
- 23:20coming in 28. Here is where he answers his
- 23:22whys. That's right.
- 23:24And he starts out by quoting Awake.
- 23:26My soul no longer dupin, sin, Rejoice my heart, and give place
- 23:31no more to the enemy of my soul. Do not anger again because of
- 23:35mine enemies. So that's the enemy of his soul,
- 23:37is that he's getting angry about his enemies.
- 23:39Or or his brothers. I think that's who he's
- 23:42referring to. Yep.
- 23:43Do not slacken my strength because of mine affliction.
- 23:46Rejoice, O my heart. Cry unto the Lord.
- 23:49And it's interesting. If heart means mind as well,
- 23:52then in addition to emotions, then he's saying, I have got to
- 23:55control my thoughts and I've got to control my emotions.
- 23:59And I'm going to take charge and I am going to cry unto the Lord.
- 24:03This is all verse 30. Lord, I will praise thee
- 24:06forever. Yeah, I will rejoice in thee, my
- 24:08God, my rock of my salvation. So how do we leave the times
- 24:12when we're encompassed by our sins and our frustrations and
- 24:15our enemies and our anger? Well, he gives us a step by step
- 24:21process where we can go through this, a handbook.
- 24:24And you begin. I will cry unto the Lord.
- 24:28You address the Lord and he will begin here a series of O Lords,
- 24:35six of them. O Lord, I will praise thee
- 24:39forever. That's making a promise.
- 24:41By being thankful, you get out of your own point of view.
- 24:47You're thinking more of how much you appreciate and are benefited
- 24:52by what he has done. Not only will I do this, I will
- 24:56do this forever. Yeah, my soul will rejoice in
- 25:01thee, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
- 25:06You know that that phrase rock of my salvation is also in the
- 25:09Psalms. Nephi is drawing upon a number
- 25:13of Psalm phrases. It's almost like a mosaic of the
- 25:16psalms. Here and you wonder, how can he
- 25:19pull these phrases together? I think they had memorized.
- 25:22Which psalms had he memorized? Most of them?
- 25:25When would they have memorized them?
- 25:27As they sang upon the their walking, and as they he was in
- 25:30Jerusalem. But mostly in the temple, the
- 25:33Psalms is the hymn book. Of course, but.
- 25:37But they probably didn't have each had their.
- 25:40Own hymnal. Their hymnal where they could, I
- 25:42don't. Think so?
- 25:43They had to have them memorized. And I think they also, we have
- 25:46indications that as they went to the temple, they would sing
- 25:50these songs as they walked. Yes, yes, the songs, The hymns
- 25:53of ascent. Yeah, yeah, Verse 31.
- 25:56Wilt thou redeem my soul? Now this is so interesting to me
- 25:59because do you remember Lehi finishes by saying the Lord will
- 26:03redeem my soul from hell. And here Nephi is asking the
- 26:06same question. You've shown me such great and
- 26:09wonderful things, and I still blow it.
- 26:10I still fall, I still become a victim to anger.
- 26:14And then he says. Will you still do?
- 26:16It will you redeem my soul. Let's look at that word redeem
- 26:19for just a minute. Oh, I love it.
- 26:21Because the concept of redemption, we think of it just
- 26:27in a theological sense. But if you go to Leviticus
- 26:31chapter 25 for the end of that chapter, there are several
- 26:35verses that talk about the Redeemer and if you become a
- 26:44slave, or if you become so poor that you have to indenture
- 26:50yourself to someone else and work for that person.
- 26:54You need a Redeemer to buy you back.
- 26:55That's right. And who can be your Redeemer?
- 26:59It has to be a relative of yours, has to be a family
- 27:03member. Otherwise, you know, if you're
- 27:07maybe you have a neighbor who isn't your relative, but he
- 27:11thinks, well, I'd like to have that person come work for me.
- 27:14Oh, so he's not doing it to get you out of slavery, He's trying
- 27:17to do it to increase your servitude?
- 27:19But you don't want to create a market no where people can say,
- 27:22well, I'll buy that person. Or you don't want a situation
- 27:24where you have become a slave or an indentured worker to someone
- 27:30and that person says, well, I don't like what you're doing.
- 27:33So a Redeemer is a family member.
- 27:34So I'll put you up for sale in the marketplace.
- 27:37They can't do that. He can say I will release you
- 27:40and let you go home, but there are only certain people who have
- 27:44the right to come in and redeem you.
- 27:47And Jesus is our brother, and so he is a relative who can come
- 27:54and exercise the right of redemption.
- 27:57Now what Nephi is asking for here is be come and redeem my
- 28:03soul. I am at risk of becoming a
- 28:08captive, a slave of the devil, and you can come and buy me.
- 28:15Give me my freedom. Continuing in verse 31, do you
- 28:18see down there the last line? He's asking the Lord to help him
- 28:23shake at the appearance of sin. Oh, yes.
- 28:25That's wonderful. I know.
- 28:27I just tried that in my own lives.
- 28:28What does that shake? What does that mean to shake?
- 28:30Recognize that what I'm about to do is offensive to God.
- 28:35Help me to be repulsed from it. Help me to be repel.
- 28:38How about afraid of It? Yes.
- 28:40Shake at the fear of it. OK, shaking at the fear.
- 28:44Of it, knowing the consequences of it, after expressing his
- 28:48willingness, want to be delivered, want to be redeemed
- 28:53and shaking at sin, rejecting it.
- 28:57Now he wants the Lord to do his part, and the Lord is requested
- 29:02to may the gates of hell be shut continually before me.
- 29:06Because that's the redemption that he needs.
- 29:08He needs to be redeemed from hell.
- 29:10Yeah, and who's going to shut those gates?
- 29:12Oh, Jesus Christ. And that will happen because my
- 29:15heart is broken and my spirit has contrite.
- 29:18So there we have again the broken heart and contrite
- 29:21spirit. Oh Lord, wilt thou not shut thy
- 29:24gates of thy righteousness Before me?
- 29:27Let me walk in the path of the low valley that I may be strict.
- 29:32In the plain Rd. we talk about the covenant path.
- 29:36And here the promise is if you'll let me walk in that
- 29:40pathway. I know it's the low path,
- 29:42meaning it's in the valley. I'm not having to climb up over
- 29:46rugged mountains. The Covenant path is smooth.
- 29:50It's nice. It's there's probably water
- 29:53along the side of it. But I will be able to walk in
- 29:56the low Valley, and if so, I will be strict in the plain Rd.
- 30:01What does that mean? I won't wander.
- 30:04I'll be strict in keeping all of the observances and the needs of
- 30:09walking in the covenant. And the way we go from flirting
- 30:14with the gates of hell to the gates of righteousness is
- 30:18through having a broken heart and contrite spirit and strict
- 30:23in walking on the Lord's path. Because Christ says I am the
- 30:28way. This is what he's saying.
- 30:30The plain Rd. can mean that it's plain and obvious, but it also
- 30:36can be like a plain it's level. It's not filled with rocks and
- 30:40bumps and things like that. And that's the way the path of
- 30:43righteousness is, is a plain way.
- 30:46Sometimes we over complicate things and we you know, we wish
- 30:50life were more exciting and you know things like that.
- 30:53But the plainness and the simplicity in many people, Jesus
- 30:57say, says, well, we'll stumble because of the plainness, the
- 31:01simpleness of the way. And then comes my favorite
- 31:04verse, verse 33. Oh Lord, wilt thou encircle me
- 31:08roundabout in the robe of thy righteousness?
- 31:11Oh Lord, will thou make my escape before my enemies?
- 31:16Will. They'll make my path straight
- 31:18before me. Will they'll not place a
- 31:20stumbling block in my way, but that I would clear my way before
- 31:24me and hedge on up my way the ways of my enemy.
- 31:27This reminds me of that ancient definition of the atonement.
- 31:31The ancient definition. Do you remember?
- 31:33Hugh Nibley describes this, Cahar, The idea that you're
- 31:36escaping from your enemies. You're running in the
- 31:38wilderness. You're fleeing and you prostate
- 31:40yourself before the tent of a Sheikh, pleading for redemption,
- 31:45pleading for safety and and food and security and help me for my
- 31:48enemies. And then if the Sheikh will take
- 31:51the door flap of this tent or or his own clothing, whatever, and
- 31:55he covers you as you're fleeing, and then you embrace in this
- 32:01opening of the tent, of this opening of the Tabernacle, you
- 32:04embrace and then you're welcomed into his presence for safety.
- 32:07If that is the root word for a tone, Nephi is describing it
- 32:11perfectly. Here he is going to be encircled
- 32:14in the robes of righteousness after he has escaped from sin.
- 32:19His enemy is sin. It's not his brothers.
- 32:21It's sin. And as you say, the the Hebrew
- 32:25word cofer can mean to cover, and the powers of Christ cover a
- 32:32multitude of sins. And what we're asking for here
- 32:37as the gates of righteousness, those are the temple doors.
- 32:41I think the whole thing is temple symbolism.
- 32:43The robes of righteousness are temple.
- 32:44Clothing, putting on temple garments.
- 32:47And if you do that, then the way will be clear and my enemies
- 32:53will have no power over me and I'll be covered.
- 32:59You've got my my needs covered. It's it's such a powerful idea
- 33:06and expressed so beautifully in this Psalm, he continues on in
- 33:10verse 34. I have trusted in thee.
- 33:13So remember back to the the the five stages of the classic
- 33:18lament that you talked about Stage 4.
- 33:20Was that at some point in this lamentation process, the person
- 33:25who is lamenting will make an actual petition will ask that
- 33:29something be done. Pleading to the Lord.
- 33:31It's not just enough to to weep and to mourn, but to say, Lord,
- 33:38what I would like you to do is this.
- 33:41Make a request in honesty and he will answer your request and
- 33:46hear. What Nephi is asking for is
- 33:49encircle me around in the robe of thy righteousness.
- 33:54He doesn't want to be made. A king doesn't want a King's
- 33:56robe. He simply wants to have the
- 33:58righteousness as the the aegis, the the protection and the
- 34:05lament. Pattern then ends with stage 5,
- 34:10where you make some kind of a vow of praise, and verses 34 and
- 34:1635 do exactly that. I have trusted in thee, and I
- 34:19will trust in thee forever. There's the there's the vow.
- 34:22Isn't it right there? He keeps going.
- 34:24I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh.
- 34:26For I know that cursed is he that put this trust in the arm
- 34:29of flesh. Yay, cursed is he that pursed
- 34:31his trust in man or maketh the flesh his arm.
- 34:34I know that God will give me liberally to him who asketh.
- 34:38Yay, my God will give me if I ask not amiss.
- 34:43And that is so beautifully because he's it.
- 34:45It sounds a little bit like James.
- 34:47You know when James says you've got to ask and God will give you
- 34:50liberally. At least the word is twice used
- 34:53in both those verses. Not that he's the quitting the
- 34:55same, but we everything we ask for is not for our best.
- 34:59We have to say thy will be done and we have to say good, better,
- 35:03best if I ask, not amiss. I think it's a huge addition to
- 35:08all of our prayers, all of our petitions, all of our vows.
- 35:11And then in reciprocity, what can we offer?
- 35:15And Nephi finishes by saying, Here's what I'll do for you,
- 35:19Lord, I will lift up my voice unto thee.
- 35:22I will cry unto thee, my God, the rock of righteousness,
- 35:26Behold, my voice shall forever ascend up unto thee my rock and
- 35:32mine everlasting God. Amen.
- 35:35Amen. That is the Psalm of Nephi,
- 35:39Chapter four, one of the most powerful open hearted prophets.
- 35:45Messages that we can all apply. And I remember reading this and
- 35:50starting to notice how, O Lord, O Lord, O Lord, how many times
- 35:57does he use O Lord, Because with six O Lords and four other times
- 36:02just Lord, which is 10. Now the word Lord here is almost
- 36:07always a translation of the word Jehovah Yafei.
- 36:13And that cannot be pronounced under Jewish ritual procedures
- 36:18in the Temple out loud except and there is an exception and
- 36:22you know when it. Is Day of Atonement at the Veil
- 36:24Day of. Atonement and the High priest
- 36:28can then speak the name of Jehovah out loud 10 times, but
- 36:35it has to be 10 because 10 is the perfect number.
- 36:40So you were you were right that this has a lot of Day of
- 36:44Atonement overtones. And Joseph Smith translated this
- 36:49by the gift and power of God. He would never have known that
- 36:53little Old Testament detail. And isn't it?
- 36:56You know, I just want to say that a lot of these insights
- 37:00that I am grateful for have come to me when I've been trying to
- 37:06serve other people. I don't think that these kinds
- 37:10of insights or understandings or awareness and internalizing
- 37:18these things are are just given to us for our personal
- 37:22amusement. They are given to us when we are
- 37:27blessing other people so that we can bless other people.
- 37:32And I think that's what Nephi is doing here, too.
- 37:35He wants to bless his children and grandchildren.
- 37:39He wants to bless the efforts that they are now turning to, as
- 37:44they say farewell to Lehigh. And now we'll turn attention to
- 37:49building a temple. That's Chapter 5.
- 37:51And that's where we go next. And the Nephites?
- 37:58Before they can build the temple, there is a separation.
- 38:02So the brothers have finally, now that Lehi has died, they
- 38:06finally start attacking Nephi to try to kill him.
- 38:08As I mentioned last week when we went through the organization of
- 38:12all these parallels between first Nephi and 2nd Nephi, this
- 38:14is one of them. Lehi's family had to leave
- 38:17Jerusalem, and now Nephi's family will have to leave the
- 38:20land of their first inheritance. And as they do so, they don't
- 38:24really want to, but they're able to take with them the records,
- 38:30the brass plates, the Liahona, which was then called the
- 38:33compass or the ball. It's not called the Liahona till
- 38:35later. Lots of people come, everybody.
- 38:38In fact, it says also my sisters.
- 38:41Now this is the first references sisters.
- 38:43Some people have suggested the sisters were born between Jacob
- 38:46and Joseph. And that's why it's my last born
- 38:49in the wilderness that there was in between Jacob and Joseph, you
- 38:52know, had this second family almost kind of an idea, all
- 38:55those who believe in the warnings of the revelation of
- 38:58God, wherefore they did hearken unto my words.
- 39:02And they took their tents. And just like Lehigh did they,
- 39:05they did it again. They also take the Sword of
- 39:08Laban and they go out and it says in verse 16, once they get
- 39:13to this new place, it says many days that they're traveling.
- 39:15But once they get there, I did build a temple, and I did
- 39:19construct it after the manner of the Temple of Solomon.
- 39:21So I don't know if that meant it was 90 feet by 30 feet by 30
- 39:25feet or if that meant we just had a holy of holies and a holy
- 39:27place. But this is so interesting
- 39:29because we have not had they, they're not from Aaron.
- 39:33They're not of the priesthood authority.
- 39:36This is coming because of the Holy Order of God, which we'll
- 39:39talk about more next week. But they're building this
- 39:42temple. One of the very first objections
- 39:45that was raised by Alexander Campbell against the Book of
- 39:48Mormon in 1831 was the idea that there can only be one place
- 39:53where there is a proper temple. Oh, OK.
- 39:55Because Deuteronomy chapter 12 talks about the place and trying
- 40:00to centralized the worship of Jehovah there in Jerusalem.
- 40:04And so he said this. There's a problem here, but in
- 40:08fact. We do find archaeologically that
- 40:12there were temples in many other places in ancient Israel.
- 40:16Jerusalem was not the only place.
- 40:19We don't know exactly when and why they used those other
- 40:22temples, but we know that there were several.
- 40:24He ends verse 16 by saying and the workmanship thereof was
- 40:28exceeding fine, and then he talks about there being
- 40:31industrious and laboring with their hands.
- 40:33And doesn't that make you think of some temples that have been
- 40:35built? Yes, like Kirtland.
- 40:39And Salt Lake and so many others.
- 40:42The the dedication of temples comes not from the materials
- 40:46that are put into it, but by the the hearts and the devotion that
- 40:52go into the planning and the labor.
- 40:54And some people giving their lives to make these temples
- 40:58possible. And I think Nephi wants us to be
- 41:02clear that the workmanship we gave it our very best.
- 41:08I also think it's significant that the Old Testament, at least
- 41:12initially before the the first captivities centered around the
- 41:15temple. It's not until later that they
- 41:18start centering around the law, but the temple was the central
- 41:22focus and here we see the same pattern.
- 41:24This is an ancient text and then verse 27 says they live after
- 41:33the manner of happiness. So verse 28 says he's been 30
- 41:38years, have passed away, they've got the temple built, they've
- 41:40got teachers teaching, they're living after the manner of
- 41:42happiness. And it's only been 30 years
- 41:44since they left Jerusalem. But then there's only just a
- 41:47couple verses. We talk about making other
- 41:50plates before it's 40 years, so we really jump a huge section of
- 41:55time here. So Nephi says here that I had
- 41:58kept the records upon my plates of Nephi, which we would call
- 42:03the large plates of Nephi. And the large plates of Nephi
- 42:08begin with the book of Lehi. So we had Lehi's work, and then
- 42:13Nephi has been writing kind of his chronicle of what they've
- 42:17been doing. But now he is inspired to make
- 42:21another set of plates, and this is for the prophet of thy
- 42:26people, and on them will be Engraven, the things which are
- 42:32pleasing to God. I think it's important that the
- 42:37second set of plates is being created in connection with the
- 42:41consecration of Jacob and Joseph as priests and teachers, because
- 42:48the first set of plates will be will remain the record of the
- 42:53the public officers, the history, and that the large
- 42:59place will then serve the king and the royal household.
- 43:04But now we're going to have a sacred record.
- 43:07Well, these three chapters are some of the most beautiful
- 43:10chapters in all of Second Nephi. And they testify of Christ.
- 43:14And I add my testimony that Jesus is the Christ, the
- 43:18Redeemer of the world, and they testify of the Atonement and the
- 43:21way that we can remove ourselves from sin through repentance and
- 43:24forgiveness. This is one reason why I love
- 43:28the Book of Mormon. And the Book of Mormon never
- 43:32disappoints me at all levels of spiritual instruction, of
- 43:38truthfulness, of brilliant interaction with other
- 43:43traditions and texts, solving personal problems and family
- 43:48problems and national problems. But most of all, helping us, as
- 43:55Nephi does when he pours out his soul to be on a good
- 44:00relationship with our Heavenly Father and with our Savior,
- 44:04Jesus Christ, and knowing that he is our Redeemer, makes life
- 44:13meaningful and happy and joyous for me, and I'm sure, for
- 44:19everyone who takes this and integrates it into their lives.
- 44:25And I say that in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
- 44:27Amen.
