- 0:02Speaker 1: He is one of the hosts of The Philly Show.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Ruben mar Junior joining us right now, Ruben, let's get
- 0:07Speaker 2: right to biz. This is business Day. So what do
- 0:09Speaker 2: we think about what the Phillies did? And Bryce Harper
- 0:13Speaker 2: is back in the outfield.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Huh Yeah. I think they addressed a need that they
- 0:18Speaker 3: really had. I mean, obviously this team is not very
- 0:21Speaker 3: strong on base percentage wise. They don't have the type
- 0:23Speaker 3: of hitter that Luisa Rise provides. And you know, all
- 0:28Speaker 3: the things that you sort of want out of the
- 0:30Speaker 3: guys that are table setters in a lineup. He provides
- 0:34Speaker 3: those things and he's one of the best. I mean,
- 0:38Speaker 3: he's close to a Tony Gwynn that you can kind
- 0:42Speaker 3: of get in this day and age in my from
- 0:45Speaker 3: my standpoint, and him being at the top of the
- 0:48Speaker 3: lineup is huge. And Bryce Harper he put his money
- 0:52Speaker 3: where his mouth was. He said he would move if
- 0:55Speaker 3: the Phillies acquired a impact type of a player. They
- 0:59Speaker 3: acquired one, and they're moving him out to the outfield.
- 1:03Speaker 4: All right, So where does he fit in this lineup?
- 1:06Speaker 4: And is this really an impact because his style is
- 1:10Speaker 4: something they don't have. But putting him in the lineup.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Where does he make the most impact.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I think at the top of the lineup. I think
- 1:19Speaker 3: he's a one hole guy, and you put Turner in two,
- 1:22Speaker 3: you go with Parper three, and then you move shoreward
- 1:24Speaker 3: to four, which is probably where he should hit that
- 1:28Speaker 3: That would be my setup, and then Boem five, probably
- 1:33Speaker 3: marsh six, Real, Muto seven, Stot eight, something like that,
- 1:39Speaker 3: and then Crawford nine. I know you're lining up a
- 1:41Speaker 3: whole lot of left handers in that lineup, but you know,
- 1:45Speaker 3: Luisa Rise is not your typical left hander. It's what
- 1:49Speaker 3: three point fifteen with like an eight hundred ops against lefty,
- 1:52Speaker 3: So that's that's not typical of He's just a good hitter.
- 1:57Speaker 3: And again I say impact inso much that they really
- 2:02Speaker 3: don't have people who grind out it that who put
- 2:06Speaker 3: the ball in play, who do not strike out. Is
- 2:10Speaker 3: he a world beater? Probably not, But they also put him.
- 2:14Speaker 3: They acquired someone that they frankly lacked a lot of,
- 2:21Speaker 3: which is being having the ability to get on base
- 2:25Speaker 3: and work counts and create the domino effect of what
- 2:29Speaker 3: that type of hitter can do at the top of
- 2:30Speaker 3: the lineup.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Do you think he makes an impact and not an impact.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Do you think he makes a change in that sense, Like,
- 2:38Speaker 4: do you think what his game does, like grinding through
- 2:42Speaker 4: our bats, do you think that permeates to other guys
- 2:45Speaker 4: at bats or are these guys all vets and they're
- 2:48Speaker 4: just going to continue to do what they do.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Yeah, we had an emergency pod on the Phillies Show
- 2:53Speaker 3: just recently and I talked about that specifically Gratzy. I mean,
- 2:57Speaker 3: I basically said, listen, anytime you hitter like this, does
- 3:01Speaker 3: it impact the thought process of a veteran hitter beyond this?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Maybe not as.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Much, but perhaps a guy like Stott, or perhaps a
- 3:11Speaker 3: guy like Crawford or the younger guys in that lineup
- 3:15Speaker 3: can learn from this guy. Can watch, can can observe,
- 3:19Speaker 3: can listen. This is a very high energy guy. I
- 3:23Speaker 3: like the way he plays the game. They needed a
- 3:26Speaker 3: little personality in that in that clubhouse, it's sort of
- 3:29Speaker 3: a vanilla ish clubhouse. It's not a lot of guys
- 3:34Speaker 3: with a lot of super fire. Brandon Marsh probably the
- 3:37Speaker 3: fire us guy in that in that clubhouse. But I
- 3:41Speaker 3: do think that that his style of play and his
- 3:44Speaker 3: style of hitting can have an impact on the rest
- 3:46Speaker 3: of the lineup.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Hold On there's not a lot of personality in this clubhouse.
- 3:51Speaker 5: I thought that was all we heard about Harper, Schwarber, Wheeler, Nola, Real, Muto,
- 3:56Speaker 5: Like all we've heard is marsh These guys have all
- 3:59Speaker 5: the personalities, so now they need person I'm the confused,
- 4:01Speaker 5: but sorry.
- 4:03Speaker 3: They I don't not that they don't have personality. They're
- 4:06Speaker 3: just not fiery type of guys. They're very nice, very professional.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Now on the daily from time to time, Price gets fiery,
- 4:18Speaker 3: but not on the daily. If you look at other teams,
- 4:21Speaker 3: you know, I listen, they it's not a bad thing necessarily,
- 4:25Speaker 3: but I just like the inner mix of having somebody
- 4:30Speaker 3: with with a different type of energy. But I don't
- 4:35Speaker 3: I view this team having a having observed them for
- 4:40Speaker 3: the last five years more closely, it is a super professional.
- 4:45Speaker 3: They go about their business. They you know, they're they're perfect,
- 4:51Speaker 3: they're they're pros. But it's not like the crazy, you know,
- 4:56Speaker 3: kind of vibe that you have. And I think it's
- 4:59Speaker 3: one of the reasons is why you know a guy
- 5:01Speaker 3: like Harrison Batter even though he had he's had some
- 5:04Speaker 3: issues obviously and with the Giants and didn't play it
- 5:08Speaker 3: very well, he actually brought a different type of energy
- 5:12Speaker 3: to the clubhouse last year that that provided a little
- 5:15Speaker 3: bit of a spark. Plus he played We're going.
- 5:18Speaker 4: To scoot past that that comment about Harrison, thank you.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Do they still have room in his lineup for another
- 5:28Speaker 4: right hander? We were just talking about if you could
- 5:30Speaker 4: have Luis Robert for free and not have to DFA
- 5:34Speaker 4: somebody because he could get hurt, but he could hit
- 5:37Speaker 4: ten to fifteen homers in fifty games for you. Do
- 5:39Speaker 4: they have a spot in the lineup to make a
- 5:41Speaker 4: last minute move at the trade deadline?
- 5:45Speaker 3: I like to try to get Pete Alonzo out of
- 5:47Speaker 3: the deal. Oh yeah, I'm dropping the mic bro Pete Alonzo.
- 5:53Speaker 3: What listen. If they really want to make a super impact,
- 5:56Speaker 3: that's not gonna happen. But I've been thinking about this
- 5:59Speaker 3: a lot. If they wanted to make the most impact
- 6:03Speaker 3: on their offense, then you slide in that right handed
- 6:06Speaker 3: power bat somewhere in between all you know, the short
- 6:09Speaker 3: bers and the harpers of the world. And I was
- 6:12Speaker 3: one of those guys that. I mean, I like to
- 6:14Speaker 3: go for it, and you know, maybe they were stupid moves,
- 6:17Speaker 3: but I like to be aggressive with great players. And
- 6:20Speaker 3: if they really want to compete with the offense that
- 6:24Speaker 3: the Dodgers are going to provide on the daily. You
- 6:27Speaker 3: get a guy like Pete Alonso somehow, some way, Now
- 6:31Speaker 3: you're looking at a totally different ball club because now
- 6:34Speaker 3: you're putting Turner in the outfield and you're putting Stot
- 6:38Speaker 3: at short.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Shew, you must have been hanging out with Bader. What
- 6:43Speaker 4: about the pitching needs that's needed yet? What is that
- 6:47Speaker 4: last need and how is it? Is it a flex
- 6:51Speaker 4: pitcher that could then move to the pen in the postseason?
- 6:54Speaker 4: Is it somebody that could Dethron Nola as a postseason pitcher.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Play home has been traded.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Yet not yet?
- 7:03Speaker 3: Nope, he'd be the guy because he's been He's done both.
- 7:08Speaker 3: I think that they've those guys have targeted him and
- 7:10Speaker 3: seen him. I don't know. They might be done, but
- 7:13Speaker 3: Daven Browski may may have another one up a sleeve.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I think that they did a nice job by by
- 7:20Speaker 3: acquiring Raley because their left handed bullpen, even though Alvarado
- 7:24Speaker 3: in the last couple of days has been a little
- 7:25Speaker 3: bit better. I think acquiring Brooks Raley was important. I'd
- 7:31Speaker 3: love to see it. I'd love to see them get
- 7:33Speaker 3: another piece for the bullpen, and or as you talked about,
- 7:37Speaker 3: somebody like a Clay Holmes or a starter such that
- 7:41Speaker 3: if you have a starter and you can work it
- 7:43Speaker 3: through the playoffs whereby you can take one of their
- 7:46Speaker 3: current it becomes four or five, take one of those
- 7:50Speaker 3: guys and side him in the pen and let him,
- 7:52Speaker 3: you know, air it out. That's the thought process as well.
- 7:55Speaker 3: So listen, I'm always about pitching. I know that they're
- 7:59Speaker 3: am offensively. They did need some help as well with
- 8:02Speaker 3: the type of player that Luisa Rise is. But if
- 8:06Speaker 3: they can anytime you can acquire more pitching, man, I'm
- 8:09Speaker 3: all about it.

- 9:09Speaker 2: in the business of insurance.
- 9:13Speaker 5: By the way, Yeah, I know we all love Dave
- 9:15Speaker 5: Dombrowski on here, but man, you are under the Dave
- 9:18Speaker 5: Dombrowski tree. You went for it, and then Pete Alonzo
- 9:21Speaker 5: and then who else do you want to get? I mean,
- 9:23Speaker 5: you're not too late to get Schooble. Maybe the Phillies
- 9:25Speaker 5: can make a trade for schoobl even though he's already
- 9:26Speaker 5: been traded route Clay Holmes. I mean, there's a lot
- 9:29Speaker 5: of people that I mean, this is awesome. I love
- 9:32Speaker 5: this crazy idea that you have. It's not gonna happen.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Is there any other Bobby Witt? Was Bobby Witten play
- 9:37Speaker 5: for the Phillies? Maybe?
- 9:40Speaker 4: Uh?
- 9:40Speaker 3: You know, it is interesting to you know, certain gms
- 9:43Speaker 3: do different things these days.
- 9:44Speaker 5: You just never know.
- 9:45Speaker 3: I mean, I was it was always worth the inquiry
- 9:48Speaker 3: and I was one of those guys when I was
- 9:49Speaker 3: a GM to try to make uh, you know, to
- 9:52Speaker 3: talk about the players that you felt like were impossible
- 9:56Speaker 3: to get. Gian Carlos Stanton when he was with the
- 9:59Speaker 3: Marlins back in the day. I mean, I I once
- 10:02Speaker 3: told what I think I think it was. Uh, I
- 10:06Speaker 3: can't remember which GM it was. I told him I
- 10:09Speaker 3: trade him my entire organization for for him at the time,
- 10:12Speaker 3: because that's that was a huge need that we had.
- 10:14Speaker 3: But you do not get a deal done unless you try.
- 10:19Speaker 3: You got to shoot your shot. I don't I think
- 10:21Speaker 3: that's an impossibility. And it's uh, I don't think it's
- 10:24Speaker 3: gonna happen with Peter Anzo, but I bring up his
- 10:27Speaker 3: name because I don't think that the the Orioles are
- 10:29Speaker 3: gonna be buyers. It's clear Atlie Rutchman gone, Uh, they're saying,
- 10:34Speaker 3: you know, Michael Lias is saying they're being there, they're
- 10:36Speaker 3: gonna be buyers and sellers. Well, I mean there's some
- 10:40Speaker 3: talent that the that the Phillies can give back to
- 10:42Speaker 3: him at that even at the major league level, that
- 10:45Speaker 3: that that can help them now, and some guys that
- 10:47Speaker 3: they have they they could move that are controllable. So
- 10:51Speaker 3: I just tossed it out there.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Why not, Okay, here's my here's my question. Are gms
- 10:56Speaker 5: naturally born as Dave Dombrowski, Riven Tomorrow tights or or
- 11:00Speaker 5: are they taught to be that versus a guy that's
- 11:03Speaker 5: a little bit more I don't know, since you mentioned
- 11:06Speaker 5: put them on so Michaelias type, or it's a little
- 11:09Speaker 5: bit more conservative and they won't go for it. Right.
- 11:12Speaker 5: Is it born that way or is it nature verse
- 11:15Speaker 5: nurture born that way or made that way?
- 11:19Speaker 3: You know, I think there's been a development and you
- 11:22Speaker 3: guys were sort of tongue in cheeking it about the prospects.
- 11:26Speaker 3: The reality of it is this, prospects are prospects, and
- 11:29Speaker 3: ninety percent of the time they become suspects. That's the fact.
- 11:33Speaker 3: That is an absolute fact. And when you can acquire
- 11:36Speaker 3: talent that is helping you, right, now and you're trying
- 11:38Speaker 3: to win a World Series today, then to me, and
- 11:42Speaker 3: you're in a position to be able to do at
- 11:44Speaker 3: the talent level that you have, then why not go
- 11:47Speaker 3: for it? I mean that was always my feeling, and
- 11:49Speaker 3: I think that in this day and age, and it
- 11:52Speaker 3: probably started maybe a couple of decades ago, maybe fifteen
- 11:55Speaker 3: years ago. The value of the prospect. I mean there's
- 11:58Speaker 3: a formula that that many of the new the newer
- 12:05Speaker 3: gms and player and you know, presidents of Baseball Operation
- 12:10Speaker 3: are are working under, is that they value them in
- 12:13Speaker 3: a way that is totally different than the way that
- 12:16Speaker 3: I valued those prospects. Yes they're valuable, and yes they
- 12:20Speaker 3: can give you organizational depth, but until they're playing in
- 12:25Speaker 3: the big leagues and helping you become a champion, and
- 12:28Speaker 3: they're just prospects.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Thank you, And I'm with you. And I love talking prospects.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I worked the draft for years or worked all kinds
- 12:36Speaker 2: of prospect talk for years when I worked at the league,
- 12:38Speaker 2: and we have an awesome partnership with Baseball America, and
- 12:41Speaker 2: even they say the same thing, like, let's sift through
- 12:43Speaker 2: what actually matters here. Did you see Sean McAdam from
- 12:46Speaker 2: mass Live has been a great reporter on the Red
- 12:48Speaker 2: Sox for years, so he's just the middleman.
- 12:50Speaker 1: That's what a journalist does.
- 12:51Speaker 2: He had a quote from an executive that we just showed,
- 12:53Speaker 2: and I want to bring it back, saying that it's
- 12:55Speaker 2: one of the most ridiculous trades he's seen in thirty years,
- 13:00Speaker 2: the Adlie Ritchman acquisition for the Red Sox. To me,
- 13:04Speaker 2: it would take a lot more than that to say
- 13:06Speaker 2: most ridiculous trade, Ruben, and then you would think, wait, well,
- 13:10Speaker 2: they definitely traded their top prospect Franklinarius right, No, they didn't.
- 13:13Speaker 2: So here it is some people in the game donned
- 13:15Speaker 2: by what the Red Sox gave up. One evaluator, I'm
- 13:18Speaker 2: absolutely dumbfounded. This is literally one of the most ridiculous
- 13:21Speaker 2: trades I've seen in thirty years. I want to pair that,
- 13:24Speaker 2: Rubin with your thoughts on what went down on Saturday Night.
- 13:28Speaker 1: The Dodgers get Trek Skooble.
- 13:30Speaker 2: The industry can evaluate how they want, but there were
- 13:33Speaker 2: other teams that could have made better offers, including the Brewers,
- 13:36Speaker 2: and I feel like this is all revolving around the
- 13:38Speaker 2: same concept here.
- 13:39Speaker 1: We do have an hour and a half to go.
- 13:41Speaker 2: But right now, when you look at what the Brewers did,
- 13:43Speaker 2: I'm like, best record in baseball two years in a row,
- 13:46Speaker 2: and that's what they're going with at the trade deadline.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Not good enough and a top three farm system.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's the whole point of having a
- 13:55Speaker 3: farm system right to be able to utilize those assets for,
- 14:00Speaker 3: you know, for major league talent. And I I will
- 14:05Speaker 3: go to my grave saying the same thing. Until you
- 14:09Speaker 3: prove to me that that prospect and you have a
- 14:12Speaker 3: crystal ball that you know that that prospect will be
- 14:15Speaker 3: a viable major leaguer who is going to come close
- 14:20Speaker 3: to the production that the player is having right now
- 14:23Speaker 3: that you're acquiring, then he's just a prospect. And and
- 14:29Speaker 3: that's that. That's the reason why it won't be a
- 14:32Speaker 3: j GM ever again, and probably the reason why I
- 14:35Speaker 3: never became one again. The reality of it is, I
- 14:40Speaker 3: think that you know, I think players, it will show
- 14:45Speaker 3: you what they are and more often than not, when
- 14:48Speaker 3: you're playing in the minor leagues versus playing in the
- 14:50Speaker 3: big leagues, it's a totally different world. And I know
- 14:53Speaker 3: that the two other guys that are sitting in this
- 14:56Speaker 3: podcast right now would believe the same thing because they
- 15:00Speaker 3: stepped on a major league field and have won and
- 15:03Speaker 3: lost on it.
- 15:05Speaker 5: Yes, agreed prospects or prospects until they turn into suspects
- 15:09Speaker 5: and the suspect is a major league player. So before
- 15:11Speaker 5: we let you go, Rubin, I just want to know you.
- 15:13Speaker 5: You follow the Phillies way close than I do, close
- 15:15Speaker 5: than the Crats does. Have they done enough with the
- 15:18Speaker 5: moves they've made to get to the World Series and
- 15:21Speaker 5: win the World Series? Because it's World Series or bust
- 15:25Speaker 5: for the Phillies. We all know that, right, the windows closing,
- 15:27Speaker 5: whatever you want to say, moving, Bryce Harper right, Alista Rise,
- 15:30Speaker 5: a second bomb to first stop to third, Real Muto
- 15:33Speaker 5: to left, Boem are you know marsh catching whatever they're
- 15:36Speaker 5: gonna do defensively? Right? Have they done enough to solidify
- 15:40Speaker 5: themselves as a contender, A legitimate contender, not not just
- 15:44Speaker 5: a hey, we can possibly get there if all the
- 15:46Speaker 5: chips fall right, A legitimate contender for the World Series.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Well, I think they're a legitimate contender just because of
- 15:53Speaker 3: the fact that we all know anything can happen in baseball.
- 15:56Speaker 3: They worked very close last year. They didn't have they
- 15:59Speaker 3: didn't have Zach Wheeler, and probably could have and should
- 16:03Speaker 3: have beaten the Dodgers last year. I know that the
- 16:06Speaker 3: Dodgers didn't want to go back to Philadelphia, and had
- 16:09Speaker 3: the Phillies been able to close things down and had
- 16:12Speaker 3: a better bullpen, I think that they need somebody who
- 16:16Speaker 3: is locking it down in the eighth inning to be
- 16:19Speaker 3: able to say, yes, this is definitely a World Series
- 16:25Speaker 3: champion team. And that's still my concern rarely was big.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I'd love to see them get somebody else, and if
- 16:33Speaker 3: they do, then then the answer would be an absolute yes. Otherwise,
- 16:38Speaker 3: there's still a lot of things that have to go
- 16:40Speaker 3: right for them to get there, and one of them
- 16:43Speaker 3: is to make sure that both the big left tanders
- 16:46Speaker 3: in that lineup are crushing, and they did not crush
- 16:51Speaker 3: in July. I fully expect them to get hot in
- 16:55Speaker 3: August and September and hopefully in October. But if those
- 16:59Speaker 3: guys don't do Schwarber and Harper things, then it could
- 17:04Speaker 3: be really troublesome for him.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Was a start the other day from Andrew Painter, something
- 17:11Speaker 4: that Don Browski maybe doesn't need to make the same
- 17:14Speaker 4: move that he was going to make. If Andrew Painter's
- 17:16Speaker 4: game went like it did in the first inning and
- 17:18Speaker 4: not went six innings.
- 17:21Speaker 3: It may have changed maybe some of his priorities. I
- 17:27Speaker 3: really liked. It wasn't as much there was some strong
- 17:31Speaker 3: excuse me, there's some strong result out of him. But
- 17:34Speaker 3: I liked his overall demeanor and his mechanics and the
- 17:39Speaker 3: way he went about it. He could have blown up
- 17:41Speaker 3: after that first inning double homer right out of the shoot,
- 17:43Speaker 3: after struggling in the first part of his career, of
- 17:45Speaker 3: his major league career, with the Phillies being so highly touted,
- 17:49Speaker 3: coming back off the injury finally and getting to pitch
- 17:52Speaker 3: in the big leagues, and he could have crumbled. And
- 17:54Speaker 3: when he came back, you know, and having that kind
- 17:57Speaker 3: of start, he could have crumbled. But he didn't. And
- 18:00Speaker 3: I think that more than anything else that happened on
- 18:03Speaker 3: that day in his last start, sort of for me
- 18:09Speaker 3: as an observer, that would have impacted maybe some of
- 18:13Speaker 3: the decisions that I had to make moving forward. I
- 18:15Speaker 3: think this kid, if he gets close to where he
- 18:18Speaker 3: was when he was twenty years old and twenty one
- 18:21Speaker 3: years old before he had his Tommy John, this kid
- 18:24Speaker 3: had electric stuff, boys electric and his finish on his
- 18:29Speaker 3: pitches were electric. Now he lost that over the last
- 18:33Speaker 3: couple of years because for whatever reason. But from what
- 18:37Speaker 3: I saw yesterday, as far as conviction on the mound
- 18:41Speaker 3: and his want to, Charlie Manning used to talk about
- 18:44Speaker 3: that all the time, is want to. I think that
- 18:46Speaker 3: that was a real positive and I hope it's something
- 18:49Speaker 3: that propels him because this is a guy that at
- 18:51Speaker 3: one point you know you're talking about a guy that
- 18:55Speaker 3: you know you might be talking about a Schemes type
- 18:58Speaker 3: player or someone like that, because of his demeanor, his finish,
- 19:02Speaker 3: his size, all the things that he can do. I
- 19:05Speaker 3: don't know that it'll ever get there, but when I
- 19:08Speaker 3: saw him as a nineteen twenty year old, it was
- 19:11Speaker 3: easy to compare him to some of those big boys.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Ruben, great analysis. We're all on the same page.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Here, go for it, go for it. We're aggressive here.
- 19:22Speaker 2: It's an aggressive for Yeah. I like it a lot
- 19:25Speaker 2: more on the Philly Show too. Like Ruben mentioned, they
- 19:28Speaker 2: did an emergency show earlier today.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Thanks Ruben, talk to you soon, you guys.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Be well.
- 19:34Speaker 2: It's the summertime, aj and this is a time to
- 19:37Speaker 2: feel free wild, make some phone calls that you're overdue for,
- 19:43Speaker 2: and also get some deals that you should be getting
- 19:46Speaker 2: that you deserve.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Yeah, it couldn't be any easier though. It's just one
- 19:49Speaker 5: price for unlimited talk, text and data. It's really simple.
- 19:54Speaker 5: It is one price for all the data and all
- 19:56Speaker 5: the phone calls you could want per month.
- 19:58Speaker 1: It's simple, that's right.

- 20:46Speaker 2: exac mets red Sox. We're going to talk to Zach Scott.
- 20:48Speaker 2: About everything there, Adley ritchmand deal. But let's start with
- 20:51Speaker 2: the Mets here, Zach, great to have you on. Thank
- 20:52Speaker 2: you for the time. Firesale mini fire sale is on
- 20:56Speaker 2: for the Mets, trading about a third of their roster
- 20:58Speaker 2: by the time we get to the end end of
- 21:00Speaker 2: the day. So what do you think about what they've
- 21:02Speaker 2: done so far? And we can include that Luke Weaver
- 21:04Speaker 2: will likely be traded and maybe even in the next
- 21:07Speaker 2: ten minutes while we're chatting over to the Pirates, but
- 21:10Speaker 2: bras Amon and Brooks Raley and aj Minter and Freddie
- 21:13Speaker 2: Peralta thoughts.
- 21:16Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm not going to pretend to be an expert
- 21:17Speaker 6: on the prospect returns that they got, but in general,
- 21:21Speaker 6: as a strategy, I do like what they're doing. I mean,
- 21:25Speaker 6: you never want to be in a position to sell,
- 21:26Speaker 6: especially in a big market like New York, but you
- 21:31Speaker 6: want to make the most of your opportunity when you
- 21:32Speaker 6: know it's a lost season. And so the thing with
- 21:35Speaker 6: the Mets is, because they graduated two really good players
- 21:39Speaker 6: to the big leagues, their farm systems pretty weak. So
- 21:41Speaker 6: this is an opportunity to bring in some depth into
- 21:45Speaker 6: the system. They don't have the types of players. It'll
- 21:47Speaker 6: be interesting to see what they do get for Weaver
- 21:50Speaker 6: because he has another year control. But for most of
- 21:52Speaker 6: their players, they were rentals they didn't have. You know,
- 21:57Speaker 6: they're not going to get top top prospects. But if
- 22:00Speaker 6: you start getting guys that will fall into your ten
- 22:04Speaker 6: to twenty range of prospects, that gives you potential guys
- 22:07Speaker 6: that can help you in the future, but also potential
- 22:09Speaker 6: trade chips to help you rebuild that major league roster.
- 22:12Speaker 6: So I like what they're doing. It's just, you know,
- 22:15Speaker 6: it's a product of where they are and their reality.
- 22:18Speaker 6: But I think they've been doing a decent job given
- 22:20Speaker 6: what they what they're selling, but they're never rebuilding.
- 22:23Speaker 4: So my question is on Luke Weaver. Why a pitcher
- 22:28Speaker 4: that you have had success with this year is good
- 22:31Speaker 4: in New York. You signed to a two year deal,
- 22:34Speaker 4: Why would you be looking to move him at this time?
- 22:37Speaker 4: Because you want to win again next year?
- 22:40Speaker 6: Sure, So that's why I said, I'm curious to see
- 22:44Speaker 6: what they got, because I think to sell a controllable
- 22:47Speaker 6: piece for like you said, a team that should be
- 22:50Speaker 6: trying to compete every year, you got to get you
- 22:52Speaker 6: got to set a pretty high bar. So I'm curious
- 22:54Speaker 6: to see what they how they do on that. I
- 22:57Speaker 6: do think, you know, I actually just tweeted about this
- 22:59Speaker 6: recently to earlier today. Selling high on a player when
- 23:03Speaker 6: you're still trying, you know, you want to win next year,
- 23:05Speaker 6: but you know your season's loss, so you're a seller.
- 23:07Speaker 6: But selling on a selling high on a guy that
- 23:09Speaker 6: has control is one of the hardest things to do
- 23:11Speaker 6: because he's been really good. And you know, if they're saying, well,
- 23:15Speaker 6: we don't believe that he's going to be this good
- 23:17Speaker 6: next year, and or that we could replace him with money,
- 23:20Speaker 6: you know, by using money and free agency, then maybe
- 23:23Speaker 6: it makes sense for them to do this. But obviously
- 23:26Speaker 6: it's taking away a good piece from their bullpen for
- 23:28Speaker 6: next year, so they'll have to find a way to
- 23:30Speaker 6: improve that. And they've taken multiple pieces away obviously with
- 23:34Speaker 6: Brazebon also being controllable, So it'll be interesting interesting to
- 23:37Speaker 6: see the return on that. It should be significantly higher
- 23:40Speaker 6: than some of these other deals they've done.
- 23:43Speaker 5: All right, the Mets, Let's move on to a team
- 23:45Speaker 5: that's actually trying. Here at the Mets, not the met
- 23:47Speaker 5: It's not the Mets. The Mets aren't trying. I want
- 23:49Speaker 5: to know what happens in the front office. There's two
- 23:52Speaker 5: hunderd three hours left, is there? Does everyone have four
- 23:55Speaker 5: cell phones going? Do you if you're the GM, do
- 23:57Speaker 5: you have multiple people talking to you while you have
- 24:00Speaker 5: a cell phone?
- 24:00Speaker 1: What?
- 24:00Speaker 5: I want to know exactly what's going on as an
- 24:03Speaker 5: executive right in a second.
- 24:06Speaker 6: Yeah, you're trying to juggle a bunch of calls. Usually
- 24:09Speaker 6: most of the time. I mean, it's possible that you've
- 24:13Speaker 6: some teams that have already done their deals at this point.
- 24:16Speaker 6: You know, it's get as it gets close to it,
- 24:17Speaker 6: you're you're kind of done and you're just looking to
- 24:19Speaker 6: be opportunistic at that point. But for if you're still
- 24:22Speaker 6: in it, which a lot of teams are sounds like
- 24:25Speaker 6: there seems to be a lot of recent activity, then yeah,
- 24:28Speaker 6: you have multiple calls, you're texting people, you're taking calls.
- 24:31Speaker 6: A lot of it happens over text at least, you know,
- 24:34Speaker 6: when I was in the game on the day, on
- 24:37Speaker 6: a day to day basis, that's that was what was happening,
- 24:39Speaker 6: which is a little bit easier to manage in time.
- 24:41Speaker 6: But at some point you get you know, well that's
- 24:43Speaker 6: three hours ahead of the deadline, you get to you know,
- 24:46Speaker 6: an hour before, you're definitely on the phone.
- 24:51Speaker 4: What about Adelie to the Red Sox. Is this something
- 24:54Speaker 4: that a three time All Star catcher on going to
- 24:57Speaker 4: a team that twenty seven days ago was looking to
- 25:03Speaker 4: sell and went on a streak. Is this roller coaster
- 25:06Speaker 4: season them buying on this season or buying on the
- 25:11Speaker 4: streak and saying, well, this is what we should have
- 25:12Speaker 4: been all year.
- 25:15Speaker 6: I think it's a little bit of Oh, it's buying
- 25:18Speaker 6: in the season. I think that they thought they were
- 25:20Speaker 6: better than this on paper, you know, I thought they'd
- 25:25Speaker 6: definitely be sellers a month ago, like you said, and
- 25:28Speaker 6: then they had this remarkable run. What is interesting to me,
- 25:31Speaker 6: and I like what they've done, and I like that
- 25:33Speaker 6: they're being aggressive. They're getting guys that also have at
- 25:37Speaker 6: least one more year control in the trade with me
- 25:40Speaker 6: obviously unfortunately got hurt right away. And then you know
- 25:44Speaker 6: Rushmand has control for next year too, So that is
- 25:48Speaker 6: by design, I'm assuming, and also is what justifies giving up.
- 25:52Speaker 6: It sounds like they're I haven't seen the whole package
- 25:54Speaker 6: if it's out there yet, but it sounds like they're
- 25:56Speaker 6: giving up their top, their second best prospect, their top
- 25:58Speaker 6: pitching prospect, and so you know that's that's an aggressive move,
- 26:04Speaker 6: but you like to see it because it's obviously they're
- 26:06Speaker 6: going from one of the worst catching spots in the
- 26:09Speaker 6: game to you know, potentially one of the top you know,
- 26:13Speaker 6: at least in the top third. Go from the bottom
- 26:14Speaker 6: third to the top third. That's that's that's real impact, Zach.
- 26:20Speaker 5: Does it change this fast for gms and for executives,
- 26:23Speaker 5: Cause again a month ago, everyone was like, oh the
- 26:25Speaker 5: Red Soars, Sonny Gray's gone, this Chapman's gone. They'd love
- 26:28Speaker 5: to trade their whole team, much like the Padres. Does
- 26:31Speaker 5: it happen this fast for teams where you go from
- 26:34Speaker 5: being sellers to a fifteen game winning streak and now
- 26:36Speaker 5: we're buying.
- 26:37Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean it's it's not that common, but it
- 26:40Speaker 6: feels like it's been happening a decent amount where you know,
- 26:43Speaker 6: I think we saw that with the Tigers in recent years. Right,
- 26:46Speaker 6: So they sold and then all of a sudden, it's like, Okay,
- 26:48Speaker 6: we're in it now. You know, I think the opposite
- 26:52Speaker 6: happens a lot more, and I unfortunately experienced this in
- 26:55Speaker 6: my one year with the Mets. Where you buy and
- 26:58Speaker 6: then you know, things go south and you're not you know,
- 27:02Speaker 6: you gave up resources and you're not making the playoffs.
- 27:05Speaker 6: So it can happen, and it can happen fast. I
- 27:08Speaker 6: don't think that's the norm, but it definitely has happened, all.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Right, Well, this Red Sox team made this move. No way,
- 27:18Speaker 4: do gms make the move based on the fact that
- 27:21Speaker 4: the Yankees also needed a catcher. Do gms look at
- 27:24Speaker 4: what other teams need and say, I want I kind
- 27:27Speaker 4: of need that too. They needed the catching position, But
- 27:31Speaker 4: I definitely want to make this move to block a
- 27:33Speaker 4: rival team.
- 27:36Speaker 6: It's not the driver of a decision, but it's part
- 27:39Speaker 6: of the decision because I mean, it really does affect
- 27:43Speaker 6: the math of it, all right, Like if that's how
- 27:45Speaker 6: people are thinking about things today, I mean, well, you're
- 27:47Speaker 6: taking away a potential gain from a from a rival
- 27:51Speaker 6: in your division. You know that could have an effect.
- 27:54Speaker 6: So but it's definitely small compared to put positioning your
- 27:59Speaker 6: team the best you can and for the amount of
- 28:01Speaker 6: years that you do control that player.
- 28:05Speaker 5: Hey, is that I think I'm I'm unmuted or not?
- 28:08Speaker 5: Can you hear me? Okay, we're muted for seconds. Scott
- 28:13Speaker 5: had to take a phone call, so we had to
- 28:14Speaker 5: mute him while he took his shirt off and his
- 28:16Speaker 5: microphone off. Hey, what is what's your stance on prospect hugging?
- 28:20Speaker 5: Because teams like the Orioles have been prospect hugging, accused
- 28:24Speaker 5: of prospect hugging. And then there's moves that that are
- 28:27Speaker 5: more like the peekrow Armstrong move that other gms have
- 28:30Speaker 5: made for players that are established and then that player
- 28:33Speaker 5: turns into it what could be a possible MVP. Right, So,
- 28:37Speaker 5: how did teams go about? Is it just GM to GM?
- 28:41Speaker 5: Is it team to team owner to owner? How does
- 28:43Speaker 5: that go?
- 28:45Speaker 6: I think you typically the teams I've been with, you
- 28:48Speaker 6: kind of decide who are your core prospects that are
- 28:52Speaker 6: either going to be a part of a sustainable run
- 28:56Speaker 6: for multiple years of your major league club. And you
- 28:59Speaker 6: decide and usually there's not that many of them. Most
- 29:02Speaker 6: of your prospects are going to be, you know, guys
- 29:05Speaker 6: that contribute a little bit here and there. They're not
- 29:07Speaker 6: going to necessarily be impact players on a championship club.
- 29:09Speaker 6: So you identify maybe you have two or three guys
- 29:12Speaker 6: like that, and then everyone else is available. In some
- 29:16Speaker 6: sort of deal. Now, you know, it's interesting to look back,
- 29:20Speaker 6: you know, you mentioned PCA and you look back at
- 29:23Speaker 6: that whole farm system at the time, and obviously he's
- 29:27Speaker 6: by far the best player to come from that farm system.
- 29:29Speaker 6: But at the time, you know, he wasn't a top
- 29:31Speaker 6: one hundred prospect. He was like fifth or six and
- 29:34Speaker 6: the Mets as a Mets prospect, not just in rankings,
- 29:38Speaker 6: but how I felt the industry was valuing him. So
- 29:41Speaker 6: but we could have traded anyone else, including guys that
- 29:44Speaker 6: we did think we're going to be a part of
- 29:46Speaker 6: that core. Alvarez is obviously a solid player, but Batty Mauricio,
- 29:51Speaker 6: like some of their top guys, just haven't panned out,
- 29:53Speaker 6: which I think is a good lesson to count, you know,
- 29:57Speaker 6: to say you shouldn't hug your prospects. But at the
- 30:00Speaker 6: same time, there's I think people are afraid to get burned,
- 30:05Speaker 6: and obviously I got burned in that trade, but that's
- 30:09Speaker 6: very rare. I mean, to get burned on a guy
- 30:11Speaker 6: that's you know, not considered an elite prospect is not
- 30:16Speaker 6: the norm. So it doesn't mean that all of a sudden,
- 30:19Speaker 6: you're you know, it seemed like the Mets the next
- 30:21Speaker 6: year were very cautious to do anything because of maybe
- 30:23Speaker 6: because of that, So I think prospect hugging is very dangerous.
- 30:27Speaker 6: I do think you identify your core guys, and obviously
- 30:31Speaker 6: you want to be right on them. It's still your
- 30:33Speaker 6: place in a bet. You're guessing right, You're making an
- 30:35Speaker 6: estimate of what's the likelihood that these are these core
- 30:38Speaker 6: guys and they're not untouchable, they're just you know, in
- 30:41Speaker 6: a different category, and then everyone else you're willing to
- 30:44Speaker 6: talk about at different levels.

- 31:46Speaker 4: Doesn't a league have that wrong?
- 31:48Speaker 3: Though?
- 31:48Speaker 4: Isn't the whole league plays everything by the numbers, and well,
- 31:51Speaker 4: this is the percentage, the percentage chances you're not getting
- 31:55Speaker 4: rid of PCA, you're not getting rid of your Don
- 31:58Speaker 4: Alvarez Liz are the Those are the abnormalities. But isn't
- 32:02Speaker 4: the league making the decisions based on those? Oh man,
- 32:07Speaker 4: I don't want to be that guy that gets rid
- 32:08Speaker 4: of that guy and then they lose their chance to
- 32:10Speaker 4: do what the entire league is meant to do and
- 32:14Speaker 4: win a World Series.
- 32:16Speaker 6: I'd say that the number of there's more risk averse
- 32:20Speaker 6: gms than there was twenty plus years ago when I started.
- 32:24Speaker 6: And I think part of that is what you mentioned
- 32:27Speaker 6: like having, whether it's a player in free agency and
- 32:30Speaker 6: you have those anchor contracts on your resume, that you
- 32:34Speaker 6: gave out a bad deal because you were the highest
- 32:36Speaker 6: bidder in a mar in a free agent market for
- 32:38Speaker 6: a big, big time player, or the same thing with
- 32:40Speaker 6: the trade you trade a guy that burns you, which
- 32:43Speaker 6: is less often the case, but it does happen. Some
- 32:48Speaker 6: people could get paralyzed by that fear. They don't want
- 32:50Speaker 6: to look bad. I mean, it's a it's an interesting
- 32:53Speaker 6: dynamic that gms. You know, they only typically have four
- 32:56Speaker 6: or five year contracts, so some of them maybe looking
- 33:00Speaker 6: at shorter windows. But there is a lot of fear
- 33:02Speaker 6: and there can be a lot of paralysis around making
- 33:04Speaker 6: a mistake. But you know, I look at gms who
- 33:08Speaker 6: are going to be in the Hall of Fame someday,
- 33:09Speaker 6: the theo Epstein's, Dave Dombrowski's who I've worked for, both
- 33:12Speaker 6: of those guys, and you know they have those anchor contracts.
- 33:17Speaker 6: They probably they have some bad trades, it's not something
- 33:20Speaker 6: that stopped them from doing what they were what their
- 33:24Speaker 6: goal was, which was to build a winning team. So
- 33:27Speaker 6: you can't get caught up in that you can't be
- 33:29Speaker 6: paralyzed by fear.
- 33:32Speaker 5: Zach, how do you know when it's your year to
- 33:34Speaker 5: go for it? Like I just keep asking the Brewers
- 33:37Speaker 5: question because I think this is a year where they
- 33:39Speaker 5: could really go for it in the school bol trade.
- 33:41Speaker 5: Now they most still might make some moves, But how
- 33:44Speaker 5: do you know if it's your year to say, chips
- 33:46Speaker 5: are going in, we're really going to push instead of saying, oh, well,
- 33:49Speaker 5: we're consistently good, we make the playoffs. We don't win
- 33:52Speaker 5: a lot of our games in the playoffs, but hey fans,
- 33:54Speaker 5: we make the postseason every year.
- 33:58Speaker 6: Yeah, it's tough. I mean I do think we see.
- 34:01Speaker 6: You know, Milwaukee's had a lot of success in terms
- 34:03Speaker 6: of being good on a low pay roll every year
- 34:07Speaker 6: making it to the postseason a lot. Same thing with
- 34:09Speaker 6: Cleveland and Tampa. Those teams they do a great job.
- 34:12Speaker 6: But we often see the teams that win the championship
- 34:15Speaker 6: have more kind of star players, impact players. So when
- 34:20Speaker 6: you start shrinking rosters and rotations and things like that,
- 34:24Speaker 6: that it starts to maybe that's why some of those
- 34:26Speaker 6: teams haven't won, although some of them have gotten pretty far,
- 34:30Speaker 6: so it's hard to say, but yeah, and to read
- 34:33Speaker 6: when it's time. I mean, I think you always have
- 34:36Speaker 6: to take advantage of the opportunities you have to win.
- 34:39Speaker 6: I mean, that's what this is about, right, It's winning
- 34:41Speaker 6: a championship. We don't get trophies for having the best
- 34:44Speaker 6: farm system in baseball. It's really about winning now. You
- 34:48Speaker 6: want to balance the short and long term, So it's
- 34:50Speaker 6: winning now in in the future. And I think sometimes teams,
- 34:54Speaker 6: and maybe with small payrolls, it makes sense to do this,
- 34:56Speaker 6: but sometimes teams are very hesitant to go all in.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Zach, Is that true what you just said. It's not
- 35:03Speaker 4: about getting trophies for the best farm system, and it's
- 35:06Speaker 4: about winning, Like if we pulled every GM all thirty Okay, okay,
- 35:11Speaker 4: it should be What do you think the percentage is
- 35:14Speaker 4: that believe and agree with your statement?
- 35:18Speaker 6: I think most agree intellectually. It's whether they can actually
- 35:24Speaker 6: whether they behave that way is a different question. Right,
- 35:28Speaker 6: So I think you can say, oh no, that makes sense.
- 35:30Speaker 6: Obviously it's about winning. We want to win a championship.
- 35:32Speaker 6: But I've been surprised, you know, I've Obviously I worked
- 35:37Speaker 6: with the Red Sox most of my career. I got
- 35:40Speaker 6: some exposure to some other front offices. Through consulting work
- 35:42Speaker 6: I've been doing over the last five years and just
- 35:45Speaker 6: a lot of conversations I have with gms and presidents
- 35:48Speaker 6: and baseball ops. I've been surprised that it doesn't seem
- 35:54Speaker 6: like it's more about winning, you know, And I think
- 35:56Speaker 6: growing up in the Boston organization and being a big
- 35:58Speaker 6: part of that, and obviously we won four times, which
- 36:01Speaker 6: is outstanding there. I don't, you know, we had this
- 36:04Speaker 6: hunger for that night and that was what we talked
- 36:06Speaker 6: about a lot, and I just don't hear that from
- 36:09Speaker 6: a lot of people. It's almost like the old kind
- 36:13Speaker 6: of moneyball. It's a crapshoot. Thing has has definitely been
- 36:17Speaker 6: more accepted by maybe it's owners, maybe it's gms, but
- 36:22Speaker 6: I feel like they the sense is that it's okay
- 36:24Speaker 6: to just let's just get there and see what happens.
- 36:27Speaker 6: And maybe maybe that's right. I don't think so. I
- 36:30Speaker 6: think you want to try to put your best foot
- 36:32Speaker 6: forward when you have those opportunities, because again, that's what
- 36:35Speaker 6: it's all about.
- 36:37Speaker 5: Hi, Jack. Last thing for me, how do you what's
- 36:39Speaker 5: the process when a trade is done? Do you shase
- 36:41Speaker 5: you know, obviously don't shake hands because it's through a phone.
- 36:44Speaker 5: Do you call the league right away and say, hey,
- 36:46Speaker 5: we have this deal done. They have to prove it.
- 36:48Speaker 5: What's the last piece because all we hear about is
- 36:50Speaker 5: this trade of this trade, this trade, but we never
- 36:52Speaker 5: hear about what. I want to know what the last
- 36:54Speaker 5: thing that happens before the players find out. Sometimes players
- 36:57Speaker 5: find out before.
- 36:59Speaker 6: Yeah, well you know you have Once you reach an
- 37:01Speaker 6: agreement with the other GM, you go through the it's
- 37:03Speaker 6: always pending medical process, right, so you review the medical
- 37:06Speaker 6: files of the players involved. The other teams. Trainers will
- 37:08Speaker 6: get involved reviewing those finals. Once they're sign off on those,
- 37:12Speaker 6: then yeah, you're submitting it into MLB's computer system to
- 37:17Speaker 6: get approval by the Commissioner's office, which they do on
- 37:19Speaker 6: a day like this, They do really quickly. And then
- 37:22Speaker 6: typically you know you've you've given a heads up to
- 37:24Speaker 6: your media relations department to drop a press release. Sometimes
- 37:27Speaker 6: maybe you wait till after the deadline, depends on the timing,
- 37:31Speaker 6: but first you've talked to the players before you do
- 37:33Speaker 6: put out the press release, so they start working on that.
- 37:36Speaker 6: But then once you have medical approval is typically when
- 37:39Speaker 6: you call and get in touch with the players that
- 37:41Speaker 6: are involved in the trade, to tell them that they've
- 37:43Speaker 6: been traded, to thank them, whatever it may be that
- 37:45Speaker 6: your messaging is to them, and then you're ready to
- 37:48Speaker 6: go announce it.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Zach, great insight. As always, we love having you on.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Thanks for joining us on the big trade deadline day too.
- 37:56Speaker 2: And I've plug different things throughout, but one good one
- 37:59Speaker 2: here that you put together under review sports business newsletter
- 38:03Speaker 2: just recently launched, right, so if everyone can check that out,
- 38:06Speaker 2: where can they find it?
- 38:08Speaker 6: It's on substack, so you can go to Zach scottsports
- 38:11Speaker 6: dot substack dot com and find it. Yeah, I just
- 38:13Speaker 6: launched it last week. I'll basically be breaking down decisions
- 38:17Speaker 6: you can't take back and what the process should be
- 38:20Speaker 6: before you make those decisions.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Nice.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Okay, So some of what we talked about here, and
- 38:24Speaker 2: of course a ton more to read there on his substack.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Thanks Scott or thanks.
- 38:28Speaker 6: Zach, thanks for having me guys.
- 38:31Speaker 2: This is that time of year, aj It is Baseball's
- 38:34Speaker 2: time to shine, and it is sea Geek's time to
- 38:38Speaker 2: shine with MLB tickets and finding the best pricing seating
- 38:43Speaker 2: and games that are even sold out available on sea Geek.
- 38:47Speaker 5: Absolutely if you want to go to the biggest matchups
- 38:50Speaker 5: coming up. We have Yankees Cubs coming up. Where's Yankees
- 38:52Speaker 5: red Sox? That means stuff. Again, there's some big moments
- 38:55Speaker 5: that are coming up here in the as the penachases.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Really heat up.
- 38:59Speaker 5: Go to se find those green tickets with the best
- 39:01Speaker 5: deals and get yourself out to an MLB game.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and they're straightforward with you.

- 39:09Speaker 2: ticket that they don't feel is your best.

- 39:27Speaker 2: click the link in the description to download the app
- 39:29Speaker 2: and have the code automatically added to your account so
- 39:31Speaker 2: you can use it later. Sounds like some music you
- 39:43Speaker 2: might hear in Texas for Shake It Up. Our segment
- 39:46Speaker 2: on a team that's trying to move and shake. That's
- 39:49Speaker 2: the Rangers suddenly very open for business. It appears that
- 39:53Speaker 2: they at least were trying to get word on the
- 39:56Speaker 2: industry's take for Jacob de Gram.
- 39:58Speaker 1: He is expensive but he is very good when he's
- 40:00Speaker 1: on the mound.
- 40:01Speaker 2: And Ken Rosenthal reported that the Rangers spoke with Jacob
- 40:05Speaker 2: de Gram about waving his new trade class. The Graham said, no,
- 40:11Speaker 2: I'm saying here, shocker. I mean, and they're going to
- 40:16Speaker 2: other players though now, according to Ken's report, that includes
- 40:21Speaker 2: Corey Seeger and Nathany Baldi.
- 40:22Speaker 1: These are some big names that can move.
- 40:24Speaker 5: That can help you too.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Yeah, but not the back seekers.
- 40:26Speaker 5: Not back though yet? Is he?
- 40:28Speaker 1: He saw three or four else and snow, I thought
- 40:32Speaker 1: he just came back.
- 40:32Speaker 5: Did last week?
- 40:35Speaker 1: I believe I saw him crats and you guys checking, Yeah,
- 40:42Speaker 1: he's back. It was back, Okay, he was back.
- 40:44Speaker 5: So he's back, so that's cool. But Evan Grant has
- 40:47Speaker 5: told me since I saw him last weekend a week
- 40:50Speaker 5: ago Saturday, that he thought they were going to sell then,
- 40:53Speaker 5: and they were in first place then.
- 40:54Speaker 1: But you can't sell those guys without their permission, any
- 40:56Speaker 1: of them. No, no, some of them.
- 40:58Speaker 2: I mean, you can tell Josh Smith, you can sell
- 41:01Speaker 2: Jock Peterson.
- 41:03Speaker 5: Josh Smith already gone.
- 41:04Speaker 1: No, I know. That's why I'm saying Josh Smith gone,
- 41:06Speaker 1: Jack Peterson.
- 41:07Speaker 5: It's amazing because they were the first place, so we
- 41:09Speaker 5: could go, let's one week ago they were in first place,
- 41:13Speaker 5: and they were, they were in front of the Mariners,
- 41:15Speaker 5: and now they're two games back in the lost column
- 41:18Speaker 5: to the Astros, who was a flawed team also, And
- 41:21Speaker 5: you're gonna.
- 41:21Speaker 2: Sell this because bad week, one bad week, basically, that's
- 41:26Speaker 2: really that's really punishment.
- 41:28Speaker 5: I don't know. It seems like a lot, but.
- 41:31Speaker 1: I think there's something going on there, can I.
- 41:33Speaker 5: Yeah, tell me, tell me your tell me your conspiracy theory.
- 41:37Speaker 2: That the Rangers owner cut like forty million dollars this
- 41:40Speaker 2: past offseason. I want to say he's on one of
- 41:42Speaker 2: those committees with the CBA battle and you know, he
- 41:44Speaker 2: might be one of those guys who's like, let's let's
- 41:46Speaker 2: clear payroll. This is probably not the year for us.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Kratz has given me the look he gives me when
- 41:51Speaker 2: I sound wrong.
- 41:52Speaker 4: What No, that wasn't that was? That was it was
- 41:55Speaker 4: a conspiracy theory. I'm just trying to connect the dots.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Yeah, because they lost all.
- 42:02Speaker 5: Their money in the RSN deal. I know that they
- 42:03Speaker 5: lost a ton of money in the RSN deal. And
- 42:05Speaker 5: they lost a bunch of money because and then they've
- 42:08Speaker 5: had problems like people trying to find the games and
- 42:10Speaker 5: this and that. So they have definitely gone down in
- 42:12Speaker 5: revenue because of that. The one team that has not
- 42:15Speaker 5: been affected by this is the Dodgers because they have
- 42:19Speaker 5: that deal that they signed years ago that MLB okayed
- 42:22Speaker 5: where they just get all this money and it's like
- 42:24Speaker 5: not taxable and they can't ever lose it, and that's
- 42:27Speaker 5: why they they have the ability to do what they do.
- 42:29Speaker 5: But I don't know this, this surprised me for a
- 42:33Speaker 5: Rangers team that won a World Series not that long ago.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Okay, so Ray Davis is the owner of the Rangers.
- 42:38Speaker 2: He's on the Major League Baseball Labor Policy Committee. The
- 42:43Speaker 2: committee is currently headed by Dick Monfort, the owner of
- 42:46Speaker 2: the Rockies.
- 42:48Speaker 4: Cup.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Yes, other notables are Jerry Reinsdorf, and then they get
- 42:52Speaker 2: the one guy who's like, hey, let's not skip a season.
- 42:55Speaker 2: And that's how sign Runner is probably on the opposite
- 42:57Speaker 2: side of those guys to try and balance it.
- 42:58Speaker 1: But it's kind of three on one.
- 43:00Speaker 2: But anyway, I'm just saying Ray Davis is in on
- 43:02Speaker 2: the deeper part of the conversations. It's like taking all
- 43:05Speaker 2: of the players and the player association and that subcommittee
- 43:08Speaker 2: that really gets all of the word and is in
- 43:10Speaker 2: on the meetings. So just throwing it out there that
- 43:12Speaker 2: if you're a Rangers team that's on the bubble Kratz,
- 43:14Speaker 2: and you just cleared a ton of money this past offseason,
- 43:17Speaker 2: you start asking Corey Seeger, Hey, you've got like one
- 43:20Speaker 2: hundred and fifty million bucks left, Jacob de Grom tons
- 43:22Speaker 2: of money left on his deal, Nathan y Valdi getting
- 43:25Speaker 2: paid a lot this year and still next year. Hey,
- 43:28Speaker 2: any of you guys want to get out of here,
- 43:30Speaker 2: you'll have to cover the money because there's no state
- 43:33Speaker 2: income tax in Texas. If you trade them to a
- 43:34Speaker 2: team that has heavy state income tax, you usually have
- 43:37Speaker 2: to give them something on a new trade class. But
- 43:40Speaker 2: the news here Kratz, was that the Rangers are at
- 43:43Speaker 2: least listening on some of their top players. And they
- 43:47Speaker 2: tried with one so far and he said, no, I'm good,
- 43:50Speaker 2: I'm staying in Texas.
- 43:51Speaker 1: And that's Jacob de Grom.
- 43:54Speaker 4: So if you're a Rangers fan, do you sit there
- 43:56Speaker 4: and go, good, I'm glad we could get rid of
- 43:57Speaker 4: that guy, because they're going to take the money and
- 44:01Speaker 4: allocate it to something else. Like this is just a
- 44:06Speaker 4: This is a quiet like.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Us the money dump, That's what I mean.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Dude, They're not gonna if they trade one of these
- 44:15Speaker 2: guys away and he's making whatever, thirty million dollars, so
- 44:18Speaker 2: most of them are making a ton of three names
- 44:19Speaker 2: that we're talking about, right. Even more, you're not gonna
- 44:22Speaker 2: take the pro rated portion of that. Let's say it's
- 44:24Speaker 2: twelve or whatever, and so oh, we found someone else
- 44:26Speaker 2: to fill that money with me. You might do that
- 44:28Speaker 2: in the off season, or you might do that in
- 44:29Speaker 2: the off seasons. But yeah, no, this is this is
- 44:32Speaker 2: just clearing money and getting prospects for guys that can
- 44:36Speaker 2: help another team. It's just, like AJ said, a little
- 44:39Speaker 2: bit strange when you take such a turn so quickly.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Who is the reliever that, oh, Chase sil Seth and
- 44:47Speaker 2: O Hopy is catching depth, right, but sil Seth and
- 44:51Speaker 2: I know he's got team control the guy. You're like, oh, okay,
- 44:54Speaker 2: the Rangers are gonna at least do some light buying here,
- 44:56Speaker 2: and they've done that the last couple trade deadlines. All
- 44:59Speaker 2: of a sudden, it's seems like they're taking a turn. Yes, yes, okay.
- 45:07Speaker 4: Weird, just weird, especially when especially when you're rumbling a
- 45:11Speaker 4: week ago when they were in the first place, that
- 45:14Speaker 4: there's a chance they sell pieces off like that just
- 45:17Speaker 4: seems uncompetitive to me.
- 45:21Speaker 2: Go the other end. Now, let's talk about the San
- 45:24Speaker 2: Diego Padres bubble team.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Last couple of weeks.
- 45:29Speaker 5: They got hot as all held the last two weeks.
- 45:32Speaker 5: So they're hitting, and AJ Preller is AJ Preller never
- 45:35Speaker 5: wants to sell. AJ Preller always wants to buy. And
- 45:38Speaker 5: you know why he can do it because they get
- 45:39Speaker 5: forty thousand plus a game. And you know who the
- 45:42Speaker 5: last team to beat the Dodgers in the playoffs.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Was the Padres.
- 45:45Speaker 5: I think it was the Padres. Maybe it wasn't, but
- 45:47Speaker 5: I thought it was.
- 45:47Speaker 7: No.
- 45:48Speaker 5: Is that twenty two or twenty.
- 45:49Speaker 2: No that Diamondbacks actually and two twenty two Padres should
- 45:54Speaker 2: have beat him. In twenty four they were distracted from
- 45:57Speaker 2: twenty four and couldn't hit for a couple of days.
- 45:59Speaker 5: But twenty two they beat him. In twenty four four
- 46:03Speaker 5: they should have had him, That's what I just said.
- 46:05Speaker 5: Twenty four they had him, and then they let them.
- 46:07Speaker 5: They didn't score a run. They forgot, they went blind
- 46:09Speaker 5: and forgot how to hit.
- 46:10Speaker 1: For a couple of days.
- 46:11Speaker 2: So but now they have Robbie Ray, who's pitching really
- 46:15Speaker 2: well lately and could pitch a playoff game for you.
- 46:18Speaker 2: At the same time, it does sound like they've still
- 46:21Speaker 2: been listening.
- 46:22Speaker 1: On Mason Miller. The reports keep coming. I agree. I
- 46:27Speaker 1: don't think so.
- 46:28Speaker 5: Preller loves Mason Miller way too much to make a
- 46:31Speaker 5: move right now. For him, Coller wants to win now.
- 46:34Speaker 5: In the offseason. If someone came to the Preller and said, hey,
- 46:36Speaker 5: we'll give you X, Y and Z, that was something
- 46:39Speaker 5: he would do, but not right now. He's too competitive.
- 46:41Speaker 2: I'm going to give you one scenario where it might
- 46:43Speaker 2: have made sense, because this just came out. Ryan Divish
- 46:46Speaker 2: Seattle Times covers the ms. He said the Mariners checked
- 46:49Speaker 2: in on Mason Miller. The Padres asked four top prospect
- 46:53Speaker 2: Kate Kate Anderson's ready now. So I know that Mason
- 46:56Speaker 2: Miller's best closure in the game, but Kate Anderson could
- 46:58Speaker 2: slide into a rotation and be a big time pitcher
- 47:01Speaker 2: from the jump if the stuff goes right to the
- 47:04Speaker 2: big leagues like this, I know it's not happening, but
- 47:05Speaker 2: I'm saying, you don't think the Padres would do that.
- 47:09Speaker 2: A trade that if the Mariners, I understand what I'm saying.
- 47:12Speaker 2: That's a scenario where you could see the Padres stealing him.
- 47:16Speaker 2: The Mariners aren't going to do that because Kate Anderson
- 47:18Speaker 2: could be in the rotation in five seconds
