- 0:00We've come to feast on His Word and so please meet me in your
- 0:03Bibles in Revelation Chapter 9. Revelation Chapter 9.
- 0:14It could be said that an effective cheat teacher knows
- 0:18and recognizes when repetition is necessary in order to firmly
- 0:22establish truths in the minds of learners.
- 0:26And I say that because it could be that you've realized that
- 0:30some of these introductions in our study of revelation are
- 0:33similar. And I'm here to tell you that's
- 0:34intentional because the aim in that is after hearing over and
- 0:40over again the structure of this book, it would be so ingrained
- 0:44in your memory as you hear about the layout and the overarching
- 0:48theme so that it would become almost second nature.
- 0:52With that being said, we are still examining God's final
- 0:56program of judgement for the last days and we are looking at
- 1:013 Series of judgements, each consisting of seven acts, 7
- 1:07events, and we've already completed the first set.
- 1:11We already looked at the seal judgements.
- 1:15The scroll has been completely opened by the hands of Christ,
- 1:19and now we find ourselves in the midst of the trumpet judgements.
- 1:25And if you were here 2 weeks ago, you recall that we looked
- 1:28at what happened after the four trumpets were sounded, and we
- 1:34are ready to see the final three.
- 1:36But before John is given insight into the last three trumpet
- 1:42blasts, there is a strange and interesting interruption.
- 1:47It's in the last verse of chapter 8.
- 1:50Look at Revelation 813 for a moment.
- 1:54Then I looked and I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice
- 1:59as it flew directly overhead. Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell
- 2:05on the earth at the blast of the other trumpets the three angels
- 2:10are about to blow. You know this well.
- 2:15Woes are common expressions in the Scriptures to represent it,
- 2:19to signify and call out condemnation or judgement.
- 2:23And double woes are not uncommon either.
- 2:27When you see whoa whoa, it's because there is an emphasis.
- 2:32But a triple woe like what we find here in this verse is rare.
- 2:38Now, we might think the message of this verse is that there is
- 2:40an extreme emphasis, but in actuality, its main purpose is
- 2:46to assign each woe to each of the remaining trumpet blasts.
- 2:52That's what we're going to find in this new chapter.
- 2:54A woe for the last three trumpets.
- 3:00Now here's the question that came to mind immediately.
- 3:03Why do the last three trumpets receive this ominous recognition
- 3:08instead of the first four? And the answer is very clear
- 3:12when you compare both. You see, when we looked at the
- 3:151st 4 trumpets, we saw that they triggered devastation upon
- 3:21nature. 1/3 of this part of the earth, 1/3 of the rivers, 1/3 of
- 3:27this. It was all about the Earth, the
- 3:29planet. Now, as we come to the last
- 3:32three trumpet alarms, we're going to see that they will set
- 3:36into motion judgement and torment against people directly.
- 3:43Humans will now be targeted not indirectly, but directly.
- 3:49So this is very sobering. And these events, particularly
- 3:53set off by the 5th trumpet, are so severe that they might be
- 3:57understood as hell on earth. Actually, an appropriate title
- 4:02for this passage of Scripture that we're about to read is Five
- 4:07Months of Hell. And I'm sure you're going to see
- 4:11it as we read Revelation 9, verse one, down to verse 6.
- 4:15Let's do that together. And the 5th Angel blew his
- 4:20trumpet, and I saw a * falling from heaven to earth.
- 4:24And he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.
- 4:28He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the
- 4:31shaft rose smoke, like the smoke of a great furnace, And the sun
- 4:36and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft.
- 4:40Then from the smoke came locust on the earth, and they were
- 4:43given power like the power of scorpions of the earth.
- 4:47They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green
- 4:50plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have the
- 4:55seal of God on their foreheads. They were allowed to torment
- 4:59them for five months, but not to kill them.
- 5:02And their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it
- 5:06stings someone. And in no day in those days,
- 5:09people will seek death and will not find it.
- 5:12They will long to die, but death will flee from them.
- 5:18Father, we realize immediately that we need your wisdom.
- 5:21And Lord, I am very aware that I need your help in delivering
- 5:25this. Every preacher, oh God, that is
- 5:28honest, recognizes the need of your help.
- 5:32And Lord, every listener who understands their knee will say,
- 5:35Open my heart, help me to hear what you have to say.
- 5:39So Lord, just take over and have your way in the service.
- 5:42Lord, especially now as we unpack your word, we give you
- 5:45glory for your help. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
- 5:51There are many ways that one can approach this nightmarish scene.
- 5:54So many details, so many mysteries, so many questions.
- 6:00But as I was reading over this passage over and over again
- 6:03throughout this past week, certain words began to surface,
- 6:08Certain words began to be highlighted.
- 6:11And I want to show you what I mean.
- 6:12Look back at verse one in the second part.
- 6:16And he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.
- 6:22Look at the second part of verse 3.
- 6:25And they were given power, like the power of scorpions of the
- 6:30earth. Look at verse four.
- 6:32In the beginning they were told not to harm the grass of the
- 6:37earth or any green plant or any tree.
- 6:40Finally, look at verse 5. They were allowed to torment
- 6:45them for five months. It is so easy to get caught up
- 6:50by this horrific set of details and this ghastly imagery, but
- 6:57woven through it all is the language of God's sovereignty.
- 7:01Do you see it? I see it.
- 7:05Revelation teaches us many things, but one of the things
- 7:08that it continually reaffirms is the extent of God's authority
- 7:14both in the realm that we see and the one that we cannot
- 7:16perceive. And what we have here before us
- 7:20is a reminder that the Lord's governance extends to realities
- 7:24that we often forget He has mastery over.
- 7:29And so as you and I approach this at face value, reading it
- 7:32may be terrifying. It may cause us to be curious.
- 7:36But when you meditate on it, I trust that you will be
- 7:40strengthened in your faith and who God is and what He is
- 7:42capable of. I have one goal today before we
- 7:46break bread in reading and expounding on these verses.
- 7:48Just one simple mission that you and I would see just how big God
- 7:52is the guy that you love, the guy that you sing to, the guy
- 7:57that you trust in for your daily needs.
- 7:59I want to show you today through this passage that He is
- 8:01incredibly majestic. There is not one corner of the
- 8:06universe that he does not have jurisdiction over.
- 8:10He is so strong. He is so powerful, He is so
- 8:15mighty. And we get a snapshot of it
- 8:17right here. And so today we're going to look
- 8:20at 3 domains that our God has authority over, 3 realities that
- 8:27he governs that we often miss or don't really give him credit for
- 8:31or recognize his presence in three of them.
- 8:35And the first one is this God's sovereignty over the underworld.
- 8:41God's sovereignty over the underworld.
- 8:43Look back here again at verse one and verse 2.
- 8:45When this 5th Angel blew his trumpet, John saw something
- 8:49immediately, a star. He says I saw a * falling from
- 8:53heaven to the earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of
- 8:56the bottomless pit. We've seen stars falling in our
- 8:58study of revelation, have we not?
- 9:01We remember during the seal judgements, and particularly the
- 9:046th one, how there were many stars that had fallen as a fig
- 9:09tree would dispense figs when it is shaken.
- 9:12And not too long ago in the trumpet judgments, we saw on the
- 9:143rd trumpet that there was a great star that fell from
- 9:17heaven, and it fell on 1/3 of the rivers and springs of water.
- 9:20And so now we come to this text and we almost anticipate that
- 9:22this is just another cosmic disturbance.
- 9:25But we quickly learned that this is no ordinary star.
- 9:29In fact, this is not a real star.
- 9:30This is not a literal mass from the sky falling into the earth.
- 9:35It's a person and that's not us making this interpretation on
- 9:42our own. John tells us, look at the
- 9:44language. It has personal like qualities.
- 9:47He started, he saw a * falling from the heaven to earth and he,
- 9:50he, oh, he, he was given what a responsibility.
- 9:55He was given the key and he was called to action.
- 9:58He was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.
- 10:02So what we have here is a person that fell from heaven.
- 10:07Now we know that this person is not a human.
- 10:10This person is from another realm, from a heavenly realm
- 10:13because it fell again from heaven.
- 10:15Now here's what's interesting. We see in the scriptures that
- 10:19angels are referred to more than once as what stars, especially
- 10:24in Job 38 verse 7. So now the question follows.
- 10:30This is an Angel, an angelic being that fell from heaven?
- 10:34Is it a good Angel? Is it a bad Angel?
- 10:38Is it the chief of demonic angels?
- 10:40Is it Satan? Because Satan, we're told in
- 10:42more than one place in the Bible, fell from heaven?
- 10:46Well, some would say it has to be a good Angel because no way
- 10:50would the Lord give a key to a bad Angel to open up this shaft
- 10:55to a bottomless pit. Other would say, no, it has to
- 10:58be a bad Angel. It has to be a fallen Angel
- 11:00because he's fallen. Let's not spend our energy here.
- 11:06This is the point that I want to drive into our hearts.
- 11:08This Angel was given a key by God for a day.
- 11:14He's borrowing one of God's keys, and this key opens the
- 11:19door to what is known as the bottomless pit.
- 11:25Bottomless pit. This is important in the Book of
- 11:29Revelation, in all the New Testament, the bottomless pit in
- 11:33the original word, it's actually one word.
- 11:35It's the word where we get abyss from.
- 11:39It appears a total of nine times in the New Testament, seven of
- 11:42those nine times. Where do you think Revelation?
- 11:46And when you collect all the references to this abyss, this
- 11:49bottomless pit, you learn what its function is.
- 11:53It represents a deep, dark, very real spiritual prison house for
- 12:00fallen angels. Do you remember what happened
- 12:05when Jesus arrived to the Gadarenes and there was a very
- 12:09tormented soul who is filled with thousands of demons in
- 12:14Christ unusually asked the name of this demon and here's a
- 12:18reference for you in Luke 8 verse 30.
- 12:21I'll read it. Jesus then asked him what is
- 12:25your name? And he said legion, for many
- 12:28demons had entered him, verse 31.
- 12:32And they begged him not to command them to depart into the
- 12:36abyss. Whatever you do, son of God, do
- 12:43not bring us to the abyss. Scripture teaches us that from
- 12:50the time of the fall, God has assigned certain demonic beings
- 12:55to a gloomy darkness, to be chained everlastingly until the
- 13:00final judgment and their verdict is made.
- 13:03Peter shares us in second Peter. Jude shares us in his short
- 13:06epistle. There are actual demonic beings
- 13:11who are in this very moment apprehended, incarcerated, and
- 13:16kept from freely roaming on the earth.
- 13:19Now, there's a whole other category of demons who have been
- 13:22running loose on this earth since the beginning of time.
- 13:25But there's a whole different group of fallen angels that have
- 13:30not seen the light of day that have been kept and will be kept
- 13:36until that final day except for what we find here.
- 13:39Do you understand what's happening here?
- 13:43God is permitting an Angel to open the door for the worst of
- 13:50the worst demons, for the vilest spiritual criminals who have
- 13:58harassed humanity in unspeakable ways, to freely roam on the
- 14:03earth and do as they please, to an extent for almost half a
- 14:08year. This is terrifying and
- 14:13rightfully so, and this background shows us here that
- 14:18God is doing this as an act of judgement.
- 14:24God is doing this because He wants to let them be His agents
- 14:30of chastisement and judgement. Notice the description of the
- 14:35smoke in verse 2. Can you see it with me?
- 14:38It says here. Then in verse 2 he opened the
- 14:40shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like
- 14:43the smoke of a great furnace. That expression smoke arising
- 14:49like the smoke of a great furnace in relation to the
- 14:52judgement of people, only appears in one other place in
- 14:55all of the Bible. Can anybody guess where Sodom
- 14:58and Gomorrah, after Sodom and Gomorrah, experience God's
- 15:03wrath, fire and brimson falling from heaven.
- 15:06We're told there that Abraham looked upon the land and he saw
- 15:09smoke arising like the smoke of a furnace.
- 15:14And that's almost repeated here word for word.
- 15:16Why? It foreshadows something
- 15:18devastating. It shows here that there is
- 15:21going to be a severe manifestation of God's holy
- 15:25justice like the world has never really seen.
- 15:30And as you look at this, you think to yourself, is there any
- 15:35hope? I mean, what?
- 15:36What do you make of this? Well, again, read between the
- 15:40lines. Don't focus on the demons.
- 15:43Focus on the one who has authority over the underworld.
- 15:47He's able to keep them back, and He's able to loosen them.
- 15:51And I want you to see what's going to happen upon Christ's
- 15:54return at the end of Revelation. Go to chapter 20 Revelation and
- 15:58notice that immediately after Christ returns bodily and places
- 16:02his feet on the Mount of Olives, and he deals with the enemies of
- 16:06God's people. 01 of his first priorities before he establishes
- 16:10his millennial reign is what you see in Revelation 20 verse 2.
- 16:15And he sees the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil
- 16:20and Satan, and bound him for 1000 years, and threw him into
- 16:26the what, Pitt the abyss, the very same word, and shut it and
- 16:32sealed it over him so that he might not deceive the nation's
- 16:35any longer until the 1000 years were ended.
- 16:39After that, he must be released for a little while.
- 16:44There's a day coming when the chief of demons, the Prince of
- 16:48all that is dark and wicked, the head of all demonic operations,
- 16:53will be arrested. There's a warrant for his arrest
- 16:56and he will be imprisoned for a literal 1000 years before the
- 17:01new heavens and the new earth commences.
- 17:04This world is going to experience a length of time free
- 17:08from any satanic temptation, devilish oppression, possession,
- 17:16and even deception. That day is coming.
- 17:20What I just read to you is not a description of heaven because at
- 17:24the end of the verses we just read, it says he's going to be
- 17:26released again. This is speaking about when
- 17:29Jesus returns, He is going to set up his reign.
- 17:33And one of the glories of his physical reign on the earth is
- 17:36he's going to take Satan and all his minions and launch them into
- 17:39the pit for 1000 years. And the redeemed and even those
- 17:43who remain who are unbelievers who will live in that reign are
- 17:46going to know a world that has never been without demonic
- 17:52presence. Now here's why this is
- 17:55important. Those who don't believe that
- 17:58this is all future and that this is literal have to interpret
- 18:02this in another way. So many who don't hold to the
- 18:05futurist interpretation of the Book of Revelation will say what
- 18:08we just read there about the 1000 years and Satan being put
- 18:10into a pit. That's all figurative and it's
- 18:13speaking about today. It's speaking about how Satan
- 18:17has been bound. 1000 years is just a symbolic number.
- 18:21Satan has been bound since Jesus Christ died on the cross.
- 18:26To which I respond, how is he doing all of this while bound?
- 18:31All this chaos, all the increase of evil, This is him bound.
- 18:34I don't want to see what he's like when he's set free.
- 18:38So this is this is a dilemma. You either take all this again
- 18:42spiritually, or you acknowledge that there is a glorious future
- 18:45ahead, not just for the Church, but the entire world as it sits
- 18:49under the governance of the precious Prince of Peace, Jesus
- 18:52Christ of Nazareth. But he has control over that pit
- 18:56now and he has a divine purpose behind it.
- 19:00So the first thing I want you to understand is hell, which is
- 19:04another thing I don't want to confuse you.
- 19:05This underworld, this abyss is not ruled by Satan.
- 19:11I know, I know. People get the theology from
- 19:13cartoons where Satan sits on this throne and he's in hell and
- 19:16he can belch out as many demons as he wants.
- 19:20This Angel was given a key from God to let loose, and God has
- 19:25many keys, as we're going to find out.
- 19:27The second thing that we see sovereignty at play here at work
- 19:30here is very close to the first. God's sovereignty over demons,
- 19:33Not just the place, but these persons like the star we read
- 19:39about. What locus?
- 19:41There are no ordinary locusts. They are locusts because again,
- 19:47in the Old Testament, locusts were one of God's most
- 19:49devastating acts of judgement. They would devour all of your
- 19:53resources within a short span of time.
- 19:55We see it in prophetic literature.
- 19:57We see it literally taking place in actual manifestations of
- 20:00God's wrath. Locust, locust, locust.
- 20:02So again, the student of the Old Testament in the Scripture says
- 20:05this is not good locust. But then you read on and you
- 20:09see. These aren't bugs.
- 20:12Go to verse 7 of Revelation 9. In appearance, the locusts were
- 20:19like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were what looked
- 20:24like crowns of gold. Their faces were like human
- 20:28faces, their hair like woman's hair, and their teeth like
- 20:33lion's teeth. They had breastplates like
- 20:36breastplates of iron, and the noise of their wings was like
- 20:40the noise of many Chariots with horses rushing into battle.
- 20:44They have tails and stings like scorpions, and their power to
- 20:48hurt people for five months is in their tails.
- 20:52They have as a king over them the Angel of the bottomless pit.
- 20:56His name is in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is
- 21:00called Apoleon. What do we make of this?
- 21:07Number one, I don't think it's helpful to try to explain every
- 21:10single detail and what could be the specific meaning behind it.
- 21:15Here's what you take from this. This grotesque description of
- 21:19these beings is meant to reflect the hideousness and the twisted
- 21:25nature of these beings. This is clearly demonic, and
- 21:30these demonic creatures are again, by very nature so vile,
- 21:36so despicable, totally wicked, that their physical description
- 21:42reflects that distortion. I don't know if you visualize
- 21:47this description, if it looks strange, if it looks ugly.
- 21:51It's meant to be because these are again angels that have
- 21:55betrayed the living God and have chosen even to their own eternal
- 22:00doom to resist Him and to fight against His purposes to this
- 22:03very moment. So when you see this, you're
- 22:06supposed to almost cringe and shrink back like this is almost
- 22:10like these are like monsters. They are monsters and though you
- 22:14don't want to pluck every single detail though you can, there is
- 22:16obviously an importance behind these things.
- 22:19If there is one thing to take from it is that they are
- 22:21extremely powerful. Look again at some of these
- 22:25things. Teeth like lion's teeth.
- 22:29Breastplates of iron wings that sound like Chariots rushing into
- 22:33battle, tales that sting like scorpions.
- 22:39And above that they have a king. So there's, there's rank,
- 22:45there's order, there's, there's strategy.
- 22:48In the Kingdom of Darkness, as much as they cause chaos,
- 22:53they're very much sophisticated. And this this fact that they
- 22:59have a king also is extra validation that they are not
- 23:02locusts, real locusts. You know why?
- 23:04Because in Proverbs 30, verse 27, Proverbs 3027 says locusts
- 23:08have no king. It's a very interesting
- 23:11observation. In the book of Proverbs.
- 23:13There's a spiritual lesson behind that.
- 23:15But these locusts, they have a king.
- 23:19And John says he has a name. And for some reason John wants
- 23:24to give us the name in Hebrew and in Greek.
- 23:27And I'll tell you this, it's not so that John can show us that he
- 23:30knows multiple languages. Both of these names in their
- 23:36meaning, represent destruction, represent devastation.
- 23:43But why Hebrew and Greek? To show that the influence of
- 23:47this demonic being, this Prince of demons, affects the whole
- 23:52world, Jew and Gentile. His impact is global.
- 23:57There's nothing outside of his reach in terms of his venom and
- 24:01his plans and his deception and his destruction.
- 24:05So you read this in isolation and you step back and you think,
- 24:08this is, this is horrible. What chance does humanity have
- 24:13against these forces? What can you do to resist them?
- 24:20How can this earth, how can the people of God even fight against
- 24:23these invisible beings that are so obviously destructive and
- 24:26powerful? And though they are clearly so
- 24:30able to wipe out humanity in an instant, they can only go so
- 24:36far. And what we just heard and
- 24:38learned earlier, that's the point.
- 24:40Again, if you just chop off 7 down to verse 11 and put it
- 24:44somewhere, you would think this is who we're up against.
- 24:46But you have to read what we read earlier.
- 24:49This is something for you and I to understand, and I'll tell you
- 24:52why in a moment. But look at what they can't do.
- 24:54Come back to verse 4. They were told not to harm the
- 24:58grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree.
- 25:01So they could not go so far in their attempt to damage
- 25:05anything. They could not kill anybody,
- 25:07though they were able to kill. They can only harm, and they
- 25:09couldn't touch a single plant, a single tree, a single blade of
- 25:13grass. Let me talk about specific
- 25:16authority, but not just what they could unleash in terms of
- 25:20their power, but the duration of it.
- 25:23You can go one second beyond five months.
- 25:30And my favorite, these demonic beings, though they they drool
- 25:37at the thought of being able to devour those who are creating
- 25:40God's image, could only harm those who did not have the seal
- 25:46of God on their foreheads. The people of God were
- 25:50untouchable and this is something again for you and I to
- 25:55reflect on because there is a growing fascination with a
- 25:57demonic and Christendom today. There are entire ministries that
- 26:01are being built on the mistaken idea that genuine born again,
- 26:05spirit filled Christians are in need of deliverance from demons
- 26:08possessing them. In order for that kind of a
- 26:11message to become convincing, these kind of teachers will over
- 26:16and over again highlight and focus on the extent of the power
- 26:20of demonic beings, so much so that they entertain very strange
- 26:24concepts of behavioral patterns that have to be associated with
- 26:28these demonic influences. Do you, do you arrive late all
- 26:31the time for work or for church? There's got to be a demon.
- 26:34Are you sleep all the time? It's probably the demon.
- 26:38Are you impatient? It's a demon.
- 26:40Demon. Every, everything's a demon.
- 26:42Everything's a demon. And why is that presented?
- 26:45Because it calls for everybody to need deliverance, then it
- 26:49brings in business, it brings in followers, it brings in
- 26:52supporters. And no doubt we should never in
- 26:59arrogance minimize what these creatures are able to do.
- 27:05Even Michael the Archangel would not directly rebuke Satan.
- 27:08He called the Lord to rebuke him.
- 27:10So there has to be a level of respect in that sense.
- 27:15But I want to present to you the focus of the Christian that
- 27:20although these are again, very mighty creatures, they are not
- 27:23mightier than God. They are not.
- 27:26They can't even take a step without his permission.
- 27:29They can't choose their weaponry.
- 27:32They can't go as long as they want to.
- 27:35They can't even use one of their hideous fingers or their teeth
- 27:40to cut the grass. They're restricted.
- 27:44They're held back because there's a sovereign force
- 27:47greater than these beings. In fact, if all of hell came
- 27:51against one soul hidden in Christ, they would not succeed.
- 27:56If Abaddon, a Napoleon himself, towered above the weakest and
- 28:03feeblest of all Christians, though filled with the Holy
- 28:07Spirit, he would not be able to do anything.
- 28:10Do you understand what we have in Christ?
- 28:13Do you understand the, the, the, the package of our salvation
- 28:16includes that if we are sealed, yes, this is a specific seal for
- 28:19a specific group of people in a specific amount of time in a
- 28:22specific period of time, but it's no different for us seal of
- 28:24the Holy Spirit. So add on top of this the the,
- 28:29the teaching of being delivered by demons to the concept of
- 28:32Christians being cursed by demons, that there's people
- 28:36there casting curses and casting spells.
- 28:41Where do you get the idea that a Christian filled with the Holy
- 28:43Spirit can be cursed? Where do you get the idea that
- 28:47an innocent believer who went to some vacation and grabbed some
- 28:51souvenirs from a foreign land brought it and you just invited
- 28:54devils to take over your house? Is it that easy?
- 29:01Is our salvation that week? Is our walk with Christ in the
- 29:04Spirit so vulnerable? I was reading the Psalms the
- 29:09other day. I'm going through psalms in my
- 29:10personal reading. I stumbled upon a verse I want
- 29:12to share with you. Listen to this in Psalm one O 9
- 29:15verse 28. Psalm one O 9, verse 28.
- 29:18David says let them curse, but you will bless.
- 29:23Let them curse but you will bless.
- 29:26Is that what you believe? Are you not in a greater
- 29:30covenant than that of Moses and the Israelites who did not know
- 29:34that there was someone and a whole group of people really
- 29:38hoping and planning to curse them as they traverse through
- 29:40the wilderness? They didn't even know what was
- 29:41happening, and God turned every curse into a blessing.
- 29:44Is it any less under the blood of Jesus Christ?
- 29:50Demons are real. Their power is real.
- 29:52There is real possession. There is real oppression.
- 29:54There is a real need for people to actually be delivered from
- 29:57demons. But if you're in Christ, you are
- 30:00untouchable. You are untouchable.
- 30:05It's true in the tribulation period, it's true today.
- 30:07And be careful who you listen to people's personal stories.
- 30:11Do not trump over scripture. Be careful of that.
- 30:16Satan is a deceiver and I'm unfortunately seeing many
- 30:19people, especially the younger generation, gobbling up this
- 30:22teaching for many reasons. But I find this in my Bible that
- 30:28you can have the worst of the worst demons unleashed upon the
- 30:31earth, and those who are sealed by God will not be harmed.
- 30:37That's your inheritance too, because God is sovereign over
- 30:40demons. Lastly, God as you know, is
- 30:44sovereign over death. Come with me here.
- 30:49In verse 5, we read the word torment appearing 3 times, like
- 30:53the torment they're inflicting upon the masses is so intense
- 30:57that look what the masses will choose to do, at least attempt
- 31:00to do in verse 6. And in those days, people will
- 31:03seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death
- 31:08will flee from them. So this will be so overwhelming
- 31:13that that most people, if not all of them, who have been
- 31:17struck by these demons, will attempt suicide, will try to
- 31:23kill themselves, would in in relief try to kill one another.
- 31:27And there's going to be a strange phenomenon during these
- 31:29five months. No matter what you do, nobody's
- 31:32able to die. It's really a miracle.
- 31:36And it's going to only confirm further that the source of the
- 31:39suffering in these five months is supernatural.
- 31:42This is something strange. Now, as you look at this, you
- 31:46might be wondering, why would God allow this?
- 31:49And one might say, well, it's because God doesn't want to give
- 31:52them an easy escape. He doesn't want to offer them
- 31:55immediate relief. I don't think that's God's heart
- 31:57behind it because this pursuit of death, would that lead to
- 32:03actual relief? No, only to greater torment,
- 32:08because Jesus said if you die in your sins, you will perish.
- 32:14So this this was for five months.
- 32:16But there is an eternal torment for the wicked.
- 32:19And if these people had access to the cessation of their life
- 32:23at will, then you're talking about most of the world plunging
- 32:28themselves into hell in a matter of months.
- 32:33Do you know what I see here? Hopefully you agree with me.
- 32:36I see grace. That's what I see.
- 32:40God withheld death. He closed that door.
- 32:44It was not accessible. But why?
- 32:50Because this population had already seen so many things, had
- 32:54received so many warnings, had perceived and experienced so
- 32:57many disasters, and evidently they have not yet called upon
- 33:01the Lord. They're not sealed by Him.
- 33:04And so the Lord now takes it to another level.
- 33:06He actually has a woe attached to this trumpet blast in order
- 33:10for this people to wake up. Some people get saved through
- 33:17preachers and there are other people who get saved through
- 33:19pain and that is God's intention here, that they would finally
- 33:26realize this is not normal, this is not humane.
- 33:28The fact that this is plaguing the globe, the fact that we're
- 33:30trying to die and we can't die. This has to be God.
- 33:33God forgive me, I repent, I call upon you, rescue me.
- 33:41There's an interesting passage in Job that confirms what I am
- 33:44conveying to you in Job 38. And this is where I'm ending
- 33:50verse Job 33. Rather verse 14.
- 33:56It says for God speaks in one way and in two, though man does
- 33:59not perceive it. For God speaks in one way and in
- 34:04two, though man does not perceive it.
- 34:07And what are the ways that he speaks to man, though man does
- 34:11not immediately understand that it's God trying to get their
- 34:12attention. Well, here's one of them.
- 34:13Look at verse 19 of Job 33. Man is also rebuked with pain on
- 34:20his bed and with continual strife in his bones, so that his
- 34:25life loathes bread and his appetite.
- 34:28The choice is food. His flesh is so wasted away that
- 34:32it cannot be seen, and his bones that were not seen stick out.
- 34:37His soul draws near to the pit, and his life to those who bring
- 34:41death. For what purpose?
- 34:47Verse 29 Behold, God does all these things twice, three times
- 34:54with a man to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may
- 35:01be lighted with the light of life.
- 35:08There are some people who are lying in hospital beds today
- 35:12because God is speaking to them. There are people who have had
- 35:17life altering accidents because God is speaking to them.
- 35:23You might be sitting here today and you receive the diagnosis.
- 35:29You don't know God. Could it be that He's speaking
- 35:33to you? I'm not saying every sickness is
- 35:35a message from God. I'm just saying it's a
- 35:37possibility. And one of the reasons why the
- 35:41Lord allows us is because God understands something you and I
- 35:44often forget. These bodies are temporary.
- 35:47This life is short. There is something coming more
- 35:50real than whatever you know here.
- 35:52Eternity. Eternity.
- 35:56And God, in His mercy, though you may even have cursed them
- 35:59because of the pain in your life, knows that that pain is
- 36:03temporary and it's worth experiencing it if you call upon
- 36:07Him to be saved. God speaks in many ways.
- 36:11He doesn't just speak through sermons.
- 36:12This is His primary way, His word.
- 36:14But there are other means that He gets man's attention,
- 36:16especially those who are extra stubborn.
- 36:20What you find with the 5th trumpet is a generation that are
- 36:24extremely stiff necked. And So what does God do in His
- 36:28sovereignty? Well, He's sovereign over the
- 36:29underworld and He's sovereign over the demons, and He's
- 36:31sovereign over death. And He unlocks it and He lets
- 36:35them loose and He allows them to torment people for five months
- 36:37for the sole purpose of them crying out for salvation and be
- 36:41kept for eternity. That's what's happening here.
- 36:47And here's the point I want to end with.
- 36:48If God can postpone death, as we saw for the purpose of a wicked
- 36:54people to have a chance to repent, what does that power
- 37:01mean for those who already belonged to Him?
- 37:06I want to speak to the believer and say remember the truth of
- 37:12this verse. When you are fearful dads,
- 37:16husbands of leaving your wife or children behind prematurely.
- 37:23Cling to this promise and God's sovereignty over death.
- 37:29When you receive the phone call that you dreaded your whole life
- 37:33and a doctor gives you that report and it confirmed what you
- 37:36feared. If you are regularly haunted by
- 37:40the possibility of accidents, or maybe you you get threats from
- 37:47unstable people, and we're seeing that more and more
- 37:50happening here. You want to talk about more
- 37:52manifestations of demonic activity?
- 37:54It's happening in our culture, is it not?
- 37:57Don't lose sight of God's sovereignty.
- 38:01Your King and mine not only has the key to the abyss.
- 38:04Back in Revelation One, we learned that He has the key to
- 38:08death. And in his perfect wisdom and in
- 38:13his wonderful grace, God considers every factor of your
- 38:16life and mine. He knows just the right time and
- 38:21the right means to open that door called death and to say,
- 38:25son, daughter, it's time to walk through.
- 38:29That's the hope that we have. The same one that has the power
- 38:33to withhold death from the wicked.
- 38:35He knows when to suspend it from your life, and He knows when
- 38:38it's time for you to walk in and through it.
- 38:41So what do you have to fear? Our God is sovereign over
- 38:44everything. Our God is sovereign over the
- 38:47underworld, the abyss, the demons who are there, the demons
- 38:50that will be released, and even death itself has to submit to
- 38:54God's will. And you and I get to live in
- 38:57that reality every single day. Why?
- 39:00Because of what Jesus Christ has done for us, that's why.
- 39:03One more reason to celebrate this bread and this cup.
- 39:06We have such a great salvation because of Him.
- 39:09Lord, we thank You for this time.
- 39:12We are spellbound by Your sovereignty and we choose to
- 39:19pause as we are ready to feast on these elements.
- 39:29What a redemption we have. What a salvation we have.
- 39:34What promises are these? Thank you for the seal of the
- 39:38Holy Spirit. Thank you that we are immortal
- 39:42until you say so. Thank you that we are stronger
- 39:48and more resilient because of Christ our Savior.
- 39:52Thank you in a very unpredictable world where it
- 39:56seems like demons are more loosened than at any time that
- 39:59we can remember before. We are safe in Christ.
- 40:04Our children are safe in Christ, our homes, our finances, our
- 40:07bodies. Our ministries, they're safe in
- 40:10Christ. We give you all thanks now as we
- 40:13meditate on these things in Jesus name, Amen and Amen.
