- 0:17Speaker 1: right now with Janet Harvey, and we're going to talk
- 0:19Speaker 1: about an event that's coming up this Saturday, the Sioux
- 0:21Speaker 1: Falls Out of the Darkness Community Walk. First of all, Janet,
- 0:24Speaker 1: thank you for doing what you do, and let's talk
- 0:26Speaker 1: about the walk that's coming up Saturday and how folks
- 0:29Speaker 1: can still get involved.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Oh, John, thank you. Yes, this coming Saturday, Saturday, September 19th,
- 0:36Speaker 2: we are going to be having the Sioux Falls Community
- 0:38Speaker 2: Out of the Darkness Walk. And we will be at
- 0:41Speaker 2: the Levitt Bandshell downtown Sioux Falls on Saturday. We open
- 0:46Speaker 2: registration at 1130. We have a program beginning at 1,
- 0:51Speaker 2: and then we'll have a community walk where everybody gets together,
- 0:55Speaker 2: supports one another, takes care of one another, and walks
- 0:58Speaker 2: as a community for suicide awareness and prevention in not
- 1:03Speaker 2: only Sioux Falls, our surrounding communities, but for South Dakota.
- 1:07Speaker 2: And to get involved, you can just go to our website.
- 1:11Speaker 2: That website is AFSP. It stands for American Foundation Suicide Prevention. Again, AFSP.org
- 1:22Speaker 2: forward slash Sioux Falls, all one word. Very, very nice.
- 1:26Speaker 1: And I'll throw a link on our Facebook page to
- 1:28Speaker 1: make that really easy to find. The event is, again,
- 1:31Speaker 1: from 11 to 2, is that correct?
- 1:33Speaker 2: 11.30 opens registration. 1 o'clock is our program. It should
- 1:38Speaker 2: last about a half hour, 35 minutes right in there,
- 1:41Speaker 2: and then the walk. So however long it takes people
- 1:44Speaker 2: to walk to the falls and back to the Leavitt,
- 1:48Speaker 2: it's about a mile, maybe just slightly over a mile walk.
- 1:52Speaker 2: So I would say 2 o'clock is a good guesstimate, 2, 2.15.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Very nice. So if you want to get down there
- 1:57Speaker 1: a little early and get all set up and ready
- 1:59Speaker 1: to go and and then be a part of the event.
- 2:01Speaker 1: The Out of the Darkness Walk is, again, this Saturday.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And there are a lot of different teams that are
- 2:07Speaker 1: already involved. So if somebody wants to contribute to one
- 2:10Speaker 1: of those teams, that might be a really good way
- 2:11Speaker 1: to do it. And on the website, they can click
- 2:13Speaker 1: and just make a donation. If you don't know somebody
- 2:15Speaker 1: that's on a team, you can make a donation that way.
- 2:17Speaker 1: But if you know somebody from one of these teams,
- 2:19Speaker 1: the teams would all love your donation to go through
- 2:21Speaker 1: them because there's a little bit of a competition too,
- 2:23Speaker 1: isn't there?
- 2:24Speaker 2: Oh, there for sure is. Yes, especially when it's different
- 2:27Speaker 2: families that know one another. And it's all friendly competition,
- 2:31Speaker 2: which is wonderful. But it could be a business team
- 2:35Speaker 2: competing against another business team. It's a lot of fun
- 2:38Speaker 2: when they have those friendly competitions.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And again, the event is coming up this Saturday, the
- 2:44Speaker 1: 19th of September, the Sioux Falls Out of the Darkness Walk.
- 2:47Speaker 1: This is not the first walk that you've done. I
- 2:49Speaker 1: know you've done this for years. How long have you
- 2:51Speaker 1: been involved in this?
- 2:52Speaker 2: I have been involved with suicide awareness and prevention in
- 2:55Speaker 2: South Dakota. This is my 14th year now. All right.
- 2:59Speaker 1: So you've been involved for a while. And again... the
- 3:01Speaker 1: Out of the Darkness Walk. I know they've been doing
- 3:03Speaker 1: these for several years. And it's a group of people
- 3:06Speaker 1: that are wonderful people who come together to hopefully make
- 3:09Speaker 1: a difference. And I believe you are making a difference.
- 3:11Speaker 1: So this is a really good thing to be a
- 3:13Speaker 1: part of. If this is something that kind of rings
- 3:15Speaker 1: true to you and you're going, hey, I want to help.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I want to be involved. It's not too late to
- 3:19Speaker 1: still get involved. The event is coming up this Saturday
- 3:21Speaker 1: at Like I said, I'll throw a link on our
- 3:23Speaker 1: Facebook page to make it really easy to find all
- 3:25Speaker 1: the details. Are there any specific needs that you know
- 3:28Speaker 1: of that you still have for the event this Saturday?
- 3:30Speaker 2: There are a ton of needs. I still need volunteers.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I would be happy to talk to anyone who would
- 3:36Speaker 2: like to volunteer. If it's a business, if you can
- 3:39Speaker 2: get your colleagues to volunteer with you or a family,
- 3:42Speaker 2: get your family members, I would love that. My information,
- 3:46Speaker 2: my phone number is on our website which of course
- 3:50Speaker 2: like you said you'll have a link you'll have a
- 3:52Speaker 2: link there that they can click on my phone number's
- 3:55Speaker 2: right there on that website I'm Janet Harvey I am

- 4:19Speaker 1: the details about the walk. Janet, thank you for your
