- Jaba: Hello everybody, welcome back to the Scout and the Speculator Podcast. This is Will Jarvis, one of your two co-hosts, also known as Jabba Cards, joined as always by Jeremy Brown of Perfect Game Baseball, more importantly known as JGB underscore cards underscore. Cannot forget that second underscore. And ⁓ today we got a fun one. MLB Pipeline. We're recording this on Monday. ⁓ MLB Pipeline, I think yesterday. Jheremy: Yeah, it's been Jaba: on Sunday released their final updated list for twenty twenty six. And ⁓ we got a lot to talk about with this. I'm not gonna, you know, lumber through an intro. There's a lot. I mean we were talking on the phone this morning, there's a lot that we're pretty whooped up about. ⁓ so let's get into it. Jeremy, what's the first thing that stands out to you with this top one hundred list? Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Yep. Yeah. I mean honestly for me, like the big big big thing first and foremost is just how quickly kids from the twenty six drafters get juiced in it. And that might not be where you thought I was going with it, but like I think there's six of ⁓ in the top forty. Like let's see. ⁓ Grady's twelve, you have Cholowski at fourteen, Von Lackey at eighteen. So there's three in your top twenty, ahead of guys like Caleb Bonimer, who hit what, forty home runs this year. Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: You put Grady and Rock ahead of somebody like Theo Gillen, I get the position of shortstop of above a center fielder. But like as you go down, Jackson Flores at twenty eight, who I love. EJ Booth's at thirty six. Drew Burris is at thirty-seven. I just I get it. They're Right. Like, I get it, right? They in Josiah Harthorn's thirty-five. Like, give me the guy that has the body of work. Jaba: And Hartman's thirty eight. Jheremy: Or and if you wanna put these guys in there, put them in like the back end. Let them show something at least, you know? Like I just just because you were drafted high I feel like doesn't equate to being a top top guy right away over guys who have proven it. Like EJ Booth and no Andrew Fisher at all. Or Braylon Payne or Jesus Baez. All guys who have done something at the pro level. And that's not just to say Booth, like I just don't know if he played right away. ⁓ I know Grady played, I know ⁓ I know a bunch of those other guys played, Flora got promoted, Burris played, hit some pumps. I just don't know if Booth actually went out and played, so that's why I use that name. But like, I don't know, it I and I know Tyler Bell's at sixty two above somebody like Nathan Flewelling, Jacob Lombard's at sixty-five. Like literally the guy right behind him's Jarlan Susana. As you just kind of continue to go down Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: I just think there's a lot of guys Derek Curiel's at eighty seven. I just think there's a lot of guys that you could definitely make an argument for being too high. Jaba: Yeah. I th I I think kind of going off what you said. I mean, you're gonna know a lot more about Jackson Flora than I do, but from a lot of stuff I listened to and read pre draft, you know, it was a lot of people pumping the brakes and saying, Okay, you know, this isn't like a Kate Anderson, Tyler Bremner type, you know, it's an advanced arm. He's probably a high floor guy, but you know, he wouldn't have been the first pitcher taken in twenty twenty five, which is nothing against him. I feel like it was a pretty good draft class for pitchers. But I mean i it it just feels weird for me. I mean, he threw one pro inning Jheremy: Yeah. Yeah. Jaba: ⁓ you know, walked a guy struck out too, but he's at twenty eight, and then you go down, you're looking like Ianson's at forty five, Bremner's at forty two, Liam Doyle's at forty. I'm not even a huge Liam Doyle guy, but he really turned it on in double A in the second half. I mean, even Travis Socora at forty eight. I know he missed the whole year. I know he was hurt, so I know that there's th that risk there. But I mean he's thrown, you know, a lot more pro innings. He's thrown a hundred thirty pro innings and been elite through that. You know, I I would take Jheremy: Hehehehe. Mm-hmm. Jaba: Any of those guys over Flora, and that's not a knock on Flora. And obviously it's a bit of like ⁓ you know, you can have the boat or the mystery box, and I feel like everyone's kind of taking the mystery box. ⁓ I mean and then it's like, you know, Kendry Churio's at 50, right? Kendri Churio just did something we've never seen. I mean, he turned 19 four days ago. He was 18 all year. You know, he just pitched out of his mind in single A, eleven starts, one eighty eight ERA, struck out forty-four, walk nine, goes up to high A for 10 starts, three sixty. Jheremy: Hmm. And could even be a boat. Jaba: Teeny RA, 43 innings, he had eight walks and 47 kicks. I mean, he doesn't walk anybody, the strikeouts aren't gaudy, but he's getting one an inning. you know, it's just like he he's 19 years old. He just turned 19 years old. Like, how old is Jackson Flora? Like, he he's 21. So Jackson Flora is actually pretty young for a college pitcher. But it's like, give give me Churio with two and a half years on him, and like I get people are also like, ⁓ well, Churio doesn't really have the high-end strikeouts. Jheremy: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Jaba: Give me that command out of an eighteen year old pitching in high A, like any day. It's like what's his worst case? Like if he stays healthy, his floor is probably what, like a three? Jheremy: Right. Yeah. Jaba: I I mean he may he may not be an ace, you know, he's kinda got like the Ianson thing going, where it's like, you know, he's a bit of a smaller guy, you know, he's not this horse that, you know, you're looking at like a school ball who's gonna throw like two hundred innings and fan two fifty. But like give me give me that any day. And like, you know, I think it's funny, like you said, we got Eric Booth Junior at thirty six, Drew Burris at thirty seven. Again, both great players, but they're sandwiched between Eric Hartman and Josiah Hardschorn, who were both like first team all minor league pick. This year. It's like, you know, I think Drew Burris especially is a great player with like a great track record. But like you said, it's just like I feel like they could have kind of softer launched some college guys. Where it's like it's literally nothing against them and like I'm not gonna act like I know a fraction as much as you do about these guys. But at the same time, it's just like before even getting into the profiles, it's like Drew Burris played twenty eight pro games, ⁓ Eric Booth played eighteen in singular. You know, it's like Jheremy: Right. Yeah. Like I didn't even realize Booth played. But like he was young at draft too, coming out of high school, going right into A ball. Like that's a good challenge at two eighty four with a couple of doubles. ⁓ kept the strikeouts kind of in check, has three s three bags and he is like a very surprising speed guy for being six foot two ⁓ seven. ⁓ like Jaba: Yeah. Yeah, and I I I think neither of us, just to finish that quickly, I mean neither of us are super high on Hartman, but like Hartman just went twenty six homers, fifty six steals and got up to double A as a twenty year old. You know, there's a lot of holes we can poke there, but like that's a pretty historic season and it's just funny to me to see him down there. So I know there was something you were saying that's Bowman specific, ⁓ about a little range here in these rankings. So I'll let you Jheremy: Yeah. Yeah. So like you have your tops, right? You have Jesus Made, Franklin Orias, Leo, Josue, ⁓ Kate Anderson and Eli, kinda your top six. You can go down to Joswar, Seabass, Seth Hernandez and Rainy Ald to round it out. Like, I don't know if the the I and you guys maybe you maybe I'm wrong and you guys are gonna roll your eyes at me. Like the long play upside there compared to literally number seventy one through like seventy-eight, seventy-nine. Like, I'm just as intrigued with a sixty spot separator. You have Justin Gonzalez, Kevin Alvarez, Francisco Rentaria, Juniker, Cooper Fleming, Anjabel Gomez, Cam Cantarello, who isn't Bowman yet, probably enough be another twenty-seven chase guy, and Dax Kilby, followed up by Charles Davalon. Like that's not by any means a bad group. Obviously you have to dream a little bit more with those seventeen, eighteen year olds mixed in. But for what they've already done at the levels of which they've done it, like, you have to have just as much, like like you're looking at a handful of future top twenty prospects, I feel, in that group alone. And I I know there's more forecasting and projecting that needs to go on there. But for where their prices is, prices are for what they could be, like Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: I'm buying that group all day, I feel, over the top ten group. Maybe that's like a yeah, no kidding kind of situation, but that's for me. Jaba: Yeah. But I mean that that was something that stood out to the both of us, right? I I mean it's just there's so much talent there. It's like the only guy that's, you know, older is Cam Cannarella, who turned twenty three last month, and he went completely nuts this year. I mean he he was a twenty five draft guy taken in the ⁓ first ⁓ supplemental round. I mean he had a nine thirty four OPS getting up to triple A, fifteen homers, twenty one steals, seventy nine K's to sixty walks again, playing in the upper minor. Jheremy: Yeah. Yeah, and he's already in triple A, so Yeah. Jaba: I mean, he he's gonna be another big name in 27 Bowman. It's funny to hear you say that because like we kind of keep saying, ⁓ well, this guy's gotta be in 27 Bowman. If all these guys are in 27 Bowman, it's gonna make 25 Bowman look like, you know, garbage. And that was the one that had Weatherholt, Magonagomade, ⁓ 27 Bowman could have, you know, serious, you know, potential. But it's like, you know, all those guys really, I mean, I think Kilby's more like $70. Angel Gomez, I mean, it's hard to say. Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Well Yeah. Could be some monsters in there, yeah. Jaba: I'd imagine he settles around seventy. Juniker's like mid fifties. Fleming's in like the thirties. You know, Alvarez you can probably get in the twenties. It's like you know, like you said, just give me those guys over anyone in the top ten. I think Walcott and Yoswar do both have some, you know, room to run. ⁓ Jheremy: Yeah. Yeah. Jaba: But like, you know, a lot of like the top five guys, like their prices are baked in. That's like the highest they're ever gonna be. I think if you're like looking at this from an investment perspective, that band from seventy one to seventy nine is just Jheremy: Mm-hmm. Jaba: all guys that I would, you know, feel great advocating as buys. And then I mean one other thing that stood out to me, no braille and pain. I'm usually pretty anti K rate guys. You know, that kind of toolsy athlete with whiff problems scares me a lot. But like He hit what, twenty-four homers with or twenty-six homers with twenty-eight steals this year. I mean, he hits the ball so hard. He had like a hundred fourteen mile an hour homer. I mean, he had such a good year. He was young. I think he just turned twenty, or he's still nineteen, and he made it up to double A. And like just looking at some of the other guys in the bottom twenty here, like I love Josh Hammond. I have a lot of his cards and like I think he's gonna be good. It was also his first year just hitting. Well, I guess his senior year high school he quit pitching. But seven Jheremy: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Jaba: second year only hitting, but like he had a seven forty three OPS and he's in here at eighty two. I mean, he hit two eighty six, but there just wasn't a lot of pop. You know, the speed isn't crazy. It's like I I'm just not sure how like Brandon Payne doesn't get in over a guy like that. Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: was just felt weird to me. I mean, I I'm sure, you know, like you said, ⁓ 'cause we were saying, ⁓ sh you know, should we make our own list? And then it was just like, No, it's just so easy to pick apart. You know, it definitely is easy to just like nitpick here and like, ⁓ well they're missing this guy But Braylon Payne was really the one where I feel like him not being on there is pretty tough to explain. Jheremy: Yeah. Yeah. Mean the the other obvious one to point at, not being on there is Andrew Fisher for for everything he did do this year. He's your minor league player of the year through pipeline and you don't have him in the top one hundred, like I mean, like no offen like just looking, right? Like I ⁓ this is just the group I have in front of me. Like ⁓ like Felman Celestin promoted to double ⁓ double A and just ran into a wall there for thirty one games at a buck seventy one, ⁓ forty five strikeouts to nine walks. Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: Aiden Miller barely played this year due to injury. That's at fifty nine and sixty. You're telling me like Fisher couldn't slide in above them. If you want to call it recency bias, you can because he played, but like he played. And he performed. Fisher, that is. ⁓ just like you could very easily slide him in anywhere here, right? Like ⁓ I mean, like Robbie Snelling's out for the year in all of next year. There's just ⁓ Thomas White was out all of this year. You have White, Secor, and Snelling, all of whom probably threw a combined like fifty innings for the three of And Jaba: Probably less, 'cause I th I think Snelling went down real early. Jheremy: He did get called up to the bigs this year. How many innings did he throw? Jaba: Yeah, he got called he got called up and then like immediately died. Jheremy: So he threw thirty-four innings total this year. Between Triple A and the Biggs. And then Thomas White threw how many? He threw twenty-five. Or no, he threw twenty-four innings this year, Thomas. So there it's sixty innings between the three of them, 'cause Sakura didn't throw. So ⁓ just kinda like I feel like there's a lot of like Bryce Raynor was struggled. I just keep going up the list. Jaba: I think I think he went down in spring training. ⁓ that is. Like our cat wasn't that great. Jheremy: R right. I don't know. I just feel like there's a lot of guys that again, we could and you could make your own top one hundred, you could sit here and nitpick, somebody will always have something to say, so I don't want to come across as well this one's three spots too high and I'd have this one here. Just doing some more of the general overall diagnostical breakdown. I just don't think there's a lot of Jaba: Yeah. Right. Jheremy: It doesn't seem like they're in much of a rush to move guys off the list. They only had two guys drop altogether, which means only two spots for two new guys. The two new guys coming in at ninety-eight and ninety nine with Hayden Alvarez and Eddie Azakar. I I mean can I and I'll say it for everybody else, like River Ryan at sixty four, being just turning twenty eight years old. Like he he's eleven years older than Angebel Gomez. Jaba: Yeah. Hard to argue with either of those two. Jheremy: at this point. Not his fault, I get it arm. Like it is what it is. Like he's not dictating that he gets put on this list, but like twenty eight just turned twenty eight in August. Like and he has eligibility. There's a lot of guys too here that will exhaust their rookie eligibility early next year. Or prospects where I think like Kate Anderson Like Yeah, you got Kate Anderson, Walker Jenkins who's up, just going down the list. I know Ethan Salais Jaba: Yeah. We'll see a ton of a ton of new next. Jheremy: Ethan Salas might qualify to get off during the playoffs, right? Like Jaba: No, it it it that playoffs don't even count. Jheremy: ⁓ never mind then. Shows what I know. well he'll by the e beginning of next year, Caitlin Culpepper. How many guys have reached the MLB on the top hundred? Fourteen of ⁓ I believe. It looks like. Control Fing f comes up with fourteen, so I don't know. Jaba: Good bit. I I I I do wanna say I'm not gonna beat the River Iron thing to death. I get that he is like a controllable arm and that that has value no matter how old he is. But he's the same age as I am and I have my high school tenure reunion this spring. Like, cu come on. Like let w Jheremy: Yeah. Ha ha ha. Jaba: Let let's get serious here. ⁓ the last one that, you know, again, like I don't wanna sound like we're just complaining. I I think, you know, we've both covered that, you know, they did a better job than we probably would have. Last one that's insane to me, Theo Gillen at sixteen. That's stupid. ⁓ nine nine sixty five OPS this year, twenty two homers, forty four steals, reaching double A. He turned twenty one a month ago. ⁓ you know I I I don't really get it. I mean, you could say, ⁓ he went backwards, you know, he played exactly half the year at each level. ⁓ eight ninety-four at double A. You know, the pop was still there, ten homers, sixteen steals. I I mean, the strikeouts aren't bad. He walks a lot. You know, I think Theo Gillan, I'm not sure I would put him as like a potential number one guy, but I I think he's otherwise like a consensus top ten guy. I think baseball America had him at five on their last ranking. And it's like, okay, sure. Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: you know, Eduardo Quintero ahead of him. You know, you can just say he's like, you know, more raw power or something. Like Walker Jenkins at 13, like, come on. Like Rock Chalowski even, like, because he came in and, you know, he was supposed to be like so polished. And I mean, only nine games, but he didn't play well in high A. Grady Emerson, I mean, again, a great player, but like Jheremy: Right. Jaba: He just turned eighteen. He hasn't done anything. I feel like Walcott's just being d er not walk out. Theo Gillen is being I was reading the list. Theo's just being disrespected there. you know, I I just think that he should be, you know, ahead of some of those guys based on what his ceiling is too, because it's like he performed, he's young, and he has, you know, the elite athleticism and tools. You know, it's not like he's a guy where it's like, okay, well, he's kind of maxed out and he's just beating up on less physically mature guys. But it's like he has that ceiling too. So it's like that was just one to me that I thought was way too long. Jheremy: Yeah. Jaba: ⁓ But, you know, I th I I think generally speaking, it's a pretty fair list. I get, you know, it's hard to move guys off or down, you know, especially, but you know, the point you had about Fisher, you know, he was their prospect of the year. I feel like you gotta put him in the top one hundred. I mean, n neither of us own any Fisher. But has has this year has crept on Jheremy: Yeah. Yeah. No. No. Jaba: You know, at first we were both like, Yeah, you know, it's not sustainable to carry it's nuts, I'm not touching that. It's like every week you and I both got a little bit closer to like, okay, well at a certain point, like, this is nuts. Like Yeah, like it it's not like it's not like he had like thirty five home. I mean he hit fifty, right? Yeah, I I mean that Jheremy: He he's gotta he's gotta cool down and he never did. So like more kudos to him. Yeah, with the playoffs included, yeah. Like kinda nuts. Jaba: That that's preposterous. Is it it's like, you know, I think the K rate's gonna hurt him a lot and he's gonna come crashing down to earth at some point. But like he didn't and like you have to rew like put ⁓ put him in at ninety five over Ike Irish. Like, come on. Like Yeah. Jheremy: Yeah. You gotta just get ⁓ in there, I feel. And like just go into some of the new drafts. It's just not I mean, they could have come and lit the world on fire. It really doesn't have to anything to do with ⁓ like what they did for their placement, where I say like I just feel like they get and it's every year, it's not just this draft class. Like every year, like the top drafted guys get juiced up pretty good, which I get. And they're doing it based off long-term upside. Jaba: Yeah. Right. Jheremy: They do Grady above rock, which like kind of speaks to where they were thinking of the draft. Von Lackey, like had a good year. He hit two fifty with three home runs. Had thirteen bags as a catcher. You love to see that. Got promoted out of the complex to A ball. ⁓ whatchamacallit? ⁓ Drew Burris at seven pumps in his first go at Pro Ball. ⁓ so yeah, I mean, glad to see Christian Zaweta. Za Zaweta moving on up. Former Yankee. Jaba: Yeah. Yeah, that's awesome. I feel I feel like we forget about that. Maybe not us even. Some people do. We don't. Jheremy: Florent Florentino, I still am like he hit two twenty eight in high A as a nineteen year old. Which like actually his birthday's coming up. We'll be twenty all of next year, but he hit twenty four home runs, I believe, in high A as a nineteen year old. Like, you like that. If you can get that whiff rate under control at all, like I think you're looking at a potential top ten guy. Like But we can keep going up and down and Jaba: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I think you and I have both been high on him, but Jheremy: I think there's just a lot of like it's just tough, like we said. And that's why we're not gonna do our own, 'cause you could sit here and move guys around all throughout. And you don't know necessarily what their ranking criteria is in terms of like I mean anything. If it's performance based, if it's long term upside based, if it's a little bit of everything based. like Braylon Doty. Braylon Dodie's sixty seven, which is great, but his prices do not reflect that. And it that's wild. Jaba: Right. For sure. Jheremy: To me that he's still so cheap. Jaba: He's been a guy where people have been saying that for so long. Like I I I think both of us and just like you know, a ton of smart people that we respect have been saying the same and he just hasn't hasn't moved. ⁓ Jheremy: Show on. Yeah. Scarborough got hurt, right, Caden? Jaba: He came into spring late 'cause he had like a melanoma. So I I also own a ton of him, so I'm definitely a little biased. But like I I think this year, you know, was just off from the start. You know, he shot you know, he was late and he didn't have a good year, but twenty twenty five he was so good. you know, I think he gets a little bit of a pass, but neck next year he he's gonna have to, you know, come out hot and stay hot. But Jheremy: Mm. Yeah. Yeah yeah. Like for as good as like Liam Doyle was this year, like he settled in really well. Like, go look at so he's number he's number forty, but then go look at Joseph DeZerwa and what he did at sixty-nine. Like a thirty spot difference, and it's like, holy cow. Like hundred and forty nine punches to thirty walks with a one eight six against over what, a hundred and thirty one innings, and got up to double A and was just as dominant in double A as he was in high A. Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: Like that's just an arm I I still feel doesn't get the love he deserves. Six foot eight lefty. Yes, he does like he doesn't light up the radar guns, but he throws hard enough from a funky enough slot, like it's a low three quarter and it's low to mid nineties, like I don't know. I think I if yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Jaba: Yeah, I I feel Yeah, I mean I I I feel like between, you know, Dowdy, Zerwa Ianson and even Churio, I feel like the guys with the best numbers got punished for potentially not looking like a potential number one just in terms of, you know, having the monstrous fastball torque off of. Those are all guys who had really great walk numbers, you know, really refined command and command, advanced approach. and, you know, it just feels like w which I get, like, you know, I I see why people like Gagewood with the stuff, but Gagewood is ahead of all Jheremy: You might not For sure. Yep. Jaba: those guys. He had a four thirty six ERA this year again, ERA isn't everything in the minors, but like, you know, Zirwa, Ianson, Churio, all of their numbers just blow his out of the water. But, you know. Jheremy: Yeah. And then ⁓ in the back end, two more names for twenty-seven Bowman. Let's just keep creating the checklist, right? With Ramon Marquez. I mean I guess three, Nolan Perry and Caden Hunter. Three arms in that ninety to ninety four range altogether. Like like give me ooh, I don't know. I think I'd take Caden Hunter and then Ramon Marquez. And maybe then Nolan Perry more 'cause he's like a twenty three year old in A ball, but he just turned twenty three in double A. Jaba: Yeah. Jheremy: But all three of them have been very, very good. So I just think this this next checklist has a shot to be pretty pretty impressive. So obviously we have a whole release before that, but Jaba: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I mean it doesn't even really matter who they hold out of twenty six draft to put in. You know, it it'll probably be yeah, but ⁓ Jheremy: It'll it'll likely be great. Because it's always a second bat taken. Or second overall pick unless it's an arm, then it's a next like whatever makes sense type, you know. Jaba: Yeah. But like even twenty six draft guys notwithstanding, there's so many guys that are just really good, already established. I wonder when River when did River Ryan have his first Bowman? Jheremy: And and like do for it. Yeah, we got I don't think he had a first. Jaba: Yeah, he yeah, he he never That's funny. Jheremy: Then you have some like other international guys who could be in twenty seven, like other top rank guys. Emmanuel Luna was a top ten. Victor Valdez, I know people like him. Like Yeah, I believe so, yes. Yeah. Yep. True. Albert Fermin from the Diamond ⁓ from the Astros is somebody I would have chased out of this release. Jaba: Yeah, Ray is he Reyes? Yaws and pen yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Jheremy: If he were in this one, that's probably would have been my guy to buy. But he didn't. He wasn't, so Yeah. ⁓ Kleiner. It's funny now too looking at like this list. Like when the checklist comes out, I'm looking at the international list. You're we're we've also completely lost script now. But you go look at the list and you're like trying to remember all these names heading into a checklist and breakdown of who's what. And now that you know the checklist, you know where they are, you know what their card looks like, you know what their auto looks like, you go through and you're like, ⁓ you weren't that highly regarded or ⁓ you're here, huh? And just like it's funny how like some of these names click now all of a sudden. At least for me, so Jaba: Yeah. For sure. Yeah, I agree with that. Alright, well you you got anything else you want to talk about, or are we good to good to wrap there? Jheremy: ⁓ just said Samil Serrano is twenty six in the top ⁓ fifty. And yeah, and that he ain't selling like he's twenty six, so that's all. Jaba: What from last year's pipeline? Let's see. Hang on. Not now I feel like I wanna find Your boy Ricky Duran. Jheremy: Ricky Jaba: Yeah, I guess there's now Jheremy: The joke there is the joke there with Duran is that his colors go up all the time for decently priced and I ask Jabba every time if we like him. Jaba: And then we're like, ⁓ no. yeah. I haven't seen much Wilton Guerrero on eBay. I feel like he fell by the wayside. Yeah. Yeah. Jason Hor I didn't realize Jason Horton was so highly touted. I knew that he had a nice ear, but I didn't realize. Shout out T T. No shot, he listens. Does he? Is he? Jheremy: People chased them too. People were chasing ⁓ Yeah. Yes. T T listens. Big fan of the program. T T if you hear this, you gotta text us. Jaba: Yeah, Texas. Alright. Thank you everybody for listening. Love you guys. ⁓ until next time. Go Mats. See ya. Jheremy: Cool. Go Mats.
