- 4:26Speaker 12: The Anaheim Ducks.
- 4:27Speaker 11: That, by the way, coming up Thursday, seven o'clock. Based

- 4:40Speaker 11: All right, without further ado, let's jump into it right now,
- 4:43Speaker 11: Everett and now with us Bella is the light.
- 4:46Speaker 12: It's over.
- 4:47Speaker 2: I'm ready.
- 4:48Speaker 12: Everyone's ready. The question is are you ready?
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yeah? I'm ready, Oh so ready, me?
- 4:54Speaker 2: Me and Big al so ready. Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I'm counting the minute. I have been since April, and
- 4:59Speaker 3: it's nice to be back. I think it's great to
- 5:04Speaker 3: have a home opener and a regular scheduled time versus
- 5:08Speaker 3: an afternoon game. It's gonna be a fun couple of
- 5:11Speaker 3: couple of first games here at home.
- 5:13Speaker 11: It's gonna feel kind of like bizarre, but maybe in
- 5:15Speaker 11: a good way where we're not, you know, to doing
- 5:18Speaker 11: this thing tee and off opening pug drop at one pm.
- 5:21Speaker 12: In the middle of a week day. It was fun,
- 5:23Speaker 12: but it was a one year type of thing.
- 5:24Speaker 11: We're doing this back to normal now for seven o'clock
- 5:27Speaker 11: for opening night against the Anaheim Ducks. All right, before
- 5:30Speaker 11: I let both of you jump in, I'm gonna just
- 5:33Speaker 11: start off with this as kind of a generalization of
- 5:36Speaker 11: what we went through over the last several months. And
- 5:40Speaker 11: this all began way back in April, and the team
- 5:42Speaker 11: wasting no time once last season ended to turn the page.
- 5:48Speaker 11: Ron Francis moving further up now to his current role
- 5:51Speaker 11: as President of Hockey Operations, Jason Botterol jumping into the
- 5:55Speaker 11: general manager's chair, and a coaching change now bringing in
- 5:58Speaker 11: Lane Lambert and for a good chuck in this coaching
- 6:01Speaker 11: staff now brand new, there was a pleasure to aggressively
- 6:05Speaker 11: turn over this roster here for the summer. We are
- 6:09Speaker 11: now on the cusp of seeing Berkeley Catton perhaps make
- 6:12Speaker 11: his NHL debut, Fellas, what have you made over the
- 6:17Speaker 11: last six months that lead us up here to game
- 6:21Speaker 11: number one of eighty two and your expectations, Everett start
- 6:25Speaker 11: with you.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, listen, Mikey.
- 6:30Speaker 6: It's it was another, you know, summer of change, which
- 6:35Speaker 6: I don't think is ideal when you're trying to build consistency,
- 6:41Speaker 6: but I mean it also was something that was necessary.
- 6:45Speaker 6: And I think you can you can tell by the
- 6:48Speaker 6: player's performance in the preseason during training camp that a
- 6:52Speaker 6: lot of most of the guys, all the guys have
- 6:55Speaker 6: bought into Lane Lambert and his style and the way
- 6:58Speaker 6: that he wants to play and the way that he
- 7:00Speaker 6: he coaches, and you can you can get a sense
- 7:03Speaker 6: of when he speaks, the guys listen, and I think
- 7:07Speaker 6: that's important also too. I think you know, there's something
- 7:12Speaker 6: to be said about bringing in two new assistant coaches,
- 7:17Speaker 6: and Chris Taylor and Aaron Schneeklous, So now you know
- 7:20Speaker 6: you have all new voices on that bench. Obviously Jess
- 7:25Speaker 6: Campbell is still with the team, but you bring Collins Julianello,
- 7:29Speaker 6: another goaltending coach and to replace Stephen Breere. So you're
- 7:34Speaker 6: you're bringing in an entirely new voice. And it's one
- 7:36Speaker 6: of those things where the ownership of the management group
- 7:41Speaker 6: of the Kraken they want to win and and I
- 7:45Speaker 6: think that this was the group obviously, this is the
- 7:47Speaker 6: group that they felt most comfortable with and they felt
- 7:50Speaker 6: that they get them to that point.
- 7:53Speaker 4: But you know, now it's.
- 7:54Speaker 6: Time to to really put up or shut up, right.
- 7:58Speaker 6: I mean, if we're being honest, three coaches in three years,
- 8:01Speaker 6: three coaches in your first five years, if that's not
- 8:04Speaker 6: an ideal situation. So now I think it's it's very important.
- 8:08Speaker 6: You know, this team's got to take that next step
- 8:10Speaker 6: forward this season. And I don't I don't think that
- 8:15Speaker 6: this is the wrong group to get it done. I
- 8:17Speaker 6: do think that there's going to be a lot more
- 8:19Speaker 6: positive than negative with the crack in the season.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, fits talked about coaching, management and and
- 8:28Speaker 3: and and that's sort of thing I'll talk about players.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I think that bringing in Mason Marchman was a good
- 8:35Speaker 3: ad to the team. I we we talk a lot
- 8:37Speaker 3: about net front presidence. He's a guy that likes to
- 8:39Speaker 3: play in front of the net.
- 8:41Speaker 12: Ry favorite favorite.
- 8:45Speaker 3: He'll he'll he'll be talking a lot about Mason.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Don't do the fly by, don't do the fly.
- 8:49Speaker 3: By presence, Ryan Lingren, you know, gritty defenseman. I think
- 8:56Speaker 3: he he adds that to the blue line. I'm looking
- 8:58Speaker 3: forward to seeing that a night out from him. Freddie
- 9:02Speaker 3: gudrou back on that fourth line in the middle. You know,
- 9:05Speaker 3: one of the one of the odd skills for him
- 9:07Speaker 3: is the shootout, and we got we got a taste
- 9:09Speaker 3: of that in the preseason. He went one for one,
- 9:11Speaker 3: So I look forward to seeing more of that throughout
- 9:14Speaker 3: the season because that was an area that the Kraken
- 9:17Speaker 3: suffered in last season. So he'll definitely be part of
- 9:19Speaker 3: that group. I'm sure in the top three shooting in
- 9:23Speaker 3: those situations. So you know, those three players come in,
- 9:26Speaker 3: Andre Bakowski, mikey Asimont, Joevolena moved out, so you've got
- 9:30Speaker 3: a coup. You know, a few people going both directions.
- 9:34Speaker 3: From a personnel standpoint, I think the net of all
- 9:37Speaker 3: of that is I like the ads. I like what
- 9:39Speaker 3: it does for the team. I think it improves the team.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Does it make it one hundred and twenty point team, No,
- 9:46Speaker 3: but it moves them towards making the playoffs, and I
- 9:49Speaker 3: think that's a reasonable goal for the season.
- 9:51Speaker 12: And now I think you bring that up.
- 9:53Speaker 11: Perfect segue here, because we've talked to players before. I
- 9:57Speaker 11: talked with Ellie Tolbenen during media day and he wasn't
- 10:01Speaker 11: shy to use the actual word playoffs in this conversation.
- 10:05Speaker 11: When you think about the mathematics where you can improve
- 10:08Speaker 11: on incrementally, there is a chance to put yourself right
- 10:11Speaker 11: back into this mix. It depends on who you ask,
- 10:14Speaker 11: because the reality is outside.
- 10:16Speaker 12: Of what we know in this area.
- 10:19Speaker 11: There are not a lot of people nationally picking this
- 10:22Speaker 11: team to do anything. Matter of fact, a lot of
- 10:24Speaker 11: people nationally picked this team to finish toward the basement.
- 10:29Speaker 12: So I begin with this.
- 10:30Speaker 11: I think, Everett, you've had a conversation before some guys
- 10:32Speaker 11: in this room. I have, certainly, al you have certainly
- 10:36Speaker 11: what does this team need to be at its best,
- 10:40Speaker 11: sneak up on teams where they can grab some valuable
- 10:43Speaker 11: points and put themselves right back into the mix.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think this team.
- 10:49Speaker 6: I go back to year two when this team made
- 10:51Speaker 6: the playoffs, and when you look at it, it was
- 10:53Speaker 6: a depth team. That was when we invented the phrase
- 10:58Speaker 6: the depth of this team is our strength. Then when
- 11:00Speaker 6: you have thirteen guys with career highs.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Goals, assists, or points that season, everyone ropes, everyone rides.
- 11:08Speaker 6: That was the mentality of that year. And I think
- 11:11Speaker 6: you're going to have to have that same type of
- 11:14Speaker 6: mentality and that same type of philosophy. And you can
- 11:17Speaker 6: already see with the way that the team played in preseason,
- 11:20Speaker 6: with the way that they practice, how Lane Lambert has
- 11:23Speaker 6: run the team so far, this is going to be
- 11:25Speaker 6: a team that bases itself on hard work, on defense,
- 11:30Speaker 6: on responsibility, on accountability. I'll give you an example. You know,
- 11:35Speaker 6: there was a play in I believe it was the
- 11:38Speaker 6: Calgary home game in the preseason. The Cracking were at
- 11:41Speaker 6: the end of a shift and they got the puck
- 11:43Speaker 6: to the red line and you could tell there was
- 11:45Speaker 6: a three on one and a half three on two developing,
- 11:49Speaker 6: and I feel like normally, you know, guys would have
- 11:52Speaker 6: tried to force their way into the zone, but they
- 11:55Speaker 6: made the responsible play. They dumped the puck into the zone,
- 11:58Speaker 6: they go off for a chain, and they come back
- 12:00Speaker 6: fresh on defense, and then they bottled up the Calgary
- 12:03Speaker 6: flames and we're able to get the puck back. It's
- 12:06Speaker 6: that type of discipline. It's that type of small, you know,
- 12:12Speaker 6: changes to the way that this team plays that I
- 12:14Speaker 6: think are gonna end up ultimately ultimately playing dividends. And
- 12:18Speaker 6: I've said from day one, since Lang got here, this
- 12:21Speaker 6: is a cracking team that's going to have to be
- 12:24Speaker 6: comfortable playing a three to two, two to one, three
- 12:29Speaker 6: to one with an empty net hockey hockey game. This
- 12:31Speaker 6: isn't a four to five goal a night team. And
- 12:34Speaker 6: that's okay as long as you're scoring three and only
- 12:37Speaker 6: giving up one and a half or giving up two.
- 12:39Speaker 4: You know, I asked Al, I said a little trivia
- 12:42Speaker 4: question for you.
- 12:43Speaker 6: Uh in the NHL, how many goals do you need
- 12:47Speaker 6: to score to win one more.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Than the other team for a few minutes?
- 12:52Speaker 4: Though? Yeah, exactly, so you need one question?
- 12:56Speaker 12: Yeah, it's okay, you know, yeah, but no.
- 13:00Speaker 4: I honestly I'm with you, Mike. Yeah, I think that
- 13:03Speaker 4: this team is going to be a lot better than
- 13:06Speaker 4: a lot of folks are giving them credit for.
- 13:07Speaker 6: But it's going to take that hard work mentality, that
- 13:12Speaker 6: defensive first mentality, and like, listen, are you going.
- 13:15Speaker 4: To have a forty goal scorer? Fifty goal scorer? You'd
- 13:18Speaker 4: love to have one, but probably not.
- 13:20Speaker 6: But if you can have six twenty goal scores, if
- 13:23Speaker 6: you can have you know, seven or eight guys pitching
- 13:27Speaker 6: in thirty plus points, I think you're going to go
- 13:30Speaker 6: a very long way into you know, being a team
- 13:34Speaker 6: that is you know, for me, the floor of this
- 13:36Speaker 6: team should be battling for a playoff spot, playing meaningful
- 13:41Speaker 6: games after Saint Patrick's Day into late March any early April.
- 13:45Speaker 6: That should be the baseline your year, within four to
- 13:48Speaker 6: five points of a playoff spot, if not fewer, all
- 13:52Speaker 6: season long.
- 13:53Speaker 4: And I think they have the group that can compete
- 13:55Speaker 4: to do that.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Well. You talk about discipline and defensive structure, and I
- 13:59Speaker 3: agree with all that. And you know, I mentioned players
- 14:01Speaker 3: that came in. I miss Matt Murray, and I think
- 14:05Speaker 3: he's an important part of what you just said because
- 14:07Speaker 3: obviously in your own zone fits you and I were
- 14:10Speaker 3: talking about this today that you know, goaltenders really like
- 14:13Speaker 3: a defensive first structure because it makes their job easier.
- 14:17Speaker 3: So number one, it's going to make our goaltending better
- 14:20Speaker 3: just by having that structure. Number Two, I like the
- 14:23Speaker 3: idea of having a third guy in the mix to
- 14:25Speaker 3: make everybody kind of stay on their toes and be competitive,
- 14:28Speaker 3: and you're starting to see that on the ice as well.
- 14:31Speaker 3: So I think that's part of it as well as
- 14:33Speaker 3: you know, that's part of the answer of how do
- 14:36Speaker 3: you get back to the playoffs. But also to your point,
- 14:39Speaker 3: there are some guys from that twenty two to twenty
- 14:41Speaker 3: three season that need to get back to that level.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Vince Done is a great example of that. Fourteen goals,
- 14:47Speaker 3: I think sixty one assists that season. Can he be
- 14:49Speaker 3: that guy again? Can he get back to that offensive level.
- 14:53Speaker 3: I don't think everybody's going to do it. You might
- 14:56Speaker 3: not have a fourth line that produces like that, but
- 14:58Speaker 3: you got guys like Shane Wright k I mean, can
- 15:00Speaker 3: he have his thirty plus goals season? Can Viniers take
- 15:03Speaker 3: that next step? So in some cases it's guys that
- 15:06Speaker 3: have done it before, Vince Done and other guys that
- 15:08Speaker 3: are In other examples, it's guys that have that next
- 15:11Speaker 3: level that they've got to get to. And if those
- 15:14Speaker 3: things can happen this season along with that structure we
- 15:17Speaker 3: just talked about, I think you see a team that
- 15:19Speaker 3: gets into the playoffs.
- 15:20Speaker 11: See I'll say it before, I'll say it again when
- 15:22Speaker 11: we talk about how this roster had to change from
- 15:25Speaker 11: this last offseason. There are two ways to go about this.
- 15:29Speaker 11: It's ultimately how can you improve your team offensively?
- 15:32Speaker 12: Not one guy, but team. And this is one of
- 15:35Speaker 12: the driest off seasons that we've.
- 15:37Speaker 11: Ever seen for NHL free agency, and a lot of
- 15:39Speaker 11: the guys who I mean, I kind of say this,
- 15:42Speaker 11: you know, tongue in cheek, but we're potentially going to
- 15:45Speaker 11: be out there, got scooped up in the Florida Panthers
- 15:47Speaker 11: and look where they are once again. So the point is,
- 15:50Speaker 11: if you can't get Plan A and bring in a
- 15:53Speaker 11: big fish, so to speak, via free agency or trade,
- 15:56Speaker 11: what's Plan B improve your team authensively? Top two bottom.
- 16:00Speaker 11: So Fitz, you mentioned this going back to what this
- 16:02Speaker 11: team's identity was in season two, top to bottom offensive depth,
- 16:07Speaker 11: And for me and I go back into this again,
- 16:10Speaker 11: the Matt says, can you get around based on last
- 16:13Speaker 11: season two hundred and seventy goals that would have put
- 16:17Speaker 11: your seventh last year in the NHL for offense, and
- 16:21Speaker 11: teams that finished at two seventy or around that are
- 16:24Speaker 11: better eight place team Columbus two sixty seven tied for
- 16:29Speaker 11: them Toronto to sixty seven teams above that Colorado, Vegas, Dallas, Winnipeg, Washington,
- 16:36Speaker 11: and John Cooper's Tampa Bay Lightning. Yeah, they all made
- 16:40Speaker 11: the playoffs except Columbus, who missed at by a nose hair.
- 16:44Speaker 12: The point beat and the point being, none of.
- 16:48Speaker 11: This matters without defense. The structure is there with defense.
- 16:51Speaker 11: But with this cracking team, is it possible to ask
- 16:55Speaker 11: for thirty out of Jared McCann for, say, nineteen out
- 16:58Speaker 11: of Jaden Schwartz, twenty two out of Shane Wright, maybe
- 17:02Speaker 11: more twenty five out of Matty Beaneers, ten each from
- 17:05Speaker 11: say Don montor Yannie Newman, twenty from Mason march Mint,
- 17:11Speaker 11: twenty from Tolvenin once he's healthy again, Compocaco. These numbers
- 17:15Speaker 11: add up, and you could in theory get to two
- 17:17Speaker 11: seventy with this structure. So if those things fall into place,
- 17:22Speaker 11: you're giving yourselves a chance.
- 17:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:24Speaker 6: I mean, and we talked a lot about you know,
- 17:26Speaker 6: Matty Beaneers and Shane right in particular. You're looking for
- 17:28Speaker 6: both of those guys to take that next step, right,
- 17:31Speaker 6: and I feel like twenty for Maddy last year, right,
- 17:36Speaker 6: nineteen for Shane. I don't see a world where thirty
- 17:42Speaker 6: for either of them is too tall of an ask.
- 17:45Speaker 6: I don't think that's out of the question for them,
- 17:48Speaker 6: you know, I agree. I think Schwartz, you know, a
- 17:51Speaker 6: twenty goal season from him, Elliot Tolvenin looks like he's
- 17:54Speaker 6: going to be back on the power play and that
- 17:56Speaker 6: shot that we've we've grown accustomed to see.
- 18:00Speaker 4: I think twenty.
- 18:01Speaker 6: Twenty five, that last preseason game as possible. Yannie Newman
- 18:05Speaker 6: at one point led the entire league in PPP pre
- 18:09Speaker 6: ten preseason preseason.
- 18:11Speaker 3: For ten points.
- 18:13Speaker 6: You know, so I'm with you, But you know, you
- 18:16Speaker 6: talk about the offense, and yes, the Kraken didn't add
- 18:19Speaker 6: the big fish, but I also feel like what they
- 18:22Speaker 6: did add was an area that they were missing, and
- 18:25Speaker 6: they added a lot of grit and a lot of sandpaper.
- 18:28Speaker 4: You have a Mason, a Mason marshmanth.
- 18:29Speaker 6: Who can contribute offense, but is not going to shy
- 18:33Speaker 6: away from from the dirty areas. He's not going to
- 18:37Speaker 6: shy away from the physicality. Ryan Lindren is a player
- 18:41Speaker 6: who just wants to work. He is a hard worker.
- 18:45Speaker 6: Freddy Gadreau again, he's not gonna drop the gloves and
- 18:49Speaker 6: and fight every night, but he is a tough grinding
- 18:53Speaker 6: fourth line player, bottom six third fourth line guy who's
- 18:58Speaker 6: gonna chew up some minutes for you and could quite
- 19:01Speaker 6: possibly also get you twenty goals as well.
- 19:03Speaker 4: So you know, I think that.
- 19:06Speaker 6: Yes, this team didn't go out and get the ten
- 19:08Speaker 6: million dollar player, but what they did add was still
- 19:11Speaker 6: an element of I think what they were lacking, and
- 19:14Speaker 6: that was toughness. That was a little bit more grit,
- 19:17Speaker 6: a little bit more sand paper, and I think that's
- 19:19Speaker 6: going to.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Go a long way.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Well. In one of the ways you get to that
- 19:22Speaker 3: number of Mikey, that two seventy number, or you know,
- 19:24Speaker 3: any number you feel you have to get to in
- 19:27Speaker 3: terms of goals scored to reach the playoffs, is health, right, Yeah,
- 19:32Speaker 3: through the preseason big thing. The Craken had a lot
- 19:36Speaker 3: of guys out in preseason. Most of them are back
- 19:38Speaker 3: minus Evans and Cocko. But if you can stay healthy
- 19:43Speaker 3: over the course of the season, then your guys like
- 19:45Speaker 3: Jordan Eberley who was out for the MISTROI of the
- 19:48Speaker 3: season last year, Jared mccannon would to spend time in
- 19:50Speaker 3: the middle that didn't get to playoff full season on
- 19:52Speaker 3: the wing. If just those two guys alone, if they
- 19:55Speaker 3: are healthy playing with Maddy Beniers. Well, you've got your
- 19:57Speaker 3: top line performing and those guys could all potentially hit
- 20:02Speaker 3: career highs.
- 20:03Speaker 11: So whether we see this guy in the mix or not,
- 20:06Speaker 11: that remains to be seen. But such a juicy storyline
- 20:10Speaker 11: that's coming up here, the potential debut of Berkeley Catton
- 20:14Speaker 11: in the National Hockey League, And this week he spoke
- 20:16Speaker 11: with the media on expectations this season.
- 20:18Speaker 10: Yeah, I think there's lots of everything. I think just
- 20:20Speaker 10: the small details. You know, from junior hockey to the
- 20:24Speaker 10: NHL is a big jump, so there's lots of the
- 20:26Speaker 10: little details really matter, just you know, hammering those down
- 20:29Speaker 10: and just you know, trying to build my game as
- 20:31Speaker 10: much as possible, not rushing anything really, just you know,
- 20:35Speaker 10: let me do my thing when I get my chance
- 20:37Speaker 10: to go, do my best.
- 20:38Speaker 12: So Berkeley Catton is here. He will make his NHL
- 20:42Speaker 12: debuts soon.
- 20:42Speaker 11: We don't know what's going to be Game one or
- 20:45Speaker 11: down the line, but the Kraken have now nine games
- 20:48Speaker 11: in theory to decide if they want to keep him
- 20:51Speaker 11: or send him back to the Western Hockey League before
- 20:55Speaker 11: the first year of his three year entry level deal
- 20:58Speaker 11: kicks in. It's a big big jump, as you heard
- 21:02Speaker 11: from what he said going from the w HL into
- 21:05Speaker 11: the NHL. What are the expectations for Berkeley Catton on
- 21:09Speaker 11: this roster to fit in if it is going to
- 21:12Speaker 11: be for a full year this season.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Well, I would say that I like what they're doing
- 21:18Speaker 3: with him so far. And today we saw him subbing
- 21:21Speaker 3: in on a line with Schwartz right in Tolnen, but
- 21:25Speaker 3: in that Schwartz position on the left side. And if
- 21:28Speaker 3: I got to take a guy like Berkeley Catton, who
- 21:31Speaker 3: looks like he's going to start out on the wing,
- 21:33Speaker 3: and put him alongside of somebody that's going to teach
- 21:36Speaker 3: him how to be a pro, how to play at
- 21:37Speaker 3: this level things, he's got to adjust his game to
- 21:40Speaker 3: to be a winger in the NHL. Jaden Schwartz is
- 21:43Speaker 3: top of my list to do that with. So I
- 21:46Speaker 3: like that a lot. Additionally, I would say that, you know,
- 21:49Speaker 3: bringing him up to the NHL level is just being
- 21:53Speaker 3: around the guys.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:54Speaker 3: I loved what we talked to Chandler Steven today. I
- 21:57Speaker 3: love what he said about having a winterton and and
- 22:00Speaker 3: catting over to his house for a home cooked meal. Right,
- 22:04Speaker 3: you don't really understand, but these guys are at five
- 22:06Speaker 3: star hotels. But I'll tell you that thirty dollars burger By,
- 22:10Speaker 3: like the tenth time you've ordered, it just doesn't taste
- 22:13Speaker 3: that good anymore. You know, It's just nice to go
- 22:16Speaker 3: home to someone's house. You smell the food cooking when
- 22:19Speaker 3: you come in, they're happy to have you. And I
- 22:21Speaker 3: think that brings teams together. I think that helps teach
- 22:24Speaker 3: you how to be a pro. And I guarantee you
- 22:26Speaker 3: those two guys will do it for somebody else someday.
- 22:29Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I think I love that story from
- 22:33Speaker 6: Chandler because you want that leadership, you know what I mean.
- 22:36Speaker 6: You've got a number of young guys on this team.
- 22:39Speaker 6: Whether you're up, whether you're down, you're in between. You know,
- 22:43Speaker 6: there are some guys on this team who are living
- 22:45Speaker 6: out of hotels all year long just because of the
- 22:48Speaker 6: nature of their contract, the nature of of what.
- 22:51Speaker 4: They have to do.
- 22:52Speaker 6: So anytime that you can come sit at someone's table
- 22:55Speaker 6: and wrestle around with someone's kids and have a burger,
- 22:59Speaker 6: have a steak in a glass of wine and just
- 23:01Speaker 6: chill and relax and be a human being, that's awesome.
- 23:04Speaker 4: So I love that story.
- 23:06Speaker 6: Today, you know, I love the move of Berkeley Catton
- 23:10Speaker 6: of the wing in the preseason. I thought he looked
- 23:14Speaker 6: a lot more comfortable, He looked had more creativity.
- 23:17Speaker 4: You know.
- 23:18Speaker 6: It wasn't as as glaring of an adjustment when he
- 23:23Speaker 6: moved off to the wing, and I.
- 23:25Speaker 4: Liked his game. He scored his first goal and his
- 23:28Speaker 4: only goal in the preseason.
- 23:29Speaker 6: But I think that move to the wing, in my opinion,
- 23:34Speaker 6: I feel like solidified his spot on this roster. I
- 23:39Speaker 6: think we all kind of thought he was gonna make
- 23:41Speaker 6: the team, unless you know, it was just an absolute,
- 23:45Speaker 6: you know, bad training camp, which he didn't have, you
- 23:47Speaker 6: know what I mean.
- 23:48Speaker 4: I think he did show that he could he can
- 23:51Speaker 4: play in this league.
- 23:51Speaker 6: But I do think there's gonna need to be some protection,
- 23:54Speaker 6: you know, in terms of does he play every game
- 23:57Speaker 6: of the back to back? Do you play him in
- 23:59Speaker 6: the first nine in a row and then you see
- 24:01Speaker 6: what happens, right, I think there's gonna be some juggling
- 24:04Speaker 6: going on in the lineup. But I do think that
- 24:06Speaker 6: he's a player that has shown he can learn on
- 24:08Speaker 6: a fly. He's quickly can pick up you know, this
- 24:12Speaker 6: level and this style of play, and you know, I
- 24:15Speaker 6: think that he ends up staying here all year. You know,
- 24:18Speaker 6: he's got the absence with Coppocaco out, so there's gonna
- 24:21Speaker 6: be a month of games that he potentially is gonna
- 24:24Speaker 6: have to play. I mean he may be he may
- 24:26Speaker 6: bypass that nine games next week. Right by the time
- 24:29Speaker 6: we get to to back home after that long road trip.
- 24:33Speaker 6: He may be in his after nine games. So that's
- 24:35Speaker 6: gonna be a huge adjustment for him. But he says
- 24:39Speaker 6: all the right things. I love the way he looks,
- 24:41Speaker 6: in the way that he works in practice. I again,
- 24:45Speaker 6: I think that he's going to stick with this team
- 24:49Speaker 6: all year, but I think it's gonna earn it.
- 24:50Speaker 4: I don't think it's gonna be given to him.
- 24:52Speaker 6: Lane wants accountability, and it sounds like everyone's gonna be
- 24:55Speaker 6: on that same plane, that same level, which is very
- 24:59Speaker 6: refreshing to here. And and I think we're going to see
- 25:02Speaker 6: him here all year.
- 25:03Speaker 11: You guys teed this up appropriately because here's Chandler Stevenson
- 25:06Speaker 11: followed by Ryan Winterton on that dinner over at Stevenson's
- 25:10Speaker 11: place the other night.
- 25:11Speaker 12: Whatever.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Yeah, him and Wentz.
- 25:18Speaker 13: I mean they haven't had a home cooked meal since camp,
- 25:20Speaker 13: so I know what that's like when you're on the road,
- 25:24Speaker 13: and yeah, just kind of getting.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Out of the hotel and.
- 25:29Speaker 13: More so kind of a babysit too. Em and Wentz
- 25:32Speaker 13: were playing hockey the whole time and wrestling and all that.
- 25:35Speaker 13: So yeah, I mean it's obviously good to have him
- 25:39Speaker 13: here and get some home cooking in them. My wife
- 25:43Speaker 13: really likes to cook, so she made pork tenderloin. We
- 25:47Speaker 13: had chicken, we had salad, potatoes, rice, kind of everything.
- 25:50Speaker 13: They think they kind of rolled out of there. So yeah,
- 25:55Speaker 13: it was just something that you know, I I got
- 25:58Speaker 13: invited when I was a young guy being in tell
- 26:00Speaker 13: and Lem in a hotel, and you always appreciated that.
- 26:02Speaker 13: So just yeah, I'd like to have over more if
- 26:06Speaker 13: I could.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Homekick meal is nice, you know, kind of in uber
- 26:09Speaker 3: eats and going for dinner in the basketball we so
- 26:13Speaker 3: se home cooking me it was nice, and you know
- 26:15Speaker 3: it was nice to them.
- 26:16Speaker 11: Hey, there's only so much you can do when you
- 26:19Speaker 11: have food delivered right at your doorstep. And I'll tell
- 26:22Speaker 11: you this, that Stevenson cookbook, it might I think inside
- 26:26Speaker 11: of battle between what they had on the table at
- 26:29Speaker 11: al Kiniski and his brisket as well that sound a
- 26:33Speaker 11: pretty tasty.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Are you telling me? I need to invite some of
- 26:37Speaker 3: the boys over for some brisket.
- 26:38Speaker 11: Oh, I know you literally gave this stuff into my hands.
- 26:42Speaker 11: I've already eaten half of it.
- 26:43Speaker 3: I can't believe you eat it cold, cold.
- 26:47Speaker 12: Warm, I pulled. I plucked it right out of the bag.
- 26:50Speaker 11: Getting home, I took my kids to baseball, I had
- 26:54Speaker 11: dinner on the run, and before then I put it
- 26:56Speaker 11: right into a case of dia.
- 26:57Speaker 12: I had it hot, all right.
- 26:59Speaker 3: Well, all the left bits and pieces that goes into
- 27:01Speaker 3: a plate of mac and cheese.
- 27:02Speaker 11: Just so you know, I might be conceiving ways to
- 27:05Speaker 11: put this stuff in other dishes like green eggs and
- 27:08Speaker 11: hand from doctor Seuss.
- 27:09Speaker 3: There you go.
- 27:10Speaker 12: Loved it, loved it? Al I again last weekend?
- 27:15Speaker 3: Huh that was your food segment.
- 27:19Speaker 11: Yeah, see it's it's it's the obligatory food segment. I
- 27:21Speaker 11: may or may not be baking here for an endorsement,
- 27:23Speaker 11: but we'll talk about that for another day. Uh to
- 27:27Speaker 11: goaltending we go. It will be a three goalie system
- 27:30Speaker 11: to crack and employee starting this week. Officially, Joey Decord,
- 27:36Speaker 11: Philip Grubauer and Matt Murray in the mix, and here's
- 27:40Speaker 11: a lane Lambert is addressing, finding reps for them in
- 27:43Speaker 11: practice day after day.
- 27:45Speaker 14: Think to our goaltendant, coach, Colinsuliano has done a great job.
- 27:49Speaker 14: We've gone through this, you know, at length in preparation
- 27:53Speaker 14: for training camp and you know, heading into the regular
- 27:56Speaker 14: season as to how we can best keep everyone sharp,
- 28:02Speaker 14: you know, and certainly he's done a great job of that,
- 28:06Speaker 14: whether it.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Be through.
- 28:09Speaker 14: You know, practice reps. Clearly, the goaltenders are out on
- 28:13Speaker 14: the ice, you know, half an hour early. If you
- 28:16Speaker 14: have two goalies, a lot of times you're only out
- 28:18Speaker 14: on the ice fifteen minutes early. So there's just or
- 28:21Speaker 14: you know, you have a situation where maybe Joey doesn't
- 28:24Speaker 14: go out and Grooby and Murray do you know of
- 28:29Speaker 14: one of those two plays then they wouldn't go out.
- 28:31Speaker 14: So there's different ways of managing it, and there's you know,
- 28:34Speaker 14: there's some certainly some positives to that in terms of
- 28:38Speaker 14: giving each other proper rest too when when they're playing
- 28:43Speaker 14: and you know, Joey's Joey's going to play a decent
- 28:48Speaker 14: amount here. And I'm not going to announce starting goaltenders,
- 28:50Speaker 14: but certainly, you know, there's going to be times when
- 28:53Speaker 14: he's going to need rest as well.
- 28:55Speaker 11: That's Lane Lambert on the goaltending situation. We know for sure,
- 28:58Speaker 11: beyond the shadow of a doubt, Joey to Cord is
- 29:01Speaker 11: the number one guy. Jason Botterl said, so weeks ago
- 29:04Speaker 11: when training camp opened up, But guys, how do you
- 29:07Speaker 11: see this playing out here? The Cord, Grubauer and Murray.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:12Speaker 6: I mean, I think we've seen three goalies in the
- 29:16Speaker 6: past and the NHL, and sometimes it's worked.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Usually it hasn't.
- 29:22Speaker 6: And that's that's not me causing, you know, saying anything
- 29:26Speaker 6: that's untrue, like just go go back and look at
- 29:29Speaker 6: the last few teams that has happened.
- 29:31Speaker 4: And I do think that, you know, I forget. I
- 29:33Speaker 4: think it was it was you that might.
- 29:35Speaker 6: Have said it a little bit ago about the competition
- 29:38Speaker 6: pushing each other, and I think, yes, Joey is the starter,
- 29:42Speaker 6: but you know, I guarantee you he's just as motivated
- 29:45Speaker 6: to keep that starting job because he's got two very capable.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Goalies behind him.
- 29:51Speaker 6: If you're Matt Murray, if you're Philip Grubauer, you're trying
- 29:54Speaker 6: to be that number two, that go to guy. You know,
- 29:58Speaker 6: if I'm putting my my analytic hat on, I do
- 30:04Speaker 6: think that there's going to have to come a time
- 30:07Speaker 6: where there's gonna need to be a hard conversation or
- 30:10Speaker 6: a decision that's gonna have to be made, because at
- 30:12Speaker 6: the end of the day, you got two nets in practice,
- 30:14Speaker 6: you got one net during the game, obviously, And you know,
- 30:19Speaker 6: I don't envy either goaltender. I don't envy the coaches
- 30:22Speaker 6: of the management having to make that decision.
- 30:26Speaker 4: You know.
- 30:26Speaker 6: If if I'm guessing, and again Lane, you know he's
- 30:30Speaker 6: not gonna tell us the starters, but it wouldn't surprise
- 30:33Speaker 6: me to see all three goalies get too three games
- 30:38Speaker 6: in the first twelve and then maybe that's kind of
- 30:41Speaker 6: your you know in baseball, your extended spring training, maybe
- 30:45Speaker 6: that's your extended training camp if you will get another
- 30:49Speaker 6: decent look at some guys and potentially have have to
- 30:52Speaker 6: have those conversations. I don't know, that's me speculating. I'm
- 30:56Speaker 6: just guessing here, but I do think that at a
- 30:59Speaker 6: certain point there there's going to need to be just
- 31:04Speaker 6: two goalies on the roster. But I like what the
- 31:08Speaker 6: competition has brought so far. I thought all three goalies
- 31:12Speaker 6: performed well in preseason, and again I don't envy the
- 31:16Speaker 6: decision makers having to make this, potentially make this decision.
- 31:21Speaker 3: Yeah, listen, we're not a unicorn doing this right now.
- 31:24Speaker 3: There are some teams in the league that have three
- 31:26Speaker 3: goaltenders on their opening day rosters. And these aren't, you know,
- 31:30Speaker 3: bottom seller teams. This is this is Tampa, this is Colorado.
- 31:34Speaker 3: I think Carolina was on that list. But you know,
- 31:37Speaker 3: teams do this when they've got some question marks around goaltending,
- 31:41Speaker 3: and there's nothing wrong with that. And I think that
- 31:44Speaker 3: we have some question marks as well. Will we have
- 31:47Speaker 3: three goaltenders after the first of the year, I'd be
- 31:50Speaker 3: I'd be shocked. I think this question mark gets answered
- 31:54Speaker 3: in the next two months, next two and a half months.
- 31:56Speaker 3: But I'm excited to see it. Like I said, I
- 31:59Speaker 3: think the competition is good for the overall result that
- 32:03Speaker 3: it will have.
- 32:04Speaker 11: Yeah, Philip Grubauer this year in the preseason save percentage
- 32:10Speaker 11: nine two five in two games, Matt Murray say percentage
- 32:14Speaker 11: nine two zero into games.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Can then be.
- 32:17Speaker 11: Interested to see how all this plays out around Joey
- 32:20Speaker 11: de coord here to begin the season. Speaking of that,
- 32:23Speaker 11: let's talk schedule before we make our final calls here
- 32:27Speaker 11: to wrap up this podcast. Ducks coming up on Thursday,
- 32:31Speaker 11: Vegas on Saturday, and then the big old six game
- 32:35Speaker 11: swing Montreal on their opening night, Ottawa, Toronto, Philadelphia, Washington,
- 32:43Speaker 11: those two teams back to back, and then ending in Winnipeg,
- 32:47Speaker 11: and you come right back home to face the Edmonton Oilers. Fellas,
- 32:52Speaker 11: how big is this opening stretch going to be?
- 32:57Speaker 4: No goohed good, no big out, big out.
- 32:59Speaker 3: You're up okay from a schedule standpoint, I like seeing
- 33:03Speaker 3: a lot of these teams in the first month. There's
- 33:05Speaker 3: still some figuring out that's going on, new players, that
- 33:07Speaker 3: sort of thing, and so you know, the Kracken are
- 33:09Speaker 3: gonna need to steal some wins against these top teams
- 33:13Speaker 3: in October. You know, like you said, Mikey, Edmonton twice
- 33:17Speaker 3: in the in that month. You're still one of those
- 33:20Speaker 3: I'd rather have those two games in October, in those
- 33:23Speaker 3: two games in January February, let's put it that way.
- 33:26Speaker 3: They're going to face some other top teams in the
- 33:28Speaker 3: month as well. You mentioned Montreal for their home opener.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Vegas is going to be a tough games, So you
- 33:34Speaker 3: know what, you steal a few of those wins from
- 33:35Speaker 3: those top teams, and you beat the teams you should beat,
- 33:38Speaker 3: you come out of that month on top. In my opinion, I.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Love the schedule.
- 33:42Speaker 6: I think it's a perfect mix of a couple of
- 33:45Speaker 6: teams that you're going to be right there with in
- 33:49Speaker 6: terms of standings, in terms of record. You know, you
- 33:52Speaker 6: look at Anaheim and Seattle, right though, I think those
- 33:56Speaker 6: two teams are going to be battling for, you know,
- 33:59Speaker 6: us second wild card or battling for trying to get
- 34:03Speaker 6: into that playoff conversation. You've got the teams that you
- 34:06Speaker 6: would love to beat in Edmonton, in Vegas, in Toronto
- 34:10Speaker 6: on hockey Night in Canada. That's gonna be wonderful, you know.
- 34:14Speaker 6: But I do think that for the Kraken, if they
- 34:17Speaker 6: can go five hundred game above game under hover or
- 34:24Speaker 6: better than five hundred, I think that that's gonna be
- 34:27Speaker 6: a win. And we're gonna we're gonna get tested early.
- 34:30Speaker 6: Because again I think I'm with you, Al, I don't.
- 34:32Speaker 6: I don't want to see Toronto when Austin Matthews as
- 34:34Speaker 6: a chance to really pick it up in December.
- 34:37Speaker 4: I'm not trying to see Connor.
- 34:39Speaker 6: McDavid and Leon Dreisidle in January, Zach Hyman was just
- 34:43Speaker 6: put on lt I R. So he's gonna be out
- 34:45Speaker 6: for a while for the Edmonton Oilers. You know Vegas,
- 34:49Speaker 6: they've they're going through some injury issues as well.
- 34:52Speaker 12: Getting Mitch Marner in Game two of the season.
- 34:54Speaker 6: You get Mitch Marner in Game two of the season,
- 34:57Speaker 6: but you also get Mitch Marner who was still trying
- 34:59Speaker 6: to get used to Jack Eichel and everybody else. So
- 35:02Speaker 6: I said, yeah, I would much rather see Game two
- 35:06Speaker 6: Vegas as opposed to Game twenty two Vegs right, So
- 35:11Speaker 6: I think that's a favorable schedule from that standpoint. A
- 35:14Speaker 6: lot of coaches will tell you. I love getting on
- 35:16Speaker 6: the road early and getting a long trip out of
- 35:18Speaker 6: the way. There's a team dinner when you get in
- 35:21Speaker 6: on Sunday, Canadian Thanksgivings on Monday, so you're gonna be out,
- 35:24Speaker 6: You're gonna be you know, Al Kaniski, We're gonna roll
- 35:27Speaker 6: him into the Montreal booth after Canadian Thanksgiving dinner.
- 35:31Speaker 4: Looking forward to that.
- 35:32Speaker 6: But I love the schedule and I think it's one
- 35:35Speaker 6: that the Kraken can navigate. And like I said, if
- 35:38Speaker 6: they can obviously you want to win as many as
- 35:40Speaker 6: you can. But if you're coming back home after six
- 35:44Speaker 6: eight games and you're three three and two, or you're
- 35:48Speaker 6: four to three and one, or you know, you're, you're
- 35:52Speaker 6: whatever it is, I think you're in a really good spot.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Here's the one last thing I'll say about the schedule,
- 35:58Speaker 3: and Mike, yes, you've probably got a point on this too.
- 36:00Speaker 3: But as difficult as the schedule is in October, and
- 36:03Speaker 3: like I, like I said, I'm okay with it, it
- 36:06Speaker 3: kind of flips the other way for November. So if
- 36:09Speaker 3: you come out of October and like you said, if
- 36:11Speaker 3: it's you're a game or two above five hundred, you
- 36:13Speaker 3: better not let off the gas in November because there's
- 36:16Speaker 3: a bunch of games in there that you should win.
- 36:19Speaker 3: And I think the krack and missed too many of
- 36:20Speaker 3: those last year. So would I rather have the schedule
- 36:23Speaker 3: the other way? No, because I think that you if
- 36:26Speaker 3: you play to the level of that competition in October
- 36:29Speaker 3: and you carry that level into November, you should win
- 36:32Speaker 3: all of those games.
- 36:33Speaker 11: A lot of a lot of points you can grab
- 36:36Speaker 11: off the table in that November slate Chicago, San Jose,
- 36:40Speaker 11: Saint Louis Winnipeg. Some folks say maybe falling back a
- 36:44Speaker 11: bit San Jose again, Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh as well.
- 36:50Speaker 3: There's a lot talk we talked about that.
- 36:54Speaker 6: You know that that American Thanksgiving deadline. You know, you
- 36:58Speaker 6: go back the last twenty years. I think it's over
- 37:01Speaker 6: eighty eighty one eighty two percent of teams that are
- 37:05Speaker 6: in a playoff spot by American Thanksgiving go on to
- 37:09Speaker 6: make the playoffs.
- 37:11Speaker 11: So we're running out of time, our last hit on
- 37:14Speaker 11: this here, we're gonna get down to the brass tacks
- 37:17Speaker 11: question to get into the playoff mix. The Krack and
- 37:20Speaker 11: will need what I'll begin right here. For me, Number one,
- 37:26Speaker 11: it's gotta be health, because without health, you cannot have
- 37:30Speaker 11: depth when it comes to the scoring needs that they
- 37:33Speaker 11: have right now to be productive and hit that benchmark
- 37:36Speaker 11: to be among the more productive teams combined with defense
- 37:40Speaker 11: to be into the playoff mix. I think for me, secondly,
- 37:43Speaker 11: goaltending behind Joey Decord as specially effective when it comes
- 37:49Speaker 11: to the back to backs. They'll have to play the season.
- 37:53Speaker 4: Yep. Those two for me, and I think a third
- 37:55Speaker 4: I'll add on to that.
- 37:56Speaker 6: The Krack and I said it before, I'll see it again,
- 37:58Speaker 6: and they have to be comfortable being a hard working,
- 38:01Speaker 6: defensive first team. This is gonna be a team that's
- 38:04Speaker 6: gonna win a lot of two to one games, a
- 38:05Speaker 6: lot of three to two games.
- 38:07Speaker 4: You know, it's okay.
- 38:09Speaker 6: You don't have to be the sexiest team every night
- 38:11Speaker 6: as long as you're winning. And I think if this
- 38:13Speaker 6: team can buy in to that hard working philosophy and
- 38:16Speaker 6: they do it effectively, I think this team, again, they
- 38:20Speaker 6: will be better than a lot of people give them
- 38:22Speaker 6: credit for. And I think they can make the playoffs.
- 38:24Speaker 3: And I'll add a fourth the special teams. The special
- 38:27Speaker 3: teams has to get better, and I think under Chris
- 38:29Speaker 3: Taylor and Aaron steaklof that, you know their schemes that
- 38:32Speaker 3: they're working into the team right now, if they can
- 38:35Speaker 3: get those percentage points better by two, three, four, five
- 38:39Speaker 3: percentage points, I think that's gonna have a big impact
- 38:43Speaker 3: on the outcome of this team.
- 38:45Speaker 12: In April, the blank slate's a beautiful thing.
- 38:47Speaker 11: It begins Game one of eighty two coming up Thursday. Fellas,
- 38:51Speaker 11: I know we all can't wait time to get after
- 38:54Speaker 11: it once again.
- 38:55Speaker 6: Last thing I'll say at the time of this record
- 39:01Speaker 6: the Seattle Kraken are in first place.
- 39:04Speaker 4: Yes, specific division.
- 39:06Speaker 12: I'm you heard it.
- 39:08Speaker 2: We're unbeaten.
- 39:09Speaker 4: The Cracking are in third place in the Pacific. LA's
- 39:12Speaker 4: down free nothing right now, Cracket in first place.
- 39:17Speaker 7: We're all starting zero zero.
- 39:19Speaker 11: How can the Kraken build off of that and begin
- 39:22Speaker 11: this season with a word that begins with an, s
- 39:26Speaker 11: ends with a K, and rhymes with beak. I won't
- 39:29Speaker 11: say it ever, it's superstitious.
- 39:32Speaker 12: I see that look right there. But hey, we're all.
- 39:35Speaker 11: Zero zero and the Cracking can work on things starting
- 39:39Speaker 11: on Thursday with a very positive note. All right, glad
- 39:42Speaker 11: you hung out with us here. That'll cover our basis.
- 39:45Speaker 11: To open the season, the Cracking take on the Anaheim
- 39:47Speaker 11: Ducks Thursday, first of two games at home, then after
- 39:50Speaker 11: that six consecutive on the road. You can catch all
