- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me covering one piece the
- 0:12live action Netflix series episode two, The Man in the Straw Hat. In
- 0:21this episode, we really get to properly meet Buggy the Clown, and I
- 0:28gotta tell you, guys, this dude is very good. That wow.
- 0:38Welcome to Unspoiled, Wait spoiled you know, you get it, you get
- 0:45it. Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you very
- 1:07much to Gabby for commissioning this episode. Oh my god, I'm so sorry
- 1:14about that mess of an intro. I just want to say, once again
- 1:19to Gabby, thank you for commissioning this. What a delight this is already,
- 1:25And like I feel like this is the sort of thing where even when
- 1:30it's not good, I'm still gonna have such a good time that I'm gonna
- 1:34kind of not care. And I may be wrong about that, but I
- 1:40feel like just being in that place is pretty good. You know, it's
- 1:45like a nice it's a generous mindset to be coming from. When it's time
- 1:52to do my little chats with y'all. So this dude, jeff Ward,
- 1:57I'm looking at the IMD be here. I thought for sure when I first
- 2:04saw him in the trailers that this was the dude who played Daredevil. I
- 2:08can't remember his name, but he is an extremely adorable, also very pale,
- 2:15black haired actor, and he does look quite a lot like that actor.
- 2:23But this is somebody who I'm looking through his IMDb just to see what
- 2:27else he has been in, and it says he's known for Hacks, Brand
- 2:31New Cherry Flavor, and Agents of Shield, and I have only seen like
- 2:36a couple episodes of Agents of Shield. I haven't seen either of the other
- 2:38two things, and looking through a lot of like, it's all stuff I
- 2:45have never heard of in my life. So yeah, this dude is just
- 2:50kind of an unknown quantity from me. But I am so pleased with his
- 2:57performance. He really manages to walk that line of being a little bit pathetic
- 3:05and also extremely scary, and that is a really really tough line, Like
- 3:13it's extremely easy to tip over too far onto the side of like so scary
- 3:19that the clown thing doesn't exactly work thematically anymore, or it would be a
- 3:24very different type of clown that it would be. And we're very clearly leaning
- 3:29into this like circus thing here, and you could also lean too much into
- 3:35the silly side, and I would argue that's kind of what the show did
- 3:40at first. Like Buggy, I did find him pretty intimidating, but there
- 3:47were points where I was sort of like, why is this guy in charge?
- 3:51And this Buggy isn't giving that at all. I know why he's in
- 3:55charge. This is a man who is really much more competent in a lot
- 4:04of ways, I would say, and I think that is I don't want
- 4:10to say, that's just like better because in one piece, the villains not
- 4:15being entirely competent can still work because everything is so goofy and silly that I
- 4:21don't mind that, you know, but when you're doing a live action there
- 4:26has to be a sort of change in that part of the tone in order
- 4:32for things to feel like there was a point to it being made in live
- 4:38action. Does that make sense? You can't, like if you just completely
- 4:43imitate everything in the original cartoon, you're just sort of like, why are
- 4:48we doing this? So the fact that they have made him scarier, I
- 4:55think is necessary. I think that really works. Well. Oh my god.
- 5:01Michael in the chat says Buggy was great, I have no nose,
- 5:06and then asterisk notes get out of here, Michael get just get Sarah,
- 5:15fram says, out of a series full of amazing s tier casting and performances,
- 5:18Jeff Ward's Buggy is top two for me. Yeah, this is like
- 5:24I mean, I have seen this type of character before, right, we
- 5:31have all seen And I don't just mean like crazy clown man. I mean
- 5:35like agent of chaos who is thinking like he's funny and silly, but is
- 5:43actually violent and scary. And it can can be you guys, it can
- 5:48be so boring. It's wild how a character that is supposed to be unpredictable,
- 5:56a real wild card, can feel like I know everything this guy's gonna
- 6:02do. I know practically the exact dialogue. I know everything about this guy
- 6:08because snore like it really is tedious to watch certain actors try this character and
- 6:19it just isn't working. And there is something about the way he carries his
- 6:26body, the looseness of him which really like the physicality of what his fruit
- 6:32power is. It ties quite well together in that sense, but also just
- 6:40gives him the sort of like the I'm trying to think of the wording here,
- 6:46like the posture sometimes of like a child, the way that kids just
- 6:50seem like, you know, how they can fall and it's like nothing because
- 6:55they're so loosely strung together that it just like they stand up and shake themselves
- 7:00out like they're a rag doll, and it's fine. And he can have
- 7:04that sort of energy to him, and the smiling and laughing when he does
- 7:11decide to laugh, feels like he is really genuinely feeling whatever it is he's
- 7:16attempting, not necessarily like, oh, this is so funny, although sometimes
- 7:21it is that simple, but the rage behind that laughter is so apparent,
- 7:30and I just fucking he's killing it. He's killing it. So let's see.
- 7:36Sarah m says anime Buggy was more a joke. This is much closer
- 7:41to manga Buggy, but even scarier. Okay, noted. So I'm getting
- 7:46ahead of myself as I am wont to do, because we have to start
- 7:49things off with a flashback, and you guys, I have come to realize
- 7:57in myself, I mostly don't like flashbacks. This is not a one piece
- 8:03problem. This is an issue of mine, and I still don't really know
- 8:09why, because like it's there are times where it can be done well,
- 8:13but mostly when I like flashbacks is a flashback to an earlier time when that
- 8:18person was still an adult. I don't like flashing back to childhoods, and
- 8:24I don't know what my ideal is with that. I think partially it's an
- 8:30impatience with child actors a lot of the time, which is super unfair,
- 8:33because this little actor who's doing Young Lufy is the fucking cutest. He is
- 8:39so adorable. Oh my god, when he gets a little hat and he's
- 8:43like crying, he's so good. But I find myself getting very impatient in
- 8:52these moments, and I'm really curious whether or not anybody else has that,
- 8:56because it's not logical. It's not like these flashb aren't interesting, or that
- 9:01they don't do anything for the story. And the acting is good and it's
- 9:05setting things up like they make sense that they are here. But I am
- 9:11so every time you go back going, no, go back to the main
- 9:16story, stop it, you know. So this is a scene where he's
- 9:20been practicing with his gum gum power. He busts up one of the chairs
- 9:26of this little bar and she has to sit down and talk with him about
- 9:30how some people are going to treat you differently because you're different now and you're
- 9:35gonna have to be prepared for that, and he doesn't really care. He
- 9:39doesn't like. This is one of those funny times where in a lot of
- 9:45stories, when somebody is told people might treat you different. Now you later
- 9:48on see them treated different and they realize like, oh, they were so
- 9:52right, and life is so hard, And it's really funny because he doesn't
- 9:54care here and he doesn't care now. Loofy is who he is and he
- 10:00just never really changes his attitude in regard to other people's opinion of him,
- 10:05which is sort of great. So this is when the gents who are part
- 10:15of Oh my God, I keep wanting to say Red Hats that's not him
- 10:22Red Shanks Crew mentioned, oh, we've got enough supplies here for a few
- 10:28months, and the one dude with the afro kind of winces when he realizes
- 10:33that Lufy is there. It's clear they were not going to tell Loofy.
- 10:39They were like Shanks was going to break it to Lufy himself when it felt
- 10:43right, and they just kind of dumped this information into Lufy's lap here without
- 10:46warning. So now he has to have this whole talk and Shanks has to
- 10:54tell him because he says when are you guys going to be back? And
- 10:56he says, we're not coming back. This kid just his whole face falls.
- 11:03I swear he is so precious. And the lady who runs the bar
- 11:09says, what did you tell him? And he just says the truth,
- 11:13which I think is usually the right policy. You can't just tell the kid,
- 11:16oh, we'll be back in such just and then fucking not do that.
- 11:20So then we come back to the present and Nammy is attempting to crack
- 11:28this safe and this is so good, you guys, because she wants some
- 11:35space, she wants some quiet to concentrate, and he is not leaving her
- 11:43alone. She says, I need absolute silence. He says, I know,
- 11:46I know absolute silence. It's just that this is my first real pirate
- 11:54score. Can you believe that? There's a point just before this where he
- 11:58says, I'm just feeling so pirty and I laughed out loud. There was
- 12:05this look. I know I've already sung his praises, so I won't just
- 12:13get into it too much. But in Yaki, what the fuck with your
- 12:18fucking timing? This dude is very perfect. He is loofy, and there
- 12:24is just no two ways about it. I can't get enough of him in
- 12:28this role. He is absolutely inhabiting this persona and the way that he can
- 12:39deliver a line like I just feel so pirty and it feels a thousand percent
- 12:48sincere and real, like a real sentence. Amazing. He's just so good.
- 12:56Meanwhile, Nami is trying to get this thing open and is really losing
- 13:03her patience because he will not leave her alone. There's a point where he
- 13:07comes and like hovers right over her and then puts his head against hers and
- 13:11she starts like yelling at him, and I had forgotten that Zorro was even
- 13:16there. But he says, can you guys keep it down? Because she
- 13:20shoves Lufy's hat off his head and it starts flying away, and he says,
- 13:26not cool, don't mess with my hat. And this is one of
- 13:30the first moments that he has looked as young as he is meant to be.
- 13:33This is not cool, and she's like, I don't get it.
- 13:37What's the deal with this fucking hat? But we know what it is and
- 13:46Soro He's like, I'm trying to get a nap and she says, oh,
- 13:48I'm sorry, are we interrupting your beauty? Sleep, and he says,
- 13:52don't like what you see, don't look and I was like, I
- 13:56would like to know who doesn't like what they see when they look at Zorro,
- 14:01because let's be real here, kids. So Nami manages to unlock this
- 14:09safe, and when they open it, there is a what do you call
- 14:16it? A rolled up poster that I think is for kuro the he's the
- 14:26pirate captain for the the Kitty Cat Pirates. What do they call it again,
- 14:30you guys, I always forget, but I think that's him. I'm
- 14:33wondering if he's going to be in the show or if this is just supposed
- 14:37to be a little bit of a reference for our sakes, because, like
- 14:41it was mentioned earlier by Morgan that he caught them all the you know,
- 14:48that he took down the Black Cat Pirates. And I can't tell whether or
- 14:54not it's supposed to be that he's saying that but it's not true, or
- 15:00if it's the show just being like, oh, yeah, remember the Black
- 15:03Cat Pirates. We are gonna mention them as a little Easter eggtall but they
- 15:09aren't going to be in the show. It's just kind of a fun throwaway
- 15:13line for those of you who know what I'm talking about, because it could
- 15:16be either one. You know, sometimes things specifically get put into the script
- 15:20because they aren't going to do that, and then sometimes it's preppy because that
- 15:26thing is coming so we'll see. But so they're looking in there and you
- 15:31can see Zoro being kind of like, this is disappointing because he was expecting
- 15:37there to be actual like wealth, and instead there is this map, beautiful
- 15:43map, lovely. But when Namius like, this is better than gold,
- 15:50this is knowledge, and again what a Goofy line, but she delivers it
- 15:56with true sincerity. So just as they are getting into like, oh the
- 16:03grand line, how does this work, she says to Loofy, wait do
- 16:07you not know where it is? And he says, well, I guess
- 16:10I need a navigator. So this is when we get our first Like.
- 16:18It's interesting to me because you guys know how many times you've had to explain
- 16:22to me the way the world is set up in the map for this place.
- 16:26And I think this may have to be one of several explanations the show
- 16:33gives, because it is a really weird setup, this map, and I
- 16:38can't imagine it's going to be easy for viewers who are new to this series
- 16:45to understand. But you know, she does the whole northwest southeast, and
- 16:49it's all set up in a way that you wouldn't expect. And then there's
- 16:52this strip down the middle called the Red Line, and this band across the
- 16:56middle is the Grand Line, treacherous stretch of ocean with bigger cities, bigger
- 17:06pirates, bigger treasure, flush with riches and ripe for the picking. And
- 17:14it's really weird. And I understand the way that the narrative has to work,
- 17:21but considering how it incredibly densely populated, the Grand Line is that it's
- 17:30treated like a big secret how to get there? When it spans the entire
- 17:36globe like this, it's kind of you know, I know that the entrance
- 17:44to it, the way that you get to it is through you know what
- 17:47I mean. So, but it just does feel weird that, like,
- 17:49oh, it's this closely guarded secret, because later on it doesn't feel like
- 17:52it needs to be. But yeah, so this is when Lufy explains like
- 18:00he hid the treasure on the Grand Line all in one piece, and Nonny
- 18:06is like, yeah, people have been looking for twenty two years and the
- 18:07reason nobody has found it is because it's not real to it. She says,
- 18:12I can't wait to see the look on your face when we find it.
- 18:15And I do love the assumption he's making that she'll be there, because
- 18:18it's not lost on her that he fully expects them to both be part of
- 18:22his crew. He has been rejected numerous times, and he's not taking that
- 18:26shit seriously at all. So this is when a firecracker goes off above the
- 18:33ship and they all assume that it's the Marines that they were found. Loofy
- 18:38is the only one that doesn't pass out immediately upon inhaling this gas, and
- 18:44we watch him swallow the map in its tube, which I don't recall if
- 18:52he actually does this in the anime, but I will say watching a real,
- 18:56actual person do this is extremely upsetting and I did not care for this
- 19:02at all, So excuse me, sorry, I'm just like getting allergies.
- 19:11So he just manages to look up and out at the ship that's coming toward
- 19:15them and see that there's a Jolly Roger on it before he passes out.
- 19:21And when we wake up, everybody is super groggy. It seems like they're
- 19:27inside a crate. Or a box or something at first, and it's extremely
- 19:33jarring once it gets lifted away and you see where they actually are. The
- 19:40fact that they were like in the midst of a stage having this conversation where
- 19:47it feels like they're super super private, but then it turns out there are
- 19:52so many people potentially watching and listening that there was something about that that I
- 19:56hated, you know, because the light coming in every crack, it really
- 20:02looks like this is a crate outside or a crate on the deck of a
- 20:08ship, like it looks like outside light, and so it's extremely disorienting when
- 20:15it's revealed where they actually are. So yeah, they're arguing about how,
- 20:22oh we need a plan. We've been captured, YadA, YadA, YadA,
- 20:26and Lufy says, well, if there are pirates that capture us,
- 20:29I'm a pirate. I can just talk to them and not mean It's like,
- 20:33dude, there is one type of pirate. They are bad people.
- 20:37You won't be able to talk to them. And that is the moment where
- 20:44the lid comes off and you see these people come like twirling down from the
- 20:48ceiling and they lift the front of the box up and out and then we've
- 20:55got acrobats flying around, We've got this like fire breather, We've got some
- 21:00on a unicycle, and all these people on the in the bleachers applaudding but
- 21:07also crying, which I swear. These actors who have to play the audience,
- 21:15they're doing a really great job of being like on the edge of hysteria
- 21:21but having to pretend to be enjoying themselves. And yet they don't have to
- 21:26be that convincing if anybody watched them and they could see easily these people are
- 21:30not having a good time, but they do well enough as distant audience members,
- 21:38and it's really disturbing. It's genuinely like not fun to watch these people,
- 21:48you know what I'm saying. Like I was, I was surprised at
- 21:52how bothered I was by this. Florence says, this, that was so
- 21:59upsetting to me. These people agree. Florian also says, I love how
- 22:03Nami says all pirates are the same, and we right then see the Buggy
- 22:07pirates not different at all. Yeah, that also hit me as well,
- 22:10like, oh, they're all the same. And then so yeah, the
- 22:15whole of this episode takes place other than the flashbacks inside this tent and it
- 22:25works really well, especially like I'm sure everybody knows this, but when you
- 22:29try and do a lot of special effects, it's often done during night scenes
- 22:33because it's easier to cover up the weirdness of how certain things look if there
- 22:38is deep shadow. And so having the scene take place mostly outside like it
- 22:45does in the anime and buggies like particular power being so heavily dependent on CGI,
- 22:55I feel like that would have been very I feel like it been a
- 23:00lot sillier looking in daylight, and in this tent it's so sinister. So
- 23:07this is when he enters and he starts yelling about how the spot my spotlight
- 23:12was late. You completely missed my entrance and oh where, oh, where
- 23:18was the dancing lion? And he yells at the dude that we have seen
- 23:25before in the anime with that like weird furry outfit. Uh I was wondering
- 23:33if they were gonna do the lion thing, and I'm gonna assume this is
- 23:37them addressing that there isn't one because that is probably expensive. I'm, you
- 23:45know, just pretending I know what's happening here. But uh so, so
- 23:53let's see, Oh, Sarahim says they sold how dangerous and messed up Buggy
- 23:56is with that one shot of the chains. Yeah, And this is when
- 24:02Lufy says, oh, hey, I know you. I saw your wanted
- 24:04poster in Shelliston. You're the clown guy, Binky Buggy Ah. Then he
- 24:12says Buggy, the clown, Buggy, the flashy fool. I thought maybe
- 24:18they might do the flashy thing a little bit more. I wouldn't have been
- 24:21mad at it, but they don't. Then he says the genius gesture,
- 24:25and Lufy says, wow, you have a lot of names. I bet
- 24:27everyone in the East Blue knows who you are. And the audience gasps,
- 24:33and he says, what did you just say? And I'm thinking, like,
- 24:36why has he said? That's a compliment. He's saying you're notorious,
- 24:40which I really thought was what you were going for. And Lufy also confused,
- 24:48just that everyone knows who you are. And he comes forward and grabs
- 24:52his face and says, nose. Are you making fun of my nose?
- 24:57Well? I was, but now that you mention it is that thing for
- 25:03real and he reaches up and trust to crab it. I love that he
- 25:11calls axe Hand Morgan, axe hand Moron and waits for the laughter, and
- 25:17when he doesn't get it, he just kind of goes, well, you
- 25:21know, they're not all going to be a winner. It's like I thought
- 25:22he would get mad that people didn't laugh, but it was more like,
- 25:26Eah, that wasn't my best work, only to find out that I was
- 25:30upstaged by three little nobodies who stole it right out from under my No.
- 25:38No, it's in my head now. Ah, this was my favorite bit.
- 25:45I cracked up the way he got so mad about how he almost said
- 25:51nos. Like the absolute irritation that he is feeling that he almost said it
- 25:57himself is so so. Lufy says, I'm not a nobody, I'm Monkey
- 26:04the Loofy, and I will be King of the pirates, and I love
- 26:08no omnious face, just like, oh my fucking god, you can't just
- 26:11shut up. She is like this both with Lufy and Zorro. The two
- 26:18of them just keep on bringing like more tension into the situation. No,
- 26:23me is very much a I'm gonna say what you want me to say to
- 26:30placate you and get you off your guard so that I can extricate myself from
- 26:36this situation, which frankly is a really female approach. And I say this
- 26:44like, as a woman, we are around dangerous men who are extremely unpredictable
- 26:51a lot, and the I will just say what I think he wants to
- 26:56hear so that he doesn't absolutely snap on me is a very valid way of
- 27:03getting out of some of the situations that a lot of us find ourselves in.
- 27:07It's why when so many people are like, if you don't want to
- 27:11talk to a guy, why give him your number, because they might kill
- 27:14us if we don't, and that's a very real threat. Like all you
- 27:18have to do is google girl killed for not giving man her number, and
- 27:22you will find scores of articles women stabbed for not giving man her number.
- 27:29There have been girls whose faces have been cut. It's just you know.
- 27:33So the fact that Nami handles things the way she does and gets really irritated
- 27:37at these two for not being more careful, it both makes sense. The
- 27:45two of them are fighters, and they have abilities that are far different and
- 27:49much more advanced than most people they run into, so they just don't have
- 27:53much to worry about. Nami is just a regular person and she can fight,
- 28:00like I feel like in the show for this, she can fight better
- 28:03than she can in the anime. She's not really a fighter in the anime,
- 28:06and she can hold her own decently in this, but I would not
- 28:10call her like a fighter. And it makes sense that she's the one going
- 28:15I'm just gonna lie, I'll do what I need and she gives them both
- 28:19up and is about to fucking roll out, and I'm not mad at her
- 28:22over it, you know, like they don't seem to be prioritizing their survival
- 28:30and she is a survivor. That's what she does. So anyway, there's
- 28:37a oh my god, I forgot about the moment. Buggy basically does like
- 28:41look around everybody on mute when they all start laughing, and he does get
- 28:47that like complete silence when he draws his hands out. So yeah, he
- 28:52starts talking about how he is destined to find the one piece and Loofy will
- 29:00never find it because he won't last a minute in the grand line. So
- 29:06this is when Zoro starts us to like, you know, start some shit.
- 29:11If you just surrender, maybe I'll let you live. And Buggy knows
- 29:17exactly who he is. He's like, oh, it's a celebrity. It's
- 29:22too bad that I don't like sharing the spotlight. Maybe we should skip right
- 29:26to the finale. My freaks put quite a bit of rehearsal time into this
- 29:32little abduction, and I can't If I can't reward them with that map,
- 29:37then maybe I'll have to find some pound of flesh for them instead. And
- 29:45this is when Nami says, what if I had something to offer you?
- 29:48And she sets Loofy up by throwing his hat into the air to reveal the
- 29:53fact that he has devil fruit powers, because this makes him a freak also,
- 29:59and maybe he could be added to the crew. She ski daddles while
- 30:04he is distracted with the you know, spectacle of Loofy's stretchy arm. And
- 30:11she goes out into the town thinking she's going to be able to run down
- 30:18to the docks escape something. And when she gets out there, she sees
- 30:22that the place is a complete and utter wreck. It is smoke and there's
- 30:34like no wall that's still quite vertical. It's pretty upsetting, genuinely, how
- 30:41bad it looks out there. And she when she's brought back inside, even
- 30:48though she does struggle, it seems like she is aware how dire the situation
- 30:53is now and that there's not going to be an easy escape. So she's
- 30:57sort of given up in that respect, and she says, what did you
- 31:02do to their town? You destroyed everything? And he's like, I let
- 31:06them keep their hands, at which point they begin to applaud I love that.
- 31:12He says, here end the theatrics, and at that point all of
- 31:17the spotlights like center on him in the most theatrical way possible. It's great,
- 31:25I want, It's wonderful. So he begins to press tell me where
- 31:32the map was, Like, I heard you say that it was in a
- 31:36safe place. So we're gonna have to make our guests uncomfortable in the green
- 31:41room and the two Zoro and Nami get dragged away while Loofy is brought front
- 31:49and center, and what they do is stretch him. But it turns out
- 31:57he can be stretched quite far without any problem. So this is when we
- 32:06jump back over to the Navy headquarters the Marines, and we have got Kobe
- 32:12getting suited up to go and you know, do his first day. And
- 32:19we've got Garp turning up to question Morgan about what happened. And it surprised
- 32:30me a little bit. And I don't know, guys, is how MEPA
- 32:35always supposed to have been a marine or has he been like put in the
- 32:37Marines as a punishment for fucking up? What was it that, do you
- 32:45know? Because like, I don't remember seeing him in this uniform in the
- 32:47show, and I may just have forgotten it, but I was startled by
- 32:52it, you know. I always thought that he was sort of separate from
- 32:54everything and not part of the I don't know, but anyway, Yeah,
- 33:02Vice Admiral garp Hero of the Marines, the man that captured gold Roger and
- 33:09Morgan is talking about how the attack came without warning and it was all he
- 33:15fabricates this whole dire situation that definitely did not happen. And when Garb sees
- 33:24that there's a new recruit in the Marines, he zero's in really hard on
- 33:32Kobe here and later on questions Kobe quit closely, I think sensing that,
- 33:39you know, I don't want to say that Kobe is the weak link because
- 33:44that feels like more means spirited than I think it is. I think he
- 33:47can just see like, oh, well, this thing happened, and then
- 33:50you signed up on the same day. Obviously you got here because of them,
- 33:55you know, putting two and two together. I also have to mention
- 34:01Garp's little hat looks so much funnier in the live action in combination with the
- 34:09rest of his clothing, because everything else is tailored to a tea like he
- 34:15has a fly outfit. It's sick. And then this little hat just it
- 34:22feels like it really does not work. It's funny like it does work.
- 34:28But do you know what I was saying? Anyway, So this is when
- 34:37Nami starts to work on picking the lock to her cage and Zorro has a
- 34:44little confrontation with this dude who comes rolling in on a unicycle. This dude
- 34:50is cracking me up. So I can't remember his name, but he is
- 34:55the woman with the stripey hair, who I feel really I said this before.
- 35:04The way that he is done in the show, he is so immediately
- 35:08recognizable. I was really pleased with the some of the characters. The change
- 35:15to their costume for the live action is somewhat dramatic in order to make them
- 35:20seem less cartoonish, I think you know. For example, Alvida was toned
- 35:25down a lot. All of the coloring for her stuff was toned down,
- 35:30but this dude's is almost identical I feel like and I just really enjoy him.
- 35:38So he has a grudge against Zorro because Ro killed his brother, cut
- 35:45his head off, and took him away. There are so many moments with
- 35:47this that I love, but the one I liked the best was you really
- 35:51don't fear death, do you? And Zora is saying, no, I
- 35:54just don't fear you. But what he doesn't realize he's doing as he keeps
- 36:00throwing knives and Zorro is utterly unflinching, is he's slicing through Zoro's bonds.
- 36:07So eventually Nami gets out, shoves him into Zorro, who headlocks him,
- 36:15and then he just goes. He just passes out. It's just a sleeperhole
- 36:17and he's down. Meanwhile, we have this fascinating thing going on with Lufy.
- 36:24He's getting stretched, which is not bothering him in the least, and
- 36:29Buggy is questioning him, trying to find out where the map is, and
- 36:32Luf is just doing like the whole like, well, I'm hungry, don't
- 36:37circuses have cotton candy just pushing his buttons for the fun of it. So
- 36:43finally Buggy is like, all right, I'm asking the wrong questions, we
- 36:49got to get you out of your comfort zone. You're really young, you're
- 36:52trying to be King of the Pirates. Who are you trying to impress?
- 36:55Is it a girl? Is it your parents? And he says is it
- 37:00a fallen idol? Somebody that you looked up to? And Lufy can't help
- 37:06but flinch a little bit on that one, and he realizes that he hit
- 37:10it, and as he's looking at Lufy, he begins to put two and
- 37:16two together with the hat and he's like, Oh, I knew this,
- 37:21dude, that were a hat just like this. He I thought was my
- 37:27friend Red Haired Shanks and he betrayed me. I love this because this episode
- 37:37we did not find out what the betrayal was, but once you do,
- 37:42it's so fucking funny because it just it's nothing, you know, so his
- 37:49whole like grudge here, they make it seem very serious, and I really
- 37:54would love to see the reactions of people who don't know what the betrayal is
- 38:00finding out, because I don't know if they changed it for the live action,
- 38:05but I'm hoping they didn't because that shit is so like pitiful to be
- 38:10carrying this kind of rage for this long honestly, sir, You've got to
- 38:15get a hold of yourself. So Lufy gets defensive about shanks, and at
- 38:24this point of course, he says, stretch him till he breaks. This.
- 38:30Dude is like, don't make me do this, and Buggy says,
- 38:31well, I will pick somebody from the audience then, and he picks child,
- 38:36which gets Lufy's dander up, and he begins to pull himself out of
- 38:40these restraints in order to save this kid. Pretty fun little moment when he
- 38:46just like manages to undo this, and there's a real sense of he could
- 38:51have just undone this the whole time, Like he could have It didn't have
- 38:53to be like this. You thought you had control of the situation. And
- 38:57he was able to get out And it's not until this and when he yanks,
- 39:01the kids like mouth up Buggy to they be like tell him you're having
- 39:05so much fun, so that he's like smiling, Oh, it's so creepy,
- 39:08you guys, really awful. So this is the first moment where Buggy
- 39:14finds out what or sorry, Lufy finds out what Bucky's power is. He
- 39:19punches Buggy's head, which goes flying off, and Lufy looks at his own
- 39:23fist, like wait, wait, there's no way, and then his head
- 39:30snaps back into place and he explains about the chop Chop fruit and it's great
- 39:38for like, I really enjoy how incredibly theatrical all of his movements are,
- 39:49and you could just accept that he is this way just as a villain,
- 39:53but the fact that he's literally on stage makes it all seem like part of
- 39:59the s theme, you know, like I don't know the whole thing,
- 40:04it just works really really well. And yeah, so this is when he
- 40:12does the whole like you can slice me and you can dice me, and
- 40:15he we see the first moment of him like stretching in all of his parts
- 40:21separating and it's really creepy looking, and once again he knocks Lufy out using
- 40:29some of that red powder. This is when you know, the whole thing
- 40:32goes down. But backstage then we go to Garp questioning Kobe, and Kobe
- 40:43eventually like starts. Kobe tells him that it was loofy and that like Lufy
- 40:49kind of saved my life because there's almost Garp is. I won't say that
- 40:54Garp is like I'll kick you out of here. It's more that Garp is
- 40:59just maybe you aren't like cut out for this, you know, And then
- 41:07at one point he says like, oh, maybe we'll put you out on
- 41:09one of those crosses in the yard. But as much as I believe that
- 41:15he would, I don't feel like I don't take this that seriously in this
- 41:19moment, but yeah, he Kobe explains about being on al Vida's crew,
- 41:27and he says Lufy the straw Hat Pirate, And it's really clear when Kobe
- 41:32says that he feels bad to even be saying Lufy's name, but he warned
- 41:39Loofy like the next time we see each other, we may be enemies.
- 41:43So there is a sense of inevitability here in Kobe being like, I feel
- 41:49like a bad person, but he knew what I was signing up for,
- 41:52and I knew what he was, you know, where we were going to
- 41:55be. This is when Garp says, why are you pretend to be a
- 42:00marine? And Kobe is like, I'm not. I want to make the
- 42:02world a better place where people can feel safe. That's what I told Loofy
- 42:07and he set me free, and Garp just says, did he Now,
- 42:14why didn't you tell anyone about this? I was worried they wouldn't let me
- 42:17enlist, then my dream would be over. And Garp seems a little bit
- 42:25moved by this, so yeah, he uh pushes a chair over. He
- 42:31has to push it with his foot, it's such a weird motion. And
- 42:36he says telling the truth is a core value of the Marines. Isn't that
- 42:42right, Boguard, Yes, sir, one that seems to be lacking at
- 42:46this particular base. One last question, this uh straw hat pirate? Do
- 42:58you owe him any elitian? And Kobe really takes a minute here, like
- 43:05he doesn't know what to say for a second, and finally just says he's
- 43:09a pirate. Pirates should face justice, and Garp says good and slaps him
- 43:17really hard on the shoulder. Then we'll find him together. And I don't
- 43:25know what to think of this. It's just such a different thing, you
- 43:29guys than you know what I mean, Like Garp's whole deal and him being
- 43:32involved in stuff this early is just so different than what I thought we were
- 43:39gonna do. So anyway, it is not It's fine. But this is
- 43:45when we get the flashback where young Loofy is saying that he's not hungry.
- 43:52I think that's like the first time in his dialogue that we have ever heard
- 43:57him say that. And this is when the best man who threw a drink
- 44:00on Red Shanks is coming and troubling them again. Lufy, you know,
- 44:10shoots his mouth off, gets gripped up, and then Shanks comes up and
- 44:16is like, you can pour a drink on me, but you don't fuck
- 44:22with my friends. And this is where Lufy is starting to understand exactly where
- 44:29Shanks draws the line. And we get a pretty fun moment here, you
- 44:31guys, where he does a finger guns at a guy and like pretends to
- 44:39pull the trigger and then the guy actually goes down and it's his friend behind
- 44:45him who pulled the trigger. And I really I've watched this episode twice now,
- 44:50and both times it caught me a little off guard how perfect that was.
- 44:53I really liked that moment. And we get a really really f on
- 45:00fight sequence here. The Afro guy is the last to stand up. He's
- 45:05like so leisurely about the whole thing, and he's trying to shoot one of
- 45:09the pirates, but there's his friends in front, and so he like looks
- 45:13over at this post and then he shoots sideways at the post instead and the
- 45:20bullet bounces off. And the whole way that this goes, with the staging
- 45:25of it and the over the top quality of how like competent these guys are,
- 45:30is really really fun. I really enjoyed this fight. It's like it's
- 45:37almost dance like. It's so easy, but in a way that doesn't feel
- 45:45corny. It just feels like, well, everything is over the top in
- 45:49this universe, so that's fine, you know what I'm saying. And we
- 45:53then cut to the present where Lufy is in a tank of seawater, which
- 46:00so that he can't use his power, and we get a sort of like
- 46:07flip flop back and forth between this and the flashback where he started to drown
- 46:13because he was fault. He was knocked out of this little dinghy that the
- 46:17badman put him in by a sea king. So Buggy is trying to get
- 46:24him to tell him where the map is because he will drown and there is
- 46:29going to be nothing he can do to save himself, and is telling Loofy
- 46:35that his friends have abandoned him, and he says, if you'll just tell
- 46:38me where the map is, I may have a special place on my crew
- 46:45and Loufy like pulls himself to his feet and it seems like he's gonna say
- 46:49something, and he just says never, and I love Buggy just says why
- 46:53not and like punches the glass and it's such a moment of like true frustration
- 47:00and losing his cool for a second, Like the why not seems like a
- 47:05real question, you know, that whole sense of like I don't get it,
- 47:10dude, just fucking cooperate. I It's just excellent, very very well
- 47:16done. So of course this is when we go back to the flashback and
- 47:23we get to see Shanks facing off with this sea king and telling him to
- 47:30get lost. And now that I know more, I have to assume that
- 47:35when he did this, it was Hockey in the you know, my original
- 47:38viewing, I was assuming it's just an insane moment of bad assery, which
- 47:45I'm not trying to say even with Hockey included, that it isn't that,
- 47:49because it still is. But there's like more of an explanation, I think
- 47:52now. And this is when you see that he is missing an arm and
- 47:58Lufy begins to sort of lose it and realizing like this is my fault.
- 48:01Oh my god. And it's just the first time this kid understands the consequences
- 48:09of starting shit, that it's not always just you that gets hurt. And
- 48:14if you're only worried about your own pride and your own like, you're going
- 48:19to be getting in fights constantly with people who do not matter. And the
- 48:23only time that it is worthwhile is when it's your friends getting threatened. So
- 48:30back in the present, Loofy vomits up the map, but is much more
- 48:37intent on getting his hat than the map, so he's going after that,
- 48:40while Buggy goes over and gets the tube with the map in it and is
- 48:45really feeling himself. But this is when Zorro and Nami come out and he's
- 48:51like, where are the rest of my crew? And Zorro says they're not
- 48:55here, and it comes at him with his sword and everything he does,
- 49:05of course, doesn't work because he already sliced up, and Bucky just yells
- 49:12at him surprise, shit hit. When I tell you, I howled,
- 49:23I howled. I was watching this with Owen and both of us like lost
- 49:29it for a second. This show has more swearing than I was expecting,
- 49:32which I personally like, you guys know, I'm a big fan of swearing,
- 49:37and there are times where it can be overdone or used as a crutch
- 49:40when you're not otherwise actually funny. But surprise, shithead was. It was
- 49:47just such a perfect thing to say because Zorro just does not get caught off
- 49:54guard often, and it just felt like he was getting to crow about something
- 50:00for the first time in a way that like, I bet Zorro has only
- 50:07like could count on one hand the number of times that somebody has made him
- 50:09stop and go what the fuck and really not know what to do next.
- 50:14So we then get the fight scene where Lufi has you know, managed to
- 50:21like gather himself after watching his friends getting absolutely fucking pummeled the both of them.
- 50:29I mean, it's a bad scene for a little while as Buggy's parts
- 50:32go flying around all over the place. It's really really good like the effects,
- 50:38I think, and the way it's done. I don't know how if
- 50:49I had tried to imagine how this would be done, I don't think that
- 50:52I would have expected being such a literal copy of the way his power works
- 50:59with a live act would have worked very well. And it does somehow.
- 51:06I love when he looks up at Lufy's someone escaped my tank of doom ah.
- 51:15So that's is when Lufy is like nam the crates and we get the
- 51:22best part, which is to say, Buggy keeps trying to fight and his
- 51:31parts keep flying around, and Nami begins to direct his parts into the crates
- 51:39and slam the lid down, and Loofy is catching them as they're flying by
- 51:45and sending them toward her. Zoro is spearing a couple of them, which
- 51:51I keep forgetting that, like when Buggy's like struck with a sword, whether
- 51:58or not that body part is canted to his main body at that time does
- 52:04not matter. He still feels pain, and I often forget that. So
- 52:08yeah, all of his parts get you know, just sequestered, and he
- 52:16begins to we get the tiny Minnie Buggy of his just head right on his
- 52:23ankles with his hands just standing out on the sides. I never thought I
- 52:30would get to see this. This looks so weird, and rightfully they have
- 52:36the uh spotlight coming from behind him so that he is very deep in shadow.
- 52:45And thus as much as this looks weird, because it can't not look
- 52:50weird, they have lit it in I think the perfect way to get something
- 52:54as absurd as this to work at all, because I don't know what you
- 53:00would do again with something like this in daylight, like forget it. It
- 53:05only works in extreme shadow like this. So this is when Lufy does the
- 53:13gum gum pistol and or does he do bazooka ah, And he sends sorry,
- 53:22Lufy bazuka, yes, gumgum bazooka, and he sends Buggy right through
- 53:27the outside of the tent and that's the end of that for right now.
- 53:31Buggy's not dead, but he's out of the loop for a little bit.
- 53:37So of course they've got to like release all of the people who are chained
- 53:44up here. And one of them asks, are you our new captors?
- 53:50And Lufy's like what, and he says, well, you're pirates, right,
- 53:54And Lufy's like, oh, I'm a different kind of pirate. And
- 53:59now he looks up him looking like actually a little startled because it's obvious she
- 54:06does not think there's other types of pirates. She has said so more than
- 54:07once, and he's proving, hm, no, there are different types.
- 54:13And I'm not doing that. These people can just go rebuild their poor town,
- 54:17and I should mention like the dude with the crazy wig is the same
- 54:22one that had the dog. I was wondering if they were going to do
- 54:25the thing with a dog. Kind of glad that they didn't, because that
- 54:29broke my heart. And I don't think I could handle it now that I
- 54:30own a dog, seeing it done in live action with the real dog,
- 54:34I just I couldn't. I don't think. I don't think I could do
- 54:37it. It would just be so sad, you guys. But when we
- 54:45jump back over to the base, the Marine Base, Morgan is strung up
- 54:52on one of those those crosses outside and Garb is talking about this unending war
- 55:00against piracy, We're not fighting the right battle. We can take their ships,
- 55:06we can take their weapons and even their lives, but we cannot win
- 55:09if we do not take away their dreams. And this is why I am
- 55:15personally leading a mission to hunt down the pirates who attacked this base, and
- 55:22I'm taking this squadron of new cadets with me. Together, we will show
- 55:25these pirates and all pirates that there are consequences for their actions, and we
- 55:34are that consequence. And I'm really not sure if I imagined it, but
- 55:40I could have sworn. When hel Mepo sees his father strung up that he
- 55:44smirks a little for a second. It seems like he gets control of his
- 55:47face pretty quickly. But for a moment I was like, oh, he's
- 55:51kind of happy about this. Oh yeah, they do have the little dog
- 55:57running past his feet. I didn't even notice the dog. There is a
- 56:00dog there, it's just that they don't do that storyline. Oh I didn't
- 56:05even notice the little dog is here. Oh look at him. He's so
- 56:08scraggly. So this is when the townspeople attempt to give them some food,
- 56:14and Loofy and the rest are just like, you need this a lot more
- 56:16than us. It's fine. And instead of clean walking away like he intended
- 56:23to, obviously, he has a moment where he's like well and he turns
- 56:28back and like grabs something for the road, which is only correct. Lufy
- 56:32would have to write. So let me get the scene where young Loofy and
- 56:38Shank's part and he's given the hat. It's excellent acting. It's really sweet,
- 56:45and this kid like talking about how he's going to have the best crew,
- 56:51and Shanks is like moved by it, as you know, whenever as
- 56:54an adult. You hear a kid talking about what they're going to achieve in
- 56:59life, there's just such a sense of possibility, and it's very poignant because
- 57:05you remember your time of life, you know, when everything stretched out before
- 57:09you, and it can be very bittersweet. It can be simultaneously like look
- 57:16how far I've come and also like, oh, there's so many other things
- 57:19that could have done, you know, But this is the point where I
- 57:24am not sure if I have to take it all back or what. When
- 57:29he takes his hat off and gives it to Loofy, I could swear that
- 57:35that's Shanks's real hair under that hat. Now I may be wrong about that,
- 57:43and it may be a straight up wig. But when the hat isn't
- 57:47on, his hair looks almost normal. It's like, actually, maybe that's
- 57:54fine. I can't get over how much worse it looks the fucking hat on,
- 58:01Like I don't know if they just put color over it, because what
- 58:06it kind of looks like to me due to how peaci it is is a
- 58:15colored wax, a colored palmade that I have tried a couple of times on
- 58:19my own hair, And because it's a palmade, it causes your hair to
- 58:24clump, so it's really great, especially on like black hair. Rashan has
- 58:30used it on her dreads that colored wax and it looks awesome. But when
- 58:36you've got finer hair, it just makes it look really greasy and like you
- 58:42need a shower. So I can't tell if they just used a kind of
- 58:46colored palmade on a guy who has otherwise got like blonde hair and that's why
- 58:54it looks so fucking scraggly, or if this is just a wig that's not
- 59:00done super well. It was hard for me to tell. I just want
- 59:05to register my shock at what a difference it made when he was not wearing
- 59:10the hat and I wasn't. Last episode I said that like Shanks was not
- 59:16really giving what I wanted from him. I'm starting to take that back.
- 59:22I liked him a lot better this episode than the first one. Still not
- 59:28quite the swagger that I'm looking for, But honestly, I think in my
- 59:32imagination Redshanks in the anime has more swagger than he actually does. I think
- 59:40that swaggersh is not actually his thing, and I sort of think of it
- 59:45as being his thing simply because I consider him a badass. So maybe this
- 59:51is better than I am, you know, giving it credit for in my
- 59:57head. So something. Back to the present, Namy has repaired Lufy's hat
- 1:00:05and he is talking about how Shanks always said, if the path you chose
- 1:00:09seems too easy, then you're on the wrong path. And Zoro says,
- 1:00:14this Shanks guy sounds all right. I just once again have to register cheekbones.
- 1:00:23Oh my god, for days, I swear to God, get a
- 1:00:28hold of yourself, Natasha. Every time Zoro is on screen, I'm just
- 1:00:34like Jesus. So this ends with Lufy pointing ahead and saying to the grand
- 1:00:40line before we cut for our final moment to me pulling a floorboard out of
- 1:00:50the floor of like the kitchen area in the boat, and she pulls out
- 1:00:58a tiny little nail transponder and tells someone you can tell him that I've got
- 1:01:06the map and I love in the brackets. Dramatic music plays and she takes
- 1:01:15the year piece out puts it away. Credits. So yeah, so that's
- 1:01:22the end of the episode. I really am enjoying this so much so far,
- 1:01:28you guys, I'm so excited. I Owen was like after we watched
- 1:01:32this, he was like, I'm so mad that they are nailing this show
- 1:01:37so hard, and they fucked up Cowboy Bebop so bad because he loves Cowboy
- 1:01:43Bebop like that's his anime, you know, And he was so excited and
- 1:01:50he didn't even watch any of it. The reviews were so bad that he
- 1:01:53didn't want to be saddened by watching it and being as upset as everyone he
- 1:02:00knew seemed to be, so he just has never watched it. And I
- 1:02:07understand what he means. You know, this can just be a thing where
- 1:02:12it's like people around you seem to be getting like, you know, things
- 1:02:19just seem to be working out for their series, their fandoms in a way
- 1:02:22it didn't for years, and you're just like, god, damn it.
- 1:02:25So anyway, I got to wrap this one up, but thank you guys
- 1:02:30so much for hanging out with me. I appreciate you all so much,
- 1:02:32and thank you again Gabby for commissioning this. Until next time to Lulu Motherfus.
- 1:03:10That was an Unspoiled Network podcast.
