  Speaker 1: good morning. So what are we when you say non
• 0:21
  Speaker 1: tariff trade barriers? What are you talking about specifically and

  Speaker 1: which countries?

  Speaker 2: Well, so, non tariff barriers are things like inspections or
• 0:29
  Speaker 2: environmental requirements or paperwork requirements, and sometimes those measures they
• 0:34
  Speaker 2: serve a really important purpose. They're make sure that food
• 0:36
  Speaker 2: is safe to eat. But when they're not science based
• 0:39
  Speaker 2: or transparent, then actually they are just a barrier and
• 0:42
  Speaker 2: a cost to trade. And you know that adds on certainty,
• 0:46
  Speaker 2: It adds cost for both farmers and exporters. So you
• 0:49
  Speaker 2: know this report highlights one point five billion dollars a
• 0:52
  Speaker 2: year is what those non tariff barriers are costing our sector.

  Speaker 1: And which country.

  Speaker 2: So it's really broadly spread. Actually, there's no sort of
• 1:04
  Speaker 2: one particular one that sticks out, and I think the
• 1:07
  Speaker 2: whole purpose of This report is just to highlight those

  Speaker 2: areas that can be worked on.

  Speaker 1: Are they using them because if if they're really broaden

  Speaker 1: everyone does it. I mean, are they using them on
• 1:17
  Speaker 1: purpose to try and restrict trade when they can't do tariffs?

  Speaker 1: Is that what you're saying?

  Speaker 2: There is absolutely an aspect of that. Yes, So you

  Speaker 2: know what this report, this reports entitled Barriers to trade,

  Speaker 2: So it looks at that both the tariffs and the
• 1:32
  Speaker 2: non tariff barriers that we're facing. And you know, a
• 1:35
  Speaker 2: ten point four billion dollar sector is what the red
• 1:38
  Speaker 2: meat industry is worth, So you know one point five
• 1:40
  Speaker 2: billion is significant.

  Speaker 1: Yeah, no, no doubt it's significant. How hard will it
• 1:45
  Speaker 1: be to try and get you know, all these disparate
• 1:47
  Speaker 1: different countries with a myriad different regulations around inspections, et cetera.

  Speaker 1: How hard is it to try and get them all
• 1:53
  Speaker 1: to change? There is based on what probably is a
• 1:56
  Speaker 1: subjective view, is it not. You know, we might think

  Speaker 1: that their inspections are over zealous, but they, on the
• 2:03
  Speaker 1: other hand might think that they're just fine. And we
• 2:05
  Speaker 1: have quite strict you know, environmental and biosecurity standards in
• 2:08
  Speaker 1: New Zealand too.

  Speaker 2: Look, we absolutely do and you know, we work very
• 2:13
  Speaker 2: closely with the ministryes for Primary Industries and Ministry for
• 2:16
  Speaker 2: Foreign Affairs and Trade and just to make sure that
• 2:19
  Speaker 2: any of those requirements that we're facing going into those
• 2:22
  Speaker 2: countries are science based. And you know, this report actually
• 2:25
  Speaker 2: is quite helpful for them to identify where those hot
• 2:28
  Speaker 2: spots are. And I think I heard yesterday that the
• 2:31
  Speaker 2: Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is working on one
• 2:33
  Speaker 2: hundred and ninety four different non tariff barriers across the
• 2:36
  Speaker 2: world that our sector faces. So you know, it is
• 2:38
  Speaker 2: a big issue and the highlights it's.
