- 0:00Chapter 23 from the book of Jeremiah as we always start with
- 0:06now a reminder from second Timothy chapter 3 verse
- 0:11beginning with verse 16. We This is why we read
- 0:14scripture. All Scripture is God breathed
- 0:17and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and
- 0:21training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be
- 0:26thoroughly equipped for every good work.
- 0:30So we'll start here. Dear Lord, please let the Holy
- 0:33Spirit open our eyes and ears to hear what you have to say
- 0:37through your prophet Jeremiah to us today.
- 0:40We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. So Jeremiah is threatened with
- 0:45death early in the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah king of
- 0:52Judah, The word came to came from the Lord.
- 0:57This is what the Lord says. Stand in the courtyard of the
- 1:01Lord's house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah
- 1:05who come to worship in the House of the Lord.
- 1:08Tell them everything I command you.
- 1:11Do not omit a word. Perhaps they will listen and
- 1:17each will turn from their evil ways.
- 1:20Then I will relent and not inflict on them the disaster I
- 1:26was planning because of the evil they have done.
- 1:32So this statement from God to Jeremiah is it gives us a lot of
- 1:37insight about God. First of all, He's warning he
- 1:42did this like all of Jeremiah is like a warning to people, but
- 1:45that people don't listen and he's and he tells us the intent
- 1:52or he tells Jeremiah the intent of why he's having Jeremiah say
- 1:59these things. He said perhaps they will
- 2:01listen. So God is so patient with
- 2:05people. He keeps coming after them over
- 2:08and over again, and he wants them to listen to his servant
- 2:14Jeremiah, and he is hopeful that each will turn from their evil
- 2:22ways. So we always have to remember
- 2:25that God is just and that God calls us to be holy as He is
- 2:32holy. He is our Father, He is our
- 2:34Creator. He wants us to be holy like Him,
- 2:38so he wants us to depart from the evil ways.
- 2:41So this applies to us today. It's not just to the people of
- 2:44Israel, but this truth found in the book of Jeremiah regarding
- 2:50the people of Israel does apply to us today that he wants us to
- 2:54turn from our evil ways. And then here's what he says.
- 2:58If if people turn from their evil ways, then I will relent
- 3:02and not inflict on them the disaster I was planning because
- 3:08of the evil they have done. So of course God is sovereign
- 3:13over things. But here we see that God was
- 3:16planning to send disaster, but he says why?
- 3:21Because of the evil they have done.
- 3:24So this is where we have to remind ourselves that God is
- 3:29just. So if justice were to prevail,
- 3:34we would all suffer, we would all punish, be punished in that
- 3:40way because of the sin in our lives.
- 3:45So if God just put forth justice, every one of us would
- 3:50have bad things happen to us just because God is righteous
- 3:56and we are not righteous. However, the Holy Spirit changes
- 4:01us and makes us into more righteous people.
- 4:04But this is just so insightful to read this and to think about
- 4:11it in our own lives that maybe there's some disaster that's
- 4:16going to come about if we remain in our evil ways.
- 4:22Evil would be the things that are talked about in the Bible
- 4:25that God does not. He tells us not to do.
- 4:30So if we're doing sinful things knowingly, then it does say like
- 4:36if we keep on sinning, there is no sacrifice that remains us in
- 4:42Hebrews 1026, but only the fear of judgement and wrath of God
- 4:49because on the enemies. So we're considered an enemy if
- 4:53we deliberately, if we deliberately disobey.
- 4:57That reminds me of a quote from The Lion King.
- 5:00But if we, if we deliberately disobey, God will at some point
- 5:08he's going to bring about justice.
- 5:10God can have mercy on whom he wants to have mercy.
- 5:15So he can withhold his judgement for a period of time, but
- 5:19eventually it's going to happen. Now, I don't know none of us,
- 5:24none of us are God. None of us know how long God
- 5:27gives each of us to repent, to turn from our evil ways.
- 5:32But He is patient with some. And the other thing is God knows
- 5:37our heart desires or what our heart desires, and especially if
- 5:43we get too involved in something evil, God, I mean God can
- 5:48foresee these things. He knows where we are on our
- 5:51path. He but He allows us to have the
- 5:56free will that we have because without free will we are unable
- 6:02to love. We can't choose love.
- 6:05So if we were a robot and we were programmed to love God
- 6:09back, that wouldn't be real love.
- 6:12Real love is when you have a choice not to love, but you
- 6:16choose to love instead. So this is what God wants to see
- 6:21from us. Like if He leaves us to
- 6:22ourselves, will we respond to him or will we remain obstinate
- 6:29to Him? And will we just, you know, push
- 6:32him away or will we love? That's what our time here on
- 6:35earth is showing God. Do we love him or do we not love
- 6:40him? And again, we have to keep in
- 6:43mind that God represents righteousness and justice.
- 6:47So when bad things come upon us, it's it's really justified.
- 6:53Like if God allows that to happen, it's justified.
- 6:58So anyway, let's the goal is repentance.
- 7:00The goal, though, through troubles that God allows to
- 7:04happen. Those troubles are for God uses
- 7:10those evil things. The evil comes from people are
- 7:17entities that rebel against God that don't want God.
- 7:21So God can use those people's are are beings desires for his
- 7:28ultimately for his purpose. He can bring about tragedy on a
- 7:32person. And sometimes when we hit rock
- 7:34bottom is when we turn to God. So those are the things, those
- 7:37are the ways that I've seen that God will use evil for,
- 7:41ultimately for good. If someone gets saved after
- 7:45going through really hard times, that turns into good because
- 7:48they will inherit the Kingdom of God, what God has prepared.
- 7:52So there will ultimately be good that comes from it.
- 7:57So going back to what Jeremiah, what God was saying to Jeremiah
- 8:01say to them, this is what the Lord says.
- 8:04If you do not listen to Me and follow My law which I have set
- 8:09before you, and if you do not listen to the words of My
- 8:16servants, the prophets whom I have sent to you again and
- 8:21again, though you have not listened, then I will make the
- 8:26house like Shiloh and this city a curse among the nations of the
- 8:31earth. So God's laying it out.
- 8:34He's like, you know, you have to obey.
- 8:36If you don't obey, if you don't turn to me, you don't listen to
- 8:39the prophets that I'm sending to you.
- 8:41There's destruction coming. So the study Bible says what was
- 8:46Shiloh like? Shiloh was completely destroyed
- 8:50by the Philistines about 1050 BC.
- 8:54The terrible irony was that Shiloh was the 1st place the Ark
- 8:59of the Covenant had rested in the Promised Land.
- 9:02It had been the center of worship in the days of Eli, the
- 9:07High Priest. The prophet Samuel had received
- 9:10his call from God at Shiloh. Now the gutted and empty city
- 9:17was a vivid reminder that past spiritual glories were no
- 9:23insurance against God's wrath. That's something we should all
- 9:27remember. And I can't even apply this to
- 9:30the United States. The United States was 1 nation
- 9:33under God and you know the things that within the United
- 9:38States are doing that are against God, against what God
- 9:43commands will bring wrath on the United States.
- 9:49It's very clear God doesn't change.
- 9:51He is the same yesterday, history and in the future.
- 9:57And we can all learn from what Jeremiah is going through.
- 10:02We can all learn that we need to change from our evil ways, from
- 10:07our sinful ways that are rebellious to God.
- 10:11We need to be on God's good side.
- 10:13We need to repent. We need to change our ways and
- 10:17obey God and trust in Him. And then perhaps maybe some of
- 10:22the things that were going to be coming on us, coming against us
- 10:27as a result of judgment, maybe those things will not happen.
- 10:33Maybe God will have mercy when we truly repent.
- 10:36So I think this is really applicable to us today.
- 10:41Going back to Scripture, the priests and the prophets and all
- 10:45the people heard Jeremiah speak these words in the House of the
- 10:49Lord. But as soon as Jeremiah finished
- 10:52telling all the people everything the Lord had
- 10:53commanded to him to say, the priests, the prophets, and all
- 10:57the people seized him and said, you must die.
- 11:03Why do you prophecy in the Lord's name that this house will
- 11:08be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted,
- 11:13and all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the House of
- 11:17the Lord? We're going to see a lot of
- 11:19God's Providence as we finish out this chapter and continue
- 11:23reading. So when the officials of Judah
- 11:28heard about these things, they went up from the royal palace to
- 11:32the House of the Lord and took their places at the entrance of
- 11:36the new gate of the Lord's house.
- 11:38Then the priest and the prophets said to the officials and all
- 11:42the people, this man should be sentenced to death because he
- 11:46has prophesied against the city. You have heard it with your own
- 11:50ears. So when I read this, I was
- 11:53thinking, OK, they don't like bad news, and so they resist it.
- 11:58And that's the same today. Like we don't want any news
- 12:01about God's judgement, so we resist it.
- 12:05And then I thought about like, well, what law were they
- 12:08applying to say that he needed to die?
- 12:12Like, what did he do that would get all these people to say this
- 12:17Jeremiah the prophet needs to die?
- 12:19Well, our study Bible says something about that.
- 12:21Why were the people so upset? The people may have suspected
- 12:25that Jeremiah was a false prophet.
- 12:28Who else would predict that the Temple would be destroyed?
- 12:31That he did so in the name of the Lord made him guilty of
- 12:34blasphemy. In their minds, that's the same
- 12:37thing that they accused Jesus of was blasphemy.
- 12:42Other false prophets and Judah's religious leaders had assured
- 12:47the people of God's continued blessing and protection.
- 12:52So again, think about this like if somebody saying they're a
- 12:55prophet and they're saying peace and safety, peace and security,
- 13:01they're probably a false prophet because Jesus said that war will
- 13:06continue after war and rumors of war.
- 13:10There's going to be all these things that happen until he
- 13:13returns. Until Jesus returns, we're not
- 13:16going to have peace and safety and security.
- 13:19And you do hear that that is the desire of many nations currently
- 13:25because of what's happening in the Middle East.
- 13:27So pay attention because and see what happens.
- 13:31Watch what happens because it's not necessarily assured and
- 13:37where, how do people know that it's going to be peace and
- 13:39safety? Because the Bible doesn't say
- 13:41that. The Bible prophecy doesn't say
- 13:43there's going to be peace and safety.
- 13:45It does say there's going to be a false peace.
- 13:48It's going to surprise the people who believed it was peace
- 13:52and there would come sudden destruction.
- 13:54So if we are seeing this and all of a sudden, if we see this on a
- 13:57global level of people feeling this peace and security, we
- 14:02really better be right with God because it says sudden
- 14:07destruction. And if we're not right with God,
- 14:11whatever, when, when Jesus returns, wherever we are in our
- 14:15places with God, you know, if we haven't repented because it says
- 14:20when he returns that people, they could, they could repent,
- 14:23but they chose not to, probably because of all the the bad
- 14:26things that were happening. Because bad things can make
- 14:29people turn away from God and foolishly to do so because it
- 14:34would be better for them if they actually repented.
- 14:37And maybe the bad things would not be as bad.
- 14:42Maybe God would remove them from happening.
- 14:46There's a lot of things that God could do in his mercy.
- 14:50But people like want to hear good things.
- 14:54They don't want to hear bad things.
- 14:57So the people were accustomed to hearing words they wanted to
- 15:01hear and could not tolerate Jeremiah's message of calamity
- 15:06and judgment. So today, let us not be like the
- 15:10people of Israel, of Judah back then, who couldn't tolerate this
- 15:18judgmental God. He's a righteous God like we can
- 15:22all. It's really interesting because
- 15:24if it's against us, we don't want it to happen.
- 15:27But if somebody wronged us, then we want judgment against that
- 15:31person. So we, we apply different, I
- 15:37guess, ways of looking at things.
- 15:39It depends. Like if it's against us, we
- 15:41don't want it. If it's against someone who's
- 15:44wronged us, Oh, yeah, you know, there should be judgment.
- 15:47But we need to remember that, you know, we need to forgive
- 15:52people who have done wrong to us.
- 15:55And God is, I mean, God, that's what God calls us to do, is to
- 16:02let that go. Let God, let God bring about
- 16:07judgment, vengeance. The vengeance is God's, it's not
- 16:10ours. So we just need to turn it over
- 16:13to God. And God is just, He is
- 16:15righteous. He will, He might delay in
- 16:19bringing about judgment if somebody has been wronged, but
- 16:22his delay is with the hopes that just like us, if we've repented,
- 16:27they too might repent. So we have to appreciate that
- 16:32God allows us to repent, that he gives us forgiveness, that he
- 16:37has mercy on us, and even though we were against God, that He
- 16:45still forgives us and will let us be in His Kingdom when we
- 16:50repent and trust in Him, when we trust in Jesus.
- 16:54So it's, it's, it's so important to understand these things.
- 17:00And when you and when we read these things from the BC era, we
- 17:04see that God hasn't changed. He's still the same.
- 17:08So then Jeremiah said to all the officials and the people, the
- 17:11Lord sent me to prophecy against this house and the city and all
- 17:17the things you have done. Now reform your ways and your
- 17:21actions and obey the Lord your God.
- 17:26So he's saying repent, repent and obey.
- 17:30And then he's giving them hope. Next he says, then the Lord will
- 17:35relent and not bring the disaster he pronounced against
- 17:40you. So there's hope.
- 17:42If you do this, you could lessen the disaster that's coming.
- 17:47As for me, I am in your hands. Do with me whatever you think is
- 17:53good and right. Be assured, however, that if you
- 17:59put me to death, you will bring the guilt of innocent blood on
- 18:04yourselves and on the city and on those who live in it.
- 18:09For in truth, the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these
- 18:16words in your hearing. So that kind of probably did
- 18:21make people pause for a minute and reflect, like, do they want
- 18:26more judgement on them? Is he innocent?
- 18:29So the study Bible said, how did Jeremiah talk the officials and
- 18:32all the people out of killing him?
- 18:35Jeremiah's words had a ring of truth.
- 18:39While the people and officials recognized this, the priest and
- 18:43the false prophets, who had apparently become calloused to
- 18:47the true word of the Lord, did not.
- 18:50Jeremiah demonstrated A sincerity that his religious
- 18:55rivals did not have and was willing to die for his
- 19:01commitment to the truth. God honored Jeremiah for saying
- 19:07what he had to be said, regardless of the cost.
- 19:12And God intervened to change the minds of the officials and the
- 19:17people in the crowd. So Jeremiah's obedience to God
- 19:23was blessed. So God did rescue him.
- 19:30Now this will start to tell us in the remaining paragraphs.
- 19:34It will tell us like how this happened, how this came about.
- 19:38Then the officials and all the people said to the priest and
- 19:41the prophets, this man should not be sentenced to death.
- 19:45He has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God.
- 19:50Some of the elders of the land stepped forward and said to the
- 19:55entire assembly of the people. Now this is again showing the
- 20:00importance. For people to speak up because
- 20:05it says some of the elders of the land step forward.
- 20:09Not everybody did. But look at when we speak up for
- 20:12something, it may make a difference when we have
- 20:15something factual to back up our statements and which these
- 20:21elders did. So listen to what they suggest
- 20:24to the people who are saying he should.
- 20:26Jeremiah should die. This is what they say.
- 20:29Micah of Morcheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah, king of
- 20:35Judah. He told all the people of Judah,
- 20:38this is what the Lord Almighty says.
- 20:41Zion will be plowed like a field.
- 20:43Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the Temple hill a mound
- 20:50overgrown with thickets. So if we go to Micah chapter 3,
- 20:57verse 12, this is what it says. Therefore, because of you, Zion
- 21:02will be plowed like a field. Jerusalem will become a heap of
- 21:05rubble, the temple hill, a mound overgrown with thickets,
- 21:09thickets. So that's where that, you know,
- 21:11the elders were knowledgeable about what it says.
- 21:14And Micah was a prophet who served like 735 to 700 BC.
- 21:22So this is like almost 100 years before Jeremiah.
- 21:25Jeremiah was, his timing was 626 to 585 BC.
- 21:32And then Hezekiah's period where he spared Micah, he was
- 21:37somewhere around, you know, after 710 or just before 710 BC
- 21:44and just a little bit later than 690 BC.
- 21:48So that was when his reign was. So Micah was speaking during
- 21:53Hezekiah's reign, but it was hundreds of years before
- 21:58Jeremiah. And Jeremiah is saying the same
- 22:00thing. Pause for a minute and think
- 22:02about that. Like God was warning them for
- 22:06like 100 years almost that this was coming and how patient God
- 22:14was 100 years like a person's generation.
- 22:17He kept warning like throughout a whole generation.
- 22:20I think it said Jeremiah had come been prophesying to the
- 22:24people for 23 years. So look at how patient was like
- 22:28the people are hearing the same thing over and over and they're
- 22:31like, oh, you know, it's never going to happen because he keeps
- 22:33saying it. But some people apparently
- 22:38believe and listen and turn to God and then they're spared.
- 22:42And that's the same thing today with the things that are
- 22:44happening in the world. There's lots of people that I'm
- 22:47seeing in social media who are saying the same thing, like
- 22:51Jeremiah. They're saying we need to
- 22:53repent. We need to turn back to God.
- 22:55We need to get serious with our faith.
- 22:57We need to quit being lukewarm people, lukewarm Christians, or
- 23:03you know, baby Christians. We need to mature our faith.
- 23:06We need to be obedient to God. We need to trust in Him.
- 23:10We need to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 23:14All those things are true to us today.
- 23:17And you know our people listening to it.
- 23:22Some are, some aren't, but you know it.
- 23:25And we don't know how much more time God's going to give us, but
- 23:30it feels very much like the same kind of setting as these days
- 23:36right before destruction. It really feels like that.
- 23:40And there's a lot of people that are feeling like that.
- 23:42And a lot of people, you know, on the other side don't want to
- 23:46hear it because nobody wants to hear bad news.
- 23:50Nobody wants to hear about destruction.
- 23:51Nobody wants to hear about judgement.
- 23:55And we shouldn't, you know, live in this like, like, shouldn't, I
- 24:00guess it's not enjoyable to live in a very negative state like
- 24:04that. However, if you repent, change
- 24:08your ways, get close to God, live in the joy that God brings
- 24:12to your life, God will start bringing blessings into your
- 24:16life. Even if other things are, you
- 24:18know, weird in the world. There will be these like joyful
- 24:21moments and these good moments in life that we can appreciate.
- 24:27And that's really all God is after is a change of heart
- 24:32inside of us, turning us towards Him and leaning on Him.
- 24:37Or you know, relying on him is the better way to say it.
- 24:40Probably relying on Him like we would a good father.
- 24:45He is a good father, He is our Creator, He is our dad, and He
- 24:50wants to give good gifts. He gives better gifts than any
- 24:53human being. And we need to know that God, if
- 24:57we don't believe that right now, that that is who he is, that is
- 25:01who he is. And the more that we are in the
- 25:03Word of God, the more we will see that God is like that.
- 25:07God is loving, God is love, and he gives good gifts.
- 25:12So again, these elders point out, hey, remember Micah during
- 25:17Hezekiah and he was prophesying this stuff.
- 25:21Now here's what it said. Did Hezekiah, king of Judah or
- 25:24anyone else in in Judah put him to death?
- 25:28Did not Hezekiah fear the Lord and seek his favor?
- 25:33And did not the Lord relent so that he did not bring disaster?
- 25:39He pronounced against them? We are about to bring terrible
- 25:44disaster on ourselves. So somebody had some wisdom from
- 25:48God and spoke up and said, hey everybody, remember Micah,
- 25:53remember Hezekiah? Hezekiah didn't kill him.
- 25:58And then now Uriah, son of Shemaiah from Kiriath, Jerome,
- 26:03was another man who prophesied in the name of the Lord.
- 26:06He prophesied the same things. So now this is the third one.
- 26:11And God kind of does these things in threes if you pay
- 26:15attention to it sometimes, like if it's something important, God
- 26:18will do it in threes. So he prophesied the same things
- 26:23against the city in this land as Jeremiah did.
- 26:26So you've got Micah, Jeremiah, and Uriah all saying the same
- 26:32things. When King Jehoiah, Jehoiah Kim,
- 26:37and all his officers and officials heard his words, the
- 26:40king was determined to put him to death.
- 26:44But Uriah heard of it and fled in fear to Egypt.
- 26:50Now that was a mistake because Uriah, if he was prophesying in
- 26:54the name of the Lord about these things and telling where did he
- 26:57go, he fled in fear. God tells us His spirit is not a
- 27:01spirit of fear. So he became fearful.
- 27:06He started trusting in man rather than trusting in God, and
- 27:12he fled in fear to Egypt. It doesn't say he consulted God
- 27:17and said God because God, you know, should I go somewhere
- 27:20else? Because we can also see how God
- 27:23LED. We're going to talk about Jesus
- 27:25jumping forward about Joseph and Mary and Jesus and the Angel of
- 27:33the Lord came to Joseph, I believe it was in a dream and
- 27:36told him, you know, to go, you know, to avoid the place where
- 27:42Herod was killing all the babies.
- 27:45So God kept their family safe during that time and, and he
- 27:54communicated, I mean, this is the Son of God.
- 27:56So he's protecting him. Of course, his, his will, God's
- 27:59will is sovereign, sovereign and will prevail.
- 28:04But think about this like God can give direction.
- 28:07I want you to go here to for protection or he can say, no,
- 28:12you need to stay right where you are and I will protect you.
- 28:15You don't see all the spiritual angels who are around you that
- 28:20are protecting you. So God can protect you in place.
- 28:24He can also tell you you need to go somewhere.
- 28:26So that's why it's really important for us to know the
- 28:30word of God, to recognize the word of God, and to pause before
- 28:36we do something to consult God and say, God, what do you want
- 28:40me to do here? Because God may have a different
- 28:43message for everybody. So it's so important that we
- 28:47have that communication, that personal communication with God.
- 28:52God can affirm the things that we think are from God through
- 28:58other people. And sometimes God will affirm it
- 29:02three times and then you kind of know when 3 different people who
- 29:06are God honoring people say the same thing that you just
- 29:11believed that was what you got from God.
- 29:15That to me is confirmation. When you hear it from different
- 29:18sources, but you hear the same thing.
- 29:20God works through people. That's another reason why we
- 29:23need community of people, community of believers, those
- 29:26who are close to to Christ so that we can discern, unlike
- 29:33these prophets that they're talking about in the Bible.
- 29:36They couldn't discern. They were so far from God that
- 29:40and they were probably doing idolatry and worshipping bail
- 29:43and stuff like that. They could be getting words from
- 29:45bail words from the evil one that were saying, hey, this is
- 29:50Jerusalem. You are in safety, you are in
- 29:53God's place, you know, and it all sounds good and everybody
- 29:57wants to believe that, but the ones who are hearing this are
- 30:02far from God. That's another reason why we
- 30:04have to look at the fruit of a of the spirit found within
- 30:08people who are, you know, maybe saying stuff to us or it's
- 30:15really important to know the the true way somebody is because
- 30:21somebody can say all the words and have scripture memorized.
- 30:25That's what Satan did. He quoted Scripture to Jesus,
- 30:28you know, so they could be Satan and quote Scripture, but do they
- 30:32live it out? That's where spiritual
- 30:34discernment is. If they live it out, the fruit
- 30:37of the Spirit will be evident, the resulting character of the
- 30:42person will be seen, and it'll be clear what spirit is leading
- 30:49them. Galatians chapter 5 is where you
- 30:54find the fruit of the spirit and the characteristics to look to
- 30:58see if someone is being led by God's Spirit or if they're being
- 31:02led by some worldly spiritual being.
- 31:07So King Jehoiakim, however, sent El Nathan, son of Abcor to Egypt
- 31:15along with some other men. They brought Uriah out of Egypt
- 31:19and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with the
- 31:23sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common
- 31:28people. So Uriah fled in fear of man.
- 31:34He didn't rely on God and guess what happened to him?
- 31:39The evil king. This was the king of Judah,
- 31:42Jehoiakim. But he did evil in God's eyes.
- 31:45So he went and tracked him down, haunted him down and then killed
- 31:49him. So it said, how could Oh,
- 31:54there's one more sentence and then this chapter concludes.
- 31:58Furthermore, Ahiya Kim, son of Shafan, supported Jeremiah, and
- 32:05so he was not handed over to the people to be put to get put to
- 32:10death. The Study Bible will address
- 32:11that. So let's read the last two
- 32:14questions and answers from the Study Bible and it will conclude
- 32:17this chapter. So how could a prophet's
- 32:21execution be justified? Uriah was likely executed on
- 32:26grounds of treason. Like Jeremiah, he predicted
- 32:31coming destruction. Then, when he feared for his
- 32:34life and fled to Egypt, he gave the king an excuse to denounce
- 32:40him as a traitor. Because he was labeled A
- 32:43traitor, Uriah was denied a funeral and a burial befitting
- 32:48of a prophet of the Lord. Jeremiah would have undoubtedly
- 32:52met a similar fate had it not been for God's protection.
- 33:00Why did Ahaya Kim have such political clout?
- 33:07Ahaya Kim Kim had been an official in King Josiah.
- 33:11Now King Josiah was a good king in his court during the last
- 33:16reform. Maybe he was influenced by
- 33:19Josiah. Haya Kim apparently played the
- 33:24role of an elder statesman, maintaining his influence even
- 33:29after Josiah's reign. So maybe he was one of the
- 33:32people that spoke up and was one of the elders and a person
- 33:36speaking up in the support of protection of another.
- 33:40We have to think about that if we are ever put into that
- 33:43position, that we should speak up for what is right, because
- 33:47maybe God put us in that place so that we could be the voice
- 33:52that would protect the person that God wants to protect.
- 33:57So we need to be sensitive to that nudging, that feeling like
- 34:01maybe I should say something and respond to that.
- 34:05If we are protecting someone, we need to do that.
- 34:09So his son Gadalia became governor of Judah after the fall
- 34:14of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Because of Hayakim's political
- 34:18connections and prominence, he was able to protect Jeremiah
- 34:23from those who wanted to end the prophet's life.
- 34:27So this is showing another way how God is sovereign.
- 34:30God used a Hayakim or Kim to protect Jeremiah.
- 34:38And I mean, it's all these things like how God is working.
- 34:41We don't really even understand it fully, but in hindsight, we
- 34:45can see these things like a Haya Kim or a Haya Kim.
- 34:49I don't know how to say his name.
- 34:51He was in King Josiah's court. King Josiah was a righteous 1.
- 34:56So maybe he learned from it. Maybe he contributed to it as
- 34:59well, but somehow he was connected with good.
- 35:02So maybe it was just a Haya Kim was good on his own, but he was
- 35:05also in the presence of Josiah, who was a good king.
- 35:09And and then so God, you know, has all these paths crossing in
- 35:15the past history for this day where Jeremiah is going to be
- 35:22executed because of what God told him he needed to say.
- 35:27But Jeremiah, unlike Uriah, did not run to Egypt for protection.
- 35:33He just said, do what? Do whatever it is to me that you
- 35:36think is right and true and just.
- 35:40But if you kill me, So he knew that was an option.
- 35:44He could have been killed. If you kill me, know that you're
- 35:47going to have innocent blood on your hands and you will get
- 35:52basically judgement or wrath from God for that.
- 35:55So that made them think, do they want to bring that on them?
- 35:59So there's one more thing in the Study Bible, it's in the top 100
- 36:03most asked questions. Does God change his plans based
- 36:07on what we do? Because of our finite capacity
- 36:12for understanding, we struggle to reconcile how God can remain
- 36:16sovereign over all things while giving human beings the freedom
- 36:20to obey him or defy him. See, I don't have a problem.
- 36:26I don't have difficulty in understanding that because if
- 36:31God gives us his choice and we choose poorly, His will will
- 36:39still occur. Like his plans, his goals,
- 36:44everything is still going to happen according to His plan.
- 36:47We don't disrupt that plan, but God can use another person.
- 36:53He can be like, this is kind of OK.
- 36:55So think about Saul, the first king of Israel.
- 37:00He only partially listened to God.
- 37:03He still had his own mind. He would not surrender all of
- 37:07his decisions. He would not be obedient to God
- 37:10fully. So God was like, no, you're not
- 37:12going to stay in this place. And so then God decided David is
- 37:17going to be the next king. And it was, it was a rough go.
- 37:21I mean, it took some time, but God took Saul out of it.
- 37:26And it said that God's spirit left Saul and he sent an evil
- 37:33spirit to torment him. He allowed that to happen.
- 37:39So that's something else that I think about too, is the
- 37:43disobedience had a consequence. And sometimes God turns us over
- 37:47to the things that we pursue. So was Saul listening to the
- 37:51enemy? And then God was like, OK,
- 37:54you're, you're grieving the Holy Spirit and my Spirit's not going
- 37:59to contend with us. I just it's a thought, something
- 38:03to look into and to ponder on and and read more scripture to
- 38:09get clarity on that. So here's what it says in light
- 38:14of this conflict, consider the following statements the Bible
- 38:17makes about God. Number one, we know that God in
- 38:21all things works for the good of those.
- 38:25Now pay attention. He doesn't work for the good for
- 38:27everyone. There's certain qualifications.
- 38:31Those who love him. Now Jesus said if we love him,
- 38:34we will obey him. So obedience is tied into this.
- 38:38If we love him, we will obey Him, and it says who have been
- 38:42called according to his purpose. So when we are living our life
- 38:51according to God's will, he will make He works for the good of
- 38:57those who love him who have been called according to His purpose.
- 39:01I think we like to all say God works for the works, all things
- 39:05for good. That's where I hear people say
- 39:07that a lot, and it's probably why we need to memorize
- 39:10Scripture and because it gives a clarification of that.
- 39:13It's for those who love him, who have been called according to
- 39:18His purpose. So it's somebody who loves him,
- 39:20who's obedient to Him, and doing what He says to do.
- 39:25The apostle Paul did not say that God causes all things.
- 39:28The fact that we have free will means we are able to make our
- 39:31own choices. But whatever we choose, God
- 39:34works in all things to bring about His purpose.
- 39:38So God sometimes uses evil people, evil intentions to bring
- 39:43judgement or to get people to the point of repentance.
- 39:49So He uses our free will to accomplish His ultimate purpose.
- 39:56So that's how God is sovereign and free will can happen at the
- 40:00same time. Many are the plans in a person's
- 40:05heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails.
- 40:09Whether or not we choose to be obedient to God doesn't matter
- 40:13because whatever God wants to happen is going to happen.
- 40:17We can either be with God. Or against God.
- 40:21We could either be for God or against God and it's going to go
- 40:25go much better for us if we are on the same team as God.
- 40:30This proverb reminds us that that our plans cannot thwart
- 40:36God's purpose. So even though we have free
- 40:39choice, we can't disrupt what God actively purposes to do.
- 40:44The Bible never attempts to solve the mysterious tension
- 40:47between God's sovereignty and human responsibility.
- 40:51The Bible assumes both are at work in the events of history.
- 40:56Yet this this much is clear. God never changes as to mislead
- 41:01or lie. He is never caught by surprise.
- 41:05He knows the decisions each person will make, yet in a
- 41:09manner we do not fully understand, His knowledge does
- 41:14not infringe on a individual's freedom before God.
- 41:18So think about this as a parent, if you have children, you can
- 41:22kind of know how your child will respond to something.
- 41:28You're probably we're not like at the same capacity of God
- 41:32where we can know someone's inner thoughts and their hearts
- 41:37desires. But as a parent who's close to
- 41:41their kids, you can, you can, you can kind of guess how your
- 41:46child will react to something and you can usually be right
- 41:50about it. Like this is, I know this is
- 41:52what they're going to do. If this happens occasionally,
- 41:54you'll be wrong because we're not like God.
- 41:57We're not omniscient. I can't say that word.
- 42:01So we, we don't know all things and so we're not, we don't have
- 42:07the benefit that God has and all that.
- 42:09But as a parent, you could just let it play out, like let it let
- 42:15it play out and not force that child to do a certain thing.
- 42:21And you can know that, OK, if I tell them no, they're going to
- 42:25throw a tantrum. But I'm not just going to say
- 42:28yes so that I don't get a tantrum.
- 42:30I'm going to say no and just let that happen and maybe there's a
- 42:34consequence. Then they don't get the thing
- 42:36that they wanted the next time because they threw a tantrum.
- 42:40So that's how God works with us. I think if we put it in the
- 42:42perspective, although it's not a full understanding of how a
- 42:47parent can deal with children, it makes a lot of sense if
- 42:50you've had children. So that's how God is with us.
- 42:55And we, we, we, we can be children of God when we repent
- 42:58and, and turn to him and he's a good father and he's full of
- 43:02love. He just wants us to obey for our
- 43:05good. We have to remember that it's
- 43:07for our good. It's, I think about the 10
- 43:11commandments, like guardrails, like if we obey those 10
- 43:14commandments, there were a lot of there will be things that
- 43:18won't happen to us, bad things that won't happen to us as a
- 43:23result. Because there are consequences
- 43:25of each one of those commandments that if justice is
- 43:30brought about or when justice is brought about, there will be
- 43:33consequences if we break any of those commandments.
- 43:37But if we obey those commandments, we don't have to
- 43:41suffer the consequences of disobey obedience.
- 43:46I hope that makes sense. Anyway, that's enough for today.
- 43:50And that was chapter 26 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 43:53Hope you come back for chapter 27.
