- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Cannas Parker. This is ISO IQ presented by AT
- 0:03Speaker 1: and T. I'm here with Kelsey Plumb KP, That's what
- 0:08Speaker 1: I call her. We're going to be going over what
- 0:11Speaker 1: are her tactics in this one v one unrivaled one
- 0:15Speaker 1: on one tournament, and we're going to be talking through footwork,
- 0:18Speaker 1: through her physicality, through her interior scoring, because we already
- 0:21Speaker 1: know she's a bucket when she catching shoots. So, KP,
- 0:25Speaker 1: what's up? How are you feeling?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Well's up? Canny? Thanks for having me? This is awesome.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I'm excited to break this down.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Well before we get into the one v one format,
- 0:33Speaker 1: I wanted to just first touch on your adjustment this
- 0:36Speaker 1: first season playing three v three full court. We know
- 0:39Speaker 1: you're an Olympic champion, you know, in the half court
- 0:43Speaker 1: Olympic champion in five e five, but this is your
- 0:46Speaker 1: first experience in Miami playing this style of basketball. What
- 0:50Speaker 1: have been your your initial thoughts and what has your
- 0:52Speaker 1: adjustment been?
- 0:53Speaker 3: Like? Yeah, you know, I think when I first got
- 0:55Speaker 3: out there, I realized like, okay, wow, this is even
- 0:57Speaker 3: faster than I thought on TV and more physical. So
- 1:01Speaker 3: just trying to adjust to that and then just trying
- 1:04Speaker 3: to find your sponsorout the game. You know, I think
- 1:06Speaker 3: at times you can get sped up because it is
- 1:08Speaker 3: so fast, just trying to be super intentional. I'm like
- 1:11Speaker 3: playing fast but not getting sped up. I'm grateful for just.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Like to be able to go out there and who Okay,
- 1:17Speaker 1: let's shift gears because we know the big one v
- 1:19Speaker 1: one tournament is coming up. We looked at your bracket.
- 1:22Speaker 1: You got the two seed. Any thoughts about any thoughts
- 1:24Speaker 1: about the two seed because I know how competitive you are.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I heard.
- 1:28Speaker 3: A little bit because I was number one the day before,
- 1:31Speaker 3: so then when it came out, I got dropped number two.
- 1:33Speaker 3: I thought that was interesting, but hey, you know, take
- 1:36Speaker 3: it a grain salt and keep it pushing. I got
- 1:39Speaker 3: a fun first round matchup, so I'm excited about that.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You know, I love like commentator talking to you because
- 1:46Speaker 1: I understand I played with you, man, I understand you
- 1:49Speaker 1: one of the most competitive people I've ever met. So
- 1:51Speaker 1: I know that two seed, I'm gonna talk that talk
- 1:53Speaker 1: for you. I know you believe you're a one seed
- 1:55Speaker 1: and you're gonna set out in this tournament to prove
- 1:58Speaker 1: everybody you know to prove why you should have been
- 2:01Speaker 1: that one seed. Let's get to the parts of your
- 2:03Speaker 1: game that I think are gonna be extremely valuable in
- 2:06Speaker 1: this one v one tournament and makes you completely deadly
- 2:10Speaker 1: when you go out. Obviously, we understand your catch and shoot,
- 2:14Speaker 1: we understand your three off the dribble, that's what you're
- 2:17Speaker 1: known for. But I think these things that you've added
- 2:19Speaker 1: to your game can make you unstoppable in this one
- 2:22Speaker 1: one tournament. So physicality. I think from the time you've
- 2:26Speaker 1: come in the league, in the WBA and obviously within Unrivaled,
- 2:30Speaker 1: everyone talks about the physicality of the game. And obviously
- 2:34Speaker 1: you know you're a strong guard, but I think people
- 2:38Speaker 1: sometimes underestimate how much you seek out contact, especially now
- 2:42Speaker 1: in getting to the rack. So I want to play
- 2:44Speaker 1: this play all the way through and then we can
- 2:46Speaker 1: go back and break it down. So right here, obviously
- 2:49Speaker 1: this is in transition. You've got a head of steam,
- 2:52Speaker 1: You're going right to left setting the screen. You have
- 2:55Speaker 1: a bigger post player on you, and you're able to
- 2:57Speaker 1: beat them around the switch. So right here, this is
- 3:03Speaker 1: the part of your game that I absolutely feel like
- 3:07Speaker 1: when you have ahead of seam this right here and
- 3:11Speaker 1: I'm gonna go back. This right here is your setup.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Because you're square, your shoulders are square. You can go
- 3:20Speaker 1: either way. So when you are receiving a pick and roll,
- 3:23Speaker 1: I know you're not going to receive a pick and
- 3:24Speaker 1: roll in one v one, But when you are receiving
- 3:28Speaker 1: a pick and roll, can you talk about how important
- 3:30Speaker 1: it is to not give away which direction you're going
- 3:33Speaker 1: because you're great at rejecting as well keeping them honest.
- 3:37Speaker 3: A lot of players, I think have tendencies to, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 3: always invite the pick and roll. And while that's great,
- 3:42Speaker 3: I'm actually just trying to get the best mismatch, last advantage,
- 3:47Speaker 3: and to be honest, a lot of times I don't
- 3:48Speaker 3: even care who it is. I actually probably this is
- 3:51Speaker 3: a little bit, you know, the competitor in me. But
- 3:55Speaker 3: I get excited about bigger, bigger players, right, So I'm
- 3:58Speaker 3: trying to find someone that I want to you know,
- 4:01Speaker 3: go at. And you know, I thought Beck Allen, you know,
- 4:04Speaker 3: kind of squared his shoulders. So I was like, Okay,
- 4:07Speaker 3: I'm gonna take the screen. It's going left. I won't
- 4:10Speaker 3: ever turn down going left. And I thought, Ala just
- 4:13Speaker 3: came out too.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Fast, and.
- 4:15Speaker 3: You know, I kind of just threw the ball out
- 4:17Speaker 3: and then ran and go got it, go, get it go,
- 4:20Speaker 3: got it went and got it. There you go.
- 4:23Speaker 1: But I will say that this is really hard to
- 4:26Speaker 1: guard because you are going left obviously to your strong hand,
- 4:30Speaker 1: but your quickness in turning the corner obviously is difficult
- 4:35Speaker 1: because you always, as a big are trying to protect
- 4:39Speaker 1: this right because we understand your step back, we understand
- 4:43Speaker 1: your left to right. We understand like, especially when you're
- 4:46Speaker 1: going right, that like pullback that you do. So as
- 4:50Speaker 1: a post player, we're taught to get up and trust
- 4:52Speaker 1: our help. But in three v three you're not gonna
- 4:56Speaker 1: have very much help. So I think that's an adjustment
- 4:59Speaker 1: from the beginning of three v three that you've made
- 5:02Speaker 1: that you really are just putting the ball out there
- 5:04Speaker 1: and like utilizing your quickness to get around right here.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Nice finish, Okay, so we're gonna go to the next video.
- 5:16Speaker 1: So again I think you're set up. We talk about
- 5:19Speaker 1: a lot of players that are great at a lot
- 5:21Speaker 1: of different things which unlocks other parts of their game. Obviously,
- 5:26Speaker 1: you were dependent on heavily in the WNBA to get
- 5:30Speaker 1: to the paint, and I think in terms of you
- 5:32Speaker 1: playing with the aces, you understood get to the paint.
- 5:35Speaker 1: You play really well off of two feet and under control.
- 5:38Speaker 1: But I think it's also utilizing and understanding when you're
- 5:41Speaker 1: trying to beat players to a certain spot. This is
- 5:43Speaker 1: kind of another example. I'll let the play run all
- 5:45Speaker 1: the way through. Great Hustle play by Natasha Cloud. Right here,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you're taking your time. You understand cam Brink is off.
- 5:55Speaker 1: But what people aren't gonna see in this play. First
- 5:58Speaker 1: of all, you took your time and you understand cam
- 6:00Speaker 1: Brink is off, she's not up to touch, and I
- 6:05Speaker 1: think you understand time and score because right here, I
- 6:07Speaker 1: think the three is kind of there. But this is
- 6:10Speaker 1: a game winner. So like, what are you thinking right
- 6:13Speaker 1: now as you catch and you've got Page up in
- 6:15Speaker 1: your space? Aliah come in to set, hopefully not a
- 6:17Speaker 1: moving screen as you like to joke with her.
- 6:20Speaker 2: She's been great, She's been great. Yeah.
- 6:23Speaker 3: So I knew that if we gave him the ball
- 6:25Speaker 3: back it might be over, and I just didn't want
- 6:29Speaker 3: to let that happen. So obviously Pages up really tight,
- 6:32Speaker 3: So I was gonna come off super tight, and I
- 6:34Speaker 3: was gonna get downhill seeing Cam and drop taking the space.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Like with the momentum. Like you said, I think trying
- 6:41Speaker 2: to make the big feel uncomfortable, like they're backpedaling and
- 6:44Speaker 2: they're not in position right now.
- 6:46Speaker 3: So coming off the screen, I'm going right at Kim
- 6:49Speaker 3: and then I'm just waiting for her timing, like I
- 6:51Speaker 3: know she's trying to time me, so i know she
- 6:53Speaker 3: stepped up a little bit, so I'm gonna be able
- 6:55Speaker 3: to get around her, and then I'm just waiting for
- 6:56Speaker 3: her to put her arm up and then from there
- 6:59Speaker 3: I can side one to shoot.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Dude, I love how you just broke down this clip
- 7:03Speaker 1: because I don't even think I mean, you realize what
- 7:05Speaker 1: you do because you're intentional with it. But as a big,
- 7:07Speaker 1: when you're back you're back pedaling right here. Look at
- 7:12Speaker 1: Cam's feet, so automatically you're attacking that. But then it's
- 7:17Speaker 1: this little slight heavy that puts people, that makes her
- 7:23Speaker 1: have to react to it. And so as a big,
- 7:26Speaker 1: when you're already recovering, you know that you can knock
- 7:30Speaker 1: down that pull up jump shot in your sleep. It's
- 7:33Speaker 1: really difficult to stay in front of this, especially when
- 7:37Speaker 1: you get ahead of steam. You know, going at the
- 7:40Speaker 1: big right here, you take your time. Your change of speed,
- 7:42Speaker 1: although subtle, that little heavy it made her come forward
- 7:47Speaker 1: and then you're able to take the angle, keep and
- 7:50Speaker 1: hold the contact and then same foot, same leg, you know,
- 7:54Speaker 1: beat her to the spot. And so obviously that was
- 7:57Speaker 1: the game winner on that play. But I think it
- 7:59Speaker 1: was your pace right here. You could have played fast,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you kind of took your time. It's that heavy right
- 8:04Speaker 1: there that I think allows you to play the angle.
- 8:06Speaker 1: It's almost like a quarterback when you're playing, or a
- 8:08Speaker 1: running back, rather like when you're playing those angles, it's
- 8:11Speaker 1: really difficult for a recovering defense. So I know that
- 8:15Speaker 1: would be something that you know as a big it's
- 8:18Speaker 1: almost impossible to guard once you get ahead of steam.
- 8:21Speaker 1: And we always talked about being up to touch, but
- 8:23Speaker 1: I think it's especially when you're coming off of pick
- 8:25Speaker 1: and roll. It's like super crucial because if you get
- 8:28Speaker 1: that head of steam, then like you have so much,
- 8:31Speaker 1: you play off two feet, you step through, you fake.
- 8:35Speaker 1: So I think you've really mastered that. Let's go to
- 8:37Speaker 1: another thing, another play your footwork, which I think is
- 8:42Speaker 1: always on display. We'll let this play all the way through.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Great set up, little push off, but we'll let you
- 8:47Speaker 1: get away with it right to left coming off key
- 8:51Speaker 1: key screen, the heavy right there, the patience and surveying
- 8:56Speaker 1: to get to your spot. So Stewie switching obviously, I
- 8:59Speaker 1: think Stewie plays pretty good defense on this. Right your
- 9:03Speaker 1: patient surveying, go the baseline, get the matchup and the
- 9:10Speaker 1: switch off where you can get your jump shot off
- 9:12Speaker 1: off of a smaller Ali Sugar, and then you get
- 9:15Speaker 1: you get to your baseline fade. I mean, talk me
- 9:19Speaker 1: through the patients and the importance of being a guard
- 9:22Speaker 1: and letting the play develop and not forcing it necessarily.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's a big area of growth for
- 9:28Speaker 3: me this year, especially going in Unride with because every
- 9:32Speaker 3: game is pretty much a game winner, and most of
- 9:35Speaker 3: these games are super close, so you get tons of reps,
- 9:37Speaker 3: an opportunity of like live decisions at end of games.
- 9:41Speaker 3: I knew they were switching on this picking roll. They
- 9:43Speaker 3: kind of switched all night, so I was gonna I
- 9:46Speaker 3: was gonna drive it. And because I think a lot
- 9:49Speaker 3: of times when you switch, guards can settle and you know,
- 9:52Speaker 3: I'm not a guard that shoots over people, so a
- 9:55Speaker 3: lot of times that they can keep me in front
- 9:57Speaker 3: and I have to take a step back, that's a
- 9:58Speaker 3: win for them.
- 10:00Speaker 2: And so I think just trying to put pressure on her.
- 10:02Speaker 3: And then knowing too that a lot of times when
- 10:04Speaker 3: you keep your dribble, bigs aren't sure if they should
- 10:06Speaker 3: switch back, if they should stay. And it was a
- 10:10Speaker 3: game winner late shot clock, so I know, like scheme wise,
- 10:12Speaker 3: you're kind of like making it up.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Defensively, You're not exactly sure what you're supposed to do.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So when do you just put your head down and
- 10:19Speaker 1: go to work and when do you feel like, you
- 10:23Speaker 1: know you kind of have to play more of a setup.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it just depends on the space. Like
- 10:29Speaker 3: she gambled and overplayed there, so just gave me a lane.
- 10:33Speaker 3: But one of my coaches told me one time, like, hey,
- 10:36Speaker 3: if you want to shoot more threes, you need to
- 10:38Speaker 3: shoot more lips, more paint touches.
- 10:40Speaker 2: So just trying to keep the defense honest.
- 10:42Speaker 3: And know that at any time I'm going to be
- 10:45Speaker 3: able to go buy them, and so that I think
- 10:48Speaker 3: keeps people a little bit more at distance, and then
- 10:49Speaker 3: if they're at distance, that's when I can start stepping back.
- 10:53Speaker 1: All right, it's time for the winning connection. I want
- 10:57Speaker 1: to know from a one v one standpoint, what player
- 11:01Speaker 1: do you feel like you can compare to your game,
- 11:05Speaker 1: whether they're in Unrivaled, whether they're in the w n
- 11:08Speaker 1: B A, whatever, Like, who do you see as a
- 11:11Speaker 1: player that you can you that has comparison or some
- 11:14Speaker 1: parts of your game?
- 11:17Speaker 3: Okay, Lefty gets to step back. Obviously his mid range
- 11:20Speaker 3: is like it's filthy, Like I'm not on that level.
- 11:24Speaker 3: We get we're working on, but that's gonna take a while.
- 11:27Speaker 3: But I think in terms of like his pivots, the
- 11:29Speaker 3: craftiness he does he's able to go buy people, and
- 11:33Speaker 3: then obviously like his ability to get his three off
- 11:37Speaker 3: off the dribble, I think that's kind of probably the
- 11:40Speaker 3: best comparison.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I think your first step as well, just in terms
- 11:45Speaker 1: of your first step usually is always north south, it's
- 11:49Speaker 1: not east west, and I think that's what makes it
- 11:51Speaker 1: harder for whatever size defender that you're attacking. Now there
- 11:57Speaker 1: is another side of the ball. Okay, so what is
- 12:01Speaker 1: your strategy now on the defensive end that that will
- 12:06Speaker 1: play to your benefit in one v one?
- 12:09Speaker 3: Yeah? You know, and it's it's been cool I Unrivaled
- 12:12Speaker 3: because you get a lot of one on one opportunities
- 12:14Speaker 3: defensively and I feel like I've gotten a lot better
- 12:17Speaker 3: over the course of the season. Yeah, you're not gonna
- 12:19Speaker 3: win them all, but I think just make it tough,
- 12:21Speaker 3: make it tough, and use the physicality to my advantage.
- 12:24Speaker 3: I am strong and low center of gravity, so really
- 12:28Speaker 3: trying to make them earn it and then make.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Shots well KP.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I cannot wait to tune in. I'm gonna be eating
- 12:37Speaker 1: popcorn like you did in that viral viral meme watching
- 12:41Speaker 1: this one v one tournament. I can't wait. Hey, listen,
- 12:44Speaker 1: remember they gave you the two seed. I would take
- 12:46Speaker 1: that personal.
- 12:47Speaker 2: I got you faced candy
