- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey folks, this is Bill Corbett of Riff Trax and
- 0:08Speaker 1: Mystery Science Theater 3000 and you are listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Music It's showtime. The following feature has been rated R
- 0:23Speaker 1: by the Motion Picture Association of America.
- 0:26Speaker 2: It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Million kilowatts of power.
- 1:01Speaker 3: We provide more cooling in the containment chamber.
- 1:02Speaker 4: To your stations, we have a rebound.
- 1:07Speaker 5: If you've always wanted to talk, why don't y'all go outside?
- 1:09Speaker 6: What a businessman he is.
- 1:12Speaker 5: Oh, totally. From day one, he's like, I'm retaining the rights.
- 1:25Speaker 5: I'm composing the music. I'm retaining the rights.
- 1:28Speaker 3: And that's, you know, that's why Brendan Small has a
- 1:32Speaker 3: lot of money is because he did all the music
- 1:34Speaker 3: for not only Death Clock, but he learned it when
- 1:37Speaker 3: he was doing the music. He did all the music
- 1:39Speaker 3: for home movies.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40Speaker 3: And so he realized how much more he got paid
- 1:42Speaker 3: than everybody else because of just like, because music, it
- 1:45Speaker 3: pays out every time. Every time, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 5: That's what I've heard even with the, like, just theme
- 1:50Speaker 5: songs for dumb sitcoms.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 1:52Speaker 5: And somehow the lyrics. So they're like, put lyrics in.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Because lyrics get you the next level or something. So yeah,
- 1:59Speaker 5: every one of those that then 20 years later is
- 2:02Speaker 5: still in syndication, every time it plays.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Alan Thicke wrote a lot of those. And John Tesh. Yeah.
- 2:08Speaker 5: He's a fabulous musician.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:11Speaker 5: As we all know. We all know. Truthfully, I miss
- 2:14Speaker 5: him on Entertainment Tonight. I can't watch it now.
- 2:17Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:17Speaker 5: It's just, it's so tabloid TV or just, I mean,
- 2:21Speaker 5: it was always fluff. I don't care. It was always fluff.
- 2:22Speaker 5: But like I grew up on it and I was
- 2:24Speaker 5: like the Mary Hart John Tess years were like.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Because you know what it was? It was a bunch
- 2:28Speaker 3: of like EPKs. It was a bunch of just like
- 2:30Speaker 3: press kits that they would host. And it showed you
- 2:34Speaker 3: behind the scenes stuff. And it had less to do
- 2:36Speaker 3: about like the world of celebrity and more to do
- 2:38Speaker 3: about like it's like. People are shooting this movie. We
- 2:41Speaker 3: talk to them behind the scenes.
- 2:43Speaker 5: And it was like they weren't trying to be cool.
- 2:46Speaker 5: By the time they brought in people that were very
- 2:48Speaker 5: conscious of what they were like on screen, where it's like,
- 2:51Speaker 5: Mary Hart's not trying to be cool. She looks like that.
- 2:54Speaker 3: She sits there. We left the serious stuff for a
- 2:57Speaker 3: current affair.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 5: Hardcore, hard-hitting journalism.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Definitely. All right.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Do we want to just jump into it?
- 3:05Speaker 3: Sure. I figured you already started rolling.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 3:09Speaker 5: We can do, I mean, you kind of always did.
- 3:11Speaker 5: There was always like an ease into Jonah Radio.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:15Speaker 5: It was very informal.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 3: We tried to make, that was almost the idea of it,
- 3:20Speaker 3: just making it as informal as possible.
- 3:22Speaker 5: Which is where I've ended up.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:23Speaker 5: But just so they know who we're talking. What's up
- 3:26Speaker 5: and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian and joining me
- 3:28Speaker 5: this week.
- 3:31Speaker 3: No, no, no. Am I supposed to say my own name?
- 3:33Speaker 7: Go ahead.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Or do you think I was going to do a
- 3:34Speaker 3: spit take when you said my name?
- 3:36Speaker 5: I was kind of like, if I... No!
- 3:38Speaker 3: No, you're geared. Hi, this is Jonah Ray from Mystery
- 3:44Speaker 3: Science Theater 3000, The Return, and The Gauntlet.
- 3:48Speaker 5: And the Internet Abroad.
- 3:49Speaker 3: And the Internet Abroad. I have a career because of
- 3:52Speaker 3: the Internet.
- 3:53Speaker 5: So many things. That is what I mean. It's always
- 3:57Speaker 5: been kind of interesting. So I always sort of jump
- 3:59Speaker 5: in at the beginning and try to figure out how
- 4:01Speaker 5: everybody got to where they ended up. With you, I know...
- 4:04Speaker 5: I'm still.
- 4:05Speaker 3: On my way, brother.
- 4:06Speaker 5: Well, we all are. I don't know where we're going,
- 4:09Speaker 5: but we're all heading there. But the... I mean, with
- 4:12Speaker 5: anybody who knows you, even mildly, knows where you were born,
- 4:16Speaker 5: because it's become a good portion of your material. But
- 4:18Speaker 5: how did you get there? Like, your family. Like, how did...
- 4:21Speaker 5: Because you said you weren't military, which is usually what
- 4:24Speaker 5: would lead people to someplace.
- 4:25Speaker 3: No, and you know that... Being from Hawaii, it's something
- 4:29Speaker 3: that I... didn't know how to talk about for a
- 4:32Speaker 3: real long time. Yeah. I didn't have, when I first
- 4:34Speaker 3: started comedy, I kind of tried to talk about it,
- 4:36Speaker 3: but it would just confuse people. And then to say
- 4:37Speaker 3: that I'm not from military, cause that's what they would assume. And, um,
- 4:41Speaker 3: and to try and talk about Hawaii is just tricky
- 4:44Speaker 3: as like a guy who looks as wide as me. Um,
- 4:47Speaker 3: and you know, and I, and you still saw me
- 4:49Speaker 3: trying to figure out how to like temper, cause it's like,
- 4:51Speaker 3: I'll do this stuff, you know, uh, like I did,
- 4:54Speaker 3: I was just in Hawaii, uh, back home doing a
- 4:56Speaker 3: set and like, I didn't have to preface any of the.
- 4:58Speaker 5: They know.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Yeah, they know.
- 5:00Speaker 5: They're there.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And it's totally fine because everyone just kind of talks
- 5:02Speaker 3: like that. But like out here, like on the mainland,
- 5:06Speaker 3: I can always feel people kind of tensing up a
- 5:08Speaker 3: bit when they're going, oh, brother, what you going to do?
- 5:10Speaker 3: Like they go, okay.
- 5:13Speaker 5: I mean, we've hit a weird line. It's like, yes,
- 5:16Speaker 5: there are many horrible people out there and they're all
- 5:18Speaker 5: racist and close minded. And yeah, that's the world we
- 5:22Speaker 5: live in. But we've also got to the point where
- 5:24Speaker 5: I'm like, sometimes I'm like, but but that's how they talk. Like,
- 5:27Speaker 5: I'm not, we're not making fun of like, we're just
- 5:29Speaker 5: doing an impersonation of, you know, I'm like, there's so
- 5:32Speaker 5: many times when I'm like, you know, so we can't
- 5:34Speaker 5: have a poo running the, cause he has a funny accent,
- 5:37Speaker 5: but like, it's not supposed to be funny. Cause I
- 5:40Speaker 5: don't know. It's, it's, that's always like one of those things. Yeah.
- 5:43Speaker 3: You know, and Kumail and I, when we did the meltdown,
- 5:45Speaker 3: we would have those talks a lot. So, you know,
- 5:47Speaker 3: on stage we would talk about like, and like, it's like,
- 5:51Speaker 3: and we would always go to the ridiculous extension of like, uh,
- 5:54Speaker 3: I was like, so I can't say that that car's red?
- 5:58Speaker 3: And he's like, no, that's racist. And I was like,
- 6:01Speaker 3: but you can. He's like, yes, I can be racist
- 6:04Speaker 3: because I'm not white.
- 6:06Speaker 5: Damn it.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Well, and especially with you because it's like. I can't
- 6:10Speaker 5: remember my childhood. Like, you know, like this is what
- 6:13Speaker 5: you grew up. These are your stories. Now I can't
- 6:15Speaker 5: tell my stories or you have to like whiten up
- 6:16Speaker 5: my stories.
- 6:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 6:17Speaker 3: And I do, I want to, I want to be
- 6:19Speaker 3: honest with it. And I want to like, you know,
- 6:20Speaker 3: it's like, and that's the kind of the weird part is, uh,
- 6:22Speaker 3: you know, like my, my dad's side of the family.
- 6:25Speaker 3: So the reason I was born in Hawaii, uh, was, uh,
- 6:28Speaker 3: my dad's side of the family, uh, the Portuguese, uh,
- 6:30Speaker 3: you know, Rodrigues side, Furtado. Um, they've been there for generations. Like,
- 6:36Speaker 3: it's like, I'm thinking I'm, uh, fourth or fifth born
- 6:41Speaker 3: in Hawaii generation on my dad's side.
- 6:43Speaker 5: But do you have your birth certificate?
- 6:45Speaker 3: I have a certificate of live birth. That's what was
- 6:48Speaker 3: so funny about during the Obama era. It says certificate
- 6:50Speaker 3: of live birth. I was like, yeah, dude, that's what
- 6:51Speaker 3: mine says. That's what they say out there.
- 6:52Speaker 5: That means he wasn't dead. That's a good thing. That's
- 6:55Speaker 5: what we're looking for.
- 6:56Speaker 3: But my mom's... Where do I get my skin from?
- 7:02Speaker 3: My mom's family was living in Northern California in a
- 7:05Speaker 3: town called Orland near Sacramento, kind of. And her dad
- 7:11Speaker 3: just loved Hawaii and was trying to figure out a
- 7:13Speaker 3: way to move the family to Hawaii and had a
- 7:16Speaker 3: furniture business with his dad. And then the town started
- 7:20Speaker 3: kind of going down a little bit in the 60s.
- 7:22Speaker 3: And he was like, I want to just try and
- 7:24Speaker 3: figure it out. So he went to Hawaii for a
- 7:26Speaker 3: month by himself trying to look for work and then
- 7:31Speaker 3: found out that they were going to be opening up
- 7:32Speaker 3: a Sears. The first Sears on Hawaii in this huge
- 7:35Speaker 3: mall they were building called Ala Moana.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Um satellite stores that's what we want yeah yeah and
- 7:40Speaker 5: like attach ourselves to the the chain.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Yeah and like he was like he went out and
- 7:43Speaker 3: he was like uh he's like hey i used to
- 7:45Speaker 3: run a furniture shop and this let me run your
- 7:48Speaker 3: furniture department and they said okay and uh and then
- 7:51Speaker 3: so he moved the family out there my mom moved
- 7:53Speaker 3: out there when she was 12 so did he move.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Back there um so so like did the grandparent left
- 7:59Speaker 5: yeah by the time point to america and That's how he.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Ended up in California? Hawaii is part of America.
- 8:05Speaker 7: Well, no.
- 8:06Speaker 5: The mainland.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. So, like, yeah, they were all from California.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Then they moved the whole family over in the 60s.
- 8:12Speaker 3: And then in the late 70s, he moved back. Like,
- 8:14Speaker 3: they moved to California.
- 8:15Speaker 5: I'm just working in this, like, reverse thing that you
- 8:18Speaker 5: do then. It's like, okay, I'm in what you think
- 8:20Speaker 5: is paradise, but I want to go back to California.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I don't know why they– I mean,
- 8:25Speaker 3: it's an expensive place to live.
- 8:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I don't– I never really check to see, you know,
- 8:30Speaker 3: something I should do. My mom probably knows. I got
- 8:34Speaker 3: to get better at that stuff of asking family, like,
- 8:37Speaker 3: why did this happen? Because I don't want to speculate.
- 8:40Speaker 5: Occasionally, I get weird stories. And I'm just like, wait,
- 8:43Speaker 5: is any of that true? I'll just hear my dad
- 8:45Speaker 5: or my grandmother used to have weird stories. I'm like,
- 8:48Speaker 5: is any of this real?
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 3: And sometimes when they like, it's just they'll see something
- 8:51Speaker 3: that's like an aside. Or it's like, well, yeah, it's
- 8:54Speaker 3: like when your uncle went to prison for a bit.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And you're like, wait, what? When? When did that happen?
- 8:58Speaker 5: You skipped that part when I was growing up. What
- 9:00Speaker 5: the hell?
- 9:00Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, we didn't want to tell you. Oh, okay.
- 9:02Speaker 3: um so yeah so like you know i was i
- 9:04Speaker 3: was born and raised there and my you know well
- 9:07Speaker 3: like uh my family on that side that i grew
- 9:09Speaker 3: up with are very very local you know very like
- 9:11Speaker 3: part hawaiian part you know yeah it's like so um
- 9:15Speaker 3: so yeah you know i was i was there and
- 9:17Speaker 3: it was um and i was a big kid so
- 9:19Speaker 3: it was like you know i like it felt like
- 9:23Speaker 3: small to me the island and and especially when i
- 9:27Speaker 3: started getting into music and movies and stuff like that.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Like it felt, I felt stifled growing up there, especially
- 9:33Speaker 3: cause it's like, you know, it's just, it's just, uh,
- 9:36Speaker 3: it's a great, beautiful place and I love it. Um,
- 9:39Speaker 3: but it's like, there's only so much there. And if
- 9:41Speaker 3: you don't want to just cruise and like go surfing and,
- 9:45Speaker 3: you know, have that kind of life, um, it's not
- 9:48Speaker 3: much for you. And so like, I got the bug
- 9:51Speaker 3: pretty early on that I wanted to leave. Um, And
- 9:54Speaker 3: also it's like all this stuff, like the style of
- 9:56Speaker 3: comedy out there or the style of entertainment was like,
- 10:00Speaker 3: not what I watched. I wanted to be involved. It's
- 10:02Speaker 3: like I was watching Mr. Show and Kissing the Hall
- 10:04Speaker 3: and be like, I want to try and get on
- 10:05Speaker 3: those shows.
- 10:06Speaker 5: See, that's– yeah, that's what I was going to say.
- 10:08Speaker 5: Because again, usually I try to figure out like what
- 10:10Speaker 5: you were into as a kid. So I was wondering
- 10:13Speaker 5: how much more limiting it was because I mean it
- 10:16Speaker 5: was– I was trying to gauge the time frames. I mean,
- 10:19Speaker 5: everybody here by then probably had cable. Yeah, I had cable. Okay,
- 10:23Speaker 5: cable was at least.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I was born in 82. And I had cable.
- 10:29Speaker 3: We didn't get a lot of movies. There was one,
- 10:34Speaker 3: maybe Art House Theater, that would show small stuff. But
- 10:38Speaker 3: we had record stores. And bands, some bands would come. Yeah.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Just to get a trip to Hawaii.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Yeah sometimes yeah yeah it was like that was always
- 10:48Speaker 3: kind of the thing it was like I saw some
- 10:49Speaker 3: great bands that probably lost a ton of money but
- 10:51Speaker 3: just were like well we'll go out there we'll play
- 10:53Speaker 3: a show and then we'll have some local scene kids
- 10:56Speaker 3: take us around.
- 10:56Speaker 5: Yeah, and we'll go hang out on the beach for
- 10:58Speaker 5: an extra day.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 10:59Speaker 5: And fly back.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Exactly. And that's kind of what we used to write
- 11:02Speaker 3: to bands, saying, you won't make money, but we'll show
- 11:04Speaker 3: you around. We'll show you a great time. And so, yeah,
- 11:09Speaker 3: it just seemed like everything I liked came from the mainland.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 5: So I guess early on, like as a kid, before
- 11:15Speaker 5: you even got to that point, I guess, what were
- 11:16Speaker 5: you drawn to? Was it super geeky stuff, or was
- 11:20Speaker 5: it just mainstream kind of... No, I mean like.
- 11:24Speaker 3: It was it's i don't know because it's like it's
- 11:27Speaker 3: funny because um i remember a long time ago we
- 11:29Speaker 3: were doing a live nerdist and someone asked like how
- 11:32Speaker 3: did you like how what was it like for you
- 11:34Speaker 3: like growing up like being like thinking about being a
- 11:38Speaker 3: nerd and like you know being like and i was
- 11:40Speaker 3: like i was like i never thought about that stuff
- 11:43Speaker 3: that way i like uh that stuff to me wasn't
- 11:46Speaker 3: an identity as much as it was just like what
- 11:48Speaker 3: I liked.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Especially now it is. It is an identity. Yeah, I
- 11:51Speaker 5: never thought that either. I just now can go back
- 11:53Speaker 5: and go, oh yeah, I was born and raised watching
- 11:55Speaker 5: Star Wars and I love Gilligan's Island. I'm a dork.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly. But to me that stuff was cool.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Didn't you feel it was cool?
- 12:02Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 12:03Speaker 5: But man, when that giant spider's in the cave, It's
- 12:05Speaker 5: the coolest episode I've ever seen. I'm just like, why
- 12:08Speaker 5: is no one else admiring how amazing this giant spider
- 12:12Speaker 5: is that looks super fake? And that's the best part
- 12:14Speaker 5: about it.
- 12:15Speaker 3: And that's kind of how I felt. I was like,
- 12:16Speaker 3: you know. You know, I was like, I was like,
- 12:20Speaker 3: I was like, I was just kind of dumb. I
- 12:21Speaker 3: like this, like, which is kind of the vibe that
- 12:23Speaker 3: people put out now, I feel.
- 12:25Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 5: You know, the ironic hadn't really been fully boring. 90s
- 12:29Speaker 5: is starting to be completely.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Yeah. But I was just excited. I was just like,
- 12:33Speaker 3: I was like, this is cool. And it's even cooler
- 12:34Speaker 3: if you don't know about it. Like, which is like,
- 12:36Speaker 3: you know, proto hipster kind of shit.
- 12:38Speaker 2: But like.
- 12:38Speaker 3: But that's even like outside of bands. That's also movies
- 12:40Speaker 3: and that's also like– That's how it.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Started before everything was mainstream.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 12:45Speaker 5: We were talking about that recently that we're just like
- 12:47Speaker 5: how often– like if you go back far enough, when
- 12:50Speaker 5: we were kids, like you couldn't even get like band
- 12:52Speaker 5: shirts or movie shirts.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:53Speaker 5: Like you had to write off– again, you had to
- 12:55Speaker 5: write to California and be like, hey, this one company
- 12:57Speaker 5: is making a shirt with this on it.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Like when Suncoast Motion Picture Company opened up at the
- 13:01Speaker 3: mall near– I worked there.
- 13:02Speaker 7: Oh, nice, nice.
- 13:04Speaker 5: For more years than I need to discuss.
- 13:06Speaker 3: When I saw that at the mall, Windward Mall, I
- 13:08Speaker 3: remember just going like, this is like a blockbuster I
- 13:12Speaker 3: can buy stuff from. And then they had the shirts.
- 13:15Speaker 3: I remember I got Mystery Science Theater shirts. They had three.
- 13:18Speaker 5: I have the hat at home still.
- 13:20Speaker 3: The same one. I had the worst MST shirt ever
- 13:23Speaker 3: made too. It was this big white shirt. I mean,
- 13:25Speaker 3: all the shirts were big. But it was– and then
- 13:29Speaker 3: Crow really big on one side. Like on the right
- 13:32Speaker 3: side and the left side was a big Tom Servo.
- 13:34Speaker 3: size-wise that didn't like match up at all they were
- 13:36Speaker 3: like because they were of equal size i think i.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Remember this i probably put it on hangers.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Yeah and do you remember it was like you're like
- 13:41Speaker 3: like and behind them was this like behind crows like
- 13:44Speaker 3: neon pink and behind servo like neon kind of like
- 13:47Speaker 3: uh like green or something like them yeah yeah there
- 13:50Speaker 3: were some weird choices yeah.
- 13:52Speaker 5: But i remember that i remember walking through them all
- 13:54Speaker 5: and like there was a sign and it said coming
- 13:57Speaker 5: soon sun and i was just like.
- 13:59Speaker 3: This is it.
- 13:59Speaker 5: This is all.
- 14:00Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Because I'd seen one before. There was one other. I
- 14:03Speaker 5: was like, this is where, and like, as soon as
- 14:05Speaker 5: it opened, I was like, okay, where do I put
- 14:06Speaker 5: my application? I need to be here.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Didn't it remember feeling like it was bigger than something
- 14:12Speaker 3: that you know before? Because it wasn't Suncoast Video. It
- 14:15Speaker 3: was Suncoast Motion Picture Company.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Motion Picture Company. Yeah.
- 14:18Speaker 3: And didn't that feel like big?
- 14:20Speaker 5: It's pretty legit.
- 14:21Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 5: We're still putting out movies now.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Yeah. But it's like, it felt like, I remember just
- 14:27Speaker 3: being like, this is, And just, you know, and you
- 14:29Speaker 3: don't necessarily choose everything you get into.
- 14:32Speaker 2: No.
- 14:32Speaker 3: But I remember just being drawn to it. And then
- 14:34Speaker 3: I remember like, I remember just like being so excited
- 14:38Speaker 3: because it's like, you know, the Mystery Science Theater, like
- 14:41Speaker 3: to buy those cassettes was like a lot.
- 14:43Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Because it's also like, you know, because that collector thing
- 14:45Speaker 3: starts to come and you're like, well, I guess I
- 14:46Speaker 3: can get my favorite episodes, but wouldn't it be kind
- 14:48Speaker 3: of neat to have all the collection of volume ones
- 14:50Speaker 3: and that and the shorts and then. So I never
- 14:51Speaker 3: really bought a lot of those. Yeah, I only had
- 14:53Speaker 3: a few. Yeah, but I remember the one I got
- 14:55Speaker 3: was the Mystery Science Theater, the movie. Because it was
- 14:57Speaker 3: like succinct. And I got to see that in the
- 14:59Speaker 3: theater too.
- 15:00Speaker 5: I did, yeah. I think I got it. I think
- 15:02Speaker 5: that was one of the ones I got on DVD.
- 15:03Speaker 5: So again, I'm already throwing off my geeky things. Because
- 15:06Speaker 5: I had the videos, which again, I think somebody asked
- 15:09Speaker 5: you last night what your favorite episode from the old
- 15:11Speaker 5: series was. Mine, I did get it. We didn't match up.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Mitchell. Mitchell. Mitchell, you know, Mitchell's up there for me.
- 15:20Speaker 3: I remember I was like, oh man, this is 15
- 15:23Speaker 3: years ago, maybe or something like that. But I was
- 15:24Speaker 3: like dating a girl and we liked Mystery Science Theater
- 15:26Speaker 3: a lot. And like I made some song for her
- 15:28Speaker 3: and like the chorus was just, Waka-chicka, waka-chicka, waka-chicka, Mitchell.
- 15:31Speaker 4: You got any mace for teachers?
- 15:35Speaker 3: But yeah, so it's like, you know, getting into that stuff,
- 15:39Speaker 3: just liking it. Because also I loved Weird Al. I
- 15:41Speaker 3: thought Weird Al was totally cool.
- 15:42Speaker 4: No, yeah.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Mel Brooks. And there was a lot of... I'm realizing,
- 15:47Speaker 3: I guess now in a bit, like, a lot of
- 15:51Speaker 3: the stuff I liked was entertainment and commentary on entertainment
- 15:54Speaker 3: at the same time.
- 15:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:57Speaker 3: You know, like, well, Mel Brooks was, of course, parody.
- 15:59Speaker 3: But he also, like, talked about movie making within the movies.
- 16:02Speaker 5: At his better version. Because, again, he got to a
- 16:05Speaker 5: point of almost doing, like. like just silly airplane like
- 16:08Speaker 5: airplane did so well that other people then mimicked it
- 16:11Speaker 5: even somebody like mel.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Brooks yeah i felt the same way i think he
- 16:14Speaker 3: like saw it and was like oh i should kind of.
- 16:16Speaker 5: That's space balls like i don't think space balls is
- 16:18Speaker 5: great i love the stuff that's in it but i'm
- 16:21Speaker 5: like it feels like it's just trying to do an
- 16:22Speaker 5: airplane version of star wars and every other sci-fi.
- 16:25Speaker 3: You know what it feels like to me it feels
- 16:27Speaker 3: uh it feels cynical um and mean and it's kind
- 16:31Speaker 3: of true because he didn't like star wars yeah he
- 16:33Speaker 3: hated the fact that he had to take his kid
- 16:35Speaker 3: to it a bunch of times And he didn't understand
- 16:37Speaker 3: why it was so huge. And so he came at
- 16:40Speaker 3: that from like a negative point of view.
- 16:42Speaker 5: I mean, the marketing segment in the movie is vicious.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Yes. It's like, but you know what he loved? He
- 16:48Speaker 3: loved Westerns.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yep.
- 16:49Speaker 3: And then he also, he loved Alfred Hitchcock.
- 16:52Speaker 5: And you can feel it. Like those don't feel like
- 16:54Speaker 5: he's knocking, he's not knocking it off and he's not
- 16:57Speaker 5: being mean about it. It's just pure geek love.
- 17:00Speaker 3: That's the best kind. That's why scary movies aren't good
- 17:02Speaker 3: because they're making fun of horror movies as opposed to
- 17:04Speaker 3: just like, you know, loving horror movies. And that's my
- 17:07Speaker 3: favorite kind of parody. And that's like, I ended up
- 17:12Speaker 3: doing a show called Hidden America, which was like, everyone's like, oh,
- 17:15Speaker 3: you're making fun of Bourdain. I was like, no, here's
- 17:16Speaker 3: the thing. I love Bourdain so much. And I wanted
- 17:20Speaker 3: to make a funny version of it. Just how like
- 17:22Speaker 3: Shaun of the Dead, like they loved zombie movies so much.
- 17:24Speaker 3: And they just wanted to make a funny version of
- 17:26Speaker 3: that movie.
- 17:27Speaker 5: And you can feel it. Again, it's not, because I've
- 17:30Speaker 5: seen plenty of cheesy comedies that came out after that,
- 17:33Speaker 5: making fun of zombie movies. And they were making fun
- 17:35Speaker 5: of them. And I'm like, there's nothing in that in
- 17:38Speaker 5: Shaun of the Dead. Like it is just pure geeks
- 17:41Speaker 5: loving their genre.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. And like Hot Fuzz. It's like they love
- 17:45Speaker 3: those movies. And that shines through. So it's like, you know,
- 17:48Speaker 3: with Mel Brooks, like I just was obsessed with Mel Brooks.
- 17:52Speaker 3: I was obsessed with like Hollywood and show business in general.
- 17:55Speaker 3: And that's why I feel so fortunate just because it's like,
- 17:58Speaker 3: you know, I was just shooting a part on a
- 18:00Speaker 3: movie right before like a couple weeks ago. And like,
- 18:04Speaker 3: you know, and it's like I'm not the lead and
- 18:06Speaker 3: it's great because it's like I don't have a ton
- 18:08Speaker 3: of stuff to do, but I'm around.
- 18:10Speaker 5: You can be like, look, that's me.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Yeah. It's like, but I'm like, you know, I have
- 18:13Speaker 3: a ton of lines. I'm in most of the scenes,
- 18:15Speaker 3: but like it's like But I don't have the weight
- 18:16Speaker 3: of being the lead.
- 18:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Which I have to– I had been.
- 18:19Speaker 5: For– yeah, your shows is like it centers around you.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Everything is about you.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 18:23Speaker 3: So it was great. And so– and there was like
- 18:27Speaker 3: one day where it's like I got in and then–
- 18:29Speaker 3: but they were running late. And then there was like–
- 18:33Speaker 3: they're shooting stuff and I'm watching. There's a couple kind
- 18:35Speaker 3: of action-y moments like just someone getting thrown on the ground.
- 18:37Speaker 3: That stuff always takes a long time.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:39Speaker 3: And they're shooting tons of angles and stuff like that.
- 18:42Speaker 3: And then they kind of go late and then they
- 18:43Speaker 3: don't get to my scene that day. And they were like,
- 18:47Speaker 3: we are so sorry. They were so upset for me.
- 18:50Speaker 3: And I was just like, no, you have to understand.
- 18:52Speaker 3: I love this.
- 18:54Speaker 5: If you were a different actor, I guess you'd be like,
- 18:57Speaker 5: screw this.
- 18:58Speaker 7: I'll be in my trailer.
- 18:59Speaker 5: I don't have a trailer.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Damn it. But they're paying for your time. That block
- 19:04Speaker 3: of time, that's what they're paying for. But it's like,
- 19:07Speaker 3: cause I love making stuff and I love seeing stuff
- 19:09Speaker 3: being made. I love the chaos of a set. You know,
- 19:12Speaker 3: it's a, I've always, I really just am a sucker
- 19:15Speaker 3: for like, you know, I was a kid. I had
- 19:16Speaker 3: tons of movie posters on the walls and I had
- 19:18Speaker 3: like those, that's me. I had the like Charlie Chaplin
- 19:21Speaker 3: and Laurel and Hardy, uh, like, uh, clocks. Do you
- 19:23Speaker 3: remember those were the legs we go back? Yeah. I,
- 19:26Speaker 3: there was also like an Elvis one and a Marilyn
- 19:28Speaker 3: Monroe one. Yeah. Yeah. But you know, I was obsessed
- 19:31Speaker 3: with it. Like, like, so like, you know, Mel Brooks
- 19:33Speaker 3: did that. And for me, um, Weird Al, like, you know,
- 19:37Speaker 3: he was playing music, but he was having fun with it,
- 19:41Speaker 3: and so he was, like, commentating on music and musical tropes.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Especially by the time you get to the nineties. Cause
- 19:46Speaker 5: like the, the big novelty period in the eighties there,
- 19:49Speaker 5: it's like, okay, so that had gone away and he
- 19:51Speaker 5: still would consistently have hits, but it was like only
- 19:54Speaker 5: the hardcore people were following him still.
- 19:56Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:57Speaker 3: But every once in a while it would pop back up.
- 19:59Speaker 5: Every couple of years, he'd still have another one that
- 20:01Speaker 5: went on the charts.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:02Speaker 5: It's he consistent.
- 20:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 5: His career is amazing.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Yeah. The longevity. And it's great just cause he's a
- 20:07Speaker 3: good guy. And, um, And it's also like, it's one
- 20:09Speaker 3: of those things where people like just think about the
- 20:11Speaker 3: albums that come out and people go to his shows,
- 20:13Speaker 3: but you realize it's like, it's like every year almost
- 20:16Speaker 3: he does a huge rock and roll tour.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Like it's a band. They're on buses. Like it's like
- 20:21Speaker 3: these dudes are, you know, they're in their, you know,
- 20:24Speaker 3: little bunks on the buses and they like, it's like,
- 20:26Speaker 3: and they get to the town and they do the soundcheck.
- 20:28Speaker 3: It's like, they're just a rock and roll band.
- 20:30Speaker 5: They are.
- 20:31Speaker 3: So it's a, but like, you know, getting into music
- 20:33Speaker 3: and being a fan of music and then like having
- 20:35Speaker 3: someone that was also doing comedy. So it's like, Mel
- 20:37Speaker 3: Brooks and Mystery Science Theater is a great version of
- 20:40Speaker 3: this where it's like starting to get into genre stuff
- 20:42Speaker 3: and older genre stuff. Starting to do the work where
- 20:44Speaker 3: you kind of start to go, what else came before me?
- 20:47Speaker 3: A lot of it was wanting to know what Mel
- 20:50Speaker 3: Brooks was talking about in some of his older movies.
- 20:51Speaker 5: That's true. His references go pretty deep because he'd been
- 20:55Speaker 5: around so long working in the industry. Yeah. So how
- 20:59Speaker 5: early on– because that's another one. I was trying to
- 21:01Speaker 5: figure out the cable aspect for Mystery Science Theater. So
- 21:04Speaker 5: at that point, you were already– because I started on
- 21:06Speaker 5: Comedy Central.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Yeah, that's when I– I remember– We had commercials for
- 21:09Speaker 3: Comedy Central before it came to our channel. Yeah. It
- 21:13Speaker 3: was like MTV would be on. It would be like,
- 21:15Speaker 3: it's like coming soon to channel 32, Comedy Central. And
- 21:19Speaker 3: I remember like, oh, shit. Like it's a comedy channel.
- 21:24Speaker 3: And they didn't have a lot at the time. So
- 21:28Speaker 3: all I would watch was like whatever was on. So
- 21:30Speaker 3: Benny Hill was on all the time.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Ab Fab.
- 21:33Speaker 5: They played a lot.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Yeah, Kids in the Hall. And I remember because we
- 21:36Speaker 3: had HBO, so I had known about Kids.
- 21:37Speaker 2: In the Hall.
- 21:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I'd watched that on the first run. And it's
- 21:40Speaker 5: funny how much those hold up, too.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's because they weren't topical. That's why it's so, like,
- 21:45Speaker 3: it's like you just watch them and you're like, oh,
- 21:46Speaker 3: they just made a bunch of weird little art films
- 21:48Speaker 3: and monologues.
- 21:49Speaker 5: Weird as hell.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Oh, totally. The sausages one? Yeah.
- 21:52Speaker 5: There's so many others I see that I'm just like,
- 21:55Speaker 5: anybody else that's trying to be this weird, it usually
- 21:57Speaker 5: falls flat. there's something about, I think, just how genuine
- 22:01Speaker 5: they were about how weird they were, I guess.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Paul Myers, who's Mike Myers' brother, wrote
- 22:07Speaker 3: a book, Kids in the Hall, that's just fantastic. I
- 22:09Speaker 3: think it came out a couple years, yeah. But yeah,
- 22:12Speaker 3: so I remember like, and I was like, watch anything
- 22:13Speaker 3: that was on it. And then I remember getting home
- 22:16Speaker 3: one time and turning it on and I just saw
- 22:17Speaker 3: like a black and white movie. I was like, oh,
- 22:18Speaker 3: they're playing some old movie. I don't want a comedy show.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Because like, that was a big thing.
- 22:22Speaker 5: You're going to sit here and make fun of this?
- 22:23Speaker 5: What the hell?
- 22:24Speaker 3: Yeah, but like, it's like, I didn't notice. I just
- 22:25Speaker 3: heard people talking over it. And I thought, And I
- 22:27Speaker 3: saw the silhouettes and I thought the TV was broken.
- 22:30Speaker 3: I thought like two channels were happening.
- 22:31Speaker 5: I feel like every kid probably had that response.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 3: And then like they go out of the theater. I
- 22:36Speaker 3: was like, oh, and then it comes back out. And
- 22:38Speaker 3: then I was like, oh, I've seen that guy in
- 22:40Speaker 3: SNL reruns and like old Letterman reruns. And I was like,
- 22:45Speaker 3: I know that guy. I've seen him do a prop comedy.
- 22:48Speaker 3: And then they did some weird bit. Elmer's always like,
- 22:51Speaker 3: what was the first episode? I mean, I don't know.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Whose brain?
- 22:54Speaker 5: Mine were a big blur.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:55Speaker 5: But it was when they used to run them at
- 22:56Speaker 5: like midnight. So I would always be watching it at
- 22:59Speaker 5: like the point where I'm half awake. So everything really was.
- 23:03Speaker 5: But again, like there's the stuff that you attach yourself
- 23:06Speaker 5: to like that. Like it's not like you just go
- 23:09Speaker 5: to the theater, watch it and you're done and you
- 23:10Speaker 5: go home and forget about a movie you watched. Like
- 23:12Speaker 5: when you're that immersed in. it becomes part of your life.
- 23:15Speaker 5: And every night at one in the morning, I'm sitting
- 23:17Speaker 5: there half awake watching this because I want to see,
- 23:19Speaker 5: I would always be way more excited when they would
- 23:21Speaker 5: leave the movie and go back outside. Which it's always
- 23:24Speaker 5: the reverse with so many shows that are like horror
- 23:27Speaker 5: hosts or whatever. Usually I'm just like, Oh God, they're
- 23:30Speaker 5: going to do another comedy bit.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Just go back to the movie.
- 23:33Speaker 5: And it was the reverse. It was the reverse for,
- 23:37Speaker 5: for mystery science theater. It was like, Oh good. They're
- 23:38Speaker 5: going back out. Cause that stuff was even better. than
- 23:41Speaker 5: the movie sometimes.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Why often? Yeah, exactly. Cause it's like the movie can,
- 23:46Speaker 3: you know, even if they're making good jokes, it's a
- 23:47Speaker 3: slog to watch some of this stuff. And it's, it doesn't,
- 23:50Speaker 3: and it doesn't look good a lot of times. Like some,
- 23:52Speaker 3: especially it's like they would show like old prints of stuff.
- 23:54Speaker 3: So it's like, you're like, it's not even pleasing to see.
- 23:56Speaker 3: That was the thing Joel really wanted with the new stuff.
- 23:58Speaker 3: He's like, he's like, I want good prints. Like I
- 24:00Speaker 3: want it. We're going to be on white screens on
- 24:02Speaker 3: high def. I want the, and like, so he made
- 24:04Speaker 3: a big effort to get like quality prints of movies
- 24:07Speaker 3: for this, these Netflix seasons. But, um, yeah, so it's, uh, uh,
- 24:11Speaker 3: like watching that stuff was, and it's also, you know,
- 24:14Speaker 3: like 94 is like, uh, so this is around the
- 24:16Speaker 3: same time, probably get like, got into, there was a 92, 93,
- 24:19Speaker 3: but then 94, Ed Wood came out.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 24:21Speaker 3: And like, again, like showbiz movie, you know, like, um.
- 24:25Speaker 5: Which in that vein, have you seen the Dolomite is
- 24:28Speaker 5: my name?
- 24:28Speaker 3: I went to the, I went to a screening. It's
- 24:31Speaker 3: so good.
- 24:31Speaker 5: I mean, it's the same writers, but it's that same vein.
- 24:34Speaker 5: It's just like, a different group of wacky characters like
- 24:37Speaker 5: killing themselves, trying to make this movie.
- 24:39Speaker 3: It's like, it's what I've been waiting for is another
- 24:41Speaker 3: Ed Wood. They found it and they nailed it. And
- 24:44Speaker 3: it was exciting too, because it's like, I kind of
- 24:47Speaker 3: started to know Larry, one of the writers, just like
- 24:48Speaker 3: casually like online. And, and, and, but then my friend Dave,
- 24:53Speaker 3: who is a locations manager guy, he's a location scout
- 24:55Speaker 3: for movies and TV shows. And, and he's like a big, like,
- 24:59Speaker 3: you know, he's a nerd for locations. Like we're in
- 25:01Speaker 3: Highland park, our neighborhood, which is like an older kind of,
- 25:04Speaker 3: you know, small hipster area. But he was like, hold on.
- 25:06Speaker 3: And there was this old apartment building, but there was
- 25:08Speaker 3: these like, you know, bungalows clearly made in the 70s
- 25:10Speaker 3: in front of it. He's like, hold on. And then
- 25:13Speaker 3: he like looks up on his phone. He's like, yeah, hey, dude,
- 25:16Speaker 3: that's from City Lights. That's Charlie Chaplin comes out of
- 25:19Speaker 3: there in City Lights. And like, I'm like, ah, like,
- 25:21Speaker 3: you know, just so great. But he's worked with a
- 25:23Speaker 3: ton of different like amazing people. And so when he
- 25:26Speaker 3: heard that there was going to be a Dolomite movie,
- 25:29Speaker 3: like he's like, he's like me and my friends watched
- 25:31Speaker 3: like Dolomite and Human Tornado and all that stuff. all
- 25:34Speaker 3: the time when he was growing up in Michigan. And
- 25:36Speaker 3: so he was like, he's like, he's like pitched real hard.
- 25:38Speaker 3: And he's like, he's like, listen, I've worked with Terrence Malick.
- 25:41Speaker 3: I've worked with Christopher Guest. I want to work on
- 25:43Speaker 3: the Dolomite movie and like was able to like provide
- 25:46Speaker 3: really good locations for me. I think he's up for
- 25:48Speaker 3: an award for it too, which is really exciting. So
- 25:49Speaker 3: it was like to, and it was a culmination for me,
- 25:51Speaker 3: Ed Wood, my favorite movie of all time. And it's
- 25:54Speaker 3: like about just, you know, just doing it, just DIY.
- 25:57Speaker 3: And it like, it also fed into like my punk
- 25:59Speaker 3: rock ethos of.
- 26:00Speaker 5: Just, yeah, there, there's such a bunch of misfits. Yes.
- 26:03Speaker 5: And the rest of society, it looks at them.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Like, what the hell are you? And that's every society
- 26:09Speaker 3: is Sarah Jessica Parker at the rap party. It's like,
- 26:12Speaker 3: you people are making shit.
- 26:15Speaker 5: So yeah, that's every misfit kid out there.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 26:18Speaker 5: These guys, these, this is my group right here.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:21Speaker 3: And that's, that's how I felt like, so it was
- 26:22Speaker 3: so beautiful. Like I like teared up a bit because
- 26:24Speaker 3: it's like, I'm like, there's a new Ed Wood, essentially,
- 26:28Speaker 3: a movie. And my favorite movie. So there's a new
- 26:30Speaker 3: version of it, essentially. And I'm with my friend who
- 26:33Speaker 3: worked on the movie. It's all that stuff that I
- 26:36Speaker 3: always wanted. And that's what I loved so much about
- 26:38Speaker 3: when I got into playing in bands when I was
- 26:40Speaker 3: a kid. It was a bunch of people doing stuff
- 26:42Speaker 3: just because they love it. And that's what I've been
- 26:45Speaker 3: trying to do with everything I've done. That's why I
- 26:49Speaker 3: think I shied away from stand-up so much for years,
- 26:52Speaker 3: where I just kind of maybe did it a little half-assed.
- 26:55Speaker 3: for a long time because it was so solitary.
- 26:58Speaker 5: There's not a teamwork effort going on.
- 27:00Speaker 3: It's like for me, it's, I listened to this interview
- 27:03Speaker 3: of Ian McKay from Bugazi, my thread and whatever. And
- 27:06Speaker 3: he talked about how it's like music for him has
- 27:08Speaker 3: always just been like a way to communicate. And, and like,
- 27:12Speaker 3: he's like, not just communicate like ideas, but communicate between people,
- 27:15Speaker 3: between a band and between an audience at a band.
- 27:18Speaker 3: And like, just to like, it's like, Hey, we're all here.
- 27:20Speaker 3: We're all doing this thing. We're all part of this thing.
- 27:22Speaker 3: And that's when he said that I was like, Oh,
- 27:23Speaker 3: I think that's what I like about, like production bands
- 27:27Speaker 3: showbiz stuff it's like you know it's it's just a
- 27:29Speaker 3: way this is the way i like to communicate with
- 27:31Speaker 3: people like right here we're having like a great conversation
- 27:33Speaker 3: which could easily happen just hanging out yeah but like
- 27:36Speaker 3: it doesn't normally it doesn't normally no no not too much.
- 27:39Speaker 5: That's that's one of the same reasons i keep it's
- 27:42Speaker 5: like this is the only time i talk to people
- 27:44Speaker 5: like the rest of my life is just whatever yeah
- 27:47Speaker 5: yeah exactly so it's like seeking out people that we
- 27:50Speaker 5: have kind of just enough common interest to be like
- 27:53Speaker 5: okay here we go and like occasionally there's more a
- 27:56Speaker 5: little extra but yeah yeah yeah but yeah even like
- 27:58Speaker 5: people that are just like are like artists i i've
- 28:01Speaker 5: realized is like kind of what i'm drawn to like
- 28:03Speaker 5: people that don't have an appreciation for that like i
- 28:06Speaker 5: usually don't have anything to talk to you about yeah
- 28:08Speaker 5: but if you're just even if you're because that's i
- 28:10Speaker 5: always have like visual artists on and i'll bring musicians
- 28:13Speaker 5: on so it doesn't even have to be like a
- 28:14Speaker 5: movie actor but it's that creativity and that like outlook
- 28:18Speaker 5: that like, it's that bond that, yeah, it leads to that.
- 28:22Speaker 3: It's really, it's just, you know, it's, it's my, it's
- 28:24Speaker 3: my religion. It's my, like, it's, it's what, you know,
- 28:28Speaker 3: I get excited about. And, you know, my, my wife
- 28:32Speaker 3: will always make fun of me where, when I get
- 28:34Speaker 3: real drunk, like, I don't get like sad. I don't
- 28:38Speaker 3: get angry. She's like, she's always like, it'll be one
- 28:41Speaker 3: of those things where I'm like, how was I last night?
- 28:43Speaker 3: I know I got, I got a little drunk. She's like,
- 28:44Speaker 3: She's like, oh, you know, typical here comes drunk Jonah
- 28:48Speaker 3: here to talk about art and friendship. It's just the
- 28:52Speaker 3: drunk philosopher.
- 28:52Speaker 5: It's just sappy. Artistic and savvy.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 28:56Speaker 5: It was the greatest thing ever.
- 28:57Speaker 2: But I love it.
- 28:57Speaker 3: It's like, we're all here. We're just doing it. We're
- 28:59Speaker 3: all doing our best. And then we're friends. And we're
- 29:01Speaker 3: also doing stuff. And that thing you did was so cool.
- 29:03Speaker 3: And I'm so glad you came to my thing.
- 29:06Speaker 5: See, I wish more people had that attitude. That's usually
- 29:09Speaker 5: not how it goes.
- 29:10Speaker 2: No, no.
- 29:10Speaker 3: But everyone, you need those sharks in the water.
- 29:14Speaker 5: Just to balance it out.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. That's another thing about the stand-up scene that
- 29:19Speaker 3: I was like, so many, like the competition aspect between guys.
- 29:22Speaker 3: And that's why I always... Stayed away from the clubs,
- 29:24Speaker 3: like the comedy clubs.
- 29:25Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 29:26Speaker 3: And just like the sniping and the, you know.
- 29:29Speaker 5: That's the thing. And it's funny, the people that I've
- 29:32Speaker 5: talked to that are more successful, maybe this, I'm saying
- 29:36Speaker 5: that pretend. it's funny that they're usually really cool and
- 29:40Speaker 5: really like laid back and the people that are up
- 29:43Speaker 5: and comers are like just horrible what little time I've
- 29:47Speaker 5: been around and I'm like maybe this is why they're
- 29:49Speaker 5: making it because they're good to people and you're kind
- 29:52Speaker 5: of being an asshole.
- 29:53Speaker 3: And everyone's scared and that's all it really comes down
- 29:57Speaker 3: to it's like That was always my take on things.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Like the past few years as I get older, it's
- 30:02Speaker 3: like I kind of go, oh, like I reacted this
- 30:05Speaker 3: way or I was this way because I was scared.
- 30:07Speaker 3: And it's almost kind of like Kamala says a joke
- 30:09Speaker 3: where it's like– we talked about this on stage. Like
- 30:13Speaker 3: our theory is that like so much– so many– there's
- 30:15Speaker 3: so many bad people and there's so many bad things
- 30:17Speaker 3: that happen in the world because people are scared or dehydrated.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Because everyone needs to like– it's like be less scared
- 30:24Speaker 3: and drink more water.
- 30:25Speaker 5: Here, just we'll hand out water.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 30:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Um but uh yeah it's uh you know that stuff
- 30:31Speaker 3: is um it's it's there it's there in any kind
- 30:34Speaker 3: of business because there's when there's money involved and that's
- 30:37Speaker 3: that's the thing that kind of that's the corruptor.
- 30:39Speaker 5: And that yeah i mean that is the hardest part
- 30:42Speaker 5: to deal with with being an artist is because it
- 30:44Speaker 5: still completely has to be run by money unless you're
- 30:47Speaker 5: just sitting in your basement doing what you want to
- 30:49Speaker 5: do which is fine but if you even try to
- 30:52Speaker 5: just barely market yourself it becomes okay now how do
- 30:55Speaker 5: i oh yeah how can i afford to keep doing
- 30:57Speaker 5: this how do i afford to take this somewhere and
- 31:00Speaker 5: show it to other people and hopefully they'll give me
- 31:02Speaker 5: money yeah like no it's it's.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Tough like there's times where i kind of just go
- 31:07Speaker 3: maybe i'll i don't know maybe i'll just back it
- 31:09Speaker 3: up and go be a bartender somewhere uh because i
- 31:13Speaker 3: like you know because i like talking to people.
- 31:14Speaker 5: It's good to have a fallback plan yeah.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Yeah and um because it's a lot of hard work
- 31:18Speaker 3: and it's scary because it's like you know you you
- 31:21Speaker 3: build yourself up and you have this narrative in your
- 31:23Speaker 3: head about what your career is and you go, you know, like,
- 31:28Speaker 3: it's like, well, if I stop now, people are going
- 31:30Speaker 3: to go, he probably almost just hit it big, but
- 31:34Speaker 3: he didn't have the follow through.
- 31:35Speaker 5: You were close to your shot, but you didn't do it.
- 31:39Speaker 3: And this is like in like, you know, 2002 is
- 31:42Speaker 3: when I started. So, you know, in a few years,
- 31:44Speaker 3: it's going to be 20 years when I started doing stuff.
- 31:48Speaker 3: And it's like, you know, like, Is it, you know, like,
- 31:52Speaker 3: what's the, it's, I always, you know, my friend, all
- 31:55Speaker 3: comics always have, like, they'll say, like, you know, Rodney
- 31:57Speaker 3: Dangerfield and all that kind of stuff. But, like, the
- 32:00Speaker 3: one I'm looking at right now is, I was like, well,
- 32:02Speaker 3: you know, Nick Offerman was, like, around forever. Like, he
- 32:05Speaker 3: was around for years and years and years and years.
- 32:08Speaker 5: I think I had him on one time. And I
- 32:11Speaker 5: was like, and I'm referencing movies, but I'm like, you're still, like, you're, like.
- 32:17Speaker 5: mid thirties in this movie. And this is early on
- 32:19Speaker 5: for you.
- 32:20Speaker 3: And it was, and it wasn't until he got the
- 32:23Speaker 3: part on parks and rec that just, he became an icon.
- 32:26Speaker 5: Cause I'm the one going, remember when you were in
- 32:28Speaker 5: that werewolf movie and you've got like one line and
- 32:30Speaker 5: he's like, yeah, kind of.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:33Speaker 3: Jeff Garland has tons of those too.
- 32:35Speaker 5: Like weird little, Yeah, he was around forever before, and
- 32:38Speaker 5: now he's on a sitcom.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, yeah.
- 32:41Speaker 5: You never know when it's going to kick in, I guess.
- 32:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and I always have this hit thing in my
- 32:45Speaker 3: head where I'm like, and not to say that I
- 32:48Speaker 3: don't feel successful. I know I've gotten to do a
- 32:51Speaker 3: ton of stuff, but when one of your best pals
- 32:55Speaker 3: is currently shooting a Marvel movie.
- 32:59Speaker 5: He almost made it. He got so close. He got
- 33:03Speaker 5: to Marvel, but he couldn't really break through.
- 33:05Speaker 3: He didn't also do DC.
- 33:08Speaker 5: If you just signed on with Disney +, your whole
- 33:11Speaker 5: world will come together.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 33:40Speaker 2: It's intermission time. So how about taking a break? Get
- 33:43Speaker 2: out and stretch a little and relax before the show
- 33:46Speaker 2: begins again. And why not make it refreshment time, too?
- 33:50Speaker 2: We have lots of tasty, delicious treats waiting for you
- 33:54Speaker 2: at the refreshment center.
- 34:03Speaker 5: Don't you guys like horror?
- 34:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 34:06Speaker 5: Don't you think everybody should join the Meltketeer Horror Club?
- 34:10Speaker 3: Yes.
- 34:11Speaker 5: I think you should go to MovieMeltdown.com right now and

- 34:44Speaker 5: I mean really. Don't you want to be cool? All
- 34:46Speaker 5: the cool kids are doing it. Okay, wait, just by
- 34:49Speaker 5: being a movie geek, you're already not a cool kid, and.
- 34:52Speaker 4: Neither are we.
- 34:52Speaker 5: So all the geeks are doing it. Join the club now.

- 35:16Speaker 5: That's all you need to listen to the episodes. So,
- 35:18Speaker 5: I mean, it kind of keeps us alive. I was
- 35:21Speaker 5: discussing the horrible situation it's been to try to keep
- 35:25Speaker 5: things going earlier to these poor bastards. Like, yeah, it's
- 35:30Speaker 5: not just like, hey, I'm rich and I want your
- 35:32Speaker 5: money anyway. It's, It really does keep the show going
- 35:36Speaker 5: to the level that people don't realize. It's kind of
- 35:39Speaker 5: the only way it's survived this last year and a
- 35:41Speaker 5: half or so since we started this.
- 35:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:45Speaker 5: So it is not only greatly appreciated, but it gives
- 35:49Speaker 5: us kind of a good way to come up with
- 35:52Speaker 5: something specific to put out there just for these people
- 35:55Speaker 5: that we don't. no actually care enough to kick in.
- 35:58Speaker 3: So you get a lot of great stuff for that too.
- 35:59Speaker 5: That's what I'm saying. I like, I like being able
- 36:02Speaker 5: to craft something for a very special group. So you
- 36:04Speaker 5: guys are super cool. And then you get these awesome episodes.

- 36:45Speaker 7: Yes, the universe will never be the same.
- 36:47Speaker 4: I guess we've learned not to toy with the laws
- 36:49Speaker 4: of television.
- 36:50Speaker 8: It's Mystery Science Theater 3000 Sunday. Out of this world entertainment.

- 37:55Speaker 6: this substandard coffee.
- 37:57Speaker 5: There Right there. Yeah, yeah, you heard it.
- 38:00Speaker 6: And then let's run out, jump in the car, and

- 39:14Speaker 10: Movie Meltdown.
- 39:23Speaker 7: That's part of your problem, you know.
- 39:24Speaker 2: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 39:26Speaker 1: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 39:29Speaker 2: And now.
- 39:30Speaker 8: movies.
- 39:30Speaker 2: And now, on with the show.
- 39:33Speaker 11: I've got this epic problem.
- 39:38Speaker 2: This epic problem's not a problem for me.
- 39:41Speaker 5: And inside, I know I'm broken. But I'm working as far.
- 39:46Speaker 2: As you can see.
- 40:00Speaker 3: But uh yeah um i think we've digressed quite a
- 40:03Speaker 3: bit but uh well.
- 40:04Speaker 5: That's that's kind of what i was because you've you've
- 40:06Speaker 5: crossed over now into so many things as you were
- 40:08Speaker 5: getting into it did you have a plan like you
- 40:11Speaker 5: because you started i guess the most functional thing would
- 40:14Speaker 5: have been bands early on so.
- 40:15Speaker 3: Yeah i mean i was i was playing punk band
- 40:17Speaker 3: hawaii and i i came out to la and i
- 40:20Speaker 3: wanted to like I wanted to be in showbiz.
- 40:23Speaker 5: So you really didn't have a specific.
- 40:25Speaker 3: I wanted to act and I wanted to direct and
- 40:27Speaker 3: I wanted to do comedy. I wanted to be like...
- 40:31Speaker 3: As a kid, I was just like, I want to be...
- 40:34Speaker 3: Of course, I'm like Mr. Sensator, but it was gone.
- 40:35Speaker 3: So I was like, I want to be on SNL.
- 40:38Speaker 3: And I went to a Groundlings entry course to see
- 40:42Speaker 3: where you start off in their classes. And I was
- 40:47Speaker 3: so– like I thought I was going to be surrounded.
- 40:48Speaker 3: I thought I was going to finally find my people
- 40:50Speaker 3: where I was like, oh, what's your favorite SCTV sketch?
- 40:55Speaker 3: And someone just going, I don't know, man. I'm here
- 40:57Speaker 3: because my agent said I need to take improv. I go, oh, okay. Oh, hey,
- 41:00Speaker 3: I've seen you in a ton of TV stuff. What
- 41:02Speaker 3: are you doing here? He's like, I don't know, man.
- 41:04Speaker 3: The work– his business sucks.
- 41:05Speaker 5: I go, uh-oh. So you hear about that when you
- 41:08Speaker 5: get those old ones and it's like, they'll name off
- 41:10Speaker 5: the like six or eight people that were like all
- 41:13Speaker 5: in the groundlings at the same wave. And you're like, well,
- 41:17Speaker 5: they were all like, and they became best friends and
- 41:19Speaker 5: they were all on stuff together. So yeah, you're hoping
- 41:22Speaker 5: for that. And instead you get everyone that doesn't give
- 41:25Speaker 5: a shit about the industry.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. And there was probably like a good handful
- 41:28Speaker 3: of people there that didn't really talk to me or
- 41:30Speaker 3: I didn't talk to him cause we were scared.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:32Speaker 5: That's, that's a pretty, pretty heavy, uh, vein running through
- 41:36Speaker 5: all these stories.
- 41:37Speaker 3: Um, but, uh, you know, that's why I love the movie, uh,
- 41:40Speaker 3: defending your life.
- 41:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:41Speaker 3: Just cause it's all about like, it's like, did you
- 41:43Speaker 3: live a life without fear?
- 41:45Speaker 5: That's, I mean, that's him in general. Like he's got
- 41:48Speaker 5: so much of that running through him that like in
- 41:51Speaker 5: so many movies of his that you get how afraid
- 41:55Speaker 5: he is to do anything.
- 41:56Speaker 3: Yeah. It's what's, it's a, it's almost my wife's kind
- 41:58Speaker 3: of favorite, um, her favorite aspect of any of the,
- 42:01Speaker 3: like Joseph Campbell stuff. She was like, the refusal, refusing
- 42:06Speaker 3: the call to action. And she's like, that's always my
- 42:09Speaker 3: favorite part of any story. And that's why there's a
- 42:14Speaker 3: movie starring Crispin Glover called Bartleby. I know of it.
- 42:20Speaker 3: And it's like, no matter what the task is, it's like, Bartleby,
- 42:25Speaker 3: can you go and grab a thing? And he's like, ah!
- 42:27Speaker 3: He takes it like it's someone asking him to do
- 42:30Speaker 3: a quest. And he can't do it If someone asks
- 42:32Speaker 3: him to do something, he can't take that call to action.
- 42:35Speaker 3: But yeah, so it's like I really thought– and so–
- 42:39Speaker 3: and I got bummed out where I just kind of
- 42:40Speaker 3: like– I was like maybe I was wrong about doing
- 42:43Speaker 3: this stuff. I thought I wanted to do– I thought
- 42:45Speaker 3: like comedy would be my entry into TV, into movies,
- 42:49Speaker 3: into directing. And then– I just kind of lived in Pedro.
- 42:53Speaker 3: I knew some people in punk bands down in San Pedro,
- 42:55Speaker 3: and I just kind of hung out and drank there
- 42:58Speaker 3: and roadied for bands and kind of played with some bands.
- 43:00Speaker 3: And I was sad. I was sad because I moved
- 43:04Speaker 3: out here, and I didn't do the thing that I
- 43:07Speaker 3: moved out to L.A.
- 43:08Speaker 4: For.
- 43:08Speaker 5: Which happens to a lot of people.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 43:10Speaker 5: There's only so many that really do. And you do
- 43:12Speaker 5: get– because I've seen people that, like, move away. And
- 43:15Speaker 5: then four years later, they're back again. And it didn't
- 43:19Speaker 5: work out.
- 43:19Speaker 3: The whole L.A. thing does– not for me, man. It
- 43:21Speaker 3: didn't work out.
- 43:22Speaker 5: Which I think is true, actually. I think the ones
- 43:24Speaker 5: that come back, that's probably not– I mean, if you
- 43:27Speaker 5: were going to follow through with it, you would have
- 43:29Speaker 5: done it. But you're back here now. So it probably
- 43:32Speaker 5: isn't really for you.
- 43:33Speaker 3: And sometimes it really works out. Like– like Zach Alphanack
- 43:37Speaker 3: is like, he had like a show in VH1 and
- 43:39Speaker 3: like it flamed out. And then he moved to, he
- 43:41Speaker 3: moved back to South Carolina or North Carolina. He moved back. Yeah.
- 43:44Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 43:45Speaker 3: And like, um, and then that's like stuff started picking up.
- 43:48Speaker 3: Nate Bargatze, he like was living in LA for a bit.
- 43:51Speaker 3: And then like, he was just like, he's like, he's like,
- 43:52Speaker 3: I fucking hate this place. And like, so he moved
- 43:54Speaker 3: back and just like hit the road. And now he's
- 43:57Speaker 3: like a huge, he's like one of the big guys now.
- 43:59Speaker 3: It's like him and John Mulaney are like, it's like,
- 44:01Speaker 3: you know, it's a, like the news you know the
- 44:04Speaker 3: new crowd of you know like big comics and and
- 44:07Speaker 3: you know those that that happens sometimes people like move back.
- 44:10Speaker 5: Especially now because everything shifted even by the time you
- 44:14Speaker 5: were there it was still pretty focused of like you
- 44:16Speaker 5: know if you're going to these careers you go to
- 44:19Speaker 5: la if you're going to these you go to new
- 44:20Speaker 5: york that's pretty much it yeah you can maybe fall
- 44:23Speaker 5: to chicago and maybe be marginally successful like there was
- 44:27Speaker 5: no other options like Where now every town has a
- 44:30Speaker 5: version of what's going on and everybody can kind of find, hopefully,
- 44:34Speaker 5: where they fit into that little part of it. Even
- 44:36Speaker 5: if you're a smaller cog in a smaller machine. One
- 44:40Speaker 5: of the directors I talked to here in town left
- 44:45Speaker 5: and then within six weeks was back shooting a movie
- 44:49Speaker 5: again in my town. And I was like, wait, what?
- 44:51Speaker 5: did you know? Cause I was started seeing him post
- 44:54Speaker 5: pictures like, wait, so now you're back here shooting a
- 44:56Speaker 5: movie again.
- 44:57Speaker 3: That's incredible.
- 44:58Speaker 5: It's so, yeah, everybody's got this weird little market now that,
- 45:01Speaker 5: that just did not exist 20 years ago.
- 45:04Speaker 3: It's neat. And I, you know, it's a big part
- 45:06Speaker 3: of that I think is just a New York and
- 45:08Speaker 3: LA pricing, smaller productions out of being able to shoot there.
- 45:12Speaker 3: And then like all these, you know, towns and States
- 45:15Speaker 3: just going, shit, if we just give them some discounts,
- 45:17Speaker 3: they'll come out here. So then that's, Atlanta blows up.
- 45:20Speaker 3: Nashville starts to get more stuff. Louisiana, Minneapolis.
- 45:25Speaker 5: Austin kind of always was, but it became even bigger
- 45:28Speaker 5: once they realized how much they could do.
- 45:29Speaker 3: When tech moved in then, there was just a lot
- 45:32Speaker 3: of VC guys. I was like, I'll pay for your movie.
- 45:36Speaker 3: Like you said, that's the thing me and my wife
- 45:39Speaker 3: talk about a lot. We love LA, but there's always
- 45:41Speaker 3: that thing of just like, I don't know, Austin.
- 45:45Speaker 5: There's a lot of other options now.
- 45:47Speaker 3: There are, yeah.
- 45:48Speaker 5: So that, yeah, I think especially, you know, now that
- 45:50Speaker 5: so much of it's internet based too, it's like even
- 45:53Speaker 5: as specifically a musician, but as a comedian, like you
- 45:56Speaker 5: can find other ways to spread the word about yourself.
- 45:59Speaker 5: It doesn't always work because the internet is overwhelmingly, again,
- 46:03Speaker 5: my constant reference is it's an ocean.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:05Speaker 5: You just throw your. A little teacup of whatever it
- 46:08Speaker 5: is you're doing out there.
- 46:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:10Speaker 5: Most of the time it's lost. But it can work
- 46:13Speaker 5: out sometimes.
- 46:13Speaker 3: It can. It can. And it's always a fluke when
- 46:17Speaker 3: it happens. It's good. A lot of people work hard.
- 46:19Speaker 3: A lot of people have a great particular voice. It
- 46:22Speaker 3: just depends on if it gets seen. And you can't.
- 46:25Speaker 3: There's so much out of your control.
- 46:26Speaker 5: You can't force anything. Again, you can't make a viral video.
- 46:29Speaker 3: No, exactly.
- 46:30Speaker 5: You're never going to– no matter how hard you want
- 46:32Speaker 5: it to be, it doesn't work that way.
- 46:34Speaker 3: Just think about all the tweets you see that blow
- 46:36Speaker 3: up and then people going, whoa, this really blew up.
- 46:38Speaker 3: It's like people– Yeah, duh.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:40Speaker 5: That's how it works.
- 46:41Speaker 3: That's how it works. It's like– and then you look
- 46:43Speaker 3: at the other tweets. You're like, that is good. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:46Speaker 3: It's like some people can– and that's always the big
- 46:48Speaker 3: thing about being a comedy writer. It's like– and people,
- 46:51Speaker 3: it's like– It's like, you know, like, this guy's really brilliant.
- 46:53Speaker 3: Why doesn't he get more work as a comedy writer?
- 46:55Speaker 3: It's like, well, it's because as a comedy writer, you
- 46:57Speaker 3: have to just be able to, like, deliver consistently all
- 47:01Speaker 3: the time. As opposed to just having these strokes of
- 47:03Speaker 3: brilliance where you make a thing and everyone's like, this
- 47:05Speaker 3: is amazing. You know, so it's really, I don't know,
- 47:10Speaker 3: the whole thing is tricky. But, like, the reason I
- 47:13Speaker 3: even started doing stand-up was just because it was, it
- 47:17Speaker 3: was like, I'm in L.A. and I can't figure out
- 47:20Speaker 3: how to get involved.
- 47:21Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 47:22Speaker 3: Like, it's just this giant orb, and I don't see
- 47:25Speaker 3: an entrance. And some of them are, like, real high up.
- 47:28Speaker 3: And I'm like, I don't know. I didn't go to school.
- 47:30Speaker 3: I'm not going to college. You know, I don't know
- 47:34Speaker 3: how to– what, mailroom? I don't know.
- 47:37Speaker 5: That's where you start.
- 47:38Speaker 3: Yeah. And UCB wasn't out there yet. And I even
- 47:41Speaker 3: had these ideas of maybe, like, maybe I'll go to
- 47:42Speaker 3: New York and go to UCB. Maybe that's the one
- 47:44Speaker 3: that's– you know. And so I just– I was like,
- 47:47Speaker 3: what if I just– what if it was– like stand up.
- 47:50Speaker 3: What if I just went and like, cause like, it's like,
- 47:52Speaker 3: I can go to a coffee shop and sign up
- 47:54Speaker 3: for an open mic and then I'm on stage and
- 47:56Speaker 3: then like, holy shit, I just found this back entrance
- 47:59Speaker 3: into the world of showbiz. And, and it was, I
- 48:02Speaker 3: was like, I was like, cause that's, you're doing it.
- 48:04Speaker 3: All of a sudden you're in LA and you're performing.
- 48:06Speaker 3: Does the scale.
- 48:08Speaker 5: It is a show regardless. Whether it's you and five
- 48:11Speaker 5: people sitting in there or you're at a stadium.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:13Speaker 5: It's still your show.
- 48:15Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. So you're just, you kind of just like,
- 48:17Speaker 3: I was like, oh, okay. And then it like, it
- 48:19Speaker 3: kind of, I got an okay response and I kind
- 48:22Speaker 3: of got the bug and it just kind of, I
- 48:24Speaker 3: kept on following that thing. And I always kind of
- 48:25Speaker 3: follow these tracks and, you know, like I got into
- 48:28Speaker 3: like writing for like, I got, you know, got into
- 48:32Speaker 3: comedy writing and then some stuff happened. But then like,
- 48:34Speaker 3: I remember I was writing for a show at G4
- 48:38Speaker 3: and then, like because G4 and E networks were like,
- 48:41Speaker 3: you know, like the same network essentially, just different channels,
- 48:44Speaker 3: different content, but same production.
- 48:46Speaker 5: All the same big companies.
- 48:47Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 48:47Speaker 5: Which is what keeps happening more and more.
- 48:50Speaker 3: Yeah, the Comcast, which was bought by Universal, which was
- 48:52Speaker 3: bought by, and so on and so forth. But like,
- 48:55Speaker 3: I remember like, I knew how to like produce and
- 48:58Speaker 3: direct bits and write stuff and I was doing it
- 49:02Speaker 3: for comedy at G4 and then someone was like, hey,
- 49:03Speaker 3: we need someone to like, we need someone funny to do,
- 49:07Speaker 3: to produce stuff This E's 50 most insane celebrity oops countdown.
- 49:12Speaker 3: And I was like, I didn't have any work coming up.
- 49:14Speaker 3: So I was just like, yeah, I'll do it. Like,
- 49:16Speaker 3: you know, sure. And it's a miserable experience.
- 49:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 49:20Speaker 3: Like i had to sit in a room next to
- 49:22Speaker 3: a camera and pointed out like cory feldman and be
- 49:24Speaker 3: like hey what do you.
- 49:25Speaker 5: I'm sorry yeah i've seen enough of him to know
- 49:29Speaker 5: that yeah no that's no fun.
- 49:30Speaker 3: It's no fun and then like it's like and then
- 49:32Speaker 3: like andy dick and like it's all these people and
- 49:33Speaker 3: you're just like asking just you know just like.
- 49:36Speaker 5: What do you think of going down the list That's
- 49:38Speaker 5: how all of their shows were really. So it's got
- 49:40Speaker 5: to be an editing nightmare more than anything.
- 49:42Speaker 2: And it is.
- 49:43Speaker 3: And that was a huge process. And I had to
- 49:44Speaker 3: sit in with that. And I remember just being miserable
- 49:46Speaker 3: and just like, all right, well, we're talking about Tiger Woods,
- 49:50Speaker 3: having that girl come over to have an affair with him.
- 49:54Speaker 3: Corey Feldman makes like a pizza man delivery joke. So
- 49:58Speaker 3: let's do a ding dong sound. And then we'll do
- 50:00Speaker 3: like a pizza wipe. We'll have a pizza roll by.
- 50:03Speaker 3: And then that's how we'll swap over to– queer film
- 50:05Speaker 3: because you're just trying to figure out how.
- 50:06Speaker 5: To now we're in reality bites hold on yeah.
- 50:08Speaker 3: Yeah yeah exactly.
- 50:10Speaker 5: Cheesy producer mode hold on i can make this work.
- 50:12Speaker 3: Yeah and like i was and it was just like
- 50:14Speaker 3: a lot of that where i'm like i okay what
- 50:16Speaker 3: about this um which is a fun part of any
- 50:19Speaker 3: production is just the constant puzzle solving yeah um and
- 50:24Speaker 3: that's that's always fine like uh but.
- 50:26Speaker 5: Where had you picked all that up was that just
- 50:28Speaker 5: from comedy writing or.
- 50:29Speaker 3: From comedy writing and then um Making videos with my
- 50:34Speaker 3: friends Peter Tensio and Neil Mahoney and just kind of
- 50:38Speaker 3: like– we made this web series called The Freeloader's Guide
- 50:41Speaker 3: to Easy Living and like we just– like we wanted
- 50:45Speaker 3: to layer as much weird comedy on top of it
- 50:48Speaker 3: as we could. And so that's kind of how I
- 50:51Speaker 3: started getting a mind for– That stuff.
- 50:53Speaker 5: But again, the industry changing just like you're right on
- 50:56Speaker 5: that crest of it each time of like because you
- 50:59Speaker 5: even 10, 15 years before you wouldn't have had the
- 51:01Speaker 5: technology to be able to do that.
- 51:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:04Speaker 5: Right at that point, you can already like because that's
- 51:06Speaker 5: so much that has changed in the industry. It's like
- 51:08Speaker 5: back in the olden days, you know, you couldn't make
- 51:10Speaker 5: your own anything. Like you had to sit around and
- 51:12Speaker 5: wait for some billionaire to green light this whole project
- 51:16Speaker 5: to put all these people into play.
- 51:17Speaker 3: Now you can just pick up your phone.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:18Speaker 5: Now you just do it yourself.
- 51:20Speaker 3: I always think about this a lot. It was like
- 51:23Speaker 3: 2002 in the comedy scene where the M-Bar scene, which
- 51:25Speaker 3: would eventually become known as Comedy Bang Bang. And it
- 51:30Speaker 3: didn't have a name yet. It was just this Tuesday
- 51:32Speaker 3: nights at the M-Bar. And it was my generation, my
- 51:35Speaker 3: little scene of like open micers that we kind of
- 51:37Speaker 3: got folded into. you know these this these guys from
- 51:40Speaker 3: mr show and whatnot like it's a and it was
- 51:42Speaker 3: uh it was me it was morgan murphy who's now
- 51:44Speaker 3: like like a huge time writer showrunner um uh and
- 51:49Speaker 3: she was there part of that scene uh it was
- 51:51Speaker 3: uh dan mince who does tina and buzz burgers and
- 51:53Speaker 3: it was bj novak uh and it was um uh
- 51:57Speaker 3: and he was hanging out but it was uh alan
- 51:59Speaker 3: yang uh who would go on to uh make um
- 52:04Speaker 3: Master of None with a Z's and stuff like that.
- 52:05Speaker 5: But like, it's like, but they're all Harvard friends. This
- 52:06Speaker 5: is your, your UCB kids.
- 52:08Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:09Speaker 5: It just took a few extra years.
- 52:10Speaker 3: But you know what the weird thing is about that
- 52:13Speaker 3: is that like, I still felt, I didn't feel like
- 52:15Speaker 3: I was a part of that. Cause I, like, I
- 52:16Speaker 3: remember we were all at, after Nova Mike, everyone was
- 52:18Speaker 3: talking about college and like, and they're like, where'd you go?
- 52:20Speaker 3: I was like, I didn't. And they're like, oh, that's cool, man.
- 52:23Speaker 3: And I was like, no, I know we're all, we are,
- 52:25Speaker 3: We're all at the same pizza place after the same
- 52:27Speaker 3: coffee shop open, Mike.
- 52:28Speaker 5: We all did the same show. Do you think everybody
- 52:31Speaker 5: felt– I mean do you think– go back in time
- 52:33Speaker 5: and Farley sitting there going, I don't know. One of
- 52:36Speaker 5: these days I'm going to amount to something.
- 52:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so. I think everyone has that fear.
- 52:42Speaker 3: I was even– I'm buds through music with Chris Candy,
- 52:47Speaker 3: who's John Candy's son. But he's like a big ska guy.
- 52:51Speaker 3: And like we were hanging out because his band– when
- 52:54Speaker 3: I was in Hawaii, his band, the Bruce Lee band
- 52:56Speaker 3: with Mike Park, like they were playing in Hawaii. And
- 52:58Speaker 3: so we were chatting and then we're just like– because
- 53:01Speaker 3: he does some acting stuff. He does music. He kind
- 53:03Speaker 3: of went to school for music production and like– but
- 53:05Speaker 3: we're– and we're all just talking about careers and whatnot.
- 53:08Speaker 3: And he talked about– he's like, yeah, even like– I
- 53:11Speaker 3: remember my dad like even shortly before he died was
- 53:14Speaker 3: just like stressing out about what his next job was
- 53:16Speaker 3: going to be. I was like, John Candy?
- 53:18Speaker 5: Like– That is one of those, I just was listening
- 53:22Speaker 5: to something and they were talking about how much we
- 53:24Speaker 5: probably missed out on that. Like, he was getting to
- 53:27Speaker 5: the point of getting kind of into dramatic roles.
- 53:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:30Speaker 5: And it's like, we kind of missed that, like, second
- 53:33Speaker 5: wave that he would have had. Like, when, so again,
- 53:35Speaker 5: when like Tarantino cast him in something or, you know,
- 53:38Speaker 5: he gets this big push to be a dramatic actor
- 53:40Speaker 5: because he had it in.
- 53:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:41Speaker 5: He was so talented.
- 53:43Speaker 3: I think, you know, I think it's, I mean, it's
- 53:46Speaker 3: a totally different situation. Like, it's like, I was gonna
- 53:49Speaker 3: say like, Chris Farley, I think, could have became one
- 53:51Speaker 3: of the best dramatic actors. There's a lot of darkness
- 53:56Speaker 3: in there. Yeah.
- 53:57Speaker 5: No surprise.
- 53:58Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. He just shoved it all too much in there.
- 54:02Speaker 3: But you can't compare them because one was a heart
- 54:05Speaker 3: attack because he smoked cigarettes.
- 54:07Speaker 5: And a very different approach to the industry. John was
- 54:11Speaker 5: so sort of traditional about it versus the rock star
- 54:14Speaker 5: life that Farley went through.
- 54:15Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. The bad boys of SNL era.
- 54:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:20Speaker 3: Um so yeah it was uh it was it's everyone's
- 54:23Speaker 3: kind of like yeah but it's like that whole scene
- 54:25Speaker 3: i remember um you know we're all there and they're
- 54:27Speaker 3: like you know bj nova everyone knew bj bj like
- 54:30Speaker 3: a joke that jared grody made about bj novak was
- 54:32Speaker 3: um bj novak came to hollywood with just the shirt
- 54:36Speaker 3: on his back and the directions to the staff writing
- 54:38Speaker 3: job on a network sitcom helps a little yeah they're
- 54:43Speaker 3: all harvard lampoon guys but uh me and mince became
- 54:46Speaker 3: real good pals because he's from Alaska. We're like, Hey,
- 54:48Speaker 3: freak state guys, you know? Um, and, but, uh, I
- 54:52Speaker 3: remember I was like, we were all hanging out. I
- 54:53Speaker 3: was like, Oh, we should make a video. This is
- 54:56Speaker 3: like 2002, 2000. I was like, we should make a video.
- 54:58Speaker 3: And they're like, we could do a thing. We'll show
- 54:59Speaker 3: it at like the M bar show. Like, it's like,
- 55:02Speaker 3: we'll make a sketch or something like that. And like,
- 55:03Speaker 3: BJ's like, what? I was like, he's like, why? How,
- 55:07Speaker 3: what would we do with it? I was like, yeah,
- 55:09Speaker 3: we could, I like, I have a friend, I think
- 55:10Speaker 3: it is a projector and I can get some, like
- 55:12Speaker 3: a sheet and we can put it up and we
- 55:13Speaker 3: can project it.
- 55:14Speaker 5: This is very high tech.
- 55:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:15Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 55:16Speaker 3: Uh, some foam cores and like that. And like, uh,
- 55:18Speaker 3: he was like, he was like, but then you just
- 55:19Speaker 3: show it once and then that's it. I was like,
- 55:21Speaker 3: I don't know. And then I, I think about all
- 55:23Speaker 3: the times I wanted to make videos and I didn't.
- 55:25Speaker 3: And then YouTube came out and I, and I was like,
- 55:28Speaker 3: I would have had to catch on. I would have
- 55:30Speaker 3: had like, like a handful of videos to just drop
- 55:33Speaker 3: immediately on this thing.
- 55:34Speaker 5: And at the beginning when there wasn't much else, you
- 55:37Speaker 5: could have been getting half of the viewers cause they
- 55:38Speaker 5: don't have anything else.
- 55:39Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. And so I just kind of was like,
- 55:42Speaker 3: I did end up making a video. Like I was
- 55:44Speaker 3: making a, Neil Honey and BJ Porter, who was a
- 55:48Speaker 3: mystery show writer, was helping us out with it. But
- 55:51Speaker 3: it was– and like our friend Kulop is in it.
- 55:54Speaker 3: It's a good time. But it was a whole thing
- 55:56Speaker 3: where I'm doing stand-up on stage and then like some
- 55:59Speaker 3: guy heckles me and I go, hey, hey, man. I
- 56:01Speaker 3: was like, please don't do that. He's like, well, try
- 56:03Speaker 3: to be funny. I was like, I mean my friends
- 56:05Speaker 3: think I'm pretty funny. He's like, what do you mean?
- 56:08Speaker 3: I was like, well, I don't know. Maybe if we
- 56:09Speaker 3: were friends, you'd like my set more. He's like, so
- 56:11Speaker 3: should we go hang out? I go, yeah, let's go.
- 56:14Speaker 3: And then we walk out and then a video starts
- 56:16Speaker 3: of like us hanging out to Do You Believe in
- 56:17Speaker 3: Love by He Will Listen to the News. And then
- 56:19Speaker 3: like we come back in like arm in arm and like,
- 56:23Speaker 3: we did it. We made a friend tonight. But like, yeah,
- 56:27Speaker 3: it was like– but like it was– the video starts
- 56:29Speaker 3: with us specifically leaving out of the M Bar. So
- 56:32Speaker 3: it was just like we couldn't do it anywhere else
- 56:35Speaker 3: and we had already done it to that audience. So
- 56:37Speaker 3: like Novak was right in that regard.
- 56:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 56:41Speaker 5: Yeah, there's a way to make it work. He just
- 56:44Speaker 5: needs to open his mind.
- 56:45Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:45Speaker 5: Get on board. Come on. He'll never come out to anything.
- 56:48Speaker 3: But so I was always very much more comfortable making
- 56:50Speaker 3: videos and stuff like that. Like, you know, sending in
- 56:55Speaker 3: an edit bay after. You know, because editing stuff you've
- 56:58Speaker 3: done is basically the best form of time travel. Because
- 57:01Speaker 3: it's like you can go back. You can't physically interact
- 57:03Speaker 3: with anything, but you can manipulate the events.
- 57:05Speaker 5: You can manipulate quite a bit, actually.
- 57:07Speaker 3: You can drop a sandbag on some bullies. Mm-hmm.
- 57:12Speaker 5: So then I definitely wanted to get to, and I
- 57:14Speaker 5: know you've brought this up a lot, but specifically where
- 57:18Speaker 5: you ended up and how a lot of people know
- 57:20Speaker 5: you if they weren't into the comedy scene, the mystery
- 57:22Speaker 5: science theater thing. I mean, you got it. It's the
- 57:27Speaker 5: blessing and the curse because you got to do the
- 57:29Speaker 5: greatest thing ever.
- 57:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:30Speaker 5: But at the same time, every geek in America and
- 57:33Speaker 5: the world over, I feel like was like.
- 57:35Speaker 3: That son of a bitch. Oh, yeah. So many.
- 57:38Speaker 5: Everyone in life.
- 57:39Speaker 3: So many of the first interviews I had to do
- 57:41Speaker 3: after it was announced was just like, okay, well, before
- 57:43Speaker 3: we get started, you took my dream job. I was like,
- 57:46Speaker 3: I didn't take anything.
- 57:48Speaker 5: It's your fault.
- 57:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 57:51Speaker 3: It's, I knew, and I knew it. I knew it
- 57:54Speaker 3: was going to be, like, it's like when Joel asked me,
- 57:56Speaker 3: it was a dream come true. And then, but I
- 57:58Speaker 3: got so scared.
- 57:59Speaker 5: But how could you say no, really?
- 58:00Speaker 2: I would never say no.
- 58:01Speaker 3: It's literally what I always, like, you know.
- 58:03Speaker 5: Even if it goes down in flames, you'll be like, hey,
- 58:05Speaker 5: there was three guys in a jumpsuit.
- 58:06Speaker 4: I was one of them.
- 58:07Speaker 5: So, screw all you guys.
- 58:08Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 58:08Speaker 2: You know, it's like.
- 58:10Speaker 3: And so, like, when does this go out?
- 58:14Speaker 5: Within a week or so.
- 58:16Speaker 3: Okay. Because on Tuesday. Probably not before. Okay. Okay, great.
- 58:22Speaker 3: So Tuesday they're announcing that Netflix isn't picking up another season.
- 58:26Speaker 3: All right.
- 58:27Speaker 5: So it will have already been announced by then.
- 58:29Speaker 2: Yes.
- 58:29Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. But you got to scoop. And I beg
- 58:32Speaker 3: you to not tell anybody. I don't want this behavior.
- 58:35Speaker 5: But it is something.
- 58:36Speaker 3: It's like, you know, it's interesting because. That, you know,
- 58:41Speaker 3: they're announcing that. We've known for a bit. And a
- 58:44Speaker 3: lot of it has to do with, like, that Netflix
- 58:47Speaker 3: was getting rid of everything they didn't own.
- 58:49Speaker 5: That's what I was going to say. They've lost, I mean,
- 58:52Speaker 5: of their own hand. They've dumped a bunch of stuff
- 58:54Speaker 5: that they, even some of them that they did create.
- 58:57Speaker 5: And then, like, again, they're becoming a network now. Because
- 59:00Speaker 5: that's what the networks would do. Be like, six episodes,
- 59:02Speaker 5: cut it, got to go. They're getting to the point
- 59:05Speaker 5: that they're so big, they're such a huge machine that
- 59:08Speaker 5: they're just dropping stuff.
- 59:09Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 59:10Speaker 5: Even letting it find its audience.
- 59:11Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. And so I would have loved to do
- 59:14Speaker 3: one more, and who knows where it might end up.
- 59:16Speaker 3: We don't know.
- 59:18Speaker 5: There are a lot of options. There's a lot of options.
- 59:21Speaker 3: I've been begging them. I was like, let's go to Shudder.
- 59:24Speaker 3: We can stream an episode live. Not like shoot it live,
- 59:27Speaker 3: but stream it live right after a Joe Bob episode.
- 59:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:30Speaker 5: I mean, there's tons of bad horror. You can do
- 59:33Speaker 5: a whole season of nothing but horror.
- 59:36Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. And they've got tons of weird genre stuff there, too.
- 59:42Speaker 3: It's funny because that was always the big drop-off between Joel.
- 59:44Speaker 3: Joel grew up in a time where all the shitty
- 59:46Speaker 3: movies that were playing on TV were sci-fi.
- 59:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:49Speaker 3: Uh, I grew up in an era where all the
- 59:50Speaker 3: shitty movies playing on TV all the time were horror.
- 59:53Speaker 5: There's a lot to choose from in both.
- 59:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:55Speaker 5: But yeah, it's, yeah.
- 59:57Speaker 3: Um, but, um, but you know, so with it, you know,
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: kind of being done, um, I feel really proud of
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: like where we got to with that last scene, last
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: season specifically, because I, I look at my performance in the,
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: in the return, the first season we did season 11,
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: And I like, like I said, like I look scared.
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: Like it's like I see like this guy like that
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: just is like pretty scared. I remember like I was
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: like stress eating a ton. So it was like getting
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: kind of big at that time. Let out the jumpsuit. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: We only have a couple of these.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: Stop. The slimming yellow jumpsuit. Yeah, just the– and then
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: like looking at like the stuff I did. in the
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: second season where i was like i was like oh
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: it's like all of us were a lot more comfortable
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: we all of us settled in a lot more um
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: you know everything happened so fast on the first one which.
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: I think you need like again look at the the
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: original run of it like those early shows are clunky
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: as hell yeah yeah yeah so like you see them
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: when they get to the season four and five and
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: they really kind of found.
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: Their stride yeah exactly.
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: So it's yes they all kind of need.
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: That yeah but i was you know i was i
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: was really like it's like i knew there was going
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: to be a lot of hate coming my way because
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: i'm a part of the you know the community that
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: is if it wasn't me.
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: I would have hated the guy what have i been doing.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: This whole time it's like also it's like uh like
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: my favorite thing is when people go like how did
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: you how did you joel find you or pick you
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: for this thing i was like uh i'm not sure
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: if it was just a fate or i don't know
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: Three seasons of a Comedy Central show. It's just like–
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: That's what.
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: I always say. It's like, yeah, it is a lot
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: of luck, but it only works, the luck part of it,
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: when you've been working at it and you have something
- 1:01:41Speaker 5: to back it up so that when you get that
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: chance because of luck, you're just like, oh, hey, look,
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: I got these chops that I've been working on for years.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: Yeah that's why it you know it pays off when
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: you get that break of like hey I do actually
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: want to try to do another.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: Season yeah yeah I would love to just like you
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: know really really like nail another one and we'll see
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: but I really like that I really am really proud
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: of the gauntlet I like I think the I like
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: a lot of jokes that I was able to sneak
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: in there like I snuck in a Suspiria reference you
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: know like there's like a I have a Suspiria reference
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: and a and a Freddie reference like back to back
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: like a Matthew Barney joke we have in there like
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: it's like I got like, um, you know, in like
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: Atlantic Rim, I have a smash mouth, like somebody, like,
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: it's like, it's like, there was a ton of stuff
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: that like, I was really proud of getting in there.
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: And then also the becoming better friends or just, you know,
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: become better friends with like Hampton and Baron, who I
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: was already friends with for a long time, but like
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: having this thing now that we did.
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: Again, you're, you're the team. Yeah, exactly. It's all come together.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: Getting to meet Rebecca Hansen, who played Cynthia was really great. Um,
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: And then really just, like, it's, like, a really cool
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: thing about it, too, is the friendship. Because I knew
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: Felicia casually, you know, but, like, I, like, you know,
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: now consider her, like, a really close friend. And it's, like,
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: that's the kind of stuff that I, when I look
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: back on these things... And, like, and then work with Joel,
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: of course. All that stuff, you know.
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: But, like, it's, like, I just think about the friendships
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: and the relationships because those will always last longer than
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: the actual thing.
- 1:03:14Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: And that's always kind of the case.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: Like, that's what you take with you when you're done.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: Like, everybody else can watch the show, but you've got
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: a whole separate little, like, plane of existence.
- 1:03:23Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. And so, you know, like, yeah, Felicia and
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: I just, like, it's, like, I just, I'm really, I'm, like.
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: The more I get to know her, the more I'm
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: blown away by her resolve and her talents. We just
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: did a project together, something that will come out next year.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: I was just like, oh, I get it now. I
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: was just like, oh, she's like the nerdy girl thing.
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: And I thought she was amazing in Mr. Science Theater.
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: But she always like created everything.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: She went from having like bit parts here and there
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: and then went, well, screw this. I just want to
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: do my own thing. So that's what I always thought
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: was amazing. And now there's a guild outfit.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: Her guild outfit is in the Smithsonian.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: Yeah. It's like the thing that she made that like
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: she built from nothing and like the fans found it.
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: Which again is like you never know if it's going to.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: And she didn't.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: But with her, yeah.
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. And then the, and then the league ripped
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: it off for the first season. So, yeah. Um, it,
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: it was, you know, with Joel, you know, we met
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: when he was on the, I guess on the Nerdist podcast.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: And then we ran into each other a couple more
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: times that week and he was in town.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: At like different, like one was like a Wayne White, uh,
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: like a screening of like his movie Beauty is Embarrassing
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: that Joel like did moderate. And I was like, oh shit, Joel's,
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: I'm like, I was like, hey, he's like, oh, hey man.
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: You know, like, uh, He's like, you like Wayne White?
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, I think it's incredible. And then, like,
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: the next day, I just happened to swing by, you know, Harmontown,
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: Harmontown taping, because I was, like, doing a set, something
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: on the outside of town. I was like, I'll just
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: swing by and see who's up, who's hanging out. And
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: he was like, hey, are you following me, man?
- 1:04:57Speaker 7: So, again, it is.
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: Luck kind of completely coming into play.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and I just, I think.
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: But then all the rest of it kicks in.
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: And he was just, oh, you know these guys, too? And, like,
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: I think it just, those three times, it was like, knock, knock, knock, like. Um,
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: I stuck in his head and then we just like
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: started becoming friends. Like, you know, like he was, he
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: was like, Hey, he had to present something, some award, uh,
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: at some thing in LA. So he's like, Hey, I'm
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: going to come out a day early. Would you want
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: to like get together and help me write jokes for
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: the presentation? And I was like, I was like, sure. Yeah,
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: I know. I was like, of course.
- 1:05:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: And I, yeah, I was on a bus with that
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: dude now for like, you know, like last two years
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: or a ton of the time. And, uh, you know, uh,
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: that's insane to me. And then, and then it's just also,
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: I did, I wasn't sure. I thought I kind of,
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: and I, I say this with, you know, like a
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: lot of humility. I really thought that like, I was like, wow,
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: I'm going to be the lead on a Netflix show.
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: This is it.
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: Yeah. Here's the thing.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: I mean, you never know. And you know, like it
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: all kind of becomes the, as you said, the journey's
- 1:06:03Speaker 5: not over.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. But I really thought, cause like, I remember
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: when my, My agents and managers, I was like, I
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: really like to do more stuff. And they're like, well,
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: you got to just self-generate stuff. And I was like, okay.
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: And then I sold– we did three seasons of Meltdown
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: with Jonah Kumail and Comedy Central. I did two seasons
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: of Hidden America, which was like a dream come true
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: to do that show too. And then like two seasons
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: of Mystery Science Theater 3000. And then I did that
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: tour and I got back. I was like, huh? Did
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: the thing you asked about. I made six seasons.
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: Look at all these things I've made.
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: Yeah. And then they were like, so what are you
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: going to do now? I'm like, damn it.
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: You were supposed to be working on that part.
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: Exactly. And then like the real like reality knock was
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: like– and then like two weeks later my dad died suddenly.
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: And it was just like– I was like.
- 1:06:50Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: And then so I really feel like I'm just now
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: coming out of the muck.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: Like this year was like the year after, you know,
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: just– drinking, processing, and living in this new portion of
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: my life. And then this year was not a lot
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: of work, but I did a ton of stuff. I
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: put out that Weird Al covers thing. I directed a
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: bunch of music videos for bands I like. And none
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: of it was bringing in money, but all of it
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: was very kind of getting back down to.
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: It's what you needed.
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. Getting back down to the work. Did you see... Oh,
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: where'd you go, Bernadette? The last Linklater movie?
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: No, actually, I saw the trailer and it looks really good.
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: You know, it's okay. It's a little choppy for Linklater.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: It almost felt like, it felt like later day Cameron Crowe.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: Almost, with its kind of storytelling. And it's also set
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: in Seattle, which is also kind of a Cameron Crowe thing.
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: But the performances are great and there's a lot of
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: great moments in it. But it's like, you know, she
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: plays this character that's really manic and she's an architect
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: and she hasn't like made anything in a really long time.
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: And she's, so she's focusing too much on all this
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: shit that doesn't matter and being irritated by stuff. And
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: it's a, it really becomes about this journey of like
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: her trying to find the thing. Like, and then she like,
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: you know, she was so afraid of doing it again
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: that she does it. And then she's like, and then
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: everything turns around. Cause it's like, you know, I think
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: there's a scene in where Lawrence Fishburne saying like, he's like,
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: You're an artist. You're a creative type. If you don't
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: let that out, it destroys you.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: It's like my friend, I remember we were talking once
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: and he's like, why don't– because he was kind of
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: bumming out. He's like just left another coffee shop job,
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: his 70th one. He's like, why did you do stuff,
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: this stuff? We were both into the same things. Why
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: did you do it and I didn't? I was like–
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: because I really honestly felt like if I didn't, I
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: would die. And so– And I.
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: Think that's the difference of the people that make it
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: and get to do things and the people that don't
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: and just go get another dumb job. I think it's
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: the dividing line.
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's like any– and if it makes you
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: famous or you can make a living off of it.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: that's great but like it's like it's like there's a
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: ton of stuff i do that doesn't make me any
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: money oh yeah and it doesn't further anything you know
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: it's just i do it because i i have to
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: because it's fun.
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: Yeah and it's again it's getting you through what you
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: need to do yeah artistically as well as personal.
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: Yeah yeah and so like you know now i'm like
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: I decided like, kind of like last, just like, just,
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: you know, earlier this month, a couple months ago, I
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: was like, you know what? I've always wanted to do
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. It seems crazy.
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: It seems like a bad idea. It seems like a
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: terrible idea.
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: For people who don't know, it's like, it's this gigantic
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: arts and comedy festival in Edinburgh, which is, you know, like,
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: In Scotland. And it's, you do a show a night
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: for 30 days straight.
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: Once you're there, you're there.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: You're there.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: You're immersed in it.
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: And you do the same show every night. And it
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: just seems insane. And there's, it's not available on any
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: official sites, but on YouTube you can still find it,
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: which is the one where Hannibal, Hannibal Buress goes. And
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: it's just like, you kind of see him, like, it's like,
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: Like a week and a half in, he's like, oh, man.
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: How did I get myself in here?
- 1:10:10Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: But it seems like– so now, like, because I have
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: this goal in mind and, like, I'm just– so I'm
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: able to kind of, you know, just go– like, now
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: I can start going and running these shows. Instead of
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: just being like, oh, I'm just kind of doing comedy,
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: maybe to make a couple bucks or, like, and now
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: I'm just like, oh, I want to put together a show.
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: I want to put together a set, like a solid set.
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: And then also, like, the stuff you saw last night,
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: that was, like, Like I'm trying to talk about me
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: more as opposed to like jokes that will get me
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: a late night set. And so it's like I'm– and
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: then that's like me navigating talking about my family and
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: my upbringing and stuff like that. And that's nothing new comedically.
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: But for me, it is. And so it's like I'm
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: starting to do a thing where I approach like I
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: think of a challenge. And then that's nothing. I've usually
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: been real reluctant to any kind of effort.
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: There's always been an element of that to what, what
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: I've seen of your standup. I think there is at
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: least a very genuine version of you in the middle
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: of that. Even if you're working in jokes that you
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: feel like are just jokes, I feel like there is
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: still like a version of you that's kind of coming
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: through with it.
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: So now you're just.
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: Putting it in the front of the, you're just shoving
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: it out front.
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Well, it's like, I mean, I even like, like,
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: it's like, cause I, like I did some of the
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: like jokey jokes, like, and like, it's just like, They're
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: just jokes. But I love them so much. So I
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: feel like I was just like, well, I'm not going
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: to flesh out the Parkinson's joke. You don't really need to.
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: The only reason it works is because it lands the
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: way it does.
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. It's so dumb. Because it's kind of a
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: pun joke. Just to let the listeners know, the joke
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: is I was driving down the street and I saw
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: a mechanic shop called Sons and Park. And I was like,
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: that's where you usually put the family name first. Then
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: I realized I was going to want to take their
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: car to a place called Parkinson's. They got a shaky
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: business model. Sometimes I'll tell you, I go, it's okay
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: for me to make fun of Parkinson's. It's because I
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: don't know anyone with it.
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: So it's fine.
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: Yeah, so it doesn't bum me out. I'm sure one
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: day I will, and then I'll feel bad.
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: Well, and then you got the new aspect that I,
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: at least in recent times, has been added on because
- 1:12:25Speaker 5: last night you also watched a movie. So like, yeah,
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: that's like a whole new avenue now that like, even
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: if which, again, everybody from the old show ended up
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: doing the same thing, like still kind of finding a
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: new way to do that.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: And.
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: It is, like, such its own form of entertainment now. Like,
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: there are so many people. It is.
- 1:12:41Speaker 11: It's riffing.
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: Master Pancake out in Austin. You've got Down in Front
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: in Chicago. There's a ton of great movie riffing people
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: out there.
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: And a ton of great movies.
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: Yeah, and Doug Benson. Oh, yeah, last night with, well,
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: we won't say the name. We won't.
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: We're in it.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: It was very special, let me just tell you.
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's real, real bad. And, yeah, that's really exciting
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: to get to do because now I've got that name
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: brand recognition with MST.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: Uh, and it just like, you know, I, I don't
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: feel the pressure to, and also I got the songs now.
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: So it's like, it's like, if I don't, if I'm
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: not feeling like all standup, I got, I can like
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: go on. All right, let's riff on a movie now.
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: And that's like, it's like, or you know what? I'm
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: good with the jokes. Let's, uh, I'm going to sing
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: a couple of like weird out covers, you know, I
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: have these things I can do now. And I, I
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: like to kind of put on a show. I liked,
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: it's like, and that's why I liked having a big
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: howl and a possum just cause it's like, It's just
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: this weird– it's like a weird variety show. Like, you know,
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: that's like– I like to present stuff like that. That's
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: what we tried to do with Meltdown.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: It was like there was standards, but there was also
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: other stuff going on, you know?
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: It gives it a very different feel. Yeah, but again,
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: the geek that I am, I like when it starts
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: crossing over. I like– taking movies and then forcing them
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: into places that they didn't used to be or they
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: didn't they so because i feel like the references are
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: always there because for so many people like even just
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: last night i'm like everybody up there is just like
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: movie references yeah and i'm like it's kind of what
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: we all do it's just like some people a little
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: more than others.
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: Yeah and it's a you know it's it's a kind
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: of a way to just it's like remixes it's uh
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: it's a collage it's a pastiche of like um all
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: this pop culture shit in our heads and just pouring
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: it on top of other pop culture.
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: That's every episode of the show.
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. It's just cutting up magazines and putting them
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: on a poster board. Um, and so, and that's what
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: I like. It's like with these, with these, when, with
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: these shows where I riff on the movie with people,
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: like I like doing it with like, like local comics
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: cause they'll bring some aspect to it that I won't
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: ever think of. And it's, and it's all freestyle. It's a,
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: so it's like seeing, it's like going to an improv
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: show where even if the jokes aren't good, you're like, well,
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: they just thought of it.
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: I mean, is it, I would think it has to
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: be at least more fun for you because how much
- 1:14:54Speaker 5: you have to like hammer away at those ones for,
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: for mystery science theater. They're like, everything has to be
- 1:14:59Speaker 5: timed perfectly. Everything has to be balanced with the other
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: jokes you're telling. Whereas now you're just.
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. So it's like, and that's the thing when
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: we're writing an actual episode. So, you know, there's like,
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: it's like, oh, it's like, that's a good joke for
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: that moment.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: You know what?
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: We've done three talking as that characters in a row.
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: And we call them talking as ifs. We did just
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: a few talking as ifs. Like, okay, yeah. So we
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: should do a comment. Like a comment joke. And so
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: you have these different types of things.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: It's like.
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: So should we comment? And then it becomes math, essentially.
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: Yeah, they always had that. It's like you'd have references
- 1:15:35Speaker 5: to other movies. You'd have just them doing a funny voice,
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: just pointing at something on the screen and making fun
- 1:15:40Speaker 5: of it. So yeah, they always kind of had that.
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: So eventually it would have to be like, okay, there's
- 1:15:44Speaker 5: only so many things we can do. how do we
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: balance them out? How do we hammer them all in here?
- 1:15:49Speaker 8: And yeah.
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: What was funny was seeing like with the news shows,
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: like people going like, it's like, they're making a lot
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: of references to stuff like now. And like, I was like,
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: I was like, I was like, they always did. You're just,
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: you weren't old enough to get them.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:15:59Speaker 5: They all went over your head.
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: Cause there are still ones that I'm like, that's like
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: a regional reference. I don't even know what you're going for.
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: We would do that sometimes. If there was like, if
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: there was like a reference, it's like, if we were
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: going to say like, it's like, Oh, traffic's backed up
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: on the, we would, I would always pick something in the, uh,
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: in the, in the twin cities area. Um, And then
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: there was like one at the end where it's like
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: Elliot Kalin, who's the head writer, like it's at the
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: end of Time Travelers where they're like off in this
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: like green pasture. He's like, oh, I'm going to have
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: everyone sing this song from a regional like camp in
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: Jersey that he went to as a kid. And it
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: was like from an early– it's like I can't remember
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: the song now, but it's like he had to pull
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: it up on YouTube. We're like, why are we doing this?
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: He's like, because it will make me and my sister
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: laugh so hard.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: It is.
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: It's always like such weird. Again, like the Packers win.
- 1:16:43Speaker 5: It's a random reference that most of the other country
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: doesn't care what the Packers are doing that week.
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: I was really glad. I think it's in the first
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: season where I throw in a Garth Merengue. It's like,
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: I'm Garth Merengue. This is my dark place.
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: Oh, so I guess now we've decided you're not done.
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: You're on the path. You're kind of at a new
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: crossroads now. So do you know, or again, mostly just
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: so people can find where you're going and follow you
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: on the rest of this journey. What's the best way
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: for people to keep up with you? And then do
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: you have specific stuff that you want to send them towards?
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: Well, I mean, you know, I'm on Instagram. So that's
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: what I like to post on because I like taking
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: pictures and making videos and stuff like that.
- 1:17:27Speaker 5: I want to put a lot of words in it.
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: It won't let me.
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: It's all pictures. Not me, man.
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: Now I just have to take weird– well, again, I
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: take tons of weird pictures, but it's only like up
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: two or three things. It's just weird and animate objects.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I like that.
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: On Halloween, I go and take weird pictures of stuff
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: in people's yards.
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: Oh, nice.
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the only thing on our Movie Meltdown feed.
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: That's great. You should maybe have it do something with
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: the show. No, no, no.
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: Horror.
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: Skeletons and horror.
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: Skeletons and horror.
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: Ghosts and goblins it really is like it's that or
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: like the they do vinyl model kits at wonderfest every
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: year and it's like 20 pictures of like close-ups of
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: giant busts of a monster from 35 years ago that
- 1:18:05Speaker 5: nobody else knows what it is yeah yeah i'm just
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: like this is awesome oh yeah that's my instagram yeah
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: what's yours yeah at jonah ray uh which is also
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: twitter and uh and stuff and uh um bands in
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: town is where you can find my live uh live
- 1:18:19Speaker 5: appearances and doing stuff in upstate new.
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: York and Not every show has movie riffing. Some of
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: them do. Some of them don't. It just depends on
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: the venue, really.
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: I would think that's an extra challenge.
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's just if they can do it.
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: Sometimes they're like, yeah, we can set it up. It'll
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: be like $ 2, 000. I was like, wait, that's how much
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: I'm supposed to be making. I hope.
- 1:18:42Speaker 5: That's kind of why I quit doing live events.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: Because I did do a movie showing one time, and
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: I had to rent the screen. I had to come
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: up with the projector. I went so far in the
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: hole on that. And I'm just like– Just start doing
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: them at Kaiju. If you guys want to do it, yeah. Well, see,
- 1:18:56Speaker 5: they weren't there at the time. But, yeah.
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: That was a great room.
- 1:18:58Speaker 5: Yeah, they're a good setup. They could get a little
- 1:19:01Speaker 5: bit of a better projector, but– It was there.
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: It was there. Yeah, yeah. But yeah, that's what I'm doing.
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: So I'm just going around, adding dates as I try
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: to work on this Edinburgh show, which is exciting to me.
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: And then, you know, doing just, yeah. Like right now,
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: I'm waiting to hear back. I'm supposed to, I did
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: a pilot script for BBC in England. And that's something
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: that I'm like really hoping to try and do. Because
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: I feel that's the, as far as like next project
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: of mine, it feels like the, in my head, you know,
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: it's like I did my standup show and then I
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: had my sketch show with, uh, you know, hidden America.
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: And then I, you know, and then I did mystery
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: science theater on like Netflix. And then I'm like, it's like, Oh,
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: and the next thing is like a narrative. I want
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: to do like a narrative comedy show, um, in England.
- 1:19:49Speaker 5: Uh, and it's all stages.
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: Yeah. It's like, I just, I hope, I hope it works.
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: It's like, they seem to be really stoked on it
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: and got to work on it with the guy from
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: the in-betweeners, uh, and.
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: And that has such crossover now that it didn't. Again,
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: it used to be it was on BBC and that
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: was it. And occasionally they'd pick up two or three
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: shows to show on PBS or something. But like now,
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: you can just watch BBC.
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: And it's like the idea of just pulling a Rob Delaney,
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: just getting to live in England for a little bit
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: would be nice. I think it's time they need another
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: tall American dude.
- 1:20:22Speaker 5: You're just going to confuse them.
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: They won't be able to tell us apart. All Americans
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: look the same. But, yeah, so that's just what I'm
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: up to now. All right. Yeah, and then we'll probably
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: have going to be that movie I shot. I think
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: that's coming out in April on Hulu.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: I can't say much more than that, but it was fun. And, yeah, yeah,
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: that's all I got. All right.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: That'll do.
- 1:20:48Speaker 5: So thank you for being on the show.
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: Thanks for having me.
- 1:20:51Speaker 5: Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next time.

- 1:21:13Speaker 11: to let that black box bite You better put all
- 1:21:16Speaker 11: your eggs in one basket You better cut your chickens
- 1:21:19Speaker 11: before they hatch You better sell some wine before it's
- 1:21:22Speaker 11: time You better find yourself a niche to.
- 1:21:24Speaker 10: Scratch You better squeeze all the Charmin you can But Mr.
- 1:21:29Speaker 10: Whipple's not around Stick your head in the microwave and
