- 0:10Speaker 1: Here he is Brandon. Oh, he's on his phone. Sorry,
- 0:12Speaker 1: he's you know what he's doing right now, Kratzy Brandon.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Hide screen ager.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Besides being a screenager, he's trying to figure out his
- 0:19Speaker 1: title because they had an argument in our pre production
- 0:21Speaker 1: show today.
- 0:22Speaker 3: What is your exact title with the Rays?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Your player personnel development, mental coach of Bunting?
- 0:30Speaker 3: What is your can you please?
- 0:35Speaker 4: Well? Yeah, I'm still trying to figure it out myself. No.
- 0:38Speaker 4: The bistal title is Senior Advisor Baseball Operations, which is
- 0:43Speaker 4: just a title. It's pretty much just being a resource
- 0:48Speaker 4: for the major league club and the minor league managers,
- 0:51Speaker 4: being around the big league club quite a bit, trying
- 0:53Speaker 4: to help out as much as I can with cash
- 0:55Speaker 4: in the front office there, and then just being a
- 0:58Speaker 4: resource for the minor league managers in the minor league staff.
- 1:01Speaker 4: So I really enjoyed doing a little bit of everything.
- 1:03Speaker 4: They've included me and everything, and I've enjoyed, really enjoyed
- 1:06Speaker 4: being this organization.
- 1:07Speaker 1: All right, Because I just want to know, have you
- 1:09Speaker 1: ever seen office? I think it's office space? What exactly
- 1:11Speaker 1: do you do around here?
- 1:13Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:13Speaker 4: Like? That's kind of one of my favorite movies.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Yeah, so what is what is it exactly you do
- 1:18Speaker 3: around here? Is that what they come in? Is that?
- 1:20Speaker 4: What? Uh? Yeah, No, you know, I'm at the club
- 1:31Speaker 4: quite a bit. And at the club that definitely when
- 1:33Speaker 4: they're home with the coaches in the coaches room, I
- 1:35Speaker 4: watched their game from from the suite with the with
- 1:38Speaker 4: the front office people or sometimes with with with our analysts,
- 1:42Speaker 4: which is a lot of fun. But then also when
- 1:45Speaker 4: they go on the road if I don't travel, I'm
- 1:47Speaker 4: I see affiliates and I'm kind of evaluate our organization,
- 1:51Speaker 4: coaches and players, the trade deadlines coming up hopefully you know,
- 1:54Speaker 4: would be involved in that a little bit. So they've
- 1:57Speaker 4: included me and everything. So I I don't have anything specific,
- 2:01Speaker 4: but I'm just really happy to be here being with
- 2:04Speaker 4: the Raised organization.
- 2:05Speaker 2: I know one thing that they do is they do
- 2:08Speaker 2: value input from everybody. You were across the dugout from
- 2:11Speaker 2: the Rays for a long time. Do you feel like
- 2:14Speaker 2: their ability to value input would have been something that
- 2:18Speaker 2: you could have used when you were the manager of
- 2:21Speaker 2: the Orioles or in any other organization that you were in.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean every organization is different. I mean Eric
- 2:27Speaker 4: and Anderson just an incredible person. He is surrounded by
- 2:32Speaker 4: unbelievable people also, So that's the first thing you notice.
- 2:34Speaker 4: The first thing you notice here is the people that
- 2:36Speaker 4: they've brought in, the people in the organization, how they communicate,
- 2:41Speaker 4: how they go about making decisions. You know, Eric's so
- 2:45Speaker 4: transparent and he asked a ton of questions and everybody
- 2:48Speaker 4: else is very very curious on how we get better
- 2:50Speaker 4: and everybody gets along so well, that's the first thing
- 2:54Speaker 4: you notice is that everybody enjoys being working together and
- 2:59Speaker 4: is really with the people, and it starts with Eric
- 3:01Speaker 4: and that's that's a huge you know, that's a that's
- 3:03Speaker 4: a huge thing for me is uh is the culture
- 3:06Speaker 4: that they build and then cashed them with his with
- 3:09Speaker 4: his coaching staff. You know, it's guys that have been
- 3:12Speaker 4: together for a while, and it's guys that get along
- 3:14Speaker 4: really well. And uh, you know, it's a it's a
- 3:17Speaker 4: great blend between the major league coaching staff, the front
- 3:21Speaker 4: office and then the player development Staff's fantastic.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Brandon, do you have a company phone or do you
- 3:26Speaker 3: have a personal cell phone?
- 3:28Speaker 4: They use, Uh, it's a personal cell phone.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Because I didn't know maybe if the rays have ever
- 3:35Speaker 1: come to you and said you know you used to
- 3:36Speaker 1: work for the Orioles. Are you giving them information under
- 3:39Speaker 1: the table and they're paying you want to you know
- 3:40Speaker 1: what I'm saying, Like because you're kind of were in
- 3:42Speaker 1: the same division. He tried to beat them there for
- 3:44Speaker 1: a while, and now you're trying to learn from Everyone
- 3:46Speaker 1: wants to be like the race. So I didn't know
- 3:48Speaker 1: if if the Orioles maybe had sent you in as
- 3:50Speaker 1: a mole and then you're sending secret information back to.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Oh no, no, I'm I'm I'm pro raised right now.
- 3:55Speaker 3: You're doing it. You're doing it the rainway. Now.
- 3:58Speaker 4: I'm more light blue right now, you can meet I'm
- 4:00Speaker 4: not worn blacking home right now. I'm more light blue
- 4:03Speaker 4: ever since May eighteenth of last year, seventeenth, whatever day
- 4:05Speaker 4: that was. I'm I'm I'm pro ray right now.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Plus, here's the biggest thing that people don't know. You
- 4:11Speaker 1: live in the Saint Pete Clearwater area, so you're home, dude.
- 4:15Speaker 1: This is like, this is like you don't have to
- 4:18Speaker 1: go on the road. You can just go to the
- 4:19Speaker 1: home games. You can post up in the sweet life
- 4:22Speaker 1: like we showed.
- 4:23Speaker 3: And then you get to go home and watch your kids.
- 4:24Speaker 3: It's like the perfect thing.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I got to watch my kids play a little
- 4:28Speaker 4: bit this year. Like you said, I'm not that far
- 4:31Speaker 4: from the trop springing. The spring training site's just kind
- 4:33Speaker 4: of the other direction, not that far away. So it's
- 4:37Speaker 4: worked out great. Yeah, Cashi, you know, called me at
- 4:40Speaker 4: the end of the year last year and we talked
- 4:42Speaker 4: and some other people on their front office. John Daniels
- 4:45Speaker 4: is over here. He's an incredible, credible person and learning
- 4:48Speaker 4: a lot from him. So I'm just so happy to
- 4:51Speaker 4: be here. I think that I'm learning every single day.
- 4:55Speaker 4: I hope that I can contribute and you know, it's
- 4:58Speaker 4: been a really fun experience so far.
- 5:00Speaker 2: All Right, the field or the front office, you only
- 5:04Speaker 2: have you have less than a year under your belt here,
- 5:07Speaker 2: field or front office.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Well, I was a farm director one year, long time
- 5:16Speaker 4: ago for Theois Group in two thousand. That was a
- 5:20Speaker 4: rebuild too, two thousand and thirteen to over thirteen. So yeah,
- 5:26Speaker 4: I mean, the dugouts. It's hard to beat the adrenaline
- 5:29Speaker 4: and the dugout. And I've been fortunate to be you know,
- 5:33Speaker 4: I've managed for a while, I've been on major league
- 5:35Speaker 4: coaching staffs now for for quite a while. The adrenaline
- 5:39Speaker 4: of the big leagues, the adrenaline of trying to win
- 5:41Speaker 4: every single night, the chaos of it, that's hard to replicate.
- 5:45Speaker 4: So you know, I'm whatever the job is in front
- 5:49Speaker 4: of me, I'm gonna do the best I can. But
- 5:51Speaker 4: but ultimately I've always been on the field, guy hider.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Everyone Matina told us that the ninth inning is like
- 5:59Speaker 1: an addiction. So you've lived that life, You've you've lived
- 6:02Speaker 1: ups and downs of the night thing. That's kind of
- 6:03Speaker 1: what you're hitting at, right, the the addiction of man,
- 6:06Speaker 1: how am I going to figure out how to get
- 6:07Speaker 1: a pitching staff through when we're a guy or too short, right?
- 6:09Speaker 1: Or how am I going to get this guy through
- 6:11Speaker 1: five innings? So we save our bullpend for not today
- 6:13Speaker 1: but tomorrow. Right, So that that's kind of what the
- 6:16Speaker 1: what you're trying you're saying.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Yeah, just you know, you play in front of pack,
- 6:23Speaker 4: you know, packed houses with with a lot on the
- 6:26Speaker 4: line on a nightly basis. It's pretty addicting. And you
- 6:32Speaker 4: know there's uh, even when I was you know, most
- 6:35Speaker 4: of the Cubs as the first base coach and bench
- 6:36Speaker 4: coach there, you know, not a better place to beat
- 6:40Speaker 4: a lot of times than Wrigley Field on a Friday
- 6:41Speaker 4: afternoon against the Cardinals or whoever it is. And then
- 6:44Speaker 4: you get into the postseason and you're you can't even
- 6:47Speaker 4: feel your feet because it's just your You're nervous, and
- 6:49Speaker 4: you're anxious, and you're and you're excited. The same thing
- 6:53Speaker 4: as a managers, just with a lot less, a lot
- 6:55Speaker 4: more pressure, a lot more things going on around you.
- 6:59Speaker 4: To make decisions in real time, with decisions that matter.
- 7:03Speaker 4: That's you know, I really enjoyed that a lot. And
- 7:06Speaker 4: I enjoyed the collaboration part with the front office, with
- 7:09Speaker 4: the coaching staff on try on how we're gonna how
- 7:12Speaker 4: we're gonna beat the Yankees tonight with a seventy million
- 7:14Speaker 4: dollars payroll. That was that that drove me. And so
- 7:17Speaker 4: we did a pretty good job of that after the
- 7:19Speaker 4: first few years. But for a few years we did
- 7:20Speaker 4: a good job of that twenty two to twenty four.
- 7:22Speaker 4: But you know, those type of those type of moments
- 7:25Speaker 4: you've never forget. You You always remember the tough ones, honestly,
- 7:31Speaker 4: But yeah, that feeling is that feelings addictive.
- 7:36Speaker 2: When my puppy Bella has something wrong, I'm not going
- 7:39Speaker 2: to go around googling what to do.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Yeah, Kratz, let's have a better plan. Today's episode is

- 8:31Speaker 5: The ASPCA is not an insurance and is not engaged
- 8:34Speaker 5: in the business of insurance.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Yeah, by the way, we don't talk about the cubs
- 8:38Speaker 1: on this show. Okay, they're not even a team except
- 8:41Speaker 1: for when they're doing crappy, which you are now, so
- 8:43Speaker 1: we'll talk about the Cubs.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Here's my thing. You're a former manager. Now you're in
- 8:49Speaker 3: front off as you were a coach before.
- 8:52Speaker 1: If and when, which I think you should get another
- 8:54Speaker 1: big league manager's job. What have you learned in this
- 8:57Speaker 1: year off that you would take to your next job,
- 9:00Speaker 1: especially from the Rays, who everyone says has the best
- 9:03Speaker 1: organization in baseball.
- 9:06Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I've had a year to reflect on
- 9:10Speaker 4: kind of the six plus years of being in Baltimore
- 9:12Speaker 4: really special time in my life. Got to experience a
- 9:15Speaker 4: lot of things. And when you're when you're especially a
- 9:18Speaker 4: first year manager or first time manager, you're going to
- 9:21Speaker 4: go through experiences that that you nothing's preparing you for that.
- 9:24Speaker 4: I mean, I was the bench coach for four different managers,
- 9:27Speaker 4: but until you're in the seat, nothing is actually preparing
- 9:30Speaker 4: you for real time decisions, especially in the Al East,
- 9:34Speaker 4: or dealing with media or the front office communication. All
- 9:37Speaker 4: those type of things are things that you you're going
- 9:41Speaker 4: through for the first time. And so you know, for
- 9:44Speaker 4: those six plus years, I'm proud of, proud of what
- 9:46Speaker 4: we built there. I'm proud of how we handled everything.
- 9:50Speaker 4: You know, there was a lot of good times. There
- 9:52Speaker 4: was a few really really tough years. The last year
- 9:54Speaker 4: I was there was a really really tough year also,
- 9:56Speaker 4: so you're dealing with I was dealing with a rebuild too,
- 9:59Speaker 4: then kind of coming out of nowhere and exceeding expectations
- 10:03Speaker 4: for a few years to all of a sudden there
- 10:04Speaker 4: is expectations and how you handle that, all those types
- 10:08Speaker 4: of things you're going through for the first time, and
- 10:10Speaker 4: I want to believe that through the if there was
- 10:12Speaker 4: a second or third time, you know, I would have
- 10:15Speaker 4: I would be able to lean back on on the
- 10:17Speaker 4: experiences that I had. Being with this organization, I'm seeing
- 10:22Speaker 4: how they run things a little bit differently, being around
- 10:24Speaker 4: different people I've kind of thrown myself into. I watched
- 10:28Speaker 4: a lot of gigs, like I said, with with an
- 10:29Speaker 4: analyst and to kind of get his his thoughts on
- 10:32Speaker 4: on on the decision making. I talked to Cashi quite
- 10:36Speaker 4: a bit. I talked to I'm in the coach's room
- 10:38Speaker 4: every single day and get you know, just discussing discussing
- 10:42Speaker 4: game game situations, how to deal with players, how to
- 10:44Speaker 4: how to make players better, and so I think that
- 10:49Speaker 4: all my experiences are gonna are gonna benefit me if
- 10:54Speaker 4: there is the next time around.
- 10:56Speaker 2: All Right, you said you've you said it twice now
- 10:58Speaker 2: that you watch the games with the analysts and you
- 11:00Speaker 2: kind of smile both times. How many times have you disagreed?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Because I say that because I know the Rays want
- 11:08Speaker 2: disagreements because they feel like I forget exactly what Neander
- 11:12Speaker 2: told me, like out of disagreements comes the right answer,
- 11:15Speaker 2: because there's two sides to the disagreement. When you watch
- 11:18Speaker 2: these games, how often do you disagree?
- 11:24Speaker 4: So I'm gonna give Hi a shout out. His name
- 11:25Speaker 4: is Kyle Young, and he's uh so it's not money,
- 11:30Speaker 4: it's not money. He's not with his room together at times,
- 11:33Speaker 4: so I watch. I'll watch with the suite with Eric
- 11:35Speaker 4: and Kevin ibaking those guys up there. But but sometimes
- 11:39Speaker 4: I'll watch from from the coach's room with Kyle, and
- 11:44Speaker 4: it's just interesting to get his perspective on real time
- 11:47Speaker 4: decisions and if there's a decision to be made, Like
- 11:52Speaker 4: he'll ask me a lot of times about bullpen usage,
- 11:57Speaker 4: pinch hitting for a guy in the sixth having to
- 11:59Speaker 4: come back back around all those type of things, uh,
- 12:02Speaker 4: and filled in and fill back, attentional walk, all the
- 12:05Speaker 4: you know, math decisions at times that you make and
- 12:10Speaker 4: to get his his perspective from the computer. But also
- 12:15Speaker 4: I'll tell him a lot of times I'll ask him
- 12:16Speaker 4: questions and I'll say, hey, you're too late. You have
- 12:18Speaker 4: five seconds you had you had three seconds to figure
- 12:20Speaker 4: that out, and you didn't touch it in fast enough.
- 12:23Speaker 4: So the speed of the game is obviously different. But yeah,
- 12:27Speaker 4: just getting different perspectives I think is really really important
- 12:32Speaker 4: and understand and for me looking at the game from
- 12:35Speaker 4: a little different lens. Uh, it's going to be helpful.
- 12:40Speaker 3: All right.
- 12:40Speaker 1: So I got to ask, then, do you get to
- 12:42Speaker 1: ask the pictures? Are you okay today? Are you good today?
- 12:45Speaker 1: Because then when you're sitting in that room with what
- 12:47Speaker 1: is Kyle? You said his name was Kyle, Kyle. When
- 12:50Speaker 1: you're sitting there with Kyle, does Kyle know that so
- 12:52Speaker 1: and so had a stomach bug, or so and so
- 12:55Speaker 1: or so and so's wife is mad at him, or
- 12:57Speaker 1: so and so's child was sick and they were up
- 12:58Speaker 1: all that, right, So does Kyle have that information?
- 13:01Speaker 3: So when he says, hey, you should have brought in X,
- 13:04Speaker 3: Y or Z.
- 13:05Speaker 1: You're like, man, you don't know that he threw up
- 13:06Speaker 1: all night because his kid was sick with him last night, Right?
- 13:10Speaker 3: Those things are those things discussed?
- 13:14Speaker 4: Oh yeah, well we just we play around during the
- 13:18Speaker 4: game with those type of things. But absolutely yeah. I
- 13:21Speaker 4: mean when I was managing, we would have a meeting
- 13:24Speaker 4: every single day, me and are my pitching coach and
- 13:27Speaker 4: bench coach and pitching about not just about if the
- 13:31Speaker 4: guy's available, that maybe somebody's got something different going on
- 13:35Speaker 4: that he is unavailable, or maybe the guy threw thirty
- 13:39Speaker 4: four pitches last night, but somehow he feels great today.
- 13:42Speaker 4: All those type of things are with the medical staff,
- 13:45Speaker 4: et cetera. Are discussed on a daily basis, and the
- 13:47Speaker 4: same thing in Tampa.
- 13:50Speaker 2: All right, so let's talk about this team. Is this
- 13:53Speaker 2: team the way that they're scoring the Rays team are
- 13:57Speaker 2: the way that they're able to win ball game? Is
- 14:00Speaker 2: it sustainable? When when Chandler Simpson was hitting four hundred,
- 14:03Speaker 2: people thought he was going to win a batting title.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Now I think he's hit two sixty with no pop
- 14:08Speaker 2: for the last month. Like, is there is this sustainable?
- 14:12Speaker 2: Or because the game's played in a different way, like
- 14:15Speaker 2: not home runs and strikeouts, Like we're gonna see different
- 14:19Speaker 2: types of ups and downs of a season.
- 14:22Speaker 4: Well, I love you know, when they were playing well early,
- 14:25Speaker 4: I mean the style of play was so fun to watch.
- 14:29Speaker 4: You know, you got three guys in the middle of
- 14:30Speaker 4: the order that are all stars and Chandler. I know
- 14:33Speaker 4: he stre Chandler's been struggling lady lately, but he's gonna
- 14:36Speaker 4: come around and he's a game changer because it's because
- 14:38Speaker 4: of the speed and the on base ability and the
- 14:42Speaker 4: way that they can move the baseball, the way that
- 14:44Speaker 4: they can run the bases. Obviously the safety and the
- 14:47Speaker 4: bunt game is a big part of their game because
- 14:50Speaker 4: they are they do manufacture, so it's fun to watch.
- 14:54Speaker 4: It's like eighty when I called it like a month ago.
- 14:56Speaker 4: It's like eighties National League Baseball, where they're not just
- 15:00Speaker 4: for the three run homer, but they aren't having to
- 15:01Speaker 4: generate some offense and trying to pass the baton and
- 15:04Speaker 4: trying to get into the big boys in the middle.
- 15:06Speaker 4: So that was that was fun. I think it. I
- 15:08Speaker 4: think they're your whether you're a home run hitting team
- 15:12Speaker 4: or a team that needs to manufacture, as you guys know,
- 15:14Speaker 4: for a six month season, you're going to go through
- 15:16Speaker 4: peaks and valleys. You're going to go through times where
- 15:19Speaker 4: you might have a tough couple of weeks, and that's
- 15:21Speaker 4: just that's just part of that's just part of Major
- 15:23Speaker 4: League Baseball, right, you know, right now they're they're they're
- 15:27Speaker 4: not at their best, but I think that they're gonna
- 15:29Speaker 4: They're gonna come out of it. It's still a really
- 15:31Speaker 4: good club. They can really pitch. They have really good
- 15:34Speaker 4: starting pitching, and that's going to keep you in games.
- 15:36Speaker 4: And when you have when you have all star type
- 15:38Speaker 4: players in the middle, and you have guys that can
- 15:40Speaker 4: generate some offense around you, and they play really good
- 15:42Speaker 4: defense on most nights. Defense is important and be able
- 15:46Speaker 4: to catch the ball. Uh. I think that I think
- 15:48Speaker 4: that they can get back to what they were doing
- 15:50Speaker 4: the first couple of months.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Is this is this sustainable hyder though, because fifty eight
- 15:55Speaker 1: homers isn't a lot, right and and I get that
- 15:58Speaker 1: you know National League style well, but so many teams
- 16:02Speaker 1: low average high homers homers play in the postseason. As
- 16:05Speaker 1: we know, the Brewers have kind of done this style
- 16:08Speaker 1: for the last couple of years.
- 16:09Speaker 3: They get to the postseason. They can't really make get
- 16:11Speaker 3: it to the finish line?
- 16:13Speaker 5: Is this style?
- 16:14Speaker 3: Does this style work? And can you win a World
- 16:16Speaker 3: Series with it?
- 16:19Speaker 4: Well, I think they're always gonna be looking to add right,
- 16:21Speaker 4: So there's gonna be you know, I think with the
- 16:24Speaker 4: deadline coming up, you know, it's gonna be interesting to
- 16:27Speaker 4: see you know what Eric and the group do and
- 16:30Speaker 4: what and what we do about it. You know, you're
- 16:32Speaker 4: always they put themselves in position two to make a
- 16:36Speaker 4: run and then to add up the deadline. So that's
- 16:39Speaker 4: gonna that's gonna be exciting. They have, you know, it's
- 16:41Speaker 4: a good farm system, there's good players, So we'll see
- 16:44Speaker 4: what happens. I can't tell you for sure if it's
- 16:46Speaker 4: gonna be this is gonna be the lineup that's gonna
- 16:49Speaker 4: be in September and and and end of the postseason.
- 16:52Speaker 4: I do know that they catch the ball, and I
- 16:55Speaker 4: do know that they have really good starting pitching. And
- 16:59Speaker 4: the three guys in the middle of the order are
- 17:01Speaker 4: super underrated. For me, Cammy Aronda and Yonni Diez are
- 17:05Speaker 4: three of the most underrated players in the game. They
- 17:08Speaker 4: are all star type hitters. So if you can surround
- 17:11Speaker 4: those guys with maybe a little bit more punch. I
- 17:12Speaker 4: think that it's a pretty pretty scary offense.
- 17:15Speaker 5: You know why you are enjoying this minute because we're happy, Krats.
- 17:18Speaker 5: We're happy because we're wearing mac Weldon.

- 18:14Speaker 5: code f ou l.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Hier.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Would you say that Brian Baker is their closer with
- 18:20Speaker 2: eighteen saves right now?
- 18:24Speaker 4: Big? Yeah? Yeah, I had him on. I had him
- 18:26Speaker 4: for three or four years in Baltimore.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Okay, so you saw him in Baltimore and you didn't
- 18:31Speaker 2: make him the closer, so you must have been a
- 18:33Speaker 2: terrible manager. But you also had the mountain you had Cano.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I want to know, does Kyle, your analytic friend, think
- 18:42Speaker 2: Brian Baker is the closer or he is just a
- 18:44Speaker 2: guy that gets three outs?
- 18:49Speaker 4: That's a good question. Stratsy uh. Cashi's used him in
- 18:54Speaker 4: the big part of the oder in the eighth also
- 18:56Speaker 4: quite a few times, so yes, if flat coming up
- 19:00Speaker 4: in the eighth and that's and that it's that pocket
- 19:03Speaker 4: I've seen cash you use use bacon and uh and
- 19:07Speaker 4: in that fashion also so probably the eighth inning, big spot,
- 19:13Speaker 4: ninth inning, that's that's how Bake's being used. Is that just.
- 19:19Speaker 3: But is that discussed before the game?
- 19:21Speaker 1: Is that discussed before the game or does that just
- 19:23Speaker 1: happen because you said you got three seconds right?
- 19:25Speaker 3: Five seconds?
- 19:26Speaker 4: Yeah? No, I think you're discussing it through. I think
- 19:28Speaker 4: you're discussing before the game end, during the game. So
- 19:31Speaker 4: you're seeing how the you're seeing how the game is
- 19:33Speaker 4: played out. You're seeing what the score. You're seeing how
- 19:36Speaker 4: you are, whether your starter went four, whether your started
- 19:39Speaker 4: went six and two thirds, you're seeing, you're seeing what
- 19:41Speaker 4: you have available. You're seeing now you're seeing kind of
- 19:44Speaker 4: how the game is being played the last for the
- 19:46Speaker 4: last nine outs of the game, and where am I
- 19:49Speaker 4: putting my best guy against the against the toughest part
- 19:52Speaker 4: of their order or the matchups that are that are
- 19:53Speaker 4: the best And right now, Bake has showed that he's
- 19:56Speaker 4: that he's gotten some really really big outs for this team,
- 19:59Speaker 4: not just in that night inning, but in the eighth
- 20:00Speaker 4: inning also, And there's a lot of trust. So those
- 20:03Speaker 4: kind of those kind of things were talked about all day.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Long, Brandon, when you when you were managing, and still
- 20:10Speaker 1: to this day, when you talk to Kevin Cash, do
- 20:11Speaker 1: you start at the ninth inning and work your way
- 20:13Speaker 1: back as far as how you're gonna build each game?
- 20:16Speaker 3: Right? Right?
- 20:16Speaker 1: Do you say, Okay, if everything goes perfect, we have
- 20:19Speaker 1: Bacon the ninth and then we have whoever in the
- 20:20Speaker 1: eighth and whoever in the seventh. Hopefully our starter gives
- 20:23Speaker 1: us six and then we can figure it out. Or
- 20:25Speaker 1: do you start at the starter and you look at
- 20:27Speaker 1: it and say, well, if everything goes wrong and you
- 20:29Speaker 1: need to have ABC ready, do.
- 20:31Speaker 3: You understand what I'm saying, Like, is the game built?
- 20:33Speaker 1: Because everything is I don't want to say scripted, because
- 20:36Speaker 1: it's not scripted, but it's discussed, right, It's it's planned
- 20:40Speaker 1: out for you try to cover everything that could happen.
- 20:43Speaker 1: So would you start the ninth inning and go back
- 20:45Speaker 1: or from the first thing and go forward.
- 20:49Speaker 4: I so I'm gonna talking about myself. The way I
- 20:51Speaker 4: did it in the way I did in Baltimore was
- 20:53Speaker 4: I had a meeting six o'clock UH with my game
- 20:58Speaker 4: plan guy, pitching coach, bench coach, and we did talk
- 21:03Speaker 4: about our bullpen availability that night, and we did bring
- 21:06Speaker 4: up different scenarios and I wanted to get opinions on
- 21:10Speaker 4: if I had two lefties in the pen, If I
- 21:11Speaker 4: have CNL Perez and Keegan Akan and the pen or
- 21:14Speaker 4: Danny Kulom who get both sides out? What pocket do
- 21:19Speaker 4: you do? We feel like if it's a diverse res ninder,
- 21:23Speaker 4: a gray U pocket, do we like kulom or Perez
- 21:26Speaker 4: in a big spot, et cetera. So I wanted those
- 21:28Speaker 4: type of opinions, so we did go over best case scenario.
- 21:32Speaker 4: We would go over worst case scenario. With Batista. I
- 21:35Speaker 4: had that kind of luxury where I just wanted to
- 21:41Speaker 4: get three outs, try to get it to him somehow.
- 21:44Speaker 4: And in those years of twenty three twenty four, I
- 21:46Speaker 4: had Canoe and Perez a lot of nights. With Canoe
- 21:50Speaker 4: is a heavy split, so I wanted him on a
- 21:53Speaker 4: right handed pocket. I wanted CNL on a left handed pocket.
- 21:56Speaker 4: I had Coulomb and Jacob Webb that were kind of
- 21:58Speaker 4: got both sides out, so we kind of would map
- 22:02Speaker 4: that out. Also, who's my long guy tonight? If things
- 22:06Speaker 4: do not go right and the starter goes three and
- 22:08Speaker 4: two thirds, who can I cover with some innings? All
- 22:10Speaker 4: those type of things are discussed for about fifteen minutes.
- 22:12Speaker 4: That's how I did it, at least about fifteen minutes
- 22:15Speaker 4: prior to the game.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Who are we missing with the race? Who are we
- 22:21Speaker 2: as non Rays fans just baseball fans needing to tune into?
- 22:25Speaker 2: Besides the power three that you said, in the middle of.
- 22:28Speaker 4: That order, there's some good baseball players. Taylor Walls might
- 22:35Speaker 4: be the best short stuff in the game defensively. To
- 22:39Speaker 4: watch him on a nightly basis, I did. I always
- 22:42Speaker 4: knew he was a good player from obviously managing against
- 22:44Speaker 4: these guys a lot I watched. I watched him make
- 22:47Speaker 4: plays against this But when you watch him play defensively,
- 22:50Speaker 4: it's a he plays at a different level and the
- 22:53Speaker 4: numbers back it up where he is just a game
- 22:56Speaker 4: changer defensively in the middle of the field, surrounded by
- 23:00Speaker 4: two really good players that are kind of coming into
- 23:02Speaker 4: their room. Ben Williamson's a really good baseball player. Johnny DeLuca,
- 23:05Speaker 4: who's coming back off injury here soon's a good baseball player.
- 23:08Speaker 4: It can really handle left handed pitching. Richie Pelosios has
- 23:11Speaker 4: done a nice job from the left side against against
- 23:13Speaker 4: right handed pitching. I think Cedric's gonna have a good
- 23:17Speaker 4: second half. So there's besides the three big boys in
- 23:20Speaker 4: the middle, there's some There's just some good baseball players
- 23:23Speaker 4: that play the game the right way. They play hard,
- 23:26Speaker 4: that can all do little things with small ball. So
- 23:30Speaker 4: I've just been impressed with how they go about how
- 23:32Speaker 4: they go about the game and how they play.
- 23:35Speaker 1: All right, well that's Brandon Hyde, Ray's senior advisor of
- 23:39Speaker 1: Baseball ops. Thank you for joining us Before I let
- 23:41Speaker 1: you go, though, I need to know this.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Tell Westy. People don't know.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Westy is the director of Team Traveler. Thanks for texting
- 23:47Speaker 1: me back three weeks later. I really appreciate all his
- 23:49Speaker 1: help on something, so thanks for getting right back to me.
- 23:52Speaker 3: It was amazing how quick his response was.
- 23:56Speaker 4: He's the best in the business. That's unbelievable.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I mean he you know, when he needs Florida Gator
- 24:03Speaker 1: tickets or he needs Florida Gator gear, you know what,
- 24:06Speaker 1: he calls me, I get right back.
- 24:07Speaker 3: I sent it to him. You know what. I asked him.
- 24:09Speaker 1: My son's college team's playing at Clearwater. They want to
- 24:11Speaker 1: come to VP. I texted him. The game's been played.
- 24:14Speaker 1: They've already written about it, you know, in the history books.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Three weeks later, Oh sorry, I just saw this.
- 24:19Speaker 3: So thank god Elvis got back to me. That's all
- 24:21Speaker 3: I can say. Thank god Elvis got back. He hooked
- 24:23Speaker 3: him up.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Elvis is a man too, exactly. I'll get on him
- 24:29Speaker 4: about getting a little bit more, you know, back to you.
- 24:32Speaker 4: In a quicker fashion.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, and tell him I'm not going to
- 24:34Speaker 1: give him a tip, and I'll get Toby Hall to
- 24:36Speaker 1: give him a tips.
- 24:38Speaker 4: You probably years ago.
- 24:40Speaker 3: That's what I never played. I never played for the Rays.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I took West he out and got him drunk more
- 24:45Speaker 3: times than he remembers.
- 24:46Speaker 4: So he should be one of my boulets.
