- 0:26Speaker 1: he told him he could be a certain NFL quarterback.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I'll talk to that QB. Charlie Jones joins me to
- 0:33Speaker 1: discuss his best training camp and while Charlie was terrific,
- 0:37Speaker 1: he doesn't quite make my list of the five training
- 0:40Speaker 1: camp standouts. You'll hear who did. The Bengals Booth Podcast

- 1:15Speaker 1: Lee Corso. The ninety year old former head coach, is
- 1:19Speaker 1: set to make his final appearance on ESPN's College Game
- 1:22Speaker 1: Day this Saturday, and while the show will surely still
- 1:25Speaker 1: be good, it will never quite be the same. For
- 1:29Speaker 1: nearly forty years, Corso has added good natured fun to
- 1:33Speaker 1: the show, from his signature not so fast, my friend,
- 1:37Speaker 1: before disagreeing with a colleague, to the four hundred and
- 1:40Speaker 1: thirty times he's ended the show by wearing a mascot's
- 1:44Speaker 1: headgear to signal his pick in the big game, Lee
- 1:48Speaker 1: Corso will go down as one of the most beloved
- 1:50Speaker 1: figures in the history of college football. Now let's get
- 1:54Speaker 1: to my first guest. Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith was
- 1:58Speaker 1: in town this week to record a one on one
- 2:00Speaker 1: interview with Joe Burrow for ESPN. They started against each
- 2:04Speaker 1: other in Smith's final season in Burrow's rookie year, but
- 2:09Speaker 1: that's only scratching the surface of the many things that
- 2:12Speaker 1: the two quarterbacks have in common. Alex, when your college
- 2:17Speaker 1: coach Urban Meyer was recruiting Joe Burrow to Ohio State,
- 2:21Speaker 1: he told him he could be the next Alex Smith.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Apparently there are some physical similarities and the mental makeup
- 2:28Speaker 1: was similar at that age. I know Joe told you
- 2:31Speaker 1: about that. What did you think.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah, listen, when Joe first told me that story, I'd laughed,
- 2:39Speaker 2: you know, flattered, you just, you know, obviously looking at
- 2:42Speaker 2: it at this point in Joe's career and the player
- 2:47Speaker 2: he is a person, he is pretty funny to think that, Yes, seventeen,
- 2:51Speaker 2: eighteen year old Joe was told that his ceiling was me.
- 2:56Speaker 2: You know, I'm not sure what to make of it.
- 2:59Speaker 2: You know, I do get a kick out of it,
- 3:01Speaker 2: you know, obviously, it's funny the world, the NFL, you know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: the football world and how small it can be at times,
- 3:06Speaker 2: and the links that we have, even Joe and I,
- 3:08Speaker 2: even though we're obviously uh you know, pretty big age gap,
- 3:13Speaker 2: but obviously played for the same college coach. And you know,
- 3:16Speaker 2: even even the the guy that recruited him to LSU
- 3:19Speaker 2: is the same guy that they recruited me to Utah
- 3:22Speaker 2: from a position standpoint, so a lot of similarities. But yeah,
- 3:26Speaker 2: it's Joe, Joe's ceilings. Obviously, I'm not sure we still
- 3:29Speaker 2: know what it is at this point, which is saying
- 3:32Speaker 2: a lot you know, to be heading into a six season,
- 3:34Speaker 2: I'm not. I don't think any of us can say
- 3:39Speaker 2: what he can't do at this point.
- 3:42Speaker 1: You came to town for one of these quarterback to
- 3:44Speaker 1: quarterback chats a few years ago, and from watching it,
- 3:47Speaker 1: it seemed like you two guys had great chemistry right
- 3:49Speaker 1: off the bat. Was it the Urban Meyer connection or
- 3:52Speaker 1: was that just being two members of the quarterback fraternity.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good question.
- 3:58Speaker 3: You know.
- 3:58Speaker 2: It's funny like for you know, I grew up in
- 3:59Speaker 2: San Diego, very different than than Ohio. But you know,
- 4:03Speaker 2: my dad same thing, coach coach football for a while.
- 4:06Speaker 2: By the time I got to high school, though he
- 4:08Speaker 2: had he had moved on and become a high school principal.
- 4:10Speaker 2: But I think that you know, the son of of
- 4:12Speaker 2: of coaches, you know, and then our journey. Maybe some
- 4:17Speaker 2: similarities there, but you know, it's funny there there are
- 4:22Speaker 2: there are differences as well, and and uh, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 2: obviously Joe's game, but but especially I think his confidence
- 4:29Speaker 2: is something that's so unique. It's hard in the NFL.
- 4:31Speaker 2: It's hard to be a number one pick and come
- 4:33Speaker 2: to a team and and and uh, you know, again,
- 4:36Speaker 2: I think from the outside perspective, people look at his
- 4:39Speaker 2: first five years in the NFL and listen, he's gone
- 4:40Speaker 2: to the Super Bowl, he's been Pro Bowls. He just
- 4:42Speaker 2: had one of the greatest NFL seasons of all time.
- 4:46Speaker 2: And it's easy to say that it looks easy, right,
- 4:48Speaker 2: and then he's been on this rocket ship. He also,
- 4:50Speaker 2: you know, realized like he's been the comeback Player of the
- 4:52Speaker 2: Year twice. This guy's gone through a lot of adversity,
- 4:55Speaker 2: a ton of injuries, and he has really changed the
- 4:58Speaker 2: narrative around this place. Right. The spotlight that is on
- 5:02Speaker 2: the Cincinnati Bengals as an organization has gotten brighter, and
- 5:05Speaker 2: it's because of Joe, right, Expectations have changed because of him.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And you know, man, it's it's it's it's so impressive, right,
- 5:15Speaker 2: and again, I think, to survive all that that adversity,
- 5:18Speaker 2: right to come out the other side and to where
- 5:20Speaker 2: he is and playing at the level he has he
- 5:23Speaker 2: is right now, is just it's really impressive. It's really unique. Honestly,
- 5:26Speaker 2: it takes it's not just that the it's not just
- 5:28Speaker 2: the player. It really takes a unique person to go
- 5:32Speaker 2: through all that and still have the resolve that he has.
- 5:35Speaker 1: We're visiting with Alex Smith. You were an NFL quarterback
- 5:38Speaker 1: for sixteen years, first pick in the draft, multi time
- 5:42Speaker 1: Pro bowler. You had a great career in your own right.
- 5:45Speaker 1: But are there any Joe Burrow traits that you wish
- 5:49Speaker 1: you could have stolen? Well?
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean that was the one I just
- 5:52Speaker 2: hit on there. Man, I listen, this is the NFL
- 5:54Speaker 2: can be a humbling, humbling place. Everybody's good, you know,
- 5:59Speaker 2: and again one of the great big prizes of being
- 6:01Speaker 2: a number one pay because you go to the worst
- 6:03Speaker 2: team in football, and man, it can steal your confidence, right,
- 6:10Speaker 2: you know. I think I had lost one game in
- 6:12Speaker 2: high school, in one game in college, in my entire life,
- 6:14Speaker 2: and then you go to the NFL, and those first
- 6:16Speaker 2: few seasons were hard for me, right. It was hard
- 6:18Speaker 2: to keep your confidences, hard to keep your kind of stinger,
- 6:21Speaker 2: so to speak. And to me, that's what I see
- 6:24Speaker 2: about Joe is one of his kind of superpowers. This
- 6:27Speaker 2: guy just, you know, unwavering belief in himself, which I
- 6:31Speaker 2: think you have to have I do. And I think
- 6:36Speaker 2: with that, the guys on this team, you can see
- 6:38Speaker 2: they looked at him and they believe in him. Right,
- 6:39Speaker 2: And I think that does a lot.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Also.
- 6:43Speaker 2: You know, it's funny. I can remember being a young
- 6:45Speaker 2: player in this league and you know, and again, you're
- 6:47Speaker 2: the quarterback and there's a leadership position that comes with
- 6:49Speaker 2: that and people looking to you when things aren't going well.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And man, I can remember doing and saying some dumb
- 6:55Speaker 2: stuff because I thought i'd needed to, you know, and
- 6:59Speaker 2: you learn, I learned the hard way. But I just
- 7:01Speaker 2: don't see that from him. I just again, like this
- 7:02Speaker 2: isn't he's not a raw rock guy when he doesn't
- 7:04Speaker 2: have to be. I just think, again, he has this
- 7:06Speaker 2: great resolve about him that I think rubs off on
- 7:10Speaker 2: his teammates. Right, And this team, this team has kind
- 7:12Speaker 2: of shown that every year they finish better than they start, right,
- 7:16Speaker 2: Like they just this team, you know, I think continues
- 7:18Speaker 2: to improve. It kind of comes from that kind of
- 7:21Speaker 2: focus and that kind of mindset and attitude. And obviously,
- 7:23Speaker 2: I know the last two seasons, you know, came up
- 7:27Speaker 2: a little short as far as making the playoffs. But
- 7:30Speaker 2: you know, I think this is a team I see,
- 7:32Speaker 2: I see it from the outside, and there's a sense
- 7:35Speaker 2: of urgency I think that this team has, and I
- 7:36Speaker 2: think it comes from Joe.
- 7:38Speaker 1: You had seven offensive coordinators in your first seven years
- 7:41Speaker 1: and multiple head coaches. Joe's had one head coach, He's
- 7:45Speaker 1: been the play caller, only two offensive coordinators. How do
- 7:48Speaker 1: you think the Bengals have assisted Joe in the first
- 7:52Speaker 1: six years of his NFL career?
- 7:53Speaker 2: Well, yeah, that stability is exactly it, right, I mean,
- 7:57Speaker 2: I think that's it's rare in the NFL. It just
- 7:59Speaker 2: doesn't happen. And uh, you know, I think it's a
- 8:03Speaker 2: recipe for success. I mean this is like again a
- 8:05Speaker 2: model of what it looks like right, how to how
- 8:08Speaker 2: to draft a guy, really develop them and turn turn
- 8:10Speaker 2: something around, change the culture. It takes time, and there's
- 8:14Speaker 2: a lot of the media is impatient. Owners are impatient, right,
- 8:17Speaker 2: we want to see we want to see it right now.
- 8:19Speaker 2: And again, I you know, listen, there to criticism everywhere,
- 8:24Speaker 2: especially in the media. There's enough to go around, but
- 8:26Speaker 2: I think sometimes we don't look at what these you know,
- 8:29Speaker 2: teams and franchises have done. Right, then that's certainly it here, right,
- 8:34Speaker 2: like that kind of stability what Zach Taylor's done to
- 8:37Speaker 2: settle things down here again, so the focuses on football
- 8:40Speaker 2: right to have the same system in place now for
- 8:42Speaker 2: six years for Joe, just to see the level that
- 8:45Speaker 2: he can go to, right, like real ownership for all
- 8:48Speaker 2: these guys. Again, it's rare, but it's what you want,
- 8:51Speaker 2: right And again I think it's going to show up.
- 8:53Speaker 1: We're visiting with Alex Smith. You famously came back from
- 8:57Speaker 1: one of the most gruesome leg injuries of all time. Ironically,
- 9:00Speaker 1: you were the starting quarterback for Washington when Joe Burrow
- 9:04Speaker 1: is a rookie tour his ACL, MCL and PCL. What
- 9:09Speaker 1: stands out to you about how he overcame that injury
- 9:12Speaker 1: and the other injuries that he's had in the first
- 9:14Speaker 1: five years of his NFL career.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I remember the day really well. You know,
- 9:19Speaker 2: it's my first home game coming off of obviously my
- 9:21Speaker 2: own leg injury and journey back, and you know, to
- 9:25Speaker 2: see Joe, who a guy I was such a big
- 9:27Speaker 2: fan of from Afar And again I have so much
- 9:32Speaker 2: empathy again for the number one pick thing, and you
- 9:34Speaker 2: know him starting right away and playing, he just showed
- 9:38Speaker 2: so much guts that rookie year and then obviously to
- 9:40Speaker 2: see it on the same field, you just feel for him.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:43Speaker 2: But again, I mean, to have that knee injury and
- 9:46Speaker 2: come right back and plead his team to the super Bowl,
- 9:48Speaker 2: and then you know, back to the AC Championship game,
- 9:51Speaker 2: and again, I think probably coming off his best season
- 9:54Speaker 2: as a professional, right off off of this risk injury,
- 9:57Speaker 2: which no one else has really seen, especially from a
- 10:00Speaker 2: uarterback standpoint. So I'm kind of scared to think what
- 10:03Speaker 2: he might do here off of a healthy offseason, a
- 10:05Speaker 2: normal training camp.
- 10:07Speaker 1: He claims that he never threw the ball the way
- 10:10Speaker 1: he wanted to last year, and as you said, he
- 10:12Speaker 1: had one of the great statistical seasons of all time.
- 10:14Speaker 1: When you hear him say that, do you go, come on.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that's crazy to think about. And you know, I
- 10:20Speaker 2: did hear him say that, and it makes sense though.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I mean, obviously the risk is pretty important in the
- 10:26Speaker 2: throwing motion, and I can imagine that, you know, I
- 10:29Speaker 2: know from my own injury, even when I came back
- 10:31Speaker 2: and played, ye, I mean a year later, I felt
- 10:34Speaker 2: even better. Right, a year later, I felt even I
- 10:36Speaker 2: feel better now than I did then, right, Like that
- 10:39Speaker 2: is the body things take time, especially from these traumatic injuries,
- 10:42Speaker 2: and so I'm not surprised to hear that, right I
- 10:45Speaker 2: think that. Yeah, he's only stronger, right that that thing's
- 10:49Speaker 2: going to continue to heal and get better. So it'll
- 10:52Speaker 2: be fun to watch. I can't wait.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Joe wanted to play in the preseason. The Bengals granted
- 10:57Speaker 1: that wish. Five series, four touchdowns and great staff. Was
- 11:01Speaker 1: it worth the risk? Do you think it was so
- 11:03Speaker 1: wise to give Joe that opportunity?
- 11:05Speaker 2: Well, sitting here now, yeah, with him healthy, yes, yeah,
- 11:08Speaker 2: let's be very clear. Yes, Now you know that's the
- 11:10Speaker 2: great concern. He's playing guys in the preseason and obviously
- 11:13Speaker 2: just risking the hits. I thought it was really smart. Listen,
- 11:16Speaker 2: I missed this whole seventeen game regular season, game three
- 11:19Speaker 2: three preseason game, and it does change the dynamic a
- 11:22Speaker 2: little bit, I think, on if you want to play them.
- 11:25Speaker 2: And it's funny that that, you know, the Bengals followed
- 11:29Speaker 2: kind of the similar program that the Chiefs did, right
- 11:31Speaker 2: and Patrick that the guys played in that first one
- 11:33Speaker 2: and then the third one and they get a little
- 11:35Speaker 2: two week break here before the opener. But I think
- 11:38Speaker 2: it was nice to get those guys out there, get
- 11:40Speaker 2: him with the ones, get some time again. They haven't
- 11:42Speaker 2: had that luxury in years. Past because of the injuries
- 11:44Speaker 2: in training camp and so to take advantage of it. No,
- 11:48Speaker 2: I know, no Bengals fans left seeing him get hit,
- 11:50Speaker 2: But again, as a quarterback, some you never get hit right,
- 11:53Speaker 2: and so sometimes it's nice to get that one kind
- 11:56Speaker 2: of you realize you're a football player still and you
- 11:59Speaker 2: still can handle it. So I would actually say, like obviously,
- 12:03Speaker 2: looking looking back on it, Uh, couldn't have gone any better. Uh,
- 12:08Speaker 2: if you're a Bengals fan or Zach Taylor as far
- 12:10Speaker 2: as getting your guys out there, getting them a little
- 12:12Speaker 2: little action, they had had a ton of success and
- 12:15Speaker 2: came out healthy.
- 12:16Speaker 1: A couple more questions for Alex Smith. Were you surprised
- 12:19Speaker 1: the Bengals were able to extend both Jamar Chase and
- 12:23Speaker 1: t Higgins? And what do you think of spending that
- 12:25Speaker 1: kind of money on a wide receiver position as a
- 12:28Speaker 1: team building strategy?
- 12:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's it's I don't think there's any
- 12:33Speaker 2: one right answer for this, right like that, there's a
- 12:35Speaker 2: finite amount of money to spend in the cap and
- 12:37Speaker 2: you got to you know, pick your spots, uh, to
- 12:40Speaker 2: to spend it. I certainly absolutely love continuing to build
- 12:45Speaker 2: around Joe, right like, I mean, he's the strength of
- 12:46Speaker 2: this team, and it is obviously so special and unique,
- 12:49Speaker 2: and so I think to utilize him and continue to
- 12:51Speaker 2: kind of weaponize him, so to speak, it only makes sense, right,
- 12:56Speaker 2: and I think you have to do that. But there's
- 12:58Speaker 2: a give and take to all that, right, Like you, Okay,
- 13:00Speaker 2: if you're spending there, you may not have as much
- 13:02Speaker 2: money to spend on the other side of the ball.
- 13:04Speaker 2: And certainly we see a lot of youth over there
- 13:07Speaker 2: and and draft picks that need to step up and play.
- 13:11Speaker 2: And so that's that's part of the deal. We've seen
- 13:13Speaker 2: it in Kansas City. You know, you look at Patrick's
- 13:15Speaker 2: you know, his career was very similar. Early ton of
- 13:18Speaker 2: ton of money spent on the offense side of the football, right,
- 13:20Speaker 2: a lot of firepower, and then he saw the last
- 13:22Speaker 2: couple of years that did kind of shift. They did
- 13:24Speaker 2: make the decision obviously Tyreek leaves, they be kind of
- 13:27Speaker 2: become more of a defensive team with a with a
- 13:29Speaker 2: quarterback on the other side to kind of, you know,
- 13:34Speaker 2: to complete it. So I don't think there is any
- 13:36Speaker 2: one way. I don't think it'll be this way forever,
- 13:39Speaker 2: you know, here for Joe. But but right now. This
- 13:41Speaker 2: is it and obviously two guys that he has great
- 13:43Speaker 2: rapport with. And I think when healthy, you just see
- 13:47Speaker 2: it like, I'm not sure how you stop. It can't
- 13:50Speaker 2: double everybody, you know. And again, Joe's as maybe the
- 13:53Speaker 2: best in the NFL when it comes from, you know,
- 13:57Speaker 2: running an offense and delivering the football on time, you know,
- 14:00Speaker 2: And so I think it'll it'll think it'll be again,
- 14:04Speaker 2: I think a lot of fireworks on offense.
- 14:06Speaker 4: You know.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Hopefully those guys stay healthy on the outside, because again
- 14:10Speaker 2: it's it's unique, they're very unique.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Final question, and I really appreciate your time. The Bengals
- 14:15Speaker 1: will be a Super Bowl contender in twenty twenty five
- 14:19Speaker 1: if what goes right.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think the easy thing obviously. The
- 14:24Speaker 2: point too is like if these this defense gels right,
- 14:27Speaker 2: it comes together and can play. I mean, I don't know,
- 14:29Speaker 2: it's just this defense doesn't need to be I mean,
- 14:32Speaker 2: it doesn't have to be the eighty five Bears, but
- 14:35Speaker 2: you know, they gotta they you gotta have some you know,
- 14:38Speaker 2: some toughness. It's a new system obviously with the new
- 14:40Speaker 2: coordinator come in and they gotta figure that's going to
- 14:42Speaker 2: take a little time. These young guys gotta got to
- 14:44Speaker 2: figure out pro football. But if they can find their way,
- 14:47Speaker 2: you know, kind of come the end of the season,
- 14:48Speaker 2: and if this team can can punch a ticket, right, like,
- 14:52Speaker 2: who's going to doubt them?
- 14:54Speaker 1: You know?
- 14:54Speaker 2: And I think the other thing that goes into all
- 14:57Speaker 2: of this though, is health, right, Like, it's just such
- 14:58Speaker 2: a wild card in the NFL. I mean, everybody's trying
- 15:01Speaker 2: to figure out how to stay healthy, but it's not
- 15:04Speaker 2: an exact science, and so that's part of it for
- 15:08Speaker 2: all these teams in their journeys, Like, again, can you
- 15:10Speaker 2: stay healthy along the way? And certainly those are the
- 15:15Speaker 2: teams that they have the depth I think come postseason
- 15:18Speaker 2: to make good runs.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Your first sit down with Joe Burrow is terrific. I
- 15:23Speaker 1: look forward to seeing the second. Thanks again for your time.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks a lot, appreciate it.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Smith's sit down interview with Burrow a likely run on
- 15:30Speaker 1: September twenty ninth as part of the Monday Night football
- 15:34Speaker 1: pregame show before the Bengals Week four matchup against Denver.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Still to come, I'll share my picks for the five
- 15:41Speaker 1: biggest standouts at training camp. But first, a conversation with
- 15:46Speaker 1: a guy who just missed the list. Wide receiver Charlie Jones.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Here's offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Chucks had probably his best sustained period of play with us,
- 16:00Speaker 5: and and you know he's when the ball is going
- 16:02Speaker 5: to him, he's making plays.
- 16:04Speaker 1: He can do a variety of things for us, and
- 16:06Speaker 1: he's been around a long time. He understands the offense.
- 16:07Speaker 1: So happy we've over seen some child. This is Charlie's
- 16:10Speaker 1: third NFL season, and unfortunately the first two have been
- 16:14Speaker 1: cut short by injuries. He missed seven games as a
- 16:16Speaker 1: rookie with a thumb injury and nine games last year
- 16:20Speaker 1: with a sports hardia. Charlie is healthy going into this
- 16:23Speaker 1: season and looking to remind people that he led the
- 16:26Speaker 1: nation in receptions in his final college season at Purdue.
- 16:32Speaker 1: How do you feel at this point of the preseason
- 16:35Speaker 1: in comparison to your first two years?
- 16:38Speaker 3: Uh, definitely more confident. You know, I'm feeling healthy. I've
- 16:43Speaker 3: been healthy this camp, which is a big part of it,
- 16:46Speaker 3: and just really that confidence piece, you know, being year three,
- 16:51Speaker 3: you know, had a really good offseason when when I
- 16:53Speaker 3: was able to be out there, I was doing a
- 16:56Speaker 3: lot of good work in Atlanta in the summer, and
- 17:01Speaker 3: you know, know where I'm supposed to be when I'm
- 17:02Speaker 3: supposed to be there, So all those kind of working
- 17:05Speaker 3: together and you know, just just helping me feel good
- 17:07Speaker 3: out there.
- 17:08Speaker 1: You were off to a really good start in training
- 17:10Speaker 1: camp last year, then you had a collision with a
- 17:13Speaker 1: teammate where you bump knees and that threw you back
- 17:15Speaker 1: for a few weeks. Then you recovered from that. We're
- 17:18Speaker 1: playing well in the regular season, particularly as a return specialist,
- 17:21Speaker 1: and then you got hurt and missed the second half
- 17:24Speaker 1: of the year. It's football, injuries happened. But how hard
- 17:28Speaker 1: was that for you personally and emotionally?
- 17:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's always tough, you know, when you're
- 17:35Speaker 3: not out there, and you know you work so hard
- 17:37Speaker 3: all year round to be out there and you know
- 17:41Speaker 3: to hopefully have a good year, and whenever you have
- 17:45Speaker 3: any type of injury, especially one where you know last
- 17:47Speaker 3: year I missed half the year, it's frustrating. But you
- 17:50Speaker 3: know for me it was, you know, not really much
- 17:54Speaker 3: I could do at the time. You know, I got
- 17:56Speaker 3: a different perspective, you know, whenever you're sitting out you
- 18:01Speaker 3: see things from from a little bit of a different
- 18:04Speaker 3: perspective and you can take that time to really learn
- 18:07Speaker 3: and watch. And you know, for me, you know, I
- 18:11Speaker 3: made some changes this offseason. I had some things that
- 18:14Speaker 3: I had to switch up with my routine, you know,
- 18:18Speaker 3: to stay healthy. And you know, you have more of
- 18:23Speaker 3: an appreciation for the game when when you're not playing
- 18:26Speaker 3: and you understand that, you know, you know this game
- 18:31Speaker 3: you can only play for so long, and you know,
- 18:33Speaker 3: whenever you miss time, it's you. You're kind of reminded
- 18:36Speaker 3: of that. So for me, I learned a lot. It's
- 18:40Speaker 3: definitely really frustrating, but it made me, you know, that
- 18:46Speaker 3: much more motivated for my third season.
- 18:50Speaker 1: What were the biggest changes in your routine?
- 18:53Speaker 3: Just kind of you know, the way I rehab the
- 18:58Speaker 3: way you know, I've always been pretty pretty routine based,
- 19:04Speaker 3: you know, throughout college, and you know, found a really
- 19:07Speaker 3: good routine that worked for me. And you know the
- 19:12Speaker 3: thing with routines is sometimes that they have to change.
- 19:15Speaker 3: You can't be too stubborn, you know when it comes
- 19:19Speaker 3: to that. If there's better ways of doing things that
- 19:22Speaker 3: you've done before, you know, you got to make that change.
- 19:24Speaker 3: So I think, you know, for me, you know, the
- 19:27Speaker 3: way I recovered, the way I you know, the things
- 19:32Speaker 3: that I focused on this off season as far as
- 19:34Speaker 3: being a receiver changed. You know, I went to Atlanta
- 19:38Speaker 3: for a little bit of the winter and in all
- 19:41Speaker 3: of the summer, which was a change for me, working
- 19:44Speaker 3: with new people, new strength staff, new receiver coaches, new
- 19:48Speaker 3: everything out there. So made a lot of changes this
- 19:52Speaker 3: offseason and you know, feel feel great about the decisions
- 19:57Speaker 3: I made and the and the changes that I made,
- 19:59Speaker 3: and I think that's that's helping me right now.
- 20:01Speaker 1: One of the people you worked with was Drew Lieberman,
- 20:04Speaker 1: the wide receiver guru that andre Yosi Vash and Chase
- 20:07Speaker 1: Brown started working with last year. Did you see what
- 20:10Speaker 1: it did for them and then want the same thing
- 20:13Speaker 1: for yourself.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely. I mean, you know, they went out, you know,
- 20:18Speaker 3: the year before, and you know I saw them come back,
- 20:22Speaker 3: and you know, I loved the routine that they came
- 20:26Speaker 3: back with, and you know, they both made huge strides
- 20:29Speaker 3: in year two and another jump going into our third year.
- 20:36Speaker 3: So you know that that's a thing where you know,
- 20:40Speaker 3: you know, those are you know, it's a bonus that
- 20:43Speaker 3: those are you know, my two best friends on the team,
- 20:45Speaker 3: and you know, I saw the improvements that they had
- 20:48Speaker 3: made and I was I wanted to be a part
- 20:50Speaker 3: of that, so I got out there with Drew. Loved Drew.
- 20:53Speaker 3: I think he's a great coach, you know, a good dude,
- 20:57Speaker 3: and he genuinely cares about us out there. So I
- 21:00Speaker 3: was definitely very happy with the results from Atlanta.
- 21:04Speaker 1: We're visiting with Charlie Jones. You had two surgical procedures
- 21:07Speaker 1: to fix a sports hernia? Was it a matter of
- 21:10Speaker 1: trying to figure out exactly what the problem was? Is
- 21:12Speaker 1: that why you had to have two.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, I mean we didn't really know that until
- 21:17Speaker 3: like right when it happened. We didn't really know it
- 21:19Speaker 3: was a hernia situation. So the second half of the season,
- 21:25Speaker 3: I was really you know, trying to go and just
- 21:28Speaker 3: couldn't go. And then I eventually, you know, flew out
- 21:32Speaker 3: to see a doctor and that's when I found out
- 21:35Speaker 3: it was a sports hernian. We had I think four
- 21:37Speaker 3: weeks left of the year, still trying to push through it.
- 21:41Speaker 3: But but yeah, you know, the first one, we we
- 21:44Speaker 3: did it like a true sports hernia surgery, and you know,
- 21:48Speaker 3: still was having complications still. Once I got out, once
- 21:52Speaker 3: I reheabbed here and went to Atlanta. I couldn't really
- 21:55Speaker 3: get out of my stance, and you know, I knew
- 21:57Speaker 3: something something must have been off. So, you know, we
- 22:00Speaker 3: saw a couple other people and you know, got a
- 22:02Speaker 3: different type of surgery done. And you know, it's always
- 22:07Speaker 3: a tough decision to make, especially having two in one year.
- 22:11Speaker 3: It's not for sure that I need to have that surgery.
- 22:14Speaker 3: You know, maybe just waited out see what happens. But
- 22:17Speaker 3: you know, I wanted to make every step or make
- 22:19Speaker 3: sure I was taking the right steps in the right direction,
- 22:22Speaker 3: to make sure, you know, by at least summer, I
- 22:24Speaker 3: was fully healthy. So you know, I'm definitely definitely glad
- 22:27Speaker 3: I ended up taking that second surgery.
- 22:30Speaker 1: We often hear about wide receivers earning their quarterbacks trust,
- 22:34Speaker 1: and you have definitely earned Joe Burrow's trust. I have
- 22:37Speaker 1: a multiple choice question for how a wide receiver earns
- 22:42Speaker 1: a quarterbacks trust. Is it one knowing your assignment and
- 22:46Speaker 1: running the right route? Is it two getting open? Is
- 22:51Speaker 1: it three catching the ball slash making plays? Or is
- 22:55Speaker 1: it four something that a layman like me wouldn't even know.
- 22:59Speaker 3: I think that's a tough question. It's really all the above.
- 23:02Speaker 3: There's a lot that goes into it. You know, he's
- 23:05Speaker 3: got to trust that you know what you're doing where
- 23:08Speaker 3: you're supposed to be. You got to make the play
- 23:12Speaker 3: when when he goes you so continue to build that trust. Uh.
- 23:16Speaker 3: And then there's other things, you know, like we're we're
- 23:18Speaker 3: people outside of this building. You got to build relationships
- 23:22Speaker 3: a little bit off the field, and you know, I
- 23:25Speaker 3: think that's something that you know, we've done, and you know,
- 23:30Speaker 3: I think there's a bunch of different things that go
- 23:31Speaker 3: into it. And you know, I think all around our
- 23:34Speaker 3: team is is pretty close this year in general. So
- 23:38Speaker 3: all those are factors into into earning the trust to
- 23:41Speaker 3: your quarterback as well as you know, all your teammates
- 23:44Speaker 3: and coaches.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Zach Taylor told us that on your touchdown catch last
- 23:49Speaker 1: week in Washington, you were the third option on that
- 23:51Speaker 1: play when you're running the route, do you know like
- 23:55Speaker 1: a quarterback based on the coverage pretty quickly? Okay, even
- 23:58Speaker 1: though I'm the third option, this is probably probably coming
- 24:00Speaker 1: to me.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, on some plays, you definitely
- 24:05Speaker 3: know kind of where you are in the progression. But
- 24:11Speaker 3: something for me that I've been focusing on, you know,
- 24:14Speaker 3: is you know, sometimes all right, I'm not the first
- 24:17Speaker 3: read on this. I can run my route a different
- 24:19Speaker 3: way or you know, set it up for someone else
- 24:22Speaker 3: in a certain way. But then having that mindset that
- 24:26Speaker 3: after I do a job, if this is a do
- 24:28Speaker 3: a job route, like I still could get this ball
- 24:32Speaker 3: at any point, especially with the quarterback like Joe who's
- 24:35Speaker 3: mobile in the pocket, who can scramble so well. So
- 24:39Speaker 3: really just going into every play thinking this is this
- 24:42Speaker 3: is going to come to me at some point at
- 24:44Speaker 3: this play, you know, whether it's you know, first read
- 24:47Speaker 3: or the last read. So that's that's kind of been
- 24:50Speaker 3: a little bit of a shift in my mentality for
- 24:53Speaker 3: this year is every time I'm out there, you know,
- 24:55Speaker 3: I'm expecting to get the ball even you know, no
- 24:58Speaker 3: matter who's in Like, that's just you have to think
- 25:01Speaker 3: as a receiver if you if you want to you know,
- 25:03Speaker 3: play Well.
- 25:04Speaker 1: We're visiting with Charlie Jones. You also had a kick
- 25:06Speaker 1: return out to the forty two yard line last week.
- 25:09Speaker 1: This is year two of this kickoff rule format that
- 25:13Speaker 1: the NFL went to last year. You had a kick
- 25:15Speaker 1: return touchdown last year. Do you like it? Is it
- 25:18Speaker 1: good for you as a return man?
- 25:20Speaker 3: I think it is and I think, you know, even
- 25:23Speaker 3: more this year than last year with the with the
- 25:25Speaker 3: rules of you know, got teams are going to want
- 25:29Speaker 3: to keep that ball in play. So being a returner,
- 25:32Speaker 3: I think this is definitely in favor of us. I
- 25:35Speaker 3: think we're going to see a lot more opportunities back there,
- 25:37Speaker 3: and you know, I really enjoy being back there. And
- 25:41Speaker 3: you know, I think it's a special play in this game.
- 25:45Speaker 3: It's you know, it's a it's a big spark. You
- 25:48Speaker 3: could really change the game back there, and that's what
- 25:50Speaker 3: I'm trying to do. So I'm definitely a fan of
- 25:52Speaker 3: the of the new rule.
- 25:54Speaker 1: One of the reasons why the NFL did it was safety.
- 25:58Speaker 1: There are a fewer high speed collisions. But I think
- 26:01Speaker 1: of that in terms of the blocking guys and the
- 26:02Speaker 1: tackling guys as opposed to the returner. Does it feel
- 26:06Speaker 1: any safer to you?
- 26:08Speaker 3: Maybe maybe a little bit. I mean, I guess with
- 26:11Speaker 3: the old rule, if someone you know, beat their beat
- 26:15Speaker 3: their blocker and you know, had that much more space,
- 26:21Speaker 3: you know, full speed, I guess he it could be
- 26:23Speaker 3: a little bit of a different hit. But you know,
- 26:25Speaker 3: it's still I feel like, you know, with the new rule,
- 26:29Speaker 3: I mean I'm almost getting up there quicker than I
- 26:31Speaker 3: was before, you know, especially if they're trying to kick
- 26:35Speaker 3: it right past the twenty yard line like like we
- 26:39Speaker 3: saw last week. You know, I'm getting up there. You
- 26:43Speaker 3: know it's kind of bang bang. So it's all I
- 26:46Speaker 3: feel like it might be the same as far as
- 26:49Speaker 3: you know, the hits that you might take or you know,
- 26:53Speaker 3: anything like that.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Well, as I said off the top, you're having a
- 26:56Speaker 1: great camp in preseason. It's great to see a healthy
- 26:59Speaker 1: and playing well. Best of luck this year.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Thank you, I appreciate it.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Charlie had a one hundred yard kick return touchdown last
- 27:06Speaker 1: year and an eighty one yard punt return touchdown as
- 27:10Speaker 1: a rookie. The only other player in team history with
- 27:13Speaker 1: a kick return touchdown and a punt return touchdown will
- 27:17Speaker 1: be inducted into the Ring of Honor in late October. Leapin'

- 27:43Speaker 1: Now time to share my top five training camp standouts.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Number five is rookie offensive lineman Dylan Fairchild. Now, part
- 27:53Speaker 1: of this is circumstantial. If I was just picking a
- 27:56Speaker 1: most impressive O lineman, it would be a Marius Mims
- 28:00Speaker 1: who makes past protection look comically easy. But Fairchild was
- 28:04Speaker 1: plugged into the starting lineup from day one and looks
- 28:08Speaker 1: like he belongs. Pro Football Focus graded him as the
- 28:12Speaker 1: NFL's fifth best guard in the preseason. Here's O line
- 28:15Speaker 1: coach Scott Peters on fair Child's ability to handle the
- 28:19Speaker 1: task of starting as a rookie.
- 28:21Speaker 6: Obviously, you know that's going in. It's it's rand new
- 28:23Speaker 6: for him. But I think he's done a good job.
- 28:26Speaker 6: But we're gonna keep pushing him, and he's pushing himself,
- 28:28Speaker 6: and so hopefully we just got to keep taking steps
- 28:31Speaker 6: each day.
- 28:32Speaker 1: You know, Patty help up really well in the one
- 28:35Speaker 1: on one pass rush and stuff. Today did he show
- 28:37Speaker 1: the trades that had you so excited us was a.
- 28:40Speaker 6: Big, strong kid with good length and you know, and
- 28:43Speaker 6: he's got good movement and the key is just kind
- 28:46Speaker 6: of being roll refined in a posture and getting this
- 28:49Speaker 6: timing of the strikes.
- 28:50Speaker 1: But he it's getting better.
- 28:52Speaker 6: So you know, for guys, most of the guys from college,
- 28:55Speaker 6: it's like he's like, we got to forget what we
- 28:57Speaker 6: did there. This is like two different games and check
- 28:59Speaker 6: your checkers and chess. Not going out there like a
- 29:01Speaker 6: meathead and try to head bang somebody because it wouldn't work.
- 29:03Speaker 6: So he's done a really nice job getting those things corrected.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Still ways to go, but yeah, I think today it
- 29:09Speaker 1: was nice to see.
- 29:09Speaker 6: Him get out there, get a chance to go in
- 29:11Speaker 6: one on ones where you get to test your your
- 29:13Speaker 6: stuff and see what you got to work at. And
- 29:16Speaker 6: you know, I tell the guys you either win or
- 29:18Speaker 6: you learn, so if you lose, you got to learn something.
- 29:20Speaker 6: There's always something to be learned. I think he's done
- 29:21Speaker 6: a good job as far so.
- 29:23Speaker 1: One thing that's gonna be stood out.
- 29:24Speaker 6: He has physical traits that that are pretty top end.
- 29:27Speaker 6: I mean, he's a really big guy's big, thick, square,
- 29:30Speaker 6: strong athletic.
- 29:32Speaker 1: He's tough. Dylan only allowed one pressure on twenty six
- 29:37Speaker 1: pass blocking snaps in the preseason. Standout Number four is
- 29:42Speaker 1: defensive tackle Chris Jenkins, last year's second round draft pick,
- 29:46Speaker 1: started nine games as a rookie, but was hampered by
- 29:49Speaker 1: the broken thumb that he suffered just before the start
- 29:52Speaker 1: of the season. Now that he's healthy, he frequently made
- 29:56Speaker 1: plays in training camp. Here's Al Golden.
- 29:58Speaker 7: I've said to you guys multiple time, I think Jenkins
- 30:01Speaker 7: arguably has had the best camp of anybody. I watched
- 30:05Speaker 7: what you guys watched last year. Unbeknownst to me, you know,
- 30:07Speaker 7: he missed a lot of camp with an arm issue,
- 30:11Speaker 7: and he was behind from the get go, So he
- 30:13Speaker 7: got behind the eight ball. And I don't think he
- 30:17Speaker 7: was uh either one hundred percent uh, nor was he
- 30:21Speaker 7: happy with uh, you know, the way it went for him.
- 30:24Speaker 7: And he's worked really hard to remedy that and and
- 30:28Speaker 7: really and and and take his games at the next level.
- 30:30Speaker 7: And he's done that for us. So I'm I'm uh,
- 30:32Speaker 7: I'm really excited about him. His versatility. Uh, he's become
- 30:36Speaker 7: a better pass rusher on early downs. We're giving him
- 30:40Speaker 7: the freedom to do that. And Uh, he's strong, he
- 30:42Speaker 7: brings energy. He's a horrible basketball player in here when
- 30:46Speaker 7: when when we when we shoot, he's awful.
- 30:47Speaker 1: But he's really done a nice job in terms of that.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Going into his senior year at Michigan, Jenkins was ranked
- 30:53Speaker 1: as the sixth biggest athletic freak in college football for
- 30:58Speaker 1: his combination of strength and quickquickness. Training camp standout Number
- 31:02Speaker 1: three is another athletic freak, andre yosivaj. No Bengals receiver
- 31:08Speaker 1: including Jamar Chase and T Higgins caught more passes of
- 31:11Speaker 1: twenty plus yards during camp than Yosi vash. I put
- 31:15Speaker 1: it this way, everything that people are hoping that Jermaine
- 31:19Speaker 1: Burton can become andre Yosi vash already is big, strong, fast,
- 31:27Speaker 1: and tough. Here's Dan Pitcher.
- 31:30Speaker 8: He's the perfect example of a guy that you take
- 31:33Speaker 8: late in the draft because of his physical gifts. He's
- 31:37Speaker 8: got tremendous intelligence. Right, So you got a smart guy
- 31:39Speaker 8: with physical gifts coming from a small school entering the
- 31:44Speaker 8: big pond, right and having to figure out what that
- 31:47Speaker 8: means and the physicality that comes with that and the
- 31:50Speaker 8: consistency that we need out of him to be the
- 31:52Speaker 8: passing attack that we want to be. So he makes
- 31:54Speaker 8: a jump from year one to two. Now from two
- 31:56Speaker 8: to three, you see the confidence, you see the chest out,
- 31:59Speaker 8: you see you see just how he carries himself like
- 32:02Speaker 8: he believes that he's like those other two guys, and
- 32:07Speaker 8: he's making steps to get there. And in a lot
- 32:09Speaker 8: of other buildings he would have the opportunity that a T.
- 32:12Speaker 8: Higgins has, and so when you don't have that same volume,
- 32:16Speaker 8: he knows that when the ball does come his way,
- 32:18Speaker 8: he's got to take advantage of it. And I just
- 32:19Speaker 8: think you've seen the confidence grow, super proud of his progression,
- 32:24Speaker 8: and I think you're only going to see him continue
- 32:26Speaker 8: to get better.
- 32:27Speaker 1: The Bengals had the Cincinnati three way when Tyler Boyd
- 32:30Speaker 1: was here. I think they have it again with andre
- 32:33Speaker 1: Yosi Vash. My number two training camp standout is Cam
- 32:37Speaker 1: Taylor Britt. After a rocky twenty twenty four, CTB looks
- 32:42Speaker 1: like the player who is being touted as a possible
- 32:45Speaker 1: pro bowler prior to last season. Cornerbacks coach Chuck Burks
- 32:50Speaker 1: says it's all about consistency, and Taylor Britt has taken
- 32:54Speaker 1: that message to heart. That's what I plan to do. Man,
- 32:56Speaker 1: be consistent in everything that I do.
- 32:58Speaker 9: A routine mayher the same time every morning, the same routine,
- 33:02Speaker 9: and literally I'm go go lift right now, go home,
- 33:04Speaker 9: walk the dolls, eat. I'll do the same thing every day.
- 33:08Speaker 1: So when he says consistency, he's not talking down to down,
- 33:11Speaker 1: he's talking every aspect of your life. Life is a problem.
- 33:15Speaker 9: If you don't keep your room clean, you can't be right.
- 33:17Speaker 9: As simple as that. You don't make your bed in
- 33:19Speaker 9: the morning. You know, you don't start your day off right.
- 33:20Speaker 9: And that's kind of the same thing. But how I
- 33:22Speaker 9: go to the footballs doesn't man in the day you
- 33:23Speaker 9: come in this building, it will work, and you gotta
- 33:26Speaker 9: do the same thing every day.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Zach Taylor says he's got great expectations for Cam this year.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Finally training camps stand out number one, and there's no
- 33:37Speaker 1: drum roll needed. It's obviously Joe Burrow. He is throwing
- 33:41Speaker 1: the ball with surgical precision and led the team to
- 33:45Speaker 1: four touchdown drives on five preseason possessions. That's eighty percent.
- 33:50Speaker 1: To put that in perspective, the league average on touchdowns
- 33:54Speaker 1: per drive last year was twenty four percent. Burrow just
- 34:00Speaker 1: keeps getting better, largely because that's his focus.
- 34:04Speaker 10: Constantly improving every day in every facet of your game.
- 34:09Speaker 10: There's never an area of your game that you stop
- 34:13Speaker 10: working on. You know, obviously you go into an offseason
- 34:20Speaker 10: and you reflect on on the year before and think about,
- 34:23Speaker 10: you know, things you could have done better, things you
- 34:26Speaker 10: could have done more, things you could have done less.
- 34:28Speaker 10: But you know, when you get into into the training,
- 34:32Speaker 10: you're trying to get better and every every faster of
- 34:34Speaker 10: your game.
- 34:35Speaker 4: This time of year, Joe, everybody's got this idea of
- 34:38Speaker 4: who the best quarterbacks are in the NFL. And certainly
- 34:42Speaker 4: we look back to last year's stats or who wanted
- 34:44Speaker 4: the playoffs? What would you consider the criteria as the
- 34:47Speaker 4: separator of the best quarterbacks in the ENA? But when
- 34:50Speaker 4: you start talking about the elite names, what's the separator
- 34:53Speaker 4: for those guys?
- 34:55Speaker 10: I think consistency is what it is at the end.
- 34:58Speaker 5: Of the day.
- 34:59Speaker 10: You know, there's anybody can go out and do it
- 35:01Speaker 10: for a game, a couple games, four games, five games,
- 35:07Speaker 10: But can you do it for seventeen games? Can you
- 35:10Speaker 10: do it for years and years and years in a row?
- 35:13Speaker 10: That's a I think that's what ultimately separates the great
- 35:17Speaker 10: ones from the good ones. And you know, I think
- 35:20Speaker 10: you can tell the guys that do it year in
- 35:22Speaker 10: and year out.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Great question there by Fox nineteen's Joe Daniman. That wraps
