- 0:00Speaker 1: The In This League Podcast Network.
- 0:05Speaker 2: This is Dynasty Sports Life, a podcast about playing fantasy baseball, basketball, football,
- 0:10Speaker 2: and hockey.
- 0:12Speaker 1: 365 days a year. Here's your host, Jesse Sevier. Welcome
- 0:19Speaker 1: to the Dynasty Sports Life, Jesse Sevier. Here to talk
- 0:22Speaker 1: to you. What do you know about the wonderful world
- 0:25Speaker 1: of Dynasty Fantasy Sports? What is going on in Dynasty
- 0:29Speaker 1: Fantasy Sports, folks? Baseball is coming to a conclusion that
- 0:32Speaker 1: is not necessarily a fantasy story. It's a nice story
- 0:36Speaker 1: for the Milwaukee Brewers, yes sir, so far. Hopefully by
- 0:40Speaker 1: the time you're listening to this, I don't know. But also,
- 0:43Speaker 1: it is the precursor to the lockout, and Lord knows
- 0:46Speaker 1: what's going to happen to our Dynasty Baseball teams next year.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I'm preparing the 30-team league for... the upcoming draft. And yeah,
- 0:54Speaker 1: it's just a time of uncertainty to be dealing with
- 0:57Speaker 1: right now. On football, gosh, we're well into the season.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Hockey too. Hockey is 10% of the way done, more
- 1:04Speaker 1: than 10% of the way done. Football, heck, we're more
- 1:07Speaker 1: than a quarter done. We're dealing with the playoffs quicker
- 1:10Speaker 1: than you think. At least basketball. Basketball just started. And yeah,
- 1:14Speaker 1: I've been cutting into some league pass games this week
- 1:18Speaker 1: and trying to decide how much I can endure the
- 1:21Speaker 1: Milwaukee Bucks this year. Folks, this, however, is going to
- 1:26Speaker 1: be about none of those sports, not directly, because we're
- 1:28Speaker 1: going to talk about some future NFL pros who are
- 1:31Speaker 1: currently college football players. And for that, who else but
- 1:36Speaker 1: John Lobb, right after this. Welcome back to the show,
- 1:44Speaker 1: John Lobb, the man who follows college fantasy football, who's
- 1:48Speaker 1: following the college football very closely for us. How you
- 1:51Speaker 1: doing today, John?
- 1:52Speaker 2: I'm doing great, man. I'm going to look forward to Michigan,
- 1:55Speaker 2: Indiana later this afternoon. And there's a plethora of games
- 1:59Speaker 2: on tonight that I'm looking forward to. So I love
- 2:02Speaker 2: this time of year. I went to the UConn game
- 2:04Speaker 2: last night, got to enjoy some fall weather in the Northeast.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So now I get to watch football all day.
- 2:12Speaker 1: That's right. That's right. That is one thing you got
- 2:14Speaker 1: to love. Do you stay up for the Hawaii test ever, John?
- 2:17Speaker 2: You know, I've hit a certain age in my life.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I can't make it to the one o'clock games anymore.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I usually hit the bed with my wife around 10.
- 2:28Speaker 2: She's pretty cool, but she likes me in bed by 10.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So I'm watching the TV. But then by 11, I'm just,
- 2:35Speaker 2: I'm out. I'm out.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Dirty secret, John. I moved in, I don't know, but
- 2:40Speaker 1: I moved to the Vancouver Island this year. Pacific time
- 2:44Speaker 1: is the right place. Yeah. It's the right place to
- 2:47Speaker 1: watch football, man. I used to be the guy who like,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I go to bed at 10. I cannot, I don't
- 2:52Speaker 1: even want to start Monday night football. This is done
- 2:56Speaker 1: at eight.
- 2:56Speaker 2: What the heck do I care?
- 2:57Speaker 1: This is great.
- 3:00Speaker 2: That's unbelievable, dude. It must be. Is it a different,
- 3:02Speaker 2: I was thinking about how different it would be living
- 3:04Speaker 2: in Washington. Compared to Connecticut for football, get up at
- 3:10Speaker 2: nine or 10 and there's a game on.
- 3:12Speaker 1: This is right. Yeah. It's basically Washington. We could see
- 3:15Speaker 1: him off the coast. So yeah, it's the same deal. Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 1: It's awesome. So yeah, it's the right time zone for sports, but, but.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Anyway, World Series, everything's earlier.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Yes. Yes.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Cause the World Series on the East, if they're
- 3:30Speaker 2: playing on the West coast right now, the World Series
- 3:33Speaker 2: is a nightmare. It's like 1130. It's going to end
- 3:37Speaker 2: in the ninth inning. And if you go to extra innings,
- 3:40Speaker 2: I'm like, man, it's really sad. Cause I grew up
- 3:43Speaker 2: in a generation where the first pitch would be maybe
- 3:46Speaker 2: seven 38 o'clock and you could watch it until 10
- 3:51Speaker 2: and the games are quicker back then. Now it's just like,
- 3:55Speaker 2: I can't make it unless it's my favorite team, which
- 3:57Speaker 2: the Orioles never get in. So I don't have to
- 3:59Speaker 2: worry about that, but there's no reason to stay up
- 4:02Speaker 2: all night. Yeah.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it's, I'm telling you, I love a sports situation here.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Nice.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I got to tell you, but I love the college
- 4:10Speaker 1: football situation. I'm bummed that I'm not playing college fantasy
- 4:13Speaker 1: football this year.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I was wondering if you were, because last year was
- 4:16Speaker 2: your first year, right?
- 4:17Speaker 1: No, I played it. I dipped my toe in one
- 4:21Speaker 1: year and then I was out one year and in
- 4:23Speaker 1: one year. And like last year I got in with
- 4:26Speaker 1: you and I was, that was so much fun. That league.
- 4:28Speaker 2: The Joe's versus pros league, right?
- 4:31Speaker 1: The Joes versus pros. I was briefly in the lead
- 4:33Speaker 1: of it, and then my whole team collapsed, and the
- 4:35Speaker 1: thing went to heck. But college football is just– it
- 4:39Speaker 1: is a fun sport, college fantasy football.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Because you can– the person who ends up winning does
- 4:45Speaker 1: not have usually the future first-round picks for the NFL
- 4:50Speaker 1: on their team. They've got guys who are just going
- 4:53Speaker 1: to produce like crazy in college.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And are not necessarily expected to have the impact, but
- 4:59Speaker 1: that's what makes it fun. There's it's somebody with like,
- 5:02Speaker 1: I had Eli Heidenreich. I talked about before from what
- 5:06Speaker 1: he was in Navy, right?
- 5:07Speaker 2: He wasn't an army.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I got that wrong.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Navy, but he was basically a running back who got
- 5:14Speaker 1: a ton of yards, but he was wide receiver eligible
- 5:17Speaker 1: because of the Navy soft. That's so I had basically
- 5:19Speaker 1: an extra running back going at wide receiver every week.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And that's, that worked for a while, but yeah, no, no,
- 5:27Speaker 1: it's a fun game.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I love the college fans football. I lost the game
- 5:31Speaker 2: last week in the Joe's first pros. Yeah. I scored
- 5:36Speaker 2: 235 points and my opponent got two 45 and I'm
- 5:39Speaker 2: telling you, it was such a marvelous thing. And I lost,
- 5:43Speaker 2: I went to bed. We were talking about our early bedtime, right?
- 5:47Speaker 2: So I go to bed and my opponent had Michael
- 5:50Speaker 2: Ford Stanford running back. He scored 51 points. I woke
- 5:55Speaker 2: up and I was like, what the hell happened to me?
- 6:00Speaker 2: Only in college fantasy football. And I've seen this a
- 6:04Speaker 2: bunch of times, dude, where you have a good 35-point
- 6:09Speaker 2: lead and literally that 11 o'clock kickoff on the West
- 6:13Speaker 2: Coast or Hawaii, you can have an opponent who will
- 6:16Speaker 2: get 45 points out of the player and you wake
- 6:19Speaker 2: up and you lost. It's great. It's so much fun.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I wonder, John, I don't know if you've been involved
- 6:25Speaker 1: with it, but I wonder if more people are going
- 6:27Speaker 1: to get involved. FanTracks now has the thing where you
- 6:29Speaker 1: can connect a college and a pro fantasy team so
- 6:34Speaker 1: that you can see the rosters from each other. You
- 6:36Speaker 1: have one of those?
- 6:37Speaker 2: I have one league. It's called the Debbie League or
- 6:40Speaker 2: Campus to Canton League. Yeah. Yeah, I have one of those.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I like it very much. It's hard to get the
- 6:48Speaker 2: Campus to Canton Leagues that I've been in Too many
- 6:52Speaker 2: people quit after one or two years. It's just, it's
- 6:56Speaker 2: a lot of work. And I think people, and it's
- 6:59Speaker 2: very hard to get out if you're to grind your
- 7:03Speaker 2: way back up to competitiveness. So I, this is going
- 7:06Speaker 2: to sound interesting, but what I do now is, I
- 7:09Speaker 2: don't like to lock in, like some people play C2C
- 7:13Speaker 2: with 50-man locked rosters. What I've learned is if you
- 7:18Speaker 2: lock that many players, if you're at the bottom, people
- 7:21Speaker 2: tend to quit because there's no hope to get out
- 7:24Speaker 2: of it. So I like to lock maybe 10 or
- 7:27Speaker 2: 15 players. So at least most of us will have
- 7:31Speaker 2: five really good players no matter what. Then that window
- 7:35Speaker 2: of 10 to 15. And then you might be able
- 7:38Speaker 2: to draft 20 good players, right? You have to give,
- 7:42Speaker 2: the NFL does better than anyone. You have to give
- 7:44Speaker 2: teams at the bottom an opportunity to rebuild in a
- 7:49Speaker 2: reasonable amount of time. No one's going to put $ 50
- 7:53Speaker 2: in a league for four or five years to maybe
- 7:57Speaker 2: get a shot at winning it. They just leave too much.
- 8:01Speaker 2: So I've kind of changed the ones that I play
- 8:04Speaker 2: in so that it's a little more NFL-oriented, like with
- 8:07Speaker 2: the first pick overall every year, so that you have
- 8:10Speaker 2: an opportunity to rebuild in a quicker time period. Same
- 8:14Speaker 2: thing like NIL, right? You can now rebuild the program.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Like Oregon State is one of the most incredible offensive programs.
- 8:24Speaker 2: They bring in a new quarterback. They got a new coach.
- 8:26Speaker 2: And they bring in a wide receiver freshman who's a superstar.
- 8:30Speaker 2: You can't do that in a dynasty league with 60
- 8:34Speaker 2: players that you can't draft and be competitive.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. So I would, I'm curious to try that.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I've always been campus Canton curious. We do a lot
- 8:45Speaker 1: of stuff on our, we talk a lot of our
- 8:48Speaker 1: show about having NFL teams where you do have Debbie players.
- 8:52Speaker 1: But the difference in this, the campus of Canton is
- 8:54Speaker 1: they play. You have a contest going on there.
- 8:57Speaker 2: That's why I like it more. Oh, man.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it's got to be something. But, John, you are
- 9:03Speaker 1: way into the college fantasy football game. You put up rankings.
- 9:06Speaker 1: You do stuff at fan tracks. I've played in your league.
- 9:09Speaker 1: It is incredibly cool. It's a different sport. Today, we're
- 9:13Speaker 1: going to be talking a little bit about 2027 NFL Draft,
- 9:17Speaker 1: which is closely related. but slightly different. So I want
- 9:20Speaker 1: to frame that for the listeners here so that they
- 9:22Speaker 1: know what we're doing here. If you look at John's
- 9:25Speaker 1: preseason college fantasy football ranks, they were very good. The
- 9:29Speaker 1: top wide receiver, I think everybody agrees, is Jeremiah Smith.
- 9:32Speaker 1: But beyond that, you had Malachi Toney and you had
- 9:36Speaker 1: Easton Messer. Malachi Toney isn't going to be discussed today
- 9:40Speaker 1: because he was too young for the draft this year.
- 9:42Speaker 1: So he won't be part of the 2027 draft. Easton Messer,
- 9:46Speaker 1: if you're aware who he is, fallen out in college,
- 9:51Speaker 1: but he's 5'7, and he's Florida Atlantic.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Unfortunately, he might be like you mentioned Eli Heidenreich. He
- 10:00Speaker 2: might get seventh round capital, right? Might, or he'll definitely
- 10:04Speaker 2: be invited to a camp if he isn't drafted, but
- 10:08Speaker 2: we know the odds of a undrafted free agent are
- 10:11Speaker 2: pretty rare. Yeah.
- 10:13Speaker 1: And this guy's top three legitimately in college fantasy football,
- 10:17Speaker 1: but it's a whole different game. So I really wanted
- 10:20Speaker 1: to talk about, because I check in, I look at these,
- 10:22Speaker 1: some of these Devies before the season, because I'm thinking
- 10:25Speaker 1: about them last year. We have some of our leagues
- 10:28Speaker 1: where we can take college fantasy football players or college
- 10:31Speaker 1: players who are coming out in future years for our
- 10:33Speaker 1: NFL draft. So I'm aware of some of that. I
- 10:36Speaker 1: do follow the college game, but I really wanted to
- 10:39Speaker 1: talk about some value changers with you today. Guys who
- 10:43Speaker 1: their stock is rising or their stock I don't know.
- 10:45Speaker 1: To me, at least seems to be falling. It's so hard.
- 10:48Speaker 1: What's the market right now? Because nobody's drafting an NFL draft.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Except you're right about that.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Dropping mock drafts online. Like they're hot. There's some guys
- 10:57Speaker 1: who I was kind of going to exclude today, John.
- 10:59Speaker 1: And you can tell me if I'm wrong about any
- 11:00Speaker 1: of these, because I feel like they started out high
- 11:03Speaker 1: and they're still pretty high. So we'll get to them
- 11:06Speaker 1: in time, but there isn't necessarily much that's changed during
- 11:09Speaker 1: the season in terms of their status necessarily. Darian Mensah,
- 11:13Speaker 1: the quarterback at Miami, came down from Duke and he's amazing.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Jaden Baugh, who's at Florida running back there. Jeremiah Smith,
- 11:21Speaker 1: very possible Heisman guy because the best wide receiver in
- 11:25Speaker 1: fantasy in college is always the next guy coming up
- 11:28Speaker 1: on Ohio State.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Well, can I say one thing?
- 11:31Speaker 1: Sure, yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Without Brian Hartline there and looking at the depth chart
- 11:38Speaker 2: at Ohio State, I will say for the first time
- 11:41Speaker 2: in 10 or 12 years, I'm a little concerned with
- 11:46Speaker 2: what is following the Buckeyes. We'll find out when there's
- 11:50Speaker 2: lots of time. But I'll tell you right now, this
- 11:52Speaker 2: is the first time I can look at the depth
- 11:54Speaker 2: chart and say, wow, there's not a clear superstar sitting
- 11:59Speaker 2: on that bench or waiting for to be propelled into
- 12:04Speaker 2: the number one spot. So it's very, it's going to
- 12:07Speaker 2: be very interesting. Heartline was a very good wide receiver coach,
- 12:12Speaker 2: both recruiting and coaching. Wow. Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 1: So, but Jeremiah Smith.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Well, they've got him. They're okay. Except they don't have
- 12:21Speaker 1: a quarterback to throw it to him anymore, but yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Kwon Lacey, I believe, but that's old miss, right? One
- 12:27Speaker 1: of the top running backs in the nation. And Jamari
- 12:30Speaker 1: Johnson is, of Oregon, a tight end who I like
- 12:33Speaker 1: for the season. It seems like there's a kid down
- 12:35Speaker 1: in LSU who maybe has surpassed him at this point.
- 12:38Speaker 1: But anyway, there's a couple of good tight ends coming
- 12:40Speaker 1: in this year.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Yes. I think there'll be one or two in the
- 12:44Speaker 2: first round. Depending on athletic scores, we never know for sure.
- 12:50Speaker 2: But from what they look like and what I've read
- 12:52Speaker 2: on their high school athleticism and stuff like that, there
- 12:56Speaker 2: is a very good chance that two of them will
- 12:58Speaker 2: be first-round picks.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about some guys first who I think
- 13:04Speaker 1: are rising a little bit. Let's do the optimistic stuff.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I hate to end on the pessimism, but let's start
- 13:09Speaker 1: with the optimism anyway, John. All right. A couple of guys. Now,
- 13:12Speaker 1: you talked about guys who absolutely blew up at small
- 13:16Speaker 1: schools and were college fantasy football cheat codes. A lot
- 13:19Speaker 1: of that was happening at North Texas last year, and
- 13:22Speaker 1: a kid named Drew Mestemaker at Oklahoma State moved up there,
- 13:26Speaker 1: and he is balling out to the point where While
- 13:29Speaker 1: people were talking about maybe this kid could make the
- 13:31Speaker 1: transition and be good in playing at a big level,
- 13:35Speaker 1: but let's take our time because Oklahoma, that's a big
- 13:37Speaker 1: jump for him. Now I see mock drafts where he's
- 13:39Speaker 1: in the top five, and there's a possibility that this
- 13:42Speaker 1: is going to be the quarterback out of this class.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Drew Mestemaker at OK State, who absolutely, if you look
- 13:48Speaker 1: at the numbers, kids' numbers have blown up over the years.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And Oklahoma State, after an embarrassing, I think, what did
- 13:54Speaker 1: they lose to Tulsa the first week?
- 13:55Speaker 2: First week, Tulsa.
- 13:57Speaker 1: They've gone nuts. So tell us about Drew Messamaker there, John.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Much better than I thought. And I watched him a
- 14:05Speaker 2: lot last year at North Texas. But he had a coach,
- 14:08Speaker 2: Eric Morris, and that was a kind of funky, wide
- 14:11Speaker 2: open offensive scheme, pass happy. And he was playing against
- 14:17Speaker 2: American Conference at American Conference competition. So I was a
- 14:22Speaker 2: little concerned moving up to the P4 level, even though
- 14:27Speaker 2: it's the Big 12, Oklahoma State is a much bigger
- 14:30Speaker 2: jump in competition. The young man did not play in
- 14:34Speaker 2: high school quarterback. I give this young man all the
- 14:37Speaker 2: credit in the world. I don't think he started a
- 14:39Speaker 2: game in high school at quarterback, but he just kept working,
- 14:43Speaker 2: just believed in himself and just kept moving forward. And
- 14:48Speaker 2: I will be completely honest. He has been so much
- 14:52Speaker 2: better this year. at Oklahoma State than I thought. He
- 14:56Speaker 2: passes the eyeball test, my friend. He is more athletic
- 15:01Speaker 2: than I perceived. He's better on the rollouts and throwing
- 15:07Speaker 2: when he's on the move. He keeps his eyes downfield.
- 15:11Speaker 2: He can run. I don't want necessarily a running quarterback
- 15:16Speaker 2: who throws. I want a throwing quarterback who can run.
- 15:20Speaker 2: He clearly has your baseline level of scrambling ability to
- 15:25Speaker 2: avoid pass rushers and to be able to buy time
- 15:29Speaker 2: in the pocket. And his arm strength, I didn't know
- 15:33Speaker 2: what it would be like. Just my anecdotal evidence from
- 15:36Speaker 2: last year to this year, I think his arm strength's better.
- 15:39Speaker 2: I think most people don't improve arm strength, but there
- 15:43Speaker 2: are some who get better as they age and maybe
- 15:47Speaker 2: their mechanics or just their muscle memory, they just get better.
- 15:52Speaker 2: I think Drew Messermaker, now I'm shocked that he's getting
- 15:55Speaker 2: discussed in the top five, but I haven't broken down
- 15:59Speaker 2: the film to tell you. This is just watching the
- 16:02Speaker 2: Cowboys play football. I think I've seen three of their games.
- 16:06Speaker 2: I love Caleb Hawkins, their running back. So I've watched
- 16:09Speaker 2: Cowboys and he definitely has NFL traits. Is he a
- 16:14Speaker 2: top five? I can't tell you that for sure. But
- 16:17Speaker 2: the NFL scouting complex seems to think he's that guy
- 16:21Speaker 2: right now. And I'm just wondering if he's a bright, new,
- 16:25Speaker 2: shining object and how much they've really looked at him.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Because I got to put him under the microscope in
- 16:31Speaker 2: more detail. But I'll say this. The eyeball test says
- 16:35Speaker 2: he's got a first-round grade right now.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Yeah, he didn't even start his first year at North Texas.
- 16:41Speaker 2: No! No.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Redshirted for a year but then again if he didn't
- 16:44Speaker 1: play quarterback in high school then yeah maybe but yeah
- 16:48Speaker 1: but he's just so really we're looking at one superstar
- 16:52Speaker 1: level in in the what the american conference last year
- 16:55Speaker 1: and then a half season of leading the big 12
- 16:59Speaker 1: and passing so far this year yes wow yeah.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I will say this i hope with the way college
- 17:07Speaker 2: football is structured with nil and I'm sure he can
- 17:10Speaker 2: get an insurance policy, I think it would be beneficial
- 17:15Speaker 2: for the young man to return and play another season
- 17:17Speaker 2: on college. Because I'm very adamant about they need 30
- 17:21Speaker 2: starts in college football. One reason I had no Anthony Richardson,
- 17:26Speaker 2: and there's obviously other problems off the field, but the
- 17:29Speaker 2: reason why I never took Anthony Richardson, he didn't have
- 17:33Speaker 2: those 30 starts. He basically only had one year of
- 17:35Speaker 2: college football. I'm a big proponent that these young men
- 17:40Speaker 2: need reps at the college level. And I think Messmaker
- 17:45Speaker 2: could so much benefit. He'd probably get $ 5 million a
- 17:49Speaker 2: year at Oklahoma State, get his insurance policy, go back
- 17:54Speaker 2: one year, young man. I really hope he stays because
- 17:58Speaker 2: he could benefit a lot.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I just looked at, I was trying to figure
- 18:02Speaker 1: out if T. Boone Pickens was still around, could cut.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Him a check. No, I thought he, Am I right?
- 18:06Speaker 1: He passed a decade ago. Yeah.
- 18:08Speaker 2: I thought so. I was off.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Sorry, T.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Boone.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Sorry, T. Boone's family. Good luck, Oklahoma State. Try to
- 18:13Speaker 1: keep him there. The second guy took a court order
- 18:17Speaker 1: to keep in college this year, and that was Trinidad
- 18:20Speaker 1: Chambliss at Ole Miss. Everybody, people who watched college football
- 18:24Speaker 1: last year remember this guy just balling out. He was amazing,
- 18:29Speaker 1: and he continues to be. While we're going to talk
- 18:32Speaker 1: about a lot of guys who seem to be falling
- 18:33Speaker 1: out of that quarterback conversation, Trinidad Chambliss, who's been in
- 18:36Speaker 1: college for seven years. I don't know how many years
- 18:39Speaker 1: he's been there.
- 18:40Speaker 2: So he started at Ferris State, and I think he
- 18:44Speaker 2: might have gone somewhere before Ferris State, like a Juco
- 18:48Speaker 2: maybe or something, if I remember. So he has been
- 18:51Speaker 2: in school for seven years.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's why– it was controversial for him even
- 18:56Speaker 1: to play in. So in other words, he's going to
- 18:59Speaker 1: be old by the time he comes out. He's going
- 19:01Speaker 1: to be a mature young man. He has grown several
- 19:04Speaker 1: beards that he shaved. I'm sure at this point in
- 19:06Speaker 1: his life, worn out some razors, but yeah, Trinidad Chambliss though,
- 19:10Speaker 1: seems to be because of just, you can't deny the play.
- 19:14Speaker 1: He's an exciting guy to watch play. And he's getting
- 19:18Speaker 1: to the point where he's almost at the top of
- 19:19Speaker 1: the heap here. He's one of the top couple of
- 19:21Speaker 1: quarterbacks in the mix. It looks in the NFL draft
- 19:24Speaker 1: next year. So, Trinidad Chambliss, can this carry over to
- 19:28Speaker 1: the pros, John? What do you think of this guy's game?
- 19:31Speaker 2: I have him in my top three prospects at mental notes,
- 19:34Speaker 2: writing down. He definitely has the skill set to succeed
- 19:39Speaker 2: at the NFL. He has the arm talent, the athletic ability,
- 19:42Speaker 2: the experience. He can run the football. I like how,
- 19:47Speaker 2: just like Messamaker, he keeps his eyes down. while he's scrambling.
- 19:52Speaker 2: He will run when he has to, but he's looking
- 19:56Speaker 2: to throw the ball. Also what I like, if you've
- 19:59Speaker 2: watched Ole Miss this year, you watch Trinidad Chambliss, he
- 20:03Speaker 2: makes some great what I call chutzpah throws. He throws
- 20:08Speaker 2: that ball into tight windows. And so many times we
- 20:13Speaker 2: watch these young men where the wide receivers are so
- 20:17Speaker 2: open because of the scheme or they're just afraid to
- 20:20Speaker 2: throw into tight windows. Trinidad Chambliss is not afraid to
- 20:25Speaker 2: throw that ball down the seam with the safety and
- 20:28Speaker 2: a cornerback following his receiver. And I think he's incredibly
- 20:33Speaker 2: accurate with the football when his wide receivers are there.
- 20:37Speaker 2: He does have some anticipatory throws on film, which I
- 20:40Speaker 2: like very much. I think he has NFL written all
- 20:44Speaker 2: over him, first-round grade. My only concern, he looks small
- 20:50Speaker 2: on film. I wonder if he's over 6 feet, and
- 20:55Speaker 2: is he 210 pounds? Now, it's not the end-all and be-all.
- 21:00Speaker 2: I understand it. But I wonder, what if he comes
- 21:03Speaker 2: in at 5'11, 200? Now, Bryce Young took some time
- 21:08Speaker 2: to develop. He's a little undersized, but we see how
- 21:11Speaker 2: well Bryce Young is now playing for the Carolina Panthers.
- 21:15Speaker 2: But I wonder how big Trinidad Chambliss actually is. But
- 21:19Speaker 2: I think from a football skill set, he's a first-round
- 21:23Speaker 2: draft pick.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. That seems to be the consensus of
- 21:27Speaker 1: what's going on. Trinidad Chambliss refused to release his hold
- 21:32Speaker 1: on QB1. they're in Ole Miss and a guy named
- 21:36Speaker 1: Austin Simmons was his backup for the last few years.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And I had not considered this guy to be a
- 21:43Speaker 1: whole thing, but now I'm seeing him ranked as he's
- 21:46Speaker 1: going to Missouri. He's thrown for a lot of yards.
- 21:49Speaker 1: He's barely played his first couple of years at, at
- 21:52Speaker 1: Ole Miss, but they're in Missouri. He's now Mel Kiper
- 21:56Speaker 1: thinks of him as a top five quarterback prospect in
- 21:59Speaker 1: this year's draft. So Austin Simmons is kind of balling.
- 22:02Speaker 1: There is where that I just told you where he
- 22:04Speaker 1: came from, but where did this kid come from?
- 22:06Speaker 2: Austin Simmons is a, he was a pitcher, left-handed pitcher
- 22:12Speaker 2: in high school. He actually threw the football in college,
- 22:18Speaker 2: baseball in college for a little bit. I'll say this,
- 22:22Speaker 2: his arm strength is absolutely stunning. I'm talking elite Jeff
- 22:31Speaker 2: George for us old guys who watch Jeff George with
- 22:36Speaker 2: Indianapolis coming out of Illinois. His arm strength is outstanding.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I watched him in back-to-back game in Kansas against Kansas.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I was blown away at how good this young man
- 22:50Speaker 2: can throw the football. And then I watched him against
- 22:53Speaker 2: Mississippi State. I'll say this, though, my friend. He needs
- 22:58Speaker 2: another season on campus. This is his first season starting.
- 23:03Speaker 2: He does make some mistakes still that I'm like, ooh,
- 23:07Speaker 2: not a good throw. He's also been very up and down,
- 23:11Speaker 2: my friend. He has not been consistent. He could benefit
- 23:17Speaker 2: tremendously by another year on campus. I have a second
- 23:22Speaker 2: round grade on him right now. One, he hasn't played
- 23:24Speaker 2: enough games of college football. He needs the experience. And two,
- 23:29Speaker 2: he still makes me shake my head on decision-making. But
- 23:34Speaker 2: there's this play. If you watch the game against Kansas, oh,
- 23:38Speaker 2: my God. You know how the NFL or the college
- 23:41Speaker 2: football has wider hash marks? If everyone doesn't know, college
- 23:44Speaker 2: football has wider hash marks. He is on the far
- 23:48Speaker 2: right hash mark. He throws the ball 20 yards down
- 23:53Speaker 2: the field on the left hash mark. I think he
- 23:58Speaker 2: threw it on a rope. There was no loft that
- 24:01Speaker 2: I could tell. It was one of the better throws
- 24:04Speaker 2: I've seen in the last four years from a college quarterback.
- 24:09Speaker 2: He has incredible arm strength and athletic ability. But games matter.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Experience matters. He's got to look at the last two
- 24:21Speaker 2: games differently. He's been okay production-wise, but he hasn't been great.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Only thrown one touchdown pass. One game he had 147 yards.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Another game he had 339. And look at his completions percentage.
- 24:37Speaker 2: All over the map, my friend.
- 24:39Speaker 3: 89, 65, 55, 76, 50, 56. That's not going to
- 24:48Speaker 3: pay the bulldog, as my grandfather used to say.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Feed the bulldog. You can't go in the NFL in
- 24:54Speaker 2: a game with 50% completion rate. The young man has
- 24:58Speaker 2: the skills and the arm strength, but he needs this.
- 25:01Speaker 2: I hope he stays in college for himself.
- 25:05Speaker 1: I love it. I love it. Yeah, I'm going to
- 25:08Speaker 1: have to remember. If I ever get a bulldog, I'm
- 25:09Speaker 1: going to have to remember.
- 25:11Speaker 2: You got to feed him.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to keep feeding him. Yeah, I will
- 25:16Speaker 1: tell my baseball listeners I just did look up to
- 25:19Speaker 1: see if I could find any Austin Simmons baseball prospect stuff.
- 25:22Speaker 1: He does have a perfect game profile. Yeah, he did.
- 25:24Speaker 2: He threw a perfect game in high school or college.
- 25:28Speaker 1: They caught him throwing 87 when he was in high school.
- 25:31Speaker 1: That's pretty good.
- 25:32Speaker 2: He's a lefty.
- 25:33Speaker 1: He's a left-handed thrower. Oh, he's a lefty. Yeah, you
- 25:37Speaker 1: always worry about those lefties. All right. Yeah, so those
- 25:40Speaker 1: are a couple quarterbacks who climb the ring. Sounds like
- 25:42Speaker 1: Austin Simmons. Maybe give it a little while, but maybe
- 25:45Speaker 1: he'll get the Anthony Richardson Award for a guy who
- 25:47Speaker 1: gets pushed out after one exciting year.
- 25:49Speaker 2: You know what? I hope people around Austin Simmons understand
- 25:55Speaker 2: what happened to a man like Anthony Richardson. He's not
- 25:58Speaker 2: the only tale of one season and gone who's failed
- 26:02Speaker 2: at the NFL level. There's too many of those. And
- 26:06Speaker 2: especially now, my friend, the NIL changes everything. He can
- 26:11Speaker 2: get $ 2 million. learn it's like playing at triple a
- 26:16Speaker 2: at 19 right go to triple a learn the game
- 26:20Speaker 2: learn how to travel get better than at 20 you
- 26:23Speaker 2: go up to the major.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Leagues yeah so okay it's a little harder for me
- 26:28Speaker 1: to quarterbacks like quarterback drama of who's going up and
- 26:32Speaker 1: down the draft board is all over the place running
- 26:34Speaker 1: backs we all know are second class citizens on the
- 26:37Speaker 1: draft board there's usually there can be one jeremiah love
- 26:39Speaker 1: or washington and ashton and genti everybody else is We'll
- 26:42Speaker 1: worry about them later. For a fantasy football player, it's
- 26:45Speaker 1: just the opposite. Hollywood Smothers, I will tell you, is
- 26:48Speaker 1: a guy who I loved in our college league last year.
- 26:51Speaker 2: He was great last year.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Was it Virginia Tech? Wherever it was.
- 26:56Speaker 2: North Carolina State he played at.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Yeah, NC State. And I loved him. I was talking
- 27:02Speaker 1: him up and people were like, yeah, Jesse, that's not
- 27:04Speaker 1: the guy. But this year he transferred to Texas and
- 27:08Speaker 1: Hollywood has taken the bulk of carries and he is
- 27:12Speaker 1: balling there in Texas this year Hollywood Smothers what did
- 27:16Speaker 1: you what have you seen from him and is this
- 27:18Speaker 1: guy gonna play himself into a major NFL role you think.
- 27:22Speaker 2: So he's one of those players right now that the
- 27:25Speaker 2: NFL scouting complex likes more than I do I actually
- 27:30Speaker 2: thought he played better at North Carolina State than he
- 27:33Speaker 2: has at Texas but Texas has become it's a mess
- 27:38Speaker 2: this year right like The offensive line isn't playing well.
- 27:41Speaker 2: We're going to talk about Arch and his problems this year.
- 27:46Speaker 2: I did think Dylan Smothers played better for the Wolfpack.
- 27:50Speaker 2: What I liked about him at North Carolina State, he's
- 27:53Speaker 2: a good pass catcher. He had 44 targets as a Wolfpack,
- 27:58Speaker 2: 37 receptions and 189 yards last year. He was great
- 28:01Speaker 2: in PPR formats. He also had 939 yards rushing last
- 28:06Speaker 2: year at North Carolina State. Transfer is up for Texas.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I knew it was a little bit of a crowded
- 28:12Speaker 2: backfield at Texas, but I thought he might be the
- 28:15Speaker 2: best guy. They have Ray Lee Brown, who's really fallen off.
- 28:18Speaker 2: If you follow college football, hasn't lived up to what
- 28:21Speaker 2: we expected at the Longhorns. Excuse me. Smothers has been
- 28:28Speaker 2: good with 289 yards, but he's only averaging 4.4 yards
- 28:32Speaker 2: per carry. What I need to do is break down
- 28:35Speaker 2: the film. Do I think it smothers or is it
- 28:39Speaker 2: the offensive line? I don't want to mislead our listeners
- 28:44Speaker 2: by any stretch to tell you I've sat down and
- 28:47Speaker 2: looked at three or four games of tape to really
- 28:49Speaker 2: separate the running back from the offensive line. Last year,
- 28:54Speaker 2: I loved him. I thought he was a very interesting
- 28:56Speaker 2: NFL prospect. This year, I've not been as impressed. I'll
- 29:00Speaker 2: say this. When I have a running back, when I'm
- 29:03Speaker 2: watching games live, I call it the wow factor. And
- 29:08Speaker 2: watching Texas, I've never said, wow, he's an NFL bat.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Doesn't mean I've watched every snap. I've watched a lot
- 29:18Speaker 2: of arch this year. They've been on almost every weekend, right?
- 29:22Speaker 2: So I've seen a lot of Texas football and not
- 29:24Speaker 2: once have I said, wow. And that, to me right now,
- 29:29Speaker 2: is a concern.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Oh, shoot, yeah. It was fun at NC State. I
- 29:33Speaker 1: had some wows there.
- 29:35Speaker 2: I had some wow moments at NC State, my friend.
- 29:40Speaker 1: All right, let's go back a little bit to the
- 29:42Speaker 1: East and the SEC. Boy, most of this is SEC,
- 29:46Speaker 1: isn't it? Deshaun Bishop in Tennessee is third in power
- 29:50Speaker 1: for rushing yards per game. He is balling, and he
- 29:54Speaker 1: is one who is going to be He could graduate.
- 29:57Speaker 1: He could be part of the 2027 draft, I guess
- 29:59Speaker 1: is the point. So there's huge numbers there, and he's
- 30:03Speaker 1: playing at a big-time school, playing big-time defenses. I see
- 30:07Speaker 1: him maybe at least on the periphery of some of
- 30:09Speaker 1: the running back talk for the NFL draft. But tell
- 30:12Speaker 1: me about this guy. I really don't know much.
- 30:15Speaker 2: So I'm going to say this. There are wild moments
- 30:18Speaker 2: with Deshaun Bishop on film. And when I watched Tennessee
- 30:22Speaker 2: this year, I had him, I think I ranked him
- 30:24Speaker 2: third or fourth in college fantasy football. And I have
- 30:27Speaker 2: him on, you were talking about a Debbie team. I
- 30:29Speaker 2: have him on my Debbie team. I got him in
- 30:32Speaker 2: the third round of a draft because I thought he
- 30:34Speaker 2: was underrated. I really liked him. He has spectacular home
- 30:39Speaker 2: run hitting ability. However, is it the Josh Heupel system? Unfortunately, unfortunately,
- 30:49Speaker 2: we've seen these Tennessee running backs. How many of them
- 30:54Speaker 2: in the last six years have come out of Tennessee
- 30:57Speaker 2: and unfortunately they have not done anything at the NFL
- 31:01Speaker 2: level for fantasy football? I've got to break down the
- 31:05Speaker 2: film more. Is it because of these wide splits? And
- 31:09Speaker 2: I've gotten better. I've gotten better as I've watched more
- 31:12Speaker 2: and more film. Does Deshaun Bishop just have these classic
- 31:17Speaker 2: massive running lanes that the hypo offense creates? Are the
- 31:22Speaker 2: defensive backs just so far back because of the threat
- 31:25Speaker 2: of the wide receivers and those wide splits? Part of
- 31:30Speaker 2: me says yes, and I'm scared of that because sometimes
- 31:35Speaker 2: I do see Bishop run through the water split, right,
- 31:39Speaker 2: like most partying of the Red Sea, where you're like, oh,
- 31:43Speaker 2: my God, that is like they just blew that hole
- 31:46Speaker 2: wide open. So I've got to break down the film,
- 31:51Speaker 2: but there's also times where I'm like, this young man
- 31:54Speaker 2: is so good and so explosive, but can he run
- 31:59Speaker 2: efficiently between the tackles? And that's the key at the
- 32:04Speaker 2: NFL level. What is his vision between the tackles? I
- 32:08Speaker 2: think these Tennessee backs in the hypo system are, because
- 32:14Speaker 2: they have such wide splits and the running lanes are
- 32:18Speaker 2: so obvious, I wonder if they develop the vision necessary
- 32:23Speaker 2: to go through the A and the B gap at
- 32:26Speaker 2: the NFL level. And I think sometimes it's easy to
- 32:31Speaker 2: bounce the play outside because you know no one's out there.
- 32:38Speaker 2: They're chasing their wide receivers 30 yards down the field.
- 32:43Speaker 1: That ain't happening in the NFL, my friend. You're not
- 32:46Speaker 1: bouncing outside.
- 32:48Speaker 2: And we discussed the wide splits in the college game.
- 32:53Speaker 2: If he's on the right split and they're running wide
- 32:57Speaker 2: to the other side of the field and they're running
- 33:02Speaker 2: their wide receivers on deep posts, there's just massive lanes
- 33:07Speaker 2: out there. That doesn't happen in the NFL. So I
- 33:11Speaker 2: love him. I have a second round grade, but I
- 33:15Speaker 2: got to break down the film. Is it Heupel's system
- 33:19Speaker 2: or is Deshaun Bishop an actual legitimate NFL back who
- 33:24Speaker 2: just went to Tennessee?
- 33:27Speaker 1: Man, Josh Heupel, whenever I watch him on the sidelines,
- 33:30Speaker 1: it's like, This guy seems like the guy who you
- 33:33Speaker 1: went to high school with, who's put on a hundred pounds.
- 33:36Speaker 1: And just as this guy finished runner up for Heisman.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:39Speaker 1: He finished ahead of Drew Brees and LaDainian Tomlinson.
- 33:43Speaker 2: And did he win the national championship? Oklahoma. Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:48Speaker 1: So next time, put some respect on Josh Heifel's name.
- 33:51Speaker 1: He runs an offense, and he did ball out once
- 33:54Speaker 1: upon a time.
- 33:55Speaker 2: You know what's funny? I have UConn season tickets, and
- 33:58Speaker 2: it's about eight buddies and I all went to high
- 34:01Speaker 2: school or college. And I'm telling you, Josh Heupel looks
- 34:04Speaker 2: like half the guys I go hang out with on
- 34:07Speaker 2: the weekends tailgating. Yes, exactly. Exactly.
- 34:12Speaker 1: But he knows what he's doing, guys. He knows ball.
- 34:15Speaker 1: All right, the last one. Speaking of old-time guys who
- 34:18Speaker 1: make us feel like they know ball, every time I
- 34:21Speaker 1: hear Deuce Alexander, wide receiver out of Ole Miss, I swear, John,
- 34:25Speaker 1: it was this week when I finally stopped looking at
- 34:28Speaker 1: that and said, Deuce McAllister?
- 34:30Speaker 2: Deuce McAllister is back? How come it was Deuce McAllister
- 34:33Speaker 2: on the set of Ole Miss Mississippi?
- 34:36Speaker 1: I loved him, and I was like, Deuce, he was
- 34:39Speaker 1: in New Orleans, so maybe this is his kid. And
- 34:41Speaker 1: then I was like, no, you don't pass on your
- 34:42Speaker 1: first name to your kid. You pass on the last one.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Yeah. Deuce McAllister is one of those underrated only fantasy
- 34:49Speaker 2: footballs or Saints fans know how good Deuce McAllister was.
- 34:54Speaker 2: He was a good player.
- 34:56Speaker 1: I would draft him now if he showed up on
- 34:59Speaker 1: my database. And then his name was Deuce and his
- 35:02Speaker 1: number was 22. That was the best. That's the greatest. Anyway,
- 35:07Speaker 1: Deuce McAllister, no relation. So far as we know, wide
- 35:11Speaker 1: receiver at Ole Miss. He has had himself a pretty
- 35:14Speaker 1: nice year. He's filled in that gap. He's getting Trinidad
- 35:17Speaker 1: Chambliss's passes and he does seem to be on the
- 35:21Speaker 1: NFL draft list one of them who I probably a
- 35:24Speaker 1: lot of the top wide receivers are still kind of
- 35:26Speaker 1: chalked from the preseason it seems like but McAllister maybe
- 35:29Speaker 1: is kind of making his way up into that territory
- 35:31Speaker 1: what can you tell me about.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Him I think he's a top 10 guy I have
- 35:35Speaker 2: a third round grade on him right now what concerns
- 35:39Speaker 2: me a little bit he's a little bit of a
- 35:41Speaker 2: late bloomer if you don't know he played two years
- 35:44Speaker 2: at Wake Forest He was okay at Wake Forest, but
- 35:47Speaker 2: that was his freshman and sophomore year. Then he transfers
- 35:50Speaker 2: to Ole Miss. He had a nice season last year
- 35:54Speaker 2: with Ole Miss, but they had some decent receivers. That
- 35:57Speaker 2: wide receiver room was a little bit loaded, but he
- 36:01Speaker 2: ended up with 44 receptions for 684 yards, but only
- 36:06Speaker 2: two touchdowns. This year, he's clearly a huge difference maker.
- 36:11Speaker 2: He's the key guy in the Rebels passing game for
- 36:13Speaker 2: Trinidad Chambliss. He has 35 receptions, 523 yards, and five touchdowns.
- 36:20Speaker 2: I think he's going to be a day three guy.
- 36:23Speaker 2: I don't think he makes it into day two, but
- 36:25Speaker 2: you never know. Hey, I'll say this. I haven't looked
- 36:28Speaker 2: up his athleticism. I like what he's done on tape.
- 36:31Speaker 2: I like his hands. I like his toughness. When I
- 36:35Speaker 2: said that Trinidad Chambliss has the chutzpah, he's usually thrown
- 36:39Speaker 2: it into a very tight window with Hilton Alexander, and
- 36:42Speaker 2: he's making the catch. I like that. What is his
- 36:45Speaker 2: final athleticism that's going to matter on a young man
- 36:49Speaker 2: like him? But I have a day three grade on
- 36:53Speaker 2: him because he didn't pop immediately, and he's playing with
- 36:58Speaker 2: a really good NFL quarterback prospect, which helps a wide
- 37:02Speaker 2: receiver tremendously.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, for sure. Okay, John, let's take a
- 37:07Speaker 1: quick break, come back, and talk about a couple fallers. John,
- 37:24Speaker 1: we're back, and we've waited long enough. We've already teased
- 37:28Speaker 1: the Texas slide. I can't think of anybody who's going
- 37:32Speaker 1: to have more post-hype sleeper possibility than Arch Manning. Because
- 37:39Speaker 1: he's already tantalized and disappointed people for, has it been
- 37:42Speaker 1: four years now?
- 37:44Speaker 2: It's just been crazy.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Arch Manning is driving us nuts. Used to be, this
- 37:49Speaker 1: guy was going to go number one in the draft.
- 37:51Speaker 1: He was the chosen one. And now, is he even
- 37:53Speaker 1: going to stay the quarterback in Texas? What do you
- 37:55Speaker 1: make of Arch Manning?
- 37:57Speaker 2: I am, I'm as perplexed as I ever have been
- 38:02Speaker 2: by a quarterback prospect. He had a good season last year.
- 38:08Speaker 2: He was a third-year player or a junior. He definitely
- 38:12Speaker 2: knew Starkeesian's offense. He steps on the field. He was
- 38:17Speaker 2: good last year. He wasn't perfect, but considering it was
- 38:21Speaker 2: his first year behind center and that you would assume
- 38:25Speaker 2: a normal level of growth, right, that a young man
- 38:28Speaker 2: is going to develop, especially at the quarterback position. Then
- 38:33Speaker 2: Texas brings in Cam Coleman. They bring in offensive playmakers
- 38:39Speaker 2: like Hollywood Smothers. You look at the depth chart and
- 38:42Speaker 2: the talent. I thought it was all there. I can't
- 38:45Speaker 2: remember being this wrong on NFL quarterback and quarterback prospect.
- 38:52Speaker 2: I sat down and I said, you know what? Last
- 38:55Speaker 2: week was a great matchup against Florida. They're coming off
- 38:59Speaker 2: a loss. They're at home. The Gators are not good
- 39:03Speaker 2: on the back end. He can be productive in this
- 39:06Speaker 2: game against Florida. He was awful. I have nothing to say,
- 39:12Speaker 2: but he looked awful. I was okay with him missing
- 39:17Speaker 2: one or two throws last year. This year, he's missing
- 39:22Speaker 2: four throws, five throws a game, two. Why did he
- 39:27Speaker 2: stop running? Last year, he had 10 rushing touchdowns, and
- 39:31Speaker 2: I think he had over 400 yards rushing. He's not running.
- 39:36Speaker 2: I don't understand. I literally don't have an answer for
- 39:40Speaker 2: is it mental makeup? Is it Sark calling bad plays?
- 39:46Speaker 2: Is he lost his confidence? I literally... This is mind-blowing
- 39:52Speaker 2: to me what has happened to Arch Manning on the field.
- 39:54Speaker 2: He was absolutely terrible last week against the Gators.
- 39:59Speaker 1: It's such a puzzle.
- 40:02Speaker 2: It is a puzzle. No one knows the answer.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. Let's talk about
- 40:07Speaker 1: other quarterbacks who have started to lose confidence a little bit.
- 40:11Speaker 1: Dante Moore at Oregon, I also thought, was supposed to
- 40:14Speaker 1: be one of the top couple of guys. Now he's...
- 40:18Speaker 1: gone from mocked in the top five, maybe in the
- 40:20Speaker 1: NFL draft next year, to being honorable mentions at the
- 40:23Speaker 1: top of this quarterback class. In fact, he decided to
- 40:27Speaker 1: go back to school last year. I'm not sure what
- 40:29Speaker 1: the word is for this year. I think what Julian
- 40:31Speaker 1: Sainz said, he's going back to school. So we're not
- 40:33Speaker 1: covering him today.
- 40:34Speaker 2: Plus he's hurt.
- 40:35Speaker 1: But Dante Moore has fallen out of it. What's going
- 40:37Speaker 1: on with Dante Moore?
- 40:39Speaker 2: It's hard to discount the injury to what's happening in
- 40:42Speaker 2: his draft stock. But even before the injuries, I was
- 40:47Speaker 2: not overly impressed. So what I've been trying to think about,
- 40:51Speaker 2: now we know Oregon isn't as good as we thought.
- 40:54Speaker 2: So that's a big difference, right? So was the drop
- 40:59Speaker 2: off in early season production, was it because the team
- 41:04Speaker 2: wasn't as good or was it because Dante Moore wasn't
- 41:08Speaker 2: as good? His numbers aren't as bad as you would think,
- 41:13Speaker 2: even though they're not overly impressive. It might have been
- 41:15Speaker 2: expectations versus reality, right? Some of that happens. Our expectations
- 41:20Speaker 2: were so high that it's hard for any young man
- 41:23Speaker 2: to hit that level of excellence. But now I look
- 41:28Speaker 2: at the Ducks and how much worse are they without him?
- 41:33Speaker 2: Starting to think they are much worse without him. that
- 41:37Speaker 2: they're in bad shape right now, the Ducks. And this
- 41:40Speaker 2: is shocking as someone who watches a lot of college football.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Oregon was a top five program entering the season. Dante
- 41:48Speaker 2: Moore was at the top of the board. I'll say this.
- 41:52Speaker 2: I think Dante Moore should return to college for one
- 41:54Speaker 2: more season. I think he's making a mistake going to
- 41:59Speaker 2: the pros. I thought he made a right decision coming back.
- 42:03Speaker 2: But I thought at the end this would be He'd
- 42:06Speaker 2: have about 28 to 30 starts in him, depending on playoffs,
- 42:10Speaker 2: stuff like that. And he would probably lead the Ducks
- 42:14Speaker 2: to the playoffs again. That's not apparently going to happen
- 42:18Speaker 2: right now. He needs the experience. And I think Julian
- 42:24Speaker 2: Sainz is making the right decision going back. I think
- 42:27Speaker 2: Dante Moore should go back for one more season with
- 42:29Speaker 2: the Ducks. I think his draft, unless the industrial scouting
- 42:33Speaker 2: complex just looks around, they think these guys are falling off, right?
- 42:36Speaker 2: And what if Drew Messmaker returns, right? Then it might
- 42:40Speaker 2: just be like there's literally no one coming out. So
- 42:44Speaker 2: he might end up being a high draft pick by
- 42:47Speaker 2: literally default, not based on what he earned. I love
- 42:52Speaker 2: the arm strength. But I do think he would benefit
- 42:56Speaker 2: from being in college football with more experience.
- 43:00Speaker 1: We've seen that in the past. There was the year,
- 43:03Speaker 1: the Malik Willis year, that there was just so little
- 43:06Speaker 1: that quarterbacks dropped entirely out of the first round.
- 43:09Speaker 2: It happens.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Yeah. But then there's also the years where they just
- 43:15Speaker 1: will Kenny Pickett into that first round. It's just got
- 43:18Speaker 1: to be done.
- 43:18Speaker 2: And that didn't work out at all. That was a disaster.
- 43:22Speaker 1: No, and this was supposed to be a historic class.
- 43:25Speaker 1: So it's very confusing.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Anyone? I was thinking about this. If you were trading
- 43:33Speaker 2: in a super flex dynasty league for this quarterback class,
- 43:37Speaker 2: you literally are crying in your sleep right now because
- 43:42Speaker 2: it is looking so bad. And we haven't talked about
- 43:47Speaker 2: I'll make Jeremiah Smith should be the number one pick
- 43:50Speaker 2: in super flex leagues right now. I'm sorry.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Mel Kuyper just mocked him as number one in the
- 43:56Speaker 1: NFL draft.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Hey, I think you can make that. I haven't looked
- 43:59Speaker 2: at Colin Simmons, a Texas linebacker, edge rusher, and I'm
- 44:03Speaker 2: always a big edge rusher guy. If you get that
- 44:08Speaker 2: 15 sack edge rusher, that is almost one of the
- 44:11Speaker 2: gold positions in the NFL. I know Simmons is getting
- 44:15Speaker 2: a lot of press. I haven't broken him down to
- 44:17Speaker 2: say this is the guy, but right now it would
- 44:20Speaker 2: be in my book. It's between Jeremiah Smith and Colin Simmons.
- 44:24Speaker 2: That's it.
- 44:25Speaker 1: That's crazy. Who's the last number one?
- 44:28Speaker 2: Megatron?
- 44:28Speaker 1: Who was the last number one wide receiver picked in
- 44:31Speaker 1: the draft?
- 44:31Speaker 2: So I remember Urban Fryer, New England Patriots. No, but
- 44:36Speaker 2: I think Calvin Johnson was the number one overall.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Son of a gun. Yeah, I don't even remember. Somehow
- 44:42Speaker 1: I thought Calvin was, but all right.
- 44:44Speaker 2: So I thought he was like three.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you're probably right. All right. I'll have
- 44:49Speaker 1: the answer to that by the end of this episode, John.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Okay.
- 44:52Speaker 1: But in the meantime, the next quarterback, the way that
- 44:56Speaker 1: you could have made a fortune in fantasy was by
- 44:59Speaker 1: arbitrage on these quarterbacks. If you kept acquiring them and
- 45:01Speaker 1: then flipping them.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:03Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure that Lenora sellers of South Carolina, I
- 45:07Speaker 1: drafted him as a Debbie in a couple of leagues.
- 45:09Speaker 1: And now he might not even be the starter at
- 45:11Speaker 1: South Carolina anymore. The physical traits are there. South Carolina
- 45:15Speaker 1: has got some good things going for him. It seemed like,
- 45:17Speaker 1: but I don't know, man, what's going on with Lenora.
- 45:20Speaker 1: How can my boy be about ready to lose his gig?
- 45:23Speaker 1: I'm going to go back to my old grandmother's quote.
- 45:26Speaker 1: We put the cart before the horse with Lenora sellers.
- 45:31Speaker 2: The quarterback position is complex. We love the athletic skills.
- 45:36Speaker 2: There's no question about the physical traits. The arm strength
- 45:40Speaker 2: was there. The athletic ability was there. But I think
- 45:44Speaker 2: the nuances of playing the quarterback position weren't there. And
- 45:49Speaker 2: we pushed him too high up the board. I do
- 45:52Speaker 2: see improvement this year. He is getting better, my friend.
- 45:58Speaker 2: He's playing the quarterback position better. He has a better
- 46:03Speaker 2: offense coordinator in Art Bryles Jr. But unfortunately, the team
- 46:08Speaker 2: isn't this good this year. I have a third-round grade
- 46:12Speaker 2: on Lenore Sellers. I don't think he's there right now
- 46:16Speaker 2: as a first-round talent. It's a massive projection looking at
- 46:21Speaker 2: Lenore Sellers and saying he's going to be a star
- 46:24Speaker 2: at the NFL level. I think he's falling. I think
- 46:28Speaker 2: there will be a team, if he falls in the
- 46:30Speaker 2: second round, they will fall in love with his athletic
- 46:33Speaker 2: traits and they'll reach up for him. But I don't
- 46:37Speaker 2: know about the nuances of running an offense and taking
- 46:41Speaker 2: command and all the little things that make an NFL
- 46:45Speaker 2: quarterback so important.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's crazy times. All right. And by the way,
- 46:51Speaker 1: I don't quite understand because I thought there were two
- 46:54Speaker 1: years that quarterback didn't go number one, but I only
- 46:57Speaker 1: see one year out of the last nine years that
- 47:00Speaker 1: a quarterback was not the number one overall pick. So
- 47:02Speaker 1: one of these guys presumably is if he's not going
- 47:04Speaker 1: to be there, he's going to get close.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:07Speaker 1: But there's only in the history of the NFL draft.
- 47:11Speaker 1: There's only two wide receivers who went number one overall.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Irving Fryer is one of them. Who's the other Keyshawn Johnson, 1996.
- 47:19Speaker 1: I thought he was number two. Remember old Keyshawn?
- 47:25Speaker 2: Wow, Keyshawn. Yeah, he had the great Rose Bowl at
- 47:28Speaker 2: USC for the Trojans. He was an incredible. He doesn't
- 47:33Speaker 2: get college credit because his numbers, it was a different
- 47:36Speaker 2: game in the early 90s. But Keyshawn Johnson was an
- 47:40Speaker 2: incredible college-wide receiver. I didn't even play college fantasy football
- 47:46Speaker 2: back then. So, yeah, I guess that makes sense. Okay,
- 47:50Speaker 2: so Keyshawn to the Jets and Irvin Fryer to the Patriots.
- 47:54Speaker 1: That's right. All right. I'll be honest, John. Now my
- 47:57Speaker 1: list of fallers starts to fall off. I don't know
- 47:59Speaker 1: if there's anything to say about Ahmad Hardy, the running
- 48:02Speaker 1: back of Missouri, because he was supposed to be the
- 48:05Speaker 1: top running back in this draft, and then he got shot, right?
- 48:07Speaker 1: And his backup, Jamal Roberts, is balling out. So obviously
- 48:11Speaker 1: the environment was pretty good for him. I don't know, man.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Do you have any take.
- 48:15Speaker 2: On this guy? I hope the young man goes back
- 48:18Speaker 2: to Mizzou. Unfortunately, and I had gone on a podcast
- 48:22Speaker 2: over the summer and someone asked me, what are you
- 48:24Speaker 2: doing with Ahmad Hardy? Because I think he was, he
- 48:27Speaker 2: got hurt, shot, as you said, sometime around May. He
- 48:32Speaker 2: got shot in May, I believe. And I said, I'm
- 48:35Speaker 2: not drafting him. I can't, I'm not a doctor. You
- 48:39Speaker 2: can't believe anything these coaching staffs or the programs tell
- 48:43Speaker 2: you anymore about And I'm sorry, last I knew, a
- 48:47Speaker 2: bullet wound probably wasn't the best thing for a running
- 48:50Speaker 2: back in the leg. So I'm just not– I have
- 48:53Speaker 2: no shares of Ahmaud Hardy. And it wasn't because I
- 48:58Speaker 2: had any. I just didn't know. And if I don't
- 49:00Speaker 2: have an answer, I'm not embracing– I'm not taking the risk.
- 49:05Speaker 2: So now you have Jamal Roberts, and he's been a star.
- 49:08Speaker 2: So you have to say to yourself, a little bit
- 49:11Speaker 2: of the system– now, I like Jamal Roberts. But right,
- 49:15Speaker 2: obviously the system, and if you look, remember Cody Schrader
- 49:19Speaker 2: three years ago? at Mizzou, he had 1700 yards rushing
- 49:23Speaker 2: or something and 20 touchdowns in Eli Drinkowitz's system. The
- 49:30Speaker 2: system is Mizzou runs the football. He's been very good
- 49:34Speaker 2: Drinkowitz on coordinating a run game. I don't know if
- 49:38Speaker 2: Jamal Roberts is a high level NFL back, but I
- 49:42Speaker 2: think Ahmad Hardy needs to return. I basically have him
- 49:45Speaker 2: off the board. I don't see why he would go
- 49:47Speaker 2: to the NFL or why you would risk it right
- 49:49Speaker 2: now as an NFL organization.
- 49:52Speaker 1: And, and honestly, John, I'm, I think that the next
- 49:55Speaker 1: couple of guys I put down were dumb on the
- 49:57Speaker 1: sheet that I first provided you because I said we
- 49:59Speaker 1: weren't going to cover Mark Fletcher because he was really high,
- 50:02Speaker 1: and then I put him here somehow. Although I will
- 50:05Speaker 1: say for an undefeated Miami team, as we sit here,
- 50:08Speaker 1: my current school, the Pitt Panthers, are playing Miami today.
- 50:12Speaker 1: You never know. But he has not produced like he
- 50:17Speaker 1: did last year. He's on an undefeated team that's balling out,
- 50:20Speaker 1: but he's only 56th in FBS history. in rushing yards
- 50:24Speaker 1: a game, which is a little less than one might
- 50:26Speaker 1: think to see from the top running back or top
- 50:29Speaker 1: couple running backs on the board, but the Mocs are
- 50:31Speaker 1: still putting them up there. I don't know. Any concern
- 50:33Speaker 1: about Mark Fletcher at this point, John?
- 50:37Speaker 2: There is a lot of concern. Okay. I like to
- 50:40Speaker 2: see wiggle, and it can be a little bit subjective wiggle.
- 50:47Speaker 2: I don't see a lot of wiggle between the tackles.
- 50:50Speaker 2: I see your classic one gap pounder who wants to
- 50:55Speaker 2: hit the hole and maybe run over someone. And then
- 50:59Speaker 2: like I was watching Dylan Riley, if you haven't seen
- 51:02Speaker 2: him at Boise State. And I'm debating where I like
- 51:06Speaker 2: how I rank him and what. But he's an incredible
- 51:09Speaker 2: college running back. But Dylan Riley has that wiggle. He
- 51:14Speaker 2: gets through the hole and then, so not only does
- 51:16Speaker 2: he find the small crease, but he knows which hole
- 51:19Speaker 2: to go to so he has good vision. But then
- 51:21Speaker 2: he has that wiggle where he makes a jump cut
- 51:23Speaker 2: after the linebacker and he just blows by his secondary guy.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Mark Fletcher doesn't have that. He wants to crash into
- 51:31Speaker 2: the safety. He wants to run over the linebacker. It
- 51:36Speaker 2: just isn't, that doesn't work for long-term NFL success. You
- 51:40Speaker 2: could be a short yardage specialist. maybe a goal line specialist,
- 51:45Speaker 2: but I don't think he's that big. He's big, but
- 51:48Speaker 2: he's not like, oh my God, big. So I just,
- 51:50Speaker 2: I think he's fallen a lot. And if he was
- 51:52Speaker 2: that good, why does Miami not use him more? There's just,
- 51:57Speaker 2: there's just a lot of questions.
- 51:59Speaker 1: They keep winning. But you usually think if a team
- 52:02Speaker 1: is blowing out their competition, which Miami has all but
- 52:05Speaker 1: one week so far, that you would use the running
- 52:08Speaker 1: back more to solve the game at the end. And
- 52:11Speaker 1: that doesn't seem to be what they're doing anyway. Yeah,
- 52:14Speaker 1: it's not so great. But yeah, so I don't know.
- 52:17Speaker 1: At this point, John, is there anybody else you think
- 52:19Speaker 1: that we maybe haven't mentioned? who really strikes out as
- 52:22Speaker 1: something either as a riser or follow that people ought
- 52:25Speaker 1: to know about?
- 52:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll give you some. How about some at every position?
- 52:29Speaker 2: If you haven't watched KJ Duff, wide receiver at Rutgers, everyone,
- 52:34Speaker 2: he's a legitimate NFL wide receiver. I believe he's going
- 52:38Speaker 2: to– I have a second-round grade because I'm a little
- 52:40Speaker 2: worried about separation, but the hands, the speed, and the
- 52:44Speaker 2: size are all there. Absolutely love KJ Duff out of Rutgers.
- 52:50Speaker 2: He's an amazing– wide receiver. At running back, we have
- 52:54Speaker 2: one of the biggest risers. Now, it'll be interesting to
- 52:57Speaker 2: see if he comes out this year. I'm not sure
- 53:00Speaker 2: how it actually falls, like on how it's hard to
- 53:03Speaker 2: figure out three years out, all that. I do like
- 53:07Speaker 2: Nate Shepard at Duke. He's much better than people think
- 53:10Speaker 2: he is. And I did mention, I hinted at Dylan Riley. Everyone,
- 53:16Speaker 2: if you want to see a back who really is spectacular,
- 53:21Speaker 2: Watch Dylan Riley. Will it translate to the NFL level?
- 53:25Speaker 2: I'm a little concerned about his size. I think he's
- 53:27Speaker 2: a little undersized. But man, does he have the speed,
- 53:33Speaker 2: the jump cuts, the vision, and the home run ability.
- 53:37Speaker 2: I love Dylan Riley at Boise State. So you got
- 53:39Speaker 2: to get your eyeballs on Nate Shepard and Dylan Riley.
- 53:43Speaker 2: I think those are both unbelievable. And my friend, I
- 53:47Speaker 2: literally think the quarterback position is falling off the face
- 53:50Speaker 2: of the earth. Right now, if you're telling me Darian
- 53:54Speaker 2: Ments is a top five pick in the NFL draft,
- 53:56Speaker 2: there's no question in my mind. Yeah. Quarterback, you look
- 54:00Speaker 2: at what we got at the quarterback position, you're looking
- 54:03Speaker 2: around and you're like, man, there's something I don't like
- 54:07Speaker 2: about everyone. How many are going to go back to
- 54:10Speaker 2: the pros, right? That's going to be how many are
- 54:13Speaker 2: going to decide to go back. Josh Hoover out of Indiana,
- 54:18Speaker 2: he might be pushed up the boards. I wonder about him,
- 54:22Speaker 2: but the quarterback position has fallen off a cliff very fast.
- 54:28Speaker 2: So Mensah's the guy, but Josh Hoover's interesting at Indiana.
- 54:33Speaker 1: My skepticism about the Miami quarterback, how can you have
- 54:37Speaker 1: a quarterback named Mensah? Isn't that a little on the nose?
- 54:40Speaker 1: You're supposed to be smart anyway. John, this has been
- 54:44Speaker 1: a wonderful take. You are following college closely. There's way
- 54:48Speaker 1: too many teams. Thank goodness you are because it's.
- 54:51Speaker 2: So hard for anybody else to.
- 54:53Speaker 1: But how can people follow the work that you're doing
- 54:55Speaker 1: on College Fantasy Football? I don't know if there's draft coverage,
- 54:58Speaker 1: probably a little bit further down the road, but how
- 55:00Speaker 1: can people follow you?
- 55:01Speaker 2: I write an article every week for fan tracks on
- 55:04Speaker 2: the college fantasy football waiver wire, but there are guys
- 55:07Speaker 2: in there who might end up being drafted and you
- 55:10Speaker 2: might want to know, especially a player at a power
- 55:13Speaker 2: four program. So you could check out all that every week.
- 55:16Speaker 2: If you just want a better landscape of the players
- 55:19Speaker 2: in college football, that'll help you there also, but follow
