- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the almost famous podcast with iHeartRadio. We're back
- 0:05Speaker 1: almost famous to OG's and we are having such a
- 0:07Speaker 1: great time with Jamie Blythe, who was, of course my
- 0:11Speaker 1: partner in crime on Trista's season of the Bachelorette. So
- 0:13Speaker 1: let's get back into it.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I just want to take this opportunity to say, I
- 0:18Speaker 2: am so sorry. I wish I would have like going
- 0:21Speaker 2: back the things that I like said, you know, like
- 0:25Speaker 2: oh yeah, oh, And our producer said that in an article.
- 0:30Speaker 3: She said that at one point in the show.
- 0:35Speaker 2: And I don't know if you remember this, Jamie, because
- 0:37Speaker 2: I don't remember it. My memory sucks, so anyway, I
- 0:42Speaker 2: don't remember it. But it's said in the article that
- 0:44Speaker 2: you called me Tricia and then you said do you
- 0:48Speaker 2: like golf? And I was like, my name is Trista,
- 0:51Speaker 2: and no, I don't like golf.
- 0:52Speaker 4: I remember that story.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I remember thinking, I thought said I might eve even
- 0:58Speaker 1: said something to the effect of I felt like you
- 1:01Speaker 1: might like he might have followed he up with I mean,
- 1:03Speaker 1: I I really like, you know, I really liked the
- 1:05Speaker 1: time we're spending together, like yeah, you like it's so
- 1:06Speaker 1: much of collinor Tricia or something like. I was just
- 1:09Speaker 1: just you know.
- 1:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I had a good friend at home named Tricia,
- 1:13Speaker 5: and we were in a line. Bob was righting back
- 1:15Speaker 5: at me. Yeah, I go, Tricia, do you like golf?
- 1:18Speaker 5: And then Bob, you just lost it. I remember that
- 1:20Speaker 5: you just died left. But you uh completely, Bob. You
- 1:25Speaker 5: saved me though, because that whole thing would have been
- 1:28Speaker 5: so different for me, but especially just going at like
- 1:31Speaker 5: that first encounter with that guy and all of a sudden,
- 1:33Speaker 5: I'm laughing and I'm like, call, like how I could
- 1:36Speaker 5: actually sit here and have fun despite all the anxiety,
- 1:41Speaker 5: and not only that, like I talked to you about it,
- 1:44Speaker 5: like you were telling me some of your things that
- 1:46Speaker 5: happened to you at that time. And I think we
- 1:50Speaker 5: were I was on the top of the Uh didn't
- 1:52Speaker 5: we go on the top of that mansion we were at,
- 1:54Speaker 5: and we're like, Trista came home from a date at
- 1:56Speaker 5: like four am with Ryan, a nice date, and me
- 1:59Speaker 5: and you were hammered on the top of a mansion,
- 2:01Speaker 5: cooking like burd.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Oh, we were sweeping beer cans off of the off
- 2:06Speaker 1: of the roof. And actually, no, she wasn't on a
- 2:10Speaker 1: date with Ryan because Ryan was there with us actually,
- 2:13Speaker 1: and I remember the roof, No, not on top of
- 2:16Speaker 1: the roof, but he was there at the house with
- 2:17Speaker 1: us still, and we had played the Sentry Club that night,
- 2:20Speaker 1: a hundred shots of beer in a hundred minutes, and
- 2:24Speaker 1: it was just something dumb we were doing. And that's
- 2:27Speaker 1: the night Jamie did the pony chowl thing. It was
- 2:29Speaker 1: eating dog food and it was just crazy. But I
- 2:32Speaker 1: remember you came home and you came in and you
- 2:35Speaker 1: you were laughing, and so I knew the producers put
- 2:38Speaker 1: you up to it, but you like had to look
- 2:39Speaker 1: like you were mad. And you go, why is it
- 2:41Speaker 1: when I go on a date with you, I come
- 2:44Speaker 1: back and everyone's sleeping or reading the Bible, and I
- 2:47Speaker 1: go on a date with anyone but you and I
- 2:49Speaker 1: come home and it's like a frat party. And I
- 2:52Speaker 1: remember you said it with this gleam in your eye.
- 2:54Speaker 1: This one I knew we were going to be friends forever.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I swear to you, trist I did. And I looked
- 2:58Speaker 1: at you and I go, well, with all respect, you
- 3:00Speaker 1: are dating fourteen of my new best friends. Every we
- 3:04Speaker 1: both just started laughing and it was like one of
- 3:06Speaker 1: those moments.
- 3:07Speaker 4: So funny.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Oh what am I supposed to do, you know, like
- 3:11Speaker 1: it was like it is so funny and dumb and hilarious.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Well that's the night Jack Jack French. Yeah, ironically, the
- 3:20Speaker 5: people like he didn't He didn't, you know, drink very much,
- 3:22Speaker 5: and so as the people that here was my takeaway.
- 3:27Speaker 5: The people that didn't like drink at all looked like
- 3:31Speaker 5: the alcoholics.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah, they passed out. We're like out there, still working,
- 3:36Speaker 1: We're functioning beautiful.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Because it was like eight pm and I could just
- 3:40Speaker 5: tell he was slowing his words. And I went up
- 3:42Speaker 5: to him and his bed was right next to mine
- 3:44Speaker 5: with like the seventy five other guys vying for the
- 3:48Speaker 5: Trista's heart, and they go, Jack, you need to I'm like,
- 3:53Speaker 5: come over here, away from the cameras and like you
- 3:54Speaker 5: need to go to bed, and he's like okay, So I.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Dragged him there.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Did you sell him out? Later?
- 4:00Speaker 4: Did I totally screwed him?
- 4:03Speaker 1: He's like he's passed out.
- 4:04Speaker 5: But he's like standing on his bed and the guy
- 4:07Speaker 5: looks like a Vander Holyfield naked pean on his bed,
- 4:11Speaker 5: And of course I got to come tell you, oh
- 4:13Speaker 5: my god, I can believe.
- 4:14Speaker 4: This dumb peeing on his bed right now.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I'm like, no, let's go. Then then we carried him out.
- 4:23Speaker 1: We carry his bed outside while he's sleeping at it,
- 4:26Speaker 1: we carry him outside. The sprinklers come on.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Amazing little frat boys, My little frat boys.
- 4:32Speaker 4: So good.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Okay, So tell us about how is life now? You know,
- 4:37Speaker 2: after after the Bachelorette you go back to normal life,
- 4:42Speaker 2: and obviously you have a happy family and we so
- 4:45Speaker 2: we would love to hear about it, because I don't
- 4:47Speaker 2: think you're on social that much.
- 4:50Speaker 5: No, So I was basically after that, I did some
- 4:53Speaker 5: stuff for ABC, NBC and Chicago briefly and then not
- 4:58Speaker 5: even briefly. I did it on and off for years
- 4:59Speaker 5: and an extra when subbrities came through Chicago, I was
- 5:03Speaker 5: the guy that kind of interviewed all the celebrities. So
- 5:05Speaker 5: I interviewed everybody, I mean, Trump, Lebron James, al Pacino,
- 5:10Speaker 5: you know, Scarlet, everybody that came through Chicago. I interviewed
- 5:13Speaker 5: all of them, so that you know that was I
- 5:16Speaker 5: enjoyed doing that, but I was really living kind of
- 5:18Speaker 5: a regular life. I remember having some people say move
- 5:22Speaker 5: to La some agents and stuff like that, and I
- 5:26Speaker 5: actually had my car packed at one point, and it's
- 5:29Speaker 5: just something in my gut just didn't sit right with me.
- 5:31Speaker 5: So I went back to sort of a normal life.
- 5:34Speaker 5: But I've got a eleven year old boy who is
- 5:36Speaker 5: the best, best kid in the world. I don't know
- 5:39Speaker 5: if you guys can see this or not.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Look at that? Can you see a guy? Look at
- 5:42Speaker 1: those eyes? That crazy?
- 5:45Speaker 4: He's a looker, beautiful.
- 5:47Speaker 5: But his name is Jackson. He's the best, great athlete,
- 5:50Speaker 5: super smart. I just knocked over my high noon, Bob.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Something's never changed.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Now I'm screwed.
- 6:00Speaker 5: And then so I was, you know, living a normal life.
- 6:02Speaker 5: And then I'm trying to think. Probably five years ago,
- 6:05Speaker 5: a friend of mine, a good friend of mine, sold
- 6:08Speaker 5: his company for substantial amount of money. He was a
- 6:12Speaker 5: film major in college, wanted to make movies. I had
- 6:14Speaker 5: some contacts. He ends up meeting Mike Tyson. Of all people,
- 6:20Speaker 5: they really get along, and in my head, I was
- 6:23Speaker 5: going to do a documentary on anxiety, depression and just
- 6:26Speaker 5: mental health. And so he goes, well, hey, I interview Mike,
- 6:30Speaker 5: and then he had William Shatner, a couple of Navy seals,
- 6:34Speaker 5: and then I kind of got the rest of some
- 6:36Speaker 5: pro baseball players pro golfers, therapists, really.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Anybody that could help.
- 6:41Speaker 5: But but yeah, Mike Tyson was the first interview, and
- 6:46Speaker 5: that feeling was kind of like, it felt very similar
- 6:50Speaker 5: to go on that first night on The Bachelorette. It
- 6:52Speaker 5: was the same exact feeling. I didn't sleep for two
- 6:54Speaker 5: days and just outrageously nervous for it, even though I'd
- 6:59Speaker 5: been on camera lot. It's just it was intense for
- 7:02Speaker 5: me because I wasn't doing it every day type thing
- 7:05Speaker 5: where it was consistent where you get used to it.
- 7:07Speaker 5: And then Mike Tyson's sitting across from you.
- 7:10Speaker 4: But he was great.
- 7:11Speaker 1: That was a great interview too.
- 7:12Speaker 5: When you look at like today, you know, mental health, depression, anxiety, suicide,
- 7:17Speaker 5: and fortunately is at a boiling point, especially with the
- 7:20Speaker 5: young people the town I live in. I mean, there's
- 7:23Speaker 5: a horrible incident last week, but.
- 7:27Speaker 4: It's on the rise.
- 7:28Speaker 5: And I thought Mike Tyson gave probably one of the best,
- 7:31Speaker 5: it's simple, one of the best answers I've ever heard.
- 7:34Speaker 4: And I just asked him if you ever been suicidal?
- 7:36Speaker 5: And he's like all the time, He's like fifty different
- 7:39Speaker 5: times over the years, right, And that guy just keeps
- 7:42Speaker 5: getting back up, but his answer was, you know, it's
- 7:45Speaker 5: just a moment in time.
- 7:46Speaker 4: It'll pass. It's just a moment in time.
- 7:49Speaker 5: And I think, especially young people, we all do this
- 7:52Speaker 5: right where you think this is it, you go through
- 7:54Speaker 5: some crisis.
- 7:55Speaker 4: We all been there, Bob. I've been at your worst moments.
- 7:58Speaker 5: You've been in mind right, yeah, where you can't see
- 8:01Speaker 5: the future in a way and you're just kind of
- 8:03Speaker 5: down and out and we're fun guys, and we're fun,
- 8:06Speaker 5: but it's like that other side. You could be outgoing
- 8:10Speaker 5: and life of the party, but also struggle inside a
- 8:12Speaker 5: little bit, right, But everybody has these moments. Crisis is universal.
- 8:16Speaker 5: Being broken as universal, but just understanding that it's a
- 8:21Speaker 5: moment in time, it's right now, and if you could
- 8:24Speaker 5: just sort of zoom out and that this moment will
- 8:27Speaker 5: pass and not only pass, but you might look back
- 8:31Speaker 5: at your hardest times and say, yeah, you don't want
- 8:34Speaker 5: to go through that again. But maybe there was something
- 8:37Speaker 5: on the other side of that that did make you
- 8:39Speaker 5: stronger and maybe you realize something.
- 8:40Speaker 4: But I mean, do you agree with what I'm saying
- 8:42Speaker 4: a little bit about her?
- 8:43Speaker 1: Oh? Absolutely, man, I listen, I've said it forever about you.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I think, you know, one of the reasons we migrated
- 8:49Speaker 1: to each other was we kind of needed each other,
- 8:52Speaker 1: you know, on at that stage in our lives, and
- 8:54Speaker 1: thankfully have continued our friendship like for so many years
- 8:57Speaker 1: ever since then. But yeah, I've often said it. At first,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I don't think people would look at you and think
- 9:04Speaker 1: that you had this situation going on. And but I
- 9:08Speaker 1: also think it's because you've approached it in such a
- 9:10Speaker 1: way that you do. You are funny about it, and
- 9:13Speaker 1: you are lighthearted about it, and people root for you.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And I've always rooted for you, and I think that
- 9:19Speaker 1: it's one of those things you know, you see someone
- 9:20Speaker 1: you love and care about struggling and you're like, come on, man,
- 9:23Speaker 1: I know you can do this, you know, and you've
- 9:25Speaker 1: done harder things and crazier things, and and so you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: I mean, I've said it for Avertrice that I think,
- 9:32Speaker 1: you know, you set such a high bar for how
- 9:36Speaker 1: I think the people that are in that lead position
- 9:40Speaker 1: on the Bachelor and Bachelorette should be. And you were
- 9:42Speaker 1: so kind to all of us, you know, and it
- 9:44Speaker 1: was like you were so sweet and it's just your disposition,
- 9:46Speaker 1: it's just who you are, and and I think Jamie
- 9:50Speaker 1: in particular was able to I was able to be
- 9:53Speaker 1: feel like I could be myself because you made me
- 9:55Speaker 1: feel that way. But Jamie also, I think he felt
- 9:58Speaker 1: so comfortable with you that that kind of took the
- 10:01Speaker 1: pressure off, Like you almost forgot you're on a TV
- 10:03Speaker 1: show because you're talking to this beautiful person who's really
- 10:05Speaker 1: sweet and kind and and you know, Trista.
- 10:08Speaker 5: That goes back to back to what you were saying,
- 10:10Speaker 5: where I thought you were great. You didn't I hit
- 10:14Speaker 5: it from everybody.
- 10:14Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 10:15Speaker 5: It's not like I told you I had this and
- 10:17Speaker 5: you didn't do anything that was You were really nice
- 10:19Speaker 5: to me, So yeah, I never said anything negative and
- 10:22Speaker 5: I thought you were I thought you were great, Bob.
- 10:25Speaker 4: I think it was funny.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Where I can't remember when I first talked about it
- 10:28Speaker 5: was either when Chris Harrison had that live show or
- 10:30Speaker 5: me and you went on Diane Sawyer.
- 10:33Speaker 4: I think it might have been Diane Sawyer.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I think it was.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Yeah, So that was.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Weird for me because that was live TV, and I
- 10:38Speaker 5: remember me and you kind of we went out for
- 10:41Speaker 5: really late that night before and then it was which
- 10:44Speaker 5: probably helped.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Honestly, shocking amazing, amazing, the two of us get together.
- 10:49Speaker 1: It still happens now.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Then what's weird about that is she gave the commencement
- 10:54Speaker 5: speech at my at Illinois for my graduation, and that's
- 10:58Speaker 5: why I was. I was at my worst though when
- 11:01Speaker 5: she gave it and everybody else is seeing in the future,
- 11:05Speaker 5: I was at my worst. I was like, God, now
- 11:06Speaker 5: I got to go in the real world with this
- 11:08Speaker 5: thing that I'm hiding and I can't deal with. And
- 11:10Speaker 5: there's people everywhere obviously, So when me and you, I
- 11:12Speaker 5: don't know if you remember this, but I sat there
- 11:14Speaker 5: and I told her in that brief story and then
- 11:16Speaker 5: that's kind of what she wanted to talk about.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I actually do. Yeah, I do remember that.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Yeah, it was wild.
- 11:21Speaker 1: It was great. I thought it was amazing. You confronted
- 11:23Speaker 1: your fears head on, buddy, and that's a that's a
- 11:25Speaker 1: hard thing to do.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Connie Chung was hilarious, though. Do you remember that what
- 11:28Speaker 4: a disaster I was on.
- 11:29Speaker 1: That you were? Yeah, that was really funny.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Bob talked for about twenty five minutes, like I didn't
- 11:34Speaker 5: say work, and then while we're on air, and this
- 11:38Speaker 5: is like during the Iraq worry and so there's like
- 11:41Speaker 5: all these monitors.
- 11:42Speaker 4: I was more.
- 11:42Speaker 5: Curious because Bob was. I actually loved it because Bob
- 11:44Speaker 5: was talking. So I was just staring at like over
- 11:47Speaker 5: here at the monitors. And then she goes, Jamie, what
- 11:52Speaker 5: do you think about that? I wasn't listening to any
- 11:54Speaker 5: of it, no idea. Oh and I just feel like this.
- 11:57Speaker 5: I go, what do you think about what? And you go, oh,
- 12:03Speaker 5: she's talking about the Iraq Warrior. You give your thoughts
- 12:06Speaker 5: on the Iraq working.
- 12:09Speaker 1: She was not talking about that the way.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Yeah, so fun, that like so fun.
- 12:13Speaker 5: We went through this whole experience together and you know,
- 12:17Speaker 5: all these fun stories and yeah, absolutely.
- 12:30Speaker 2: How do you think that you would have felt if
- 12:33Speaker 2: social media had been around you?
- 12:36Speaker 3: Would you have actually done the show?
- 12:39Speaker 5: That's a great point. I think there's pros and cons.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I think social media is it's really dangerous. You know,
- 12:46Speaker 5: I was an adult, but like say, for a teenager,
- 12:49Speaker 5: it's potentially dangerous, right is it? Like you could let's
- 12:52Speaker 5: say you're not part of the cool club on Facebook
- 12:54Speaker 5: or Instagram, and then your comparisons are a bad deal.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Well, I can't imagine that a therapist hasn't told you
- 13:02Speaker 2: to stay away from social media with you know, I
- 13:05Speaker 2: would assume in books and anything you read on panic
- 13:08Speaker 2: disorders that maybe social media.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Is not where you should be spending your time.
- 13:14Speaker 1: You know.
- 13:14Speaker 5: I think it's funny because I was never on Instagram
- 13:17Speaker 5: till I did this show.
- 13:19Speaker 4: My podcast, and it's funny. I actually like a lot
- 13:23Speaker 4: of it.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Like I think there's some very helpful stuff if you're
- 13:27Speaker 5: trying to deal with mental health. But yeah, I think
- 13:29Speaker 5: where it gets tricky. I think there's some really good
- 13:32Speaker 5: stuff on them. But and then the algorithm start working
- 13:35Speaker 5: out where if I'm hey, I'm trying to beat anxiety,
- 13:37Speaker 5: I'm trying to be depression and whatever it might be,
- 13:39Speaker 5: those'll start popping up. So that stuff I think is
- 13:41Speaker 5: pretty good. The trick is, like I said, the comparisons
- 13:46Speaker 5: and inequities. So you know, you're in high school or
- 13:51Speaker 5: let's say you do something stupid, which in high school
- 13:53Speaker 5: I did all the time.
- 13:55Speaker 4: It's like, all right, well that's on there.
- 13:58Speaker 5: And then you know, Bob and I probably a million
- 14:01Speaker 5: thoughts going through has right now with things we've done,
- 14:03Speaker 5: and like, well how do you live that?
- 14:05Speaker 4: Down?
- 14:05Speaker 5: Is their potential like fame there And I've heard stories
- 14:09Speaker 5: where somebody did just throw something on Facebook and.
- 14:12Speaker 4: It goes viral, and now that that person's dealing with
- 14:15Speaker 4: the shame.
- 14:15Speaker 5: So but I think the big problem is is that
- 14:18Speaker 5: and then just the comparisons and you know, everybody's putting
- 14:22Speaker 5: obviously that we've all heard this before, but obviously their
- 14:24Speaker 5: best filter whatever you want to call it, on there.
- 14:27Speaker 4: So I think that's the danger.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Yeah, right, Well, thank god we didn't have to deal
- 14:33Speaker 2: with that, and we had lots of fun. I mean,
- 14:35Speaker 2: our my season are I say our season because it
- 14:38Speaker 2: was our season even though it was my bachelorette, was
- 14:42Speaker 2: just so much fun. We had the best time, our
- 14:46Speaker 2: big guys, our group was so great.
- 14:49Speaker 3: We were so lucky.
- 14:51Speaker 5: You were awesome, You were you were great to all
- 14:53Speaker 5: of us. Super I thought you were handled a first
- 14:57Speaker 5: time thing extremely well. And like you said, that had
- 15:00Speaker 5: to be a lot of pressure. I mean, just being
- 15:03Speaker 5: the person in the first to do it, and like
- 15:07Speaker 5: and like you said, which I didn't quite know, but
- 15:10Speaker 5: the scrutiny and about you probably dealt with some of
- 15:12Speaker 5: that too, Like how was that just dealing with public scrutiny?
- 15:16Speaker 5: I guess, like how do you process it?
- 15:18Speaker 1: Oh?
- 15:18Speaker 2: I feel like I'd still do a really horrible job
- 15:22Speaker 2: of it.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I saw your Ted talk, though, I thought your Ted
- 15:24Speaker 4: Talk was great.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I feel like, for the most part, and you guys
- 15:29Speaker 2: probably have the same experience, is that ninety nine point
- 15:33Speaker 2: nine percent of people are so positive and so supportive,
- 15:36Speaker 2: and you know, big fans whoever come up and talk
- 15:40Speaker 2: to me. But then there's like, you know, that point
- 15:43Speaker 2: oh five percent that and I don't know what movie
- 15:48Speaker 2: it was in the eighties, but there's a movie in
- 15:50Speaker 2: the eighties that I remember said it's just easier to
- 15:55Speaker 2: believe the bad stuff.
- 15:56Speaker 3: It's in some movie.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Right, and and I feel like it's just easier to
- 16:02Speaker 2: you know, oh, you're right, because like I talked about,
- 16:05Speaker 2: I did Special Forces, and I talked about the devil
- 16:07Speaker 2: on my shoulder and the angel on my shoulder, and
- 16:09Speaker 2: it's just sometimes it's just easier to believe the devil.
- 16:13Speaker 2: The devil's you know, on my shoulder is just at
- 16:16Speaker 2: me all the time, and I'm like, oh, yeah, that's right.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I don't belong here, and I suck, you know, I'm whatever.
- 16:23Speaker 3: So I think that.
- 16:27Speaker 2: I just I tried try to focus on the positive.
- 16:31Speaker 2: And I will say if I had had any other cast,
- 16:36Speaker 2: maybe it would have been different because we did have
- 16:38Speaker 2: a lot of fun. It wasn't like super serious and
- 16:42Speaker 2: dramatic and you know, all of those things, and it
- 16:47Speaker 2: was just fun.
- 16:49Speaker 3: At least for me. It was.
- 16:51Speaker 5: Well, it's probably perfect because you had you had Ryan
- 16:53Speaker 5: who's like, you know, was the perfect person person for
- 16:57Speaker 5: you at the time, and then outside of that, it
- 16:59Speaker 5: was like he was the one, and then he had
- 17:01Speaker 5: a bunch of people having fun. So you know, it
- 17:04Speaker 5: was probably a perfect, perfect match, perfect world.
- 17:06Speaker 3: For that and for him.
- 17:07Speaker 2: He has always said, thank god that I had that
- 17:12Speaker 2: he had you guys, because he wouldn't have been able
- 17:15Speaker 2: to stick around as long as he did.
- 17:17Speaker 5: And thank god that guy didn't play basketball with us
- 17:20Speaker 5: on the basketball court, remember that, because it was just
- 17:21Speaker 5: us playing bomb I never showed up.
- 17:23Speaker 4: You would have kicked all our asses, right, do you remember?
- 17:26Speaker 1: Do you remember that trust out? I'll never forget that one.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Jamie and I are shooting hoops and we're not invited
- 17:31Speaker 1: on this particular date. I think you guys are going
- 17:33Speaker 1: to uh Sea World and you come over and you
- 17:38Speaker 1: look gorgeous, and you're standing up there at this thing
- 17:40Speaker 1: and there our basketball court was kind of sat down
- 17:43Speaker 1: on the side and we're sitting there and you come
- 17:46Speaker 1: walking over, and at first we think it's a great
- 17:49Speaker 1: thing that you're walking over because we don't realize the
- 17:51Speaker 1: cameras are following you and we should have known that.
- 17:53Speaker 1: But and you go hello boys, and we're like, oh, hey,
- 17:56Speaker 1: how you doing. And we're just hanging out down there,
- 17:59Speaker 1: and we're still it's using great to see you, you know,
- 18:03Speaker 1: and you go, uh, you literally go, well, thanks for
- 18:07Speaker 1: you know, coming up and welcoming me to the house
- 18:09Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 18:10Speaker 4: And we're like, we just we just kept playing basketball.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Well have fun on that day. You know, we'll see
- 18:17Speaker 1: when you get back.
- 18:18Speaker 4: You want a beer, Yeah, you want a beer.
- 18:19Speaker 1: We're just shooting hoops drinking beers. It was like, it
- 18:24Speaker 1: was so funny because you giggled and I remember you
- 18:27Speaker 1: walking away and we're like, does she hate us?
- 18:30Speaker 3: Okay, it's sarcastic.
- 18:33Speaker 5: I remember one thing we went to a go cart
- 18:36Speaker 5: track and Bob and I were up pretty late and
- 18:42Speaker 5: this was so funny. So like we're pretty hungover and
- 18:46Speaker 5: we get to them. We're like, where are we going?
- 18:47Speaker 5: And we're like a go cart track and we both
- 18:49Speaker 5: start laughing. We're like, it's probably not a good idea
- 18:51Speaker 5: right now. First we're going a go cart track. So
- 18:54Speaker 5: this guy was like, these things went like five thousand
- 18:57Speaker 5: miles an hour, right and there's like nine million turns.
- 19:00Speaker 5: I could barely see straight, and oh my god. This
- 19:03Speaker 5: guy was explaining like, you have to hit this apex.
- 19:05Speaker 5: He was ultra serious, the guy at the track, at
- 19:08Speaker 5: this apex, that apex that he was, you know, over
- 19:11Speaker 5: and over and over. So we get to the very
- 19:13Speaker 5: end and Bob goes, sir, what's an What does an
- 19:17Speaker 5: apex mean?
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 19:21Speaker 4: So good.
- 19:21Speaker 1: He's like, when you hit the apex, you want to
- 19:23Speaker 1: make sure that you engage the And I'm like, okay, great.
- 19:26Speaker 1: He's like, any questions, I just won uh the words
- 19:30Speaker 1: you've used six thousand times? What is an apex? What?
- 19:35Speaker 1: I knew what it was, to be fair, I was
- 19:37Speaker 1: just teasing interested.
- 19:38Speaker 5: Going back to your point, you said like you would
- 19:40Speaker 5: kind of remember the negatives because I just interviewed this
- 19:44Speaker 5: pro baseball player, Tyler Matzik, which is coming out tomorrow, and.
- 19:50Speaker 4: He said that.
- 19:50Speaker 5: So he was the number one draft pick in high
- 19:53Speaker 5: school in like two thousand and nine through ninety nine
- 19:56Speaker 5: miles an hour, which is still fast.
- 19:59Speaker 4: But back then you're like you're like an alien, right,
- 20:01Speaker 4: and you fast forward? He do you know? He goes
- 20:05Speaker 4: to the Atlanta Braves does okay?
- 20:06Speaker 5: He goes five and eleven his rookie year, but in
- 20:09Speaker 5: his head, he wasn't perfect, and he was just sort
- 20:12Speaker 5: of focusing on the negative because he prior to it,
- 20:14Speaker 5: he was so good that he developed the yips, so
- 20:16Speaker 5: he couldn't throw ten feet all of a sudden. So
- 20:19Speaker 5: I'm like, this is a Major League picture. All of
- 20:21Speaker 5: a sudden, he couldn't throw ten feet, and I go,
- 20:23Speaker 5: where would it go?
- 20:23Speaker 4: He's like, well, over my head to my feet.
- 20:26Speaker 5: Not twenty nineteen, he's living in a He's living in
- 20:28Speaker 5: a trailer park in an RV. I don't know IF's
- 20:31Speaker 5: a trailer marker. He's living in RV. And then he
- 20:36Speaker 5: met this Navy seal who I interviewed, who taught him
- 20:38Speaker 5: kind of a different mindset perspective, which is more of
- 20:41Speaker 5: the stuff that I tapped into when I was trying
- 20:43Speaker 5: to combat anxiety. And twenty one he wins the World
- 20:46Speaker 5: Series for the Brave strikes out the side Yeah nlcs,
- 20:51Speaker 5: including the well what he said I go, what do
- 20:52Speaker 5: you think caused it? And he goes, well, when you're
- 20:55Speaker 5: a kid, if you really think about it, you only
- 20:58Speaker 5: really remember. And this is for adults too, kind of
- 21:01Speaker 5: like you said, the highs and the lows, but like
- 21:04Speaker 5: the extreme lows, not maybe not a low, but like
- 21:07Speaker 5: if somebody's publicly scrutinized, you're going to remember that because
- 21:10Speaker 5: you don't like it. And it's not even that it's
- 21:13Speaker 5: not even true, So your brain doesn't necessarily forget those things,
- 21:17Speaker 5: and they sit in your subconscious and you also remember
- 21:20Speaker 5: the highs, but those even you know, some of THO
- 21:23Speaker 5: like he just remember as coaches yelling him.
- 21:25Speaker 4: When he was eight or nine and they were maybe
- 21:27Speaker 4: a little over the top.
- 21:28Speaker 5: And he's like, you know, it's not like I totally
- 21:32Speaker 5: remember it, but it sits in your subconscious and it
- 21:35Speaker 5: could come out.
- 21:36Speaker 4: So it's interesting. It's just the extremes I think we
- 21:38Speaker 4: deal with.
- 21:49Speaker 2: You know, I haven't talked about this. I don't feel like,
- 21:52Speaker 2: not for any reason, or maybe I have. I had
- 21:55Speaker 2: a panic attack. I've had a couple of them, and
- 22:00Speaker 2: I don't know if that classifies me because I haven't
- 22:02Speaker 2: seen a therapist about it. But I don't know if
- 22:05Speaker 2: that classifies me as having panic disorder or what, but yeah,
- 22:10Speaker 2: I it was a really really scary situation. Ryan wasn't there.
- 22:13Speaker 2: It was when we had just announced that he had
- 22:16Speaker 2: lime disease, and I thought he was going to lose
- 22:20Speaker 2: his job because we were in the press a lot,
- 22:23Speaker 2: and people were calling the fire department like directly and
- 22:27Speaker 2: like wanting to pass on messages, wanting them to pass
- 22:31Speaker 2: on messages, and you know, they have a lot of
- 22:33Speaker 2: other things to worry about other than passing on messages
- 22:36Speaker 2: to Ryan. So I got really scared. I remember the
- 22:40Speaker 2: weirdest thing. I don't know if you experienced this, but
- 22:43Speaker 2: my nose went numb. It like was tingly, and that's
- 22:49Speaker 2: that's when I knew something was wrong.
- 22:51Speaker 3: I was like, Okay, this is really weird.
- 22:53Speaker 2: I guess you have like the.
- 22:54Speaker 5: Heart racing and you couldn't think you're going to die
- 22:57Speaker 5: of a heart attack.
- 22:57Speaker 3: It's dizzy. Yeah, it was horrible. It's really scary.
- 23:03Speaker 2: So I'm so sorry that you've experienced this, but I
- 23:05Speaker 2: feel like you're helping so many people with your podcast.
- 23:08Speaker 3: It's called stepping into the fire.
- 23:11Speaker 5: Stepping into the fire, and then Bob if you don't
- 23:14Speaker 5: give me more subscribers, we're gonna call it stepping into.
- 23:16Speaker 4: The ship pretty soon.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Hey, buddy, we're going to talk all about First of all,
- 23:22Speaker 1: I want to say this, I think you're you're a
- 23:25Speaker 1: hilarious guy, and you know, I love you to death,
- 23:26Speaker 1: But you're actually a really good interviewer. I mean that
- 23:29Speaker 1: Mike Tyson interviewed, that you've interviewed Mike Tyson. I know
- 23:33Speaker 1: you've interviewed a couple different professional golfers, baseball players, I mean,
- 23:38Speaker 1: several big name actors. I mean, the people that you
- 23:42Speaker 1: get on your podcasts are just mind blowing. And I've
- 23:45Speaker 1: I've often asked you. I'm like, how do you get
- 23:47Speaker 1: these people? You know? I just reached out to their people,
- 23:50Speaker 1: you know, And but I just think it's crazy that
- 23:52Speaker 1: you you you've gotten some of these people on there.
- 23:53Speaker 1: But I mean, you're a really good interviewer, and you know,
- 23:56Speaker 1: I think you're great at listening.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Well, I think I'm not. I think that I appreciate
- 24:00Speaker 5: you saying that that's a skill I have to work on.
- 24:02Speaker 5: I think is I interrupt a lot?
- 24:04Speaker 4: I watched it. I'm like, what am I doing to
- 24:06Speaker 4: stop in repting.
- 24:07Speaker 5: But a lot of that is like I'm really nervous, right,
- 24:10Speaker 5: So it's like I'm jumping in when I shouldn't.
- 24:13Speaker 4: It's just because I'm fighting off nerves, you know what
- 24:15Speaker 4: I mean?
- 24:17Speaker 1: Wow?
- 24:17Speaker 4: Yeah, ed Ramp guy that.
- 24:19Speaker 5: I interviewed, so he was going to be the globally
- 24:23Speaker 5: the CEO of Caterpillar CEO. It's als right, So he
- 24:28Speaker 5: doesn't have a mental health issue and he's got the opposite.
- 24:32Speaker 4: And so that resonated with me.
- 24:34Speaker 5: Like I said, I couldn't beat anxiety or what I
- 24:38Speaker 5: was dealing with in an office I had to confront.
- 24:41Speaker 5: So the Bachelor was kind of Bacherette was sort of
- 24:44Speaker 5: my Mount Everest, so to speak. Right, So if I
- 24:48Speaker 5: can go do that, that's all the possible fears I
- 24:53Speaker 5: can have. Negative outcomes could come out on that show.
- 24:57Speaker 5: But for this guy, he's got a term illness. He's
- 25:02Speaker 5: about to be ceof Caterpillar. It's a two to five
- 25:05Speaker 5: year death sentence. But I get more out of this
- 25:09Speaker 5: guy's story than maybe a book or a therapist or
- 25:12Speaker 5: anybody else. And I asked him, I said, well, obviously,
- 25:14Speaker 5: what you know the depression that you must have felt
- 25:17Speaker 5: when you get this diagnosis and he goes, no, I've
- 25:20Speaker 5: never been depressed.
- 25:21Speaker 4: I've never been anxious about it. And what he felt
- 25:24Speaker 4: was gratitude.
- 25:26Speaker 5: So it's stories like that because I could get yeah,
- 25:28Speaker 5: because I could be negative. I get pretty negative. I
- 25:30Speaker 5: get in my own head, as Bob knows. But to
- 25:34Speaker 5: hear that, and Bob's super positive. And that's why I
- 25:36Speaker 5: like people like that because it gets me out of
- 25:38Speaker 5: some of my negative spirals. But like number one, he's
- 25:41Speaker 5: thankful for the life he's lived. He's walked his daughter
- 25:45Speaker 5: down the aisle, you know, he's done gulfed with his son.
- 25:48Speaker 4: Things like that. He's passed two to five years, he's
- 25:51Speaker 4: eleven years in and he's doing well.
- 25:55Speaker 5: But he didn't follow the kind of typical approach that
- 25:59Speaker 5: everybody said, hey, you got two to five years, this
- 26:00Speaker 5: is what you're going to do.
- 26:01Speaker 4: And he said, I don't. I don't operate like that.
- 26:03Speaker 5: It's just not how I'm wired, and that you know,
- 26:07Speaker 5: it was sort of like similar to anxiety.
- 26:09Speaker 4: But he's trying to beat this thing.
- 26:11Speaker 5: So it's about, you know, trying to serve other people,
- 26:15Speaker 5: which goes back to some of the Navy seals I've
- 26:17Speaker 5: interviewed where their motto is kind of embrace the suck
- 26:21Speaker 5: and yeah, it's going to be uncomfortable. So going on
- 26:24Speaker 5: the battery for me was uncomfortable. But I'm not getting
- 26:26Speaker 5: bullet shot right, Yeah, I just look like an idiot
- 26:29Speaker 5: on TV. So it's embracing the suck in difficulty. But
- 26:34Speaker 5: on the other side of that is like, why is
- 26:35Speaker 5: the Navy seal doing that? It's to serve other people.
- 26:39Speaker 5: So like the beauty of the show, the opportunity that
- 26:44Speaker 5: I had with you guys and Tristan for not dumping
- 26:47Speaker 5: me day one, which you should have. You give me
- 26:48Speaker 5: longer than you show, but you know, to use a
- 26:52Speaker 5: show like that as a platform to help other people,
- 26:56Speaker 5: and I've had when I went on This is funny
- 27:01Speaker 5: after Diane Sawyer, I told my story. That was the
- 27:04Speaker 5: first place I really told it, I think, and I
- 27:07Speaker 5: didn't plan on it.
- 27:07Speaker 4: I just did.
- 27:08Speaker 5: And they're like, well, what are you doing with it?
- 27:11Speaker 5: And I'm like, oh, I've got a I've got a book.
- 27:13Speaker 5: I didn't have a book. And then they're like, well,
- 27:16Speaker 5: where can we find out more information on you? And
- 27:19Speaker 5: I said, well on my website. I didn't have a website,
- 27:21Speaker 5: So you knew these things. So we're walking off the
- 27:24Speaker 5: show and Bob goes, you don't have a book or
- 27:28Speaker 5: a website to you, and I go, I go, no,
- 27:32Speaker 5: You're like, we better call my web hosting guy and
- 27:35Speaker 5: like get a website, and.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Ye, yeah we got you hooked up pretty quick.
- 27:39Speaker 5: Yeah, but it led to a book and it led
- 27:41Speaker 5: to But I had six million emails after talking about
- 27:46Speaker 5: that on Oprah and Diansaur from people that had that
- 27:50Speaker 5: were suicidal, that were depressed, that were anxious, especially teenagers,
- 27:53Speaker 5: but just people that had never talked about it, because
- 27:56Speaker 5: I don't think people, especially a guy, that had ever
- 27:59Speaker 5: really talked about mental health. Now it's a little more
- 28:01Speaker 5: obviously out there and the stigma's been.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Broken, but yeah, post COVID, it's definitely out there more.
- 28:05Speaker 1: But yeah, you're right, it wasn't. It wasn't then, It
- 28:08Speaker 1: wasn't something.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but I have to say I think that it's
- 28:11Speaker 2: still uh requires attention, you know. I don't think that
- 28:18Speaker 2: people talk about it near enough. So thank you for
- 28:20Speaker 2: what you're doing with your podcast and just being really
- 28:24Speaker 2: talking about it and coming on the podcast.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Thank you guys.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Finally did it. We did it. We finally got him
- 28:31Speaker 1: on here.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Oh, thank you so much. I know it was difficult.
- 28:34Speaker 5: I was actually dealing with my own anxiety, so that
- 28:37Speaker 5: was some of that avoidance and finally I had a confronted.
- 28:39Speaker 4: So thanks for coming in there with me.
- 28:43Speaker 1: We love you, buddy, and congratulate.
- 28:44Speaker 4: I love you guys.
- 28:45Speaker 5: Thank you so much. It's great, great seeing you, Trista, Bob.
- 28:48Speaker 5: We'll see it see in the next light you got.
- 28:55Speaker 1: We love you too, brother.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Love you too. That our good thank you.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Trista. Isn't he something he is?
- 29:02Speaker 3: He's such a great guy.
- 29:03Speaker 2: I'm so thankful he was on the season, and you
- 29:06Speaker 2: know he is he's always self depreciating, always, you know,
- 29:11Speaker 2: like he I just wish he believed in himself more,
- 29:15Speaker 2: you know, and that goes out to all all people
- 29:17Speaker 2: who you know, deal with anxiety and panic disorders. I
- 29:22Speaker 2: just if I could do anything, you know, Yeah, no,
- 29:26Speaker 2: I give them some belief in themselves.
- 29:28Speaker 1: So see, that's your big heart, that's your big heart,
- 29:31Speaker 1: that's your you know, that's where you come from. Which
- 29:33Speaker 1: which uh, you know, it was just a perfect storm.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I think it was a perfect storm that we were
- 29:37Speaker 1: all on that show together and became friends and right
- 29:39Speaker 1: you know, and then you know, Jamie and I like,
- 29:42Speaker 1: I mean, I love it because you know, Ryan, Jamie
- 29:45Speaker 1: and I are on a text thread together too, by
- 29:47Speaker 1: the way, and we touched it through it now and then,
- 29:49Speaker 1: and you know, it's so nice to have that relationship
- 29:53Speaker 1: that's continued on for twenty some years, I mean longer
- 29:55Speaker 1: than you know, some conventional friendships that you might have
- 29:58Speaker 1: had along the way. And here we are, twenty three
- 30:00Speaker 1: years later, still talking and that you and I all
- 30:03Speaker 1: the time, and it's pretty awesome, you know. So I
- 30:06Speaker 1: thank you for that. I thank you for that very much.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Of course, right back at you, and thanks for tuning in.
- 30:13Speaker 3: Guys.
- 30:14Speaker 2: I don't know when we're going to talk next, but
- 30:17Speaker 2: hopefully we can figure something out because we miss we
- 30:21Speaker 2: miss chatting with all of you. I miss the ogs,
- 30:24Speaker 2: and I know that we have a lot to talk
- 30:27Speaker 2: about coming up with Golden and Paradise, and I know
- 30:31Speaker 2: that Ashley and Ben will be doing lots of that.
- 30:33Speaker 2: But and then we'll have another Dancing with the Stars season.
- 30:37Speaker 2: I know that they're casting for Special Forces, so hopefully
- 30:42Speaker 2: that will be coming up soon. So I don't know
- 30:45Speaker 2: who knows what's in the works, but if you want
- 30:47Speaker 2: to hear from anyone in the OG REALM, let us
- 30:51Speaker 2: know we'd love to have them on.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Yeah, we would for sure. Well, I love this day.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Thank you so much. Thanks everybody for watch out listen
- 31:00Speaker 1: for the almost famous ogs. I love you, my friend
- 31:04Speaker 1: Trista Sutter, Nate Wren and I had to throw it
- 31:08Speaker 1: in there and I can't wait until next time. M
