- 1:04Speaker 2: big shot himself Brandon Vick. Brandon, how you doing today?
- 1:07Speaker 2: My man?
- 1:07Speaker 3: Doing good? This time of year, always think about sweaty bowls.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Well it is August.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Yeah, there you go, there you golle Tennessee.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I'm curious your opinion. Worse weather month in Nashville, Tennessee
- 1:22Speaker 2: August or January?
- 1:24Speaker 3: Now, I say AUGUSTA. I don't mind cold weather. I
- 1:30Speaker 3: don't mind ice storms. I don't mind you get like
- 1:33Speaker 3: you lose power, you're scared for your life.
- 1:35Speaker 2: You're out for a week.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I only lost power for twelve hours. So these old
- 1:40Speaker 3: quesses need to suck it up.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Okay, that's good, but that'll go over I will.
- 1:45Speaker 3: I'm fine. There's the me. You can clothe yourself blankets.
- 1:49Speaker 3: But when it's hot, it's hot, when you are just
- 1:52Speaker 3: butt ass naked and you're still hot, what are you
- 1:54Speaker 3: gonna do?
- 1:55Speaker 2: Well? Ice water, getting an ice bath, like an ice
- 2:00Speaker 2: un yeah, ice plunge. Yeah.
- 2:02Speaker 4: I think there's an in between. I think the spring
- 2:05Speaker 4: with the storms, tornadoes.
- 2:07Speaker 2: That's a good point in this area. It's a good point.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Well, listen, that's Brett, and Brett's birthday is in August,
- 2:14Speaker 3: and so, but I have a question because Stony always
- 2:17Speaker 3: was lucky. You always had your birthday in the summer September.
- 2:21Speaker 3: It was always after school, but you sort of got
- 2:26Speaker 3: to have it. And then it ended up where we
- 2:29Speaker 3: did start school like August.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, when when I was younger, school started later, so.
- 2:35Speaker 3: I was in the middle of August, right, it's.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Real something something or late August something like that.
- 2:40Speaker 2: But high school was middle high school was early August, right,
- 2:43Speaker 2: early college like borderline.
- 2:46Speaker 3: So I was in basketball all year. You didn't really
- 2:49Speaker 3: go to class.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right.
- 2:50Speaker 4: I did remember that.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I would watch it blinds and he'd be playing one
- 2:56Speaker 3: on one with someone. I thought, oh, I guess he
- 2:57Speaker 3: doesn't have last today.
- 2:58Speaker 2: You know I did, I just didn't go.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a pleasant day.
- 3:01Speaker 4: I remember what you're saying, like, I get the reference
- 3:04Speaker 4: you're making, But for a moment I thought you were
- 3:06Speaker 4: saying he was on the MTSU basketball.
- 3:09Speaker 3: He should have been. There was a time where him
- 3:12Speaker 3: and I played and people came over and take a
- 3:14Speaker 3: cord and we just sat there as though, I guess,
- 3:17Speaker 3: I guess we're being pushed out.
- 3:18Speaker 2: That's right.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Yeah, but anytime it was a nice day, Stony. Really,
- 3:23Speaker 3: you really couldn't count on him going to class and
- 3:25Speaker 3: taking the show.
- 3:27Speaker 4: When it got to the spring.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Actually, well, sometime this past whatever, you made a comment
- 3:33Speaker 3: someone said about doing something during score. You're like, yeah, man,
- 3:37Speaker 3: I'm like, anytime it was nice we could shoot the ball.
- 3:40Speaker 3: And I thought this guy like you're gonna say, hey,
- 3:43Speaker 3: you have a test man, you know, the some hoops.
- 3:47Speaker 2: First I was I was a little cocky in college,
- 3:51Speaker 2: and I thought to myself, I'm good enough at everything
- 3:55Speaker 2: that I do that i can skip class and I'll
- 3:58Speaker 2: still be all right in this in this class.
- 4:00Speaker 3: And when you graduated a year later.
- 4:04Speaker 2: What happened was one day I showed up to class
- 4:09Speaker 2: for my Drugs and Alcohol class, where the entire grade
- 4:13Speaker 2: for the entire semester was based off of three test scores.
- 4:17Speaker 2: And I showed up to class one day after playing
- 4:20Speaker 2: basketball at our apartment complex because it was a nice day,
- 4:24Speaker 2: deciding I'm not going to go to class today. I
- 4:26Speaker 2: showed up to class the next time and there were
- 4:29Speaker 2: test scores posted on the wall, and I realized I
- 4:33Speaker 2: skipped on a day that there was a test in
- 4:36Speaker 2: a class where our entire grade. But you know what's
- 4:39Speaker 2: what's frustrating about that is that my other two test
- 4:42Speaker 2: scores in that class prior to that point were a
- 4:46Speaker 2: ninety eight and a ninety six, and that's what it is.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And then I got a zero on the third one, yeah,
- 4:52Speaker 2: and failed the class. I remember jealous, Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I was quite jealous of you two, because either it
- 5:02Speaker 3: was either Stoney had like pure confidence, and the classes
- 5:08Speaker 3: you were taking were like you would just like, you
- 5:11Speaker 3: know what, I'm gonna skip this class and go catch butterflies.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I would get a C or a
- 5:17Speaker 2: B in that class.
- 5:18Speaker 3: And then but even worse is Brett would And sometimes
- 5:22Speaker 3: we're in the same class together, and it's like you studied,
- 5:27Speaker 3: let's just say two nights before, and we would get
- 5:30Speaker 3: our test scories and I would get like a C
- 5:31Speaker 3: and you would get an A.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Mis I'm like, god, the son of a bit, Like
- 5:36Speaker 2: I feel like going up to.
- 5:37Speaker 3: The teacher and say, hey, just so you know, this
- 5:39Speaker 3: fucking guy is.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Not even studies, so you know, but you know, we
- 5:43Speaker 4: all have our gifts.
- 5:44Speaker 3: It is no and you did and I and I
- 5:47Speaker 3: I have said this to my wife before. I said,
- 5:51Speaker 3: I would be jealous. I would really be jealous of Brett.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I was like, and Stoney had his own thing too,
- 5:55Speaker 3: where like you just clicked with it. I was like,
- 5:59Speaker 3: but if Brett and I were in the same class,
- 6:01Speaker 3: it was almost a curse. Because it's not that I
- 6:04Speaker 3: thought I could do better than Brett, but I I
- 6:07Speaker 3: didn't the effort I put in in the weeks that
- 6:12Speaker 3: try to memorize and I know he wouldn't do it. Yeah,
- 6:16Speaker 3: but when he comes back, and especially writing, you were
- 6:18Speaker 3: always you were always really good at the writing classes
- 6:21Speaker 3: and come back and it was like even as a
- 6:24Speaker 3: minus would be plug whatever it may be. And I'm
- 6:27Speaker 3: just like I couldn't get there, and I'm just like, god, dang,
- 6:32Speaker 3: I'm like I don't know what. I'm like what to do,
- 6:36Speaker 3: and like remember the science class we were all in,
- 6:38Speaker 3: which was a shot yeah, which was a ship showed
- 6:41Speaker 3: with Yeah, so to get any kind of decent grade.
- 6:45Speaker 3: But I'm like, oh my gosh, and like and because
- 6:47Speaker 3: in high school I didn't I didn't study that much memorization.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Aced it moved on and in college was a bit
- 6:56Speaker 3: of a bit of a wake up call where like, oh,
- 6:59Speaker 3: I do have to put him more than maybe like
- 7:01Speaker 3: the other people.
- 7:02Speaker 4: You were very diligent.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I was. And part of it was OCD. I
- 7:06Speaker 3: think now that I've gotten older, and I think I
- 7:09Speaker 3: and there's the parts of me that just knew, like
- 7:12Speaker 3: I do remember recognizing that you guys like I could
- 7:15Speaker 3: I some things I could do and some things I
- 7:18Speaker 3: couldn't do that you guys could. And it was a
- 7:21Speaker 3: figuring out process, which I think college was great for.
- 7:24Speaker 3: I don't think it's great for a lot of things,
- 7:26Speaker 3: but I do think it kind of woke me up
- 7:29Speaker 3: to like, Okay, you know what, these guys can do
- 7:32Speaker 3: it in a week. I need an extra week. I've
- 7:35Speaker 3: got to do this, this, this, I've got to read.
- 7:37Speaker 2: But then also, well, this guy got a zero on
- 7:40Speaker 2: his test because he was playing basketball.
- 7:42Speaker 3: But well, let me say I would say, oh, it's
- 7:45Speaker 3: a sunny day outside.
- 7:47Speaker 2: This is where I will say, I do remember, I
- 7:54Speaker 2: do remember you you had to have somebody proof read
- 7:58Speaker 2: all of your papers.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Oh, and I think Brett. Yeah, and Brett did a
- 8:01Speaker 3: lot of them.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And I remember I remember at the time thinking he
- 8:07Speaker 2: always goes to Brett. I think, I think he thinks
- 8:09Speaker 2: I'm stupid. Oh, but then I thought, but then I thought, oh,
- 8:13Speaker 2: but this is Brett's problem to deal with.
- 8:17Speaker 3: But here's the thing. But here's the thing. I never
- 8:19Speaker 3: thought that, but I knew that he knew. Yeah, And
- 8:23Speaker 3: I thought, I thought, well, Stoney's catching grasshoppers. I don't
- 8:28Speaker 3: want to bother him. Brett could do it at eight
- 8:32Speaker 3: o'clock at night after a guitar hero and we'll be good,
- 8:34Speaker 3: oh man, and he does and and and I did.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I really I relied on both of you, guys. I
- 8:40Speaker 3: think a lot where my confidence has kind of grown
- 8:44Speaker 3: since then, But like, oh yeah, there's things where I
- 8:48Speaker 3: know I asked you to do. I know, I asked
- 8:50Speaker 3: you to do a lot in that and you could
- 8:52Speaker 3: read it. But the thing is, and both of.
- 8:54Speaker 2: You were good.
- 8:55Speaker 3: But you could Brett. You could read it very quickly
- 8:58Speaker 3: and say hey, this, this and this, and it was
- 9:01Speaker 3: very it was it was very simple.
- 9:03Speaker 2: But I knew, like, oh, whereas if you handed it
- 9:08Speaker 2: to me.
- 9:09Speaker 3: You need to put down your basketball, remember you're not playing.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I would racketball. We would go play racquetball. That was fun.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I would say, hey, man, this is good, having not
- 9:19Speaker 2: read a single word of it, so that I could go.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Find this looks fine. I got some friends to play
- 9:25Speaker 3: bad and I hope you're in fairness.
- 9:27Speaker 4: I was pursuing like a writing you, which ironically the
- 9:32Speaker 4: two of you may do more in the field of
- 9:35Speaker 4: one of you absolutely does in the field of journalism
- 9:39Speaker 4: than I do at this point.
- 9:40Speaker 3: That's true sports psychology and just regular psychology. And I
- 9:45Speaker 3: did mass calm with film studies. There was there's some
- 9:51Speaker 3: there is some truth to that. But I I even
- 9:53Speaker 3: remember telling my wife, I'm like, I'm like, yeah, I'm like,
- 9:56Speaker 3: I have these two guys like you weren't even in
- 9:59Speaker 3: the class. Zoom, can you read that? But there was
- 10:04Speaker 3: always a running joke about if it was a pretty day,
- 10:08Speaker 3: you couldn't find I mean, he may just be right
- 10:13Speaker 3: over here in the apartment, or he may have been
- 10:15Speaker 3: on campus.
- 10:17Speaker 2: There were there were times, I'm not even sure if
- 10:20Speaker 2: you guys are aware of this. There were times that
- 10:22Speaker 2: I would fill my backpack up and I always I
- 10:26Speaker 2: always had a change of clothes in my backpack just
- 10:28Speaker 2: in case. Like I remember Andrew Begley, our buddy, our
- 10:32Speaker 2: buddy Begley being like, hey, I'm going I'm going to
- 10:35Speaker 2: the rec center, and I'd be like, all right, I'll
- 10:37Speaker 2: meet you there. We'll go shoot some basketball. There were
- 10:42Speaker 2: times when I would get on our shuttle from our
- 10:45Speaker 2: apartment to campus and I would have a change of
- 10:47Speaker 2: clothes in my bag, and I would get to the
- 10:50Speaker 2: building that my class was in and just be like,
- 10:53Speaker 2: I don't want to do this, and I would turn
- 10:55Speaker 2: around and go to the record.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Remember playing and Begley was definitely a part of it,
- 11:01Speaker 3: and I twisted my ankle because I was trying to
- 11:03Speaker 3: hit it like a volley path. And then and then
- 11:07Speaker 3: like two days later, I was in an art class
- 11:09Speaker 3: and I was walking back and I miss stepped on
- 11:11Speaker 3: the sidewalk and twisted the same ankle. Yeah, but yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 3: I remember my gosh, we were the In case anybody
- 11:20Speaker 3: doesn't know, we all three lived in a dorm together,
- 11:23Speaker 3: and we were the hall monitors. And I loved just
- 11:27Speaker 3: finding anything. And Begley was he was a good sport.
- 11:30Speaker 3: But he would come in and that backpack would be
- 11:33Speaker 3: filled with god knows from, you know, Andrew Jackson liquors.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I mean he had that thing for him, like, oh
- 11:42Speaker 3: where are you going? And he would smile and stuff
- 11:44Speaker 3: because you know, no one really took us.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Sat well, you weren't supposed to have it in the
- 11:47Speaker 2: dorm either, right.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Part of it was like enforcing the rules, but we
- 11:51Speaker 3: also knew that, like people are fucking the showers, but
- 11:55Speaker 3: I'm not gonna tell them anybody. I'm not gonna tell
- 11:57Speaker 3: Stu's time here. I'm not gonna tell him what's going on. Yeah,
- 12:01Speaker 3: he was fifty three, and but but it was it
- 12:06Speaker 3: was I miss. I don't know about you, guys, I
- 12:09Speaker 3: miss that time because it's it's so stupid. Yeah, but
- 12:13Speaker 3: it's also very much of like we really didn't take
- 12:18Speaker 3: like we truly didn't take anything that seriously, even if
- 12:21Speaker 3: it was something serious, like we had no participation in.
- 12:26Speaker 3: We thought it was funny to point it out as
- 12:30Speaker 3: if we had total experience in drinking whatever whatever the
- 12:36Speaker 3: case may be. And people would come up and like
- 12:39Speaker 3: in the doors and they bring girls over. We had
- 12:42Speaker 3: a good friend, Zach who lived with us, and anytime
- 12:45Speaker 3: a girl came over, it, yeah I would. Yeah, I've
- 12:49Speaker 3: just showed up in underwear and chocolate milk and.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Can you imagine? I mean, and now that we're older,
- 12:56Speaker 2: I just want to have it happen. Can you imagine
- 12:58Speaker 2: trying to make love to a woman in your bedroom
- 13:01Speaker 2: while the three of us are out there doing who
- 13:05Speaker 2: knows what?
- 13:06Speaker 3: And it was like it was a goal, Like, yeah,
- 13:10Speaker 3: he was a trooper and he's still with his wife.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Stafey got bust him his coach.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Now he's not going to be able to post any
- 13:18Speaker 2: of this.
- 13:19Speaker 4: He's a real adult.
- 13:20Speaker 3: He is, He's a real adult. But I just I
- 13:23Speaker 3: loved the idea and we had a friend Brandon McCall
- 13:28Speaker 3: and like I, I love the idea of just taking
- 13:33Speaker 3: something that was was I mean, in all honesty, it
- 13:36Speaker 3: was purely innocent. But if I could, but if I
- 13:39Speaker 3: could twist it anyway, I will certainly trying those times
- 13:44Speaker 3: where we three had conversations and maybe we had girls
- 13:48Speaker 3: that we liked. I had plenty of conversations with Brett
- 13:51Speaker 3: about ladies and it was and it was it was
- 13:57Speaker 3: actually rather serious at the time, which it seems stupid now,
- 14:00Speaker 3: but but it brings me back to So Brett's birthdays
- 14:06Speaker 3: in August, it's about a month from mine, and it's
- 14:08Speaker 3: always in and you said, you we may sometimes we
- 14:12Speaker 3: celebrated because an hour where we lived the County Fair.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Which is now the same count which is now the state,
- 14:19Speaker 4: biggest fair in the state, and it's always white. The
- 14:22Speaker 4: spectacle always get a.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Little nostalgic this time of year, thinking about like those
- 14:27Speaker 2: college days and the excitement of like the Wilson County
- 14:30Speaker 2: Fair being like the last thing we'd do that summer
- 14:33Speaker 2: before we went back to school. The three of us
- 14:37Speaker 2: would go back to Murphysboro, which was twenty minutes down
- 14:39Speaker 2: the road from where I grew up. But you know,
- 14:43Speaker 2: we did have friends that would go to Knoxville, that
- 14:45Speaker 2: would go out of state, that would drift away.
- 14:47Speaker 3: From some didn't go to college because they were stupid.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Yeah that too, Yeah that too something. But yeah, like
- 15:00Speaker 2: it always does this time of year. It's my favorite
- 15:03Speaker 2: time of year because I mean, obviously, like football seasons,
- 15:06Speaker 2: around the corner falls my favorite season. It's around the corner.
- 15:09Speaker 2: But there is this sort.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Of I don't know what this is it because we
- 15:16Speaker 3: know what we used to do.
- 15:18Speaker 2: When we were it brings back memories of just how
- 15:24Speaker 2: exciting it was back then and how many good memories
- 15:27Speaker 2: we made.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Like you met a lot of people, you went into people, but.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Certain sites and smelling Yeah.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Yeah, but.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Now you guys, tell me it happened. I really, I
- 15:40Speaker 3: really don't think I was part of the second one,
- 15:41Speaker 3: but we were thrown up on twice in one at
- 15:46Speaker 3: least one of it. And I remember I had this
- 15:50Speaker 3: second ass Abercrombie and Fit shirt that said joker and
- 15:53Speaker 3: I thought, oh this is perfect.
- 15:54Speaker 2: You were hot.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Shit, I was strutting. I thought for sure girls were
- 16:00Speaker 3: gonna blow me. I didn't know how sex.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Right there on the midway I thought.
- 16:03Speaker 3: For sure, for thirty two dollars for this shirt, this
- 16:07Speaker 3: is this is bound, this is bound to happen. And
- 16:10Speaker 3: so but I remember us three and I and you
- 16:15Speaker 3: guys made I don't We were walking by it and
- 16:19Speaker 3: I don't even know what we were doing.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I'm telling you we were meeting girls.
- 16:23Speaker 3: I don't think we were in line for anything.
- 16:25Speaker 2: No, no, no, we weren't.
- 16:26Speaker 3: In the text, I can get with that.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Then the call we had was, hey, we're in line
- 16:33Speaker 2: to get on the Starship Troopers.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Yeah. That spunk, which is something that spun around.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Right, because I was wondering were we meeting girls or
- 16:45Speaker 4: were we.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Hoping to meet We were meeting girls.
- 16:49Speaker 3: No, no, we were already there and we had It
- 16:52Speaker 3: wasn't like we got there because of them.
- 16:55Speaker 2: That's let's make this distinction. We were meeting girls that
- 17:00Speaker 2: we thought, oh we've got a shot with They thought that.
- 17:07Speaker 3: I remember putting a cloth and thought I'm going to
- 17:10Speaker 3: man them.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yes, yes, but they said, hey, we're in line. They
- 17:15Speaker 2: called and said we're in line.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Because was a very big ride.
- 17:20Speaker 2: I don't even know if text was a thing at
- 17:21Speaker 2: the time, but it was like, hey, we're in line
- 17:24Speaker 2: to get on this ride, come meet us here. So
- 17:26Speaker 2: we had gone to the ride not to get on
- 17:29Speaker 2: the ride, but to wait for it to come off
- 17:32Speaker 2: of it. So we were standing at the fence literally
- 17:35Speaker 2: watching the thing spin around in front of us.
- 17:37Speaker 3: As I have explained it to us, it was like
- 17:43Speaker 3: a hot soup hot rain, and I had, yes hot rain.
- 17:47Speaker 3: I thought, I really thought it was raining, but it
- 17:50Speaker 3: was warm, and a piece of lettuce was on my shoulder,
- 17:54Speaker 3: so gross, I remember it to this day. But here's
- 17:58Speaker 3: the thing you remembers let us on my shoulder is
- 18:02Speaker 3: the part that was on your mouth? Oh my god.
- 18:08Speaker 3: But here's my question. Do y'all remember which one said
- 18:12Speaker 3: I think someone threw up because I did not. I
- 18:17Speaker 3: don't think I said it, and I don't think it
- 18:19Speaker 3: registered in like one of you said it. And then
- 18:23Speaker 3: it really clicked in.
- 18:24Speaker 4: My mind the memory. In my mind, I felt the
- 18:28Speaker 4: hot rain as you described it, which is perfect, and
- 18:32Speaker 4: then it kind of fades to black in my mind.
- 18:34Speaker 3: So I remember going to the bathroom after the fact
- 18:38Speaker 3: and trying to wipe it down. And we're laughing because
- 18:42Speaker 3: Stony talked about it was in his mouth or on
- 18:44Speaker 3: his lip.
- 18:44Speaker 2: So no, here's what happened. Yeah, here's my memory of it.
- 18:49Speaker 2: We were laughing at you because you had this big
- 18:52Speaker 2: chunk of lettuce and we were like, we were like, oh,
- 18:56Speaker 2: look at this. Can you believe Brandon got thrown.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Out one of some one of you said I think
- 19:03Speaker 3: it's raining. Somebody said it was him. It was because
- 19:08Speaker 3: I thought this is strange, but I don't think anybody
- 19:11Speaker 3: saw a fragment of anything until I said something my
- 19:15Speaker 3: shirt and then it.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Became a hym so I was I said something stupid,
- 19:23Speaker 2: like look at Brandon, look at this chunk of lettuce
- 19:26Speaker 2: on his shirt, and he goes, dude, you've got it
- 19:30Speaker 2: on your mouth. And I was like, what it's like, dude,
- 19:35Speaker 2: it's on your mouth. And I remember reaching up and
- 19:37Speaker 2: feeling like this creamy, chunky substance on my lips, right
- 19:47Speaker 2: but I and I remember thinking like, oh my god,
- 19:50Speaker 2: this changes everything. And then I looked down and it
- 19:54Speaker 2: was just like all across my shirt and then we
- 20:00Speaker 2: were like, what.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Are parents about? Like, I remember being like, well.
- 20:06Speaker 2: We had to. We had to tell the girls that
- 20:10Speaker 2: we were there to meet, like, hey, such a lame thing.
- 20:17Speaker 2: We were trying so hard to impress the girl was.
- 20:20Speaker 3: It and Brett will know more than was it? Was
- 20:23Speaker 3: it for you? I don't remember liking anybody that I don't.
- 20:28Speaker 4: I don't even remember who we were meeting a certain girl.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I think you talked about that.
- 20:37Speaker 3: If that was the next you haven't gotten to like
- 20:43Speaker 3: college is what I really remember with you.
- 20:44Speaker 4: It is perfect that we really thought we were cool
- 20:49Speaker 4: going to meet you, and this is how it turned out.
- 20:54Speaker 3: It really is a movie.
- 20:55Speaker 2: We had to take our shirts off and walk out.
- 20:59Speaker 3: We must have known shirts or something because.
- 21:00Speaker 2: I was wearing I was wearing a wife beater, which
- 21:03Speaker 2: probably a white shirt in hindsight, makes matters even worse.
- 21:08Speaker 4: You just fit in really well that I was.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Gonna say it will, but I that was a Did
- 21:15Speaker 2: we leave right after that?
- 21:16Speaker 4: I'm surely we recover from that. Yeah, I don't know,
- 21:19Speaker 4: just go do something fun after that.
- 21:22Speaker 3: But I do feel like we like we did tell
- 21:25Speaker 3: a few people, like I told someone threw up on us,
- 21:29Speaker 3: Like at this bring bring around.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I told I told the girls about it, and that
- 21:36Speaker 2: speaks to my ability with women. Yeah, instead of just
- 21:41Speaker 2: being like yeah, you know what, something came up, we
- 21:44Speaker 2: had to bounce like I was like, no, we got
- 21:47Speaker 2: we got thrown up. I swear we were going to
- 21:49Speaker 2: hang out with what are the odds?
- 21:51Speaker 1: Like?
- 21:51Speaker 2: I feel like, what are the odds of it happening
- 21:54Speaker 2: a year later? Too?
- 21:55Speaker 3: I don't, I don't. I think I dodged that.
- 21:57Speaker 2: One more memory for you that either of us.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I don't think any of us remember.
- 22:02Speaker 2: The odds are astronomical.
- 22:04Speaker 3: That's why it is the same spot.
- 22:05Speaker 2: So well, it might have.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Let me tell you. Can I just say, I can't
- 22:09Speaker 3: wait till people realize what movie we're going to talk
- 22:12Speaker 3: about after this, But.
- 22:14Speaker 2: I really, well everybody, everybody that pressed play on.
- 22:17Speaker 4: This twelve angry men, they really are tied together.
- 22:23Speaker 2: That I've already noted. Start the podcast at twenty minutes
- 22:26Speaker 2: if you want to actually hear the movie talk. But
- 22:29Speaker 2: the second you're the second time, I might have been
- 22:32Speaker 2: the only one that got thrown up on now that
- 22:34Speaker 2: I think about, truly, And it wasn't it wasn't that
- 22:38Speaker 2: bad because I kept it going that night. It was
- 22:40Speaker 2: like something I think I took my shirt off. I
- 22:43Speaker 2: was wearing an undershirt, so I think I took my
- 22:45Speaker 2: shirt off and kept going that night. But it was
- 22:47Speaker 2: the same ride.
- 22:49Speaker 4: Well, you had been there before you've been ready.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and it just I was like, oh, none got
- 22:54Speaker 2: on my face this time or in my mouth, Like
- 22:56Speaker 2: I'll just wipe this off my shirt.
- 22:57Speaker 3: I kind of remember that of like the odds, but
- 23:00Speaker 3: I don't remember all three of us.
- 23:02Speaker 2: You know what it was? I was wearing a T
- 23:04Speaker 2: shirt and one of those like plaid remember those like
- 23:07Speaker 2: plaid short sleep button up shirts that were all the rage. Yes,
- 23:10Speaker 2: a Abercrombie pitch. I was wearing one of those. It
- 23:13Speaker 2: got on that shirt, so I took it off and
- 23:16Speaker 2: just like.
- 23:17Speaker 3: But you know, you've always been a beefy boy.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:20Speaker 4: I really am hopeful for the idea of somebody skipping
- 23:23Speaker 4: to twenty minutes and just the first thing they hear
- 23:26Speaker 4: is none of it got in my.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Mouth this time.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Luckily we didn't have a story where you had something, okay,
- 23:33Speaker 3: before we get.
- 23:33Speaker 2: To August is a core memory month, Yes it is.
- 23:35Speaker 3: And I don't know if this happened in August, maybe
- 23:37Speaker 3: it happened July. But I literally was talking about this
- 23:43Speaker 3: less than a month ago. I talked about the river stages.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Oh man, I missridding.
- 23:51Speaker 4: This is going to turn out to be its own episode,
- 23:53Speaker 4: and I have a lot to.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Say it is and I don't know what you remember
- 23:56Speaker 3: of it. And it was definitely because you liked a girl.
- 23:58Speaker 3: And I thought, why am I in here? Why am
- 24:01Speaker 3: I in here? Like this is not who this is
- 24:04Speaker 3: not who I am. But I remember and and I
- 24:09Speaker 3: have family who are younger than me who have listened
- 24:13Speaker 3: to these bands. They've never seen them.
- 24:15Speaker 2: I have seen them.
- 24:16Speaker 3: We have seen them. We have gone. Finger eleven did
- 24:21Speaker 3: not register.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I don't know what you were about to say, story
- 24:25Speaker 2: of the.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Year, which is part of my story. And I said,
- 24:28Speaker 3: you know, I said there was a thing, and I
- 24:31Speaker 3: don't think it even happened. The next year, I said,
- 24:34Speaker 3: me is Stony and Brett. We go to this thing
- 24:37Speaker 3: and it's and it's good. We all know these bands,
- 24:41Speaker 3: I said, But for some reason, I think, oh, I'm
- 24:45Speaker 3: going to stand up at the at the gate, right
- 24:48Speaker 3: up front, and I said, there's a buddy in my
- 24:50Speaker 3: Brett and there's a groy likes, I said. But I
- 24:54Speaker 3: turned back and I see Stony on the pedestrian bridge
- 24:58Speaker 3: and seems really piece.
- 25:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I remember that.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I got the hell out a great time.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Puddle of MUD's playing or somebody the story of the year.
- 25:08Speaker 3: It's bright before the Story of the Year when he
- 25:09Speaker 3: goes up smile, empty soul and I think finger level
- 25:14Speaker 3: was after yeah, and and and some of my wife's
- 25:20Speaker 3: family and everything know who these bands are, and some
- 25:23Speaker 3: of them were apparently still touring, which is amazed. I'm amazing.
- 25:27Speaker 3: I said, well, I did it because it's with a buddy.
- 25:33Speaker 3: He's with a growling, like I said, And then about
- 25:36Speaker 3: five minutes in a fuck, I don't really think I
- 25:41Speaker 3: should be up here anymore because I can't go anywhere.
- 25:45Speaker 3: People are pushing in the pit right, which is the
- 25:49Speaker 3: worst thing for me. I can't do that. I will say, Bretton,
- 25:53Speaker 3: you did handle it better. I don't know what came
- 25:56Speaker 3: of it, but you did handle it better.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Can I get some credit? I feel like I have.
- 26:00Speaker 3: You did when I when I tell this story, I say,
- 26:06Speaker 3: you know, I should have just followed them up there,
- 26:09Speaker 3: because that is was my kind of.
- 26:12Speaker 2: It was a great show from the pedestrian bridge.
- 26:14Speaker 3: But I just remember being pushed, and you know, as
- 26:18Speaker 3: you're pushed, it's like I'm being Yeah, I'm being beefed.
- 26:24Speaker 3: I don't know about who. I don't know about who.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Everybody's swaying to a certain way and again it's specifically
- 26:31Speaker 3: story of the Year, which is crazy to me at
- 26:35Speaker 3: this point, which I guess they still do stuff, but
- 26:38Speaker 3: I'm like, hey, it was a good time and stuff.
- 26:39Speaker 3: And I'm like, if I ever did again, because I've
- 26:41Speaker 3: talked about where we went to star Wood and we
- 26:44Speaker 3: went to the.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Buzz Fest, yes, and mud Vein.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Always I would try and stay away from it, and
- 26:53Speaker 3: it was fun, but I didn't want to be part
- 26:55Speaker 3: of it. And I'm like river Stages was the closest thing,
- 26:58Speaker 3: and I thought, Okay, I'm gonna do this, and I
- 27:01Speaker 3: think there's maybe one person like you and and and
- 27:04Speaker 3: someone else and me, but it was like maybe one
- 27:07Speaker 3: person between that guardrail and I will never forget looking
- 27:13Speaker 3: at Stony looking down at us. And later I thought, fuck,
- 27:18Speaker 3: I should have just gone out there. I really, like,
- 27:20Speaker 3: I really thought, like I'm not that big of a
- 27:22Speaker 3: fan of this, Brett would be fine whatever happens.
- 27:27Speaker 2: It would actually probably have left because.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Maybe but I'm gonna say ship to them because I'm
- 27:33Speaker 3: sitting here, like, you know, messing with Keith, who's trying
- 27:37Speaker 3: to slip his thumb up my hand, Like it's not
- 27:40Speaker 3: even about them. Anymore. I'm just like I I just
- 27:44Speaker 3: want to get through. But it was so like we had.
- 27:48Speaker 3: I remember us having such a good time, and I
- 27:51Speaker 3: have told my brother in laws, I'm like, I wish
- 27:54Speaker 3: you guys would have known these things, because literally within
- 27:59Speaker 3: a year or two they were gone. And it sucks.
- 28:02Speaker 2: River Stages, man, we are unlocked. That was for some
- 28:05Speaker 2: core August memories here with river Stages. Buzzfest was in September.
- 28:10Speaker 3: We recently talked about what's the one we did Atlanta?
- 28:16Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, river Stages. That is what you're describing
- 28:19Speaker 4: as Sunday because it was all weekends Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Sunday.
- 28:24Speaker 4: And to me, it's a lesson in what matters long
- 28:27Speaker 4: term and what sticks with you. You know what My
- 28:29Speaker 4: biggest thing about River Stages is we Friday night, got
- 28:34Speaker 4: there early. We were in the very front row on
- 28:37Speaker 4: the river to see switch Foot and somebody else.
- 28:40Speaker 2: After that, Rokes food Fighters were the Friday night we left.
- 28:44Speaker 4: We left like we left the front row for the
- 28:49Speaker 4: food fighters, and I regret that so much too now
- 28:53Speaker 4: every day.
- 28:53Speaker 3: It was fun and I remember it, but at the
- 28:56Speaker 3: time and.
- 28:56Speaker 4: I don't think we stayed the whole time. I think
- 28:58Speaker 4: we think we left mid show for them, which we
- 29:01Speaker 4: were sleepy. What were we doing sweepy?
- 29:04Speaker 2: Yeah, we were just little boys.
- 29:06Speaker 3: But here's the thing. Do you regret making me stand
- 29:10Speaker 3: up there now? As you see life has turned out
- 29:13Speaker 3: and you've met the woman.
- 29:14Speaker 4: Of your Sure, Yeah, you know what's funny, Because I ever.
- 29:17Speaker 5: Saw her, I'd say, you know what, you you know
- 29:21Speaker 5: what's what's funny is even even the person I had
- 29:25Speaker 5: interests at the time, That doesn't matter anymore.
- 29:28Speaker 4: But what even doesn't matter more than that? That was
- 29:31Speaker 4: my favorite band, the Yeah, And we waited to meet
- 29:35Speaker 4: them to like sign something, and I think I was
- 29:38Speaker 4: the last one in line and one of them, one
- 29:41Speaker 4: of them said to the other as we walked up,
- 29:44Speaker 4: don't let the door hit you where the good lord?
- 29:46Speaker 4: Split disappointed and just thought like they don't care about
- 29:51Speaker 4: this at all, and.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Give about them anymore because I don't think they do anything.
- 29:55Speaker 3: But but can we agree that was an awesome festival.
- 30:00Speaker 3: That was it was great time stages and how cheap
- 30:04Speaker 3: it was actually pretty cheap?
- 30:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean back in the day. I don't I
- 30:07Speaker 2: don't know that they could talk like that off today.
- 30:11Speaker 3: No, they wouldn't be able to do it. We literally
- 30:13Speaker 3: have talked thirty five minutes.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Thirty minutes? Yeah, are we angry men? Are we ready
- 30:19Speaker 2: to talk about twelve Angry Men? Time out? Okay, all right,
- 30:25Speaker 2: we're back. We took a pause to get all of
- 30:28Speaker 2: our nostalgia out because we are here to actually talk
- 30:31Speaker 2: about a movie. We are here to talk about nineteen
- 30:34Speaker 2: fifty seven's Twelve Angry Men. This is widely considered one
- 30:39Speaker 2: of the greatest films ever made. And I don't know
- 30:43Speaker 2: about you, guys, I had not seen it prior to
- 30:46Speaker 2: us agreeing to do this podcast.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Well you even got scared that you watched the wrong version.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Well, I didn't realize there's a ninety seven. I'm assuming
- 30:55Speaker 2: it's a remake.
- 30:56Speaker 4: Repeat, yes, with Tony Danza and some.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Other Oh no, you're you serious?
- 31:01Speaker 3: I think more.
- 31:02Speaker 2: I think, oh wow, write that down.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Jack Lemon.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Well, no, I'm just telling I'm just making a Jackleman.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Yes, that's true, Jack Lemon, isn't it.
- 31:10Speaker 2: I'm making a note for people to start the podcast
- 31:13Speaker 2: at thirty minutes instead of twenty mantes, to.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Skip about the Wilson County Fair.
- 31:18Speaker 2: To skip the Old Men, reminiscing about the good old days. Okay,
- 31:24Speaker 2: we're just burping into the microphone.
- 31:26Speaker 5: Now.
- 31:26Speaker 3: That came out of nowhere. I can't edit that out.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Tony Danza is in the ninety seven version. Is Jack
- 31:34Speaker 4: Jack Lemon, isn't it?
- 31:35Speaker 3: Which does he play the Henry fond of character?
- 31:37Speaker 4: I feel like if Jack Lemon's in anything.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Should be good. Yeah, it should be.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Am I mistaken or was he a producer on the
- 31:45Speaker 2: nineteen fifty seven version.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Jack Leman?
- 31:49Speaker 4: Okay, I don't know?
- 31:50Speaker 3: Can I? Can I share something? When I was watching
- 31:53Speaker 3: twelve Angrimen, which I had not seen before, I'm glad
- 31:57Speaker 3: I did. One of the guys and I forgot his
- 32:01Speaker 3: character's name. Is the grandpa in Problem Choeng?
- 32:05Speaker 2: Really? Yes, I had no idea.
- 32:07Speaker 3: He is the one that wears the hat for the
- 32:09Speaker 3: most part, and he's one of the last ones to
- 32:12Speaker 3: come around before the main guy. And I forgot his name,
- 32:16Speaker 3: but he is. His voice sounds the same, but it is.
- 32:21Speaker 3: It is him, And he's been in like, he's been
- 32:23Speaker 3: a ton of stuff between fifty sixties and seven. He's
- 32:26Speaker 3: been nominated like for two Oscars. But I still remember
- 32:29Speaker 3: him as the grandfather and Problem child, What.
- 32:33Speaker 2: A way to be remembered?
- 32:35Speaker 4: Jack Lemon is jur number eight? Who's the Henry Fonderot
- 32:38Speaker 4: that makes sense?
- 32:39Speaker 2: I got that?
- 32:40Speaker 3: Okay? All right?
- 32:41Speaker 2: Yeah, so I don't know where do you guys want
- 32:45Speaker 2: to start with this one, because it's kind of it
- 32:47Speaker 2: feels like a daunting task to kind of take on
- 32:50Speaker 2: one of these films that I considered one of the
- 32:52Speaker 2: greatest of all time.
- 32:53Speaker 4: I've got something because I I feel like this is
- 32:56Speaker 4: said commonly, but I think it's true. People often say
- 33:02Speaker 4: something is a perfect film. I think this may actually
- 33:05Speaker 4: be one.
- 33:06Speaker 2: I don't disagree with it.
- 33:08Speaker 3: I don't disagree with it, and I think for what
- 33:10Speaker 3: it's trying to do, it it's quite flawless. And I
- 33:18Speaker 3: right off the bat, whatever the court case they're trying
- 33:24Speaker 3: to side, having them tell it from their view is
- 33:30Speaker 3: I think highly effective. And the fact that it starts
- 33:34Speaker 3: with Henry Fonders during number eight by saying, well, wait,
- 33:39Speaker 3: and it slowly becomes something more and you are literally
- 33:45Speaker 3: told you're kind of being described what's happened?
- 33:49Speaker 2: Yeah, what is this?
- 33:51Speaker 3: What is that? The key witness? How? How you know?
- 33:56Speaker 3: How trustworthy is it? And oh the glass like there's
- 34:00Speaker 3: so many things where they're piecing together and you're piecing together, right,
- 34:05Speaker 3: But there's also the performances in general, everybody's establishing themselves
- 34:13Speaker 3: on how they feel. Henry Fond is kind of the first,
- 34:17Speaker 3: the only one that says, hey, wait, and it's not
- 34:19Speaker 3: even like I think it is.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Hey, reasonable doubts, and should we not at least have
- 34:29Speaker 2: the conversation about this? Should we not at least ask
- 34:31Speaker 2: the question? And it's it's a really interesting angle.
- 34:36Speaker 4: I don't think that I've even thought much about, like
- 34:39Speaker 4: from a big picture perspective what you just described, which
- 34:42Speaker 4: is we do not know what the case is when
- 34:46Speaker 4: the movie starts and they have to paint the entire
- 34:49Speaker 4: picture from their conversation.
- 34:51Speaker 3: And you're getting just their perspectives of it. So then
- 34:56Speaker 3: it feeds into your insight, your prejudice, How do you
- 35:01Speaker 3: see it, how do you classify it? And it's very
- 35:06Speaker 3: much relevant to today, which is always I think, is
- 35:11Speaker 3: a case where it stands, you know, it stands against
- 35:15Speaker 3: time of what it is and what they're trying to say.
- 35:19Speaker 3: And and there's a point where without giving much away,
- 35:26Speaker 3: which I mean is from the.
- 35:27Speaker 4: Fifties, buddy spoiler, but it is one.
- 35:30Speaker 3: Of those that then you kind of bring in personal
- 35:34Speaker 3: reasons and where how you see someone, and even when
- 35:39Speaker 3: the facts point left, you can't help but look right
- 35:43Speaker 3: and you want to make sense of it. You desperately
- 35:46Speaker 3: want to make sense of it. And I feel they
- 35:50Speaker 3: do such a great job. And I'll let Stony talk
- 35:53Speaker 3: because I know he said something about the way they
- 35:55Speaker 3: filmed stuff on how the characters introduced into when you
- 36:00Speaker 3: kind of get to the kind of end of the film.
- 36:02Speaker 3: But I will say that it is something that is
- 36:06Speaker 3: where I noticed it kind of immediately where I'm like,
- 36:10Speaker 3: but because of when it's filmed, they're like, well, that
- 36:15Speaker 3: could just be the actor and stuff, and some of
- 36:18Speaker 3: it is the sweat, but as it goes on you
- 36:21Speaker 3: kind of realize. And then I ended up reading some
- 36:25Speaker 3: articles about it where it's intentional and it's a as
- 36:32Speaker 3: if you had the person, their life is in your hands. Yeah,
- 36:36Speaker 3: so that pressure just keeps building and and then I mean,
- 36:41Speaker 3: obviously within the film they make comments about how hot
- 36:44Speaker 3: it is and stuff too, but I thought it was
- 36:46Speaker 3: such a nice touch because it's something as easy as
- 36:49Speaker 3: coming in and all of them can say, hey, yeah,
- 36:53Speaker 3: he's guilty. Get rid of them, and you know he's
- 36:56Speaker 3: you know, they show him he's like eighteen year old, right,
- 36:59Speaker 3: but innocent to proven guilty, And to Stony's point, it's
- 37:04Speaker 3: beyond a reasonable doubt. So if there's anything comes in,
- 37:10Speaker 3: then what is it? And what I really liked about
- 37:14Speaker 3: it even way back then is the pure honesty. And
- 37:19Speaker 3: there's several occasions where I think this sufficient answer is
- 37:25Speaker 3: I don't know, yeah, And if you say I don't know,
- 37:29Speaker 3: then that means there's.
- 37:31Speaker 2: A reasonable yeah. By the way, it didn't even intend
- 37:36Speaker 2: for this to happen, for this to be one of
- 37:38Speaker 2: the August episodes, but it is one of the sweatiest
- 37:40Speaker 2: movies I've seen in quite a while, so it kind
- 37:42Speaker 2: of fits with the time and it makes total sense. Yea.
- 37:45Speaker 2: And it is interesting to hear that because it does
- 37:49Speaker 2: kind of feel like the tension in this film and
- 37:52Speaker 2: the anxiety produced out of it does really ramp up
- 37:58Speaker 2: the deeper we get into the film. But what I
- 38:01Speaker 2: was telling Brandon earlier, Brett is that this film was
- 38:05Speaker 2: shot when they get in the room, it is a
- 38:08Speaker 2: continuous scene for like seven minutes straight of the camera
- 38:12Speaker 2: kind of sweeping around the room, and it's really interesting
- 38:16Speaker 2: to watch the characters kind of lay the groundwork for
- 38:20Speaker 2: what's to come, because they are kind of trying to
- 38:22Speaker 2: feel each other out, like what is you know? Who
- 38:26Speaker 2: are you? Who am I? Like? What do we believe? Yeah,
- 38:29Speaker 2: so there is this kind of really interesting scene and
- 38:34Speaker 2: I love the way it was shot. But also there's
- 38:37Speaker 2: another element of it where the film was shot or
- 38:41Speaker 2: that scene was shot from above eye level, where you're
- 38:44Speaker 2: kind of looking down everybody kind of feels a little
- 38:48Speaker 2: more spaced apart, a little further apart. As the film
- 38:52Speaker 2: goes on, we get more tight shots, more close ups,
- 38:56Speaker 2: and by the end, like we're really focusing on people's
- 38:58Speaker 2: faces as they talk. It's kind of designed to I
- 39:02Speaker 2: don't want to say claustrophobic, but it's really designed to
- 39:06Speaker 2: bring you into that room as the tensions rise. And
- 39:10Speaker 2: I told Brandon like, and this is naivety on my part,
- 39:15Speaker 2: but to think that this was made in nineteen fifty seven,
- 39:19Speaker 2: it's like, that's really really smart, really advanced kind of filmmaking.
- 39:25Speaker 3: And this was the feature debut of Sydney Lamett. Yeah,
- 39:32Speaker 3: so that's a big that's a big deal.
- 39:34Speaker 2: That is something that I would hear about a movie
- 39:36Speaker 2: made today and be impressed with much less back in
- 39:40Speaker 2: nineteen fifty seven, and and so it just kind of
- 39:43Speaker 2: adds that layer of depth to the film for me.
- 39:45Speaker 4: Well, And I think the reason that I miss the
- 39:48Speaker 4: piece about there painting the full picture of the case.
- 39:53Speaker 4: For you, you know, obviously it's there, but I didn't think
- 39:56Speaker 4: about it from a big perspective is because of what
- 39:58Speaker 4: you just said, is because there's so much attention given
- 40:02Speaker 4: to not only are they doing that the way that
- 40:05Speaker 4: they paint that picture, they are revealing their character a
- 40:10Speaker 4: little bit at a time for each one of them
- 40:13Speaker 4: as they go around, and so they're doing both of
- 40:15Speaker 4: those things simultaneously.
- 40:17Speaker 3: I haven't seen that much attention to details since Thomas
- 40:20Speaker 3: James The Punisher. Yeah, but yeah, it was a very
- 40:27Speaker 3: much of a nice introduction to those characters and then
- 40:31Speaker 3: start to peel away whatever their motives or prejudice is happening.
- 40:38Speaker 3: But there's also a real, i think a real substantial
- 40:44Speaker 3: part of it of it's not so much and there's
- 40:48Speaker 3: and there's definitely parts of it in the film where
- 40:53Speaker 3: it's not that the kid maybe didn't.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Do it, but you don't know.
- 40:59Speaker 3: And there's a whole part of this judicial system that
- 41:03Speaker 3: is supposed to work, and you're trusting these guys, which
- 41:08Speaker 3: happen to be all white guys, which I think, I mean,
- 41:13Speaker 3: which is another part of it. Yeah, And there's one
- 41:17Speaker 3: of them where I think one of the best scenes
- 41:19Speaker 3: is when I don't know, forgive me, I don't in
- 41:22Speaker 3: the character, but when he sits at a separate table
- 41:24Speaker 3: and everybody starts turning their back towards him, like you've
- 41:27Speaker 3: hurt enough, right, Everybody gets up and turns it. And
- 41:31Speaker 3: there's a there's a piece of that that says, Okay,
- 41:35Speaker 3: you're you're letting too much in and you're and and
- 41:38Speaker 3: you're you're trying to twist this into something that maybe
- 41:41Speaker 3: it's not, and it is that you know, innocent to
- 41:45Speaker 3: proven guilty. And I really think on scenes like that
- 41:50Speaker 3: where you kind of let your true colors show, it
- 41:54Speaker 3: doesn't always mean that's what that's what it is, and
- 42:00Speaker 3: that's what the judges during executioner issue implies and what
- 42:04Speaker 3: and what and what these people have been doing and
- 42:08Speaker 3: and there's a couple of scenes where he's kind of like, well,
- 42:10Speaker 3: you know these people and you know how they do,
- 42:13Speaker 3: and it and it is, and it's very much and
- 42:15Speaker 3: it's it's very reminiscent of of the way people talk today,
- 42:20Speaker 3: and it's it is it the fact that it is
- 42:24Speaker 3: in decades however many decades old, but there is such
- 42:28Speaker 3: a profoundness to it that people today could be accused
- 42:34Speaker 3: of it is it's just I mean, it's it's phenomenal
- 42:41Speaker 3: and and and they strip it to me lamit strips
- 42:45Speaker 3: it down to what the bear essentials are. But you
- 42:48Speaker 3: have all these different characters, even then in the fifties,
- 42:51Speaker 3: if you're going to have all these white men talk
- 42:54Speaker 3: about it, there there is there's a there's such a
- 42:57Speaker 3: connective tissue to it of who they are and who
- 43:03Speaker 3: they're they're going to affect the life, the entire life
- 43:08Speaker 3: of somebody. Is is it's so is so well done.
- 43:12Speaker 2: And I think it's a key component of Henry Fonda's
- 43:16Speaker 2: character's argument as to why we should slow down and
- 43:19Speaker 2: at least talk this through and ask some questions. Is
- 43:22Speaker 2: like there's there's a man's life that's hanging in the balance.
- 43:25Speaker 3: But and it's almost a part of like what's it
- 43:27Speaker 3: gonna hurt?
- 43:28Speaker 2: Tell me, let's let's at least right.
- 43:30Speaker 3: And then what feeds into that is slowly people start
- 43:35Speaker 3: to raise their hand, well because it's it's not it's
- 43:40Speaker 3: not so black and white.
- 43:42Speaker 2: And the thing I think I love the most about
- 43:45Speaker 2: this film is the eleven on one angle where at
- 43:49Speaker 2: the beginning everybody says guilty except for Henry Fonda's character.
- 43:54Speaker 3: It's a no thinker. It's it's and.
- 43:59Speaker 2: If you if you think about it, it's not that
- 44:03Speaker 2: the facts of the case are changing. The facts are
- 44:06Speaker 2: the facts. But throughout this discussion we kind of see
- 44:11Speaker 2: it's not more it's not that we're re examining the
- 44:15Speaker 2: facts of the case. It feels more intrinsical that these
- 44:19Speaker 2: these men are looking in at themselves. And as new
- 44:23Speaker 2: information is produced, it is we are evolving to realize
- 44:28Speaker 2: we looked at this a certain way, but it's not
- 44:31Speaker 2: like there is room for that reasonable doubt. And it
- 44:34Speaker 2: explores those biases that that people have to the like
- 44:39Speaker 2: to the point that we get to the end and
- 44:41Speaker 2: we kind of realize, Okay, maybe the answer is outside
- 44:47Speaker 2: of the framework of what how we view this like.
- 44:50Speaker 2: It changes perspectives for so many of.
- 44:52Speaker 3: These Chaly does. And I think a part and I
- 44:55Speaker 3: think to your point is it's not. It's not that
- 45:01Speaker 3: easily decided, even though we know that it's easy to
- 45:06Speaker 3: do and it's easy to classify people and say, well,
- 45:10Speaker 3: look where they look who they are, Look where they
- 45:12Speaker 3: grew up, look at their parents, look at and I
- 45:16Speaker 3: definitely think that's I definitely think that that is the case.
- 45:20Speaker 3: But I also really like that there is a step
- 45:24Speaker 3: back and little by little, like from the lady who's
- 45:28Speaker 3: the key witness to the glasses. It is very much
- 45:35Speaker 3: of a but what if she didn't? And it's just it.
- 45:40Speaker 3: And I think what hit me the most is is
- 45:43Speaker 3: that it is a simple case of they could be wrong,
- 45:48Speaker 3: and if they are.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Or it's at least it's possible not wrong.
- 45:52Speaker 3: And if it is, you can't send someone to life
- 45:58Speaker 3: or whatever the case may be. And I think it's
- 46:02Speaker 3: very powerful and no matter what year has made, but
- 46:06Speaker 3: the fact that I can watch this today and get
- 46:10Speaker 3: a total, just a total engagement of what of how
- 46:19Speaker 3: people see either the court system, how they see justice,
- 46:25Speaker 3: how they see people in general. It's important, it's in
- 46:30Speaker 3: it's it's important. And I think what adds to it
- 46:33Speaker 3: is they're telling you what part of this case is,
- 46:41Speaker 3: so as you're doing this and you're trying to connect
- 46:45Speaker 3: the pieces. You're also like, oh so this isn't concrete. Yeah,
- 46:52Speaker 3: and oh yeah, what you said isn't. And then someone
- 46:56Speaker 3: else comes in and say, yeah, but forget all that,
- 46:59Speaker 3: here's the main thing. And then they say, well, okay,
- 47:03Speaker 3: but what about this, And it's it's just it's It
- 47:09Speaker 3: reminds me a sort of what which is kind of
- 47:14Speaker 3: is on the nose as far as the title of
- 47:15Speaker 3: the film, but Philip summer Hoffmann, Amy Adams and Meryl Street,
- 47:19Speaker 3: there's a movie called Doubt, and that's what this does.
- 47:23Speaker 3: There is such a dose of doubt that how could
- 47:28Speaker 3: you go out and say, yep, you're guilty and there
- 47:35Speaker 3: and I think what adds to it? And I think
- 47:38Speaker 3: as we've grown up, there's been a lot of cases
- 47:41Speaker 3: where it seemed that they should be guilty but they're not.
- 47:47Speaker 3: So then what how how how much of a guarantee
- 47:52Speaker 3: is is some of this ship?
- 47:54Speaker 4: You know, there's something that's very pure and wholesome about
- 47:59Speaker 4: the way it approaches together because even with their biases,
- 48:06Speaker 4: maybe the biggest leap of grandeur in twenty twenty six
- 48:09Speaker 4: watching this is that everyone would come to a place
- 48:12Speaker 4: where they would say, we see it.
- 48:15Speaker 3: And we agree that probably wouldn't happen.
- 48:18Speaker 4: And like so, even those, even even the most crooked
- 48:21Speaker 4: characters in this movie come to a place of redemption.
- 48:27Speaker 4: Which that's true, that that even feels like a leap,
- 48:33Speaker 4: I don't.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Think would ever come to the realization.
- 48:35Speaker 4: Yes, and even the I was thinking about even the
- 48:39Speaker 4: name of the movie and the play. You know, they're
- 48:46Speaker 4: not all angry in the same way Henry Fonda. They're
- 48:48Speaker 4: not angry in the way that we would typically think
- 48:51Speaker 4: of anger. Henry Fonda is not rage. They're passionate. They're
- 48:55Speaker 4: all passionate for different things. There's the guy that's passionate
- 48:57Speaker 4: about going to his baseball game on time.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Which did you know that's a grandpa problem child? Is
- 49:04Speaker 3: that the same guy and he has at least been
- 49:09Speaker 3: nominated for a couple of Oscars. But as soon as
- 49:12Speaker 3: he started talking, I'm like.
- 49:15Speaker 4: Henry fondas Henry Fonda's character is passionate for doing the
- 49:22Speaker 4: right thing. And they all get in there. But you know,
- 49:25Speaker 4: some of them are passionate for we want to see
- 49:28Speaker 4: this kind of person go away.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Well, and they start connecting where he's from and everything else.
- 49:35Speaker 3: And the thing is and I think that, well what
- 49:39Speaker 3: struck me is I think we're all guilty of it.
- 49:42Speaker 3: It's almost like from who they are and where they
- 49:46Speaker 3: kind of where they're home grown, well, this is, of course,
- 49:51Speaker 3: this is what they would do. But to have that
- 49:54Speaker 3: beyond a reasonable doubt, I think is very significant. And
- 49:59Speaker 3: the way they kind of played that out and depict
- 50:02Speaker 3: it from these twelve guys is very important because there's
- 50:08Speaker 3: nothing that tells me that in some sense this has
- 50:12Speaker 3: happened where your life is on the line and it's
- 50:15Speaker 3: up to these guys, and it's up to these people
- 50:17Speaker 3: to say what flies and what doesn't and what reason
- 50:22Speaker 3: do they have? And but I do love I think
- 50:27Speaker 3: this is what kind of really kind of brings it home.
- 50:30Speaker 3: Even as Henry fond of them walk out and he
- 50:33Speaker 3: talks to somebody and they tell each other their real names,
- 50:37Speaker 3: there is just a sense of how important this system
- 50:42Speaker 3: is and that one day it might be you and
- 50:46Speaker 3: you want the same consideration that was put in with
- 50:51Speaker 3: these guys that ended up overturning where they thought it
- 50:54Speaker 3: would be a split to everybody says yeah, you know what,
- 50:58Speaker 3: it's not it, because yeah, I would want that you
- 51:02Speaker 3: know if you didn't know.
- 51:05Speaker 4: So one of my favorite movies has become A Few
- 51:10Speaker 4: Good Men.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and I love.
- 51:11Speaker 4: That movie and I've heard it described as a verbal
- 51:15Speaker 4: action movie, and I think this could be described as
- 51:18Speaker 4: the same. And this, I mean this really laid the
- 51:20Speaker 4: groundwork for movies like that with the courtroom scene, room dramas.
- 51:25Speaker 3: Now I will say, you get you get some people,
- 51:28Speaker 3: and you get someone people that don't know. I'm a
- 51:31Speaker 3: huge fan of Jack where you can you get the
- 51:34Speaker 3: guy up on that stand and he says, you need me,
- 51:39Speaker 3: don't worry about the other stuff. You you can't make
- 51:42Speaker 3: the decisions, but there is there is some truth to
- 51:46Speaker 3: it and and there is there is such a depiction
- 51:51Speaker 3: of that where it can go a certain way and
- 51:55Speaker 3: what is justice and how do you define it? And
- 51:59Speaker 3: just like you know, a Few get Men and given
- 52:01Speaker 3: that code read and then the twelve angry men with
- 52:05Speaker 3: that saying okay, does this kid deserve to die? And
- 52:10Speaker 3: does he deserve to rot? Or whatever? You know? And
- 52:12Speaker 3: based off and then I love and I forgot the
- 52:16Speaker 3: actor's name, but I love that the fact that there
- 52:18Speaker 3: is a carrot that brings into it where and because
- 52:22Speaker 3: I feel like it's it's it's such an honest thing
- 52:25Speaker 3: of you see someone that represents someone in your life
- 52:30Speaker 3: and you think, this is the way I'm gonna take
- 52:33Speaker 3: care of it, because this is the way I did.
- 52:35Speaker 4: The guy that talks about his son, yes, and this
- 52:37Speaker 4: is the.
- 52:37Speaker 3: Way, like I want to make him a man. He
- 52:39Speaker 3: was a man and he fought me in so this guy,
- 52:42Speaker 3: he doesn't have any respect for anybody. And you know what,
- 52:45Speaker 3: I'm sure that's true. I'm sure there's a lot of
- 52:47Speaker 3: people who come in that door and say, he has
- 52:50Speaker 3: no respect for this or this is the way I
- 52:52Speaker 3: came from, and depend on what generation it is, but
- 52:56Speaker 3: it's such a disservice to these to these people, and
- 53:01Speaker 3: I mean, who knows how many things have gone by
- 53:03Speaker 3: that they didn't deserve it, you know, I mean. And
- 53:07Speaker 3: that's and that's something that this film really kind of
- 53:12Speaker 3: reminds me of almost the whole time I'm watching it,
- 53:16Speaker 3: is that it's it's it's it's never a straightforward and
- 53:20Speaker 3: it's never, like I said, it's black and white, and
- 53:22Speaker 3: that's just not the way life is. And but I
- 53:25Speaker 3: haven't seen too many films of Henry Fonda, and obviously
- 53:29Speaker 3: if people know the Fonda family is.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Very much of they've done something.
- 53:36Speaker 3: This is one of his best Indy and Sydney Lament
- 53:40Speaker 3: knew exactly what he was wanting to do and how
- 53:44Speaker 3: powerful it must be for me to watch this in
- 53:46Speaker 3: twenty twenty six and think, yeah, that holds up. Put
- 53:51Speaker 3: that right now and you're good. Yeah that means that
- 53:54Speaker 3: means a lot.
- 53:55Speaker 2: I think there's a really interesting reflection on power dynamics
- 53:59Speaker 2: at play in this movie too, because when we we
- 54:03Speaker 2: we get to the beginning of this and it's eleven
- 54:05Speaker 2: on one and you hear like the guy with the
- 54:08Speaker 2: deep burly voice that is telling the soft spoken man
- 54:12Speaker 2: to pipe down to me, it kind of felt like, oh,
- 54:15Speaker 2: this is a reflection on how if we're not careful,
- 54:19Speaker 2: the most dominant personality in the room may take over
- 54:24Speaker 2: and it's not an accurate reflection of the facts which
- 54:28Speaker 2: we ultimately uncover throughout this film.
- 54:31Speaker 3: And and that guy that says like he has a
- 54:34Speaker 3: couple of things they rementioned and he ends up kind
- 54:38Speaker 3: of going fond of way, but there is like there's
- 54:41Speaker 3: a point to it, but it depends do you want
- 54:46Speaker 3: to see it that way? And if not, with some
- 54:51Speaker 3: of these characters, how much are you going to fight
- 54:53Speaker 3: for it? And I think that's that's very important, and
- 54:57Speaker 3: I think that's a that's one of the absolute I
- 55:00Speaker 3: who spectacular things about Twelve Inger Men is every single
- 55:05Speaker 3: perspective or thought or prejudice is presented in that film. Yeah,
- 55:13Speaker 3: and none of it seems that impossible to be under
- 55:18Speaker 3: and that means a lot from the fifties to I
- 55:21Speaker 3: mean that, that means a lot.
- 55:22Speaker 2: M hm.
- 55:23Speaker 4: There's also some like somewhat minor things, but just from
- 55:28Speaker 4: a storytelling aspect, the walking across the room to pace
- 55:33Speaker 4: out how long it would take to get to the
- 55:35Speaker 4: door to open, like I love.
- 55:37Speaker 2: This, Yeah, yeah, I think they're so good.
- 55:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:40Speaker 3: And there's the little things like that where they're like, well,
- 55:42Speaker 3: who cares how much it takes? But the thing is,
- 55:47Speaker 3: you're are you talking about a difference of twenty five seconds? Yeah,
- 55:50Speaker 3: because twenty five seconds means life or death with this kid,
- 55:55Speaker 3: And that's it. And I think even I'm sure as
- 55:58Speaker 3: audiences watched it in the fifties, especially as you're watch
- 56:01Speaker 3: it now, that's important because it could mean a difference
- 56:07Speaker 3: of who you think is guilty and who really isn't
- 56:11Speaker 3: and it's it's important, but that was that was a
- 56:14Speaker 3: great thing. They're like, well he has a limp, but
- 56:17Speaker 3: do this, and it's like, okay, like I love I
- 56:20Speaker 3: love the way they connected to this murder mystery without
- 56:24Speaker 3: because you're only listening to what they say.
- 56:26Speaker 4: Yep, you're not, that's right.
- 56:30Speaker 3: It's only what these men and of a certain white
- 56:34Speaker 3: men are telling you how you're going to think about it.
- 56:38Speaker 3: And Henry Fonda is our guiding light and he does
- 56:42Speaker 3: a he does a fantastic, fantastic Jim.
- 56:45Speaker 2: We've we've talked a little bit about how like stereotypes
- 56:49Speaker 2: and biases kind of play in and throwing up at
- 56:52Speaker 2: the fair. We've talked about that quite a bit today too.
- 56:55Speaker 2: But I also think there's there's something to be said
- 56:59Speaker 2: for the the assumptions that are made, like you alluded
- 57:06Speaker 2: to it a second ago, where it's like, I don't
- 57:08Speaker 2: know how many times I heard a character in this
- 57:10Speaker 2: film say well you all know.
- 57:12Speaker 3: It, yeah, and without saying certain words yeah, they're yeah,
- 57:16Speaker 3: they're kind of shouting it.
- 57:18Speaker 2: So one of the things is they say like, well, oh,
- 57:21Speaker 2: he says he's gonna kill him, I'm going to kill
- 57:24Speaker 2: you or whatever. One of my favorite scenes, maybe my
- 57:27Speaker 2: favorite scene in this entire film, is when Henry Fonda's
- 57:32Speaker 2: character gets the the guy to kind of lose his
- 57:36Speaker 2: shit a little bit and he says, I'm going to
- 57:38Speaker 2: kill you, and then he says it just it hits
- 57:42Speaker 2: so hard that surely you don't mean you'll really kill me.
- 57:46Speaker 2: As an illustration, they're so this movie does such a
- 57:53Speaker 2: good job of navigating the gray area that the reasonable
- 57:58Speaker 2: doubt concept is that that scene, in particular to me,
- 58:03Speaker 2: was like, oh, you you can't do it any better
- 58:06Speaker 2: than you just did that.
- 58:06Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, And the look like the rest of the
- 58:10Speaker 3: crew knows they see it. Yeah, OK, reasonable doubt. Right.
- 58:17Speaker 3: And I'll tell you what. When I was watching, I thought,
- 58:18Speaker 3: if Henry Fonda was wear in that Joker shirt, how
- 58:22Speaker 3: would he you know, how would he react? You know,
- 58:26Speaker 3: because I you know, I don't know if I did
- 58:27Speaker 3: the right thing or not, but if he let us
- 58:30Speaker 3: on his Joker shirt, how would that be?
- 58:33Speaker 2: You know? I, uh, that's curious.
- 58:37Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you.
- 58:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm also curious because I was thinking about this
- 58:44Speaker 2: in nineteen fifty seven. Obviously I was not alive. My
- 58:48Speaker 2: parents were only six years old. When this came out,
- 58:50Speaker 2: which is kind of wild to think about. But I'm
- 58:55Speaker 2: curious because I saw a couple of reviews mention it
- 58:59Speaker 2: how or how many people was twelve angry men like
- 59:03Speaker 2: the first glimpse into what the actual process is like.
- 59:09Speaker 2: And to think about it in that context, does it
- 59:14Speaker 2: amplify how important this film was? I?
- 59:21Speaker 3: Yes, I think so. I think is. I think it introduces,
- 59:26Speaker 3: if you haven't before, this story of just how things
- 59:32Speaker 3: can get away from you, even if you think you
- 59:35Speaker 3: are so sure, And and then it introduces your own
- 59:40Speaker 3: prejudice of who you think that person is and what
- 59:46Speaker 3: they're capable of because they're in this neighborhood or their family,
- 59:50Speaker 3: or their race, whatever the case may be. I think so.
- 59:54Speaker 3: I do think there is a certain kind of empathy
- 59:58Speaker 3: watching it today then it was in the late fifties.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: I think we do understand more. I think we also
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: get it doesn't have to be maybe that specific race,
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: but I think we also understand the way just racism works,
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: and the way that if someone looks different than you,
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: then what how do we do? How do we combat that,
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: how do we keep you from this? And how do
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: we say that this is fair? And this isn't. I mean,
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: I think there's a lot of stuff that could be
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: applied to it, but I do think there is something
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: about a film that resonates. And it doesn't matter how
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: old it is. You know what they're talking about, and
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: you know whether it's this it's the right approach or not,
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: there's something to it all. And I think it it
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: hits harder and I think you can replace this word
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: with that word and you're here, you're you're with it, right,
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: And I think that's what twelve Angry Men does. And
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: it's something again, it just.
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: It.
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: It signifies something that has always kind of haunted this
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: country and the way that we do things, in the
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: way that we think that people are guilty.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Fair enough well said anything to add to.
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: That, Brett, I was just saying, there's almost a third
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: layer in that of whether it's contextually someone in the fifties,
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: sixties seeing this to now seventy years removed. Even with
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: what Brandon was saying that hopefully we're not carrying those
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: same biases. But you hear the evidence and it's easy
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: to think, oh, well, the lady saw him so okay guilty,
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: or the person he heard someone scream.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Like, so, yeah, it's so easy.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: It all lines up, and so it even called it
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: no matter where you I think that's one of the
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: things that makes it so timeless is no matter where
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: you view it from, it causes you to kind of
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: reinvestigate those things, even in your to.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: Take that second look and say, okay, she saw it,
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: case closed, But what if it's this, what if it's that?
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: And honestly, I have done dury duty once before and
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: mine was not. Mine was not like this. I got
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: in there and slammed my hand down and say guilty.
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: And they said, we don't know we're talking about this.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: It is guilty. Yeah I was.
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: I was gonna ask which one of the jurmans best
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: represented Yah.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: Blonde hair with a c DC shirt, and I say, guilty,
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: life in prison.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: You haven't even heard the charge.
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: No I haven't. No, No, I told them I need
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: to go poop. But I wull but but for but
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: for them it is It truly is such a profound
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: thing of thinking that you know, and it's judging on
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: who you are, where you've come from, who your parents are,
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: the kids and like the guy that where your son
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: and left them and he fun I want to be
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: a man. There's so many things introduced to that that
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: I think it is certainly an element to everything you do.
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: But then the question is how do you how do
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: you judge that because you are sending someone to something,
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: and how sure are you? And if you're not that sure,
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: there's room, there's room. The thing is what I loved
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: about this movie is, and it's mentioned several times, is
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: let's discuss it. And it seems and it seems so outrageous,
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: but at the end of the day, it is one
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: of those that says, make it make sense. Then make
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: it makes sense.
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: And in twenty twenty six, how how much better off
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: would we be if we were willing to say, hang on,
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: let's think about it, yes, right, rather.
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: Than conversation Because even in the fifties, there is a
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: very much a a group that says I want to
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: go to my family, I want to catch a baseball game.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: There's not there's not that much thought behind it. But
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: sometimes it takes one person to say tell me why, yeah,
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: and you know, idiot, it's makes it makes sense, and
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: the difference it makes for one person, it's one of
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: in a strange way, it's one of the most hopeful films.
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: You yeah, because the tides turn.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: Yeah. Would you guys be surprised to learn that this
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: did not win Best Picture of that year at the Oscars?
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: No, because there's so many situations where like, yeah, something
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: should have broke back, mountain should have one instead of crashed.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: So this year it went to the bridge on the
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: river khy oh, I.
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: Never even heard of I remember that one. Oh dude,
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: I don't.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: Is Meryl Streep it?
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: No, she is, well, I don't know. Let me let
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: me take a look at it. I don't know that
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: for sure. Nineteen fifty seven. It is starring William Holden,
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: Alec Guinnis Jack Hawkins. I don't see Meryl Streep anywhere
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: on here.
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: Okay, I may be jumping ahead, or I may be
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: asking for things we aren't prepared to share. But do
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: you have like where this ranks on some like best
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: pictures of all times?
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: I bet you it's one of those that people it's
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: high I.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Know, like reading through some of the tidbits trying to
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: pull notes for this show. It is on a lot
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: of lists.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Of I know, it's on all of the master the best.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Best Films of all Time, Rotten Tomatoes. There's only sixty
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: three reviews. But where do we think it's at.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: Oh, that's it, like ninety seven ninety eight percent.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: I would guess nineties also is one hundred percent rotten Tomatoes. Yeah,
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: so and and like the rare instance where the critics
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: and the audiences is aligned one hundred percent on the
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: Tomato meters with over one hundred thousand reviews on the
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: popcorn meter ninety seven percent. So, man, I mean that
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: this really is. I don't think it's a stretch to
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: say one of the greatest films of all time. I
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: was telling Brandon before you got here, Brett, like, watching this,
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: you don't want to say anything reactionary, right, you want
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: to let things sit. I think about it for a
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: little bit, but I think this has to be among
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: the top ten movies I've ever watched.
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: It feels fantastic ensemble.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: Yeah, well, each character gets its moment in this film.
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: How rare is it?
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: Pick that and say they didn't get this and this,
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: And it.
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: Almost feels like the simplicity of it being made in
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: the fifties that there wasn't what there would be today. Yeah,
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: you talked about the expert filmmaking. But today somebody would
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: be starting the movie from the place of let's do
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: it this way, and it almost feels like the simplicity
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: is what allows that breathe ability for the character.
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: I remember I remember seeing this and thinking, I wish
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: he would have I wish he would have gotten that
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: problem shown. I wish. Yeah, yeah, but he was. He was.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: He was nominated a couple of times. I was shocked,
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: but but yeah, I agree. It's it's to stand the
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: test of time in this day and age really means something.
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: And watching it now, I was very much. There was
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: so much enthralled by each thing they said and the
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: way Henry Fonda kind of the way this character moved.
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: But then if as certain characters would express kind of
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: their true intentions, the reactions of it, and like that
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: one where everybody kind of gets up and turns their
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: back like that to me was very powerful. And the
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: fact that like they know that that's not what that's
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: not what this is, and so everybody's kind of standing
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: for something, but Henry fond is showing a braid is like,
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: let's talk about it. Tell me, and and in the
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: way that they do it, they're like he's guilty. He
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: has to be. But little by little they kind of
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: scrape it by and you're like, is it can't could
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: it be true?
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: The reasonable doubt comes into the.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: Yeah, and they're like, hey, what if he does again.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: He's like he might, yeah, but and like there's such
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: an honesty to it, of but this is now and
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: I don't think this is there's too much. And I
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: think what I love the most is that kid could
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: have done it. He could have absolutely done it. Tis
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: but you leave that film and you think they've made
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: the right decision. He should go free because there's not
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: enough behind it, and and I think, and then you
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: kind of tack on kind of the race age and
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: everything else, and you're like, you know what, it's a
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: second chance. That's that's deserved. And I'm glad that these
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: guys from all different walks of life and thoughts from
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: the moment we meet them say okay, you have you
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: have that second chance. And then you think of all
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: the people who have been wrongly convicted who have that
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: second chance, and how much it means. And then you're
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: thinking of a film in the late fifties that says
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: the same thing. It's a it's it's it's profound. Yeah,
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: it's it's absolutely it's absolutely astonishing to me.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, we've reached the end of my notes. Brett.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: Do you have any parting thoughts on twelve Angry men?
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: It's a perfect film, perfect?
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: Have you no go ahead?
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: Have you ever thought about trying to pay me back
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: for my joker shirt?
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: Hmmm? What wasn't Brett's fault? You got thrown up? All?
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: I'm sure I was following his lead, I do. Yeah,
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: Brett was a ladies man and I was like, eh.
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: Girls, maybe maybe we should like do a court case
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: for that that year.
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: Yeah, that year was my bad.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: It was your fault.
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: It was thank you for your honesty and vulnerability.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: We were at We were at that gate because of me.
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: And you were you were you were focused on someone.
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, yeah.
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: I always I'll be honest in our younger days, I
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: always assume it was because we tried to We tried
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: high school and college, you know.
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: We tried to court people like they did in like
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: the early like nineteenth century.
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: Yeah, well, gentlemen, the problem is is that it just
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: it didn't work.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: That didn't go over.
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: Gals didn't gals didn't like it that much, we all
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: landed where we needed to be.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: Much like the Jurors and twelve Angry.
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: Bingo when they walked and I I like the touch
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: of that that one character and they tell each other
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: that their real name he walks off. It's a nice touch.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: I like that. Yeah, that's going to do it for
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: this episode of movie review. Rewind then as you can
