- 0:57support of our listeners. Thanks so much for all your support. Now it's
- 1:00time to get into today's episode. Uh. This one is called the Uncut
- 1:07Canary Metal. Well, you're listening enjoyment John Lund as Johnny, Oh,
- 1:17how back can you get to Beverly Hills, California? Why You've got to
- 1:21find an uncut canary. Let's take that again slowly. It's a diamond,
- 1:26Johnny, A rough and cut orange yellow diamond they call a canary where he's
- 1:30eighty nine carrots. That's enjoyed by edbron five thousand dollars. Pretty expensive.
- 1:37Bird was more to the points, took wing sometime last night and hasn't been
- 1:41seen since a Johnny, I don't see what I can do right here.
- 1:53I'd like to take a few seconds to talk about dreams. You know,
- 1:57aycologist seller, the dreams are one of the most common forms of escape from
- 2:02the everyday world. But what would you think if you woke up one morning
- 2:07and read in the paper that the president had appointed an elephant to the cabinet?
- 2:12As I agree, that is a ridiculous question, and it doesn't really
- 2:15have anything to do with animals in politics. Actually it's a question of memories.
- 2:23I was thinking of the Secretary of State when I asked this, and
- 2:25you will have to agree that with all of the varied and difficult jobs he
- 2:29has to do, the Secretary of State would have to have the memory of
- 2:32an elephant. The Secretary's biggest job, of course, is managing our country's
- 2:38foreign affairs for the president. Since the president can't be in all the foreign
- 2:44countries at the same time, he sends ambassadors and ministers to the various capitals
- 2:50and sets up consular officers in the big commercial centers of the world to assist
- 2:54the Secretary of fate. Then, when questions arrived, the officials of foreign
- 3:00countries get together with the American ambassadors or ministers or councils, depending on the
- 3:07country and the type of problem, and they iron out their difficulties. Of
- 3:12course, there are many treaties in international laws with guides these conferences, with
- 3:17their health and the work done by our state's department, we're pretty certain of
- 3:23getting along all right when we tour foreign countries or have business dealings with them.
- 3:29In other words, whenever we have dealings of any sort with countries other
- 3:34than our own, it is the Secretary of Faith and his department who acts
- 3:39as our intermediary. Express accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Daughter to Home Office
- 3:59Eastern Indemnity, an insurance company, Hortford, Connecticut. The following is an
- 4:02accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Untucked Canary matter. Expensi count atom
- 4:12one one dollars and sixty cents airfare and internetals between Hortford and Los Angeles,
- 4:17California. Expensive count ADAM two three dollars and seventy five cents cab fare from
- 4:23the International airport to a rich looking jewelry store in Beverly Hill. Inscribed on
- 4:28the door and what looked like a thin line of pure platinum was a single
- 4:31name, Johannes. According to Harris and this has been the last known nesting
- 4:36place of the uncut canary. Whoever Johanna may have been, I doubted that
- 4:53it was the tall, artistic type of the heavyweight padded shoulders, who was
- 4:57looking down his long aristocratic note, said yes, I'd like to see yo,
- 5:02Hannah. Now I ask who you are. My name is Dollar Insurance,
- 5:06and that's together. Will you hear about the men after race can if
- 5:12that's the full name of the listing diamond. Yes, i'd least You've got
- 5:15to come back in the morning, miss Dollar. Any particular reason why I
- 5:19was still trying day, Madam your Hannah. She's quite fatigued. Nobody's too
- 5:24tired to spend a few minutes trying to collect one hundred and twenty five thousand
- 5:27dollars in the morning, mister Dollar, I'm starting, Madam, your Hannah
- 5:30will be pleased with the view you then maybe I want to be in the
- 5:31mood. Then, oh, really it's a possibility. That's your fair.
- 5:36No, not the way I see it, Madame Johannah is claiming a lot.
- 5:41He's entitled to her own opportunity to slam the door in my face,
- 5:45mister daughter, and I think this opportunity to open it instead. I thought
- 5:49you were resting in your office. I did not wish to how the next
- 5:54time I was thank you enough to do to overn is Dennis and your desire
- 5:57to perspected my hands at the extent of my dent. Come different seage to
- 6:02Dada. Once you sit down, said Dada, thank you. You went
- 6:14to discuss your minister as canary. Mister Dada, But I can true about
- 6:17it, or you might begin by telling me it's history. I purchased in
- 6:21real so I'm a local broker down there a year ago les September, over
- 6:27a year ago. You find something surprising about that. You've got a pretty
- 6:31large investment in the uncut stone. It's a long time to have it just
- 6:35sitting around, isn't it. They couldn't have a don deside. It's a
- 6:40very delicate matter, mister Dada. Months must have been studying with planning,
- 6:45decise, manner and y to be family cut and polished. Chris cleavage of
- 6:50such a stone to enhance its value two times old. Even very exclasage could
- 6:56prove disaster. How is that that is at its lightly thick? They close
- 7:03to them to fly into a hundred dick A little lesson my father learned.
- 7:09I'm twenty five years ago with a stone similar to the canaries. I do
- 7:14nothing can to make the same stick. M hm. Why don't you first
- 7:18notice that the thing which was nine thirty last night, Carter, and I
- 7:24can't got her to watch the flute of the stone. And you were going
- 7:27to have a cut last night. We have to have define its time and
- 7:30cut us in the world working here at our spears and hunts. Lessons for
- 7:35having me to we mp my father the forman for over second years. I
- 7:41see. And when you came down here carta opened the ball, canary was
- 7:46gone Carter as a combination, yes, anyone else it off unt and the
- 7:54cut was the ball touched in any way any attempt made to break intow No,
- 7:59I was down the number of suspects. No, it couldn't possibly be
- 8:03one of min Sorry, I would be willing to speach with. Well,
- 8:07you wouldn't be the first to make a mistake about something like that. Oh
- 8:09you're gonna have not be sutilize sided. But you couldn't say that doing all
- 8:15the years. You're oh sure, go ahead, yes, oh, no,
- 8:26thank you. I would send them something wrong that it does fear,
- 8:37he said. If I would send the police over to his house immediately,
- 8:41you would give him the uncustomary I put him a car the Chief Anderson or
- 8:50the Beverly Hills Police Force, and a few minutes later, Lieutenant Hankins if
- 8:54his office came by and picked me up. I'll come here on this hang
- 9:03you. You're still a homicide on. Yeah, but the hand of robberies
- 9:07that out with a call when this latest development. The Chief sent me out
- 9:09to wrap this up and see you on your way disappointed? Do you know
- 9:15better than that, I'm always glad to see you. Let's wait a quick
- 9:18ending to along tip Tella, No, I won't complain. Why should you're
- 9:22cutting sapling time? You'll get two full days pay for a few minutes work.
- 9:26Not bad jealous at me? You Joran boys can have it rather work
- 9:31on the part. Maybe it doesn't pay as well, but I know I
- 9:35can figure on a check every two weeks. Hang on, we turn here,
- 9:41trouble making. That tune's back at an angle. That way, it's
- 9:45not deleting to figure it you, Hannah, there's a woman who's running the
- 9:50sweat out of a man or. We've got an eye out for a fast
- 9:54buck. I don't think she's going to be too happy to get that uncut
- 9:58canary back. Why how the rumor around town is that it can't be cut,
- 10:03claws in it, or the stone's clear enough for some of my dust
- 10:07shape blown? Can't be split clean? Oh? Stones lable to break in
- 10:11the dust that the tide to clean it. Do you think that was wrong
- 10:13with the uncuscenary. He's at it hanging around his shop for over a year
- 10:18and a half, but at a right way under the market. There's got
- 10:20to be some reason for it. Huh. How much you figure the stone
- 10:24would be worth if it could split? Maybe a quarter of a million,
- 10:28give or take a little easier to show that way too. This way your
- 10:33money is tied up in it, They say, she's type for cash.
- 10:37I don't know what you mean. No, let's here worrying on ours and
- 10:43they don't. There's house. Let's go in and get it. What do
- 11:03you think that doesn't seem feel anxious to turn it over now? Stors run
- 11:09no lights inside. Let's try to back right here that I'd like a car
- 11:26motor running somewhere in the garage. Maybe there's a garage shout of lights on
- 11:31inside the doors, clothes come on, no easy job to wrestle some two
- 11:41hundred pounds of dead weight up from behind the wheel of a car, and
- 11:45I'm an oxide to fill the garage. And I finally managed it. Oly
- 11:54here right, Yeah, yeah, that'll do it, Adolph Biers. Yeah,
- 12:07since she won't tell us where an uncut canary is now, Yeah,
- 12:11it's just since she couldn't have told Johanna only fifteen minutes ago either. While
- 12:20Lieutenant Hankins waited for the homicide boys to arrive, I walked down at the
- 12:26corner drug store and tried to make some phone calls. I was phenomenally unsuccessful.
- 12:31There was no answer at the jewelry store, at Johanna's home, or
- 12:33at the bachelor apartment of the obnoxious mister Carter. Expect the Count Adam three
- 12:39a dollar and seventy five cents cab fare from the corner drug store to the
- 12:43residence of Johanna's other diamond cutter, Hans Fleutsman. What is it? What
- 12:58is it? Are you? Hans? Question? Of course I am,
- 13:01of course, and you must be from outre. Let me have it,
- 13:03this one, this one, do you hear? I think you've made some
- 13:05kind of a mistake. That's your pleasment. My name is Dollar, I'm
- 13:09an insurance and that's together. I'm not interested in your name, young man.
- 13:11I just want to lens from outBut from my reflect m to lenten from
- 13:16insurance investigator. Is that what you said in true? That's right, it's
- 13:20a present. I want to ask you a few questions. Question question,
- 13:24what kind of questions about the mean as your eyes? Canary? What did
- 13:28you want to do about insurance investigator? Here? What do you want to
- 13:33know about Can we talk about it inside? In fact? Oh yes,
- 13:37oh yes, coming thanks to police, all I know about it? Why
- 13:46are you coming around passing me? Why don't you question autom Yes first love
- 13:50you think you had something to do? Didn't say that? Just ask you
- 13:52why you didn't question Adolf theres is dead. It's a pleason dead. Other
- 13:58said that's right. Wait wait whatever he might have been murdered. Maybe somebody
- 14:09wanted to get the canary from him. Nobody could have fluted quarter for them.
- 14:13They didn't. What makes you so sure, mister pless? Why when
- 14:20I told the uncout canary? You know, many great men have attained the
- 14:37highest office in our land, the presidency of the United States? Can you
- 14:41guess the name of this man? During the Black Horse War in eighteen thirty
- 14:46two, he volunteered for service and was made captain of his company. As
- 14:50a member of Congress in eighteen forty seven, he was opposed to the Mexican
- 14:54War. He also opposed the Kansas Nebraska Bill, which favored the extension of
- 15:00lavery. During this time, he was offered the governorship of the Oregon Territory,
- 15:03but refused it. Over six feet tall and not particularly good looking,
- 15:09he was known for his dual sense of humor. If you don't have his
- 15:13name by now, here's an important clue. His unexpected acceptance of an invitation
- 15:20to attend the dedication of the Soldier Cemetery was responsible for one of the greatest
- 15:24speeches in our history. Who was he? Abraham Lincoln, sixteenth President of
- 15:31the United States? His life is part of your American heritage. Good old
- 15:41Harry, What a host. When Harry throws a party, nobody goes there.
- 15:46Here, let me freshen up that drink. Good Old Harry is such
- 15:50a great host. Holcome Bill and Gee, I want to go home right
- 15:56now. I don't care. I want to go right now. Come Bob
- 16:00had a little trouble driving home. And how come everybody who felt so good
- 16:07last night feels so bad this morning. Maybe good old Harry is not such
- 16:12a great host after all. Maybe good old Harry is a pusher, a
- 16:18neighborhood pusher. Harry pushes an alcohol So if you serve alcohol, please don't
- 16:23be a pusher. And if you're a guest, don't let good old Harry
- 16:27or anyone else push you into drinking more than you want. A public service
- 16:32message from this station and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. And
- 16:41now with our thought, Don Lund, we bring you the second act of
- 16:47your truly Johnny Dollar. After his astounding statement about stealing the uncut canary to
- 17:04hear her for a volume of Old Hans Platman closed up completely. He refused
- 17:10to say anything about anything, and two and a half hours later at the
- 17:19Duberly Hills Police station the situation was unchanged unless Plusman talks, so we'd pick
- 17:25up something else. We won't be able to hold him along. And I
- 17:26don't think he's the only one who's clamming up about that canary. Yo,
- 17:30Hannah, I'd like to know who really call her on the phone when she
- 17:33sent us up to eight off Beer's house. We'll find out we locate her.
- 17:37She's not at her home at the office though, no sign of the
- 17:40stone that there's nothing. A couple of the boys too, going through the
- 17:42place. It's done a pless too angan uh okay, Doc, thank Otopsey
- 17:52searching my posting beers now looks like Hanside all right, and he blows stuck
- 17:56in the back of his head, knocks, offering eight to there'll be no
- 18:00monoxide in the bloodstream. I won't cover that. Going somewhere, Yeah,
- 18:03the evening's still young. I might as well try to earn some of that
- 18:07big money you think I'm getting paid for this job. Explain to count at
- 18:18them four two twenty five cents cap there from Beverly Hills to the apartment of
- 18:22Johanna's a system, mister Charles Carter. Doors open, stripped down to a
- 18:34pair of shorts. Carter was standing on his head at one end of the
- 18:37room, heels resting lightly against the wall. A few dollars. What's the
- 18:44idea of that? Was the headstand? Tones up? The system reverses the
- 18:48blood blow. Good tonic for rejuvenating muscular tissues, strengthening the internal organ You
- 18:55don't say he should try sometimes most beneficial, amazing? What do you want
- 19:00here? Dollar? Why? Oh? Well, I was just wondering where
- 19:04you were earlier this evening, after you left the shop down to the beach,
- 19:08exercise there for an hour every evening. Why out off theres is dead
- 19:15bro not fried, overweight, disgusting, poorly cared for. A body can't
- 19:22belt the machinery of life. Dollar, it'll refuse to funk me. In
- 19:26this case, the refusal wasn't voluntary. Oh so that's why you wanted to
- 19:30know where I was. So now you know Johanna, I wasn't with you?
- 19:37Was she no? Having an idea where she? Oh? Now you're
- 19:40going too far, dollar? Oh why? Johanna's the epitome of all womanhood,
- 19:45a gentle, delicate soul. I'll not have him aligned by you or
- 19:48anyone else. Not clear? Oh sure, but I'd still like to know
- 19:52where she was. I tell me, Carter, how often you do that
- 20:00headstand stunt? Twice a day? And how long do you keep it up
- 20:03each time? Thirty four minutes? Remarkable. I hit a drug store and
- 20:15tried to call Johanna's residence, but there was no answer. A call to
- 20:18Lieutenant Hankins brought the information that Plestmann was still refusing to talk, and that
- 20:23they'd finished searching both his house and that about off Bears. The uncut canary
- 20:29was still among the missing. I was drinking a cup of coffee at the
- 20:37fountain when I suddenly remembered something hands Plessman had said. I grabbed the yellow
- 20:42phone book and started looking for an optical lens manufacturer whose name was Albert.
- 20:47I found one Albert shone Back. Both an office and a residence phone were
- 20:52listed at that hour of the morning. The choice wasn't too tough to make,
- 20:57you, Mina. I have been making boblical lenses for you, and
- 21:02I wonder for many year now for her father before her. Would you hold
- 21:07at this hour of the night with your Christian and did you ever make lenses
- 21:10for refactater? Shn back, Yeah, hands it was hands Batsman, of
- 21:15course, has Placeman. Would you mind telling me what a refract parmeter is
- 21:18used for? You are asking the Christians of uses? Oh, you do
- 21:23not even know. It's important to Shane back, Yeah, for Boom,
- 21:27important for you, for your honor. Both of us. So all right,
- 21:32and I will tell you it is for measuring the bend of light for
- 21:36a precious stone with the mirrors lenses or the scales machine measures the stones index
- 21:42of my question or obtaors exactly what the stories? You understand what I'm saying?
- 21:51Oh, I think I get the general idea. Yeah, could you
- 21:53use one to determine the proper cleavage of a diamond? Yeah? What is
- 21:59happening? I can never see. It is possible if there were some interior
- 22:07floor, some imperfect strata of Christie Line spoke heure let could possibly up.
- 22:14Yeah, but you asked what does always have to do with you? Are
- 22:18I'm not quite sure. Thanks for the Sean b expense A gun atom five
- 22:30three dollars and sixty cents cab there the six twenty one West Canyon Road Drive
- 22:34at somewhere near the top of the Santa Monica Mountains, about two miles and
- 22:37a half from Sunset Boulevard. I just come in playing for bed. Yeah,
- 22:45so I noticed. Let me do that. Please tell me quickly why
- 22:48you are It's about the rumors. Yeah, I understand that Jeweler's role believes
- 22:56that Johannas is heading for the financial rocks. You came up here tonight to
- 23:02discuss with me the financial status of my business, mister Dollar, Not exactly
- 23:06well then, But suppose the rumors were true, and you're hard up for
- 23:11cash with one hundred and twenty five thousand dollars tied up in an uncut diamond
- 23:15and can't be sold until it's cut, and can't be cut because it'll fly
- 23:21into bits other nonsense. Well, I'm glad to hear it. Why it
- 23:25removes any motive you may have had for stealing the uncut canary yourself? Better
- 23:29leave no, mister Dollar, you haven't denied it. You've gone to carve
- 23:32for that. Adolf Bears must have gone pretty far too. Difference, it's
- 23:37beyond me, beyond Audolf now too. Or maybe you haven't asked yourself why
- 23:42somebody wanted to murder him? My gosh, nudic you didn't know, how
- 23:49could it have? It's wondering? But why? Well might say, either
- 23:56Adolf took the stone and somebody got it away from him, or he knew
- 24:00who did steal it and was going to talk. Either way, they results
- 24:04the same. It's not quite as unbelievable as your statement that you talked to
- 24:10him on the phone when actually he'd been dead for two hours. No,
- 24:15it is time for usually together. No further explanation, none. Okay.
- 24:23Oh, by the way, did you know Hans Plasman had confessed to stealing
- 24:27McNary? Did I suppose you think that's unbelievable too? My canis arranging his
- 24:33release on a writ of habeas crosses at the very moment. Oh, that's
- 24:37very interesting. You're sure you don't want to change your story about that supposed
- 24:42phone call from adult dude. I do not. I didn't think so.
- 24:55The lack of transportation from Kenyon Road drive back to Beverly Hills didn't bother me.
- 25:00The walk would give me a chance to clarify my ideas about the uncut
- 25:03Canary manner. It took me a little less than an hour, and I
- 25:15got back to Sunset Boulevard at an all night gas station, where I called
- 25:18the tenant Hankins. That's right, Dollar Haunts Blestman was sprung about forty five
- 25:22minutes ago. You put a tail on him. Yeah, he went straight
- 25:25home expensive gun atom six a dollar and sixty five cents cab fare. Again.
- 25:33It took about fifteen minutes to get the hand to Blessman's house. Yes,
- 25:56yes, who is it? Hello? It's the plesman. I sho
- 26:00that insurance man? What why would you want to know? Have you cutage
- 26:03yet? Mister Plessman? It's just about when you interrupted me? Do you
- 26:07mind if I watched you finish the jam that's coming coming? Thanks? Can
- 26:15you right? Didn't you? Wow? Looks like you've got a pretty capable
- 26:22assistant, Hans. Yes, I think our partnership in diamonds cutting will quite
- 26:26success. But of course it will. Of course you reflect will make the
- 26:30difference who's out of that? But he wouldn't listen, But because your head,
- 26:33in his own stubborn way, he would have smashed the stone, just
- 26:37as he did twenty years ago. So at off, there's the cutter who
- 26:41smashed your father's stone, are yo, Hannah? It is quite right ruin
- 26:45ruin him and Hils. Couldn't let that happen to my little Johannah like my
- 26:48own daughters, to know, couldn't let athers do that to her too?
- 26:52Couldn't? So you took the diamond to keep out off from cutting it.
- 26:56That's my thoughts, Sagana. I wouldn't have listened to Hans the frowning I
- 26:59was going to let adults go ahead with it. Wouldn't listen to me,
- 27:03who was like her own father. So I had to take the stone.
- 27:06I was going to cut it, professor Hannah, and give it back to
- 27:07you as to get any of you hand. All the others saw me getting
- 27:11ready. He was going to stop me so he could cut the diamond himself.
- 27:17You shouldn't have done that, Arabs shouldn't have done that. I had
- 27:22to stop him. But we have work to do. Put the stone under
- 27:29cut, your Hannah. That's it. That's it now, quite the seeably
- 27:33it's right, and didn't lie. That's it. That's it now, quite
- 27:38firmly, but without pressure, not not too much pressure. So thank your
- 27:47head. They've done it, of course, but it had to be done
- 27:52my way. All the hard stomater showed it properly, probing fool. Others
- 27:57would have granted into bit bit. Well, I guess everything is all right
- 28:02now for you, Johamma. I could see if your business all right?
- 28:06Are you? Young men? No trouble about the stone now, no trouble,
- 28:10no no hand, there's no trouble about the stone. Do understand how
- 28:15I couldn't let anything happen to my yohamma, not to my little baby.
- 28:18Oh he's stone beautifully once, I haven't crept polished, said, he's stone.
- 28:27Don't you feel well? It's all right, I'm I'm a little we
- 28:33can shaky, that's all. I can't understand it. We shake it like
- 28:37this ridiculous? Are I think I lie down for it? Need sure,
- 28:42go ahead? I can't understand it. Shaky and tod and I you know,
- 28:51Yeah, so I was hand and not out of who called you on
- 28:53the phone. Yes, he told me that ge't hidden the stone in my
- 28:57house. It's not getting his killed that dolls. But don't chill him to
- 29:04that after his release from day and there they are, that's what wants to
- 29:11miss you guys. I'm cut canary gift uns. They accomplish everything he wanted
- 29:19to accomplish for it. Don't trether like smashed the story if the dusk before
- 29:27the toy began it didn't want to skift funds expensing gout out him seven one
- 29:48hundred and seventy nine dollars and twenty five cents the airfare and incidentals from w
- 29:51Hills, California, back to Hartford. Expense account total three hundred and seventy

- 30:41Truly Johnny Dollar has been a presentation of the United States Armed Forces Radio and
- 30:47Television service Welcome Back. Well. I found those up the public service announcements
- 31:02on this one fascinating. Uh, you know, baing from West having lived
- 31:07all my life out here other than some traveling when I was young. M
- 31:12I you know, I was surprised to learn about Lincoln having been offered the
- 31:18governorship of the Organ Territory. Not something I learned about. I knew about
- 31:22Lincoln and it's you know, it's great because you know, if you've if
- 31:27you've you know, read or studied politics and history much, you know,
- 31:32you've heard quite a bit about Lincoln. And when I heard the black Hawk
- 31:36War, immediately I knew it was Lincoln. But that was a new one
- 31:40on me. Also, the pushers, that was a pretty uh interesting public
- 31:47service announcement. Um, I'm not you know not you know, having been
- 31:53to a lot of parties where alcohol was present, not certain of that is
- 32:00a modern day problem, but it says something that they thought enough to do
- 32:06a public of service announcement on it. Overall, I thought this was There
- 32:09were quite a few interesting turns to make this mystery really working. Another great
- 32:15performance by Virginia Grake. You know, and I'm working if you've been following
- 32:21over Great Detectives dot net on the list of the most essential people in radio,
- 32:30and I've you know, and I'm going from most important to least important.
- 32:35I'm already up into the to the number fifties and i still haven't written
- 32:40about I'm going from least important to most important. So we started an hundred
- 32:45working up to the fifties now, and I still haven't found the right spot
- 32:50for Virginia Grake. She definitely was such a key figure in making radio work
- 32:55and making it what it was, so always glad to hear her speaking of
- 33:01public service announcements. And I will remind you that election day is next Tuesday,
- 33:06so I do encourage everyone to become informed and then go in to cast
- 33:10their ballots if they've not already. However you vote, to encourage you to
- 33:15do that. All right, Well that will do it for today, well
- 33:20if you're in the United States, but that will do it for today.
