- 0:06simplest things? Yeah, me too.
- 0:09And more times than I can count. Well, today we're going to be
- 0:12talking about the five things people without Parkinson's will
- 0:15never truly understand and stick around to the very end because
- 0:19#5 is something I've never shared publicly.
- 0:21Plus, I've got a pricism that might just flip the way you
- 0:25think about it. Welcome to Living with

- 0:57truths. And a quick shout out to my

- 1:06out these episodes like 3 * a week.
- 1:10Plus Sunday is our live on YouTube with my buddy Brian.
- 1:13So don't miss that. But before we dive in, drop a
- 1:17drop me a comment below. What's the one thing that you
- 1:20wish people without Parkinson's understood about your life?
- 1:24I might just feature it on an upcoming episode.
- 1:26And remember, I read and I reply to every single comment, so
- 1:30don't be shy. All right, Well, let's get into
- 1:32it. Here's the number one thing, or
- 1:34or here's the first thing that I wish people with Parkinson's
- 1:37would know, but they'll never know.
- 1:39It's the invisible battle inside your body.
- 1:42Now, this one started early for me, before I even had my
- 1:45official diagnosis. On the outside, I looked fine.
- 1:48I was working, smiling, still showing up to meetings like
- 1:51nothing was wrong, but inside it was like my body was running
- 1:55Windows 95. Well, someone else had upgraded
- 1:57to the latest MacBook. My muscles felt stiff, my energy
- 2:02was drained and every move took more thought than it should.
- 2:06You know I remember this one meeting where I kept adjusting
- 2:09my chair, trying to hide how rigid my arm was.
- 2:12Afterwards I remember this Co worker of mine.
- 2:14They said, you know, you seem distracted today.
- 2:17And I laughed and I said, yeah, I'm just tired, you know?
- 2:20And inside I was thinking, if only you knew how hard I was
- 2:23fighting just to sit still. The hard part is that when
- 2:28people can't see it, they don't always believe it.
- 2:32They think you're just being tired or you're just off a
- 2:34little. And that misunderstanding can be
- 2:36just exhausting as the symptoms themselves.
- 2:40And now, so you've had something like that happen.
- 2:42Do you drop the word invisible in the comment?
- 2:44Just so we know we're in this together?
- 2:47Invisible in the comment. OK, here's the second thing.
- 2:50The second thing that they're just don't get.
- 2:52It's how exhausting simple things can be.
- 2:56You know, about five years in, I had a day where I went to just
- 2:59make a sandwich. Just a sandwich, bread, meat,
- 3:01cheese, nothing fancy. By the time I got it made, I was
- 3:05leaning on the counter like I just run a marathon.
- 3:08You know, Parkinson's fatigue isn't like, normal tired.
- 3:11Normal tired is. I stayed up too late last night.
- 3:14Parkinson's tired is someone secretly gave me, gave up the
- 3:18gave up gravity on earth and forgot to tell me.
- 3:22And it's not just sandwiches. Laundry, walking across the
- 3:25parking lot, even brushing your teeth can feel like an Olympic
- 3:28event some days. I actually joked with Carmen
- 3:31once. If making this grilled cheese
- 3:34doesn't qualify me for a gold medal, then I want a refund.
- 3:37She rolled her eyes, but she also handed me the spatula.
- 3:41And after explaining after and explaining that kind of fatigue
- 3:44to someone who has, who has never felt it, it's like trying
- 3:47to describe a brand new color that they've never seen.
- 3:50It's that difficult. And by the way, if you like this
- 3:54kind of real talk about Parkinson's, hit that subscribe
- 3:56button. It's free.
- 3:57And it tells YouTube that that conversations like this matter.
- 4:01OK, here is #3 the third the story #3 the mental energy it
- 4:08takes just to move now. For me, it started around year 7
- 4:13or 8, or even before that. Walking, turning, picking
- 4:16something up. Things that used to be automatic
- 4:19now require this entire whole mental checklist.
- 4:23Like, where's my balance? How's my timing?
- 4:25Will my foot crash? Is the floor slippery?
- 4:28Do I look like I'm wobbling? It's like having a a Nassau
- 4:32launch launch sequence running in the back of your brain, like
- 4:35321 step. You know, I once stood at a
- 4:40doorway at a conference completely overthinking how to
- 4:43step through without freezing. People are behind me waiting.
- 4:47So I just blurted out, sorry folks, just buffering got a
- 4:50laugh. But inside I wasn't joking
- 4:52beside it. Inside I was just, I was
- 4:54petrified. And hey, it's crazy.
- 4:58But this should and could and probably does sound familiar.
- 5:02And if it sounds familiar, hit that like button for me so more
- 5:05people can see the real set of Parkinson's.
- 5:07But we don't pull punches here. And when people, just people
- 5:12without Parkinson's, they just say just relax.
- 5:14Or if only it were that easy, right?
- 5:17It's almost funny. It's almost funny.
- 5:19Just relax, OK? I'll just relax and it's all
- 5:22better, right? And just to be clear, everything
- 5:25that we're talking about today comes from Parkinson's itself.
- 5:27It's not just getting older or, you know, being out of shape.
- 5:31So if that's all it is straight out from Parkinson's, thank you,
- 5:35Parkinson's. Thanks, Parkinson's.
- 5:36All right #4 your good days don't mean that you're cured.
- 5:42I've had people see me on a good day and they.
- 5:44And I've actually heard this before.
- 5:46Wow, you look great. Are you better now?
- 5:49Nope. Parkinson doesn't take a
- 5:50vacation day, and a good day is just that.
- 5:53It's a good day. You know, I once had a friend
- 5:56pat me on the back and say, looks like they fixed you.
- 6:00I wanted to reply. Yeah, the warranty was up, so
- 6:03they patched me, you know? Instead, I smiled and said
- 6:05thanks because honestly, they meant well, but it was just
- 6:09crazy. This people just can't and won't
- 6:12get it. So here's the truth.
- 6:50OK, here is the fifth thing that I just people with part who
- 6:55don't have Parkinson's will never get.
- 6:57And this is the one that I've never shared publicly.
- 7:00This is the one I talked about in the beginning.
- 7:01This one is personal and honestly a little tough to
- 7:05admit, but overtime I realized that every social event, every
- 7:10outing, every meeting, I was running like quiet calculations
- 7:15in the background. Will I freeze in the doorway?
- 7:18Will I spill my drink? Will I forget the word I need
- 7:21mid sentence? It wasn't just about managing
- 7:24symptoms, it was about managing embarrassment before it even
- 7:27happened. And the truth is that constant
- 7:31background scanning has probably kept me from doing certain
- 7:34things or going certain places. You know, sometimes the fear of
- 7:38what might happen is worse than what it actually does and it's
- 7:43exhausting. It's exhausting trying to
- 7:46calculate everything and pre think everything and pre worry
- 7:50about what might happen and not might happen.
- 7:53Now, I've never said that one out loud before.
- 7:54I but I'm saying it now because you know, if you felt the same
- 7:58way, I want you to know it's OK. It's OK to admit it and it's OK
- 8:02to start pushing back, push back against it and even little tiny
- 8:07steps forward make all the difference.
- 8:11With Parkinson's, the things that people don't understand
- 8:14aren't just symptoms. They're the choices, the hidden
- 8:17calculations and the invisible battles that nobody else sees.
- 8:22All right, you've made it this far.
- 8:23So you've unlocked my Bryce system for this episode, and
- 8:27here you go. With Parkinson's, your strongest
- 8:29muscles aren't in your body. They're in your ability to keep
- 8:32showing up when nobody else sees the fight.
- 8:36So let me ask you, which one of these five hit you the hardest?
- 8:40Or what would you add to the list?
- 8:42Drop in the comments and remember I read everyone if this
- 8:45episode connected with you, give it a like and share it with
- 8:48somebody who could use it and subscribe so you don't miss
- 8:51future videos. And if you want a place where
- 8:53you can talk about this 24/7 with people who truly understand
