- 0:00Give us your thoughts. Why should I care about the
- 0:01baseball play offs? Well, traditionally having the
- 0:04first round buy has not been a huge advantage.
- 0:08When you look at some of the previous champions, a lot of
- 0:12them have come out of the wild card round.
- 0:15So I, I guess for me, I'm just waiting because you have the
- 0:18Phillies and you have the Dodgers who have the first round
- 0:22buy in the National League. You have the Yankees and you
- 0:25have the Indians. I'm sorry, the Guardians.
- 0:28Whoa. Whoa, whoa, you can't say that
- 0:33word in. The the Guardians, the Cleveland
- 0:36Guardians who have a bye in the first round in the American
- 0:40League. I personally think it's going to
- 0:42be Philly or LA or New York coming out of the American
- 0:47League. Those teams have kind of been
- 0:50the best from start to finish. There isn't really any reason to
- 0:54think that that won't continue in logical terms.
- 0:58But baseball is very unpredictable.
- 1:00I would say much like hockey or the NFL, it's a lot about
- 1:06getting hot at the right time. In the NFL, if you have a heart
- 1:09hot quarterback, you can make a run.
- 1:11In the NHL, you get the hot goalie, you can make a run.
- 1:13In baseball, if you get a pitcher that just is shutting
- 1:17everybody down, you have a really good chance to go to the
- 1:21World Series. I like the playoff format.
- 1:25The best of three, then the best of five, then the best of seven
- 1:27and then the World Series personally.
- 1:30It, you know, it makes the regular season more exciting.
- 1:32Less so in this one though. I think a lot of the playoff
- 1:35teams, except in the National League for the Diamondbacks
- 1:39being left out and the Mets, Braves having that doubleheader
- 1:43that put them both in the playoffs on on Monday, you know,
- 1:47we pretty much knew who the teams were going to be.
- 1:49But that's kind of my mini playoff review.
- 1:52I really like the Dodgers and I really like the Yankees.
- 1:56I mean, how could you not though, with their roster
- 1:59constructions and their pitching?
- 2:00That doesn't mean that's who it's going to be, but that
- 2:02that's who I like. Yeah, look, I'm not anywhere
- 2:06close to the baseball fan you are, although in my youth it was
- 2:09my favorite sport and I probably will TuneIn here or there.
- 2:12But I totally disagree with you on the format.
- 2:14I hate the format, and I think the proof is in the pudding.
- 2:18The last few years you had the Phillies 2022 wild card team,
- 2:23You had last year the Diamondbacks and the Rangers,
- 2:26both wild card teams. That's what I'm saying.
- 2:28I'm not saying a wild card team shouldn't.
- 2:31I'm not saying it's automatically bad if a wild card
- 2:33team makes the World Series. What I'm saying is there's not
- 2:36enough correlation between the regular season success and the
- 2:40postseason success. Now, some of that is for the
- 2:42reasons you pointed out, baseball's of sport where short
- 2:46series, often times the inferior team can win, right?
- 2:50There's nothing, there's nothing you can do about that.
- 2:53There's something to the hot pitcher thing.
- 2:55So some of that unpredictability is good and fine, but I think
- 2:59what has happened is they've erred too far on the side of
- 3:02unpredictability. And the reason is because the
- 3:04reason these wild card teams, I think are having so much success
- 3:07isn't just the unpredict unpredictability.
- 3:09I think it's because of the rustiness of the teams that get
- 3:12the buy. And I think that is a major flaw
- 3:15of this playoff format that in baseball, the rhythm is so
- 3:19important. And I think teams have talked
- 3:21about it. They're in fact, they're they're
- 3:23trying to come up with all kinds of things.
- 3:24Last year, one of the, I forget who it was, I think it was the
- 3:26Braves. They try to do simulated games
- 3:28while they had the break. I think it's it's a it it, it
- 3:32was a fit. It was a thing they did to give
- 3:33advantage to the teams of the two best records in each league.
- 3:36Give them a buy. The problem is it's actually
- 3:39potentially a disadvantage. I would like to see them go back
- 3:43to a format that was closer to the older format where the wild
- 3:47card teams had to play A1 game elimination.
- 3:49Like make there make there be a big difference between winning a
- 3:54division and a wild card. So if you're the wild card,
- 3:56you're playing one game and if you lose, you're done.
- 3:59And then if you win, you got to go play the top team in the
- 4:02league. And and the top team in the
- 4:03league's not sitting there for 5-6 seven days.
- 4:06They're sitting there for two days.
- 4:08So they're fresh too. I think that would be a better
- 4:11system. I understand why baseball
- 4:13doesn't do that. More teams, more games, more
- 4:15money. I get it.
- 4:16But if you want it's, it's a problem consistently when the
- 4:21best teams and in many cases with the best players, not
- 4:25always, sometimes the best teams, but not the best.
- 4:27But you mentioned like the Dodgers with Shohei Otani, they
- 4:32got one of the buys right. He is the most exciting player
- 4:35in baseball, the best player in baseball.
- 4:38They're one of the best teams clearly if they lose in that
- 4:42first round. They could to a wild.
- 4:44Card team, in part because they had the BI, which was supposed
- 4:48to be an advantage but made them rusty, and then they lose to a
- 4:51team that comes in hot and now Shohei Otani and the Dodgers are
- 4:54out in the first round and that and that continues to happen
- 4:56year after year. I just think that's bad for
- 4:58baseball. I think it's better in general
- 5:01to have your best teams and your biggest stars advance in the
- 5:05postseason, and I think this format makes that less likely
- 5:09than it should be. To your point, I like the one
- 5:13game series in the first round and then seven game series
- 5:16moving forward because it lessens the randomness of it.
- 5:22I think if you put the Oakland A's in the playoffs and you
- 5:25shook this thing up in a simulation, they would win a
- 5:29World Series out of 100 times. And I mean, that's part of the
- 5:32problem, right, Is because like I said, it's baseball.
- 5:35Like, there's a lot of randomness in baseball that
- 5:40makes it very. What What about the White Sox?
- 5:42Do you think they could win a World Series in a simulation?
- 5:45Oh my God, that's such a great question.
- 5:47The losing his team in the history of baseball It seems
- 5:51unlikely but I wouldn't rule it out.
- 5:54How about? That 4041 and 121 that.
- 5:57If you look at baseball this year, not a single team won 100
- 6:00games. Yeah, the White Sox lost 121,
- 6:04but no one else lost more than 100.
- 6:07Yeah, it it, which is strange cause in recent years that has
- 6:10not been the case, right? You've had tankers and you've
- 6:14had three or 400 win teams. In fact, the Dodgers had the
- 6:17best record in baseball, 98 and 64.
- 6:21Oh, Speaking of the Dodgers in baseball, I did I so I didn't
- 6:23have a chance to read this, but Nate Silver, who I love, did his
- 6:26newsletter today. And one of the questions someone
- 6:29asked him, what he answered, I haven't read.
- 6:30His response is, is Shohei Otani the best baseball player of all
- 6:34time? Now, I kind of hate these
- 6:35arguments in a way, because it's so weird to compare Babe Ruth
- 6:39and Shohei Otani with everything that's different now with
- 6:42nutrition and sports science. And I mean, it's just, but it is
- 6:47a fun debate if, and I just think I will say this, I can't
- 6:51imagine there has been a better baseball player than Shia Atani.
- 6:54Would you consider the value that he provides?
- 6:58I mean, he had one of the best offensive seasons we've seen
- 7:00this year. He's going to win.
- 7:01What is this, his 3rd or 4th MVPA win?
- 7:03I've lost count and he didn't even get the pitch, which by the
- 7:07way, he's one of the best pitchers in the league.
- 7:09I mean, to have a guy who at the same time as one of the elite
- 7:11hitters and elite pitchers in baseball to do that year after
- 7:14year after year. I mean, I think you certainly
- 7:17can make the argument he's the best player ever.
- 7:20He's not a better hitter than Barry Bonds.
- 7:23Well, he's not. No.
- 7:25He's not. He's a better pitcher.
- 7:27Though Well, obviously I mean that that's the unique thing,
- 7:31right? I think I like, look, forgive me
- 7:35for having some perspective, but I like to wait until a person's
- 7:38career over before I start really making that conversation
- 7:43valid. Otani could get hurt next year
- 7:45and you know the Los Angeles Dodgers would still owe him a
- 7:48bazillion dollars and he'd be fine.
- 7:50But would he be better than Babe Ruth?
- 7:54I don't want to nerd out on this too much 'cause no one cares.
- 7:57But look back at how Babe Ruth was better than the entire
- 8:00league. He hit more home runs than teams
- 8:03than teams. Like we need to like just
- 8:05comment, is Otani hitting more at home runs than teams?
- 8:09He's not like, that's the remarkable part about Babe Ruth.
- 8:12It wasn't just his singular production.
- 8:15It was his singular production relative to everyone else who
- 8:18played baseball. And yes, they were plumbers and
- 8:21firemen. And, you know, the Yankees had a
- 8:23short porch and Forbes Field was 490 feet to center field.
- 8:27And there's a lot of things that we can talk about that make it
- 8:30different, but I'm just talking about his production relative to
- 8:34everyone else who played the game.
- 8:36The gap between him and everybody else is not the same.
- 8:40Oh, Tawny. I mean, Aaron Judge is great.
- 8:43I mean, you know he. He had.
- 8:45An amazing well, I I would say you're mostly right, but I think
- 8:48if you go back and look at Lou Gehrig, his teammate stats, they
- 8:51were they were pretty comparable in a lot of years.
- 8:55Like Garrett Ruth hit more home runs, but their overall stat
- 8:58lines were pretty comparable. But you're right, Babe Ruth was
- 9:01was a dominant player, way better than I mean in.
- 9:04The amount that's more of sports, Babe Ruth is on it and
- 9:07show hey Tony is not. So how about that's true?
- 9:09Let's say this Babe Ruth was better than the average player
- 9:12of his day by a margin that is hard to even calculate his
- 9:16world. Would be 50,000.
- 9:19Right.
