- 0:46Speaker 3: All right, ladies and gentlemen. I'm here with Let's Talk
- 0:49Speaker 3: and my crew. I gotta have Hollis Lewis and Odi Hello,
- 0:54Speaker 3: and once again Lisa, our distinguished other co hosts.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Hollis Lewis has some news.
- 1:06Speaker 3: That he's gonna put out there and we will have
- 1:08Speaker 3: a discussion after he kind of gives us a little
- 1:11Speaker 3: bit of an update on the transfer. Okay, so basically
- 1:14Speaker 3: what during the legislative session, We've had interims this week.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Again it got a little disrupted because of the weather,
- 1:20Speaker 3: and during the interims, the Joint Education Committee athletic directors
- 1:24Speaker 3: and other interested parties, but particularly athletic directors came in
- 1:27Speaker 3: and they talked to lawmakers again. And I just want
- 1:30Speaker 3: to clarify during interests, when not actually passing laws anything
- 1:34Speaker 3: like that, were actually sort of taking in information so
- 1:36Speaker 3: that way, once the session actually officially starts, you know,
- 1:39Speaker 3: we'll be able to move forward with bills and different
- 1:42Speaker 3: things of that nature. But in essence, athletic directors from
- 1:46Speaker 3: around the state they came and talked to lawmakers about
- 1:48Speaker 3: their issues with the transfer rule. You know, most of
- 1:53Speaker 3: the some of the law some of the athletic directors
- 1:56Speaker 3: they were for, they liked the school choice, but I
- 1:58Speaker 3: would say most of them took issue with it just
- 2:01Speaker 3: causing disruption. They named things like far as irregular. And
- 2:06Speaker 3: the thing that you know struck me the most is
- 2:09Speaker 3: that they were particularly concerned about junior and seniors transferring.
- 2:15Speaker 3: That's who they were concerned because I think number one
- 2:18Speaker 3: they talked about that just the disruption as far as
- 2:20Speaker 3: the community base, which you've talked about, as far as
- 2:23Speaker 3: around the schools and talking about you know, you know,
- 2:26Speaker 3: leaving those sophomores and freshmen behind, not being able to
- 2:31Speaker 3: cultivate talent. And also they talked about the inequities as
- 2:34Speaker 3: far as like which we'll talk about here in a second,
- 2:37Speaker 3: the scoring, you know, those who are actually getting the
- 2:40Speaker 3: kids or you know, they talked about the increased numbers
- 2:43Speaker 3: of shortened games, and for those who don't know, in
- 2:45Speaker 3: high school sports, once you're up by a certain amount
- 2:48Speaker 3: in like I think the second half, it's a continual clock, right,
- 2:51Speaker 3: you know, to the score comes back down to a
- 2:53Speaker 3: specific number. I think once you're about thirty five, I
- 2:55Speaker 3: think something like that. I think it's I want to
- 2:57Speaker 3: say thirty five.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Thirty five, Yep, it's got to be around thirty five.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's thirty five.
- 3:02Speaker 3: So basically, when you're about five touchdowns, it's just a
- 3:05Speaker 3: continual o'clock.
- 3:06Speaker 4: And that's crazy.
- 3:07Speaker 3: And as far as the numbers before you say that,
- 3:10Speaker 3: the numbers went from one fifty five and two thousand
- 3:13Speaker 3: and three from shortened games to two fifty five in
- 3:17Speaker 3: twenty twenty four, so it's been one hundred game increase
- 3:20Speaker 3: in one year. And we've also seen it increased number
- 3:23Speaker 3: of transfers. So and everybody's clear that I have I
- 3:30Speaker 3: hate this like I hate every every part of it.
- 3:34Speaker 3: And word, yeah, it is the right word. It is
- 3:39Speaker 3: the right word for me specifically because what I don't understand,
- 3:44Speaker 3: and I've said, you know, to the safety issue, just
- 3:48Speaker 3: to the safety issue, when when that top player, those
- 3:52Speaker 3: top players, those juniors and seniors leave, they force those
- 3:57Speaker 3: sophomores and basic freshness who are who are ninth graders?
- 4:04Speaker 3: You know, you start talking about ninth and tenth graders
- 4:07Speaker 3: playing leading off against the team that's loaded with transfer kids.
- 4:14Speaker 3: That's how you get those seventy You score seventy points
- 4:17Speaker 3: against another team. The physicality of that is crazy to me.
- 4:24Speaker 3: I mean, it makes no sense that you can you
- 4:29Speaker 3: can see, I don't care how long you sit in
- 4:31Speaker 3: a room. I don't care how long in what you
- 4:33Speaker 3: say and how you try to justify it. It is
- 4:36Speaker 3: not okay.
- 4:38Speaker 4: It's just not for me. I just as a football
- 4:41Speaker 4: player looking at it and trying.
- 4:44Speaker 3: To say, okay, can I take a college Can I
- 4:48Speaker 3: take a freshman sophomore college kid put him into into
- 4:54Speaker 3: a practice in the NFL in physical contact, how's that
- 5:01Speaker 3: gonna work? And just to put it in perspective. In
- 5:05Speaker 3: twenty twenty three, statewide, there were approximately four hundred and
- 5:09Speaker 3: thirty two transfers. That's across all fall sports, and in
- 5:14Speaker 3: twenty twenty four there were four hundred and thirty three.
- 5:17Speaker 3: So we're seeing annually at least for the last the
- 5:20Speaker 3: sample size, about four hundred and thirty plus kids are
- 5:23Speaker 3: transferring annually now for the last two years at least.
- 5:27Speaker 5: And the problem with that too, Hollis and Carl, I
- 5:29Speaker 5: think part of it is when this began, when this
- 5:31Speaker 5: whole transfer portal issue began, it was a one time
- 5:35Speaker 5: transfer deal.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Am I correct?
- 5:37Speaker 5: At the beginning when it was first introduced, it was
- 5:39Speaker 5: a one time transfer and it was before their ninth
- 5:42Speaker 5: grade year, right, and then.
- 5:43Speaker 3: After that was like now, I think that's the original Reglar,
- 5:46Speaker 3: original one, that's the original one probably would not have
- 5:49Speaker 3: had the ramifications, and it didn't that it's growing into today,
- 5:54Speaker 3: and I guess the changes that the legislatures made to
- 5:58Speaker 3: the legislation over the years is is just grown into
- 6:01Speaker 3: this monster now that that's really affected the whole landscape
- 6:05Speaker 3: of high school football. Hallisten, I have a question for
- 6:08Speaker 3: you to your point, what has what Okay, So let's
- 6:15Speaker 3: say it's at point you know, point A, right, it's
- 6:19Speaker 3: going to start at a and it's and it's kind
- 6:22Speaker 3: of okay. You know, people can dislike it, people like
- 6:25Speaker 3: me can dislike it. But it's but it's okay. It's
- 6:28Speaker 3: a certain live with it.
- 6:29Speaker 4: So you can live with it.
- 6:30Speaker 3: You're living with it. And then by then you wait
- 6:33Speaker 3: two more two more years, three more years, four more years,
- 6:36Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden, it's completely out of control.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Well how does that happen? It happens because of now
- 6:43Speaker 3: you've implemented freedom of choice as far as schools. So
- 6:46Speaker 3: when you have the Hope scholarship and now I can
- 6:48Speaker 3: go to any school I want to, I can. You know,
- 6:51Speaker 3: I don't have to go to school. I'm not bound
- 6:53Speaker 3: by my district anymore. So if if again, and I'm saying,
- 6:57Speaker 3: if you're a regular student, you can go to any
- 6:59Speaker 3: school that you want to based on this whole scholarship,
- 7:01Speaker 3: I can go to public school, private school, charge school,
- 7:03Speaker 3: with anything I want. So by defect, by default, you
- 7:06Speaker 3: cannot now tell me I can't play sports at the
- 7:09Speaker 3: school now that I'm transferring to. So basically, when you
- 7:12Speaker 3: implement the sort of the mindset and the strategy of
- 7:15Speaker 3: saying freedom of choice as far as school is concerned.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Then by default sports come with that, you know, so
- 7:22Speaker 3: I think you almost can't have one without the other.
- 7:26Speaker 3: You can't allow me to say I can go to
- 7:27Speaker 3: any school I want, but I can't play I have
- 7:29Speaker 3: to sit out a year and do all these extra
- 7:31Speaker 3: things to play sports. So I think that you know,
- 7:35Speaker 3: it's to me, it's sort of hard to walk it
- 7:38Speaker 3: back as far as the transfers is concerned, because I
- 7:42Speaker 3: still have freedom of choice in school and you cannot
- 7:45Speaker 3: come back and say, well you, because I think some
- 7:48Speaker 3: people will say, well, Okay, you can't transfer for athletic reasons,
- 7:51Speaker 3: well you, And I know some people athletically as far
- 7:54Speaker 3: as it's tied to school is just as much as academic.
- 7:58Speaker 4: That's what they're there to do.
- 7:59Speaker 3: And then they'll you know, get their academics on the
- 8:01Speaker 3: back end, or academics arise, you know, as they go
- 8:03Speaker 3: through school. So it's going to be hard in my
- 8:06Speaker 3: mind to walk this back because of that.
- 8:10Speaker 5: So how do we fix this? I mean the legitimately, well,
- 8:16Speaker 5: is there a fix? I don't know, but I mean
- 8:18Speaker 5: what we're seeing in the fall for high school football
- 8:21Speaker 5: is atrocious. I mean, we're seeing these these kids, the
- 8:25Speaker 5: games aren't competitive. There's only what's happening is they all
- 8:29Speaker 5: migrate to the one you know, the high schools that
- 8:31Speaker 5: have the best athletic programs, and then those schools keep
- 8:35Speaker 5: thriving and they keep attracting those those better athletes and
- 8:38Speaker 5: the rest of the it's almost it's almost mirrors what's
- 8:43Speaker 5: going on at the college level. It really does.
- 8:46Speaker 3: And I would say, just my opinion, I would say
- 8:49Speaker 3: you have to start with coaching. So number one, I again,
- 8:53Speaker 3: I don't know where this money's coming from, because again
- 8:55Speaker 3: that's what we all complaining about. We fight at the
- 8:57Speaker 3: legislature every day. Will I would say, we have to
- 8:59Speaker 3: pay our coaches more. And I almost think it should
- 9:04Speaker 3: be like a separate position outside of school. I think
- 9:06Speaker 3: it should be a salary position, and we need to
- 9:08Speaker 3: demand from our coaches like, hey, we're gonna pay you
- 9:11Speaker 3: a salary position to coach. It's like they doing Texas,
- 9:14Speaker 3: just like they're doing Kentucky, South Carolina all over the country.
- 9:17Speaker 3: This is a salary position to coach. Now, gain you
- 9:19Speaker 3: might have some other responsibilities in the school, but your
- 9:21Speaker 3: main job is to coach. This is what you're getting
- 9:24Speaker 3: paid for. And I think that if we allow our
- 9:28Speaker 3: coaches just to focus on coaching, then they could you know,
- 9:31Speaker 3: rise their level and kids would be attracted to come
- 9:34Speaker 3: to this school because they're going to get excellent coaching.
- 9:36Speaker 3: So I think that to me, that's where it could
- 9:39Speaker 3: be a fix at because again I don't know unless
- 9:42Speaker 3: you're gonna say we're gonna change all this legislation, we
- 9:44Speaker 3: want to stop hope scholarship and do all this stuff,
- 9:47Speaker 3: and again we know that's probably not going to happen
- 9:49Speaker 3: at least not none of these next couple of administrations. Right,
- 9:53Speaker 3: So I think we got to allow our coaches to
- 9:56Speaker 3: focus on coaching, so that way I can be a
- 9:58Speaker 3: full time coach no matter i' to the Cameron. If
- 10:01Speaker 3: I'm a South Charleston from a capital for Miss spring
- 10:03Speaker 3: Mill and I can get I can dedicate my time
- 10:06Speaker 3: to that. So so so let's say in my situation
- 10:10Speaker 3: going to South Charleston, I know and I mean what
- 10:18Speaker 3: I and I wasn't worried about the financial piece of it.
- 10:21Speaker 3: But I'll say this, I cannot imagine someone who's not teaching,
- 10:26Speaker 3: who's not doing something else in the school, either in
- 10:31Speaker 3: the school or working somewhere else. You can't just coach.
- 10:36Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. I'm saying, pay you enough.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Dolge, just so you can just coach, so you're not
- 10:42Speaker 3: a supplement a salary, not a supplement a salary.
- 10:44Speaker 4: That's exactly what I'm because you put it.
- 10:46Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know if people understand the hours
- 10:51Speaker 3: that coaching demand you.
- 10:54Speaker 4: You don't understand it unless you've coached, you know, Yeah,
- 10:56Speaker 4: I mean literally, you're there. You probably the first person there,
- 11:02Speaker 4: you know, in the morning, and you're probably likely going
- 11:05Speaker 4: to be the last person or you and a couple
- 11:08Speaker 4: of coaches are going to be the last people leaving
- 11:11Speaker 4: well past nine o'clock.
- 11:13Speaker 3: And that's the thing, Like you can have actually an
- 11:15Speaker 3: excellent coach who's filled with knowledge, who knows what they're doing.
- 11:19Speaker 3: But because it's a supplement, they have family obligations, they
- 11:23Speaker 3: have their other career obligations. They don't have the time
- 11:26Speaker 3: to be invested to the point that they should be
- 11:30Speaker 3: right because and again and again, you may have and
- 11:33Speaker 3: that may be different for different schools who you know,
- 11:36Speaker 3: operate a little different. But I say, make it a
- 11:39Speaker 3: salary position where you are paid to coach, so that
- 11:42Speaker 3: way you can invest all your time, and you can
- 11:44Speaker 3: do everything you need to do in order to raise
- 11:48Speaker 3: the level of your program.
- 11:49Speaker 5: And how do you see that working? I mean your
- 11:51Speaker 5: vision of that. Would it be like a teacher salary
- 11:54Speaker 5: or because even that I think you know, being a teacher,
- 11:58Speaker 5: that's hard to make it on I mean starting a supplement,
- 12:03Speaker 5: but still I don't know if that's I think it
- 12:05Speaker 5: will help.
- 12:06Speaker 4: But then and to okay, to your point, so let's
- 12:10Speaker 4: say that happens.
- 12:12Speaker 3: I've got to have five six coaches who are gonna
- 12:16Speaker 3: be there and going to be as active as I'm
- 12:18Speaker 3: gonna be.
- 12:20Speaker 4: What do we pay them?
- 12:21Speaker 2: You know?
- 12:21Speaker 4: And and again I'm not trying to I'm not trying.
- 12:23Speaker 3: To make it, but just trying to make people see
- 12:27Speaker 3: the expense, how expensive the coaching aspect of it is.
- 12:33Speaker 3: And if you're not getting that, I just don't know how.
- 12:37Speaker 3: I mean, again, in the offer, in the in the
- 12:39Speaker 3: in the solution that I'm offering, I would even submit
- 12:43Speaker 3: to you that it is probably not the best solution.
- 12:45Speaker 3: I just don't know if there's another solution. If we're
- 12:49Speaker 3: going to say you have freedom of choice as far
- 12:51Speaker 3: as any school, you have the whole scholarship, you can
- 12:53Speaker 3: do anything you want as far as your personal education.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So so we're saying, so if it's going to be
- 12:59Speaker 3: hard to restrict transferring based off that, then I think
- 13:03Speaker 3: the answer is, say we're gonna pay coaches a comparable salary.
- 13:07Speaker 3: We're gonna give maybe some increases for as supplements to
- 13:11Speaker 3: a few assistant coaches. So maybe you have, you know,
- 13:15Speaker 3: a head coach getting this, an assistant getting that. Then
- 13:17Speaker 3: we're gonna supplement a couple more assistants. So that way,
- 13:22Speaker 3: at the very least, these coaches could be dedicate one
- 13:24Speaker 3: hundred percent of their time to that sport. Because what
- 13:28Speaker 3: we know is that, you know, sports are just as
- 13:31Speaker 3: important as academics to some kids, and this is some
- 13:34Speaker 3: kids pathway not to NFL, but just to college, or
- 13:37Speaker 3: not even to college.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Maybe just to make it through high school. Yes, you
- 13:40Speaker 4: know what I mean. So we know that.
- 13:41Speaker 3: So if any listener could offer any other, you know, solution, please,
- 13:47Speaker 3: I'm all ears because I just don't know if that's
- 13:50Speaker 3: the only thing I could really think of, to be
- 13:52Speaker 3: honest with you, and Lisa, you know, I think about
- 13:55Speaker 3: myself and and I'm I was just ate up withall.
- 14:00Speaker 3: I love sports, but football was the thing that I
- 14:04Speaker 3: was trying to get.
- 14:06Speaker 5: That was your goal, that was my goal, end goal.
- 14:09Speaker 3: And I'm trying to figure out, like today, how does
- 14:17Speaker 3: that coach, how does a coach coach me? How how
- 14:22Speaker 3: do we manage how do we manage this situation here
- 14:26Speaker 3: of either you having you're having a problem with transfers.
- 14:36Speaker 3: You know, let's say I'm pretty good, I get pretty good.
- 14:38Speaker 3: How does that coach now coach me.
- 14:42Speaker 4: To keep me? How does he like what is he
- 14:44Speaker 4: supposed to do?
- 14:45Speaker 3: You know?
- 14:46Speaker 4: And if somebody saying, oh man, he's getting really good,
- 14:49Speaker 4: and I'm thinking in my mind, you know, I might
- 14:52Speaker 4: go you know, I may go to g W because
- 14:55Speaker 4: Hollis is up there and they won a championship and
- 14:58Speaker 4: we haven't won one. I might want to go there.
- 15:00Speaker 4: If you're the coach, what's your what's your what's the
- 15:04Speaker 4: things that you said to hold?
- 15:05Speaker 5: I think it's just a fine line these coaches have
- 15:08Speaker 5: to walk. I mean it used to be that, you know,
- 15:10Speaker 5: the kids didn't have the option of being able to
- 15:13Speaker 5: leave when they wanted to basically, and the coach had
- 15:17Speaker 5: more more leeway. I guess the power that power in
- 15:23Speaker 5: the way that they disciplined students or their student athletes
- 15:27Speaker 5: in the way they they you know, practiced with those
- 15:30Speaker 5: with those kids, how how they how they treated them
- 15:32Speaker 5: in general. And now these kids know what their options
- 15:36Speaker 5: are and they know if they don't like the way
- 15:38Speaker 5: things are going at the school or the way the
- 15:39Speaker 5: coach spoke to them today at practice, or you know,
- 15:43Speaker 5: just maybe the the the way the path that the
- 15:47Speaker 5: school's following as far as championships. You know, they know
- 15:50Speaker 5: these things. They their social media that they see everything
- 15:52Speaker 5: that it's crazy all of the outlets that they have
- 15:56Speaker 5: and the information access they have way more than we had.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Here's the thing.
- 16:00Speaker 3: As a coach now, your job has changed. If you're
- 16:02Speaker 3: a head coach, I would say, and I'm saying as
- 16:07Speaker 3: a modern head coach, I don't know if your job
- 16:09Speaker 3: is football now, and I would say that if you
- 16:13Speaker 3: want to attract students, you want to track, you want
- 16:15Speaker 3: to keep those athletes, number one, you gotta recruit your
- 16:17Speaker 3: own locker room. And number two, you got to give
- 16:19Speaker 3: them something. So for example, if you take like a
- 16:21Speaker 3: Martinsburg coach, well, if you know you go, if you
- 16:23Speaker 3: going to Martinsburg, it's a good chance that you're gonna
- 16:26Speaker 3: win a state championship, so you can you can basically
- 16:29Speaker 3: you can recruit me on that because then you have
- 16:31Speaker 3: other coaches who you know, they're traveling the country. You
- 16:35Speaker 3: take what Donnie Mays did a hurricane. He went to
- 16:37Speaker 3: Detroit and played the game. Right, so now there's sort
- 16:40Speaker 3: of that national exposure. I can go to Detroit and
- 16:42Speaker 3: go to Ohio. I think they're gonna play They're gonna
- 16:45Speaker 3: open up in Ohio or Kentucky next year. Right, So
- 16:48Speaker 3: now it's like, and I'm talking abut hurricane here locally.
- 16:50Speaker 3: So now I'm playing these regional and and sort of
- 16:53Speaker 3: national games so I can get national exposure that way.
- 16:56Speaker 3: You have other coaches who are you know, every year
- 16:58Speaker 3: they putting kids in college. So you gotta have something.
- 17:01Speaker 3: You gotta almost have a stick. Now I'm not saying
- 17:03Speaker 3: a gimmick per se, but you gotta do have something
- 17:06Speaker 3: that you do really really well. So you're not getting
- 17:09Speaker 3: me unless you have something. You gotta do something that
- 17:12Speaker 3: I care about. So that's either that's gonna be giving
- 17:15Speaker 3: me national exposure through playing these national games or doing
- 17:19Speaker 3: the seven h seven thing, or or I'm gonna win
- 17:22Speaker 3: a championship or I'm gonna this is a hot bed.
- 17:24Speaker 3: I'm gonna recruit. You have all these relationships, that's part
- 17:27Speaker 3: of what you're working on. So it's got or for example,
- 17:30Speaker 3: GW you're gonna get the balance of being in a
- 17:33Speaker 3: good athletic program and an excellent academic program. So you
- 17:37Speaker 3: have to have something as a coach that you can say, hey,
- 17:40Speaker 3: this is what we do well and if you care
- 17:42Speaker 3: about this, this is the place for you.
- 17:45Speaker 4: So I think your days of just going out there and.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Trying to kick butt and cut some people out and
- 17:50Speaker 3: coach and just being on football discipline, them days are gone.
- 17:54Speaker 3: You gotta have something that you do really, really well
- 17:57Speaker 3: that's going to attract to this and some some programs.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Hey you just I have the fly and best gear.
- 18:01Speaker 3: We a Nike school. We got we got all the
- 18:04Speaker 3: fresh new everything. So it's gotta be something. This is
- 18:07Speaker 3: bigger than football. Now is your job as a as
- 18:10Speaker 3: a football coach? Even and I'm saying that's at the
- 18:13Speaker 3: high school level, college level.
- 18:14Speaker 5: And even you know, but do you think these high
- 18:16Speaker 5: school coaches realize that that?
- 18:20Speaker 3: I think again, I think I like Donnie Maye realizes
- 18:24Speaker 3: a lot of kids go to college and he's doing
- 18:26Speaker 3: the thing where he's he's basically trying to travel to
- 18:29Speaker 3: the region playing other teams do it.
- 18:31Speaker 4: And I think that to your point, the folks who
- 18:34Speaker 4: are who are out of touch are people like me.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Who the old people like the old folks that are coaching,
- 18:42Speaker 3: who are just like like we we just don't, we can't.
- 18:45Speaker 4: It happened too fast, and it didn't. I wasn't part
- 18:48Speaker 4: of that transition.
- 18:49Speaker 3: I walked into that kind of a transition, and I'm
- 18:52Speaker 3: like looking at this and thinking to myself, like, no,
- 18:55Speaker 3: this is no, I'm not I'm not gonna recruit you.
- 18:58Speaker 3: I had I had a couple of folks who were
- 19:01Speaker 3: who were friends of mine, was like, you know, hey,
- 19:06Speaker 3: you know we're willing to I said, look, if you
- 19:09Speaker 3: want to come, come, I'm not I know, I'm not
- 19:13Speaker 3: coming to you.
- 19:14Speaker 4: I'm not offering you nothing. I'm not saying, I'm not kidding.
- 19:18Speaker 3: I'm not gonna suggest to you to bring your son
- 19:23Speaker 3: from Hollis's team just because I want to be the
- 19:26Speaker 3: better team.
- 19:27Speaker 4: I just that don't work for me. That just does
- 19:29Speaker 4: not work for me. And I mean, but you got it.
- 19:32Speaker 3: I know that's the way that is that I even
- 19:35Speaker 3: if you look at like Saint Albans with coach Stotts,
- 19:37Speaker 3: like you should have seen what he did with their
- 19:39Speaker 3: locker room, their field out right, this is high school.
- 19:41Speaker 3: They got the little drink stations, they got pool, they
- 19:43Speaker 3: got PlayStation in there. It looked, it looks beautiful in there, right,
- 19:47Speaker 3: And that's just something that you got to have to
- 19:50Speaker 3: get kids coming.
- 19:51Speaker 5: And to your point, Hollis and to yours, Carl, that
- 19:54Speaker 5: probably what the smaller schools that are not on the
- 19:57Speaker 5: levels of the Martinsburgs and the gw is maybe what
- 19:59Speaker 5: they can bring to the table and offer is hey,
- 20:01Speaker 5: playing time. Absolutely, and Martinsburg you come down here, you're
- 20:06Speaker 5: gonna start for us. I mean they've got to They've
- 20:10Speaker 5: got to figure out ways. They may not have the
- 20:12Speaker 5: lucrative resources financially to be able to track these kids,
- 20:16Speaker 5: but they can't attract them with playing time.
- 20:17Speaker 3: And I'll say that too to your point, Lisa, that's
- 20:20Speaker 3: another thing. As a head coach, you just again you
- 20:23Speaker 3: can't spend all your time out there on the football field,
- 20:25Speaker 3: think you just coaching. You gotta go talk to your community.
- 20:27Speaker 3: You got to go talk to the to the big
- 20:29Speaker 3: time lawyer, the car dealer, your friends, the alumni, and
- 20:33Speaker 3: you gotta get that money up too. That's a part
- 20:35Speaker 3: of this deal too. It amazes it just amazes me
- 20:39Speaker 3: that we we just got here, especially in high school,
- 20:44Speaker 3: we got here so fast.
- 20:47Speaker 4: I don't know, though, I think we got here slow
- 20:49Speaker 4: West Virginia. I think stuff like this been.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Going on, comparing us to I'm not comparing us to
- 20:56Speaker 3: other other states. I'm just just thinking it seemed like
- 21:00Speaker 3: it started and we're already and we have already blew up.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Like you know, right, it happened quicker than I think
- 21:07Speaker 3: coaches got money.
- 21:09Speaker 4: I think it.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Happened quicker or all the benefits are are available to you,
- 21:15Speaker 3: Like I don't. You're talking to me about something, man,
- 21:17Speaker 3: and I ain't. I don't know yet that I can promise.
- 21:20Speaker 5: You that you know and I know with me, But
- 21:29Speaker 5: do you do you also think, guys, that this might
- 21:31Speaker 5: deter a lot of promising coaches to not go into
- 21:36Speaker 5: high school coaching just because of all the things that
- 21:39Speaker 5: are being required of it now without compensation. I mean,
- 21:42Speaker 5: I really think what you said makes the most sense
- 21:45Speaker 5: is to find a way to salary these coaches because
- 21:47Speaker 5: what they're doing on a supplement is not going to
- 21:49Speaker 5: attract I mean unless they're just really, really really you know,
- 21:53Speaker 5: in love with being a coach at the high school
- 21:56Speaker 5: level and the supplements part is not, it's not going
- 21:59Speaker 5: to cut it.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I would to answer your question, and I was a
- 22:03Speaker 3: high school, middle school, and youth level coach for about
- 22:05Speaker 3: eight years, and there's no way at this point in
- 22:09Speaker 3: my life i would step back into any coaching that
- 22:12Speaker 3: I'm not looking at trying to make hundreds of thousands,
- 22:15Speaker 3: if not millions of dollars. If I'm going to spend
- 22:17Speaker 3: my time as a high school football coach. Number One,
- 22:20Speaker 3: I want to be the head coach. I'm trying to
- 22:22Speaker 3: rise to that level, right, So I want to rise
- 22:24Speaker 3: to the level to be a head coach. And if
- 22:26Speaker 3: I'm going to spend all that time because basically to
- 22:29Speaker 3: what we just talked about, pretty much you're a small
- 22:31Speaker 3: college collegiate coaches as far as time is concerned, right,
- 22:35Speaker 3: and the things that you're now having to do. So
- 22:37Speaker 3: if I'm going to do that, then I'm trying to
- 22:39Speaker 3: get to Alabama. I'm trying to get to Florida State
- 22:41Speaker 3: up Marshall, w I'm trying to get supplemented handsomely for
- 22:46Speaker 3: what I'm doing. You're so, if I'm hearing you correctly,
- 22:51Speaker 3: you're you're somewhat just like the parents and the kids are.
- 22:54Speaker 3: They're looking for their best situation and I'm and you're
- 22:57Speaker 3: looking for you know, not necessarily, but what I'm saying
- 23:01Speaker 3: is like, I'm not going to spend all that time
- 23:03Speaker 3: doing that too, to have and to deal with all
- 23:07Speaker 3: the things that come with it. And then then I'm
- 23:10Speaker 3: looking up and I'm not being supplemented in a way
- 23:13Speaker 3: that's I think, you know what I mean. It's so
- 23:17Speaker 3: if I'm gonna do this, then I'm I need to
- 23:18Speaker 3: go to the collegiate route, or at least I can
- 23:21Speaker 3: get paid.
- 23:21Speaker 5: Right, because it's not like it used to be. It
- 23:23Speaker 5: used to be a supplement was fine because basically the
- 23:25Speaker 5: coach went out there that he you know, conducted practices,
- 23:29Speaker 5: he took the team to games, went to a PEP assembly.
- 23:32Speaker 5: I mean, there was wasn't like the things that it
- 23:35Speaker 5: is involved now, or at the.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Least you knew you had your guys. You knew that.
- 23:40Speaker 3: At least like I knew that if I'm going to
- 23:43Speaker 3: South Charleston Middle, Dunbar Middle, I know these are the
- 23:46Speaker 3: kids that I'm getting.
- 23:47Speaker 4: I'm probably gonna have a couple move in, pupple move out.
- 23:49Speaker 4: But I know what I got. But now, shoot you,
- 23:53Speaker 4: it's You's a battle. It's a battle. I want. I
- 23:58Speaker 4: want to. I want to the middle schools a couple
- 24:02Speaker 4: of times, two you know.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Which which I was advised to because I would not
- 24:08Speaker 3: have probably done it, but I was advised. I was
- 24:12Speaker 3: not to the point when I say I wasn't thinking
- 24:16Speaker 3: about necessarily doing it.
- 24:18Speaker 4: I wasn't.
- 24:19Speaker 3: I wasn't even really sure really where we were, you
- 24:22Speaker 3: know what I'm saying, And so I would my first
- 24:25Speaker 3: concern would have been given them something to see, right, Okay, okay,
- 24:30Speaker 3: But so but I go to I go to to
- 24:33Speaker 3: the middle school, and when I look like I'm looking
- 24:40Speaker 3: and I'm talking to the kids like I don't see,
- 24:43Speaker 3: like I don't see nobody that's really like locked in,
- 24:46Speaker 3: focused in, want to hear what I gotta say. But
- 24:50Speaker 3: then when I get back, it's the same thing. You know,
- 24:54Speaker 3: when I come back to the school high school, I'm
- 24:57Speaker 3: looking for that. I'm looking for you, who's listened to me,
- 25:00Speaker 3: who's waiting on just something to motivate you? A step more,
- 25:06Speaker 3: get more desired, just anything possible. And I'm not and
- 25:10Speaker 3: I'm not speaking about any kids, and I'm not talking
- 25:13Speaker 3: about the group of kids. I'm just saying but for
- 25:15Speaker 3: me as the coach trying to try trying to get
- 25:18Speaker 3: into to South Charleston and trying to get kids to
- 25:24Speaker 3: stay focused or get focused, get prepared, try to go
- 25:31Speaker 3: out and actually play and win some games. Man, it was,
- 25:36Speaker 3: it was, it was so it was a challenge of
- 25:39Speaker 3: even trying to find who was really interested in actually
- 25:44Speaker 3: getting out on the field and really going after I mean,
- 25:47Speaker 3: there were there were some, but again it wasn't their
- 25:51Speaker 3: time yet. That's the problem that the kids who were
- 25:54Speaker 3: supposed to be playing with the kids that were gone,
- 25:57Speaker 3: and all of a sudden, now I've got a kid
- 25:59Speaker 3: who who it's not developed, who's not ready yet, doesn't
- 26:02Speaker 3: even know what he's supposed to be thinking or how
- 26:05Speaker 3: he's supposed to be acting, what role he can play?
- 26:08Speaker 4: Can he be the leader? You know, all of a sudden,
- 26:10Speaker 4: you've been following, you know, a senior, a junior, a senior,
- 26:14Speaker 4: and now they're gone, and now it's you.
- 26:17Speaker 1: What do you do?
- 26:20Speaker 4: Man? How do you even like? How do you even.
- 26:22Speaker 5: I mean, the maturity levels between a freshman and a
- 26:25Speaker 5: senior is night and day.
- 26:26Speaker 4: Unbelieving, night and day unbelievable.
- 26:29Speaker 3: But I think too, like again, and I could take
- 26:32Speaker 3: myself like when I was a sophomore freshman man, if
- 26:34Speaker 3: you I'm one on the field and like during my era,
- 26:38Speaker 3: like we want on the field, like it don't matter, solveimore,
- 26:41Speaker 3: kick that out the window right, put me and the
- 26:43Speaker 3: game coach. And I just think that, like I said,
- 26:45Speaker 3: it's just it's a it's a different time now, it's
- 26:47Speaker 3: a different but see, motivations are different.
- 26:50Speaker 4: Kids think.
- 26:51Speaker 3: I think those kids think the same thing that we
- 26:53Speaker 3: thought back then, like I can play, let me in,
- 26:55Speaker 3: I want to go.
- 26:57Speaker 4: But the problem with that is some of them have
- 27:00Speaker 4: no idea yet what it really is.
- 27:03Speaker 3: I mean I would agree with that, and I think
- 27:05Speaker 3: that's always just you know, if you're new to something,
- 27:07Speaker 3: then that's always going to be kind of the the
- 27:10Speaker 3: the thing that you have to battle with, even within
- 27:12Speaker 3: yourself or as a coach. But I think now again,
- 27:15Speaker 3: I just think the motivations are different. I don't think,
- 27:17Speaker 3: like I said, it's it's hard to just come in
- 27:19Speaker 3: there with the Rob Rod speech it's hard to when
- 27:22Speaker 3: there's nothing else being you know, offer when there's nothing
- 27:25Speaker 3: else being promised, when there's nothing else being done outside
- 27:28Speaker 3: of football, it's like you gotta do a lot of
- 27:30Speaker 3: football plus stuff.
- 27:31Speaker 4: Are there? Are there?
- 27:34Speaker 3: Do you think there's as many solidified, believable work ethics.
- 27:40Speaker 4: That are being put forth to want to go play
- 27:44Speaker 4: college ball? One hundred percent? Do you think so percent?
- 27:47Speaker 3: You've seen like all the collegiate athletes that are in
- 27:50Speaker 3: West like coming out of West Virginia, these kids are
- 27:53Speaker 3: going D one, whether it's WVU type D one, big
- 27:56Speaker 3: Power four now or they're going to the smaller levels.
- 27:58Speaker 3: So it's a it's a lot of kids coming out
- 28:01Speaker 3: here playing college foot well. Again, to Lisa's point, what's
- 28:03Speaker 3: happening now is that the talent has going to one
- 28:07Speaker 3: place now. Talents are getting consolidated because they're you know,
- 28:12Speaker 3: there's going to you know, maybe one school or you
- 28:14Speaker 3: may have five or six or ten college players at
- 28:18Speaker 3: one school. I think we are having more players, which
- 28:24Speaker 3: we've never had a ton. We've got more players now
- 28:28Speaker 3: that are getting to that D one level and having
- 28:33Speaker 3: an opportunity and getting opportunities to actually get there and
- 28:36Speaker 3: play then we've probably ever had. Okay, but I'm not
- 28:41Speaker 3: sure if those kids are just they're just they're just
- 28:45Speaker 3: gifted in in in size, speed, determination and kids. Kids
- 28:51Speaker 3: work hard. Now that's what I one thing I will
- 28:53Speaker 3: say if you look at like because kids are doing
- 28:55Speaker 3: like a lot of the summer stuff, they're going to
- 28:57Speaker 3: private trainers. It's just a different type of work. It's
- 29:01Speaker 3: not work that's being facilitated one hundred percent by the
- 29:04Speaker 3: football program. Right, So a lot of that work is
- 29:08Speaker 3: coming from private trainers. They're going to plan for different
- 29:12Speaker 3: seven or seven or AAU teams, So they're going they're
- 29:14Speaker 3: getting this work at a lot of different places. It's
- 29:17Speaker 3: not like it was back in the day where there
- 29:20Speaker 3: you're you as a coach, are seeing everything because you're
- 29:23Speaker 3: facilitating all of it. And I think that's a that's
- 29:26Speaker 3: a that's a bit of a problem. They're not a problem,
- 29:29Speaker 3: but just a different take.
- 29:30Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a different take. And to also say this,
- 29:33Speaker 5: I when you think about some of your key skill
- 29:35Speaker 5: players that are going to these bigger schools that have
- 29:39Speaker 5: the they're laden with juniors and seniors. You've got a
- 29:42Speaker 5: better offensive line, you've got a better defensive line, you're
- 29:44Speaker 5: gonna better. You're going to better to be able to
- 29:46Speaker 5: perform better just because you've got better people around you.
- 29:50Speaker 5: So your your skill set's going to be able to shine.
- 29:52Speaker 4: Are So are we?
- 29:53Speaker 6: Are we?
- 29:54Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 29:54Speaker 1: Are we?
- 29:55Speaker 3: Is there a problem? Is there a problem for me
- 30:00Speaker 3: as the kid that needs to develop because those kids
- 30:05Speaker 3: leave and now you leave me with a team that's
- 30:09Speaker 3: possibly that that could be a problem because again, it's
- 30:12Speaker 3: not like it's like the iron sharp and iron Like
- 30:14Speaker 3: when I remember when Zaki Lawton and Exavier Bosley both
- 30:19Speaker 3: Division one football players, when they were both at South
- 30:22Speaker 3: Charles and they would you know, Zaki Lowton was a
- 30:24Speaker 3: defensive line, Xavier Bosley was a e Zaki Lawton was
- 30:28Speaker 3: a defensive linment and Xavier Bosley was an office line
- 30:31Speaker 3: and they would go head up head in practice every day,
- 30:34Speaker 3: right and they made.
- 30:35Speaker 4: Both I was gonna say, and it paid.
- 30:37Speaker 3: So again, that could be a problem because if you
- 30:39Speaker 3: just had one of them there and they're going against
- 30:41Speaker 3: way lesser talent in once they get in the game,
- 30:43Speaker 3: that could be problematic because it's not like the again,
- 30:45Speaker 3: the iron sharp and iron. All right, ladies and gentlemen,
- 30:48Speaker 3: we're gonna take a quick break and we will be
- 30:50Speaker 3: right back.

- 31:51Speaker 2: the conversation.
- 31:52Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we.
- 31:55Speaker 3: Are done with I guess the fighting, the fighting of
- 32:01Speaker 3: for now football and the transfer and.
- 32:05Speaker 4: I think now we're going to go to basketball, you know,
- 32:10Speaker 4: and the reality of NBA.
- 32:14Speaker 3: And I've been I don't know why I keep hearing this,
- 32:18Speaker 3: but you know, the obviously because it's true. The decline
- 32:23Speaker 3: in basketball the NBA viewership, Yeah, has dropped drastically. It's
- 32:30Speaker 3: a forty eight percent drop from twenty twelve to now
- 32:34Speaker 3: in viewership in the NBA specifically, Wow, And you hear
- 32:39Speaker 3: people talk about I don't know if I let me
- 32:42Speaker 3: rephrase that, I hear people talk about basketball players. I
- 32:46Speaker 3: don't know if I hear them talk about basketball as
- 32:49Speaker 3: a whole as like a team per se. Has basketball
- 32:54Speaker 3: lost its identity to individual players that you only watch
- 32:57Speaker 3: those players? That's actually a good question, and I think
- 33:00Speaker 3: basketball is It's kind of always been like that to
- 33:03Speaker 3: a certain degree, but you had those sort of team
- 33:06Speaker 3: makeups where you know, you would talk about like a
- 33:09Speaker 3: Michael Jordan, but you're talking about the totality of the bulls.
- 33:12Speaker 3: In my mind, I think what I would contribute to
- 33:14Speaker 3: the decline is just the style of play. I think
- 33:18Speaker 3: it's it's become too much reliant on the three point shot.
- 33:22Speaker 3: And while I like positionless basketball, I don't like it because,
- 33:28Speaker 3: like I don't want to see Wemby, you know, at
- 33:30Speaker 3: the three point line all the time. I don't want
- 33:33Speaker 3: to see a guy like Kevin Gard Kevin Durant, you know,
- 33:36Speaker 3: he's a great skilled basketball player man getting the post.
- 33:39Speaker 3: But where's the guys that nobody's playing back to the
- 33:43Speaker 3: basket and give me them, you know, kim O Lajawan
- 33:46Speaker 3: or Shack Moves, you know, where we can have those
- 33:49Speaker 3: sort of different identities on the court.
- 33:52Speaker 2: You know.
- 33:52Speaker 3: So I think to me and and the last one
- 33:55Speaker 3: I make is like I think they've adopted a euro
- 33:58Speaker 3: style of basketball. And it's not the it's just it
- 34:01Speaker 3: lacks umph, it lacks aggression. To me, it's too finesse.
- 34:05Speaker 3: So NBA games are just unless it's the playoffs, is
- 34:08Speaker 3: terrible to watch in mys And.
- 34:10Speaker 5: That's exactly I'm going to add to his point because
- 34:13Speaker 5: you know, I used to love the NBA whenever Michael Jordan.
- 34:16Speaker 5: I'm dating myself and it's okay, But you know, when
- 34:18Speaker 5: Michael Jordan, you had the Chicago Bulls, that era of
- 34:22Speaker 5: basketball that was exciting to watch. They had that whole team,
- 34:24Speaker 5: you knew all you know, the Pippin and all the players.
- 34:27Speaker 5: I used to love it. And then, like you just said,
- 34:30Speaker 5: it's gotten monotonous, like there's no emotion, there's no It's
- 34:34Speaker 5: like they're just they're going through the motions of making
- 34:36Speaker 5: three pointers and then they just go back and forth
- 34:38Speaker 5: and you just don't see, like you said, the umph,
- 34:41Speaker 5: I don't know, the attraction to me is not there anymore?
- 34:45Speaker 4: Does that make?
- 34:47Speaker 3: Are we making the case that the true identity of
- 34:51Speaker 3: the big man down low is what we're losing, is
- 34:54Speaker 3: what we've lost? And look, I would say that, but
- 34:57Speaker 3: I also would say the little man right because now
- 35:00Speaker 3: remember back in the day, like an Alan Everson, right,
- 35:03Speaker 3: what made him so phenomenal? A special number when he's
- 35:06Speaker 3: a tremendous athlete, he was quick, he would take you
- 35:09Speaker 3: off the drivell then what he's not necessarily just gonna
- 35:11Speaker 3: always settle for the three. He's going right to the rack,
- 35:15Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying. So having the little man
- 35:16Speaker 3: hands and throw off, so having a little so having
- 35:20Speaker 3: the Isaiah Thomas is the Alan Everson's. The Stevie franchises,
- 35:24Speaker 3: the Stefan Marberrys, you know, having those guys who were
- 35:27Speaker 3: phenomenal athletes, maybe a bit undersized that but have the
- 35:31Speaker 3: quickness and the savvy to take you off the drivel
- 35:34Speaker 3: to you know, shoot it around, you shoot it over,
- 35:36Speaker 3: you go over you, you know, the fancy driveling moves.
- 35:39Speaker 3: It made it so exciting because you got like a
- 35:42Speaker 3: sort of a dichotomy of big and little, fast and slow,
- 35:45Speaker 3: you know, sort of you know, quick and strong. So
- 35:48Speaker 3: you got all those flavors within basketball. Now now everybody
- 35:53Speaker 3: is like a white wall. They're just the same or
- 35:56Speaker 3: the same color wall. Everybody's just the same.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Do you do you do you blame? Do you blame
- 36:00Speaker 4: Magic for that? Because he's that six to six point guard,
- 36:05Speaker 4: one of the early.
- 36:05Speaker 3: Guys to be able to six nine and being able
- 36:10Speaker 3: to handle the ball bringing.
- 36:11Speaker 4: It up the court. So all of a sudden, will
- 36:15Speaker 4: we will not speak ill of Magic? John? No, I
- 36:20Speaker 4: think he's great. I'm just saying so. Now everybody wanted
- 36:24Speaker 4: to be him, so even the big guy. But let
- 36:26Speaker 4: me ask you this, he was like, I don't want
- 36:28Speaker 4: to go down there like work kareem up. But Magic
- 36:30Speaker 4: did that. So during the rookie year, the first the
- 36:33Speaker 4: Championship that he won the rookie year. Keeam was hurt.
- 36:36Speaker 3: So what did they do?
- 36:37Speaker 4: Magic gets your butt in the post and he's shooting
- 36:39Speaker 4: hook shots. He is in the post and number.
- 36:41Speaker 3: One and I think the second one match he played
- 36:43Speaker 3: with Flair, right, so he's coming down the court, he's
- 36:46Speaker 3: behind the back. No look all this it was. It
- 36:48Speaker 3: was beautiful to watch. Now they don't have that sort
- 36:51Speaker 3: of flair and that sort of joy playing the game.
- 36:54Speaker 3: It's like, like I said, it seems like people just
- 36:56Speaker 3: going through the motion.
- 36:57Speaker 5: Yeah, and can I throw this out there. I'm not
- 36:59Speaker 5: really sure if they could play a factor in it
- 37:01Speaker 5: or not. But the reason that maybe the viewing the
- 37:04Speaker 5: numbers have dropped is because there's a variety of other
- 37:07Speaker 5: sports that are available to watch that are more exciting
- 37:09Speaker 5: at that time. I mean, you've got now that you've
- 37:11Speaker 5: got the college football Championships going on till what January twentieth, Now,
- 37:15Speaker 5: that's got to take some viewers away. You've got you know,
- 37:20Speaker 5: college basketball starts early, and so that's a competition for them.
- 37:24Speaker 5: So it's it's not only the product that they're putting
- 37:26Speaker 5: out there on the court, but it's the the other
- 37:28Speaker 5: products that are available that they're probably more attractive to viewers.
- 37:33Speaker 4: But I don't know, Well, I agree with that, but yeah,
- 37:36Speaker 4: because I'm going to make the case. You know, you
- 37:39Speaker 4: look at Caitlin.
- 37:39Speaker 3: Clark like she's carrying she's she took some college viewership
- 37:47Speaker 3: to the WNBA. So so, but I think the style
- 37:51Speaker 3: of play for the WNBA, if you've been watching basketball
- 37:56Speaker 3: for a lot a long time, it's just it's better.
- 37:58Speaker 4: It is, you know what I'm saying.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Again, They're playing exciting. Yeah, they're playing position basketball. You're
- 38:04Speaker 3: gonna have a big, you're gonna have a small, you're
- 38:06Speaker 3: gonna have dump it in the post. You're gonna have
- 38:07Speaker 3: somebody playing with the back to the basket, I mean outside.
- 38:10Speaker 3: If they could, you know, dunk or readily, I think
- 38:13Speaker 3: it would just surpass the the NBA game or had
- 38:16Speaker 3: the capacity to. I just think, like I said, it's
- 38:18Speaker 3: just I would agree that there's a lot more viewing options,
- 38:22Speaker 3: So I think that can contribute to some of the decline.
- 38:25Speaker 3: But when you're talking about a fifty percent dip, that
- 38:29Speaker 3: that's that's I would be alarmed by that, and I
- 38:31Speaker 3: think they are. I think they are because they're doing
- 38:33Speaker 3: like the player they're doing, like the playing tournaments and
- 38:36Speaker 3: different things of that nature to try to up to
- 38:38Speaker 3: try to make it more exciting. So I just think again,
- 38:41Speaker 3: to me, I don't think it's a matter of anything
- 38:44Speaker 3: other To me, it's just the style of play. When
- 38:46Speaker 3: watching Michael Jordan, I would watch Michael Jordan or Kobe
- 38:49Speaker 3: Brown or Shock. I'm watching them all season. I'm not
- 38:52Speaker 3: just waiting to the playoffs. I'm watching Alan Iverson all season,
- 38:55Speaker 3: and you could see them doing different things. They weren't
- 38:58Speaker 3: just shooting. They you know, they were passing, they were
- 39:01Speaker 3: playing defense, they were doing that. And now I don't
- 39:06Speaker 3: see that hunger. I see a great skill set. I mean,
- 39:12Speaker 3: everybody can shoot threes, but but if I'm Kareem, I'm not.
- 39:17Speaker 3: I don't have to worry about shooting the three. I'm
- 39:18Speaker 3: not ever gonna be out that far. If I'm out
- 39:21Speaker 3: that far, I'm on my way to the bench. That's
- 39:23Speaker 3: what I'm saying. Think of Kareem now, if Korea was
- 39:25Speaker 3: playing now, he'd be in the three point Yeah he
- 39:27Speaker 3: was shooting, right. I Mean, it's fun to watch for
- 39:29Speaker 3: a while, but it's like, dang, well, you always a
- 39:31Speaker 3: hook shot.
- 39:32Speaker 5: And let's face it, don't you think the season is
- 39:34Speaker 5: a bit lengthy?
- 39:35Speaker 4: Would?
- 39:36Speaker 5: Yeah? I mean I think it's just I think I
- 39:38Speaker 5: think after a while, you know, unless you're a hometown
- 39:41Speaker 5: fan of some of these teams, it's just it's the
- 39:43Speaker 5: same stuff over and over, and there's so many games.
- 39:46Speaker 5: And they start in November and they end in June.
- 39:48Speaker 5: I mean, that's a long over season. What is it
- 39:51Speaker 5: They start in October?
- 39:52Speaker 3: I think they started October's I would have totally agree
- 39:57Speaker 3: with that. I say started Christmas, yes, and in May. Well,
- 40:02Speaker 3: I'm going to say this, I'm I'm totally against the
- 40:07Speaker 3: crossover of sports. Like football should have it season, Basketball
- 40:13Speaker 3: have it season, you know, just to allow folks an
- 40:16Speaker 3: opportunity to to actually watch what they want because you
- 40:20Speaker 3: got everything, like you there's there's a period of time
- 40:23Speaker 3: where like everything is on television, Like you.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Got basketball, you got baseball, you got football. Like, no,
- 40:28Speaker 4: I don't want that. I don't want that.
- 40:32Speaker 5: It's a nightmare. If you have ADHD.
- 40:36Speaker 3: WHOA, I don't know what to do, you know, and
- 40:39Speaker 3: I just I really don't think, you know, And again
- 40:43Speaker 3: when you start talking about how many games, did you
- 40:45Speaker 3: say basketball?
- 40:47Speaker 5: How many money.
- 40:51Speaker 4: A lot.
- 40:54Speaker 5: I mean, really, we know it's money, but now that
- 40:57Speaker 5: the decline is coming, you know, with the line of viewership,
- 41:00Speaker 5: you've also got to decline in the you know, the
- 41:03Speaker 5: financial part of it. So maybe they'll consider that.
- 41:06Speaker 3: I don't know, I seriously, seriously doubt, but they would do.
- 41:12Speaker 3: I think the last increase it. Yeah, the last thing
- 41:15Speaker 3: they would do is I would think they would decrease
- 41:17Speaker 3: the number of games. I mean when we talk about that,
- 41:20Speaker 3: I mean I think that's even true for like the NFL.
- 41:22Speaker 3: We don't need more games per se, but I would
- 41:25Speaker 3: be for like sixty games. I think that would make
- 41:28Speaker 3: it way more competitive. I think, you know, shortening that
- 41:31Speaker 3: season would be Again, they're not going to do it.
- 41:33Speaker 3: I mean I've seen one I forgot. I was looking
- 41:36Speaker 3: on social media or something and I won't name a team,
- 41:39Speaker 3: but they were just giving away Darner giving away the tickets,
- 41:42Speaker 3: I mean tickets five bucks for decent you know, basketball tickets.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Because again, when you're talking about these games in October, November, December, January, February,
- 41:50Speaker 3: it's just like watching paint rite.
- 41:52Speaker 4: It's not very good well and you don't and it
- 41:55Speaker 4: doesn't even matter at that point. It doesn't even matter.
- 41:58Speaker 4: It's not it.
- 41:59Speaker 3: You don't even know who's gonna really truly be in
- 42:01Speaker 3: the playoffs until literally it's like a month or so
- 42:05Speaker 3: out and then people getting locked in.
- 42:09Speaker 4: I'm not trying to I can't. I can't give you
- 42:12Speaker 4: that every night. I just can't. I just gotta be
- 42:15Speaker 4: like a super fan.
- 42:16Speaker 3: And then you then you add college and god forbid
- 42:20Speaker 3: if you if you watch how if you're in the community,
- 42:22Speaker 3: you go to see your high school, you ain't got
- 42:25Speaker 3: a chance to it.
- 42:26Speaker 4: That's a lot of basketball, man, that's a lot about it.
- 42:29Speaker 3: And I would say, like college basketball is, you know,
- 42:31Speaker 3: it's it's generally always pretty good just because they're on
- 42:34Speaker 3: a tighter time crush. But even that's kind of lost
- 42:37Speaker 3: his mustard just because of the fluidity of the transfer situation.
- 42:41Speaker 3: You don't have those guys like the Pittsnoggles right, who
- 42:44Speaker 3: are saying you got to know the names and the
- 42:47Speaker 3: personalities and kind of how they play. So now you
- 42:51Speaker 3: I think what sports have done with transfer almost it
- 42:54Speaker 3: forces you to be like an insider right where you
- 42:57Speaker 3: got to like read all the news, you gotta you gotta,
- 43:00Speaker 3: you know, be a yes being subscriber to the insider
- 43:02Speaker 3: to figure out what's going on.
- 43:04Speaker 4: And I don't.
- 43:05Speaker 3: I don't don't have that type of time and energy
- 43:07Speaker 3: to I don't know if most of the problem I'm
- 43:11Speaker 3: going to say, I don't think most people do. And
- 43:13Speaker 3: and I do think that it's part of that drop
- 43:18Speaker 3: because so, I mean, yeah, you got so many games,
- 43:21Speaker 3: So what if I miss this game? So what if
- 43:24Speaker 3: I miss that game? We got months to go, you know,
- 43:29Speaker 3: And I mean, really, football, you're thinking, Okay, you got
- 43:33Speaker 3: sixteen weeks, you can miss a couple. You can you
- 43:36Speaker 3: may can miss a couple games, but if it's your
- 43:38Speaker 3: team and you love them, you trying to get to
- 43:40Speaker 3: as many of those games because you only got a
- 43:42Speaker 3: few TV games.
- 43:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:44Speaker 3: One of the things that you know, again that this
- 43:46Speaker 3: isn't coming from me, but a lot of like the
- 43:49Speaker 3: former NBA players, one of their complaints again their insiders,
- 43:53Speaker 3: they're more closer to the game. But one of the
- 43:55Speaker 3: things they said this is like it seems to be
- 43:57Speaker 3: like a lack of caring about the games. I'm the
- 44:00Speaker 3: current players. They gave one example where you know, Paul George,
- 44:03Speaker 3: I think they say he has this a horrible game.
- 44:06Speaker 3: They lost big and he's on the next night, he's
- 44:09Speaker 3: like doing his podcast, you know, and just talking about
- 44:12Speaker 3: just as far as the love and the intensity, the passion,
- 44:15Speaker 3: as you mentioned, Lisa, about the game is sort of
- 44:18Speaker 3: like that's coming from their perspective. So I think when
- 44:21Speaker 3: you look at like a decline, it's you know, it's
- 44:23Speaker 3: a bunch of different And I think, and I think
- 44:26Speaker 3: you have to be careful when you start talking about, quote,
- 44:31Speaker 3: getting into the media, why you're doing something, you.
- 44:34Speaker 4: Know, like while you're playing the game.
- 44:36Speaker 3: I don't because because that's not that's not really a
- 44:39Speaker 3: good look, you know, big, big track, because are you
- 44:46Speaker 3: worried about it?
- 44:47Speaker 4: Are you worried about the game? Are you worried about it?
- 44:50Speaker 3: But again, everybody's doing that now, everybody like all these podcasts,
- 44:54Speaker 3: they have, the radio shows, some are on TV. It's
- 44:57Speaker 3: just like again, it's almost like basketball now is like
- 45:02Speaker 3: the you know, sort of the stepping stone to get
- 45:05Speaker 3: to somewhere else, as opposed to back in the day
- 45:08Speaker 3: it was the ultimate goal. Now, So I think again,
- 45:11Speaker 3: I just think particularly with basketball players because they again
- 45:14Speaker 3: they make a lot more money, they're a lot more visible,
- 45:17Speaker 3: so their opportunities to do things in the media and
- 45:21Speaker 3: or otherwise is greater probably than any other sport.
- 45:24Speaker 4: Right, what what basketball? What's the best for you? Hollis?
- 45:34Speaker 4: What's the when if you said you had to watch
- 45:36Speaker 4: a basketball game, not not teams, but just you were
- 45:40Speaker 4: going to watch a basketball game at what level?
- 45:42Speaker 3: Would you want to watch it? From college all the
- 45:45Speaker 3: way down? Let's say the high school? I'll probably if
- 45:48Speaker 3: I had to. I mean that's kind of I mean,
- 45:50Speaker 3: of course you always want to watch the NBA, right,
- 45:52Speaker 3: but all things being equal, Like if I'm just looking
- 45:54Speaker 3: at passion, intensity, drive, like high school would be for me?
- 46:00Speaker 4: Or none?
- 46:00Speaker 3: Like an elite high school like those those two elite
- 46:03Speaker 3: high schools going Like if you had like the Oak
- 46:05Speaker 3: Hills and the Honeyton Preps going to gainst your eyes
- 46:08Speaker 3: in acadedy, y'all want to see one of that?
- 46:09Speaker 4: That's why I want to do include like the high
- 46:11Speaker 4: school a least? What would you?
- 46:12Speaker 5: What do you think I like college?
- 46:13Speaker 4: Like?
- 46:14Speaker 5: Yeah, especially like marsh madness. That's my favorite time of year.
- 46:17Speaker 5: That that's fun.
- 46:18Speaker 4: And see, I would it was easy. It would be
- 46:20Speaker 4: easy for me. It would be high school just simply
- 46:23Speaker 4: because I like the idea of those kids out there
- 46:26Speaker 4: actually trying to work to get to something, to make
- 46:30Speaker 4: themselves into something, and which is now crazy because you
- 46:34Speaker 4: start talking about high school, that's probably the least that's
- 46:36Speaker 4: the least money maker money making sport. Then college and
- 46:43Speaker 4: the pros.
- 46:44Speaker 3: And then too, I would I would say definitely, that's
- 46:47Speaker 3: just a close because I mean a lot of those
- 46:49Speaker 3: that's a fun just time. You know, it's not like
- 46:51Speaker 3: football where you're just sitting out march madness. Them guys
- 46:54Speaker 3: ain't sitting out there playing, you know what I mean.
- 46:56Speaker 5: And then there's a lot of upsets. You always have
- 46:57Speaker 5: those Cinderella teams. That's fun to watch those. It's when
- 47:00Speaker 5: they beat a you know, an elite team.
- 47:02Speaker 3: Not to jump off off track, but I heard this,
- 47:04Speaker 3: I think this is correct that that case the Chiefs,
- 47:09Speaker 3: they sent all their players down.
- 47:12Speaker 5: That's a problem.
- 47:14Speaker 3: Yeah, what happened was because they lost, then the Bengals,
- 47:17Speaker 3: who were on a five game winning streak they did
- 47:19Speaker 3: they missed the playoffs. So I think if Kansas City
- 47:22Speaker 3: would have won, then it would have propelled the Bengals
- 47:25Speaker 3: into the playoffs because they so.
- 47:26Speaker 4: Maybe that was why that conversation came up, and.
- 47:28Speaker 5: How disappointing for Let's say a Kansas City chief fan
- 47:31Speaker 5: lives in that area for the Denver game, and they
- 47:34Speaker 5: go to that game to see the Chiefs play, and
- 47:36Speaker 5: every single starter is out, Like, but.
- 47:41Speaker 3: If you're a fan, though you want to, you don't
- 47:43Speaker 3: want to see your guys get hurt. I had this conversation,
- 47:47Speaker 3: you know, I mean, I had this conversation earlier, and
- 47:49Speaker 3: I said the scenario was, Okay, so you you got
- 47:55Speaker 3: your daughter and she's a die hard Mahmes fan, right,
- 47:59Speaker 3: and you're driving to Kansas City to go see a game.
- 48:02Speaker 3: You're driving there, You're gonna drive back just so she
- 48:04Speaker 3: can see him play. Ain't Nobody said nothing that he
- 48:07Speaker 3: ain't playing. And then all of a sudden you show up,
- 48:10Speaker 3: you sitting, you to got front row seats.
- 48:13Speaker 4: She's excited. They're all out on the field warming up.
- 48:17Speaker 3: Then they come out for the first player on offense
- 48:20Speaker 3: and the whole starting offense is on the side.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Again, I get it.
- 48:24Speaker 5: I got to be what do you say to you
- 48:26Speaker 5: spent the money, you gotta bee.
- 48:29Speaker 3: But you gotta be an ESPN insider and an analyst.
- 48:32Speaker 3: And if you know that, you're gonna know that because
- 48:36Speaker 3: that's what sports are now. You gotta gotta read everything,
- 48:39Speaker 3: you gotta do everything. You gotta make a conscious decision.
- 48:42Speaker 3: You just can't do spur of the moment stuff like that.
- 48:44Speaker 3: No more so that don't work. Now, well do you think?
- 48:47Speaker 4: Do you think?
- 48:48Speaker 3: You know? But all in all serious, that sucks for fans.
- 48:50Speaker 3: But really, if I'm a fan, though, but if I'm
- 48:53Speaker 3: a fan, though, you're gonna stay with it. I'm almost
- 48:56Speaker 3: I'm almost taking a view as a player. We're moving
- 48:59Speaker 3: on to next week. We got bigger fist of Fry's
- 49:01Speaker 3: kind of conversation.
- 49:02Speaker 5: I never liked that approach though, I don't. I mean,
- 49:04Speaker 5: even regardless of the fans. I think it's when when
- 49:06Speaker 5: you set out the starters it made backfire. I mean,
- 49:09Speaker 5: we've seen look what happened with the collegiate championships. There's
- 49:12Speaker 5: got the four teams they got to buy. They they
- 49:15Speaker 5: all lost. So sometimes it's not always the best thing.
- 49:18Speaker 3: I can remember a couple of different times when we
- 49:21Speaker 3: were toward the end, we knew we were going into
- 49:23Speaker 3: the playoffs. You played like that, like a half or something,
- 49:28Speaker 3: you know, but you wasn't like you weren't not going
- 49:31Speaker 3: to play at all.
- 49:33Speaker 4: You know, they weren't going to like put the whole
- 49:34Speaker 4: second team in.
- 49:35Speaker 5: That was not gonna I mean that happened the whole
- 49:37Speaker 5: They never Mahome.
- 49:40Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 49:41Speaker 5: I forget.
- 49:42Speaker 3: You got a Carson Wentz, I think that's his name. Yeah,
- 49:45Speaker 3: he started the whole game. No wonder it was a
- 49:48Speaker 3: quarterback if I got them wrong. Yeah, well, but but
- 49:51Speaker 3: basically nobody else that nobody else playing, I don't think.
- 49:56Speaker 4: I mean, and again you I mean, you got to
- 49:59Speaker 4: do what you think it's best for your team, you know,
- 50:04Speaker 4: But do you do But let me ask this question.
- 50:06Speaker 5: You never know?
- 50:06Speaker 4: Do you do you lose something? Or is that just
- 50:09Speaker 4: like did you just call that about?
- 50:11Speaker 3: I think I think a team like that who's been
- 50:13Speaker 3: in the championship for the last four or five years,
- 50:16Speaker 3: it doesn't matter to them. But I think maybe a
- 50:18Speaker 3: new team, like if you're emerging to that level, you
- 50:21Speaker 3: probably go ahead and play at least a half or
- 50:23Speaker 3: something like that because you don't want to lose the momentum.
- 50:25Speaker 3: But for like a Kansas City, they've been there, done that,
- 50:27Speaker 3: they will before that.
- 50:28Speaker 4: But have they have they ever done this before?
- 50:30Speaker 3: I think that I mean that I don't remember. I
- 50:33Speaker 3: don't know if they like set guys out totally. But
- 50:35Speaker 3: I'm towards the end of the season, I'm sure they
- 50:37Speaker 3: played like a half or something like that.
- 50:38Speaker 5: And hasn't Mahome's been questionable like with his leg or
- 50:42Speaker 5: something big up.
- 50:45Speaker 3: They played a lot of ball games the last four
- 50:47Speaker 3: or five years, so I don't I'm not mad at him.
- 50:49Speaker 3: But again from a pan, perfective ain't great, see I think,
- 50:53Speaker 3: and again you you you gotta do what you got
- 50:55Speaker 3: to do to win. And but on the other side
- 50:58Speaker 3: of it, you know, the fans themselves, they don't have
- 51:03Speaker 3: to be they don't have to they're the losers.
- 51:05Speaker 4: Yeah, you know.
- 51:08Speaker 3: And we also got the NFL plaus We've got the
- 51:10Speaker 3: collegiate playoffs coming up too.
- 51:12Speaker 5: Oh yes, so that's that's the next exciting thing besides
- 51:15Speaker 5: the weather we've had the past week or so. But anyway,
- 51:19Speaker 5: I thought I would lead off with this because this
- 51:22Speaker 5: is a famous Bear Bryant quote that I came across
- 51:25Speaker 5: that offense sales tickets, but defense wins championships. I thought
- 51:29Speaker 5: I have heard that, and I've heard that a lot
- 51:32Speaker 5: of you because when you look at the final four,
- 51:34Speaker 5: which is this is the final four of the college
- 51:36Speaker 5: football world. Who are it is? Ohio State, Texas, Penn State,
- 51:41Speaker 5: Notre Dame. Actually, Penn State Notre Dame play tomorrow evening
- 51:44Speaker 5: at seven thirty, and then on Friday you have the
- 51:46Speaker 5: Texas Ohio State matchup. But what was interesting that I
- 51:49Speaker 5: came across was that all those teams were ranked among
- 51:52Speaker 5: the top eight defenses nationally all season, which is unusual
- 51:57Speaker 5: because we've talked about this, don't We feel like it's
- 51:59Speaker 5: more the college play is more based on an offensive.
- 52:01Speaker 4: Approach a couple of years for sure.
- 52:04Speaker 5: So I thought that was pretty interesting. But yeah, so
- 52:08Speaker 5: we're looking at the Buckeyes have the top total defense
- 52:12Speaker 5: and scoring defense in college sports.
- 52:14Speaker 4: So so what matchup are you most excited to to
- 52:18Speaker 4: look at?
- 52:21Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 52:21Speaker 5: I mean I really think him again again, that you've
- 52:24Speaker 5: got tomorrow evening's Notre Dame and Penn State, and so
- 52:28Speaker 5: that that's uh. I think Penn State they shut down.
- 52:32Speaker 5: I think Boise State. And then that's the Orange Bowl
- 52:35Speaker 5: because you know how they've tied the big balls into this.
- 52:37Speaker 4: It's in Florida, that's yes.
- 52:39Speaker 5: And then the buck Eyes in Texas play on Friday,
- 52:42Speaker 5: and that's a Cotton Bowl Texas.
- 52:45Speaker 3: So weather won't be I see, I'm interested in that
- 52:47Speaker 3: one because again, weather won't be a factor necessarily. I
- 52:50Speaker 3: think it's going to be a little cooler in Texas,
- 52:53Speaker 3: but Texas almost has home foot advantage in a little
- 52:56Speaker 3: bit you can make that's be interesting in And like
- 53:00Speaker 3: I said, I like how Ohio they bounced back from
- 53:02Speaker 3: the Michigan lost earlier, which is always their super Bowl
- 53:04Speaker 3: every year that game at least, so I'm in. I'm
- 53:08Speaker 3: most inerrated interested in that matchup. Which one Texas and Ohio.
- 53:12Speaker 5: Yeah, in Ohio state's dominating, dominating the playoffs.
- 53:17Speaker 4: Ohio high on Texas take I want to I just
- 53:24Speaker 4: want to make.
- 53:26Speaker 3: Yeah in Ohio in Texas don't generally that's not two
- 53:30Speaker 3: schools that play a lot of games between one another.
- 53:33Speaker 3: Penn State not the game, Notre Dame. They played some games, yes,
- 53:36Speaker 3: the who do you think? Who do you think is
- 53:38Speaker 3: gonna win that? Penn State Notre Dame. I like it's
- 53:41Speaker 3: gonna be tough. I like I like Notre Dame. I
- 53:43Speaker 3: like the road that they're on, So I think they'll
- 53:45Speaker 3: take that one.
- 53:47Speaker 5: If we're looking at the ni O money, we're definitely.
- 53:50Speaker 4: Hut there. I was gonna say that. I mean, you
- 53:56Speaker 4: gotta go with that.
- 53:56Speaker 5: Who got think?
- 53:58Speaker 4: Maybe that's why you can basic win the off. Now,
- 54:03Speaker 4: if I was gonna make a bet, I'm going on
- 54:04Speaker 4: the nil. Who got the most? We got the most?
- 54:07Speaker 4: All right, ladies and.
- 54:08Speaker 3: Gentlemen, We're gonna get out of here. Anything hollis anything Lisa?
