- 0:00Rags became a record. There's a story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad.
- 0:07We're 1171 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:10yourself a better story because the most important story you
- 0:13hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:15This message is dedicated to Frank Soma, sales trainer and
- 0:18speaker, who's been drilling one line into me for years, which is
- 0:22make a commitment, make it public, make it happen.
- 0:26Here's the upgrade You think the safest place to keep a
- 0:29commitment is private. But upgraded thinking knows the
- 0:32commitment you're brave enough to make public is the one that
- 0:35eventually becomes your masterpiece.
- 0:38Here's the story. I have a couple of Dolly Parton
- 0:41stories to share this weekend. Not many public figures can be
- 0:45isolated by their first name. Dolly is part of that exclusive
- 0:49club. Her career spanned more than six
- 0:51decades. Her work and service earned her
- 0:54the title Queen of Country. US flags have been ordered to
- 0:57half staff for the week the Empire State Building was lit
- 1:00pink Grand Old Opry is dedicating today's show to her.
- 1:03Buckingham Palace's Coldstream Guards performed at 9:00 to 5:00
- 1:07at Changing the Guard. And there's a renewed push in
- 1:09Tennessee to rename Nashville's airport for her.
- 1:13Dolly Parton grew up in a one room cabin in the Smoky
- 1:16Mountains of Tennessee. 1 of 12 kids dirt poor, 1 winter.
- 1:21Her mother didn't have money for a coat, so she made one out of
- 1:24scraps of rags sewn together patch by patch.
- 1:28While she sewed, she told young Dolly the story of Joseph's coat
- 1:32of many colors from the Bible. By the time it was finished,
- 1:35Dolly didn't see rags. She saw proof she was rich in
- 1:38something money can't buy. That was the commitment.
- 1:42A mother with nothing deciding her daughter would be covered in
- 1:46love instead of going without. Then came the hard part.
- 1:49Dolly had to make it public. She put that coat on and walked
- 1:53into a school room full of kids wearing real coats, store bought
- 1:56coats, and they laughed at her. They mocked her.
- 1:59Somebody locked her in the coat closet.
- 2:01Making it public didn't feel like a victory that day.
- 2:04It felt like exposure, felt like the wrong move.
- 2:08But Dolly didn't take the coat off and bury the memory.
- 2:11Years later, she made it happen. She wrote a song about that day
- 2:15titled Coat of Many Colors and turned a memory of getting
- 2:19mocked in a rag coat into one of the most beloved songs in
- 2:22American Music. Out of more than 3000 songs
- 2:26she's written, she is called it her favorite.
- 2:30The thing she got laughed at for wearing became the thing she's
- 2:34most loved for writing. That's the whole sequence.
- 2:37In order. Her mother made the commitment,
- 2:39Dolly made it public at the cost of getting mocked for it, and
- 2:43years down the road, she made it happen, turned a humiliation
- 2:47into a hit, and rags into a record.
- 2:52Frank's line isn't just a sales tactic, it's a life pattern.
- 2:56Commit to something, say it, wear it, show it before you know
- 3:01how it ends. Let people laugh if they're
- 3:04going to laugh. The public part is never
- 3:07comfortable, it's just necessary.
- 3:10The better story to tell yourself is I've made the
- 3:13commitment, made it public and made it happen.
- 3:18Tell me a story of turning ridicule into something you're
- 3:20proud of to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:23Send someone a text and ask them what's the thing you got laughed
- 3:26at that you're proudest of. Now you can get a free copy of
