- 0:00Hello, hello, welcome back everybody.
- 0:01Welcome back to the Cat Scan Guru podcast.
- 0:04So glad to be doing podcast episodes again.
- 0:09I know sometimes when it comes to being a content creator,
- 0:12being a podcaster, anything, a YouTube, sometimes the burnout
- 0:17factor is real. And sometimes we do need to take
- 0:20a pause and just kind of, you know, get out of the social
- 0:23media space and just so we can come back fresh and just
- 0:29passionate about what we do. And sometimes these breaks are
- 0:32needed. Me for example, you know, I am a
- 0:34mom to special needs kids and you know, with running a
- 0:38business and just doing all the things in my life, it is a lot.
- 0:44And sometimes we just have to take a little step back because
- 0:46the burn off factor is real. Like I said.
- 0:48So really strange weather going on in the state of Illinois.
- 0:52Like today it's like 60° and it's February and usually it's
- 0:56snowing and cold here in the state, usually in February.
- 1:00I am not a Midwest person by any chance because I grew up in the
- 1:04West Coast and one of these days I hope to get back to the West
- 1:08Coast because this is just not my jam.
- 1:10So let's do a little housekeeping before we get into
- 1:13today's episode. So if you guys haven't been
- 1:17following me on TikTok, I strongly recommend that you
- 1:20follow me on TikTok because I have announced that I have
- 1:24finally released the core CT protocols guide.
- 1:29So this is a survival like guide for you new CT technologists or
- 1:35even if you're new to traveling, because I know lots of texts,
- 1:40you know, they get their one to two years experience and they go
- 1:42out there and travel. So this is for you as well.
- 1:45Now disclaimer, this is merely a reference.
- 1:49It is not to replace your site's protocol, radiologist
- 1:53recommendations or anything of that sort.
- 1:56This is something that you can use as a reference to help you
- 1:59within your CT training and to make you be the best
- 2:03technologist you can. So I have been working on this
- 2:07for months, making sure that I give you just the nitty gritty
- 2:11didn't want to make it very complicated.
- 2:13I know some of my mutuals on TikTok did not know that I had
- 2:16released this and they were like, where did I miss this?
- 2:19So I did do a video about that of responding to one of my
- 2:23mutual's comments and she's awesome in the space too.
- 2:26So if you are interested in this guide, which I know once I
- 2:30released it last week, 20 people bought like just right out of
- 2:34the gate. And so I have a transition to a
- 2:38print on demand because the demand is getting higher and I
- 2:42cannot spend a lot of time trying to make these guides
- 2:46because it takes a lot of time and you know, as far as being a
- 2:50mom and things like that. So I have streamlined all that.
- 2:53So if you are interested in the guide, so there's two ways that
- 2:59you can get this, you can get a physical copy of the guide or
- 3:01you can get a digital version, either one that you choose.
- 3:05You will also get 2 courses that I go ahead and teach.
- 3:11So one course is a common CT exams and protocols and the
- 3:16second one is a course designed to talk about all about contrast
- 3:21media. Along with that, you will also
- 3:24get a 10 episode bonus audio series.
- 3:27It's the CT tech cheat code where you can dominate your
- 3:30training. I drop 10 episodes on some
- 3:32things that you can dominate your training with.
- 3:35So you will get all three of those things inside a private
- 3:39school community. OK, so once you purchase it,
- 3:42you'll get the link to join the community and start, you know,
- 3:46learning something as far as protocols, exams and contrast
- 3:51media and how to dominate your training.
- 3:53So it's all on demand courses. There's an app for the school
- 3:56room so you can make it on the go and listen and whichever 1
- 4:02you choose. So if you choose the digital
- 4:04version, it's 4499. If you choose the physical copy
- 4:09of the guide along with the courses and everything, it is
- 4:115499. If you're interested in that,
- 4:14the link is in the show notes and you can go ahead and get
- 4:17your learn on with CT. So super excited about this.
- 4:20It took me a while to kind of get this all together so I can
- 4:24release it so it would be available to everybody.
- 4:26Felt that there was a need in it and when there is a need, I tend
- 4:30to go ahead and say, OK, what did I need as a technologist 20
- 4:35years ago that you know, the younger generation can use now.
- 4:39So, so far this has been a very, very good thing and I hope that
- 4:45everybody learns something from it.
- 4:47Also, I am putting up more educational videos on the
- 4:51YouTube channel, so make sure you guys check that out as well.
- 4:56I will be doing like breakdowns of every CT protocol on my
- 5:02YouTube channel. So that has been one of the
- 5:05things that has been requested along with like registry review
- 5:09study material. So those things are going to be
- 5:11going up on the YouTube channel as well.
- 5:14So make sure you guys subscribe to the podcast.
- 5:17I can't tell you how thankful I am for you guys continuing to
- 5:21listen and make sure you subscribe to the YouTube
- 5:23channel. Also follow along on TikTok
- 5:26because I post a lot of good TikTok content and make sure
- 5:29that you follow on Instagram. I'm starting to kind of revamp
- 5:32Instagram a little bit just so I don't burn out on that as well.
- 5:35So everything will be in the show notes.
- 5:37Make sure you guys check that out.
- 5:38So in today's episode we are going to be talking about CT
- 5:43isn't hard, it's just taught incorrectly.
- 5:46So what I'm going to be discussing is, is why CT feels
- 5:49overwhelming when it doesn't really need to be.
- 5:52Now we all know as technologist that CT is a very complex
- 5:57modality. There's a a lot of moving parts,
- 5:59there's a ship, ton of protocols.
- 6:02There is a lot going on when it comes to CT and it's very, very
- 6:06complex. It's very complicated sometimes
- 6:09when it really doesn't need to be OK.
- 6:12The problem is, is that we overemphasize a lot of
- 6:17memorization, OK? And we fail to give these
- 6:22technologists that are coming in transitioning especially a lot
- 6:25from X-ray or from CT programs or even a traveler that has
- 6:30never been to your site that we just overemphasize just
- 6:34memorizing everything with 0 structure, OK?
- 6:39And we're not really showing technologists how exams are done
- 6:44and not having them sit down behind the console, behind the
- 6:48computer and teaching them, OK, you're supposed to do XY and Z,
- 6:51you're supposed to do this. You're supposed to do that.
- 6:54We're not really honing in on that structure.
- 6:58And I think that's why a lot of technologists feel behind or
- 7:02they feel they weren't trained adequately.
- 7:05So another problem that we have is information overlap.
- 7:09Like I just explained, we have a ton of protocols.
- 7:13There is so much to remember. Do you think in your right mind
- 7:16that your brain can remember every single protocol that
- 7:19exists out there? Because there's so many
- 7:21protocols getting added, so many exams that are new that are
- 7:24getting added, that radiologists are saying, well, I went to this
- 7:28comp, we should be doing this. So there is a huge thing when it
- 7:32comes to overloading in information where your brain
- 7:37cannot remember everything, Scans that are inconsistent.
- 7:41So what I mean by inconsistent is it's the wrong exam for
- 7:45whatever clinical diagnosis it is.
- 7:47It is clipping, anatomy, field of view is off, patient
- 7:51centering is off. So things of that nature where
- 7:55scans are being inconsistently done or you're not scanning the
- 7:59appropriate body part, you're thinking you're knowing well,
- 8:02it's supposed to be this, but it should be this and not really
- 8:05clarifying or asking the questions.
- 8:08Is this really what we need to be doing?
- 8:10OK. And then my all time favorite,
- 8:12because I drill this into you, into your brain, and I talked
- 8:16about this in almost every TikTok video that I put out
- 8:19there is ISO centering. Listen, we have to get it right
- 8:23when it comes to ISO centering. That's why laser lights on a CD
- 8:26scanner exist because I see a lot of crappy ISO centering that
- 8:31you're just thinking, you know, where you're ISO centering and
- 8:34you're not doing it properly. I did an excellent TikTok video
- 8:38on patient centering, which I will go ahead and link in the
- 8:41show notes about how. And I give you a visual diagram
- 8:45of why patient centering is crucial and why your scouts need
- 8:48to be properly centered because radiation dose is a factor.
- 8:53And then making sure that all the anatomy that you need is in
- 8:57that field of view. Because if you just scout and
- 9:00say fuck it, this is just what I'm going to do and things lie
- 9:04outside of the scout. If you really think that the
- 9:06scanner is going to allow you to scan that it's out of the field
- 9:09of view. OK, which I probably will do a
- 9:11video about display field of view and scan field of view,
- 9:15because they're two different things.
- 9:16So that's why ISO centering is important.
- 9:19And there seems to be a huge problem with that or we're not
- 9:21teaching that properly. OK.
- 9:24And then falling, excuse me, you know, feeling like you're slow
- 9:28or you're unsure of yourself or that you're not going to catch
- 9:32up to everybody. Listen, I've said this in a
- 9:34previous podcast episode is that it doesn't matter your pace, OK?
- 9:40What matters is, is that you do the exam correctly, OK?
- 9:44And a lot of people's learning curves are different than
- 9:47others. Some people pick up the modality
- 9:50faster, some need more time. You have to operate at your own
- 9:54pace and you have to feel confident that, listen, I may
- 9:57not be too familiar with this exam, but I'm going to perfect
- 10:01it and I'm going to keep, you know, making sure that I do it
- 10:05correctly, making sure you get those reps in, that's what we
- 10:08call it, or making sure that you practice because that is the big
- 10:13thing. Repetition and practice makes
- 10:15you more of a experienced tech and you know what you're doing
- 10:20OK, now with all these pain points that I just explained.
- 10:24So what is the result of this? Well, you get burnt out, you
- 10:27panic, you get overwhelmed. Instead of feeling like you're
- 10:31learning, No, you feel behind, you feel short and you're not
- 10:35grasping the concept of why we do certain exams the way we do
- 10:40or why this volume of contrast is given or why we have to
- 10:44inject at this flow rate. That's what happens when we are
- 10:48not teaching the younger generation and the incoming
- 10:51technologists that want to learn the proper way.
- 10:55OK, we have to go back to the basics.
- 10:58CT training is very important. So the key takeaways is, is that
- 11:02we need to have structure in our training program.
- 11:06Sometimes I wish we could go back to those hospital based
- 11:08training programs because those seem to have worked.
- 11:12But of course because they're now branched out and there's CT
- 11:15programs in colleges, I think when they do their clinical
- 11:19rotation, I don't think it's enough.
- 11:20And that's just my own personal perspective.
- 11:23I think there needs to be more because when you are set and
- 11:27you're working in the hospital area, in a clinical area, you
- 11:31have to have some kind of structure to your training
- 11:33program. Have a checklist, have some kind
- 11:36of sign off where they say OK, you learn XY and ZI don't think
- 11:41six weeks of training is enough. I think between 8 to 12 weeks is
- 11:46sufficient to know your core exams, know exactly how to scan
- 11:50them because we do have core exams that get ordered like
- 11:53water and we scan these common exams in these core exams every
- 11:59single freaking day because use your, your head without your PE
- 12:01study and an abdomen pelvis with whether it's a CTA or
- 12:05regardless. That's why I incorporated this
- 12:09CT reference guide with core protocols to kind of, you know,
- 12:13educate you on what are some of the things that you will see
- 12:16while you're training. I think we have to go back to
- 12:20just the basics and making sure that our technologists know the
- 12:23basics of the core exams because those are the bread and butter.
- 12:28And that's where you need to start.
- 12:29What we need to do, what you need to do as a technologist to
- 12:32stop guessing, use proper structure when I meet proper
- 12:36structure, proper centering, use your laser light, making sure
- 12:40you set up that scout correctly. Make sure you have all the, you
- 12:45know, necessary anatomy in that field of view.
- 12:49So using proper structure and then making sure that, OK, This
- 12:53is why I'm doing this and take notes.
- 12:55Notes are very important. I can tell you in my office here
- 12:59where I'm recording my podcast, there are CT books sitting right
- 13:03here. There is a entire tub of
- 13:07radiology books, CT notes, you know, notebooks that I, that I
- 13:11acquired over the years. I have it all because sometimes
- 13:14I do have to refer back to them and say, OK, well, I know I, I
- 13:18remember this and XY and Z, let me look this up because my brain
- 13:22can't keep everything and I just can't remember everything.
- 13:25And plus, I'm over 45, so you can't expect me to remember.
- 13:28But stop guessing if you don't know, ask a question, OK?
- 13:32Ask a question. Make sure that, hey, this is
- 13:35what I don't understand. So that the technologist who's
- 13:38training you, educating you, they know how to go ahead and
- 13:41answer your question. If they don't, they can get
- 13:43somebody else who will. OK.
- 13:44So that's why I've created this guide.
- 13:46Make sure you check out the show notes for this guide because
- 13:49it'll guide you in the CT protocols that are core that you
- 13:54need to know as a new technologist because it is the
- 13:57basics and we need to have more structure in our training
- 14:00programs. So that is it for today's
- 14:03episode. So make sure you check out and
- 14:06grab the guide, whether it's digital or a physical copy along
- 14:09with those courses and that audio series.
- 14:12Everything is in the show notes. Make sure you follow me on
- 14:14TikTok for all your protocol needs and subscribe to the
- 14:18YouTube channel. Make sure you like, share
- 14:20comments, share this on podcast episode or even the show with
- 14:24somebody that needs to hear it. So thank you so much for joining
- 14:27me on this podcast episode and I will chat with you in the next
- 14:31episode.
