- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio.
- 0:22Speaker 2: What's Up, everybody?
- 0:23Speaker 1: This is Peter Schreger from This Season with Peter Schrager.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I will direct you to earlier in the week. On Tuesday,
- 0:30Speaker 1: I sat with Mike Gariffolo. We emptied our notebooks from
- 0:33Speaker 1: the Combine. It is meaty, it is great. It is
- 0:36Speaker 1: hitting all the teams that have quarterback needs. It's a
- 0:39Speaker 1: really good pod. Go listen to that. But I also
- 0:42Speaker 1: interviewed all these different decision makers at the at the
- 0:46Speaker 1: combine and we wanted to put them on this podcast feed.
- 0:48Speaker 1: We know you guys enjoy hearing from them. So with
- 0:51Speaker 1: no further ado, here are two different interviews. So we're
- 0:53Speaker 1: gonna go AFC West. Here's an interview with Sean Payton,
- 0:57Speaker 1: the head coach of the Denver Broncos and New Vegas
- 1:01Speaker 1: Raiders GM John Spytech. Enjoy all right, Sean Payton, did
- 1:06Speaker 1: you know that Bonix was the guy?
- 1:10Speaker 2: We didn't at that time. I would say that decision.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Probably was finalized or we felt real strong. Wasn't just
- 1:19Speaker 3: the He had a pro day on Friday and Saturday
- 1:21Speaker 3: we had a private workout, and I think that Saturday,
- 1:24Speaker 3: after this private workout, we felt like that was our target. Yeah,
- 1:29Speaker 3: this time, at this point in time, we didn't and
- 1:32Speaker 3: he really didn't throw well. Well, here are a couple
- 1:37Speaker 3: of things I can recall. So for years in our league,
- 1:42Speaker 3: the footballs were never broken in. They'd come right out
- 1:44Speaker 3: of the box. That's a challenge for a college quarterback.
- 1:47Speaker 3: I mean there's slippery, they're not broken in, and then
- 1:50Speaker 3: you get in here the temperature maybe is a little
- 1:52Speaker 3: cooler than you think. It's air conditioned, and so learning
- 1:57Speaker 3: all of those things getting adjusted to that. Don Yee's
- 2:01Speaker 3: obviously an agent that I've worked with throughout my career,
- 2:05Speaker 3: and he had this young uarterback, Tom Brady, and asked me,
- 2:07Speaker 3: can you call Tom and just tell them what to
- 2:10Speaker 3: expect at the combine?
- 2:11Speaker 2: And this was like a favor.
- 2:13Speaker 3: And yeah, there was no The prep that they have
- 2:17Speaker 3: now is so much different than just twenty years ago,
- 2:21Speaker 3: and the understanding of what's to be expected, how to
- 2:25Speaker 3: handle the interviews, how to handle the medical part of it,
- 2:28Speaker 3: how to handle these drills. I've seen players that have
- 2:30Speaker 3: bad ball skills that are outstanding through the gauntlet and
- 2:34Speaker 3: they've just worked on it so much. So again it
- 2:39Speaker 3: comes back to the medical information that's most important.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And then the interview.
- 2:43Speaker 1: All right, congrats another playoff season and we'll see what
- 2:45Speaker 1: happens next year. I appreciate you coming down here on
- 2:47Speaker 1: the field. It's nice to be down here and see
- 2:49Speaker 1: some live action.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Right, absolutely, yeah you could.
- 2:52Speaker 3: The suites are are fine, but back in the old
- 2:56Speaker 3: Hoosier Dome, this is where you went out the exit
- 2:58Speaker 3: and it was inflated.
- 2:59Speaker 2: See it's static.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Your hair was kind of static cling and everything.
- 3:03Speaker 2: That was good setup.
- 3:04Speaker 1: All right, Sean Payton to be here with the new
- 3:07Speaker 1: general manager of the Las Vegas Raiders, mister John Spytech.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Comes from Tampa Bay. John.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Busy week for everybody, but with all that stafford stuff
- 3:16Speaker 1: that was going on, he's going back to the Rams.
- 3:18Speaker 1: What's the week been like for the Raiders, Brass.
- 3:21Speaker 4: It's been a lot of fun. First time as a
- 3:23Speaker 4: GM here, working with the new staff, with Coach Carroll.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Just trying to keep up with coach. I mean, I'm
- 3:27Speaker 4: not going to say his age. I already got in
- 3:29Speaker 4: trouble for that once in the press conference. But you know,
- 3:31Speaker 4: it's been a lot of fun getting to know him,
- 3:32Speaker 4: getting to know Chip a little bit better, Patrick Graham,
- 3:34Speaker 4: and just trying to put a good team together and
- 3:37Speaker 4: exploring every guy that's out here throwing competing today. You know,
- 3:40Speaker 4: every avenue that we can get good players, We're going
- 3:42Speaker 4: to do that.
- 3:42Speaker 2: You mentioned Chip and Pete Carroll.
- 3:44Speaker 1: We also know Tom Brady is part of the ownership
- 3:46Speaker 1: group now and obviously this is your first year.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Is gm Brady? What's his role?
- 3:51Speaker 1: And really who are the different voices that are going
- 3:52Speaker 1: to be playing a part as we looked at this
- 3:54Speaker 1: another version new era of Raiders football.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I said the other day, W'd be I'd be
- 3:58Speaker 4: a special kind of idiot if I didn't use Tom
- 3:59Speaker 4: as a sounding board for certain places. And coach Carroll again,
- 4:02Speaker 4: obviously he's got such such an amazing amount of experience
- 4:05Speaker 4: and success in this league and really everywhere he's ever been.
- 4:08Speaker 4: So getting to know him better and kind of what
- 4:10Speaker 4: he's about, and really the first time that we connected
- 4:12Speaker 4: after I got hired and started to talk to him
- 4:14Speaker 4: about him coming on, we we speak the same football language,
- 4:18Speaker 4: even though we come from different, very different parts of
- 4:20Speaker 4: the country, and you know the age difference, but you know,
- 4:24Speaker 4: it's just it's just been an awesome experience so far,
- 4:25Speaker 4: getting to know all those guys, and what a resource
- 4:27Speaker 4: for me and my first go around with this. And
- 4:30Speaker 4: you know, again I'd be a fool not to talk
- 4:31Speaker 4: to those guys. And Chip obviously had success, have always
- 4:34Speaker 4: been so it's it's it's been great.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Raiders have a top ten pick.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Of course, we're here at the combine. How much do
- 4:39Speaker 1: you get out of being here body on the on
- 4:41Speaker 1: the floor, obviously looking at.
- 4:43Speaker 2: The guys close up.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Obviously there's a value for you guys, all of the
- 4:46Speaker 1: Raiders boxes filled with personnel.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Being here in person. It's great to see these kids
- 4:50Speaker 2: come out here and compete.
- 4:51Speaker 4: You know, these quarterbacks that haven't worked with these receivers,
- 4:53Speaker 4: they just let it rip.
- 4:54Speaker 2: They throw at these guys running fast.
- 4:56Speaker 4: I mean that what a group of running backs that
- 4:58Speaker 4: just you know, I don't know how many were sub
- 4:59Speaker 4: four five, but it was over ten I know that,
- 5:01Speaker 4: you know. And then the interview processes to me, the
- 5:04Speaker 4: critical just to get to see these guys in persons,
- 5:06Speaker 4: speak with them, ask them our questions, let them feel
- 5:08Speaker 4: at these feel their personalities, or they're going to be
- 5:10Speaker 4: a good ad to to the raiders.
- 5:12Speaker 2: That's what we're looking for, all.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Right, John Spotech coming from Tampa, but of course experience
- 5:17Speaker 1: with John Lay and Denver and many other places along
- 5:20Speaker 1: the way. So happy for your congratulations. First combine is
- 5:22Speaker 1: a GM.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Appreciate it. Appreciate it. Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Can I say have birthday to my mom real quick?
- 5:26Speaker 2: Love you mom. And what's up Jack?
- 5:27Speaker 4: My son watching thinking you're a scout right now?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Love you too, Buddy.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Awesome, all right, thank you, John, Appreciate it. The Season
