- 0:09Welcome to the City Center podcast from West Palm Beach,
- 0:12Florida.
- 0:13I'm Jerry Marcelo.
- 0:16There's no question that people living in West Palm Beach should take hurricanes seriously.
- 0:22The past few seasons have produced a string of hurricanes that were fearsome in power and capable of great destruction.
- 0:292024 is no exception with a record number of name storms expected between now and the end of November.
- 0:37The question before all of us.
- 0:38Now that hurricane season is here,
- 0:40should we ride out the storm in our homes or should we plan to evacuate to a location better suited for the powerful winds and endless rains?
- 0:49Joining me today to talk about it is Assistant fire Chief Brent Bloomfield Brent.
- 0:54Welcome.
- 0:56Thank you.
- 0:56Good to be here.
- 0:57Most people are aware that tropical storms shouldn't be messed with.
- 1:01We've had some doozies in the last few years.
- 1:04Let's go over a little bit of the background.
- 1:06You know,
- 1:06we had Ian a few years ago.
- 1:08How bad was that?
- 1:10Yeah.
- 1:10So we've in the last,
- 1:12you know,
- 1:12seven years since I've been in emergency management,
- 1:15we've had some major storms come through Florida.
- 1:17You know,
- 1:17Michael Ian Edia.
- 1:19You know,
- 1:19we've been hit by multiple storms and that people don't even realize they don't think about,
- 1:23you know,
- 1:23we had Nicole two years ago and because of what happened on the west coast,
- 1:27it was an afterthought.
- 1:28We did have flooding and the city,
- 1:30we had to go get up some trapped people.
- 1:32So we had,
- 1:33you know,
- 1:33we've had some issues in the last few years and thank God,
- 1:36um,
- 1:36probably about seven years ago,
- 1:38we had a Hurricane Matthew,
- 1:39we escaped because of what we call the wobble.
- 1:41You know,
- 1:42it wobbled out.
- 1:42Hurricane Irma was a big one for us.
- 1:44We caught it tree maged and we had tons of trees down in the city,
- 1:47lots of power lines down.
- 1:49Um,
- 1:49you know,
- 1:49we had a lot of disruption in service.
- 1:51So,
- 1:52you know,
- 1:52we have been affected by storms,
- 1:55not on the scale of,
- 1:56of course,
- 1:56the panhandle on the west coast,
- 1:58but this,
- 1:59this season is gonna be a very busy season.
- 2:01They're expecting tons of storms.
- 2:02So as long as we prepare,
- 2:04I think we'll be in good shape.
- 2:05Right.
- 2:06So preparation and being ready for a storm is key to getting through one.
- 2:10Yeah.
- 2:11So being prepared early,
- 2:12you know,
- 2:12we start in the city on around April 1st.
- 2:15We actually I sent out emails and we start to look at our generators do we have?
- 2:19And as our,
- 2:20as our equipment up and running,
- 2:21you know,
- 2:22our shutters working on our on our stations,
- 2:24our sh is working on on the other structures in the city.
- 2:26These are the things that we start to prepare for early.
- 2:29We start to get all of our water and we start to get all of our,
- 2:32our food rations prepared as early as May 1st.
- 2:35So that's today.
- 2:36Um And I would say that most people I know there's gonna be some amnesty days coming up,
- 2:40the tax free days.
- 2:41You know,
- 2:41I would say make sure you prepare early,
- 2:44make sure you get your rations early,
- 2:45make sure that your meds are up early,
- 2:47make sure you got your pet food.
- 2:48All of these things are,
- 2:49are critical when it comes to time when a hurricane hits.
- 2:52It's really important to be not part of that long line.
- 2:55You see on the news of people lining up for gas and lining up at Home Depot,
- 2:59you got to get out there early,
- 3:01get it done now.
- 3:02Yeah,
- 3:02you don't want to wait till 24 hours before a storm comes there because there's a lot of people that are gonna be lining up and then you have a problem where there's no nothing on the shelves anymore.
- 3:11You're kind of,
- 3:11you know,
- 3:11battling for scraps at that point.
- 3:13You may not get the water that you need,
- 3:15you may not get the food.
- 3:16You know,
- 3:16the big one is definitely your prescriptions.
- 3:18Make sure you get those early because that is something that a lot of people forget.
- 3:22And then,
- 3:22you know,
- 3:22they're running out of their prescription meds two or three days after the storm and it's very difficult to go get them again.
- 3:27Same thing with your pets,
- 3:28make sure that they have adequate food and water as well.
- 3:30Today,
- 3:31we're gonna be talking about a really important question that everyone who is planning for a storm needs to ask themselves.
- 3:38Should we stay in place during a storm in our home or should we try to evacuate?
- 3:43Um,
- 3:44let's go over some of the checklist that would help you answer that question.
- 3:49First of all,
- 3:50location of your home,
- 3:51I think is very important.
- 3:52Is that correct?
- 3:52Extremely important.
- 3:53Yeah,
- 3:53if you are in a evacuation zone and you're ordered to evacuate,
- 3:57evacuate the end.
- 3:59Ok.
- 3:59All right.
- 4:00So say I'm going well,
- 4:01gee you know,
- 4:02am I in a,
- 4:03in a flood zone?
- 4:04Am I in a place that needs to evacuate?
- 4:06How,
- 4:07how does someone find that information?
- 4:08So there's various methods we have on,
- 4:11uh W pb.org/hurricane,
- 4:13you can actually go there and they have the flood maps.
- 4:15We have the flood maps there.
- 4:16Palm Beach County.
- 4:17Also,
- 4:17if you go to Palm Beach County de Department of Emergency Management,
- 4:20they have the flood zones there and the evacuation maps there as well.
- 4:23And then of course,
- 4:24fema if you go to FEMA flood zones,
- 4:26you can actually tap your type,
- 4:28your address in and it'll tell you exactly what zone you're in,
- 4:30whether you're in an A which is gonna flood B,
- 4:32which is likely to flood C,
- 4:34which is,
- 4:34could possibly flood or XX means you're likely to not flood.
- 4:38However,
- 4:39there's still a possibility if we don't.
- 4:42In the past,
- 4:42we've had issues where um if they didn't open certain flood gates to let the water out those areas that were even called X would flood.
- 4:50And then once they opened the gates,
- 4:52the flood,
- 4:52you know,
- 4:52the flooding went away.
- 4:53But we have had problems with that in the past now.
- 4:55And that's actually a really interesting point because people automatically go.
- 4:58Oh,
- 4:58well,
- 4:58if I'm not like on the beach or I'm on the water,
- 5:02I'm ok.
- 5:03That's not necessarily true in this part of the world.
- 5:05Well,
- 5:05because South Florida,
- 5:06you know,
- 5:07we have,
- 5:07it's full of waterways,
- 5:09right.
- 5:09We have lakes,
- 5:10we have retention ponds,
- 5:11we have canals everywhere.
- 5:12So we're surrounded by water constantly.
- 5:15It only takes one flood area to not open up one of the gates,
- 5:20not open up one of the,
- 5:21the uh dams to be blocked and all of a sudden you get flooding behind it.
- 5:26Wow.
- 5:26Ok.
- 5:26So it's important to really know if you're thinking about staying at home,
- 5:31if the home is in going to be protected and safe from flooding in this extreme situation.
- 5:37Yeah,
- 5:37that's more of a very extreme situation.
- 5:39I mean,
- 5:40like in my neighborhood,
- 5:40take it.
- 5:41For instance,
- 5:41you know,
- 5:41we have all these flood,
- 5:43uh,
- 5:43these,
- 5:43uh,
- 5:43grates in the roadway that,
- 5:45that are for storm drain.
- 5:46You know,
- 5:47they're for drain,
- 5:48draining the water after a storm and usually they work very well.
- 5:51However,
- 5:52if they get clogged by leaves and branches and debris,
- 5:55you could have a backup and it's as easy as,
- 5:57you know,
- 5:58sometimes just going out there after,
- 5:59of course,
- 6:00we're talking after a storm,
- 6:01not during a storm,
- 6:02do not do this during a storm.
- 6:03But after a storm,
- 6:04sometimes it's as easy as taking a shovel or rake and just clearing that storm drain and a lot of times that water will dissipate.
- 6:09Got you now,
- 6:10ok.
- 6:11Say I live in a home that is relatively protected from flooding or there's a very low history of flooding in the area.
- 6:18Is there anything else I should be looking at at the home as far as protecting it from hurricane winds?
- 6:24Yeah.
- 6:24So for us,
- 6:25so let's start with the flooding aspect.
- 6:27So,
- 6:27like yesterday,
- 6:27we had uh torrential rains.
- 6:29We had almost five inches of rain in,
- 6:30in a,
- 6:31in a very short time if your yard and your house,
- 6:35uh drains properly.
- 6:36Usually even with five inches of rain.
- 6:38Like we got this last couple of days.
- 6:40You're,
- 6:40you're in pretty good,
- 6:41you know,
- 6:41that you can probably drain probably in pretty good shape,
- 6:43the things that get your house ready,
- 6:44you know,
- 6:44make sure.
- 6:45Now that your shutters are up.
- 6:47Make sure now that you can put your shutters up correctly,
- 6:49make sure that you're,
- 6:51you know,
- 6:51if you have,
- 6:52uh,
- 6:52the,
- 6:53uh,
- 6:53uh,
- 6:53the Accordions that they're working properly,
- 6:55make sure that,
- 6:56um,
- 6:57you know,
- 6:57just the basic parts of your house.
- 6:59You know,
- 6:59if you have an older roof,
- 7:01just maybe have it inspected before storm season.
- 7:04Um,
- 7:04you may wanna make sure if you have,
- 7:06uh,
- 7:06a generator hook up that,
- 7:07that's working properly.
- 7:08If you have a generator,
- 7:09this is the time to fuel it start.
- 7:11It,
- 7:11make sure it's working properly.
- 7:13Because what happens is as we get closer to the hurricane season,
- 7:15as we get closer to a storm coming,
- 7:17all of those people that do those things,
- 7:19um,
- 7:20they're busy because what happens is people wait till the last second and then now here comes all the phone calls.
- 7:24Right.
- 7:25Right.
- 7:26Ok.
- 7:26So you,
- 7:27we checked our home,
- 7:28we feel good about it.
- 7:29Uh,
- 7:29we've talked a little bit about making sure that we have the appropriate supplies.
- 7:33Now,
- 7:33do I need to have supplies for weeks and weeks or how long?
- 7:38Yeah.
- 7:38So,
- 7:38you know,
- 7:38the standard was,
- 7:40um,
- 7:40you know,
- 7:41up to a couple of days.
- 7:42However,
- 7:42you know,
- 7:43I really think a week is about right.
- 7:45So,
- 7:45get enough water,
- 7:46get enough,
- 7:47uh,
- 7:47rations for a week.
- 7:48If you do that,
- 7:49usually you're in pretty good shape even during,
- 7:51um,
- 7:52I was deployed to hurricane Michael.
- 7:54And even during hurricane Michael as bad as Mexico Beach and Panama Beach where we were still getting to people within three or four days.
- 8:01Even on the islands,
- 8:02we were actually flying in choppers to the islands to make sure that they were accessible because sometimes uh like on the west coast or up in uh the Panhandle,
- 8:10the bridges go out and you can't really get there by vehicle.
- 8:13Um There usually are very evacuation areas and you should evacuate.
- 8:17However,
- 8:18we did,
- 8:19uh,
- 8:19land choppers on those and we did do searches on those islands even so we were,
- 8:23we were there within three or four days.
- 8:25I hate to say it in Florida,
- 8:26but we became,
- 8:27it's almost old hat anymore.
- 8:29We became very good at hurricanes and about deployments and,
- 8:33and urban search and rescue,
- 8:34post,
- 8:35post storm.
- 8:36Um,
- 8:37you know,
- 8:37I almost wish we weren't as good as we were,
- 8:39but we've had so many storms that we've become very good at.
- 8:41And so I would say a week if you,
- 8:43if you get seven days worth of stuff,
- 8:46you should be in really,
- 8:47really good shape.
- 8:48And it,
- 8:48and the best part about it is after hurricane season's over,
- 8:50have a little party.
- 8:51That's right.
- 8:52Now.
- 8:53Uh,
- 8:53you make a very good point in the fact that unfortunately,
- 8:57we have gotten very,
- 8:58very good at post storm rescue and,
- 9:02and recovery.
- 9:03Um,
- 9:04what about in the middle of a storm?
- 9:06Say I'm in my house and things are really going bad for me.
- 9:09Is there someone I can turn to?
- 9:11Yeah.
- 9:11So in the fire department we do have,
- 9:14uh,
- 9:14in the police department as well.
- 9:15We do have wind speed requirements where we won't go out.
- 9:18And that is,
- 9:19you know,
- 9:19once we get,
- 9:20you know,
- 9:20start getting tropical storm force winds sustained,
- 9:23um,
- 9:23we can't risk going out with our vehicles,
- 9:26you know,
- 9:26um,
- 9:26our trucks,
- 9:27especially,
- 9:28um,
- 9:28the rescue trucks.
- 9:29They're,
- 9:29they're,
- 9:30they have a high profile so they,
- 9:32they could tend to tip over and we've had it happen before,
- 9:35um,
- 9:35in some other areas.
- 9:36So we,
- 9:37we really,
- 9:38you know,
- 9:39we really like to wait until the storm clears and the winds die down a little bit before we actually start sending units out.
- 9:44The one thing is,
- 9:45is if you do call 911 during it,
- 9:47that it gets queued and then what happens is we start responding to those calls after the fact after the fact,
- 9:53but during the event,
- 9:55during the event,
- 9:56and I will tell you,
- 9:57uh,
- 9:57for instance,
- 9:58you know,
- 9:58we get a very strong storm that's,
- 10:01uh,
- 10:01you know,
- 10:01well,
- 10:02over 100 20 130 miles an hour even,
- 10:04you know,
- 10:04100 and 60 170 miles an hour.
- 10:07It's,
- 10:07there's nobody gonna go out on that.
- 10:09That's just not,
- 10:10that's just not feasible.
- 10:11So that's part of the deal when you're gonna shelter in place and you're staying at home,
- 10:16there's going to be a period of time where you are on your own for this.
- 10:19Yeah.
- 10:20And I would say just make sure you have,
- 10:22you know,
- 10:22exit egress,
- 10:24access points in your house.
- 10:25So what I mean by that is,
- 10:27you know,
- 10:27when you shelter your house up,
- 10:28just try to make sure that you leave yourself an egress at some point because you know,
- 10:32you don't want to be something bad happen and then you can't get out.
- 10:36I mean,
- 10:36that's,
- 10:36that's one of the problems.
- 10:37So make sure you have an egress,
- 10:39ingress and egress out.
- 10:40Um,
- 10:41make sure that if,
- 10:43uh,
- 10:43something bad does happen that you,
- 10:45you know,
- 10:45you kind of prepare for it.
- 10:47Do you,
- 10:47do you have tools?
- 10:48Do you have,
- 10:49um,
- 10:50the proper medical equipment?
- 10:51Do you have a first aid kit?
- 10:52Those kind of things?
- 10:53Those are important.
- 10:54That's really a good point.
- 10:55I mean,
- 10:55there's a lot of people who will seal themselves into their homes.
- 10:59Uh,
- 10:59all the doors and all the windows are buttoned up and there's no easy way out.
- 11:03And that's a,
- 11:04that's a good point because,
- 11:05and we've had,
- 11:05and so that,
- 11:06that comes from experience,
- 11:07right?
- 11:08So,
- 11:08in,
- 11:08in 2004 and 2005,
- 11:10we actually had,
- 11:11you know,
- 11:11we had multiple storms,
- 11:13we had tons of storms come through South Florida and during one of those storms,
- 11:16we had somebody's house catch on fire,
- 11:19but they were stuck in the house because it was completely boarded up and they had no way out of the house,
- 11:24even the front door because they couldn't get to the front door because of where the fire was at.
- 11:28So we actually went out in the storm because of it because it was such a life safety issue.
- 11:33And I want to say we were at 90 mile an hour winds at that point,
- 11:36we did get some people hurt,
- 11:37um,
- 11:37even getting out of the truck doors,
- 11:39pulling people out of the trucks and land,
- 11:41you know,
- 11:41uh getting blown over by wind,
- 11:43things like that.
- 11:44Um We were able to get the person out of the house,
- 11:46but we,
- 11:47we really don't want to do that.
- 11:48That's not safe for us.
- 11:49It's not safe for you.
- 11:51So you just wanna make sure that you have those ingress and egress points.
- 11:53A really important point that a lot of people don't think about.
- 11:57Ok.
- 11:57So we've talked about staying in place.
- 12:00Let's talk about the checklist again.
- 12:02When should I evacuate?
- 12:04Obviously,
- 12:04flooding is a very important one.
- 12:07What about the,
- 12:08the folks that are in the house?
- 12:09How about older folks,
- 12:10people who have medical conditions?
- 12:12Um You know,
- 12:14what,
- 12:15what do we do?
- 12:15What,
- 12:15what makes this,
- 12:16when,
- 12:16when,
- 12:17when does it make sense to leave?
- 12:18Yeah.
- 12:18So,
- 12:19you know,
- 12:19we,
- 12:20we'll just,
- 12:21let's start with this.
- 12:22You should start doing that preparation.
- 12:24Now you should start looking for that.
- 12:26Now,
- 12:27we do have shelters in the county that are for special needs patients.
- 12:30We have pet shelters in the county.
- 12:32It's good to go ahead right now and get on the Palm Beach County Department of Emergency Management website and go ahead and fill out the paperwork for that now,
- 12:40for both the pet shelter and special needs shelters if you need them because then you,
- 12:44you're pretty much guaranteed a spot in those.
- 12:46If you do that,
- 12:47if you don't do that,
- 12:48it makes it a little bit more difficult whenever you're trying that,
- 12:50that day to get into those shelters,
- 12:52it's not that they're gonna turn you away or anything,
- 12:54but if they get full to capacity,
- 12:56they're not gonna let people keep coming in,
- 12:59they're gonna point you to other places and it may be in even another county.
- 13:02So you wanna make sure that you are prepared.
- 13:05Now,
- 13:05I would say in those events,
- 13:07especially when it comes to older,
- 13:09older people who have medical needs or people who have special needs if you can stay with a friend or family member during the storm.
- 13:17If you can that arrangement now to where you're gonna,
- 13:20you're gonna go there when the evacuation is called.
- 13:23Um,
- 13:23then that's a better option,
- 13:25you know,
- 13:25for you and for your com for your,
- 13:27you know,
- 13:28you being comfortable.
- 13:29So,
- 13:29friends and family nearby makes sense to make a run.
- 13:32Now,
- 13:33uh,
- 13:33we have seen the classic pictures of I 95 and the turnpike completely clogged,
- 13:39moving on.
- 13:39Uh,
- 13:39does it ever make real sense for people to say I'm just gonna bug out completely and head out of state?
- 13:45You know,
- 13:45that's a personal decision.
- 13:46But I,
- 13:46I would say that,
- 13:47you know,
- 13:48we've seen it,
- 13:49you know,
- 13:50plenty of times and,
- 13:52and I'll use some of the recent storms,
- 13:53you know,
- 13:54Irma was one,
- 13:56you know,
- 13:56Katrina was another one.
- 13:57We've had storms that have,
- 13:59you know,
- 14:00may look like they're gonna make a beeline for us and they're three or four days out and then they,
- 14:04you know,
- 14:04whenever you're looking at that cone,
- 14:06you know,
- 14:06the cone that's a three and five day cone and they're getting better at forecasting.
- 14:10But that,
- 14:11that forecast could be anywhere in that cone and that's where the eye is going.
- 14:15So that cone might be 3 to 400 miles wide and that storm may shift 300 miles south like Katrina and Irma did.
- 14:24And then Katrina,
- 14:25I mean,
- 14:26Katrina went,
- 14:26you know,
- 14:26down through the Keys and then up and went to New Orleans as we know.
- 14:31But Irma went all and did a complete wrap around the state and came across the west coast.
- 14:35So we had a lot of people that left the east coast because here comes Irma and they went to the west coast and then they literally either had to turn around and try to come back or they had to hunker down on the west coast.
- 14:46Um,
- 14:46we had,
- 14:46uh,
- 14:46multiple storms where people have left and went to,
- 14:50uh,
- 14:50Northern Florida or Georgia.
- 14:51And then what happens is the storm just follows them and then they,
- 14:54you know,
- 14:54they get almost as bad as they would have got here.
- 14:57So it's,
- 14:58you know,
- 14:58it's a personal preference if it's something that you feel like you wanna do by all means.
- 15:03But you know,
- 15:04you gotta remember that the gas stations are gonna be packed,
- 15:07the roads are going to be packed and it's going to be very difficult once you get to a certain point.
- 15:12Um,
- 15:12if you can't get out and if you,
- 15:14the longer you wait,
- 15:15the worse it's going to be.
- 15:16And that's again,
- 15:17the point is that if you're going to do something like that,
- 15:19you're going to try to just bug out and head out of the state or head out of the area,
- 15:24you got to do it very,
- 15:25very early.
- 15:27People are going to be looking at you funny as you're driving out of your neighborhood,
- 15:30but you are getting as far as head of the storm as possible.
- 15:34That's really key,
- 15:35right?
- 15:35And I would,
- 15:36I would,
- 15:37I would say like if you knew you were going to be attacked by aliens in a week,
- 15:41a week from now,
- 15:42would you stay or would you leave?
- 15:44And that's your personal preference?
- 15:45So if you're going to do that.
- 15:46You,
- 15:47you might want to leave a week early and not wait till the day of.
- 15:50Right.
- 15:50Right now,
- 15:51let's jump back to talking about shelters because people are going.
- 15:54Oh,
- 15:54ok.
- 15:54Well,
- 15:54I don't want to be driving around 995.
- 15:56I've seen those,
- 15:56seen those films.
- 15:57I've seen those pictures,
- 15:59uh,
- 15:59if you are staying at a shelter,
- 16:01um,
- 16:02you know,
- 16:02you're just going to,
- 16:03what do you bring?
- 16:04Do you,
- 16:05do you show up with nothing?
- 16:06Do you bring you camp out?
- 16:07What do you do?
- 16:08Yeah,
- 16:08so you know,
- 16:08you're going to be provided a cot in a little area.
- 16:11Um each area is,
- 16:12is very small,
- 16:14you're not gonna,
- 16:14it's not a luxury apartment.
- 16:15You're definitely not gonna go stay in a hotel,
- 16:18but it's a good option if you have nowhere else to go.
- 16:21And the part of that is you probably should,
- 16:23you need to bring your prescriptions 100% for sure.
- 16:26You should try to bring some ration food and water.
- 16:28They will probably have some there.
- 16:30However,
- 16:30I wouldn't count on it 100% because there's a lot of people and sometimes we can't get all the rations that we need to those facilities just yet.
- 16:38Sometimes it it's after the storm where they start to come in.
- 16:41Um There are bathrooms there,
- 16:43however,
- 16:44it's a shared bathroom,
- 16:45it might be a couple of 100 people.
- 16:47So you know,
- 16:48bring you might want to bring your own,
- 16:50um,
- 16:50you know,
- 16:50soap and maybe some sandals if you're gonna shower there,
- 16:53um,
- 16:54you know,
- 16:55definitely bring,
- 16:56you know,
- 16:56your own toothbrush and that kind of stuff probably in your own,
- 16:59uh sleeping like,
- 17:00like so a sheet,
- 17:02you know,
- 17:02a pillow,
- 17:03that kind of thing.
- 17:03But don't expect that you're going to get any kind of luxury,
- 17:07you know,
- 17:07treatment there.
- 17:08It's pretty much if you really don't have anywhere to go.
- 17:11Shelter is the last resort.
- 17:12Right.
- 17:12So,
- 17:12if you do take advantage of a shelter,
- 17:14first of all,
- 17:15you're going to have to,
- 17:16you know,
- 17:16where you're going early if you have special needs or you have to get in contact with a shelter that can handle pets of a certain type.
- 17:24All that type has to be that,
- 17:25that has to be done well ahead of time and reservations have to be made ahead of time once you're there,
- 17:30you sort of have to get into the mindset by what you describe.
- 17:32You're almost like camping indoors.
- 17:34Yeah,
- 17:34I mean,
- 17:35really,
- 17:35you,
- 17:35you get,
- 17:36um,
- 17:36basically like,
- 17:37um,
- 17:38you know,
- 17:39uh,
- 17:39uh,
- 17:39a very small area enough to fit a cot and maybe a foot or two on each side and there's cots,
- 17:45you know,
- 17:45there's hundreds of cots and you're staying with hundreds of people usually in like a gymnasium or a big open area.
- 17:52There is,
- 17:52there's not a lot of privacy,
- 17:54um,
- 17:55you know,
- 17:55but just be prepared for that.
- 17:56Because we do have people show up and they get upset because they're having to stay in a,
- 18:01a huge room with other people.
- 18:03And,
- 18:03you know,
- 18:03they're,
- 18:04you get a lot of good sleep or they're having to share the bathrooms and you know,
- 18:08you just got to be prepared for that before you go.
- 18:10So the whole point of this conversation is,
- 18:13is that there are many options and decisions to be made,
- 18:17but it's important to make them early well ahead of the storm.
- 18:21Yeah,
- 18:21I would say today may 1st should be your your eyes open getting ready for hurricane season.
- 18:28Um You know,
- 18:28we we in the city and me at my house this weekend,
- 18:33I will be firing up my generator.
- 18:36I will be making sure that the water is ordered.
- 18:38I will be making sure that we have enough peanut butter and jelly and stuff and it's not for me because I'll be at work,
- 18:45but it's for my family so that I know that they're taken care of.
- 18:48So when I do go to work,
- 18:49I know that I can feel comfortable leaving them there.
- 18:52So let's go over again.
- 18:53Now,
- 18:53where can people find that information about flood zones and just hurricane preparedness?
- 18:58Yeah.
- 18:58So we have,
- 18:59of course,
- 18:59uh W pb.org,
- 19:01which is the city's website,
- 19:02front slash hurricane.
- 19:04You can find the all this information there.
- 19:07Um If you go to Palm Beach County Department of Emergency Management,
- 19:10they have the information there and then FEMA has a lot of really good resources.
- 19:14If you look up fa hurricane or F MA flood zones,
- 19:17you'll get all these,
- 19:18the information that we're speaking of as we're heading into hurricane season.
- 19:222024.
- 19:23What are the main points you would like to share with folks listening to this podcast today?
- 19:28Well,
- 19:28I think the biggest thing is being prepared.
- 19:30You know,
- 19:31we,
- 19:31and,
- 19:31you know,
- 19:32we have uh some standards and when we look for like fema,
- 19:36we look at our preparedness here in the city.
- 19:39You know,
- 19:39you wanna make sure that you're prepared,
- 19:40you want to say that you make sure that you're protected,
- 19:43you wanna make sure that whenever um you have any issues,
- 19:46you mitigate them early and that you wanna make sure that when,
- 19:48after,
- 19:49um,
- 19:49it's all said and done that you're able to recover easily.
- 19:52And if you have all the proper preparation in place early,
- 19:56you have your hurricane kit,
- 19:58you have your evacuation that you know,
- 20:01that you're going to be getting out of the house.
- 20:02The other thing is I would say if you have a house where you have multiple people living in the house and if you have kids,
- 20:08you know,
- 20:08you may want to have a meet point where whenever you,
- 20:12if you do have to evacuate the house,
- 20:14you have somewhere you can go meet um whether it's,
- 20:18hey,
- 20:18we're going to meet at the fire hydrant.
- 20:19That's two houses over or whether we're gonna meet,
- 20:22hey,
- 20:23we're gonna go and jump in the car because that's maybe the only safe place we got left or whatever it is.
- 20:28Make sure you have your preparation done now.
- 20:31Gotcha,
- 20:32Brent.
- 20:32Thank you very much for your,
- 20:34for your uh information today.
- 20:36You helped us get ready,
- 20:37get ready for a hurricane season.
- 20:39Let's cross our fingers that we get another break this year,
- 20:42but we should be prepared for an active season.
- 20:45Yes,
- 20:45it's gonna be a very,
- 20:46it's gonna be a very active season.
- 20:48Colorado State University who puts out,
- 20:51you know,
- 20:51they are kind of the kings when it comes to uh you know,
- 20:54when it comes to these uh productions,
- 20:56especially for hurricane season and it's the most uh hurricanes that they've ever predicted.
- 21:04So it's gonna be a very busy season,
- 21:06I believe.
- 21:07Let's hope for the best.
- 21:08Prepare for the worst.
- 21:09Yeah.
- 21:09There you go.
