- 0:44OK on the video. So in this video guys, I'm
- 0:46literally talking about my personal life and how I have
- 0:50issues with certain things and my daily life tasks.
- 0:52How? Asperger's syndrome.
- 0:53Kind of like impact my life in certain ways and ways in which I
- 0:57deal with those to the best of my ability.
- 0:58So maybe you could take something away that can help you
- 1:00in this video. Alright, so let's do it.
- 1:02Let's grab your Aspie World piece of merchandise.
- 1:05And if you don't actually have a piece of Aspie World
- 1:06merchandise, I'm right now wearing my hat.
- 1:08But if you don't, you can always buy one in the link in the
- 1:10description below. And underneath this video is
- 1:12like a carousel. But anyway, grab your phone,
- 1:15hold it up to the screen, take a selfie with me.
- 1:17So you do this, and then I go like this and then we'll take a
- 1:20selfie. I'm going to count you in.
- 1:21OK, so stand next to the screen, hold your phone up and take a
- 1:24selfie with 321. Okay.
- 1:27Cool. Now you need to go to Instagram
- 1:28and Twitter and Facebook, publish that photo and tag me
- 1:32because I want to retweet it, share it and then put on my
- 1:35Instagram story. So that's super awesome.
- 1:37You guys are amazing. Okay.
- 1:38Come with the video. So I have a diagnosis of
- 1:41Asperger syndrome and ADHD combined, and I also have
- 1:44dyslexia, OCD. I actually, I wanted to do a
- 1:48video talking about the things that impact my life just from an
- 1:50Asperger's point of view, from just having an autism spectrum
- 1:52disorder. Now obviously we know that
- 1:54Asperger's isn't diagnosed. Asperger's.
- 1:56Now it's just diagnosed as autism spectrum disorder.
- 1:58Let me know in the comment down below if you have a diagnosis of
- 2:01Asperger's syndrome or a diagnosis of autism spectrum
- 2:03disorder, because there's no difference.
- 2:05But I just like to know which terminology was used to diagnose
- 2:07you because I read and respond to every single comment.
- 2:10So if you do that, that'd be super awesome.
- 2:12So daily life, right? One of the things I wanted to
- 2:15talk about was going shopping, right?
- 2:18Not just going shopping. I'm not talking about like, you
- 2:20know, going to outlet stores for clothes or like gadgets and
- 2:22stuff. I'm talking about like, grocery
- 2:23food shopping. OK, this is a necessity.
- 2:26And I have the biggest issues with this for a number of
- 2:30reasons. Let's get into it.
- 2:31So the first reason I have an issue with groceries is because
- 2:35going to the store is kind of like, it's kind of a big deal.
- 2:38You know, you're going to go somewhere.
- 2:39There's going to be lots of people.
- 2:40And that kind of social anxiety starts hitting in and like, you
- 2:44start worrying and panicking, thinking, Oh my goodness,
- 2:45there's going to be lots of people there.
- 2:47I don't know their intentions. I don't know if they're good
- 2:48people, bad people, don't know what they're going to do.
- 2:50Right. And that fear of not knowing
- 2:52that social commutative part, because obviously autism is a
- 2:55social commutative issue, It kind of drives my anxiety
- 2:59through the roof. So I get social anxiety.
- 3:01And as a response to that, I'm just kind of like, Oh my
- 3:03goodness, you know, I kind of don't dread going to the store,
- 3:07but I just don't look forward to it as much as I would do if it
- 3:09was. There was more kind of things in
- 3:11place to make it more autism friendly.
- 3:12Right. Because as soon as you get in
- 3:14that door, there's like a billion people buzzing around
- 3:17and being really, really fast. And then also there's like loud
- 3:20music blaring. So as soon as you enter the
- 3:23story of like, loud music, like the security guys watching over
- 3:27you, because I know they're doing their job, but it also
- 3:28makes you feel kind of like you're some kind of like
- 3:31criminal. I'm like, oh, my goodness.
- 3:33And then so you got the security, the pressure from
- 3:36going in there. There's the music playing.
- 3:37So you're trying to focus on everything.
- 3:39Now this is super interesting because of the ADHD combined
- 3:42with the Asperger syndrome Try. I love to focus on stuff unless
- 3:45I'm hyper focusing, which means that I'm focusing on something
- 3:48that I really, really enjoy. My mind kind of starts wondering
- 3:52because it's hard to keep on task because of the ADHD.
- 3:55So I can only really like take in a certain amount of sensory
- 3:59input before it's just game over.
- 4:00Like overload, just get out. So you're walking in the store,
- 4:03you know, you're instantly greeted with crazy loud music.
- 4:07You know, like like Oh my goodness, you know, and you're
- 4:09walking down and that's like going on, right?
- 4:11And then you're getting a little bit down the store and then all
- 4:13of a sudden and all of the bread aisle starts like, you know,
- 4:16about the waft of bread and stuff is like, so your senses
- 4:18are getting overloaded there. And then the deli counter smell
- 4:20kind of comes in. And then there's like the
- 4:23abundance of people just walking around this store, kind of like
- 4:26bumping into you and there's kids there.
- 4:27And it's like parents and shouting at the kids.
- 4:29And there's lots of things going on and you're trying to do your
- 4:32shop by getting the things that you want to do on your list.
- 4:34But there's other people coming in and they're like, oh, excuse
- 4:36me, it's just chaos. It's just chaos.
- 4:39It's like it's something that, like, it needs to be quietened
- 4:42down like. So in the UK, they've got a
- 4:44thing called Autism Hour, which is basically where they have an
- 4:47hour on a certain day, selected day.
- 4:50So people with an autism spectrum diagnosis can go and
- 4:53shop leisurely so that they kind of like.
- 4:56Turn the music. Down they turn.
- 4:57The lights down because lights in there are bright as well.
- 4:58I've got to mention that with the lights.
- 5:00Are just like, whoa, super bright.
- 5:02And then they kind of tell people like it's autism hour.
- 5:04So like if you are going to be there, be respectful and be
- 5:06quiet and like that's kind of like hustle and bustle of the
- 5:08usual kind of shoppers. Now that's all well and good,
- 5:12but that happens one hour of one day, once out of the year that I
- 5:18know of. Which is crazy, right?
- 5:19I know some stores and some outlets have kind of like
- 5:22expanded that and I've got like Autism Hour in place.
- 5:24That just happens, you know, all the time, which is fine.
- 5:27But in terms of this autism hour, Oh my goodness, just
- 5:31having one hour isn't good enough.
- 5:33So my hack for going to the store is very, very simple.
- 5:37I take headphones with me. Now these are the Apple's noise
- 5:41cancelling headphones. And I put these in because that
- 5:43just absolutely takes the the noise away from any kind of
- 5:48like, you know, the the noise and of the people, the noise,
- 5:50the music, all that kind of stuff, you know, the hustle and
- 5:52bustle noise kind of takes that away.
- 5:54So at least it grounds you to 0 so that you can deal with the
- 5:56smell and then you can get over the smell and then you can deal
- 5:58with the people in the line trying to get their stuff.
- 6:02So that's one way I do that. Another one is to check the
- 6:06time. So if you go on Google, if you
- 6:08open your phone, go on Google, you're actually able to find
- 6:11like the the best opening times and like you know, busiest times
- 6:16for for the thing that you're you're talking about.
- 6:19If you go on your phone and type in something like, I don't know
- 6:21McDonald's or or whatever, it actually shows you a chart of
- 6:25like how and when the busiest time is.
- 6:27It's kind of like a graph that goes over the top and it tells
- 6:29you when the busiest time is and when the less busiest time is.
- 6:31So the hack is to go there on the less busy times, which is
- 6:35pretty simple right? So less busy times and use noise
- 6:37cancelling headphones. I actually have a second set of
- 6:40noise cancelling headphones, which are the Bose noise
- 6:41cancelling headphones everyone raves about which are actually
- 6:43here in my draw actually use these Morphus Studio Production
- 6:46now because I actually have the the the Apple ones, but these
- 6:50are the Bose headphones. Super cool right?
- 6:53And these are really, really good.
- 6:54I have a link for the Bose headphones in the description
- 6:57below. If you want to get your hands on
- 6:58these, I highly recommend these. They're a little bit more
- 7:01expensive than the Apple ones, but they are a lot better than
- 7:04the Apple ones for actually blocking out all noise I've used
- 7:06on an airplane and it was just crazy good.
- 7:08So other than that, pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants, Oh my
- 7:13goodness, where do I begin? There is an issue that presents
- 7:17itself. So people in the autism spectrum
- 7:19take things very literally and very seriously because they take
- 7:22everything at face value in literal format.
- 7:25So when we go to like, restaurants and stuff, I'm
- 7:27always taking things literally. So if we, like, I'm going to the
- 7:30restrooms or I'm going to the salad bar or something, we bump
- 7:33into somebody and then they try to do a joke to be sarcastic.
- 7:35I don't know if they're joking or being serious.
- 7:37This really bugs me. Like how am I ever supposed to
- 7:41know if this person is being serious or not?
- 7:44Like, you know, people just joke about all the time.
- 7:46And actually, one time I was in a supermarket and this guy was
- 7:49trying to be funny with me when I was going on the till.
- 7:52And then I was like, hey, what are you doing, man?
- 7:54Why are you being, like, a jerk for what's what's going on?
- 7:56And he's like, oh, no, I'm trying to be funny.
- 7:57And I was like, what the heck? That's not funny because I
- 7:59didn't understand the joke. And because of that, it didn't.
- 8:02It's not like it landed me in trouble, but it kind of
- 8:04presented a difficult situation. So then I have this, like, fear
- 8:07of social interaction because of the fact that I know that people
- 8:10are going to do jokes that I'm never going to get.
- 8:12And because of that, then I'm now in the, you know, I'm in a
- 8:16difficult situation. And so when you go to bars and
- 8:18restaurants, have a meal or whatever, if you're seeing your
- 8:22family and friends, then you are going to be confronted with not
- 8:25only a bunch of social situations that are going to be
- 8:28so difficult because you're not going to understand the body
- 8:30language, the the commutative types of these people, the the
- 8:34unwritten kind of social rules, how far to stand away from so
- 8:37on. How?
- 8:37When's your turn to talk? How long do you talk for?
- 8:39Do you talk about your own topic for for a long amount of time?
- 8:42And when's somebody else's turn to talk?
- 8:44You know, all these things Kind of collaborate to make the the
- 8:49whole experience not a nice experience.
- 8:51And because of that, I kind of think that going to restaurants
- 8:55and pubs and stuff is stressful alone, just for those reasons.
- 8:58Let alone the fact that Oh yeah, you're in a busy place.
- 9:01There's like bottles clunking everywhere.
- 9:03There's like people moving in and out.
- 9:04There's loud and rowdy people as people wanted to dance and sing
- 9:07and all this kind of stuff. So I simply hack this in a very
- 9:10simple way. I have a simple rule.
- 9:12It's basically this, unless I have to, I just don't go.
- 9:17People always feel like they are obliged to do things because
- 9:20they feel like, well, if I don't go up and think bad of me
- 9:23because it's this person's birthday, or if this person's,
- 9:26you know, done this and whatever and whatever.
- 9:27But if you should always take care of yourself because there's
- 9:30no point in going somewhere and putting yourself out your
- 9:32comfort zone, then you become upset and have issues so that
- 9:36then just to police somebody else because then they're going
- 9:38to be worried about you, you know, they're going to be like,
- 9:40what about you? What's going on with you?
- 9:42So take care #1. If it doesn't feel right, if
- 9:45you're not happy with it, just don't go.
- 9:46That's what I do. And yes, maybe some people will
- 9:48get offended by it, you know, but eventually they'll realize
- 9:50that you're just taking care of your mental health and your
- 9:53neurological health. And then they'll say, OK, well,
- 9:55I get that. And then, you know, if they're
- 9:56true friends and the true family members, you know, that are
- 9:59honest and they're going to really appreciate it and they're
- 10:01going to be appreciative of the fact that you're not going to
- 10:03put yourself out there to make more of a problem for yourself.
- 10:06So that is basically the way that I deal with that guys.
- 10:10If you think this video could help somebody and it's
- 10:12information can help someone else, please share this on
- 10:15Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and anywhere really on
- 10:18the social media platform that you think somebody would get
- 10:20something from this video. And that was super help me out.

- 10:25If you're new around here, check out my next video and I'll see
- 10:27you next time guys.
