- 1:38patrons. OK, so we're going to get into
- 1:41right into Part 2 right now. Next up, we have a drama on the
- 1:46chopping block. Isabel said Goblin is overhyped.
- 1:51The age gap between Kung Yu and King Goon was hard for me to
- 1:54look past PXZ, says Goblin. It's overrated.
- 1:59The second lead couple, it was only the good thing.
- 2:03What do you mean? A 300 years or so man felt in
- 2:06love with an underage girl at first sight.
- 2:10Da da da. I'm not listen.
- 2:13I will never defend Goblin in public.
- 2:17That show was 1. I see you looking around, you're
- 2:23like finding the words. I'm finding the words because
- 2:26goblin. How do I explain it?
- 2:30I agree that the age gap was problematic but I not but and I
- 2:37don't see people doing that with 2521 the same way they do it
- 2:42with goblin. I get it 300 years old.
- 2:46All all these things my saying. I heard people bitching about
- 2:502521 as well, but oh really? Oh yeah, that's 'cause I did
- 2:55another so costly stirring shit on TikTok.
- 2:59I did another trend with, you know, the Kendrick song that was
- 3:04the Drake diss track that says. Yes.
- 3:07It's probably a minor like that of the song.
- 3:10People were putting perceived pedophiles and real pedophiles
- 3:15in pop culture up next to this song.
- 3:19Like putting the song over top of the photo of the person or
- 3:22whatever. And I did that for both.
- 3:25Goblin and Namji hooks character in 2521 and Oh my God, I'll tell
- 3:32you which one went further. The 2521 video, that one got
- 3:38people so riled up. And again, it's four years to
- 3:42me, I'm like it's four year like it's not.
- 3:46I don't think you guys understand like life I guess if
- 3:49if. And hidden love.
- 3:51Oh yeah, and Hidden Love, having a crush on somebody older than
- 3:53you. Like, you just don't get it
- 3:54then. So 2521, I did it as a joke,
- 3:58right? Because I knew that there was
- 3:59rumblings of this anyway. And again, it just proved to be
- 4:04not so funny to some people because they just were like,
- 4:08yeah, he's so icky. And it was not that serious.
- 4:13It was never that serious. Same for Goblin.
- 4:16It's not that serious. It was never that serious.
- 4:19I honestly feel like the people that just look at the numbers on
- 4:23relationships in Yeah a drama, they just kind of miss the whole
- 4:30thing. Like they miss the story, the
- 4:32context of the love story or the connection between these two
- 4:38characters, bar none. They just don't care to look at
- 4:44it that way. I have racked my brain.
- 4:47I have like done soul searching over the goblin in the 2521
- 4:52because they're the most prominent age gaps that people
- 4:56bitch about constantly. And I'm I've done so much social
- 4:59sharing. I'm like, maybe I'm wrong, maybe
- 5:01this and that and the other and I've rewatched and like no, it's
- 5:05not grooming. No, it's not grooming.
- 5:08Sorry to tell you this is not the correct definition of
- 5:11grooming that you have if you think this is grooming.
- 5:14This is why I'm just like, I'm not going to go back and forth
- 5:17with you on this because it's it's not it.
- 5:22And I just feel like people, let me let me just throw this out
- 5:29there. We are watching historical
- 5:32dramas. How old do you think that girl
- 5:35is when she's marrying the king? You like when when we're being
- 5:41very realistic about they're just like 50141560.
- 5:47Like what? What are we crying about?
- 5:50I don't know why people are throwing up, crying, sliding
- 5:53down the walls over Goblin and 2521 with those 28.
- 5:58I'm like first of all, and and first, second and third is
- 6:02Kingoon is 12 years younger than Kong Yu, but she was a fully
- 6:09consenting adult when she agreed to do this drama, which made her
- 6:13famous. Yes, which made her iconic.
- 6:18Today, she's still the Goblins ride to this day.
- 6:21Konyu again, just an unassailable icon who again
- 6:27minds his own business, barely comes out for any roles.
- 6:31The fact that he did Goblin was a huge fucking deal.
- 6:35Part of what made the lore so amazing on the release of this
- 6:39drama. To see people just reduce.
- 6:42It's so reductive to me to attack the age gap.
- 6:47Yeah, on the drama, I've I feel like I've already settled my
- 6:53piece on the actual Goblin deep Dive review that's on the
- 6:56podcast feed. But I mean, this is also par for
- 7:00the course for any YA lit Yeah that has some sort of a mortal
- 7:05being. Where was that energy with
- 7:07Twilight? Where?
- 7:09Like there was none of this energy when Twilight came out.
- 7:12Come on. I I just, yeah, I do feel like
- 7:17people were stuck and couldn't get past this age thing.
- 7:23And and that's only in recent. Years to me, right?
- 7:27Which is so weird. The PC police on this age gap
- 7:31stuff, I've never seen it before and there's some that are
- 7:35legitimately disgusting in film and television that people
- 7:41either have never watched because it's too old.
- 7:44They just don't know about it to rail about it.
- 7:46But I mean, this is not that bad.
- 7:50My my thing was because she was not a minor when she did the
- 7:55show, like you mentioned. I don't care.
- 7:59I don't care. It's the it's the story.
- 8:02We do have really old, you know, characters.
- 8:07It's the story. Can we just move on?
- 8:10There's just it's, there's so much nuance there that I'm like,
- 8:13you missed it. Yeah.
- 8:14And the urgency of like trying to save her and all this, it's
- 8:18like. And that is the only person who
- 8:20can free him off of his curse so.
- 8:24The paradox of him saving the mom and then the child that's
- 8:28born is his bride and all this stuff.
- 8:30The only person who can save him from this eternal life of
- 8:34loneliness. And I know, I mean honestly,
- 8:36like the whole thing gone over people's heads when they just
- 8:40look at the age gap. But that's OK, more for me.
- 8:43And literally how I feel. I'm like OK fine just stop
- 8:46bitching I hear you, I hear you enough.
- 8:51Daisy says save me with Takon in It is one of the best cinematic
- 8:56K drama thrillers I've ever seen.
- 8:59And as disturbing as it was, it was Oscar worthy.
- 9:03Takon is also an amazing actor. OK.
- 9:08I don't know about Tekian being an amazing actor.
- 9:11He's certainly fine, he's passable, but Save Me is crazy
- 9:16good. I don't know about Oscar worthy,
- 9:18but it is very good. It is a very good show.
- 9:22Yeah, I, I used to attend an abusive church that you could
- 9:26call a cult. And so this was very triggering
- 9:29to me to watch Save Me because it's about saving Soyaji's
- 9:35character from being in a cult, a religious cult.
- 9:39And let me tell you, they got a lot of stuff right.
- 9:44They got a lot of stuff right. It was very disturbing and off
- 9:49putting and all the things. So I could only watch it the one
- 9:52time, but very, very good show. Highly recommend OCN Drama.
- 9:57So that should be enough to tell you what's the vibe.
- 10:02Man I miss OCN. Dude, I thought OCN was going
- 10:06back. I thought it was getting
- 10:08resurrected. Is it?
- 10:10I thought. Because the socials were like
- 10:12active again and I was like wait is OCN back?
- 10:15They made some good TV. They made some bangers OK.
- 10:20Reyna says Songkang is overrated.
- 10:24There I said it. I responded directly to this
- 10:28person and said his eyes are like a void doll.
- 10:31Eyes. Nothing there.
- 10:33That's how I feel about. OK OK, so many people talking
- 10:40about Song Kang. Someone else said right when I
- 10:42said my demon is so boring it's because of his acting.
- 10:46Now on the flip side, someone said Song Kang is one of the
- 10:49best and most versatile actors but no one really cares about
- 10:52him anymore because of his enlistment.
- 10:55And I choked on my coffee. Choked on my coffee, Carol, I
- 11:02see you cover your face and just like looking back, stunned.
- 11:07What do you have to say about this person who thinks that Song
- 11:10Kong is one of the best and most versatile actors, and he's only
- 11:15gone from public consciousness because of his enlistment?
- 11:19I think we're watering down language too much.
- 11:23Versatile. I just come on people, let's
- 11:28let's get it. What are you talking about?
- 11:31Songkong versatile in the same sentence?
- 11:34You're out of your mind. That's.
- 11:36What you're talking about when you're talking?
- 11:39No, I agree with you. I do not watch Songkong dramas.
- 11:43It it just anytime I watch it I drop it.
- 11:48But more importantly, you're talking about enlistment.
- 11:51Ido Yang just went and came back and we never missed him, so
- 11:56that's not what it means. His enlistment has nothing to do
- 12:01with it. The guy can't act.
- 12:02He can't. Act no, no, his best work is
- 12:07Navilera and that has nothing at all to do with him.
- 12:10That's just story that's he's paired with a veteran actor and
- 12:14like I said with BAE Susie, he's kind of got a 1 trick pony thing
- 12:19too. Yes, and I'd like to see both of
- 12:23them in a drama. Oh God, God forbid.
- 12:27So someone followed it up on that one is home.
- 12:32They glazed on kind of like crazy with that comment that I
- 12:35read. But the follow up someone named
- 12:37Gigi said wait, OK, see my foul take is that he's not versatile.
- 12:41He plays the same character in every show.
- 12:45Then some other people and I don't know if it was that
- 12:48original commenter but other people started hyping up song
- 12:51kind and saying like oh really? The same character in Sweet
- 12:54Home, same character in Novelera, some character in this
- 12:56and that in the other and Gigi was like OK exactly how are they
- 13:00different? Genuinely he's monotonous, dark,
- 13:04bland and very standoffish in every drama.
- 13:06Those you listed, same character in everyone and I'm like Gigi,
- 13:10yes. Gigi.
- 13:17Has it? Yes yeah.
- 13:20Jin says Songkang and Chao Nu have no charms in acting so Chao
- 13:25Nu has entered the chat. OK Chao Nu, I have also gotten
- 13:29in trouble over my thoughts on Chao Nu.
- 13:31I always get in trouble on TikTok.
- 13:33So I got in trouble because if I said he can't act like straight
- 13:37up and I know you feel the same way and what else do we have to
- 13:41say about? Tono, there's nothing else to
- 13:45say. I think that whoever is backing
- 13:49him and that, you know, the industry wanting a pretty face
- 13:54and whatnot, you know, they're doing their thing.
- 13:57I really, I want to be empathetic and say I think Chong
- 14:04Wu, I was watching him in some Butler show or a masters show
- 14:11with with the guy who broke up with his family recently,
- 14:16Isungi, he was in a variety show.
- 14:18With him not Isungi broke up with his family.
- 14:24You mean cut ties with his in laws?
- 14:27Because the in laws are literal swindlers.
- 14:30Oh my God. Famous swindlers.
- 14:34Don't even. He must be getting so much Flack
- 14:37for marrying into that family. I mean.
- 14:39Yo his career. Yeah, his career had to have
- 14:43tanked at least a little bit for him to say, come out publicly
- 14:48and say, Oh yeah, I've cut ties with my in laws.
- 14:51Not like just a little bit. He was gone.
- 14:54No one was giving him an opportunity anymore.
- 14:57And it like, I don't want to. I love him so much.
- 15:00I've loved him since he debuted so I've been following his
- 15:05whatever we can talk about him another time.
- 15:07But he child rule was on there and he was crying and this is my
- 15:15empathetic side coming out because he's just like I haven't
- 15:19experienced life. I haven't really done anything
- 15:25except to be a trainee and be AK pop star.
- 15:29And in that moment and I was like, yeah, that is one of the
- 15:32reasons that I have issues with your acting because you you
- 15:38don't. Yeah, not what a, you know, not
- 15:42a punk, but like I just. Mean like you're you're you're a
- 15:47jit man. Like you have no life
- 15:48experience. You've never rubbed elbows with
- 15:52the common person so. No.
- 15:56And you don't have any life experience to fall back on,
- 16:03which is, you know, you could say that for a lot of K pop
- 16:06idols, they're sort of arrested in this moment of whatever stage
- 16:12they entered into K pop OK. And they and they don't really
- 16:16get an opportunity to grow as a human and and, you know, be
- 16:22empathetic and and, you know, there's a lot going on there.
- 16:25There's a lot going on there, But then you still can't act
- 16:29acting you. Know, I mean you can.
- 16:32The thing is, acting is make believe, right?
- 16:35So even if you've never experienced whatever it is
- 16:38you're portraying, you can still pull from something.
- 16:42You can still hack it to. But what I'm saying act like.
- 16:47But what I'm saying he has nothing.
- 16:49And there's nothing. And that's the issue that I have
- 16:53with Chao Anu. And that's the issue that a lot
- 16:55of people have with Chao Anu is that he's so beautiful.
- 16:57Like he's so nice. Like I have no issues with him.
- 17:01I wish him nothing but the best. But also don't put him in
- 17:07something that has a plot because I don't believe him.
- 17:11He sucks and a lot of people were agreeing and commenting
- 17:16under this June comment. Someone else said yeah they just
- 17:20served face card. Someone defending Songkong.
- 17:25Give Songkong some grace. He is trying.
- 17:27Being new in the industry and all the chaos in the industry.
- 17:31Chao Nu has no acting skills whatsoever.
- 17:33And so a glazing Songkong and completely agreeing about Chao
- 17:39Nu. Someone says responding to that
- 17:42person. Not when it's the other way
- 17:44around. It's Song Kang who has zero
- 17:46acting skills and Chow Anu can act I wrong and wrong and wrong.
- 17:55I'm like sweating because it's just.
- 17:58But you know what it is too? What is?
- 18:00I feel like you start seeing people's age.
- 18:04Sorry when? Yes.
- 18:07It's just there's a certain I'm just not fucking with them.
- 18:12I'm just like, I'm too old for this, yeah.
- 18:18So many comments about my demon sucks.
- 18:21I don't know why everybody likes it.
- 18:22I don't not like Song Kong. Any drama he's in I don't want
- 18:25to watch. Chow Anu cannot act please in
- 18:28all caps. Any K drama with Chao Nu or Sung
- 18:31Kong all feel bland. Their acting is bland.
- 18:33True Beauty was a hard watch for me.
- 18:35Hung in the Oops saved it. Any romantic K drama with Sung
- 18:38Kong all feel bland, no emotion. Oh God it's just so Chao Nu and
- 18:44Rookie Historian was literally so good.
- 18:46I haven't seen his modern K dramas, but the part where he's
- 18:48on his knees crying to his father had my boyfriend tearing
- 18:52up, too. Yeah, that's his best role is to
- 18:56me, it's a rookie historian, Gujar Young.
- 18:58And again, if if he had any tricks up his sleeve, those were
- 19:03all of them in that show and paired with a better, you know,
- 19:09female lead constructed show. Maybe, I don't know.
- 19:12But that's the best thing he's put out.
- 19:14The poor guy is only 28 years old and he keeps trying.
- 19:18He he keeps trying Island Wonderful World and a slew of
- 19:25variety show appearances that get people to feel like you do
- 19:30Carol to feel sympathetic toward him and whatever plate he thinks
- 19:34he has. The solution is so simple to me.
- 19:38Stop acting and just be a model. For real be be.
- 19:43That is going to pay your bills. You know what he needs to be
- 19:47Isuhiyok. Isuhiyok back around again.
- 19:55Be the face where Isuhiya kiss the voice like that, that kind
- 20:00of stream where you come a few times.
- 20:03But then I feel like they're shoving him down my throat and I
- 20:08just, I'm not buying it. Oh, Bina from Bina Heart Hearts
- 20:14loves childhood. I know.
- 20:20She's probably going to be like, what are you guys talking about?
- 20:23Dude, I know her ears must be ringing right now.
- 20:25Yeah, Bina was on the True Beauty episode review if you
- 20:30want to hear a semi deep dive on that.
- 20:32Bina was so gracious to join me for that one.
- 20:35And yeah, I had to tread very carefully because I knew that
- 20:37she had a soft spot for Chao Nu. I did not go full send on Chao
- 20:42Nu on that episode like I probably could have, but he's
- 20:46here now getting completely flamed in the comments section
- 20:49and by us yours truly. Dos says all those oppas who are
- 20:54famous despite their mediocre acting.
- 20:56Those high salaries should be going to Kim Teri, Kim Goen, and
- 21:00Shin Heson again. They're versatile, truly know
- 21:05how to act in all caps. Pay disparity 100% yes, the
- 21:14women. The women need more money and
- 21:18they deserve more money now. Shin Hai San in the same
- 21:22sentence as Kim Terry and Kim go.
- 21:25I don't know, I don't know about.
- 21:27That touch grass. Wendy Pakshinei being considered
- 21:31the most beautiful Korean actress is extremely overrated
- 21:33in my opinion. Koi Fish.
- 21:35The hate towards Pakshinei is so forced.
- 21:38There's a lot of other actresses who cries in every drama and
- 21:40cannot kiss to save their lives. Kalisha Bronner still haven't
- 21:45seen airs because I can't stand Pakshinei someone said.
- 21:50I think she doesn't really suit the romance genre and her
- 21:53thriller slash horror roles are very good, for example The Call,
- 21:56Alive etcetera. Completely agree.
- 21:58Completely agree with that sub comment.
- 22:01I don't think she excels at romance.
- 22:03And another person says that she can't kiss because she's famous
- 22:08for her fish kisses from back in the day.
- 22:11The ones were like her eye, her eyes are wide open and it's
- 22:16she's got a closed mouth kiss type of deal.
- 22:19She's surprised that this even happened to her.
- 22:23That's that's a fish kiss. A lot of K dramas have fish
- 22:27kisses, especially the older ones.
- 22:28But Pakshine is very famous for hers.
- 22:30And yeah, I will say that not knowing how to kiss and not
- 22:38being allowed to kiss a certain way, directed to kiss a certain
- 22:44way. These are all very different
- 22:46things. I want to give her a little
- 22:49grace on the fish kisses because she, I, I consider her a victim,
- 22:53right? It takes a lot to produce AK
- 22:57drama. It's not just the actors
- 23:00deciding unilaterally how to portray a kissing or how to do
- 23:05it. What angles they're going to be
- 23:06shot at and all the rest. That is decided by the director
- 23:10of the DP, director of photography, slash
- 23:13cinematographer. All of these people are
- 23:16directing them how to do it, what does the script say, what
- 23:21have you. And to me she's a victim of the
- 23:25times because that was the prevalent thing in K dramas was
- 23:29to have these fish kisses. And I feel like she knows that
- 23:35we in the zeitgeist, she's a bad kisser.
- 23:41I Yeah, I I'm just thinking about all her kiss scenes and
- 23:48the times where she gave me something.
- 23:51I am not sure it was entirely her choice.
- 23:58Like I remember some controversy with the heirs and her kissing
- 24:03in the closet and her having like no idea was coming or
- 24:08something like. That.
- 24:09Yeah. And then there's the kiss in
- 24:13Doctors with like no one talked about the age gap in that one,
- 24:18but that man is like he old. He is older or he was way much
- 24:23older than hair and Doctors, but that was a kiss that I was like,
- 24:29oh, SHINee, you can do more. And then Pinocchio with each and
- 24:35suck. They had this middle of the
- 24:38street kiss and I was like, whoa, OK, that's that's
- 24:42different. So you can do it.
- 24:44But it made me feel like she's choosing not to do it.
- 24:48But more importantly, I don't think bromance is for her.
- 24:54I agree, moving on, a lot of people love Nam Jihuk.
- 24:59I want Nam Jihuk and everything. I watch K dramas with him in it
- 25:02because I know it'll be fire Sabrina with 3A's at the end
- 25:07again. You're going to get sick of
- 25:08Namji hook. The the key here is like over
- 25:11consumption of this one actor. Actress.
- 25:16Yeah, I I'm not sure that having them in two to three dramas a
- 25:19year is going to fix your your thing Like, you know what I'm
- 25:23saying. Is that going to benefit them or
- 25:26you? I don't know.
- 25:28I think it's going to be a situation like Anne Hathaway
- 25:31where everybody loved her. She was a new, New Girl on the
- 25:35Block, Princess Diaries, Devil Wears Prada.
- 25:38She did a lot of great things and then she started having a
- 25:40few misses, but she was saturating the market.
- 25:44There was a lot of her everywhere, whether it was media
- 25:47for a movie or whether she was actually in a new release.
- 25:51And people started fucking hating Anne Hathaway.
- 25:53And there was nothing like for no reason at all.
- 25:56So. Yeah, so I'm just like, Anne, do
- 25:59your thing, like do the shows you want to do, and if you're
- 26:02getting the opportunities, you're getting the
- 26:04opportunities. I don't really watch her but.
- 26:08You're like, I have no skin in the game for Anne Hathaway, but
- 26:13EJ and is such an underrated actor.
- 26:14His range is awesome. Yeah, yeah, we've gone over
- 26:16that. Kimui M says Konga Noel's acting
- 26:20and face card are way better than the high profile K actors.
- 26:23OK, Queen pop off by Konga. Noel, you're shocked.
- 26:28Carol, you're shocked. Do you have thoughts on Kanga?
- 26:32No, no, OK. No, maybe you have thoughts on
- 26:35this one? Xenu X says Queen of Tears is a
- 26:37so so drama. Only get hyped because of the
- 26:39leaves. Couldn't have tears with shit.
- 26:42Let's move. On move on Mika PAC Mignon can't
- 26:45act. Wow.
- 26:47Whoa. Levi Ackerman puck mignon like
- 26:50City Hunter, puck mignon like Sun Kyun Kwan scandal puck
- 26:54mignon. I get that she's not versatile
- 26:56but can't act is wild. I agree with this person.
- 27:02Yeah, Tellery Firch, Knifehane said.
- 27:06Like healer Puck Mignon, which is better than City Hunter, by
- 27:09the way. Also, her acting in Mary, My
- 27:11Husband is excellent. Yeah.
- 27:13A lot of people came out of the woodworks to defend Pak Mium
- 27:16because I don't think that she cannot act.
- 27:20She can totally act. It's just she's got very
- 27:22comfortable playing a certain kind of character A. 100% and
- 27:26and I, I'd even put it out there like I don't think she's getting
- 27:32the shows because I watched a was it, I watched a podcast with
- 27:40I'm John Wah and then I watched Songhigyo's one of her vlogs and
- 27:46she said I haven't been no one gives me all that other stuff.
- 27:51Like they only give me this and I want to do other things.
- 27:56And I've been, I've been pigeonholed, and even I know my
- 27:59fans are sick of me playing the same role over and over again.
- 28:03So for Park Ming Young, I feel like maybe those are the only
- 28:07things she's getting. And now after marrying my
- 28:10husband, I'm hoping she gets more.
- 28:14I agree. Yeah.
- 28:15A lot of actors have come out and said that.
- 28:18Oh, my God, what was the actor that he was like?
- 28:19I don't get those kind of scripts, but I would love to do,
- 28:22like a ROM com or something like that.
- 28:23And I was like, oh, my God. From your lips to God's ears
- 28:26there, you hit a rock. You throw an actor who has gone
- 28:29on record as saying, I would love to do some sort of genre
- 28:32shifting movie, something that's out of the wheelhouse.
- 28:36Yeah. But they just don't get those
- 28:37scripts. Exactly.
- 28:39Yeah. So are we to blame because we
- 28:41keep watching the same shit over and over again?
- 28:43Should we make her flap so that she will change gears and maybe
- 28:47she'll get something else? Like I don't know what the right
- 28:50answer is, but you know, it is a vicious cycle here.
- 28:55IDKIDK says Han Zoe is not all that.
- 28:59She's not. Someone says 100% she is
- 29:02gorgeous but I get mean girl vibes.
- 29:04Plus I don't like her acting. Feels like a forest industry
- 29:06plant. Oh, some people got some nice
- 29:10vocab here with an industry plant.
- 29:14OK, calling her an industry plant.
- 29:15Hannah says. Han Zoey pissed me off so bad,
- 29:18bro, she cannot act whatsoever. Han Zoey seems to bother a lot
- 29:23of people. I go about my day never thinking
- 29:26about Han Zoey. So what do you think about Han
- 29:30Zoey from World of the Married? My name nevertheless.
- 29:36I really liked her in world of the Married.
- 29:39She was, oh, she got under my skin.
- 29:43So that tells me she did a fantastic job.
- 29:46I think that she could have easily been the next song Hey
- 29:51Gio in terms of how the industry treated her, But I don't think
- 29:59she wanted that. And like sis is going through a
- 30:03lot like her mom, her mom just got arrested yet again or
- 30:08charged again for gambling, hosting many gambling spots and
- 30:14stuff like that. She she hasn't had an easy life.
- 30:18So I ain't got nothing bad to say about her.
- 30:24I just want her to find her spot because I think people are
- 30:28playing with her right now. All right, Next up, Ji Cheng
- 30:34Wuk, Someone said. Ji Cheng Wu was the most
- 30:37versatile actor I've ever seen. Every role he gets, he nails.
- 30:41No matter what how bad the movie is, he always gets the job done.
- 30:47This versatile, OK. So I'm more interested in the
- 30:52second comment. Salma says Ji Cheng Wuk had more
- 30:56chemistry with the stepmother in the K2. 100 percent, 110%.
- 31:01Yes, he did. Yes, he did.
- 31:02And we did a deep dive on the K2 really far back in season 1 of
- 31:07Tabak. And we discussed this because,
- 31:11yeah, what? Yuna had no game whatsoever
- 31:16compared to the stepmom. Yeah, I agree.
- 31:19Like, come on, Dub Dr. says you are in is the best, the absolute
- 31:24best actor in his peer group. And I don't care about his
- 31:27scandal. Also, BL/GL should be treated
- 31:30better than last ditch efforts for Idle Slash newbies to get
- 31:34popular. I think it's been phenomenal or
- 31:41fantastic that we have come to a point where BLS and GLS are
- 31:46being consistently produced in K Drama land because again,
- 31:52generationally we never really had that.
- 31:54You are in is a really good actor.
- 32:00I also don't care about his scandal, care in the sense that
- 32:09how do I say he was sick? He was sick, Yeah.
- 32:14And I'm more empathetic to substance abuse.
- 32:20Yeah, I care if he's well or not, if he's in good health or
- 32:24not, if he's addicted or not, but I don't think we should
- 32:28penalize him as far as cancelling him and, you know,
- 32:32removing him from projects where he's already filmed, you know,
- 32:36the whole thing, that's crazy talk.
- 32:38I think that's ridiculous. So that's how I feel about UI
- 32:41and moving on. CC said not every K drama needs
- 32:45a tragic childhood back story of kidnapping or parental
- 32:49abandonment. Yeah, but that's where the
- 32:52story. Is that's I agree it's.
- 32:57Like the sauces? That's where the sauce is.
- 33:00Yeah, I agree to a point. And maybe like, we can get into
- 33:04more tropes because a lot of people had thoughts about
- 33:06tropes. So this section, I guess, is the
- 33:08trope section. Kate Baria says can we please
- 33:12erase all unnecessary misunderstandings Like y'all are
- 33:15adults talk to each other. Talk to each other.
- 33:20Karina, who I'm assuming is of Korean descent, says Oh well,
- 33:25that's a Korean mother-in-law because someone else was talking
- 33:28about their mother-in-law and their mother-in-law communicates
- 33:31and she's Korean and she says, Oh well, that's your mother.
- 33:33That's a mother-in-law. But acquaintances, colleagues
- 33:36and friends tend to rely on nunchi a lot and expect you to
- 33:39know how to act. Then don't confront you to save
- 33:43face and someone else. What the hell is Nunji?
- 33:46Basically and Karina says I'll try my best.
- 33:48Nunji translates to the ability to understand people's needs,
- 33:52such mood as we witness them and acting according to it.
- 33:55This includes body language, facial expressions and tone.
- 33:58She follows it up as saying some of it makes sense for us but
- 34:01sometimes Nunji is heavily culturally coded, IE when social
- 34:05hierarchies come into play and you're not supposed to look at
- 34:07someone a certain way. I'm sure that 100% plays into
- 34:13the lack of communication we see from characters is because XYZ
- 34:18should know. Yes.
- 34:20They should understand. Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 34:24I think Munchi is such a I'm watching this dating show called
- 34:29Heart Pairing right now and you see the character, not
- 34:33characters, they're Jesus, they're people dating and you'll
- 34:39see them like look at each other and they're just nodding.
- 34:44And I'm like, that's a whole conversation that's just
- 34:46happening. For sure, for sure.
- 34:50Yeah, I think that Karina's totally correct.
- 34:53We are watching a Korean drama or a drama from XYZ country.
- 34:58Fill in the blank country and there's stuff that gets lost in
- 35:03translation. And Ninchi is one of those
- 35:05things that perhaps the characters are expected to know
- 35:10more than they do, or assume more than they do.
- 35:15Yeah. NIA says I hate when romance K
- 35:18drama suddenly have two main leads secretly know each other
- 35:20in the past. Another childhood connection
- 35:22complaint. Like can they just speak
- 35:25strangers who fell in love without some traumatic childhood
- 35:28bond? And yes, I 100% agree with this.
- 35:31I I do subscribe to this complaint.
- 35:34Jam replies. It's more a trope to Western
- 35:37standards, but in Eastern media there's a prevalent Buddhist
- 35:40belief of inion in which it takes 1000 karmic Thais to meet
- 35:44even once in a life. To meet more than once is fate.
- 35:48The trope ends up being a lot more meaningful with this
- 35:50context, which might be why it's so popular in Eastern media.
- 35:52Yeah, Faded Mates is always going to be an interesting touch
- 35:58point that a lot of writers and K dramas seem to dip into that.
- 36:05Well, someone said Mikorasan said thank you.
- 36:09My goodness, I've said this so many times.
- 36:11So if they didn't have a traumatic childhood bond, their
- 36:13connection isn't genuine. I don't get it with that type of
- 36:16storyline every effing time. So this person agrees with the
- 36:20original commenter in that what the hell is up with this
- 36:23childhood connection shit? Or or, you know, shared trauma
- 36:27thing. Yeah, and someone was mad and
- 36:30said you can watch another trope exclamation point.
- 36:33And it's like if it were so easy because it sometimes rears its
- 36:37ugly head midway through a drama, several episodes into a
- 36:41drama. You just have no idea.
- 36:44Even in the marketing, it might not be sold to you as a faded
- 36:47mates or shared past trauma or what have you.
- 36:51That's like for you to find out. That's true.
- 36:55I don't agree with just like watch another trope.
- 36:57It's like OK if only K drama is in genre mix to begin with then
- 37:02I could pick up something else so easily.
- 37:05But yeah that's not helpful at all.
- 37:09Someone said. I feel like this is done all so
- 37:10often because whoever is writing the story can't find a valid
- 37:13reason why the two characters should like each other and can
- 37:16easily bypass that aspect of a romance.
- 37:22It could be, but I also think that when we're watching Korean
- 37:30media and you're also that includes variety shows and all
- 37:34these dating shows and whatnot, you notice that they're not very
- 37:41out there. Like they don't just go out and
- 37:44meet people. You sort of have to be
- 37:47introduced to someone through someone and it's more likely
- 37:52that you will connect. I'm not saying they don't meet
- 37:56people out of the blue, but it's more likely that you will
- 37:58connect with someone through 6° of separation or or something
- 38:04like that. So I I feel like culturally.
- 38:09You want to know where someone came from, you want to know
- 38:12their history, you want to know their family.
- 38:16And that's to me that stems from the Confucian, deep rooted
- 38:21Confucianism in the society where you can even see that play
- 38:26out with orphan stories because orphans are such an unknown.
- 38:33Yeah, yeah. You have no idea where they came
- 38:36from. Their father could be a serial
- 38:37killer. You just don't know the roots.
- 38:40If you don't know their parents, you know they're not.
- 38:43Trustworthy. That's true.
- 38:46That's true. And I'm not sure if it's only
- 38:50Confucian because even in, in Ghana, I find it's just so
- 38:57interesting. But I find myself when I meet
- 39:01Ghanaians here, one of the things we connect on is, oh,
- 39:05what school did you go to? And if they say the school,
- 39:11especially high school, because most of our 95% of our high
- 39:16schools are boarding schools. So you immediately, it's almost
- 39:20like an MBTI where you're like, oh, you went to that school.
- 39:24Oh, that means you do the and then you you're like, where did
- 39:29you go to middle school? And then you start asking about
- 39:34what church did you go to? Immediately you're able to tell
- 39:38is this person? Yeah.
- 39:41Yeah. So I think culturally that's
- 39:44just some of that. Yeah, Cat says, how is there
- 39:48always a childhood connection? And someone says, I think
- 39:50because of the glorification of first loves and absolutely that
- 39:53is also. I'm so sick of first love.
- 39:58Mariam says bring back 1216 and 20 episode K dramas.
- 40:01No, I don't want a second season. 100%. 100% screaming
- 40:07from the rooftops. I agree with Mariam Ace reject
- 40:11again. We need more mature romances
- 40:14like not everyone needs to meet there forever in school slash
- 40:17college. We need more divorcee single
- 40:19parents over 30s romances etcetera.
- 40:21Yes, 100% agree. And that's why I gave my 2007
- 40:26recommendations. Go check them out.
- 40:29Because 2007 gave us variety. That's what I'm saying.
- 40:34Yeah, I hate how drinking is used as a plot device to
- 40:37initiate a kiss and then no one remembers the kiss. 2 dramas
- 40:41this year alone have already done this.
- 40:43I don't know what they are, but yes, that is a device that they
- 40:49used to just try and break the ice, get people closer together.
- 40:53And it's comedy when one remembers the kiss and the other
- 40:56one doesn't, or they both don't remember.
- 40:58And there's a lot of hijinks that happened at this.
- 41:02There's a huge drinking culture in Korea.
- 41:04Huge. I don't think drinking is going
- 41:07away anytime soon in dramas. So I wonder how much of this is
- 41:14hyperbole, Leah, We cannot keep doing the rich man poor girl
- 41:19plots and acting like they're actually good.
- 41:26What do you? Think what do you think?
- 41:28I'm conflicted. Yeah, I think I'm over chavels,
- 41:35but not over a rich man, poor girl, or even a wealth
- 41:39disparity. Can we get more iterations on
- 41:41the trope? You know what I'm saying?
- 41:43Yes, yes, I need more rich girl, poor guy.
- 41:46I need different parts of the relationship.
- 41:51Can we get the the marriage like crafting a wedding or, you know,
- 41:55between this cup, I can get 12 episodes on just wedding
- 41:59planning between a couple that has some sort of wealth
- 42:02disparity. I'm totally down for that.
- 42:04And whatever hygiene or comedy comes out of that, or maybe they
- 42:08break up and then they get back together because it's totally, I
- 42:11see it's totally valid to plan an almighty wedding with a
- 42:14wealth disparity between a couple.
- 42:16And a lot of cracks form in that, you know, between the
- 42:21couple and they break up. You know, I, I totally see that
- 42:24happening. There's so many ways that you
- 42:26can go about doing a wealth disparity couple.
- 42:31Yeah. How do you feel about?
- 42:35Well, they almost had a wealth disparity couple, but turns out
- 42:39he had a secret dad who's super rich.
- 42:42No Gain? No.
- 42:43Love. Oh yeah, no gain, no love.
- 42:46So I liked it better when he was not a secret tribal.
- 42:51Yeah. Way better.
- 42:53I agree with you. When it was revealed I was like
- 42:55oh damn they got me with a freaking birth secret once
- 43:00again. But I don't know.
- 43:04I don't know if I want to see rich women, poor guy, just
- 43:08because of the toxic masculinity and the insecure.
- 43:13I'd love to explore that in a very mature way and it could be
- 43:18very comedic. And I think we do need more
- 43:21representation of that because just looking at the world make
- 43:26up and at least in the West, you know, women are getting more
- 43:30educated and going to college more than men and and all these
- 43:36things. So I think it can be explored in
- 43:39a very mature way. And to add to that, I have seen
- 43:45variety shows where the woman is earning more and the guy is at
- 43:50home. And let me tell you, that guy at
- 43:52home, wait for yes. No, no, no, no, no.
- 43:59Just it's they're horrible. OK, no, well here's what I so
- 44:04here's AK drama idea that I floated around on one of the hot
- 44:07takes episodes recently on the Patreon feed was why can't we
- 44:12get two different levels or states of being rich?
- 44:16You know, why can't we have an heiress marrying like a tech bro
- 44:22who just sold a startup and he just came into money Like last
- 44:26week he was eating ramen. Just a totally different way of
- 44:30life trying to get this startup we have out and and all this
- 44:35stuff. And then he sells it and comes
- 44:37into like a great mass of money. And now he's like caught the
- 44:42attention of this heiress. Maybe they meet a couple of
- 44:44times when he's poor or poorer, they fall in love and now he's
- 44:50like trying to understand how she lives and she spends money
- 44:54like water and he's still pretty frugal.
- 44:57And so like, this kind of wealth disparity is cool.
- 45:03And then your second couple can be a sister, also sister to the
- 45:07heiress who's already married, who now has a waste man husband
- 45:14because he's gotten used to the good life.
- 45:17Yes, yes. OK.
- 45:19That's a really good idea. You know what I'm saying?
- 45:21Like where's the iterate? Come on, give me something else.
- 45:25There is a drama that is not quite that.
- 45:30It is called Opio Song. And it was like, it's a really,
- 45:36I want to say 2000 and two, 2004 maybe.
- 45:40And he was a fishmonger in the market and turns out that he's
- 45:46actually an heir. So he comes into this money and,
- 45:51you know, they are training him to be a chaebol.
- 45:53And it was hilarious. And he falls in love with this
- 45:58woman from his past and she's not rich.
- 46:02And now they're trying to navigate this.
- 46:05I'm super rich now, but I just want to be with you and don't
- 46:10look at my riches. And it was a really good show.
- 46:13So I I'd recommend that too, yeah.
- 46:16Nice, I like that. I like that concept Mayura and
- 46:20says the Double Judge should have gotten the hype that
- 46:22Vincenzo got. It was actually as dark as it
- 46:25was marketed. Vincenzo ended up being more
- 46:28funny than dark and had well written female characters.
- 46:31So I have not watched the double judge.
- 46:34I think you might have. Devil judge devil oh with G song
- 46:38with. G song, yeah.
- 46:40Yes, I loved it and at the same time it was too much.
- 46:46Oh, OK. Alright, I don't.
- 46:48I don't know how to explain that.
- 46:51I don't think it was dark as it was marketed, which is true.
- 46:56Vincenzo ended up getting more funny.
- 46:59Yeah, it wasn't. Vincenzo was hilarious compared
- 47:03to Devil Judge. Devil Judge, Yeah.
- 47:07Sounds intense. Yeah, it sounds intense.
- 47:10There is a big deep dive on Vincenzo on the podcast feed if
- 47:13you want to go back and listen to it.
- 47:15I wanted the darker tone. That's my hot take, is that I
- 47:19wanted the darker tone. I did not appreciate the
- 47:22watering down of the mafia culture and the violence.
- 47:27I wanted it. That's what I was promised in
- 47:29the first couple of episodes. Yeah, I agree.
- 47:33And then they come back and it's pure slapstick K drama.
- 47:37I just had a heart take that. Oh, my God.
- 47:41But I'm gonna say it because I I spoke to Swoon Diaries about it
- 47:45this week. Speaking of Vincenzo, John.
- 47:48Yo, Ben. Yeah.
- 47:50If she's not acting depressed, she can't act.
- 47:53Oh. So she's a female leading
- 47:58Vincenzo. My follow up to that is that I
- 48:01don't think her and Song Yun Ki had any chemistry.
- 48:05They had 0. They did not have good.
- 48:08Chemistry. I thought they were better as
- 48:10platonic friends or workmates. Yeah, it felt like a someday and
- 48:15his junior. Yeah, like they were buddies,
- 48:18not romantic interests. Yeah, yeah, I I haven't watched
- 48:23enough Tonio Bin to know for sure if I agree with you about
- 48:27the depressed thing, but that is funny.
- 48:30The movie Our movie is coming out soon with non Gunman.
- 48:36That's why I said 'cause swoon Diary posted it and I was like,
- 48:41Nam Gumina's so fine. I'd love to watch this but I
- 48:45can't watch this girl depressed again.
- 48:47Like I'm so tired of watching her depressed.
- 48:50Tiring. It's tiring, but that's what she
- 48:53excels in, and I'm not sure if I'm gonna watch the drama
- 48:57because of that. Yeah.
- 49:01OK, Domino 7 seven said Most popular new Gen. romance dramas
- 49:06Everyone loves Queen of Tears, Lovely Runner.
- 49:08My Demons are so boring I never get the hype.
- 49:12Lovely runner was lovely runner reminds me of Extraordinary You.
- 49:18And I think that's the magic with the female character, like
- 49:23the female actress, she just has this love ability about her.
- 49:29OK, but the other two I agree. OK war and Talk, a lot of these
- 49:35dramas leads don't deserve love, but if there isn't a happy
- 49:38ending I'm not watching your show.
- 49:42The fucking nerve of this person.
- 49:43So a lot of these drama leads don't deserve love, but if there
- 49:49isn't a happy ending, I'm not watching your show.
- 49:53That's a trash take. That's a horrible take.
- 49:55That's foul. Yeah, foul ABCDEFGI gotta go
- 50:03says hello my 20s season 1 is that coming of age series.
- 50:09Nothing can come close to it. And I I remember replying going
- 50:12yo, because nobody talks about hello my 20s.
- 50:17I love that show, especially season 1.
- 50:20I never got around to watching season 2, but season 1, Oh my
- 50:23gosh. 100% yes loved it. Oh.
- 50:27Love it. A pancake emoji.
- 50:30I couldn't watch historical dramas.
- 50:33It's just so boring. I also skip scenes in dramas
- 50:36that show a glimpse of historical.
- 50:39Wow, wow. Oh my God.
- 50:45OK. That's I can't.
- 50:50I can't get behind that at all. No.
- 50:52Katima Harper says chemistry is not about which female lead
- 50:57slash male lead is more attractive.
- 50:59Everyone loves claiming that the female lead slash male lead has
- 51:02more chemistry. Air quotes with the person that
- 51:05is always conveniently more attractive.
- 51:08I agree it's not a hot take. I I agree with.
- 51:13Miss Harper, you're right. Yeah, like I don't think it's OK
- 51:20not to be OK. I don't really buy their
- 51:22chemistry. Oh, OK, another hot That's with
- 51:28Kim Sukhyon and Hoyeji. Soyeji yeah, and I thought the
- 51:33drama was shit, but. Oh my gosh gotta disagree with
- 51:37that but that's OK. Matt singing unironically in any
- 51:42drama makes takes the male lead from A7 to a zero.
- 51:47Especially if it's a ballad. Matt, you're on it.
- 51:50You're right on it. Man Can't Sing anymore.
- 51:55Like what's going? On Dude, I cannot stand singing
- 51:59in a drama unless it's ironic. What do you mean?
- 52:03So you didn't like hospital playlist?
- 52:06Oh, dude, Hospital Playlist is about that.
- 52:08That's part of it, right? That's in the DNA of the show,
- 52:12in the plot that they met when they were in middle school and
- 52:16they started a band. Fine.
- 52:19As as far as like singing it would be, it's someone's
- 52:23birthday. The female leads birthday and
- 52:25they're like, what do you want for your birthday?
- 52:27And she goes, I want, I don't know, Jackson to sing for me.
- 52:32And the male lead sings her a song like fuck off.
- 52:35I hate it. I hate it.
- 52:37I would never ask for somebody to sing for me.
- 52:39And maybe it stems from the utter embarrassment that I feel
- 52:45toward 1 of it. So I have a friend of mine who's
- 52:49married and her husband sings in public every so often.
- 52:54And it's not just any singing, it's opera operatic singing.
- 52:58Oh oh. Listen to me.
- 53:02I loathe it with the fire of 1000 Suns.
- 53:06I think it's the most embarrassing thing.
- 53:07They think he sounds so good. I'm like nobody requested that
- 53:13you sing. He just randomly starts singing
- 53:17yes. Like they'll be in an Italian
- 53:20restaurant on a busy Friday night and he'll just stand up.
- 53:24Oh my gosh. And I'm like, mortified.
- 53:28Mortified. No.
- 53:30No, no, no. I cannot stand that kind of
- 53:32public singing. I don't care how good you sound.
- 53:34Shut your trap, OK? It irks me to no end.
- 53:41I believe in you Matt for giving me this hot take.
- 53:44I complete completely agree. Ace reject again says it's 2025
- 53:50why are we still getting dead fish kisses?
- 53:52Also why are the couple getting together right at the end?
- 53:55Hey, I don't know, that's just a formula.
- 53:59It works. It works sometimes, it works
- 54:01better than other times, and I can't watch older dramas because
- 54:05of the guy's haircuts. You'll get over it.
- 54:09I said valid but also it's a period piece at this point.
- 54:13Yeah. Deal.
- 54:16Deal with it. And and like I, I was saying in
- 54:21my stories, maybe a week or so ago, even the fashion, I had
- 54:26people say they can't go back to old dramas because of the
- 54:30fashion. I'm like, sis, we're wearing the
- 54:32same things now. Literally.
- 54:34Like. Are you wearing a crop top right
- 54:36now? Are you wearing raggy pants?
- 54:39Do your flip flops have a platform on them?
- 54:42Are you going back to your Caprice like your Capri pants
- 54:46and huge belts? And just look at Cowboy Carter.
- 54:51Dude, I saw people wearing Ed Hardy the other day.
- 54:54Oh my, Oh my gosh, get the fuck out.
- 54:56Of here like do not come to me about the fashion in the K
- 55:00dramas. Y'all look goofy goofy. 100% So
- 55:07I'm just like you can watch it. You can watch it, get over it.
- 55:10So Bunny the plots aren't plotting anymore and it's always
- 55:13the same tropes. I said nothing is original but
- 55:17copying successful dramas hoping lightning will strike twice 3 *
- 55:2110 times is why the plots aren't plotting anymore.
- 55:25Because now I feel like if the drama is not a commercial
- 55:28success, they stop making the dramas like that drama.
- 55:34Yes. Whereas like during OCN days, as
- 55:39soon as they put out a dark drama, everybody else is gonna
- 55:43put out something very similar and all of a sudden we have all
- 55:47these thrillers at the same time.
- 55:49Yes, But I think what's happening now is unless this
- 55:55thing is a web tune before and unless you're like Kim Unser who
- 56:02wrote the Glory and things, you're you're gonna get a you're
- 56:06gonna get a manhua adaptation. So it's already tried and true
- 56:14in terms of it being a manhua success.
- 56:19Everything now feels like an adaptation from a webtoon Which.
- 56:25There were always manhua adaptations but I feel like now
- 56:29there was always there is always still the battle every K drama
- 56:34season to put out the first of something the first of a genre
- 56:39at. For instance, if it's like a
- 56:40vampire series from one network, you better fucking believe
- 56:44Netflix is also going to put out a Netflix vampire K drama and
- 56:49see who beats the other to the punch.
- 56:52You know, the year that no Shin Heisen's drama with Anne Bohian,
- 56:58who you got to give me props, I haven't mentioned yet, but that
- 57:04year everything was a past life. Yes.
- 57:09So annoying. I was so over it.
- 57:11I was like another past life. Jesus Christ, what are we doing
- 57:14here? Yeah.
- 57:15So that's why there's trends like that, because they know
- 57:20vaguely what each other is putting out.
- 57:23And those, I'm thinking those scripts are shopped around
- 57:27unless it's directly commissioned by TBN, you know,
- 57:30KBS, whatever, the writer will probably take it to different
- 57:35places and say I have this script or I'm writing this
- 57:38thing, I have this idea, whatever, I've written this,
- 57:40that and the other. What do you think?
- 57:42Will you pay me to write this? And if they say no, but another
- 57:46network picks it up, then they don't want to get caught with
- 57:50their pants down. They develop a similar concept
- 57:53and that's why you get, you know, seasons of K drama where
- 57:58it's like people are falling in love with AI, people are falling
- 58:02in love with robots, things like that all the time.
- 58:06It's cyclical. And if it's successful, even
- 58:09worse because then they'll keep doing it.
- 58:12Exactly. Yeah.
- 58:13Someone said I think Korea does action, thriller and horror K
- 58:16dramas way better than romance and comedy K dramas.
- 58:19And that's a take. That is a take.
- 58:22That's a take. K dramas?
- 58:27I think they do. Wow that is a take.
- 58:32It makes me wanna ask them what is the body of work you've seen?
- 58:37True action, thriller and horror K dramas.
- 58:41Way better than romance and comedy K dramas.
- 58:44This tells me. That's recent.
- 58:46I feel like they're a recent K drama.
- 58:47Watchers, that's that's what I was gonna say.
- 58:49I was like this, tells me. You started watching in 2020,
- 58:52year later. Or later.
- 58:55I was going to say, you definitely came after Chloe.
- 58:58Yeah. Because after Chloe, I can't say
- 59:02there's been really a Yeah, OK. Yeah, so many K dramas these
- 59:09days fail to stick the landing. All of them start off so strong
- 59:13and then their endings are just question mark, question mark.
- 59:16Not everything needs to be profound or open note.
- 59:18Like damn. Like end the story already.
- 59:24I think people, especially writers and K drama creators,
- 59:28are afraid of upsetting people. Yeah, because back in the day.
- 59:34You'd get a fucking ending. You would get a fucking ending.
- 59:37And it was very much because they were filming week to week.
- 59:42Even the scripts were changing and and definitely the audience
- 59:46had more, the oddly audience reaction had more influence on
- 59:52how the story would end, truly. But yeah, I do think they it's
- 1:00:01that middle part. That middle 10 to 14, yeah, like
- 1:00:08what is what is happening here? Why are we wasting time?
- 1:00:12Yeah. Yeah, David says.
- 1:00:15I always hate the temporary breakup in episode 14 or 15.
- 1:00:18They finally get together after whatever the main story is about
- 1:00:20and then some random thing happens and one of them needs
- 1:00:23space. When the phone rings.
- 1:00:27Oh, and moving on, Annie says stop saying K dramas are
- 1:00:31underrated just because they're old.
- 1:00:34You just weren't around when they aired.
- 1:00:36I promise some of the K dramas people are be talking about
- 1:00:39being underrated were huge. It's just been a minute.
- 1:00:43That's it. How long have you been in the
- 1:00:46game? Mel, an episode doesn't need to
- 1:00:50be one hour and 30 minutes. Are you sure you didn't write
- 1:00:56this? I didn't write it.
- 1:00:57Mel wrote it. Mel, we're on the same team.
- 1:01:00We're on the same page. There is no reason on God's
- 1:01:03green earth to make a movie length episode for anything.
- 1:01:10Yeah, no. You know what that tells me?
- 1:01:12You don't have an editor. Yeah, yeah, it could be.
- 1:01:15You don't have an editor that is working on your script with you,
- 1:01:19do you don't have an editor who's cutting down the footage
- 1:01:22and saying we don't need this. What is what is this?
- 1:01:26Are you sure we need this and questioning you?
- 1:01:30Apart from Chloe, was there another drama with?
- 1:01:34Long reply 1988. Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:37OK, OK. There's so many, as a matter of
- 1:01:41fact, but Lex says American media discovering K dramas was
- 1:01:45the worst thing to happen. The abrupt dismantling of
- 1:01:50DramaFever, Hello, Just Stealing, The Masked Singer,
- 1:01:53Remaking The Good Doctor and MLFAS for Americans.
- 1:01:59Lex, big hearts love you. Love you.
- 1:02:04I agree. And and then we come back to the
- 1:02:07conversation about Netflix and here's my issue.
- 1:02:12I think it's fantastic that you know, more people are watching.
- 1:02:16We have platforms that's accessible, but in that, and I,
- 1:02:23and I said it this way, some somewhere back in the day we had
- 1:02:27to go to Korea to watch their stories and, and to hear their
- 1:02:34voice. And now it feels like they are
- 1:02:37coming to us. And sometimes it's like the
- 1:02:42stories are I'm getting Western audience.
- 1:02:48Yeah. And I don't like that.
- 1:02:50That's not why. That's what I why I went to cave
- 1:02:53drama so. Another person says, I hate how
- 1:02:57the how the fans will hype up a drama so much and it ends up
- 1:03:00being mad boring and doesn't keep me on my toes.
- 1:03:03I hate being disappointed. Yeah man, that's that's only in
- 1:03:08recent years. I feel that it's come to a fever
- 1:03:11pitch where there is a beating frenzy around certain dramas and
- 1:03:18when you finally click play on them after likely having been
- 1:03:22spoiled on the drama, you finally click play and you're
- 1:03:25like, this is it. This is what had you guys losing
- 1:03:29sleep. But I also think because people
- 1:03:34are talking about it so much and putting up spoilers online so
- 1:03:40quickly, you they sort of shape your experience of the show
- 1:03:46before you go. In Oh yeah.
- 1:03:47Mm. Hmm.
- 1:03:49Yeah. For the worst, I'd say because
- 1:03:52the way that I used to find dramas was I would find those
- 1:03:55best of lists. I would find some Blogger who
- 1:03:58had like one sent one or two sentences on each drama and
- 1:04:02usually be like a little synopsis and what they thought
- 1:04:05of it but no spoilers. Yeah.
- 1:04:08Never spoilers. I've always liked spoilers, so
- 1:04:14I'm the type who if it's OK drama, I don't do this as much.
- 1:04:18But for for my C dramas, I'd go to YouTube, look at the kissing,
- 1:04:22be like OK, OK I I buy it and then go watch it.
- 1:04:29But for my K dramas, I think because I've been in them so
- 1:04:33long, I know what to expect. And if it's the actor, then you
- 1:04:38know, I'll stick around. But I don't.
- 1:04:42That's another topic. The spoilers online are another
- 1:04:45topic. Rampant Campbell TW Soup says
- 1:04:50I'm so over the unrealistic falls or random plot lines that
- 1:04:54to have an accidental kiss it's killing me.
- 1:04:57Especially in When the Phone rings.
- 1:05:01Yo the last time me and Carol were together we were ripping
- 1:05:04into When the phone rings. That is a whole episode review
- 1:05:08if you want to go scroll back and listen to it.
- 1:05:11But yeah, that's also a very common cliche thing that happens
- 1:05:16in the the dramas. Yeah.
- 1:05:19I take it or leave it. I mean, I don't think, I don't
- 1:05:21see it going anywhere, so. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:05:25Like Deal. Because, because I think that it
- 1:05:30takes so much, You know, back in the day we had this term called
- 1:05:35skinship, yes and, and haptic and those two things were like,
- 1:05:41it takes so much to like physically touch someone that
- 1:05:48the only way it could happen was through an accident.
- 1:05:50We both fell and we ended up on each other's lips like that's.
- 1:05:54Yeah. Or we'll never get there.
- 1:05:56Yeah, right. Or we'll never get there.
- 1:05:59And I think people are just not used to that.
- 1:06:02Yeah. Where it's overdone, which it
- 1:06:04is, but whatever, you know, skip down, purple Kami says.
- 1:06:10Also don't give a love triangle. If I know who the female lead
- 1:06:13will end up with, that's boring. Half the time the second male
- 1:06:16lead is useless to the story anyway.
- 1:06:19And you know, I agree because I like steaks, I like angst.
- 1:06:25I like a certain kind of mystery where damn, who the fuck is she
- 1:06:30going to choose? OK, so we're talking the Reply
- 1:06:34series did that really well. Yeah.
- 1:06:37But I also feel like maybe this person hasn't watched enough
- 1:06:42dramas where they fell for the second lead more than the male
- 1:06:46lead. I rarely fall for the second
- 1:06:49male lead, which is probably why I also feel this way where I'm
- 1:06:53like yeah if it's either a love, a true love triangle, or
- 1:06:59nothing. Like why even bother if you know
- 1:07:01that she has no interest whatsoever in the second male
- 1:07:04lead? True.
- 1:07:06You know what I miss? I miss, You know, the earlier
- 1:07:11dramas where it could be brothers, it could be cousins,
- 1:07:16it could be best friends. If both of them like the same
- 1:07:20girl, they're like, oh, that's our off.
- 1:07:22Like dude. Yes, yes, you're right.
- 1:07:27Like there used to be even stakes in just the relational
- 1:07:29aspect of who is in love with this person.
- 1:07:33Yes. And if it was too like they
- 1:07:35don't do this anymore, two brothers in love with the same
- 1:07:39girl or two girls in love with the same guy and their sisters
- 1:07:44or their cousins or something like that.
- 1:07:46And you're like, Oh my God, like it's tough, bro.
- 1:07:51Like they don't do that spicy shit anymore.
- 1:07:53No, no. That like halfway incestuous
- 1:07:56love triangle. Just like wrong on all counts,
- 1:08:03somehow toxic. Yeah, like Kane and Abel.
- 1:08:10Oh my God, I love Kane and Abel. That, Oh my God, nobody talks
- 1:08:15about Kane and Abel. And I feel like we've had this
- 1:08:17conversation before, but like, that is such drama.
- 1:08:21Yes, give. Me all the drama like y'all
- 1:08:26ain't dramaing right? Honestly, yes, like time between
- 1:08:31dog and wolf that I just finished.
- 1:08:33I'm just like, we don't have this anymore.
- 1:08:36We don't have, we don't have like that silent yearning we
- 1:08:40don't like. Yes.
- 1:08:43Anyway, yeah. OK, I agree.
- 1:08:45I agree. Genevieve Joy Mercado says
- 1:08:49sometimes it's hard to continue AK drama once the main couple
- 1:08:51are finally together. It's like the plot's done once
- 1:08:54that happens. What else is there?
- 1:08:57Just end the show. Just end the cut the show get
- 1:08:59it. Gen.
- 1:09:01X no says idols should not get lead roles when they want to act
- 1:09:04but start a support roles and work their way up.
- 1:09:06I mean, what's there to disagree about here?
- 1:09:11Nothing, except except if you're a dio DIO.
- 1:09:15Dio had already formed fully formed as an actor before.
- 1:09:19I think he should have been an actor before he debuted as a as
- 1:09:23AK pop star in EXO. Yes, and Imchiwan.
- 1:09:28And Imchiwan as well. Yes he again.
- 1:09:33Imchiwan was never going to be AK Pop Idol for very long.
- 1:09:40I think he hated it. He did.
- 1:09:43He was like, I don't even know why I'm here.
- 1:09:45I can't even sing that well, you know, They just kind of like
- 1:09:48made me do a lot of things and learn how to dance.
- 1:09:51And I was never 100 on it. But yeah, he seemed to thrive as
- 1:09:56soon as he left that world and started acting.
- 1:09:59So there's certain idols where I'm like, they were barely an
- 1:10:01idol. Like, come on.
- 1:10:03Dio was definitely an idol, but. Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 1:10:08Kimmy, I'm sick of them damn copico placements.
- 1:10:12You know, dude, the quality of product placements has gone so
- 1:10:17down. So down because before you
- 1:10:19couldn't even tell, right? There were some seasons of of my
- 1:10:24cage. I'm watching life where I was
- 1:10:26like, I don't remember seeing an ad.
- 1:10:28No, and I'm not even just talking about that, but I'm also
- 1:10:33talking about just the products, which really tells me the
- 1:10:37industry is down because back in the day everything felt like APP
- 1:10:44where, you know, hair dryers, Dyson was.
- 1:10:50Dyson, the Dyson. We knew Dyson before Dyson knew.
- 1:10:56Because honestly, it would be a poor, poor female, leave like
- 1:10:59holes in her shoes type poor. But she'd have a Dyson air wrap
- 1:11:03and he'd be like, wow, wow. Even my favorite was the Fridge
- 1:11:11and King to Hearts with Eason Ghee and Stop Hanchi one.
- 1:11:17Yes, Hanchi 1, Hanchi 1. That Yeah, yeah, Hanchi one,
- 1:11:21they're kissing in front of the fridge.
- 1:11:23I'm like that is the fridge I want like the peepees used to
- 1:11:28peepees. Used to be something.
- 1:11:31But now, copico, they're like. Oh, I'm a little tired right
- 1:11:36now. There's some copico it's.
- 1:11:39Too much it's. Too much.
- 1:11:42It's a joke. I feel awake now.
- 1:11:45I'm like, really? You just ruined it.
- 1:11:47It's. Ruined the whole thing.
- 1:11:49Can't even watch anymore LV. I'm new to K drama but so far I
- 1:11:53really dislike the female lead often being this timid,
- 1:11:56childlike wide eyed girl. Skittish and overly acting cute
- 1:12:00slash dramatic. Where are my strong confident
- 1:12:02grown up Queens? And I was like oh you've come to
- 1:12:05the right place. So I gave her a bunch of wrecks.
- 1:12:08I don't know if she actually watched any of these or circled
- 1:12:11back and commented back because there's too many comments on
- 1:12:16that video there. There's no way I would be able
- 1:12:18to look anyway. Try watching search www.whichwas
- 1:12:22the very first episode that I had you on moving run on my name
- 1:12:28the glory. It's OK, that's love sky castle,
- 1:12:30Mr. Sunshine. These shows don't have such a
- 1:12:32cutesy female leads. And of course the comic
- 1:12:35community hopped into her sub comments and said watch
- 1:12:40happiness watch Love to hate you.
- 1:12:44And someone said definitely recommend my liberation notes.
- 1:12:47So all those shows are really great showcases for a different
- 1:12:52strong female lead. Yeah.
- 1:12:54Do you have any to add? My lovely came some soon, Gil.
- 1:13:00Just spring. Let me think.
- 1:13:04I mean there's a lot 9 and two outs is so if you can find it, I
- 1:13:09mean that's really good friends to lovers.
- 1:13:12Anything by Kim Jesu, anything by I'm Jung Hua.
- 1:13:20Those ladies were killing it. Yeah.
- 1:13:24This person also kind of playing off of that theme from earlier
- 1:13:28about the thrillers and crime dramas.
- 1:13:31This person says the best dramas are from non ROM com genres.
- 1:13:35They have better story development when you don't have
- 1:13:38a focus on romance, Simon Tapes says.
- 1:13:42The thriller, slash, crime or action dramas have some of the
- 1:13:45best writing and performances than any other K drama genres.
- 1:13:48They're just way more engaging and the scripts require the
- 1:13:51actors to deliver. OK, I eat up revenge.
- 1:13:58Political, historical, political.
- 1:14:02I'm not sure about the thrillers.
- 1:14:05I think they've. Gotten better like I.
- 1:14:07What they're? Sensing is that the influx of
- 1:14:10money from the West and the streamers is elevating the
- 1:14:15genres that do well in the West. Yes, so action, thriller, crime,
- 1:14:24these darker ones never got play in Korea because the networks
- 1:14:28would just not really pick them up usually or there were so much
- 1:14:33censorship on these television channels where there isn't on
- 1:14:39streaming, right. They don't have to abide by you
- 1:14:42can't show this that and the other you can't show the famous
- 1:14:47one was knives and guns. So you would be watching a crime
- 1:14:51show on a regular broadcast network in Korea and then all of
- 1:14:55a sudden the gun would be blurred out or the knife will be
- 1:14:58blurred out. And you'd be like, this is so
- 1:14:59tame, Like why are they doing this?
- 1:15:01So, but it's because of broadcast rules.
- 1:15:05True, true. And my concern with the crime
- 1:15:12and thriller overtaking romance is eventually I feel that it has
- 1:15:20an influence on how we see people and strip them of empathy
- 1:15:26and humanity and and it just becomes another Pew Pew Pew
- 1:15:32bang, bang, bang. I'm just like, give me a story.
- 1:15:36Give me a give me human, a human story, which I'm really loving
- 1:15:43because I'm seeing a lot of K dramas now also doing more of
- 1:15:48that, of just the human story stuff and it's also doing well
- 1:15:54so. Yeah, I think the thriller,
- 1:15:57crime and action and stuff is good.
- 1:16:00I like that they're getting more play.
- 1:16:02I like that they're somewhat improving over time, but also
- 1:16:06they tend towards spectacle is I think what you're saying.
- 1:16:09Yeah, and I don't like spectacle.
- 1:16:12Booked by Ena, says K Dramas where actors are full adults and
- 1:16:16behave like virginal teenagers, where small things like holding
- 1:16:19hands is a huge thing, is such a turn off.
- 1:16:22And again, what? Well, why?
- 1:16:26Why don't you? You had something to say
- 1:16:28immediately. What do you have to say?
- 1:16:30No, I I'm seeing your comments and just go ahead.
- 1:16:33OK my comment that I wrote back to her on TikTok was that was
- 1:16:37the appeal for me of K dramas back when I started.
- 1:16:40Every touch became meaningful again.
- 1:16:43Exactly, that's literally why first of all, my parents would
- 1:16:49not let me like watch a bold and beautiful or like those were in
- 1:16:55the. Days of our lives.
- 1:16:57Yeah, that stuff. So it was very much Asian
- 1:17:01dramas, and it just put more meaning into every moment, like
- 1:17:09you're saying. But more so culturally, at the
- 1:17:13time, you weren't just touching anybody, no.
- 1:17:17I mean even today, like I would never just touch Someone Like
- 1:17:21You. Know what I'm saying?
- 1:17:23Yeah. So it's maybe you're a bit
- 1:17:27desensitized in the sense that you know, your environment, it
- 1:17:32was easy to like hold hands, hug and but not necessarily on the
- 1:17:37other side. Yeah.
- 1:17:39Iris says. I know literally everyone
- 1:17:41disagrees but I adore the fact that romance K dramas have like
- 1:17:44minimal kissing and almost 0 sexual scenes so she feels the
- 1:17:48opposite. I like seeing romance in actions
- 1:17:50and words rather than physically.
- 1:17:53That's what Drew means to K dramas, Yeah, so.
- 1:17:57And this is my last one that I picked.
- 1:18:00I'm so jazzed that we've come to the end of this process but I
- 1:18:04can't believe it. Annette Lenson says the white
- 1:18:07truck where someone gets hit on a crosswalk that they could
- 1:18:11avoid like 5 minutes ago always makes me so frustrated haha.
- 1:18:16And I think I might have said I was feeling cheeky that day.
- 1:18:20And when I saw her comment come in I think I said not every K
- 1:18:25drama needs a white truck but every white truck needs AK
- 1:18:28drama. I agree.
- 1:18:32And like, it's a fun, almost inside joke at this point where
- 1:18:38someone's close to the road seems about to cross it.
- 1:18:42Are they going to get hit? Might they get hit by a rogue
- 1:18:45white truck of doom? I it's like an old friend to me.
- 1:18:50Yeah, I've learned to accept it and I don't mind it at all.
- 1:18:56You know what just hit me? The white truck of Doom is
- 1:19:01almost like an intentional accidental.
- 1:19:05Sort of. That's how they are trying to
- 1:19:07explain it. But in the trunk when she walked
- 1:19:11onto the street, it wasn't a white truck.
- 1:19:14And in Goblin when I think the first time.
- 1:19:19Yeah. And then the first time the Grim
- 1:19:21Reaper stopped, like someone in the street, there was an
- 1:19:25accident. It also wasn't a white truck so
- 1:19:28it's almost like. But like, the subversion of it
- 1:19:30is also, you know, something. I like that too.
- 1:19:35I like when they subvert it and you think they're going to get
- 1:19:37hit and then they don't. And.
- 1:19:40They're like, that was a close one.
- 1:19:42I'm like, because, you know, many female lead and male lead
- 1:19:46have been maimed or killed or lost their memory from a a brush
- 1:19:52with the white truck of doom. So anyway, we have come to the
- 1:19:56end of this long process of digesting and commenting and
- 1:20:01really airing our grievances with all of these hot takes that
- 1:20:05people have presented in this one TikTok video that I posted.
- 1:20:10And I'm so happy that you were along and game to do this with
- 1:20:14me, Carol. I appreciate it so much.
- 1:20:18Carol, where can people find you online?
- 1:20:21Thank you for having me and you can find me on Instagram as K
- 1:20:27dramas musings and that's where I am right now still figuring it
- 1:20:33out. But I think I'm in the process
- 1:20:35of finding my love for, you know, K dramas again, so.
- 1:20:40Yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:20:42Yeah, you got to come back. Carol is very happy to talk with
- 1:20:46you guys about K dramas in her DMS.
- 1:20:48I think that's like the best place to to find her if you want
- 1:20:51to comment on one of her posts or something like that.
- 1:20:54Sometimes she's a little more quiet on Instagram than some
- 1:20:58weeks, but definitely a wonderful drama friend.
- 1:21:01She has Rex galore. So if you're like, oh, I really
- 1:21:04like the show, maybe Carol can suggest some more from the genre
- 1:21:09from the show. And she's so kind enough to do
- 1:21:12that for anyone who jumps in her DMS.
- 1:21:15And of course, you could talk shit with her too.
- 1:21:16That's what I usually do is I talk shit with Carol all the
- 1:21:20time. We have takes for days.
- 1:21:22But Carol, thank you so much for being here.
- 1:21:25And that's it. We're going to wrap up this hot
- 1:21:28takes this long hot takes. I'm Jessica and this has been
- 1:21:31the Tiba K Rambles podcast. Bye.
