- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. So today is a big work day on
- 0:32the farm. Lots to be done, tons to be done
- 0:35because we're getting ready to put plants in the ground,
- 0:38getting ready to keep the chickens and the deer out of
- 0:42areas so that they don't eat things, and just getting
- 0:46everything set up. So today is a huge work day.
- 0:49And obviously I'm posting this a little later than I normally
- 0:52would, but that's predicated on the fact that I have, I've been
- 0:57outside for hours already working on things, dealing with
- 1:02plants and trying to eradicate some of these deadly little
- 1:06weeds that are just awful. And they have the longest roots
- 1:10and they dig underground. But up above they have, they
- 1:14look like it's a very Pretty Little leaf, but there are
- 1:17pickers all over it. When you touch them, it actually
- 1:20burns your skin. So I was out there all morning
- 1:24long trying to get ahead of it before the sun comes up because
- 1:27today's supposed to be a very sunny, nice day.
- 1:30And I don't want to work in the sun so long because it just
- 1:32drains you after a little bit. But but we have these little
- 1:36bugs here and they're called, we all call them noseums because
- 1:40you can't see them. Obviously it's a very funny
- 1:42little thing, but everybody here calls them the noseums.
- 1:45And these noseums are just, I can't even begin to explain to
- 1:50you how damn annoying they are. They fly in your face, but you
- 1:54really can't see them. But they bite and they just get
- 1:58in your ears, around your neck, in your nose, your eyes, and
- 2:04they're so frustrating and you just want to scream every time
- 2:08you're around them because they're so frustrating for me.
- 2:11They love to go along the top of my hairline, like where my part
- 2:15is, and they just eat at the top of my scalp.
- 2:18And it drives me nuts. Now, one would think, OK, what's
- 2:22the best way to get around this? So this morning I went out and I
- 2:26have certain little things that like I've got one of those
- 2:29little, it's kind of like a cowl neck, but you put it over your
- 2:32head and it's for fishermen and it kind of like makes an extra
- 2:35neck so you can pull it up over your face.
- 2:37So I can do that and I can put it up over my ears.
- 2:40I can put a hat on. But then by the time you see me
- 2:44when I'm out there gardening, I've got goggles on, I've got a
- 2:47hat on, I've got this thing pulled up, I've got a hood on.
- 2:49And somehow they find a way in anyway.
- 2:52So I was out there working until I was being mutilated by them
- 2:58and then said, you know what, I'm going to go in, I'm going to
- 3:00stop. I'm going to shoot the podcast
- 3:02now. I'm going to because my initial
- 3:04idea for the shooting, the podcast, it was not to talk to
- 3:06you about noseeums and what they do.
- 3:08But then it got me thinking about how all these little
- 3:11things, no matter how prepared you think you are, sometimes in
- 3:15life, you just have to say, OK, I need to change my approach
- 3:19right now. So changing my approach is me
- 3:20coming in and talking to you. While they will disappear
- 3:24shortly, it's dawn and dusk really kind of typically are
- 3:30when they're their worst. This on the part of the field
- 3:32we're working, the sun has not come up all the way.
- 3:35So that's why they're out there. And it's incredibly annoying.
- 3:40So I have just moved myself inside.
- 3:43I'm changing my approach. I'm going to make a protein
- 3:45shake right now. I'm going to make myself feel
- 3:48better physically and then I'll be able to go back outside.
- 3:51And while I'm talking to you, I'm preparing to make a shake so
- 3:55I can shift my approach and then go back out.
- 3:58And where else does this show up in our life?
- 4:01Like I, I was starting to get aggravated.
- 4:03I was out there and I was like, I could feel myself getting
- 4:07aggravated because I had a plan. I had a plan and they are
- 4:11interrupting it. And then I realized, isn't this
- 4:13funny? It's just like that old Buddhist
- 4:17saying, if you don't think small things make a difference, spend
- 4:22the night alone in a room with a mosquito, because that is
- 4:26treacherous and it's so small but so annoying.
- 4:31So rather than me trying to rush and get rid of the weed, which
- 4:35is a small thing, yet incredibly annoying because it stretches
- 4:39out, it wraps itself around plants, it goes everywhere like
- 4:42bad thoughts do. It has to be eradicated, not
- 4:45just on the surface, but pulling the root out, which takes
- 4:48longer. So I have to be out there to do
- 4:51that before we lay the fabric down.
- 4:53And doing that is going to save a lot of aggravation on the
- 4:57other side. Could I go along and just chop
- 5:00it off at the top? Yes, but that would be the wrong
- 5:02thing to do and that would change the outcome of the season
- 5:06further along. So in the attempt to make
- 5:09everything better and listen, farming is a passion and you
- 5:13have to have a passion for it because there is nothing easy
- 5:16about this. Nothing.
- 5:17But it's a constant reminder that little weed has to go
- 5:21because of its stretch and it's underground and it's above
- 5:24ground and it's pickers and everything else.
- 5:27Yet I was thrown off by something that I can't even see,
- 5:31which is a smaller, smaller, tiny annoyance, yet the biggest
- 5:34thing eating away at my skin. So when this shows up in your
- 5:38life in other spots, just stop, pause, go inside, get a get your
- 5:43head clear, change your location, shake it off, and then
- 5:47go back out and attempt it again.
- 5:49And if that doesn't work, you do the same thing again and the
- 5:52same thing again because you don't give up.
- 5:54I'm not giving up on the garden because of this weed and because
- 5:56of noseeums. I'm not letting that take over.
- 5:59I just have to keep changing my approach.
- 6:02All right, my friends, I'm going to go back at it, turn on my
- 6:04blender, make a shake and go kick some garden ass.
- 6:07All right, I hope you have a blessed day and I will see you
- 6:10all tomorrow. Bye.
