Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn French with Fexingo? Luna: Always, Lucas. What are we learning today? Lucas: Last time we did ordinal numbers — premier, deuxième, troisième, and so on. Let's review them today with a little scene. Luna: Oh good, I need that. I keep mixing up deuxième and troisième. Lucas: Totally normal. Let's start. Say after me: premier. Luna: Premier. Lucas: Perfect. Premier means first. For example, le premier jour — the first day. Luna: Le premier jour. Got it. Lucas: Next: deuxième. Luna: Deuxième. Lucas: Exactly. Deuxième means second. Le deuxième mois — the second month. Luna: Le deuxième mois. Lucas: Now troisième. Luna: Troisième. Lucas: Good. Troisième means third. La troisième fois — the third time. Luna: La troisième fois. Okay, these are sticking. Lucas: Great. Quatrième. Luna: Quatrième. Lucas: Yes. Fourth. Le quatrième étage — the fourth floor. Luna: Le quatrième étage. And then cinquième. Lucas: Exactly. Cinquième means fifth. La cinquième rue — the fifth street. Luna: La cinquième rue. So I can say j'habite au cinquième étage. Lucas: Perfect. You live on the fifth floor. Let me test you. What's 'the third door'? Luna: La troisième porte. Lucas: Yes! And 'the second window'? Luna: La deuxième fenêtre. Lucas: You're nailing it. Now, let's imagine we're in an apartment building. We're on the first floor. I say: Je suis au premier étage. Where are you? Luna: Je suis au deuxième étage? Lucas: Exactly. And your friend is on the third floor. Il est au troisième étage. Let's do a quick scene. I'm the concierge. You're a visitor. I ask: Vous cherchez quel étage? Luna: Oh, I'm looking for the fourth floor. Je cherche le quatrième étage. Lucas: Très bien. Le quatrième étage est au fond du couloir. Luna: Merci. So that's 'the fourth floor is at the end of the hallway'. Lucas: Yes. Now, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with French, the way these stay ad-free is listener support. People can buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a nice way to keep the show going. And we appreciate every bit. Lucas: So back to our building. There are five floors. Le premier, le deuxième, le troisième, le quatrième, et le cinquième étage. Repeat after me: le premier étage. Luna: Le premier étage. Lucas: Le deuxième étage. Luna: Le deuxième étage. Lucas: Le troisième étage. Luna: Le troisième étage. Lucas: Le quatrième étage. Luna: Le quatrième étage. Lucas: Le cinquième étage. Luna: Le cinquième étage. Lucas: Now mix it up. What floor is the gym if it's on the second floor? Luna: La salle de sport est au deuxième étage. Lucas: And the rooftop terrace on the fifth? Luna: La terrasse est au cinquième étage. Lucas: Oui. And the parking garage is on the first floor, but below ground. Le parking est au sous-sol. But that's a different episode. Luna: Right. So we have premier through cinquième down. Can we do a quick recap of all five? Lucas: Sure. Listen and repeat. Premier. Luna: Premier. Lucas: Deuxième. Luna: Deuxième. Lucas: Troisième. Luna: Troisième. Lucas: Quatrième. Luna: Quatrième. Lucas: Cinquième. Luna: Cinquième. Lucas: Perfect. And remember, in French, ordinal numbers agree with the noun: le premier jour, but la première fois. Luna: Oh, so premier changes to première for feminine nouns? Lucas: Exactly. But deuxième, troisième, quatrième, cinquième stay the same for masculine and feminine. Luna: Good to know. So la deuxième porte, le deuxième étage. Lucas: Yes. Now, can you tell me what floor the library is on if it's on the third floor? Luna: La bibliothèque est au troisième étage. Lucas: Exactly. And the cafeteria on the first? Luna: La cafétéria est au premier étage. Lucas: You're getting it. Let's practice one more time with a sentence. I'll say a number in English, you say it in French as an ordinal. One. Luna: Premier. Lucas: Two. Luna: Deuxième. Lucas: Three. Luna: Troisième. Lucas: Four. Luna: Quatrième. Lucas: Five. Luna: Cinquième. Lucas: Excellent. That's it for today. Practice these and you'll be ready to talk about floors, positions, and rankings in French. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. Practice these till we chat again. Lucas: See you next time on Learn French with Fexingo.
