- 0:37Speaker 1: just cover the Eagles for InsideTheBirds.com, along with the Inside
- 0:40Speaker 1: the Birds pod, but he is someone who has been
- 0:43Speaker 1: closely watching this team as we've got to the initial
- 0:49Speaker 1: 53-man roster. We want to get Andrew's perspective as we've
- 0:53Speaker 1: been talking throughout the week, you know, what... Do we
- 0:56Speaker 1: know about the roster now and what it could mean
- 0:59Speaker 1: moving forward? First of all, Andrew, welcome back into the show.
- 1:03Speaker 1: How are you doing today?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Josh, I'm doing well. Thanks for having me on.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I appreciate you jumping on today because one of the
- 1:10Speaker 1: conversations we were having with Jeff Mosher yesterday I thought
- 1:12Speaker 1: was very interesting, which is kind of maybe some of
- 1:15Speaker 1: the why. behind some of these decisions with the roster.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And for me, Andrew, I want to go to tight
- 1:21Speaker 1: end first because we've had so many conversations about what
- 1:25Speaker 1: this offense could be and what we know about the
- 1:28Speaker 1: history of guys like Sean Mangan and others. And we
- 1:30Speaker 1: know Dallas Goddard led this team in touchdowns last year,
- 1:34Speaker 1: but he also has a history of injuries. So, As
- 1:38Speaker 1: you look at the tight end position, they drafted Eli Stowers, right?
- 1:41Speaker 1: They kept Jenkins on the roster. Grant Calcaterra is on
- 1:45Speaker 1: injury reserve. Johnny Munt, he's basically here for blocking from
- 1:48Speaker 1: what I've been able to surmise. So what is your
- 1:51Speaker 1: perspective on the state of the tight end room for
- 1:55Speaker 1: the Eagles as.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Of right now? Yeah, that one's probably the most confounding
- 2:00Speaker 2: to me, Josh. When you talk about Dallas Goddard, you
- 2:03Speaker 2: also have to talk about The injury history, yes, last
- 2:06Speaker 2: year he missed just one game. That was the Kansas
- 2:08Speaker 2: City Chiefs game in Week 2. But apart from that,
- 2:11Speaker 2: health has been a bit of a challenge. And so
- 2:14Speaker 2: you look about what that could mean. And he's another
- 2:17Speaker 2: year older now. So your tight end room would then be,
- 2:20Speaker 2: as you outlined, Johnny Muntz. You have E.J. Jenkins and
- 2:22Speaker 2: Eli Stowers. This whole matter is complicated by the fact
- 2:26Speaker 2: that Eli Stowers has been a little bit slow in
- 2:29Speaker 2: terms of his progression. So it's not quite clear yet.
- 2:32Speaker 2: when he will be able to contribute to the eagles
- 2:35Speaker 2: and i can imagine would be early in the season
- 2:39Speaker 2: i know that in a west coast offense you're going
- 2:41Speaker 2: to prioritize the tight end so it wasn't really a
- 2:44Speaker 2: surprise to me that they rostered four it was the
- 2:47Speaker 2: four that they chose to keep now i've noted this
- 2:50Speaker 2: in my observations that e j jenkins had impressed me
- 2:54Speaker 2: at different stages of training camp in terms of his
- 2:56Speaker 2: blocking prowess he has a receiving background. He was a
- 3:00Speaker 2: collegiate wide receiver, played for three universities, got to the
- 3:04Speaker 2: Eagles at about 240, 245 pounds at 6'6, blossomed into
- 3:09Speaker 2: 260 pounds and really took to the blocking aspect. I
- 3:13Speaker 2: remember talking to him for a couple years now about that.
- 3:15Speaker 2: He takes a lot of pride in that, spent a
- 3:17Speaker 2: lot of time working with tight ends coach Jason Michael.
- 3:19Speaker 2: He's no longer there. And Dallas Goddard and picking their brains.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And I think he was just more of a well-rounded
- 3:26Speaker 2: player relative to Cameron Latu. who I didn't think had
- 3:30Speaker 2: a particularly strong camp, but he brings so much to
- 3:34Speaker 2: the special teams group that it was a little bit
- 3:36Speaker 2: of a surprise that they leaned Jenkins in that. But
- 3:39Speaker 2: there's a big question there, and I think because you
- 3:42Speaker 2: have two blocking-centric tight ends, you have a rookie who
- 3:44Speaker 2: isn't where the Eagles need him to be at this point,
- 3:47Speaker 2: he's not ready for prime time, and then you have
- 3:49Speaker 2: Dallas Goddard. That would be a position that I would
- 3:52Speaker 2: imagine the Eagles may look to fortify at some point.
- 3:57Speaker 1: It's interesting because you mentioned Fortify. Howie does have a
- 4:00Speaker 1: history of making trades right before the season, in-season trades.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Do you think it's a trade that might be the
- 4:07Speaker 1: kind of way, or do you think this might be
- 4:09Speaker 1: a situation where the Eagles are keeping a close eye
- 4:12Speaker 1: maybe on guys who could maybe hit the waiver wire?
- 4:14Speaker 1: It might be a situation where the Eagles could take
- 4:17Speaker 1: advantage of somebody else's roster shuffling.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Well, Howie Roseman is always going to leave no stone unturned,
- 4:23Speaker 2: and I think at least if it were me, I
- 4:26Speaker 2: would let this play out a little bit in the
- 4:28Speaker 2: early part of the season, see what you have, evaluate
- 4:30Speaker 2: from there. It may not be as dire as what
- 4:33Speaker 2: it looks like on paper, so you kind of have
- 4:36Speaker 2: to let things develop. But I would imagine that you're
- 4:39Speaker 2: going to need a little bit more of a reinforcement
- 4:41Speaker 2: than someone on a practice squad or a waiver wire.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It would have to be via trade. Maybe it's a
- 4:47Speaker 2: free agent who's out there. But I think right now
- 4:50Speaker 2: what I would do is kind of just let things
- 4:53Speaker 2: develop play out and see what you have and then
- 4:55Speaker 2: kind of go from there.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Andrew, the other position that I, I feel like the
- 4:59Speaker 1: entire world is trying to get more clarity on is
- 5:03Speaker 1: what do you think the reasoning is for keeping all
- 5:06Speaker 1: four quarterbacks? Because it wasn't like Cole Payton was a
- 5:09Speaker 1: guy that there was, there was a ton of teams
- 5:12Speaker 1: around the league that were, I mean, I've, I heard
- 5:14Speaker 1: stories that there are people trying to convert them to
- 5:16Speaker 1: a tight end or other position. So why do you
- 5:19Speaker 1: think the Eagles felt the need to keep all four
- 5:21Speaker 1: quarterbacks on the initial 53?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Well, the Eagles prioritized the quarterback position, Josh, perhaps more
- 5:28Speaker 2: than any other team. Now, it was not a very
- 5:31Speaker 2: fruitful summer for Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee. I thought
- 5:34Speaker 2: for much of training camp, Andy Dalton had the slight edge.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Tanner McKee closed out a little bit stronger, but then
- 5:42Speaker 2: you have the preseason game where he fell flat. Andy
- 5:45Speaker 2: Dalton finished a little stronger in terms of preseason play,
- 5:48Speaker 2: so no one really emerged. But then you have a
- 5:50Speaker 2: young quarterback in Cole Payton, and it was widely expected
- 5:55Speaker 2: that he's going to be a developmental prospect. It's going
- 5:57Speaker 2: to take some time, especially mechanically. But when you have
- 6:00Speaker 2: a quarterback with those kind of traits and that athleticism
- 6:03Speaker 2: who can maybe offer a multifaceted skill set, you saw
- 6:06Speaker 2: him rep a little bit on special teams in the
- 6:09Speaker 2: preseason finale, that's not a player that you want to
- 6:12Speaker 2: risk parting with. And I think a lot of that,
- 6:14Speaker 2: if you're Howie Rosen, I would imagine– You look at
- 6:16Speaker 2: Kyle McCord, who they drafted last year in the sixth
- 6:19Speaker 2: round out of Syracuse, didn't get nearly the amount of
- 6:22Speaker 2: reps that Cole Payton got in training camp, goes elsewhere
- 6:26Speaker 2: to the Green Bay Packers, lights it up in training camp,
- 6:29Speaker 2: gets traded to the Miami Dolphins, and now he's their
- 6:31Speaker 2: backup quarterback. you don't want to risk losing another young player.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You want to continue to work with them and develop them.
- 6:39Speaker 2: They call themselves the quarterback factory for a reason, and
- 6:43Speaker 2: I think every season, every roster transaction can be viewed
- 6:48Speaker 2: as a learning experience, and I think maybe that Kyle
- 6:50Speaker 2: McCord situation, they're factored into it, and the Eagles really
- 6:55Speaker 2: value that position, so they view it as, We have
- 6:58Speaker 2: a veteran in Andy Dalton who's 38 years old. He
- 7:01Speaker 2: started a number of games in this league. He's entering
- 7:03Speaker 2: his 16th season. He's been in multiple offenses. He can
- 7:06Speaker 2: be a very effective sounding board and another set of
- 7:09Speaker 2: eyes on the field for Jalen Hurts. You have Tanner McKee,
- 7:12Speaker 2: who the organization still values. I can tell you that
- 7:15Speaker 2: internally there is still a lot of optimism regarding Tanner McKee.
- 7:19Speaker 2: It didn't work out for him this summer. Perhaps He
- 7:22Speaker 2: was a little bit slow to grasp this offense, and
- 7:25Speaker 2: he looked a little hesitant there, but I don't think
- 7:27Speaker 2: that their view of him has dampened any. So they
- 7:31Speaker 2: all bring something different to the table is what I'm
- 7:33Speaker 2: getting at.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Absolutely. That's kind of what Nick Foles was saying on
- 7:36Speaker 1: his season podcast about how Andy Dalton, he probably knows
- 7:39Speaker 1: more than some of the coaches do about certain systems
- 7:42Speaker 1: and defenses, and he could be a great guy for
- 7:45Speaker 1: all the quarterbacks in that room. Andrew DiCicco joining us
- 7:48Speaker 1: football at four, powered by the Inside the Birds podcast, insidethebirds.com.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Looking at the Eagles roster, the initial 53 and beyond. Andrew,
- 7:59Speaker 1: I've heard people talk about that they feel like the
- 8:01Speaker 1: depth on the Eagles O-line is better this year than
- 8:06Speaker 1: it was last year. Do you agree with that sentiment?
- 8:10Speaker 2: I do. And really what it stems from is, and
- 8:13Speaker 2: I'm going to be transparent, Howie Roseman said this at
- 8:16Speaker 2: the podium, that that was one of the areas that
- 8:19Speaker 2: he was a little concerned about going into training camp.
- 8:22Speaker 2: But then you leave training camp and you feel pretty
- 8:25Speaker 2: confident in that young group. Offensive line coach Chris Cooper
- 8:28Speaker 2: deserves a lot of credit to this point for developing
- 8:31Speaker 2: that group. And I think the biggest indication of his
- 8:36Speaker 2: sort of handprints in terms of development is, The summer
- 8:40Speaker 2: that Drew Kendall had as a second-year player, he added
- 8:43Speaker 2: weight to his frame. He's 305 pounds right now. He's
- 8:46Speaker 2: a center by trade, but I thought he did some
- 8:48Speaker 2: good things at guard, a lot stronger at the point
- 8:51Speaker 2: of attack than you have Willie Lampkin, who did not
- 8:54Speaker 2: practice for the Eagles last year. Remember, he was on
- 8:56Speaker 2: injury reserve, so this was our first look at him
- 8:59Speaker 2: in practice, and he did a nice job. He emerged
- 9:01Speaker 2: very quickly from the third team, and he, too, was
- 9:04Speaker 2: viewed as a center guard and got reps there. michael
- 9:07Speaker 2: morris a young player markel bell another young player and
- 9:11Speaker 2: and so you look at all these guys and it's
- 9:14Speaker 2: easy to become enamored with what they have uh... not
- 9:18Speaker 2: only for the here and now but also potentially for
- 9:20Speaker 2: the future so i feel really uh... really confident in
- 9:24Speaker 2: this group based off what i've seen now they have
- 9:26Speaker 2: to go out there and and perform on the field
- 9:28Speaker 2: if their numbers called but i think history will show
- 9:31Speaker 2: you and that this offensive line i mean they're they've
- 9:35Speaker 2: been there's been a lot of attrition on that line.
- 9:38Speaker 2: And so to expect, you know, the five starters to be,
- 9:41Speaker 2: to have a clean bill of health all season might
- 9:43Speaker 2: be a little bit of a, of a pipe dream,
- 9:45Speaker 2: but it should be reassuring that the Eagles have some
- 9:48Speaker 2: young talent there behind them waiting in the wings.
- 9:51Speaker 1: It is a little over to defense. What is your
- 9:54Speaker 1: perspective right now on the edge rusher situation? Because with Bernard,
- 9:59Speaker 1: you know, Alton, we're not really sure when he's coming back.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I was with Vic Fages a couple weeks ago, and
- 10:03Speaker 1: it seems to be the case still. You know, we
- 10:06Speaker 1: know Jellick's height. We know what he is. We've heard
- 10:09Speaker 1: good things about Nolan Smith coming out of camp, but
- 10:11Speaker 1: it feels like, kind of like last year, where it's
- 10:14Speaker 1: like they're thin at a position that maybe you wouldn't
- 10:17Speaker 1: expect them to be so thin at.
- 10:21Speaker 2: I don't view them as being thin there, actually. In fact,
- 10:24Speaker 2: I know Vic Fangio mentioned that off-ball linebacker, ILB as
- 10:27Speaker 2: he calls them, is probably the deepest position on defense.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I would counter that and maybe look at edge rusher
- 10:36Speaker 2: as one of those positions because if there were a
- 10:39Speaker 2: position group that could withstand if Jonathan Grenard isn't going
- 10:43Speaker 2: to be available for week one or week two, it
- 10:44Speaker 2: would be that edge rusher room because of the progression
- 10:48Speaker 2: of a Jay Lux Hunt. I thought Nolan Smith, while
- 10:50Speaker 2: he doesn't get talked about a lot, really showcased his physicality,
- 10:55Speaker 2: some juice as a pass rusher. Most importantly, he's healthy
- 10:58Speaker 2: right now. He should benefit from more snaps. Jay Lux Hunt,
- 11:02Speaker 2: I think, is primed for a breakout season. He made
- 11:04Speaker 2: a play every practice. And then you have players beyond
- 11:08Speaker 2: them that are experienced veterans in A.K. Abacatey, You have A.J. Epinesa,
- 11:13Speaker 2: who is being asked to do different things in this
- 11:16Speaker 2: system that he hasn't had to do at any other
- 11:18Speaker 2: point in Buffalo. But I think that he's progressed nicely.
- 11:22Speaker 2: And you have other players, you know, beyond that on
- 11:25Speaker 2: the practice squad, like Keyshawn James Newby. But the point
- 11:28Speaker 2: that I'm driving home here is that they are well-stocked
- 11:31Speaker 2: at this position. Each player brings something different to the table.
- 11:34Speaker 2: And when Jonathan Grenard does return... I'm not expecting him
- 11:38Speaker 2: to all of a sudden take on 55, 60 snaps.
- 11:40Speaker 2: He hasn't practiced at all with the Eagles. He hasn't
- 11:42Speaker 2: practiced at all since December. He had the shoulder injury
- 11:45Speaker 2: with the Vikings. So they may have to slow play
- 11:47Speaker 2: that a little bit and gradually build him up throughout
- 11:50Speaker 2: the year. You also have to wonder where he is
- 11:52Speaker 2: in terms of just a physical strength perspective because he
- 11:55Speaker 2: hasn't been able to lift weights with that pec strain,
- 11:57Speaker 2: I would imagine. I think all things taken into account here,
- 12:02Speaker 2: the Eagles have enough there to navigate the interim if
- 12:04Speaker 2: Grenard isn't going to be back to start the season.
- 12:08Speaker 1: What do you think the, you know, when, if there's
- 12:10Speaker 1: ever a situation where Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis are
- 12:15Speaker 1: not on the field, you know, we know about Mauro Adjomo.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Do you think they're going to try to get Adjomo
- 12:21Speaker 1: more opportunities this year because of the year he had
- 12:23Speaker 1: last year? Or do you think he is solidly going
- 12:26Speaker 1: to be in the context of a, number three D-tackle reps?
- 12:33Speaker 2: I'm smiling as you ask that question because I am
- 12:36Speaker 2: bullish and have been bullish on Mauro Jomo, one of
- 12:39Speaker 2: my favorite players, if not my favorite player to watch
- 12:42Speaker 2: on the Eagles defense. Extremely violent. He actually played the
- 12:45Speaker 2: most snaps of any Eagles defensive tackle last season. I
- 12:48Speaker 2: believe he had 740. It was 66% of the defensive snaps.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Now there's context there. Jalen Carter missed the week six
- 12:56Speaker 2: game against the Giants with a heel injury. Of course,
- 12:59Speaker 2: he missed three down the stretch with the shoulders injury. And,
- 13:03Speaker 2: you know, I think that he is going to continue
- 13:07Speaker 2: to be someone that they lean on. I don't know
- 13:10Speaker 2: that he'll take on the same amount of snaps that
- 13:11Speaker 2: he had last year, all things equal, if everyone's healthy.
- 13:14Speaker 2: But you also have other players behind Mauro Jomo as well.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Byron Young, I would say, is one of the more
- 13:21Speaker 2: underrated and important depth pieces on this team. Someone who
- 13:25Speaker 2: Vic Fangio likes, he trusts. He gives you positional versatility.
- 13:29Speaker 2: He's a backup nose tackle. And so there's a lot
- 13:32Speaker 2: of trust and confidence in him that if his number's called,
- 13:35Speaker 2: he can step in and give you quality production as well.
- 13:38Speaker 2: And then, of course, the shining star of the preseason,
- 13:41Speaker 2: one of them was Ty Robinson. I'm not going to
- 13:43Speaker 2: relitigate what McManus had to say and what that meant,
- 13:47Speaker 2: but I can tell you that watching Ty Robinson through
- 13:50Speaker 2: about the second half of training camp, after he'd gotten
- 13:53Speaker 2: a little bit of a dust-up with Tyler Steen, he'd
- 13:55Speaker 2: almost unlocked a confidence in him and it sort of
- 13:59Speaker 2: awakened him a little bit. He was playing with a
- 14:01Speaker 2: lot more ferocity. I thought that his hand usage, his
- 14:05Speaker 2: violence at the point of attack was a lot more apparent,
- 14:08Speaker 2: and that's really what you want to see. But three
- 14:11Speaker 2: weeks of production and training camp isn't probably going to
- 14:14Speaker 2: be enough to leapfrog Byron Young in the pecking order,
- 14:17Speaker 2: but it does indicate that he's playable and that he's
- 14:20Speaker 2: someone that if he needs to step in, he's going
- 14:23Speaker 2: to give you some quality reps.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Finally, Andrew, I wanted to hit on with you the
- 14:28Speaker 1: safety position because I feel like there's a lot of,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and I'm not trying to project anything on anyone, but
- 14:34Speaker 1: people who are not from the Inside the Birds podcast,
- 14:37Speaker 1: I'll put it that way, okay? People who are not ITB,
- 14:40Speaker 1: like you and Jeff and Adam, who are maybe putting
- 14:43Speaker 1: out some misinformation, shall I call it, about what is
- 14:47Speaker 1: going on, who is going to play safety, what are
- 14:50Speaker 1: the reps going to look like, what is that position
- 14:52Speaker 1: going to look like this year?
- 14:55Speaker 2: Well, Drew McCuba is going to take the top spot
- 14:57Speaker 2: there and handle that re-blanketship-esque role. Communication is going to
- 15:02Speaker 2: be paramount with him. He's a young player that started
- 15:05Speaker 2: 10 games last year, but I really like the way
- 15:07Speaker 2: that he acquitted himself this summer. He didn't necessarily come
- 15:11Speaker 2: up with any interceptions, but it's about limiting mistakes, communicating,
- 15:16Speaker 2: and being where you need to be. Being fundamentally sound
- 15:19Speaker 2: and assignment sound is critical aspects of what Vic Fangio
- 15:23Speaker 2: asks of his safeties. So I feel pretty confident in Makuba.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Marcus Epps is a steady veteran. There's a lot of
- 15:29Speaker 2: trust there. He had a really quiet summer, but that's
- 15:32Speaker 2: not always indicative of whether a player had a good
- 15:34Speaker 2: or a bad summer. But he's not a ball hawking safety,
- 15:37Speaker 2: but he is someone who's going to handle the communication,
- 15:40Speaker 2: be essentially a traffic cop back there. He's taken the
- 15:44Speaker 2: lion's share of the reps when the Eagles are in
- 15:45Speaker 2: nickel opposite Makuba. And I think that he brings you
- 15:49Speaker 2: a physical element there at safety that Michael Carter II
- 15:53Speaker 2: is a player that I was really impressed with going
- 15:55Speaker 2: into training camp. I thought that he was going to
- 15:57Speaker 2: emerge as the starter. It just gives you a lot
- 15:59Speaker 2: more optionality, the ability to be multiple on defense. And really,
- 16:03Speaker 2: when you look at the way the NFL defenses are trending,
- 16:05Speaker 2: this modern era, you're seeing more players of the build
- 16:09Speaker 2: of a Makuba or a Michael Carter. And I like
- 16:12Speaker 2: his movement ability, his eye discipline. He had three interceptions
- 16:15Speaker 2: in training camp, led the Eagles there, and found himself
- 16:19Speaker 2: around the football quite a bit. But I think Josh...
- 16:21Speaker 2: his versatility almost works against him here because he wears
- 16:25Speaker 2: three different hats, nickelback, safety, and he's the Eagles' dime,
- 16:29Speaker 2: defensive back as well. So he might be too valuable,
- 16:32Speaker 2: and if you're Vic Vanjie, you want to have him
- 16:34Speaker 2: on standby so you can deploy him wherever is needed.
- 16:38Speaker 2: So I think they have a solid three there, and
- 16:40Speaker 2: then let's not forget Cooper DeGene repping there in base
- 16:43Speaker 2: when the Eagles are in base. So I think they
- 16:45Speaker 2: have a decent amount of talent there, different types of
- 16:49Speaker 2: skill sets. And I also want to say that it
- 16:52Speaker 2: is a shame that Andre Sam injured himself in the
- 16:55Speaker 2: preseason finale. He was lighting it up. This is a guy, Josh,
- 16:59Speaker 2: who for two summers he found himself on the outside
- 17:02Speaker 2: looking in. I thought last summer was going to be
- 17:05Speaker 2: the year that he was able to latch on. But
- 17:07Speaker 2: then definitely this year, the way he was playing and
- 17:10Speaker 2: the reps that he was getting in training camp, it's
- 17:12Speaker 2: very clear that Vic Fangio, Joe Casper, they really like him.
- 17:16Speaker 2: I thought that he might have been able to elbow
- 17:17Speaker 2: his way into the roster conversation. and then he suffers
- 17:20Speaker 2: an injury and is not able to leave on his
- 17:22Speaker 2: own terms. That was a shame to see. But that's
- 17:25Speaker 2: sort of the synopsis there of what I've observed from
- 17:27Speaker 2: the safety room from 17 practices.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Of course, again, this is the initial 53. There could
- 17:32Speaker 1: be more changes. We've still got several days to go
- 17:35Speaker 1: before Eagles versus Commanders Week 1. Of course, you can
- 17:38Speaker 1: hear that game right here on 97.3 ESPN. For more

- 18:03Speaker 1: without the Eagles. You have college football, but you can
- 18:06Speaker 1: relax a little bit for that, right?
- 18:09Speaker 2: There's always work to be done, Josh. There's always work
- 18:11Speaker 2: to be done. But I appreciate you, man. Take care.
