- 2:42The Adventure of the Undecided Bride. The Adventures of Frank Race starting Paul Dubove
- 2:50with Tony Barretts Mark Dunaman. The war changed many things, the face of
- 3:02the earth and the people on it. Before the war, Frank Race worked
- 3:07as an attorney, but he traded his law books for the Cloak and Dagger
- 3:09of the Oss and when it was over, his former life was over too.
- 3:15Adventure had become his business, The Adventures of Frank Race, and now
- 3:35we joined Frank Race for the adventure of the undecided bride. Welshare it?
- 3:44It is prepared by my favorite chef at the Waldorff is a weaver of lovely
- 3:47dreams. At least it is for me. Having supt on that delicacy,
- 3:52I was sleeping peacefully watching the gyrations of an Oriental dancer conjured up to perform
- 3:57in my private dream world her dance in my We're both interrupted by a peasant
- 4:00who has little taste for the finer things in life. Hey right, oh,
- 4:05Mark, what is that racket? What are you doing up in the
- 4:09kitchen? Oh? I am I doing the man once or all after poisoning
- 4:14me with a Welsh rabbit. Well, get the runny bike, cabinet,
- 4:17a soda and his joint. I'm buying. Well, do it quietly.
- 4:19You just broke up the best floor show since Siegfield. Yeah, well that's
- 4:23fire. But at least I am going to open these wind doesn't get me
- 4:26some air. I'm on fire. It sounded like a shot, Mark,
- 4:32Yeah, it's straight Come here quick. Look, Oh, don't plays the
- 4:39street lampsy. There were three of them in the otherwise deserted street. Two
- 4:43of them were men, sliding carefully along the wall of a building, and
- 4:46their objective. Framed in white and huddled in the doorway was a woman in
- 4:48a bridle gown with an automatic in her hand and terror written in her upturned
- 4:53face. Hey, we better get down here fast, right, she's in
- 4:55trouble. No time for that. I have a gun and drawer here to
- 4:58get and set the rusher. We'll stop that right now. I will hang
- 5:04around. Now we can go down and get the girl's pointing. The gun
- 5:09is way right there. How you hit no? But I find the idea
- 5:15of an armed bride on the loose in Manhattan at two am very interesting.
- 5:19Jump into some clothes and let's go the street. When we reached it was
- 5:29deserted. But it was ASSENTI that the bride had no carbone on hand,
- 5:32and she'd hardly have accepted a lift from her pursuers. Her best bet would
- 5:36be to get off the street as soon as possible, And there were two
- 5:39logical choices, the subway or an all night cafeteria two blocks farther up.
- 5:44I sent Mark to check the cafeteria, and I went under the Marquee down
- 5:47to the subway platform. The station was empty at first glance, but then
- 5:56the mirror and a penny weighing scale caught my eye. Halfway down the platform,
- 6:00the girl on the bridle gown was hidden from me by a post.
- 6:02I could see part of the white dress reflected in the glass, and she
- 6:05saw me at the same moment that posting out, whoever you are? You
- 6:09took pot shots at me? Baby? That wasn't nice. I was shooting
- 6:11at your playmates. How do I know that? I'll show your credentials if
- 6:15you'll give me a chance. I'm not You've got a gun and a reasonably
- 6:18good eye. I can't do any damage with my hands up. Let's talk
- 6:23it over. Hi, stand there? How come you? She came from
- 6:30behind the post and in that white bridle gown. She could have made an
- 6:33organist play the wedding march in bebop, but the gun still in her hand
- 6:38made you wonder whether it was her ambition to be a bride or a widow.
- 6:41I suppose you're going to tell me you aren't working for Brent, for
- 6:44Red the general playmates who are following you. No, why did you come
- 6:46after me? Because I thought you were in trouble? H right now that
- 6:50I'm safe, and I like to be safe and the low. Sorry,
- 6:55but I feel attached to you. I think i'll stick. What's your interesting?
- 6:58I collect drives who seemed to be with rooms and spend their wedding nights
- 7:00running around the streets having gun battles. I could shoot you and leave you
- 7:03here. You could, and you might, so I think i'd better take
- 7:10that gun. That's better. It comes the train. We'll ride up town
- 7:15Aways, just in case any of your followers are still in the neighborhood.
- 7:18And on the way we can talk. All right, you win. You
- 7:21have the gun. Now I have something else for you. I have taken
- 7:25the gun from her at the drink of the platform. When I back to
- 7:27the train, she shoveled the off balance. I went down to the railers.
- 7:30As the train moved into the station, I rolled and pit myself light
- 7:32under the concrete ledges. The wheels came to a stop not three inches from
- 7:35my face. I knew better than to move, so I waited until the
- 7:45train pulled out. As it roared from the station into the dock of the
- 7:49tunnel, I stood up and looked after it rained in the rear window with
- 7:54the lovely white face of the roughest dride of the season. Hello, friend,
- 8:07Holy cow, what happened to you? I had a little experience in
- 8:11the subway. Oh why don't you paid the time fare? You're too tall?
- 8:15A snake under the toyin style our lady and white tried to dress me
- 8:18in black permanently. She pushed me under a train, all of which Mike
- 8:22and had happened if you came back to the subway when you didn't find her
- 8:24here? Yeah, so how could I figure? You couldn't handle it?
- 8:26Dame? I needed a hamboy go with some ketchup to drown out that tasted
- 8:31out Welsh rabbit. I've got to find out who that girl is, all
- 8:33right? So why didn't you ask me? How would you know? I
- 8:37read the papers a pretty kissers on page one at a Sunrise edition. Hey,
- 8:43look see that there? It is Society Coyle missus wedding and the guy
- 8:50is the joe she was supposed to marry yesterday afternoon. Oh his name is
- 8:52Brent, William Brent, and her name is Marnie Costa. So she didn't
- 8:58marry a man named Brent, and one of the men chasing her was named
- 9:01Brent. Hey eid in something else fits. He must have been a guy
- 9:07your wing, that's right. And he called the guy named Red the help
- 9:11of That must have been the best man here here child's Red Warden. It
- 9:16was North American of forty six foot. Poor paulsy No, I don't see
- 9:20Mark when I'm going to We'll have a busy day tomorrow paying calls. First,
- 9:31I checked with the police and found that the gun I had taken from
- 9:33Marne Coster was not her own. It was registered to Brent, an odd
- 9:37gift from a bridegroom, particularly for a wedding that failed to come off.
- 9:41Among other things, I learned that Brent ran a lucrative importing business with Red
- 9:45Warden as junior partner. I dropped into visit. I'd like to see mister
- 9:50Brent. I'm sorry, but both mister Brent and mister Wharton are tied up.
- 9:54Oh that's too bad. My firm will be placing a couple of million
- 9:56dollars in orders this month. I thought they might. What a piece of
- 10:00the business. I'll see if one of them is free. What's your name?
- 10:05Race, Frank Race? Yes, sorry to disturb you, mister Brent,
- 10:11but there's mister Frank Race out here, send him in and asked him
- 10:15into. He just went back to his office. Yes, sir, you
- 10:18can go in, mister Race. Apparently mister Brent has heard of your firm.
- 10:20Yes, apparently he has. William Brent sported a crew haircut that bristled
- 10:28all the way down to his eyebrows. He had about as much poet as
- 10:31in neanderthal Man, but the signat ring he wore was five beta Kappa.
- 10:35He had one arm in a sling, and the fingers of his free hand
- 10:37drubbed a tattoo on the desk. And how much Race? How much?
- 10:41Watch old Stall? You witnessed a rather embarrassing scene. Less, and I'll
- 10:45make it worth your while to forget it. And you're willing, in turn
- 10:46to forget that I put a bullet in your shoulder. Yes, how about
- 10:50ten thousand dollars? All right, I'll send it to you later this afternoon
- 10:58at your apartment. You know where I live? Yes, Red, check
- 11:03the apartment after you fight on us last night. Will the money be in
- 11:07cash? Oh? Of course, I'll send somebody for it right now,
- 11:09don't father. I was only testing prices, not selling. Come in,
- 11:13Red, you've been listening. Yeah, I've been listening. Red Warton had
- 11:20the face of a matinee idol, but the kind of hair you'd expect to
- 11:22find sticking out of a broken sofa. His body spelled athlete and his eyes
- 11:28spelled trouble. Red made you an offer, Race, take it or be
- 11:31sorry. Brent parts with ten thousand dollars very easily, just to avoid little
- 11:37embarrassment. Haven't the papers done enough already? No wedding yesterday? I look
- 11:41like a fool, and people don't do business with fools, all because of
- 11:43a lover's quarrel. A lover's quarrel with bullets. Money had a gun.
- 11:46We weren't armed. She has a violent temper. Any idea where she got
- 11:50the gun? Why how would we know? You should know, Brent?
- 11:54It's registered with the police in your name. I've got a gun that isn't
- 11:58registered with anybody. You've made enough trouble in something that doesn't concern you,
- 12:03and I'll get lost. Haven't you noticed how casually I wear my clothes with
- 12:05one hand in my coat pocket. You don't think I walked in here like
- 12:09a setup? Do you? All right? Red? Stop this nonsense?
- 12:11All right? Race? You can go to the police if you want who,
- 12:15I don't care what you do, just so long as you get out
- 12:16of here. Thank you, and excuse me if I back out. On
- 12:31the way out of Brent's office, I made a fast dinner date with the
- 12:33secretary. I figured she might give it to herself and with the help of
- 12:37candle light and wine, give me a rundown on what cooks and the importing
- 12:41business has conducted by Brent and Red Wharton. My next stop was the county
- 12:46courthouse, where I took a peek at a dead man's will just for kicks.
- 12:50It was the will of Rupert J. Costa, father of the gun
- 12:52toting bride Marny. What you want, mister right, Yes, very definitely
- 12:58cause to left his entire fortune to his daughter, to be held in trust
- 13:03until her twenty fifth birthday. But if she marries before her twenty fifth birthday,
- 13:07control of the money passes to her husband. Nice spot for a fortune
- 13:11hunter. Yeah, I guess you, old boy wanted to make sure she
- 13:15didn't marry too young, and she hasn't, not yet. I'm going to
- 13:18check the birth records. I've got an idea that Marnie cost her still a
- 13:22bit short of her twenty fifth birthday. Yeah, pop, oh oh,
- 13:28thanks, mister race so long. I left the Hall of Records and went
- 13:35down the steps into the street. I turned toward a capstan, but I
- 13:39was jostle the other way. Go on my way. At first glance,
- 13:45he looked and sounded like a kid on his way to the junior prim But
- 13:48there was a blue beard line that said he'd been shaving for a long time.
- 13:52His pork pie hat and bowed tie was something to smile at if he
- 13:54weren't familiar with a glint in his eye it came from smoking a brand you
- 13:58can't get at the corner cigar store. The schoolboy face belonged to a professional
- 14:05killer. I thought you were told to mind your own business. I'll walk
- 14:09over to that parking lot, and if I don't, I'll give it to
- 14:11your right here. I don't play games. No, your type doesn't.
- 14:16I'll walk. He was gonna handle like a crate of nitroglycering. I intended
- 14:24to make my play as we reached his car, but as we went behind
- 14:26a billboard, he played first, Now this sort of be real good fun.
- 14:41I came out of my fog, slowly through the sickly sweet smell of
- 14:45a chloroform hazen into the head, piercing sharpness of smelling salts. Come on,
- 14:50come on, come on, come on, take one more way.
- 14:54Somebody slugged me. Then I was chloroformed. But how did I get home
- 14:56here? That's something I don't know. I don't know this. You've got
- 15:01to snap out of it fast. I was lying here when I come in
- 15:03with his gun in your hand. It's been fired. Race. That cookie
- 15:09sitting in your favorite chair is very, very dead. I looked at the
- 15:13chair by the fireplace, and staring back at me with a bullet through his
- 15:18head was William Brent, the importer who never got to be a bridegroom.
- 15:30We'll return to the adventures of Frank Race in just about one minute. Now
- 15:41back to the adventures of Frank Race. Emily Post might think it objectionable to
- 15:50walk out on a guest, even an uninvited one, But since Brent occupied
- 15:54my favorite chair and was also dead, I passed up his company in favor
- 15:58of that dinner date with this secretary. A jittery Mark Donovan drove me through
- 16:02traffic to the point of rendezvous. Oh grace, if you don't call a
- 16:07corps about that stiff. They are gonna tie a can't your tail? But
- 16:11good? And if I do report it before I know who did the killing,
- 16:14I'm not going to get a chance to untie the can. I woke
- 16:17up at my own apartment with a gun in my hand and a corpse.
- 16:19I'll lead more than ad libs to explain it. Yeah. Look, how
- 16:22about that character what a porkpie had that? You told me about it?
- 16:26You ought to be trying to tag him. I want you to do that?
- 16:29Oh great, great? I chase a weed smoke or whose idea of
- 16:33romance is to strangle somebody? But you you got it tough. You have
- 16:38dinner with a dog. She's a very plain girl, really, Mark,
- 16:42who you kid? You wouldn't date a plain? Jane is South? Who
- 16:45killed cock Robin? All right? All right? How do always start finding
- 16:49a guy? I described him to you? He's probably a hood brought in
- 16:52from someplace to do this job on Brent's. If he is, he's been
- 16:56paid off by now. A lad like that might make a loud an expensive
- 17:00tour of the night spots drift between the Halo Club and the Siamese Angel.
- 17:04You'll hit one of them. Sooner or later. Okay, is your stop
- 17:08defend though, I've passed it to the florist. I'll pick up a corsage
- 17:12for the lady. Yeah, maybe I ought to get one too, huh
- 17:17for my blind date, a bouquette of poison ivy. What's your name,
- 17:32honey, it's margin. I hope you don't think I make a habit of
- 17:36dating just anybody who comes into the office. I'm certainly thought and happy that
- 17:41you made an exception in my case. I've been wondering how much of an
- 17:44impression I made on your boss, Brent. I really don't know. He
- 17:48left the office right after you didn't needn't come back. How about red Warton?
- 17:51He left too. He had a dinner date with Marnie Costs, Redheaded
- 17:55dinner date with the girl Brent was supposed to marry the one who ran out
- 17:57on him. Sure, the three of them were fighting all the time,
- 18:00but they always made up. I guess mister Wharton will calm her down and
- 18:04she'll marry mister Brent after all. But against that, huh, nothing did
- 18:11you mention having a date with me? Of course not. I think I
- 18:14want to lose my job. Look, baby, here's twenty dollars that'll pay
- 18:17for a nice dinner. I have to make a phone call, but aren't
- 18:21you coming back? I may, baby, I may. I headed for
- 18:26the phone booths near the hat check room, then changed my course and headed
- 18:30along the sidewall to the door to the kitchen. Two plainclothes men from homicide
- 18:33had come in from the street, and that meant they'd been tipped off and
- 18:37discovered Brent's body. I made my way through the kitchen, always opened for
- 18:40guest inspection, and out a little side door into an alley. I had
- 18:42more company, though, the lad with the quark pie hat. You ought
- 18:48a whole still, friend, you squirm around too much and make things tough.
- 18:52You can't pull anything on me this time. I'm your patsy for a
- 18:55murder rap. And if you drop me, you have no patsy. Besides,
- 18:57which have you drop? He might drop you? Mark good boy?
- 19:03All right, friend, you can let go of that gun shop. Look,
- 19:08I drive one block after I leave you here. See then I see
- 19:12this guy in that hat walked down the street. When he coins into the
- 19:17alley, I decided to come back. See what his pitches? Who are
- 19:19you call me Spudsy, it's all who paid you to kill Brent? That's
- 19:23what your job wasn't it, pell Mark? Take this gun? Look,
- 19:29Spudsy, I don't like this, but I haven't got much time. Who
- 19:30paid you? Or do? I beat it out of here? Come on,
- 19:33alright, let go and meet you, all right? I hit him
- 19:37and he went back into some rubbish and came up with an empty bottle.
- 19:38He broke it as I closed in on him and jabbed the jacket into my
- 19:41face. I stepped aside and call him flush on the jaw ingo. Where
- 19:48that boy ain't gonna appear on information? Please anymore tonight? No, maybe
- 19:52the police can get it out of him. You'll find a couple of boys
- 19:55from homicide out front, have them take him in on suspicion. I'm gonna
- 19:59go over this fence. Pay a call on Marney Custer. Yes, I
- 20:10want to see miss Custer. But she left on her honeymoon. Honeymoon?
- 20:15What are you giving me? I don't understand. The wedding didn't come off,
- 20:18and you know it. You work for her, and she couldn't have
- 20:21changed her mind today because Brent is dead. Mister Brent is dead, that's
- 20:25right, old girl, Now, where's the bride? She's on her honeymoon.
- 20:30She married mister Wharton in Connecticut this afternoon, and then came back to
- 20:33Peck. She married Wharton, Red Wharton, Yes, sir, and they
- 20:37left in his car not an hour ago. A spare groom is a handy
- 20:47thing to have when a girl's first choice turns up dead but suitable honeymoon accommodations
- 20:51are not made on short notice. Since Red Wharton had taken over the bride,
- 20:55there was also a chance he'd taken over the accommodations. Mark picked me
- 20:57up and we broke into the Brent Wharton Importing Company office to search for a
- 21:02clue. I don't know what you expect a fine race, just a scrap
- 21:08of paper, maybe the name of a hotel, some resort, steamship reservation
- 21:11anything. I went on, What don't secretaries take care of that kind of
- 21:15stuff? Marcus, you're right, you'll keep looking here. I'll check Margie's
- 21:19calendar notes. Okay, who's Marchie? Brent secretary? My dinner date may
- 21:23Heaven and Emily post forgive me? Come here, Mark, I've got it,
- 21:33great girl. What's your plan? The hotel Almorada and Niagara Falls.
- 21:40I had a face. Now, who would ever think a corner on a
- 21:44honeymore? Well, apparently Brent did. Now let's hope that Wharton followed suit.
- 21:48Somebody's got Watchman. Probably there's a skylight chat outside that small window.
- 21:52We can hide there until he goes through. Come on, I'll boost you
- 21:56right, all the comforts at home. It is a legend here we can
- 22:02said on, come on, come on putting up it has it's like doctor,
- 22:07the windows stained glass. You can't see us. And what's this saying?
- 22:14Once you can stacked up here? It's not funny. Watchman's gone stack
- 22:21the match? Yeah sure, but why let's see what your phone hold it
- 22:26while I opened this? Yeah right, it looks like flower It isn't flower
- 22:33mark, it's dope. There's enough here to ruin a thousand lives and make
- 22:37somebody rich. Now I know why Brent was killed. Come on, ah,
- 22:53well what do you know? At last? I get the same?
- 22:56Niagara Falls? And who am I with you? Never mind the moaning The
- 23:00clerk said they were out for a walk. Keep your eyes peeled. It's
- 23:03a guy in the dame leaning against a fence up her head and the guys
- 23:07red hair. That's them. Race. Is something wrong with that girl.
- 23:08Look, she's trying to jump. Hurry, Mark, hold her, Warden,
- 23:14heysy got him? I want head, all right, Warden, hold
- 23:15on, I'll get him, all right. Lift her back over the rail,
- 23:25all right, all right, I'll just put her down. Sorry.
- 23:29I had a hit her, Warden. It was the only way I could
- 23:30have done it myself. But you went over the rail too first. I
- 23:34just had time to grab her arm. You know what's wrong with her,
- 23:37don't you? Yeah, narcotics. She's been trying to quit. I thought
- 23:45she could stay away from him, but it almost drove her mad. Gonna
- 23:47have to turn her in. You know why she killed brands? Killed brands,
- 23:53Yes, killed brands. Oh, don't play, Warden. Somebody paid
- 23:56a character named Spudsy to kill him and play the body in my apartment.
- 24:00It adds up to you or her, which isn't. Wait a minute,
- 24:06you're not going to frame up a murder charge against her. Race. She
- 24:08had a gun to night we met, and she was using it. Brent
- 24:12was forcing her to marry him. She started taking dough. He got her
- 24:18render it. Then he started to cut down his supply and squeeze her until
- 24:22she was desperate. They good he could get him money that way and become
- 24:26the biggest operator in the country. But all of a sudden, Brent turned
- 24:29up dead and she married you. Brent knew she loved me. When I
- 24:33found out about his traffic and what he was doing to her, I was
- 24:37going to turn him in, he said. The scandal at runer, so
- 24:41I didn't. I just took it away and brought her up here. I'm
- 24:45sorry, I can see it now, but there is a dead man and
- 24:51somebody has to pay off on him. I'm not paying off her. Honey.
- 24:53How are you say back there? I'm all right now, listen,
- 25:00it's all right, baby, don't say anything. I killed Brent. You're
- 25:03just going to the hospital, all right. I'll go to the hospital.

- 26:18night, yes, and Spuggy was in jail last night too, But somebody
- 26:23came up with a fat bunch of bail this morning, didn't they. Maggie,
- 26:26what do you mean? I mean that Spuggy is your boyfriend because he
- 26:30tipped the police off about Brent's body and told them they could pick me up
- 26:33at the vandom. Then he showed up there too, and you were the
- 26:36only one when you I'd be there. I don't know what you're talking about.

- 26:59time I ain't waiting to cool. It's here and now with the same gun
- 27:03to kill Brent. You'll take me first, baby, You are right,
- 27:07Mark chilm. I am not only all right, but I will let you.
- 27:12Odds did he stays out thirty seconds longer than he did when you'll hit
- 27:17him? Good? Now, let's drop these kids off at police headquarters and

- 28:45speaking. This is a Brucel's production. Welcome back. Well. I like
- 29:25this episode as we get to see Mark Donovan make a few astonishing saves here,
- 29:33and I definitely think this series has a case for being renamed The Adventures
- 29:38of Mark Donovan saving Frank Race's life. But this really does this episode,
- 29:45perhaps more than any other kind of cast. Race as a nine errant.
- 29:51Obviously there's no insurance contract, no reason for him to get involved other than
- 29:57he sends a wrong, senses something wrong that must be righted. So perhaps
- 30:03one of the strongest episodes of perhaps of any detective, putting them solidly in
